Spencer: All right. What is up, everybody? Welcome back to another to the twenty-three personnel podcast. I'm your host, Spencer, joined by Michael. Michael, what's Michael: how embarrassing. You you caught me in the middle of a of a set. Doing some dumbbells. This is Spencer: I have three? Five? Michael: a this is a five. You you look out now. Okay. Spencer: couldn't tell it's purple. Michael: Alright, I gotta I gotta put that away. Hang on. Spencer: Getting those those red zone reps in. Preparing to Michael: Yeah, I didn't that's yeah, that's it. I I kinda neglected to pay attention during red zone class at fall camp. So getting some extra five pound weights and to really drive it home. Spencer: All right. We're gonna talk about red zone tonight. we're gonna do a final recap on the ACU Wildcats game, as we do every every Tuesday after a game, get to some more Thought through. Thoughts. Not just Michael: Hut through thoughts. Spencer: not just impressions, not just instant reactions. Actual review and recap. we're gonna talk about update to the coaches poll. We're going to get into the injury slash availability report. we're going to talk about the preview for this upcoming game, Oregon State. We're gonna mourn the another week of not having a CBF graphs matchup. And probably gonna be without that the entire season because it looks like that is now a paid service for coaching staffs, not just for us fans. Get you our projections. Predictions, not projections, predictions. We already gave you the projection. Look around the rest of the Big 12. I'm not going to infringe upon the Red Ritter recon Big 12 whip around. Whoach. Sorry. I'm sorry. I said I wasn't gonna do it and I didn't. Michael's gonna give you a soccer update. But before that, Michael, we have not one, but two legal updates. Michael: man, I love legal updates. This is two twenty Spencer: the first one. Michael: twenty-six college football. Legal updates have its own segment. Spencer: The first one you can actually take off your lawyer cap because the Big Twelve has withdrawn its lawsuit against Texas Tech only two and a half months after the preceding action has resolved, because the Big Twelve filed this lawsuit June fifteenth. to be able to enforce conference rules against Texatech if they were to play Brendan Soresby. June 16, Brennan Soresby withdraws, removes himself from the Texatech football program. Texate football and Brennan Soresby mutually partways. And then Almost three months later, Big Paul's like, Okay, we're good. Michael: Yeah, just kidding. I I I want to give them all sorts of grief for waiting so long, but it's it's almost as if they had a calendar timer set for after Texas Tech plays their first game. And if Brendan Sorsby is on that team then this is moving full steam ahead or we're withdrawing it. It it seemed like that was just clearly the delineation and they weren't they weren't set to change that for any reason and I don't know why. I mean it's it seems like it would be pretty simple. Spencer: They didn't wanna prel they didn't wanna prematurely withdraw the the lawsuit and text it like, ha, just kidding, he's still on the roster. Michael: Yeah. Yeah. Well this yeah, we somehow signed him up as an as an analyst and he can suit up Spencer: He's a defensive Michael: because of a weird bylaw that a very crafty lawyer found. Spencer: The quote Okay, one, it was this was a Friday afternoon news dump that happened on a holiday Monday. Again, probably waiting till after the first game. It wasn't just like holiday, it was But that doesn't that doesn't help my narrative against the Big Twelve. the Michael: Yeah. Spencer: the quote, Michael, that we got from the conference feels like a direct response to Sean Dylan's question at Big Twelve Media Days. Do you remember how he how he finished his question? twice, he said it twice. He asked, How can we as Texas Tech fans believe that we are moving ahead as sixteen strong? Michael: wow. Okay. Spencer: Which was of course that was a callback to initial quotations from the conference, right? So the sixteen strong, but it just feels like the repetition now feels like now we're together. The quote says Big Twelve Conference and Text Tech have have resolved this matter internally. What bit about this has been internal? Nothing. We are moving ahead together as a conference, comma, 16 strong. Michael: Hats off, Sean. Spencer: I'll believe it when I see it. Michael: Well, I and this will lead into your next legal update, but the timing of this could have something to do with another conference Spencer: Louise Michael. Michael: threatening andor not so much just threatening anymore, actually suing somebody. Spencer: We may have lost Michael. so as we wait for him to come back. I have well one, we already mentioned the the Labor Day holiday thing. Timing-wise, to Michael's point, may have been wait until after the first game. Two, what took so long. Again, going back to that point. But three, I think it was it was then confirmed that Texas Tech will not be shouldering any additional financial burden from the lawsuit. I know that some of the A'Ds of the poor athletic departments. So the athletic directors of said poor departments are very much butthurt that TechStech will not be paying any additional for the Big 12 seeking legal action. Michael, I feel like we lost you for half a second. You were you were gonna