Field Notes From The Unknown: I'm And I'm Mackenzie. And this is Field Notes from the Unknown, ⁓ a podcast your favorite local cryptid. Mackenzie Hrubey: ⁓ Hello. ⁓ know song I stuck in my head today? ⁓ Casey: Hello. I'm sure you're about to tell me. Mackenzie Hrubey: Pregnant Sonic I think I'm gonna put a ring on it. So my brother is really loves the VTubers. Casey: Where did that w Where did that even come from? Mackenzie Hrubey: And there's a V tuber that was ⁓ commissioned to sing a song about pregnant Sonic, but it is the most earworm therm thing I have ever heard in my entire life. And so I have to suffer through it, and now all of you have to all of us also have to suffer through it. So Casey: Well, I don't know the whole thing and I'm not gonna go look up the VTuber of Pregnant Sonic, but I swear if it starts popping up in my reels because it just came out of my mouth and our electronics are listening to us, I will come and haunt you in your dreams. Mackenzie Hrubey: That's fair. I'm not the stepdad. I'm the dad that stepped up. Casey: I'm glad you're the dad that stepped up. However, today we are not gonna be talking about stepdads and dads stepping up. Mackenzie Hrubey: What are we talking about today, Casey? Casey: We are going to be talking about the Ozark Howler. Yeah. Mackenzie Hrubey: is that a Sasquatch? Really? What? Casey: No. Yeah, it is not. Surprisingly it is not a Sasquatch. Mackenzie Hrubey: What else howls out there in the Ozarks? Casey: Well, I'm gonna tell ya. So today we are heading deep into the Ozark Mountains. Mackenzie Hrubey: ⁓ I'm excited. Casey: And I'm gonna set the scene for you, okay? Mackenzie Hrubey: I'm ready. Casey: The sun is setting through the thick ⁓ trees. You can't shake this feeling that something has been watching you all day throughout your hike. Every time you turn around, there's nothing there. Not even a squirrel. Then it happens. A guttural, unearthy cry echoes through the mountains. It doesn't sound like anything you've ever heard before. And that's when you realize you're in the presence of the Ozarkowler. Mackenzie Hrubey: Here we Casey: So the depictions of the Ozark howler vary wildly. Some witnesses claim that it's a massive black bear, while others describe a panther with horns, a wolf with glowing red eyes, or an enormous black cat with oversized teeth and claws. Right? Mackenzie Hrubey: Wow. C i is it possible it's a sh shapeshifter or do you think one of them is right and the others aren't? Casey: I think one of them is right. I but I don't it's almost like all these animals combined, but leaning more towards the black cat. Mackenzie Hrubey: Gotcha. Casey: The creature seems, like I just said, to be a combination of them all. A stocky bear sized beast covered with shaggy black fur, with glowing red eyes that reflect in the moonlight, and horns protruding up top its head. It's eerie call is one that most recogni the most recognizable feature of this beast. Witnesses describe it as a chilling mix of an elk bugle, a wolf's howl, and even the laugh or scream of a hyena. So someone out there did like a mashup of all three of those, and it's actually kind of terrifying. Like it's it's really freaking weird. Mackenzie Hrubey: Wow. What's master flying? Could you imagine like being out in the woods hunting or something and you hear something like that? I Yeah. Casey: And you hear something like that, like no. It's terrifying. And not even like you see something with horns that looks like a cat, but also looks like a bear and a wolf with glowing eyes. No thank you. No thank you. That yeah, be like that is something straight from hell. While Mackenzie Hrubey: I think it was a demon. Like I would just straight up like think it was a demon. Yeah. This is horrible. Casey: Physical evidence is almost non-existent. That terrifying cry is the most commonly reported encounter. So it's not the sightings, it's the sounds. Mackenzie Hrubey: Has anybody recorded the sound on with an audio capture? Casey: So we're gonna touch on sightings here. The earliest documented reports date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Although some local legends claim that the frontiers ⁓ the f that frontiersman Daniel Boone encountered the creature while exploring Missouri, these the stories had never been ver verified. They are simply Mackenzie Hrubey: All right, okay, great. Didn't fucking Daniel Blue do. Casey: I don't know. Isn't he the apple guy? Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah. Right? Casey: What he did, I don't know, he's a frontier man exploring shit. I Mackenzie Hrubey: Didn't he have a fucking massive cow too? Like blue or something? Like a massive cow. Right? I don't know. Yeah, there's also a legend from Kentucky that he slain a Sasquatch and that put the body in some kind of cave. Casey: Was that him? That might have been him. Was he a real person? and what fucking I don't know, rolled a rock in front of it, kinda like God or whoever. Yeah, I don't know. I'm d don't know my biblicals. I just know there was a boulder and someone in the cave. Anyway So supposedly Daniel Boone saw the creature while he was in Missouri, but nothing's been verified. Mackenzie Hrubey: yeah. Hehehe Casey: However, that story has be became a part of the Ozarkowlers folklore. ⁓ sightings continue into modern times. In the fall of 2014, Ark Arkansas's Game and Fish Commission received reports of a large bear like creature, including one from a motorist who claims they nearly collided with this unidentified animal on the road. Mackenzie Hrubey: ⁓ my god. Casey: Later that year yeah however later that year an Ozark television station received photographs that were said to show the Ozark Hallor. But after contacting the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, officials stated they had not confirmed any Ozark Howler sightings. and believe that the photographs were a hoax. I could not find these supposed photos. I honest did you find it? Mackenzie Hrubey: Wait, I think I found it. Y yeah, it looks like a coyote with like fucking horns and like a long ass tail. Casey: Yeah, that's how most of it's depicted. Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah, that's exactly what it looks like. Casey: Isn't that weird? Mackenzie Hrubey: ⁓ my god, there's multiple of them. Yeah. Casey: So they think that was just a hoax. But my question is Mackenzie Hrubey: It does look a little bit like the computer topic, but what's that next to you? Casey: Have you ever heard of A B C and not the alphabet? Mackenzie Hrubey: Well, I've heard of like that as an algorithm for like ⁓ no, that's not what I was that's also an algorithm for like life support. I've heard of Alien Big Cats, but mostly in like England. Casey: Alien big cats. You you've Yeah, no. You've never So while I was researching this the entire time, I'm like, this is a fucking ABC. This is an alien big cat. And while I know like I think most sightings of alien big cats don't have horns or things like that or really how, but I what makes this any different? Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah. It doesn't seem any different to me. Casey: Th there's no rules or regulations that say alien black or alien big cats d can't have like horns or anything like that. I'm sorry. There are the greys. There are the fucking aliens with the spikes in their heads. you know, the blues. There's a lot of different aliens out there. Mackenzie Hrubey: I did think that Alien Big Cat was less about extraterrestrial and it's more about the alien. The word alien that meant like not native to like this area. Kind of like Alien Big Cat ABCs in in England, or ongoing sightings of like a big ass, like Black Panther, but they're not native to that area at all. Is it also used to talk about like extraterrestrials? Yeah. I mean that would be kind of cool if it was. Casey: Thought so. Am I creating something up? Mackenzie Hrubey: I mean if you are, then I fully promote this being another possible definition. Casey: Am I making this up? I thought alien I don't know. I p if you ask me, I think it's a fucking alien. An alien big cat. And not like the actual ABC, but like it's a whole species of alien black cats. Mackenzie Hrubey: I don't know. Yeah. W we all know that you You love aliens. Let's let's get real here. Casey: I do like aliens. Mackenzie Hrubey: I think if an alien com came down today and was like, Casey, board my ship, you'd be like, Yes, Sky Daddy, whatever you want. Yeah, yep. And I love that for you. And please write. You know? Casey: No questions asked. Pl if I can. If I can write, I'll what if I just send you an A B C? I'll just send one to your backyard. Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah. Or like send me like prinker stuff. An alien big cat. It I'm I think my cat might be confused, but maybe it'll just integrate and we can just keep it as like a pet, you know? Casey: Yeah. Or it can just guard your house. Mackenzie Hrubey: That's true. Do alien big cats sorry, does the Ozak howler eat people? Casey: No, it there so that honestly this is all I have for the Ozark Howler. There's not a lot at all. Other than we think Daniel Boone saw it and s it's just it just howls. Mackenzie Hrubey: Well it seems non menacing. Maybe it's just sad. Like maybe it's just really lonely out there in the woods. Casey: It doesn't I've saw stories where it's there was one where they're like, this is a woman who which I don't want to touch too much because I think we're gonna touch on this in another episode. But I suppose a woman who was murdered that might be the reason for the howling. ⁓ Mackenzie Hrubey: The fucking La Llorona again? Like some La Yorona bullshit? Casey: Possibly, but I don't know. I No, it does not involve a lake or a stream. I didn't see any encounters where the Ozark Howler is aggressive. I think it's just there to simply scare people. It just likes to scare the shit out of people. Mackenzie Hrubey: Does it involve a lake or a stream? Are there bodies of water? Or a