Crysta Brown: Hi, welcome back to another episode of Horse Show Bestie. I'm your host today, Scott Cooper. It's just me today. ⁓ Krista's a little busy at the moment. Y'all, it's been it's been a while too. I feel like I've said that like every month. So I don't know. Maybe that's just life in general. But ⁓ Krista literally just got back from the world show and then she's doing a clinic. ⁓ so she's been super busy. ⁓ my work life has been Absolutely insane until June thirtieth. And so I had a little bit of catch my breath moment. Honestly, just really burnt out. So our apologies for ⁓ having a little sporadic episode ⁓ situation the last couple weeks. So hope you missed us. Actually, we're you know, we like to we like to actually stay toxic. We like bring you in and then make you like really like it and really want it, and then boom, we're just gonna like take a break. I'm just kidding. We're we're grown adults with very busy schedules. ⁓ and also like we're doing this for fun. So anyway, forgive us as we get back on schedule here. But we're really excited to do that. ⁓ yeah, so Krista's been at the world show. Hopefully ⁓ many people have been following along with their journey. ⁓ sh crushing it with the content. Honestly, I was I was missing out on that. But ⁓ looks like they had a fun show. And ⁓ honestly guys I did not realize how much FOMO I would have. I thought Ugh I thought I would be fine. So I set out World Show twenty twenty four. ⁓ had a rough world show twenty three was not not a good time. So I set out twenty four. I had no FOMO. I like, you guys enjoy the heat, enjoy that crazy schedule, like I'm good. This year, mmm Sitting out was hard. I did not like it. and I could not get a chance to to get away and just fly to Texas even for just the weekend. Actually by the time I could, it would have like been over. But so I missed it. ⁓ but you know, you don't have to feel sorry for me. That was ⁓ part of my choices and also like some things outside of my control. But ⁓ Chip and I have been holding down the fort here. ⁓ guys, I've been riding like three or four times a week. It's been great. I also don't know like sometimes what to do when I ride, but it's been it's been really nice just to like have him there ⁓ and be able to do what I want to do when I want to do it. So and the property next door ⁓ just recently invited us over so we can ride in their ring, which there's no one in there ever, and it's super great footing, and they have like a track around the pastures and turnouts and ⁓ the the riding ring. So like it's it's probably like it's probably like four hundred meters. I feel like it's the size of like a high school track. ⁓ or college track. Regulator track. Track and field. You know what I mean? The eight lane thing. yeah so we like walk around there, ride around there. I'm trying to get into like run out ⁓ since we have time. And guys we went to the beach on Sunday. It was it was awesome. ⁓ so the beach is like two miles from Chips Barn. ⁓ my sweet husband came along with me to to help like back the trailer and just be support, ⁓ which was really, really nice. But yeah, we just loaded him up, got in the trailer. He like walked down the ramp, tour the beach and like it's like he didn't even notice it or didn't realize what it was. It wasn't until we like got twenty feet from the water that he's like, Ooh, wait, that stuff's moving. That's moving. ⁓ I tried to ride him into the like into the surf, but that that like white edge foam of a wave and coming, he like, ⁓ that's not touching me. But ⁓ you know, he's he was not crazy about it. But ⁓ at the end he also got he also got in at the end, ⁓ once I got off and I was like, Let's look at we can walk. So it was very sweet, just riding on the beach and ⁓ whenever you have a horse on the beach, you're the most popular person there. So that's really fun. but yeah, it was it was like a special dream come true, finally, dream come true for chip. ⁓ And ⁓ we'll be doing that again soon. So what's next? ⁓ I think I'm doing the Ventura County Fair. ⁓ first weekend of August. So they just released their ranch riding patterns. It's like a ranch day, so I think I'm gonna do it, guys. Like I need something to do. So definitely missing showing right now. And ⁓ I don't know, I gotta just find ways to make this new adjustment in my life. But ⁓ I think we'll start with that. The one thing that's very interesting to me. And you guys can DM me if this if you guys notice this is too. So I'm in a barn with a lot of hunter jumper people. All English people mostly. You guys they clean their tack after every single ride. I I'm sure, I am sure I'm not the only Western rider that does not do that. And I was trying to think of like why. And maybe it's because like we typically have separate like show tack versus our regular or our working tack and we just kind of keep them separate and our show tack stays nice and our training tack we don't c care about. In English you tend to use it for the whole thing. Anyway, every single ride they're cleaning the bridles. So I'm not gonna lie, I feel a little judged that I don't do that, but I'm like, I'm not doing that. I'm sorry. And also I'm curious how they clean it like I'm trying not to be obnoxious, but I'm like staring, like, do they just wipe it down? Like I don't know. That's That is very interesting to me. And there's laundry going constantly. So ⁓ a very clean culture in the English community. I feel like us Western people are feral. We're just like, mm, we'll wash that when we get to it, or maybe never, or whenever. So ⁓ that's been an interesting experiment. So today, guys, we have one of my favorite amateurs coming on, ⁓ Miss Kat Gofford. Kat has been showing APHA for a long time. I remember being a ring steward and seeing her ⁓ up in the Midwest and showing ⁓ Mr. Gaunton Zippo. And ⁓ now she is a full fledged amateur, a a full adult. It's awesome, and she's crushing it. She just got back from the world show herself as well. ⁓ definitely had some great moments and saw a couple of moments that I'm sure she regrets that we'll talk about. ⁓ but we're really excited to bring Kat on today and have a little amateur hour with ⁓ Krista. How are you? I'm good. Probably not quite as tired as you are though. We're catching up. Like yeah. I the horse show hangover is one thing, but like a world show hangover is another. And it's it's brutal. And you just told me you you just got off of like three work shifts in a row. Mm-hmm. Isn't that correct? And what do you do for work? So tell the people. I'm a nurse. And I I do work night shift though, which does kind of work in my favor for all the night practices. I feel like I'm the only one fully awake. I yeah, I totally get that. So my sister is a a NICU nurse and works overnights and like her her sleep is I I don't I couldn't do it. Her sleep is crazy and wild and she can like fall asleep during the day and then like function like not on night shift the rest of the time. I don't know how y'all do it. Like good for you. That's that's amazing. what is it like when the days you have off? Like are you like try to do normal like sleep at night situation or you're like no I'm just always gonna sleep during the day? See, okay. You know, it it depends on how many days I have off. ⁓ 'cause I only work three days a week. So if I can like kinda plan it, like if I work three days really early in one week and three days later in the other week, then I'll try to flip my sleep schedule. Otherwise, I'm not gonna lie, I love to sleep. It is one of my favorite pastimes. You can ask my parents. I've always been the kind of person that could fall asleep at three PM after school and then wake up at six AM the next day. Like I just you know, the whole the whole sleep adjustment From days to nights. 