say this leads into my next point. We're gonna we're gonna take our eyes. Eastward, but what were you gonna say? Michael: Pretty much that, hopefully not stepping on what you said while I I lost connection. I don't know what happened. But anyway, the I I wonder if the timing of well, I'll just go ahead and say it. Of the SEC's troubles had something to Spencer: Mm. Michael: do with the Big Twelve deciding to squash their issue this weekend too. That could have been thrown in with the timing and apologies if that's why you what you said while I was over here frozen for a bit. Spencer: Hmm. No, not yet. I hadn't got there yet. but yeah, no, that that's that's that's where where I want to go next. it was it was hinted at like a a a distant but somewhat plausible action, possible action that the Big Twelve could seek to Have punitive damages against Texas deck up and two, including removal of them as a member institution. Of course, it would have had to include like enough support from the other athletic directors and presidents to do so. But the SEC, well, literally every every conference has come out and said, Hey, you can't play these certain players. And yes, and and LSU is like, Bet. Watch us do it. Now, to be fair. Fair, I hate to say he even say that, but to be fair to LSU, they did not even include them on the listed roster ahead of the game this weekend against Clemson. But they were not shy in flaunting the fact that they were going to pursue any possible avenue to put together a roster that they deemed would be helping them field the most competitive team. The SEC has said, no, we're not gonna do that. but L S U is not blocked back down. So much so that the SEC almost said big twelve, the SEC is calling together member institutions to a meeting on Thursday. with the agenda item of LSU's future membership within the con Now, what I saw and I I don't believe that it will ultimately get to the SEC expelling L S U. That's not going to they're not gonna cut off one of their more profitable, name recognizable brands. Like I if it was Mississippi State or Vanderbilt, maybe. But like within the realms of of the SEC, L S C was pretty pretty well cemented as like the we're not going anywhere and we're not going not going anywhere separately. But they are meeting about the potential to expel LSU. I think it's a a pressure point for the conference opponent LSU's like, hey, no, like we're we're very serious about this is how we're going to do things. Much like how I th how I think we all saw the Big 12 potential actions against Texas Tech. It's like, hey, we're going to come up with all these things that we could punish you with, including forfeiting your games, blocking you out of the conference championship game, all the all whatever they were talking about back in June. Whereas LSU kind of took a blind like, whatever, do it. Now they're like, Okay, call us on this one then. Again, I highly doubt Thursday afternoon, ESPN's gonna break the news, LSU being expelled from the SEC conference. Michael: I I'm I'm with you. I think just for content Spencer: Hm. Michael: I would I would just sit there like a I I don't know, like a pig at a trough. I I would just I would enjoy that so very much if it were to happen. Because then then what all of the what ifs from there, when is it in when does it go into effect? Is there a season essentially done and they're Maybe the non-cons will honor their games, but none of the SET teams will. Are they instantly independent? Are they forfeiting TV money instantly? Are they forfeiting all of their other sports instantly? baseball, basketball, volleyball, you know, volleyball's underway right now, soccer, women's soccer, I mean even golf, whatever. I mean, does h does it trickle into everything immediately? It's a fun thought exercise, but I come back to there's gonna be hopefully a lot of adults in that room on Thursday, and it won't come to that. There will be some sort of other agreement in place or or LSU can rightfully make the case that sure we fought for these guys, but they never actually set foot on the field. So can we just pretend like none of this ever happened? Question mark? I'm Ron Burgundy, but i it may not it's I'm very I'm very intrigued by all of it because the SEC has prided themselves of being above and beyond everyone. And and look at this. Spencer: Has Michael: Look at this crap. It whether it's true or not, Spencer, they have prided themselves as being the premier, the ultimate beacon, the light on the hill. The savior of college football. And then they're having this sort of turmoil. Days before week two games start. In the biggest sport in their entire conference? Love it. Give me more. Don't give in, LSU. Stand firm. Go Tigers. Spencer: curious, where's Georgia's announcement that we're not gonna schedule L S U? If they're so staunchly opposed, so much so that they were approaching the the merits of removing them from your conference. Michael: Well, because that's well, they've got a lot of pro Spencer: Where's that announcement, Georgia? 