rock. If I was out in the Ozark Mountains and I heard something absolutely going hog wild and like what's happening for me? Casey: The Ozark Mountains are absolutely fucked. If you ask me. Mackenzie Hrubey: I will clean my pants. Casey: Like, I'm sorry, people say that the Appalachi Appalachian Mountains are scary. I kinda think the Ozarks a little more extreme. Mackenzie Hrubey: Sounds like it. Casey: Not a little. It's a lot more extreme, I think. Mackenzie Hrubey: I think the Ozark Mountains are spooky because it to me they sound like kind of swampier than Appalachian Mountains. And I don't know, swamps involve crocodiles and things that you don't know and snakes and fucking water moccasins. Did you know one time we took a family trip to the Ozarks and I was gonna go swimming into the lake off of the dock, and you know what was fucking in the fucking water? Fucking black water! Casey: Yeah. What? A water moccasin? Mackenzie Hrubey: was in the water and my mom was like, ⁓ yeah, look, there's a snake. And so we didn't go off the dock. But you know where we did go? We went to like kind of like watering hole that the locals went to that was like a little beach. And then I was out there bobbing in the water and then not but ten feet from me there is baby. Somebody put their fucking baby into an inner tube and there was a fucking fucking snake chasing that goddamn baby. But thank God it was there because you know it would have eaten me instead. Casey: Is Are water moccasins poisonous? Mackenzie Hrubey: Yes Yes they are. Casey: ⁓ so it's just like a cotton mouse snake. Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah. Casey: Ew. Mackenzie Hrubey: Yep, yep, yep. So that was my Ozark experience. So not knocking anybody from the Ozarks. Listeners, please write in with your gigantic Horfine Snake experiences or if you have heard the Ozark Howler. But I'm not sure I'm not too but Yeah. Casey: Have you heard the Ozark Howler? Ew, fuck no. But again, guys, I know this is another very brief one, and as I say always, every cryptid needs their time. Okay? And everybody, everybody deserves their little bit of spotlight. Also, ⁓ please correct me if I got ABCs wrong. I'm thinking extraterrestrials. Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah. We we're here to talk about everybody. Casey: ⁓ not just an ha alienated species. I still think they're aliens. Mackenzie Hrubey: Very very much. ⁓ it's I mean, it's possible. You think everything's an alien. Think this what's alien. Casey: I think he might have contact with them. Mackenzie Hrubey: You're an alien, Casey. Casey: How do you know we're not? Mackenzie Hrubey: I mean honestly, I'm pretty sure that like squids are aliens. Casey: Why squids? Mackenzie Hrubey: We'll talk about it later. Let's do an episode on the Giants Quaid. Casey: We are going to. ⁓ I i I don't know. Again, this could all just be a fucking stimulation. We don't know this. Mackenzie Hrubey: Well, I enjoy No one knows anything. We're just doing our very best. Casey: We're just doing our very best. Anyway, guys, I digress. If I keep talking, we're gonna go down a whole rabbit hole. But let us know what you think the Ozark Howler is, if it's anything, if it's out there, if you've heard it, please write in. I wanna know. Mackenzie, what do you rate the Ozark Howler? Mackenzie Hrubey: Yeah. I'm gonna rate it a three because I've heard a a fair amount of like weird fucking black panthers out in the woods and like that being a thing and I wonder if it's just Greech and it's a black panther. So I'm gonna go three. You know what? No, I'm feeling generous. We're gonna go three and a half today. Thank you. Casey: Wow, you are so generous. I'm like three and a half for the last two. I think. What did I do to deserve you? Mackenzie Hrubey: I love you so much. You're so amazing. Casey, how do you rank those or cowler? Casey: I'm gonna give it a three because I yeah, I think it's I think it's an ABC. Rather that be an alien species or an alien bl cat thing that comes out of the sky. Which is what I prefer to listen to. Mackenzie Hrubey: Wow, less than me? I mean, could you imagine? Like I would like to think, what if they were like bipedal cats? Like they'd get up on their back legs and like wander around. Anyway. Yeah, I digress as well. Have you watched that one Scooby-Doo movie where they're on like the fucking island and like like it's encajan country? Yeah. Yes! That's what I'm picturing. Casey: That is creepy. All the cats? Yes. And the Yes. That's like one of the big ones. That was like one of the best ones. Mackenzie Hrubey: That was creepy. That one still haunts me. I've had I've repeated nightmares about that one. I'll tell you about them later offline. Yeah. Yes. Casey: I love that one. ⁓ your Scooby Doo Nightmares? But I don't know. Alright guys. That's it for us this week. And we will see you next Monday with another cryptid. ⁓ you know where to find us. Like, share, subscribe, and that's it. Alright guys. Bye. Mackenzie Hrubey: Bye.