'Cause they started me on days when they were training me. That whole adjustment was no issue for me. And Good for you. I I love plants and I have a lot of plants. So I like to like leave my blinds open during the day. I just sleep right through it. ⁓ my god, Catherine, I can like I feel like I used to be a good sleeper and then in the year of our lord twenty eighteen I went in SSRIs for like two years and it messed me up. And now I have to like tranquilize myself to go to sleep. Then I like once I fall asleep I'm good, but like my God, it takes me forever. And like I need a dark room, I need a fan. It cannot be warmer than sixty eight degrees. That's real, yeah. No, same. Yeah. Yeah. I wish like but in like college, I swear, like every time I sat on my couch in college, I would fall asleep. Like without a doubt. Like I knew I couldn't study there because I couldn't fall asleep. Anyway. ⁓ I was gonna ⁓ I the sleep thing made me Chuckle because in our barn group chat, which I'm still part of, ⁓ which is great. ⁓ you know, of course the world show is popping off whatever. And then randomly one night last week someone texted they're like, Hey, ⁓ horsemanship practice and John Justin at ten thirty PM. I was like, ⁓ thank you for the reminder of like the things I'm not missing at this moment. ⁓ because I would not miss that. I'm so here for that. That's ten AM for me. So you don't let's do it. You don't mind the like two and three AM John Justin practices. ⁓ I love it. Like I'm s I feel like I'm the only one fully there. My mom and I are usually there like thirty minutes to an hour early, like getting our horses ready and stuff and just being ready for that time. I'm the only one like cracking open a diet, Coke, like chit chatting. I mean, obviously no one wants to really chat with me 'cause it's two or three in the morning. People are like half asleep. Like crack and joke. Yeah, no, I'm like, it's just awesome. Like I mean and Like Shannon's like, ⁓ just like run through your pattern and I'm like I'm like ready to like get going. I'm like, let's do it. That is amazing. Mm-hmm. So for the people who don't know you, tell us tell us your journey. Tell us your life story. ⁓ my goodness. Okay. Well, so I'm from Green Bay, Wisconsin. GoPat Go. ⁓ and Sorry. So it's okay. It's okay. I'm from Michigan. Go online. ⁓ my gosh. Wait, that's that's crazy. We gotta go we gotta touch back on that. ⁓ I do kind of like support all teams though. I don't like seeing people lose. But so I I kind of have like a little bit of support for everyone. But ⁓ so yeah, I started there. ⁓ and my mom grew up showing horses and she actually so she used to love horses. So when she went to the fair with ⁓ with my grandparents as a kid, ⁓ they told my grandma that they were ⁓ to go get a hot dog. And my grandpa and my mom came back with a horse. And so that's how horses came back in the family. That's how they that's how this whole thing started. And then my mom just never stopped. And so then when I was a kid, one day I was like, Wait, I want to do this. This is so cool. My mom was like, Well, you it's a it's kind of a big thing. You can't just decide you want to quit one day. And Well, that's I mean, that's cool that it was like your idea. Your mom like, Are you sure? 'Cause like I feel like sometimes it's like the mom like, I I was a horse girl, you to be a horse girl. No, not my mom. My mom was like, Are you sure? I mean, don't get me wrong, like I did a little bit of lead line back in the day, but like to be honest, I was just in it to wave at everyone. I I was just in it for the cute outfits and to say hi. I I love that. I love that so much. but yeah, and then so that was kind of how I started with my mom's horse. ⁓ and then in I think it was around twenty twenty. I got recruited to go to TCU for their athletic department. So then I became a TCU frog on the equestrian team. I did that for four years. Am I doing this right? Yeah. Spitblood. It's the hand thing. We're doing the hand thing. Yeah. Go TCU. I see that on the TikToks. Spitblood. ⁓ so I did that for four years and then I got a job in Dallas. And so now I'm here. That's That's amazing. And you're with Shannon Waters, correct. So being in Dallas now, you get to ride way more. Yes, yes, I did. That's awesome. Was there ever a point where you were in Wisconsin and then have your horse down in Texas? Actually, yes. So back in Wisconsin, ⁓ we used to have like ⁓ at the time it was my horse Gilly, and he used to be twenty minutes from my house. So that was so that was so nice. I used to go visit him after school all the time. ⁓ but then when we moved trainers, we moved down to Texas, that became really hard because you know, I wasn't able to practice every day. But then through going to school at TCU, ⁓ I ended up only being like an hour and a half away, which is really nice. So I would try to come and practice whenever I could. It was definitely hard because you know, we had like the five AM workouts three days a week and ⁓ like you're practicing and then on top of practice you have school. So For me at least it was hard to find time to come out to the barn, but I you know, you try to make it work. Well, and in your writing. Like it's not like you're you're not in writing shape. ⁓ Thank you. So few a few points I wanna I wanna glean off that. First off, I remember you showing in Minnesota when I was ring starting. So I've known you since way back in your youth days and I just remember seeing you and Gilly in that hunter green outfit, right? Yes. Am I r okay. Mm-hmm. And I was just like, they are flawless. Like they're such a good team. And then I moved to California, started showing out here, and I can't remember which show I saw you at again first. But I was like, ⁓ it was when we were in at Copper Countries, w would have been like twenty one or twenty two, maybe. And lo and behold, you grow up, you turn that god awful nineteen age and you're up in the amateurs. And I was like, damn it Catherine is now like a good amateur, she's gonna kick my ass, and sure enough you did. I love it though. It was it's just like it's funny to me though to like we b both had these moves and like I remember you from like ten years ago in in Iowa and Minnesota, so I miss those shows. I miss those days. I know. I know. Iowa, Minnesota, Midwest peeps, we miss you, we love you. I think about you guys all the time. I generally had so much fun up there. Like that was where I grew up. I know. We could ⁓ we could just like I could remind this. I actually think I'm gonna go back to Minnesota like next week. what it's like to be in California during the summer and like not have like lake culture or cabin culture? I can't imagine. It's awful. I am like losing my mind 'cause every time I open social media, someone's out on a pontoon bow with pine trees around them and I'm like I miss the trees. I like I I miss the trees. I look around in Dallas. I mean we have trees, don't get me wrong, but like Surrounded by concrete. Like sometimes like when I say that I want to touch grass, like do you know how hard that is to find grass to touch? I look around and I mean I'm surrounded by amazing landscape, but like no grass. Right. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places. I think I might just be looking in the wrong places, but maybe ⁓ I know. ⁓ my god, I miss a forest, I miss a lake. So there's like a couple reservoirs around here that are gorgeous, but you can't swim in them. You're not allowed human bodies are not allowed to touch the water. It is the dumbest because apparently they're drinking what's first. But you can fish in them and you can boat in them. I'm like, okay, so we can put motor oil on top of the oil or on top of the water, but like we can't swim in it. It's so dumb. And then we have the ocean, but there's salt water and sharks. Yeah. It's scary. I don't want to get eaten by a shark in a lake, you know? That's why the lakes are awesome. Exactly. Like the worst you guys, like pike. So anyway. So yes. Okay. We both miss our main last. Time. One day. And the seasons. One day we'll be back. ⁓ my god, the seasons. my god, the seasons. Don't even beat we started on the pumpkin patch. Or the leaves. Catherine. ⁓ my god, fall. I like We don't have fall here. No. It's like it's like literally non existent. I know. ⁓ my god, I miss fall. Trying to drink my pumpkin spice latte like ninety degrees. Same. September and October are so hot here. It's just dry and crunchy and like just Brutal hot and I'm just like I'm so I want like fifty football on, a little hoodie, a little pumpkin spice latte, maybe iced during the day. But like forgive me if I want to wear a cute sweater. Forgive me. I want I want to wear a cute sweater. That's all I want. ⁓ Thank you. ⁓ my god, we're the same. Yes, I feel you, Scott. Like so spiritually, I feel you. Ugh, so spiritually. ⁓ tell me a little bit about riding at TCU and like college writing in general. ⁓ my gosh. Okay. So that was that was really fun. It's very different than what you would have like in the real world. So that that was quite shocking to me, you know. ⁓ 'cause it's a very like individualized sport, but then we somehow turned it into a a team thing. ⁓ so on Then like track, right? Yeah, kinda. Kind of like track. Like there were so there were forty of us, and I think we had around forty horses at TCU. And so there were five positions on roster for each event. And there was the ⁓ The horsemanship, the raining, the flat and the jumping. And then ⁓ like it we would all take turns. And there was the exhibition. And ⁓ the exhibition is where the girls got to still do the pattern and they got to ride against someone from the other team. And ⁓ if the if the matches were like if we like came out equal on both sides, then it would come down to like exhibition points. So like it was really cool. Like a tiebreaker, okay. And something that I really loved about being in a team atmosphere was how positive you could make it. Because I I love to cheer people on. I don't know if you've ever noticed that. If or if you've ever heard like a really loud whistle from across the arena, that's probably me. I love watching people show and then like giving them like a little whistle to like, you know, give them like that extra encouragement that they need just to like I don't know, like feel like so fancy out there. I mean you only get to like you only get to show a handful of times, you know? Right. You get to practice a lot, but like when you're out there like and you get someone and you get to hear someone cheering you on, it I don't know, it just feels so amazing. But but what I really loved about that team was just cheering everyone on and like all the behind the scenes work that goes into it. Because you really get to focus on those horses and like I don't know, just like take the extra time to like theraplate them and beamer them. Like we really took good care of them. ⁓ there's a lot that goes into it behind the scenes that like people don't notice. And like that was something about like the team culture that I really appreciated. And like everyone was always willing to help everyone too. So like you got to learn a lot in such a positive environment. Yeah. That's so cool. I and I like I have so many questions. I wanted to ride in college, but like I didn't grow up doing breed shows. So like I didn't you know, I was not good enough. Like I was not at that level yet. ⁓ I'm curious, like, is everyone on the team typically come from like a breed show or h like I guess in the hunter jumpers it's like higher ratings. I don't know what what their world is, but like are are people that are making the team and on the team like usually have pretty high experience, correct? ⁓ typically yes. I'm pretty sure a lot of the times they are. Or at least. Like are they mostly coming from They're mostly coming from quarter horse. Yeah. I was one of the only paint groups. Good for you. Paint representative. Yeah, love that. ⁓ and then I s I'm so dumb about this. I like I feel like I should know more. But so you ride against like South Carolina, Georgia, those types of schools that were okay. And so when you go there, you're using their horses, right? Like you guys are shipping your horses. Okay. And how is how's that? Like what does that do for you as a rider? So I I can only speak from one experience. ⁓ I got to go to Fresno with the team, which was so much fun. Mm-hmm. And I got to ride this horse. he was so amazing. Actually he was a paint horse. And we I think I got to show like against him and like his rider back when they were at Paint World. But it was so full circle and ⁓ my gosh. I just I really loved him. He was so cute. What's tricky about that is that I mean, at least for me, I'd never ridden the horse before. I mean I'd only really ever see him in the paint pen and he looked amazing. So I was like, ⁓ shoot, I'm really gonna have to, you know, hold this horse to a really high standard because he's so cool. all you really get is a sheet of paper and it'll tell you if ⁓ they have a flying lead change or not, ⁓ whether or not you can wear spurs and just like a little like blurb about the horse. ⁓ for example, in the past I've seen something about like ⁓ gets nervous around a tent. ⁓ it's basically code word for spooks at tent. I didn't know that, I was unaware. ⁓ but like it's like little things like that where like they'll give you like a little hint into it, but at the end of the day you don't really know how that horse goes. ⁓ and so you get three minutes to get on them and just kinda like figure it out in like a little warm up. And then you have to go out there three minutes. Three minutes. I'm telling you our girls are so talented. I I like I said I only done this once. ⁓ and You get three minutes to figure it out, and then you have to go out there and do the super intricate pattern. And I swear to God, they take away your stirrups like halfway through. Like just drop ⁓ Drop them and go do like an extended lope circle. And then bring ⁓ back to like a nice collected lobe. I'm like. You guys got that. And you're like You guys got that. Right. And you like don't know if this horse has like spur spab on it or anything. Yeah. That's okay. Yeah. That's wild. Yeah. What is there like