'Cause it's already on the schedule, 'cause then they have to go actually do something about it. Michael: The the thing is, un unlike gambling, which of course they have there no Georgia players on the roster that have ever gambled before in their lives, Spencer. They're they're just complete choir boys. They they only gamble behind the wheel. I'll put it that way. But Spencer: There it is. Michael: on games, never, never, especially games Spencer: Never. Michael: they're in. I mean, they will never do that. But what Georgia does have are an awful lot of NFL players and or prospects. So I think that's why they're keeping their mouth shut. Because if they see an open door to do this, you bet your butt they're gonna do it. We had we had 14 guys drafted last year. Well did they all make a roster? Well this one kinda didn't. Alright well call him back. What's he up to? I don't know how many players they had drafted. I may have been way short. But that's As you're as you're already pointing out, I know you're being snarky, but I I really think that's a lot of why so many s I Spencer: Be snarky? No. Michael: know why a lot of so many schools that love to grow love to throw stones. I I'd haven't seen Nebraska make an announcement either. You know. Spencer: Or Michigan? I w we'll we'll get to Michigan's. Michael: Yeah, or the New England Patriots or whoever that people that never play LSU. I mean Nebraska making that announcement against Texas Tech. Shoot. I don't know. Manchester United might have well have made that announcement against Texas Tech. Okay. Yeah, we don't play you guys. So that my feelings are not hurt. Terrible. Spencer: I couldn't care less about what Georgia thinks about Texas Tech's roster and scheduling us. Yeah. Michael: No. Spencer: Okay. so Michael: You can take your high horse and hand it to a player who shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car. Spencer: Have considered using this form of transportation? Michael: Have you considered actually riding your high horse? Spencer: Right. week one football in the books, Michael. Officially, now that we're past Monday night football, SMU Florida State put the the the cap on week one. We're so back. So back, Michael: we are. Spencer: Michael, in that we are rerunning twenty twenty five problems. Which we knew this on Saturday. Saturday night we talked about it. but let's get to some some final thoughts. I've got a few here. One, I want to hear your reaction, your thoughts to these, but also any anything you want to add. I mentioned it probably very poorly. Will Hammond quietly, very efficient. We we did talk about this. There were a couple of like you could nitpick and say, okay, you that that forcing the ball downfield that ended up in the interception could have been tied to something else I was kind of picking up on. Like it seemed like there were a couple of throws that were behind target. So maybe he was just processing a little half beat too slow, or he just he wasn't like there's just a a a drop in confidence there that led to like, is it really there? Am I gonna throw like whatever? That's gonna come. Everybody else beat it into in into my brain as all the other all the other podcasts. I I'm gonna repeat it here. That was his fourth game as a starter. That's essentially like this is his first season. This is like his first time out of non-conference play. You you made it through the non-conference games, game one. Like that's as far as we've gotten with him as a starter. Now, granted, this is his third year. and he's he very much more mature for his age, and and and as a player. But as the starting quarterback, that was game number four. When I say efficient, I mean every mo like there were there weren't a ton of shots down the field. He Hammond said so in in the postgame that the looks that they were getting from Abilene Christian on defense took away that. These essentially they were imitating or mimicking the the three three safety sky look that Iowa State made not famous, but they were known for a few years ago and limiting t teams like Texas Tech and keeping l everything in front of you. and the way to beat is you gotta be really surgical underneath and take what what they give you. you did that. You had one explosive play and and and you and I can talk about if it was lucky or good, but It wasn't the only thing you needed to have happen to to win this game. That's what I had on on Hammond. You got anything to added that? Michael: Yeah, just to if if you listen to the incident reaction, Spencer and I talked afterwards and I'll confess a little bit of that here. During the game live and in person, I I'm I kind of alluded to it, but I don't I don't think I really hit it home on Saturday w when we recorded, but I did not think that Hammond played a very impressive game at all. Just live and in person, it just felt like it was a lot of dink dunk stuff and and i I was not thinking, well this is here's here's comes twelve and baby. Here we go. Here comes the offense. But then I got home and I looked up his stats and I absolutely could not believe them and I felt so foolish and I felt very spoiled and all of the the things that you mentioned, you know, including leaving out in my head that this was only his fourth career start. Of one of those starts he got knocked out and towards ACL. So he didn't even finish that game. So it's a very limited sample size on this guy that we have. And up until yesterday, his starts have completely been as a QB two coming in. And I say yesterday. That was way wrong. that was several days ago, up until Saturday. But I that was my only real thing to add was just once I got home I realized how much better he actually was than what my dumb eyes remembered while while standing in a hundred degree heat, delirious. Spencer: Yeah, so he he was twenty-six of thirty-three for two hundred and ninety-eight yards. That's a career high passing yards for him. He w completed nearly 80% of his passes and still had eight point eight yards per attempt. Nine point is considered above average, like good. Like above average, good. Not just like, he's above average. Nine point and above is good. He was eight point eight. Nearly 80% of his complete nearly 80% of his passes. A couple of them were I would say like I remember two throws into the end zone to Kenny Johnson that weren't really close. Like they weren't. I think one bad not bad throw, but one throw incompletion was nullified by a defensive pass interference or holding call on ACU. and then a couple of drops. I go against him. So e even though I'm saying like there were some throws that were behind receivers, he still completed nearly eighty percent of his passes. One touchdown, one interception. The two ninety eight, again, career high for him. Okay. Re restating, re doubling down, where was the road grading ground game that I that we were kind of sold on? Four point four yards per carry versus an FCS team to me left a lot of questions. No a hundred and seventy. Yeah, 173 yards, four and a half yards per carry. Like you would take that in a Big Twelve game over a Big Twelve season. But against Abilene Christian, game number one, an FCS opponent. I would be hoping more for like the Kansas rushing, the the the rushing output you got against Kansas last year. I don't even know what you put up against Kansas, but think, you know, Dickey himself almost had 300 yards. So I would take Cam Dickey's performance against Kansas. but questions about that. Defense. Very much like Will Hammond. boringly very good. I say no flash in in the notes here, limited flash. Definitely no frills. You had a couple of blitzes, but really you you were getting you were moving the pocket and and and getting pressure with the four you were sending. I did see some blitzes from Austin Romain. He was he was close on one. and then you were getting some movement with your defensive ends. But you gave up a hundred and ninety-four total yards. 3.7 yards per attempt. We talk we talked about Will Hammond being good at nearly 9.0 yards per attempt. You held their offense to 3.7 yards per attempt through the air, 2.6 yards per carry, and three points, all while missing two starters and a all-world True freshman, but athletic freak on defense. You were down three of your top players. Your two safeties were back there. Was their first time starting. and it wasn't like you were starting a new guy and he was next to the, you know, it wasn't that you you played Malik Ascara next to BJ Jordan or Peyton Morgan next to BJ Jordan. Morgan and Ascara started side by side. I missed that. I didn't realize that BJ Jordan didn't play last month. this weekend and that he won't play again this weekend because he's serving out the two game suspension for violation of team roles. you're without Trey White. We'll probably be without Trey White again this weekend, although Ledamian Guyton is expected to be available. I had heard that he was held out this past weekend just for precaution. but you did that. You had one interception, one forced fumble from Ben Roberts. The defense nearly recovered that. I didn't I guess I missed this play. because I think it happened when we were driving back to get back home after the the watch party. after we we left the watch party. you had two defend like it happened the ball popped out of the the running backs hands so fast into the space, the physical space of two of your defenders. Like they didn't have enough time to to respond to it before it like bounced off of them. And then offensive lineman that was coming back towards the play fell on it. But between the fumble and then ACU re-recovering it was like half a second, maybe it happened so fast. But you had two guys there, nearly recovered it. That interception and that forced fumble were on back-to-back drives. We talked about this in the preseason stuff. You forced turnovers last season in the second half and almost like a snowball effect. That could have been the snowball effect that just. Absolutely buried ACU. Had you turned him over twice and scored on him, y I mean, it it could have been way different. Not that like ACU then took that re recovered fumble and drove down and scored and made anything interesting, but there is that. So defense. Without your one of your main pass rushers and a and and a staple in the back end, you were still very good. I, because it's an outlier in the worst possible way, have no concerns yet on what happened on special teams. and really on your coverage. your kicker, I mean, you had a touchback every other kick and your field goals weren't Like it wasn't like you snuck one through. They were there was no no nervous seconds, no breath holding, like like no. Again, boringly efficient. He kicked the ball, it went up, it went through the uprights from every distance. He he he booted it. So for me, not concerned about special teams because that was an outlier so far in the other direction than what you've seen under Kenny Perry. I'm not worried yet. Penalties. You had five. No pre-snap or red zone penalties. Hello. The the drive where you saw ACU actually have a