Is there like a riff between like the English writers and the Western writers? Or is it like pretty gelled? I was gonna say I think it's pretty chill. I love my English girls. Like whenever they finish before us, which I th I think is like a handful of times. I think typically we finished before them, but a handful of times whenever they finish before us, they'd be coming into like our arena and cheering us on, or like vice versa. Like if I could, I'd be over in their arena helping them cheer. I I don't really think there's any like bad blood between it. I love my English girls, and I know a lot of us, like a lot of the other like Western girls do too. That's awesome. I Chip's at a barn right now that we are the only Western people. It is all hunter jumpers. ⁓ and it is super interesting, but everyone's super nice and very welcoming and also very intrigued by Chip and think he's the cutest thing on the movie. He is really cute though. He is a cutie. The one there's one girl there is like I love anything that looks like a cow. And I was just like, thanks. Like I don't I guess she hasn't seen many black and white paints before, but I thought that was hilarious. I was like, you can just like ride him one day. Like I don't care. Ugh, it's been it's been a good time. I want to talk about your world show this year. Okay. You popped off, sis. You popped off. A lot came together. Surprisingly at the last minute, but like a lot came together. Okay, so you won the showmanship. Right. Like I can't keep ⁓ all straight. Like let's look at the highs. Let's talk about the highs of the world show first. We won the showmanship and then we were reserved in the Western riding. But there's a whole backstory to that. ⁓ and then we were reserved in the Western Pleasure. That's awesome. You crushed it. Talk me w tell me about the Western riding. ⁓ god. Pisses me And I feel like you and I are gonna feel very similarly about this. Western riding for me is it's not the fact that I can't do it. I I think physically I can. It's the mentality behind it. There's something about going at a fast pace on a loose brain that doesn't really sit well with me. You know? I and I I tend to panic and I don't really have a horse that you can panic on. ⁓ when you start panicking then he's like, wait. What's going on up there? Like should hold on. Like is the arena on fire? Why are you freaking out? Right. And ⁓ I that's been something Shannon and I were really trying to work on wasn't like the mentality of it for me. I'm capable. I'm capable. I'm not confident. So Okay. ⁓ reserve. That's it. I did. I I did. and that Western Western riding. Western riding is one of those things where I'm like I hate it. I hate it so much because it makes me so mad. But I wanna be good at it. So it just like I don't know, it's like I feel like that's how I am with golf. Just like every once in a while you get that one good thing and you're like, ⁓ yeah, I can do this. You get those good changes, you're like, ⁓ I can do this and then you go to the next show and it's just like dumpster fire. And we're just like it's so hard. It's just like a mentality thing. And that Western August pattern was the first time I'd ever like gone through the line. And like Hid it softly. Well ⁓ we we've done it. It's it's happened. Well, some could scratch their heads. It was done. It was done. But this was the first time that like I I confidently rode my horse to the best of his and my ability down that line and like That that was enough for me. I just remember after finishing the lungs, that was the first part we had to do. You had to like cross to the back of the arena and everyone was out the gate and they're like, You did it. I can do long once. It's yeah for some reason it why do we need to have It's the line. Four change one, two, three change. Give me a second. I know. I know. I like actually that's my favorite pattern because you get out you get the line done first. Like that is the ideal pattern. I I hate doing the crossovers first because then he knows what's coming. It's best if we just like get to the get to the line, get it over with, and then move on with our lives. Also, I hate the one where you have to like circle the end cone because it's always so tight, especially in the John Justin. So anyway, you had a you had a beautiful go. I loved watching it. Thank you. I wanna come back to the mentality thing in a little bit, but I wanna talk about one of my favorite of your highlights of world show. And I'm sorry if you don't find it funny, but the versatility. My son knew. My son knew I loved plants, okay? And he said, Mom, look, we can take it home. We can take it home. He said, I don't know if anyone's watching, and let's do it. Ugh It was I I'm like I felt so horrible for you, but like I just cackled. I'm sorry, there's nothing funnier when the horses grab the p w I know I saw when I saw your hand go up over your mouth, I was like, Okay, she thinks this is funny too. Ugh There was a couple years ago Spencer's horse, Cruz, in the senior trail Karen was riding him. You know those logs in the trail that were like covered with artificial turf? Cruz grabbed the whole pole with this mouth and like tossed it. It was the funniest thing I've ever seen. And honestly, I saw other horse videos from the world show this year of people of field horses grabbing the grass. So he was not the only one. Yeah. Calvin, he just had to make sure it wasn't real. That's all. Right. And I swear he had his dinner before this. I swear. I watched him finish it. ⁓ my god. Rattled him up, braddled him up, took him down, and he still went for it. It's I I feel Chip's almost done that a couple times. Actually on the bridge, I think it was last year. And he was like so close to having flowers. I was like, You better not. You better not. We are just starting. Do not Did you notice after my pattern? I think if that was like one of the first ones to go, more people just like started going further away from the Wide Well that's probably smart. ⁓ man. Okay, so I want to go back to this mindset thing and overcoming anxiety. Do you consider yourself like an anxious person or just anxious in the show ring? ⁓ absolutely. Absolutely. Like I am generally very anxious in life. in the ring, it can manifest itself in different ways. But like I literally have rides, especially like at a at a big level, like world show rides, where like my hand, like my horsemanship hand, is just shaking, shaking the whole time. And then I like get out of the pen and I'm like, okay, I'm gonna shake for like twenty minutes. Like, how do you how do you approach that? Like how do you deal with your anxiety? You have a ton of experience. You've shown y Breachho since you were a kid. You sh rode at TCU. You're awesome amateur now. Like Where does that come from and like how do you deal with it? ⁓ you know, there was this there was this sports psychologist named Matt Johnson at TCU who used to work with our team who did like absolute wonders. Honestly he he put a lot of tools in my toolbox. ⁓ one of the things I do before I show that'll help. ⁓ have you have you ever heard of the Superman pose where like you put your hands on your hips? And then you like yeah, you stand with your legs at like ⁓ shoulder width apart, maybe even a little farther. Yeah, you still like stand like superman. If you do that for like