sustained drive, it was helped by two pass interference calls, defensive pass interference calls, that were you could debate whether or not they were actually defensive pass interference calls. And then you had an offsides slash or and a twelve men on the field for punt coverage. So there were three of your penalties. The the punt coverage one, you gave ACU a first down on that. Then they went three and out and punted the ball back to you. Like it it didn't it didn't sustain that drive. They got three more plays. I think they may have even lost yards on the following three plays after that penalty and then punted it you again. so I am feeling positive about that direction. Just jump in if you anything. I'm just gonna keep rolling. yeah. Michael: It can you hear me? One? Okay, my computer is freezing all over the place, so I'm I'm trying not to try not to stop your flow. no no big worries here on special teams. Only had two reps at the at the punting position. Hundred and one yards and two punts. That's great. We'll take that. So yeah, I just thought just thought I'd throw in little punter stats for everybody. I'm sure they were dying to know. It was fif fifty one and a half. Spencer: Fifty five yards per punt. no. You said a hundred and one? Fifty point. Yeah. Michael: Yeah, fifty point five. Yeah, that's whatever it was. I had to close that window because it was freezing my computer and so now I'm lost. But anyway, I'm back. Spencer: the other thing, we mentioned it, but like I actually went back, okay, looked at time of possession. Text attack held held the ball for 32 minutes and 12 seconds. ACU had it for just under 28 minutes. I didn't notice it until I was re-watching the game and I was watching it on the Hulu app. You can, you know, skip forward 10 seconds. It was timing up perfectly that like I could click it twice and be just about set for the next play. ACU was like click click, and I could sometimes almost get a third one in there, depending on like how they were how I could tell they were lining up or not lining up yet. So both teams felt very intentionally slow, if not just deliberate. There was no like even. I wouldn't say hurry up, but I mean like there was no. There was no pace or tempo to it that was like accelerated. Michael: I somehow missed that live, but that makes so much more sense based off how long those drives took off the clock, especially when Tech was able to get the ball going on the ground. And I retroactively, now that's being pointed out to me, I love it. I'm not a pro tempo guy. We've harped about this for years. You don't run tempo for the sake of running tempo. There are Spencer: Thanks, Neil Brown. Michael: times yeah, there are times to do it and it should not just be every single drive because that's what we do. And I I think that's one thing I've really liked about Leftwich is he has adjusted from what Kitley would do because I felt like Kitley was a very much pro tempo guy and were snapping the ball at thirty seconds no matter what or twenty, whatever it is. And I just was like never quite there with that. And I I know it's kind of the use it or lose it mentality. There might be some instance where you really wish that you had been able to run tempo correctly or in a in a certain area, but you didn't get enough in-game time to really experiment with it. But I would much rather take our chances snapping the ball at fifteen or or whatever it is, and just kind of letting Letting our guys get set, letting the defense get set. Let's look around, let's see what's going on. Who knows? They're probably communicating with Hammond a little bit during that s that time. And that could be what's helping him too. So I I like it. And I know that they probably still have the ability to if they're down seven before halftime and get the ball with a minute forty five left, I bet they can run tempo if they need to. Spencer: Sorry. Yeah, I I know I I I took a shot at Neil Brown. I think Kingsbury was very bad at that too, about knowing when to go fast. Michael: Yes. All the time. All the time, Spencer. All gas, no brakes. That's not either of those guys, but it's it's philosophy. Spencer: Yeah. But like so we we mentioned Textech had four, yeah, four first half possessions. So we talk about like it's low scoring game. Yeah, low Michael: I don't it's that's rare. Spencer: scoring game offensively. It's like 'cause you limited your own possessions. And obviously, what we're talk about next red zone stalls or near red zone stalls. You gave four field goals. I went back and rewatched all of the series leading up to it. I have a interesting enough, on three of them, Michael, they ran the same kind of play on first down, second down, first down. So on first down on two of them, second down on the other one, they ran the same outside zone slash stretch play. That netted nothing or negative yards on every single one of these. I was like, maybe, maybe we we eliminate that play call from our red zone offense. Or we figure out how to block the backside because almost every one of these was chased down from the back. Michael: Mm. By Spencer: Okay. Michael: it by an FCS team. Spencer: Yeah. Okay, so your first field goal, this is you were up 14-0. Hammond's interception was on the previous drive. So you throw the interception, you get the ball back. this is set up. You get into the red zone by Kenny Johnson catch up the sideline. defensive holding, this is on that that that call I was talking about earlier, gets you first and goal at the seven. So first and goal from the seven. You threw a sh a back shoulder. Ball to Kenny Johnson, wherein Hammond looks nowhere else, gets the ball, looks right, and then throws it. And it it didn't feel like it was a very competitive ball from Hammond to Johnson. Like there was not much of a shot at it. It felt forced because of how it was like a very one one read, one quick read, and chucked it. And it was like that wasn't even a good throw. So, okay, second and seven, second goal from the seven. You pass it to Dickie out of the backfield. He picks up two yards. So it wasn't the outside zone stretch play, but again it was to Dickey so Dickey, I hate to put like put this on Dickey, all four of these, he was he was a part of the play on first or second down that got between two yards or negative yardage. I I don't know what else to do with that. Third down, third and goal, pass to the back of the end zone to Hudson where he may have stumbled. It was a little bit behind him. All the things he tripped, whatever. Incomplete. You kick the field goal. You go up 17 to 0. Your second one. Curry intercepts the ball. First play of the second half, returned it to the 13. First down. Outside zone stretch read to Dickey, he gets one yard. Second and nine, outside screen pass Jacoby Williams, he loses three yards. Third and twelve, Hammond goes through his reads, finds Dickey. It's a dump, not a dump off, but a a over the middle pass to Dickey, picks up five yards, fourth and seven from the ten. You kick a field goal, you go up seventeen to three. The third one, you're up twenty to three. You take possession after three and out, you have a 10 play, 52 yard drive, stall ends up stalling at the ACU fifteen. but before then, first and ten from the thirteen. So you didn't you didn't get like a first and goal. First and ten from the thirteen, you take another one of those back shoulder shots to the end zone to Kenny Johnson. I'm so sorry. where there was no sh no shot at the catch there. Second and ten, outside zone stretch run to Dickey tackle for loss, loses three yards. Third and thirteen, play action shot to Hudson in the end zone, ball gets tipped at the goal line and like it shoots straight up in the air. I don't remember that one. Kick the field goal there. You're at 23 to 3. And then your last field goal. you take possession after ACU attempted a 51 yard field goal and credit where credit's due, that was a great attempt on their part. It was a good looking kick. It had the distance, it barely drifted off to the left. You took over at the 34. You had a big chunk play. You got a 31 yard pass to Johnson. You got first and 10 from the 24. And first and 10, outside run for Dickey. There it is again. No game. Second and 10. This was the the the play I actually liked. I I liked the formation. I like the the creativity. I think the direction where it was going. This was your diamond formation where you had all three of your running backs together. But it was a swing pass to to Cook Williams. Loss of two yards. Third and twelve from what is it? The sixteen at this point. no, this is this is one that was just outside the red zone. Michael: That's the twenty six, yeah. Spencer: Yeah. Third and twelve back shoulder deep shot of TC at the goal line. He had a great shot at it. the defensive back ended up breaking it up. TC looked like he was kind of shaken up a little bit. He was a little ginger getting back to the sideline. You end up kicking the field goal there. You take a twenty six to three lead with a minute fifty two left in the third quarter. So field goals two, three, and four all happen in the third quarter. So of your like three possessions in the third quarter, field goal, field goal, field goal. One after you had an interception to start the second half and returned it to the thirteen like you nearly had to pick six to start the second half. So then end up kicking a field goal and then go three more. And again, I don't I don't know what the correlation is here with Dickey and trying to get the ball to him or forcing to him, and it's not working on Saturday. But literally, all of these possessions had a play that went to Dickey for no more than two yards. It ended up setting up a second and long, or you know, unmanageable. I share that. Again, not to pile on Dickey. I love him as a player for Texas Tech. He wouldn't have had the most rushing touchdowns in any Big Twelve running back last season unless you were feeding him the ball in the red zone. I'm not saying he's not not, you know, the answer or an answer. But on Saturday, all four of these field goals had something to do with Dickey not being able to pick up. enough to keep the chains moving. Or w whatever, you know, not n not enough yardage on that play to set you up in a second and manageable, third and manageable whatever. So Michael: I wonder if we could give 'cause speaking of, I mean if if that with that being the case last year, I wonder if we could give Patterson and his group a little bit of a of credit. Perhaps this was a more common occurrence that we really noticed last year in the red zone was getting the ball to him and and him breaking you know, maybe breaking seven, eight yards or whatever it whatever it might take, moving the chains. Maybe they