five minutes and like listen to like a really positive song or like do that in front of a fan, I'm telling you, you will walk out, being so strong and confident. And that is something like ⁓ it's I'm pretty sure it's scientifically proven. Cut it out of cut out. It's not but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna try this. It really helps. ⁓ people tell you to do that before interviews. I do that before my showmanship classes. ⁓ another thing, box breathing really helps. What's box breathing? It's okay, so it's the rule of fours, like a box is four sides. So you breathe in before. And for four. Fold for four. Fold for four. Release for four. ⁓ Like nothing for four. Okay, okay, okay. ⁓ my gosh. That does wonders like for after when you're really anxious. And you know what too, Scott? Something that I really found that really helps with me and my patients. If you're ever super nervous, like just take three fingers and then if you just kinda like rub on your chest like this, like in a like a little circle, works wonders. ⁓ above the shirt or under the shirt? Above. I don't I mean sorry, under. Sorry. Yeah. Like the Okay, skin to skin. Okay. Yeah, it's like a skin to skin thing. If you just kind of like jump rub in circles, or if you just like tap ever so slightly I'm already caught. It works. Yeah, it works wonders. I ⁓ I do that with my people sometimes if like they're ever feeling really anxious. And ⁓ that was something I've I've taught a few people in our barn, and I see them doing it too now. Liza Krista has told me to box breathe, and I'm sure she got it from you. I'm like, ⁓ no, like like let me give you a hug. I don't know. I I do that sometimes. Like if I'm like just sitting there and I'm like, why why am I anxious? My chest, like everything's okay. I d I like to do that a lot. ⁓ and then for me too, for some reason what helps my anxiety is like always having a backup plan. I don't know why. I will I always have a backup plan. Yeah. That's a great point. And like I I think Krista and I have talked about this is like have a plan like I'm thinking about just like a horsemanship situation. Like have a plan about like if something goes wrong, what's gonna happen, but also like know your horse's strength and weaknesses too and like here's what you're gonna show off and go big on and like here's what you can kinda try to just mask. So I yeah, the having a plan is like a necessary and B for sure will help your anxiety because you don't have to be like, ⁓ my God, if it goes if it doesn't go perfect, then nothing's gonna happen. Do you do you feel like your anxiety comes from like Pressure on yourself or expectations or is it just like the moment? You know, I think it kinda comes I think it comes from both. Like ⁓ the pressure on yourself because it's it's like, you know, you've you've been practicing so much and you know what you're capable of and you know what your horse is capable of and it it's like you you just you're you have elements of your practice that just went so well and you really want to execute that to like show those judges how Cool you and your horse can be. But you know, sometimes it does like that's just not the way the cookie crumbles. And I think for me, realizing that what happens out in the show pen is something you can't control is also a really comforting thought. But having a horse like Calvin that's so green, you know. ⁓ We're we're gonna have baubles along the way. But you know, another thing that ⁓ Matt, the sports psychologist, had taught us was something called beat that you can't control, you know, which is your body language or your breathing. ⁓ that's for the B. The E is for effort, so how much effort you put into something. If you can confidently say that you have prepared all you can do, like there's nothing more that can come after that. And then your attitude about it as well. You know, if you come into it with an open mind knowing that you've done all you could do to prepare and that you're gonna go out there and you do your best. Once again, like there's not really much more that can be asked from of you. And then you as well as, you know, the thinking. If you're gonna go out there with a positive mentality and think about the outcome as of, you know, what did I do well? What are some things I can maybe improve of and like what did I learn? It really changes the way you ride. And that's it's hard to like implement that, but once you do It really takes a lot of weight off your shoulders. Yeah. I love that. Like there's just yeah, there's so many things you can't control. You can't control My horse ate a plant. Or strip to eat a plant. Like you know, if someone's filling a trash bag during the middle of your run, like you just like seen that happen at the world show before too. Yeah, it's just like there's some things there's outside of control. I like your I like your thought about the preparation thing and I can think of I think it was World Show twenty-one, where like it was my last year of novice. I went into the world show thinking like I'm a bad bitch and like I've practiced every second I can in all of this and I was like it was just it was just fun. I was like, now I'm just excited to go show off what we've been practicing. Like I was really, really confident going into that. And felt really good about it. And I can think of other moments where I'm just like, ⁓ I'm winging it. And it's like very obvious right now. Like I haven't ridden much in the last couple months or like whatever it is. And like I prefer that mindset of like, I know I'm prepared. But you know, life gets in the way too. And like sometimes you can't always control those things. But like I think it's just a good reminder for everyone to like just like control the things you can control. So I love that. I like is there anything you do at like Cone A? Like when you're walking in? I know we talked about a few of these things, but like is there anything like once you're like through that gate that you do or say to yourself? usually when I'm going up to Cone A, I'm usually trying to think of something funny that makes me laugh. ⁓ funny. Because if I think the problem is is if I think too much about myself and it's usually just about myself. It's like gosh like on my heels down ⁓ if I think too much about myself my whole ride will just go w from bad to worse. Because I my like seat will get tight and then my poor horse is like, Why are we freaking out? Like what is going on? Is there a bear in here? Right. Right. Exactly. So when I get to that cone, I just I try to think of something funny that makes me laugh. And usually my people are like shouting something funny to make me laugh as well. and I just try to remember what side of the cone I'm supposed to start on 'cause sometimes that's the hardest part. It really is. I know. You always always side of the code you're supposed to start on. Right. And there's always tracks on both sides. It's you know what? I know. How is I know. I hate that. I when I walk in I'm like, ⁓ shit, I should have looked for that detail. I don't remember. And then you're just like you do the pattern you're like, I hope that was the right side. Yeah, because there's always tracks on both sides. So it's like, you know what? It's in it's in the it's a divine intervention at this point. I don't know. Right. ⁓ so yeah, I usually