noticed that and and thought, Well this is this is how we're gonna sniff this out. First or second down, they're probably gonna dump it to him in some form or fashion. And we will be there. Spencer: So s something else along that along those lines, that point, I heard I don't remember what episode it was on, where it was the Madden Report with Chris Level and Aaron Dickens or Locked on Tax Attack. they mentioned there was obviously some juice from ACU, whether it was Keith Patterson or Graham Harrell, like there's juice for them to come into your house and to play well. Michael: Sure. Spencer: Whereas you don't necessarily had that same motivation. And almost like not that you were bored or that you just expected to win and you were just going through the motions. But we've seen if you don't take teams seriously, not just XT, if you don't take a team seriously who has some motivation, you can find yourself in sticky situations. Michael: Well, historically, Texas Tech has often been that juiced team. We've we have often been Spencer: You've been the hunter, yeah. Michael: yeah, we have often been the one that is been slighted in some form or fashion or or a perceived slight, if you will, sometimes manufactured, not quite to the Baker Mayfield level of manufacturing a a beef, but it's been Spencer: Did you see his Michael: there. Spencer: his contract, his renegotiation, his his new contract with the Buccaneers? Michael: No. No I didn't. Spencer: 55 million per receiving three-year 165. Michael: Fi per year? For Baker Mayfield? Spencer: Fifty five million dollars. Michael: I love the NFL. I'm very excited. Spencer: All right. Michael: We'll talk about them at the very end. Not not the Bucks Spencer: Yeah, we'll talk about football. Okay. Michael: in general, but NFL. Spencer: okay. Anything else on ACU before we we move on to polls, injury, and then organ state. Okay. Michael: No nothing that I want to touch on. Spencer: Poll update. Taxi Tech slid in the coach's polls to number 13. You were 12 to 13. Couldn't care less. You didn't you didn't play particularly well. Again, crossing fingers. You are fighting like hell for number five. I want number five. And if it's like if you if if the Big 12 gets crapped on all season, your strength of schedule gets crapped on all season, you just take it like a champ and say, you know what? Sure thing, boss. Take your number five Michael: Yeah, we have a Spencer: seating at the end of the year and just deal with it. Michael: That's true. We really haven't played anybody. Give us your give us your Boise State, your J your James Madison. Spencer: You're at New Mexico. Could that be a juiced matchup of five twelve? Michael: Yes. Ooh. Regional lookout. Spencer: Gosh, 'cause here's something else. I I I I Took up for Tex Tech Online scheduling is like I th I'm not gonna change my mind. Was like Texas Tech is not responsible for the rest of the Big 12 and how good they are. So we we can't do anything about their about their appearance on our schedule. We have tried like hell to put good teams on our schedule and they've told us no. And the other teams that have been on them for a long time, y'all are y'all are crapping on. It's like, well, they weren't. This bad when we got them, or they were always as bad, but they've always played a specific role on the schedules. What are we to do? But okay. BYU after they shellacked the very terrible Utah Tech, stayed at 15. Utah slid or moved up one spot, 21 to 20. And then Houston. I'm curious about this one. They moved up two spots. After beating the Oregon State Beavers by thirteen points at home. Michael, do you think Texas Tech will get the same treatment if Texas Tech beats them by two scores on the road? Does Texas Tech move up two spots? Michael: I it with Texas Tech no knock on Houston here, but with Texas Tech being further up in the polls, I think it would require an upset. like a pretty rough one ahead of them for this to happen. But but no, I mean just off off the cusp, no. Spencer: How could you like if one team gets if one team gets to move up two spots for beating Oregon State, shouldn't Texas Tech move up two spots for beating Oregon State? Michael: Well, this ain't last year's Oregon State, brother, let me tell you that. And and I I do mean that. Yeah. Spencer: I don't I don't think so I don't think I win. I don't think I'd move at all. Michael: No, I I think they're gonna stay put unless let me go through who is above them. I'm not gonna say everybody, but like if if Oklahoma lost embarrassingly in An or I think they're playing in An Ann Arbor. They're playing against the windless Michigan Wolverines. So if o if OU did lose embarrassingly to that, then or A and loses at home versus Arizona State, then I think you might see tech jump. But I I think you've got to see someone ahead of you lose. You're not gonna You're not going to get the will of the voters because what happened to you in the AP poll Spencer: No. Michael: is Texas Tech went down a spot because you had to make room for Alabama. Because Alabama put on a 48-10 win against Eastern Carolina. Guess what? Ruffin McNeil's not there anymore. Spencer: Took care of Mitch Griffiths. Michael: But anyway, it was enough for the AP voters to go, well, obviously you've got to put Alabama above Texas Tech. So Spencer: It's fine. Michael: That happened. I know. I agree. Spencer: Taxtech did