think of that and then I'm like trying to look for the judges because I often also forget where the judges sit. So like there have been times the judges will be waiting for me, like waving the flag. I just have no idea. I'm looking around and then people will be like screaming at me, Go I'm like, Okay. I'm just you know, trying to stay in my lane, remember what I was supposed to do. Laugh. That's amazing. So tell me about Calvin. Mm-hmm. We love Calvin. He is gorgeous. How long have you had him? Like what's the future look like? How do you feel about it? ⁓ Calvin, so we got him really young. I wanna say when he was around three or four. ⁓ and we've had him for a couple of years now. ⁓ he came to us just knowing the Western Pleasure 'cause that that was kind of what he was proud to do. That was all he'd kind of done at the time. So we ⁓ kinda had to put on all of his other classes. We're we're which was a bit challenging. ⁓ but nevertheless, like it it's so awesome to be able to be with your horse, you know, from day one with those pattern things. Don't get me wrong. I mean he always knew how to do the pleasure. The the the trainers before did a great job with that. But you know, to add on like the horsemanship and now Shannon's working on trail and to do the western riding ⁓ and to do the Hunt Seat and the Ek. I I loved that. That was one of my favorite classes to do with him was the Equitation. ⁓ and then the showmanship as well. That was something I spent a lot of time on that I'm really proud of. ⁓ it's just It's a really rewarding feeling, you know, and I also love that APHA added those five and underclasses. I feel like those patterns are very fair for like the horses that are new to it and don't you know have all the experience of like the really brokshaw horses to do all those really hard things. But they still make it challenging. This year they had a side pass. Which I thought was kind of challenging, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Especially in like a horsemanship situation. Mm hmm. And I always clarify everyone nailed it. Everyone nailed it. Of course. Yeah. Course. So you have Calvin now, who's very green. Previously you had Mr. Gilly Gallonzippo who's now in the APHA Hall of Fame, which is very cute. ⁓ love that I I remember Gilly back in the Midwest, like you guys crushed it. Love that horse. He he was a he's a king, is absolute king, legend. Up like he's in the Hall of Fame that that speaks for itself. How did he help you develop as a rider. Like I I always not always, but like sometimes I hear the argument of just like, ⁓ they're a pushbutton horse. Like you can put anyone on them and like I know that's not true. Like I've ridden some of other horses in Karen's barn that are world champions and I screw them up the entire time I'm riding them because like the buttons aren't there or not the right thing. Like how did Gilly help you progress as a as a horseman? Well Gilly Gilly was always ⁓ I always struggle to find the words to say whenever I talk I just love him so much. But Gilly was always such a willing participant. And he was a competitor that not only wanted to show, but also, you know, wanted to show with you. ⁓ I feel like that was something that made us so successful was you know, not only that partnership that we had, but like also our bond. ⁓ Gilly, I don't I don't know how he did, but he always knew I always said I always said that horse always saw me for who I was without ever having to say a word, which is crazy to say. ⁓ I just I never felt like I ever had to prove anything to him and I don't I hope he never felt the same about me. ⁓ 'cause he he absolutely never had to. ⁓ and Gilly just with his experience was really able to kind of show me the ropes around the show pen. And I'm able to kind of take that experience, you know, to show Calvin the ropes too. Which is which is really awesome. ⁓ and like kind of rewarding to see as well. But yeah, I just I really miss that horse so much. I he's ⁓ he was still he was still tricky, don't get me wrong. Yeah. You know, the the broken moments. ⁓ the turnaround and walk in like any pleasure or hunting underclass. The turn around and walk. He was just like, nope, we gotta go. Yeah, he's like, I know what's next. Why not give extra credit? Of course. Right, exactly. He's like, I've done this a billion times. I know what I'm I'm like, Gilly, like, you're so right. But like, can we just walk for like a minute? And he's No, like you're you're settled, you're balanced, you got this girl. Like, like, okay. Gilly, calm down. But I mean Did he did he like y I you mentioned earlier like Sometimes like if you're getting uptight and anxious, like Calvin can feel that too. Like was it the same with Gilly? Was or was he able to just like be constant no matter what? ⁓ it definitely was, but Gilly was able to like I don't know, Gilly was able to always calm my nerves in the sense where it was he was just kind of always there for me. Like if I ever got really nervous, that horse, ⁓ my god, I'm gonna like start crying. He just He like knew. He just always knew and he was like, It's okay, cat. Like I'm here, like just like we practice. I'm right here. And you know I'm sure Calvin will do that someday. And he's getting to that point too. He's he has a very good heart and like a very innocent soul, but he's just he doesn't have as much experience as Gilly does. Right. but that was just something I needed so much at that time in my life. And that horse, ⁓ I'll just never be able to thank him enough, you know? Yeah. Ugh. I feel the same way like about I know, I I totally relate 'cause I feel the same way about Chip and like he's not perfect and he has plenty of his quirks. But like we work with each other and like I always know what I'm getting. ⁓ and I know sometimes what I'm getting it might include a trick or two that I didn't ask for and It's just part of the game that we play and whatever. ⁓ but like those horses that can teach us and help us like reach our dreams. It sounds so cliche and dumb, but I don't care. I'm gonna say it anyway. Like those horses are so priceless that can like really help us get to a point and develop us as riders. Like I am one hundred percent the rider today because of Chip and Karen. But like those horses are just I don't know, there's something super special about them. I love a gelding. I'm just gonna say I love a gelling. I love a big dumb gelling that takes care of me. I just love it. Me too. ⁓ my gosh. Gelly. I just remember watching you guys and just thinking like that is the most like perfect pair and like just unstoppable. Just absolutely unstoppable. And like and I know you'll get there with Calvin. Like you're you guys are already crushing it. Thank you. Thank you. ⁓ what's been what's been the biggest adjustment from going from a horse like Gilly to Kelvin? you know what? It's this is gonna sound I d I don't know. I for me the biggest adjustment 'cause at school like we rode a lot of green horses. It was never about that. It was like the mentality of not having your best friend and like feeling like you have to For a long time I felt like I was betraying him because I was moving on without him. But like I knew that Gilly wanted me to keep going 'cause like he taught me all this. Yeah. and he put so much like that horse put so much of his time and effort into me, and he absolutely didn't have to, 'cause he was so broke. But he really did, and he really taught me how to ride. And I owe so much to him. I think I thank him before every single ride. Well, no, I have to thank him after the rides because he pulls things. I'm so serious, he pulls things. I am so serious. And you know what? You know the one class I thanked him right before I went into the one at Calvin ate the plant. I gave and I gave him some grapes after Vegas. I you know, I was like, Okay, here we go. Nope. Shouldn't have done it. That one was on me. That horse is always still pulling things, but my gosh, yeah. The hardest part was, you know, moving on. Well, I don't know. And I don't really feel like I ever totally have moved on. I don't know if I ever will because I don't You don't have to I don't think I'm ever gonna and I even I even mean this with people too. I don't think I'll ever meet anyone who will ever come close to the bond I had with Gilly. And I think that's okay. ⁓ you know, it's funny we talk about this. My friends and I were messing around in college at one point and we went to go like see a psychic, like just for fun. And they made everyone leave the room, like just so I guess like something about like different energies. I'm I'm not exactly sure how that works, but So they made everyone leave the room. So it's just me and the psychic. And right away she had told me that there was this person with a broken leg who said that I needed to move on and that they're okay and that they can walk again. Right away. ⁓ she said that this person was really worried about me because they and this was years after it happened, Scott. Years. Mm-hmm. ⁓ my God. Years. ⁓ my God. And I was like, ⁓ my God. And she was like, God no, like he'll be coming he'll be coming back again in like another life, so don't worry about him. But he he's worried about you and he wants you to move on. ⁓ my god. ⁓ my god, it's trying bollic ⁓ my god, I would t and I left. I would too, I would totally lose it. I was like, I can't talk about it. Right. ⁓ my god, that's like heart wrenching. And like I'm I try to take that and move on. 'Cause like I don't know. Like when I think about my happiest moments, it was truly with Gilly. Mm-hmm. And like I I'm you know, it's it sounds so cliche, you now you're just left with the memories. And it's it's it's hard to keep going sometimes. So it's never really about like you know, like in inconsistency of green horses or like trying to like learn a new green horse. For me, it's always been like the mentality of like not having not like your partner. And then I've had him as my partner for so long, it's like when I Like I was saying to you, like when I got really nervous, Killy was always like, I'm here, like I got you know, Calvin's like Why are we nervous? Hold on, what's going on? What are you seeing that I'm not? You know? Right. He doesn't know, he doesn't know. ⁓ and so I'm slowly working through those nerves with like the tools we talked about earlier, but ⁓ my gosh, do I miss do I miss that horse? Yeah. No, I'm so sorry. It's I remember hearing that news too, I was just like shocked and sad. Like knowing that's like one of our industry's greatest and I know he's super close to you and I don't know, I just feel for you. I like I dread that day, honestly. And I so like it's funny, me and my boss have this conversation a lot and about dogs, but I think this applies here too. Like there's always like that one dog that like is yours, it's your soulmate. And and even if it passes, then you get another one. Like that the other one is not gonna replace it. Like that's how I feel about my current dog, and I'm gonna be broke into a billion pieces when she passes. Hopefully not for like another ten years. But like people have gotten second animals and they're like, Well, I love it, but like it's still not the same as the first one. So I think it's like it's super common and it's super okay to feel that. Like I'm just glad to see you still in the show pen. 'Cause I think a lot of people And they lose like a r yeah, when they lose their show partner, they're just like, Well, I'm done. Like I don't want to do this again. Mm-hmm. Yeah, that was definitely really hard for me too. And ⁓ Calvin's been really sweet and like naive and patient. He's he's such a kind horse. So it's like having to re learn to like open your heart again is really hard. Chris Krista and I talk a lot about the trust issues. She's like, You gotta trust him. And it's so hard for me to but I mean 'cause I I know he's there, but it it's like it's just like a giant mental block. It's like the last thing I ever trusted was Gilly. He's no longer here. But it's okay. We're working through it. We're working through it. It's it's going. Did you did you like want a break or like after Gilly passed, were you like ready to take a break from the show pen a little bit? Did you think about it? Like what brings what makes you come back and like get Kelvin? ⁓ you know, I was I was thinking about it it was such a hard time. I kind of blocked a lot of that point in time out of my memory 'cause it was so hard. But honestly I think what kept me going was like was my love for showing and I just I knew deep to how Gilly didn't didn't teach me all this for nothing. You know, and ⁓ even if Calvin didn't work out then like, you know, he could just be a sail horse and just you know saw him after a couple of years but Kelvin was such a cool opportunity and I I really liked his personality and I could really see myself like at the time like really learning to love this horse and I just I felt like he was kind of like w another one of those like once in a lifetime opportunities 'cause he's so intelligent, Scott. I mean we've already taught the horse to smile, bow, he'll shake your like he he fist bumps you with his nose. Like he he's so he's so intelligent. ⁓ I just kinda knew we had something special and I I knew I also I didn't wanna I I didn't wanna end on like end my career in such a low note. Yeah. No. I totally get that. So I'm glad you're here. ⁓ thank you. I'm glad you're here too, Scott. It's the beach looked so fun. I was so jealous. ⁓ my god, it was it was super fun. But I gotta admit, like I really I'm really missing showing. Like I had such FOMO. I know. I ha I feel like I've done this whole grandstand all year about like Chip's gonna retire and we're just gonna trail ride and beach and like he's done showing. I don't want to be done showing. I'm gonna be honest. I am like is Chip done showing because Gilly was never done showing. So I'm str this is what I struggle with. Of like, you know, we talked to an animal communicator a few years ago. People have heard this story a thousand times, but he told me like he doesn't love showing. But he does it because he knows I love it and it's time we spend together. So I'm just like, okay, I know he doesn't love it, but it is fun. I know he hates Vegas. Like, I think he I I think he's not the only horse that hates Vegas, so whatever. But also it's also the closest facility, so suck it up. ⁓ so I don't know. I I don't w I feel stupid being like a little too granola and crunchy. Me like we should talk to the animal communicator and ask him again if he wants to show. I know. I maybe I will just for a for the psychicals. Maybe the animal communicator. Do it. Right. I I don't know. 'Cause I I literally Krista got this meltdown over the phone a few weeks after I moved him. 'Cause I moved him and then I'm like, what am I doing? He's fifteen. He could be like showing for another ten years at this point. He's not old. He's in his prime. He's doing well. Wha what am I what am I doing? And like my other like thought was that I'll bring him home and just like have him as a home horse and then I'll go buy another one at the end of this year and take it to Karen's and like that'll be my show horse. Hey, that doesn't fix my like I hate to drive the two hour drive to the barn and back and takes up my entire day on a Saturday when I already feel like I don't have a lot of downtime. And B, I'm looking at like my board payments and like looking at what training board I like, ⁓ I don't actually know if I can afford two. Like it's a lot. Like ⁓ my god, like I think I can buy one, but like at the monthly board training and then like ⁓ yeah, you better have money to go on shows on top of it. So I have had these meltdowns. So like what am I doing? Although like I really love having him close and riding three or four times a week. Like it that's been really nice. So I don't know, maybe I need to like readjust a little bit and I wanna keep him home, but maybe we still haul the shows and like you know, Karen can help me with that or whatever it is. Like I I don't think he's the type of horse that needs to be in full time training still. So we'll see. But I'm I'm defin like I'm for sure not done in the Chopin, but like I maybe Chip's not either. And now I'm like, I would love to actually take him to the Western Versatility at the World Show after I like vow, but I would not I know, no kidding. ⁓ after I vowed I wouldn't take him to Texas again. But I don't know. ⁓ I know. Do you have any open shows near you? That was something we used to love to do. Like the little open show. Not a lot of pleasure shows I'm noticing. I'm I'm looking for more though. there is so we're gonna go to the Ventura County Fair on August 1st. They they have like a ranch show. ⁓ so totally gonna haul in for that, which I'm very excited about. I know, go back to my roots of county fairs. ⁓ and it's just a haul-in situation, which is actually better. I don't think I'd like want to leave him on the showgrounds, although that's always fun, like decorating your stalls and going to the county fairs and all that. I know. Isn't that fun? Like I miss that stuff. I miss the themes. I know. ⁓ so we're gonna do that and then I wanna do Golden Grand, which is an open show, but the dates don't work out. I'm like out of town for it. ⁓ I don't know. I I don't think we're done. But I just don't know what it looks like yet. So But I still I do want that like really fancy all around her. Like Chip is one hundred percent my heart horse and I realize his limitations above all things too. So we'll see. I don't I I really don't know what the next year looks like and we're we'll all find out together. Last little wrap up thing. Let's go to this or that. what is your favorite event to show? ⁓ the equitation. Equitation Why? I ⁓ my god, I love the egg. Okay, okay. Do you know how I said I don't like to go fast on a long rein? ⁓ you want fast with two hands. Okay. Yeah, it's awesome. Fair. ⁓ least favorite class? ⁓ probably the Western writing. It really came together for that class. But mentally, it's still a big challenge for me. I'm excited to see where it goes in the future. See if I've like fully overcome it. But it's it's a little scary going kind of fast. It is. Yeah, well and it's also funny too, 'cause you always feel like you're going a million miles an hour and then you watch the video and you're like, ⁓ that actually It's really humbling. It's so humbling. It was like when Chip and I did the the boxing last year and we like had to chase that the cow down the fence at one point and I was like running and then I saw the video I was like, ⁓ my god, he like barely extended loping. What is wrong with me? That's pleasure people need to touch grass. favorite facility to show at Okay, I've never shown there before, but it would probably be O'Cala. Does that count if I haven't shown there before? Because it's so pretty. ⁓ It's so pretty. We'll l we'll let it count. Like it looks insanely pretty. Like up north though, for vibes, Gordyville. I miss it. Okay. That place I do love Gordyville. Up there. I I loved Gordyville. You know what else I think is ⁓ probably my my underdogs is the Iowa State Fair. Yes. The showgrounds Like I love Des Moines. Like I always used to get really excited when we were showing in Des Moines instead of Cedar Rapids because that facility's gorgeous. I you know what I also miss is Winona. ⁓ I love Winona. I miss such a good place. Mm-hmm. I do love that like Winona and Cannon Falls and ⁓ god, kind of Kirkwood. They like all look the same. They must have had all the exact same architect for all of ⁓ 'Cause they're like barely different between. ⁓ I had a Another question. Pick your favorite color of horse. ⁓ definitely a gray. Definitely a gray. A gray? I love greys. ⁓ this is so bad. I usually have like a gray count. At every single show I go to, like, ⁓ my god, like there's three grays here. And I like I wait like I watch them show. I am so supportive of the gray horse community. I feel like people don't know this. It's just me. Like I feel like I'm like the number one. But you've had beige. It's just myself. Okay. So you love Mr. LB at the bar. ⁓ yeah. A hundred percent. He looks like a unicorn. Wait, what's his name? Troy. What's his name? Yeah, Troy, Troy. You're He LB at the bar. The first time I saw that horse, ⁓ it was ⁓ I was literally at like a little cafe with my sister and we were watching the APHA World Show live feed and we were like we saw him I think she was doing like the trail or something like that with this horse and I like, ⁓ my god, Emma, it's happening. It's happening, it's a gray it's a gray And like look at how fancy it is that she was going around with it. And it was like I think that day was the first gray I had seen. And I was like, It's happening. ⁓ my god. I love a good gray. I do too. I think they're underrated. ⁓ Platinum Cowgirl is like one of my favorites. I love a gray. They're so beautiful. I do love a gray. Although I almost bought a gray. ⁓ I love the depth. See? See? Okay. I am a gray fan. I'm I know people will hate this, but I'm not a sorrel fan. Although I have always said if the only swirl that would change my mind is your mom for Finn. Mr. Finn, Finn is like the most stunning animal on this planet. I am obsessed with him. Thank you. Do you get to ride him, by the way? I do. Yeah, he's he's really cool. I I love that one. He's so cool. He's so fancy. He he loves his job too. He just he he's such a good boy, honestly. And then I also love this is one of like the only socially acceptable shows where you can cheer for people while they're mid pattern. Yes. I wish that was that can be my hot take. I wish we could cheer for people more mid pattern. That was something I loved about the team. It was like we were hooting and hollering for each other and I get that some horses don't like it. So they mean like I like I get that. But like a whistle here and there It could go a long way. You know what? We can start that. I'm I'm on board with that.