nothing to to to garner any favor there. whatever. BYU Michael: I just like to give a little shot to to the Spencer: Yeah. Michael: Crimson Tide when I can, that's all. Spencer: BYU also slid down a spot 14 to 15. Utah moved up 21 to 20. Houston 23 to 22. So they moved up a spot. already kind of mentioned it throughout the pro episode so far. Trey White considered needed week to week. I probably won't be back this week, but I haven't heard otherwise. Guyton is probably expected to be back, assuming there's no setback or he's he's progressing. Brennan Jordan was going to be out two weeks regardless because of a violation of team rules. And the other defensive player that I heard was we were without on Saturday was cornerback Ashton Hampton, although he was not expected to be in the rotation much until later in the game. All right. It's been long enough. Let's get the Oregon State preview, Michael. They are winless so far in 2026. Coming off a two and ten season last year, fired their head coach, hired the former defensive coordinator from Alabama, Lamarcus Shepard. And they are winless in 2026. Heading to week two, SP, SP Plus has them at the number 90 team in the country, Texas Tech. Took a great tumble from 8 to 14. You will get a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on S S CBS. Pacific Northwest weather strikes here, Michael. This is a Michael: Hmm. Spencer: September kickoff, 4:30 in the afternoon, high of 66. Light rain. Love it. like I said, they went two and ten last year, already off to an own one start when they lost. To Houston this past weekend, 33 to 20. Both teams have committed five penalties on this season. Texatech, five for 60 yards, one on offense, four on defense. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State. I'm so used to saying Oklahoma State with OSU. Oregon State, five penalties, 42 yards. When the Beavers have the offense, what? When the Beavers are on offense, when they have the ball, they are the hundred and third. Offense according to SP Plus. And they will be facing the number 14 defense. They are led by Mitch Dallin, offensive coordinator on the field. They are led by Braden Adkinson. These numbers, I had to take a I had I like had to double check, Michael. These are this is what he did against Houston this weekend. 29 of 48. 16.5% of his complete passes were completed for 376 yards. One touchdown, no interceptions. Michael: And it rained the second half. Yes. Spencer: Hmm. Can confirm. I was here. Michael: Yeah it's true. You would know. Spencer: There th I think they even had like a delayed start to the second half. They were delayed. Michael: They did. They absolutely did. Yeah. They I think they were just about to kick off the second half and then and then they hit a delay. Just the worst worst timing. Spencer: Yeah, sacked four times. whatever Mitch Dallin is as an offensive coordinator, he is not a believer in the ground game. Or maybe Oregon State is not very good at their ground game, but they put up 26 rushing yards, 1.0 yards per carry. They were led by running back Cordy Glass, six carries, 25 yards. He had two or 4.2 yards per carry, no touchdowns. Running back AJ Newberry, seven carries, 17 yards, two and a half yards per carry. So they took a look because of the sacks, they took a lot of negative yardage there. Receiving, they were led by Jesse Legree, five catches for 136 yards, 27.2 yards per catch. Although he had a long of 71. So if you take that out, then he was four catches for seven sixty five yards, whatever that math is. Sixty five. Not bad, but not twenty seven and a half yards per catch. One touchdown. Behind Legree as tight end Eric Olson, four catches, 54 yards, 13 and a half yards per catch. And they had five guys that had between two and five receptions, between 28 and 36 yards. So they spread the route ball around. mean, their leading receiver had five catches, but 136 yards. So their top seven guys had between two and five catches. but between twenty-eight and a hundred and thirty-six yards. They were abysmal on third down, Michael. Four of fifteen, twenty-six point seven percent. Although once they got to the red zone, take note, Mac leftwitch, they were three of three of converting into touchdowns. Now again, it's apples and oranges a little bit. so far in the season, Oregon State 376 through the air, 7.8 yards per attempt versus the Tex Tech defense, 119 yards through the air at 3.7 yards per attempt. Textech gave up 75 rushing yards at 2.6 yards per carry. Oregon State put up 26 total yards on the ground for one yard per carry. Tech allowed. ACU to convert 40% of their third downs. That's gonna have to change. Oregon State only put up 26.7%. They scored 20 points. TechStech allows 10. The passing numbers give me a little pause. But if they are that one dimensional, your pass rush may feast. So now, when you have the ball and the Beavers are defending their end zone like crazy, they are the 77th SP defense going into your 13th ranked offense. They are led by defensive coordinator Mike Mike McIntyre. Now, Michael, that name sounded familiar enough for me because I looked him up. He was the def he was a defensive assistant at Mississippi State in 2025. He was the head coach. At FIU for 22 through 24. He was the defensive coordinator for Memphis at 21, 20 and 21. He was the Ole Miss defensive coordinator in 19. And then he was the Colorado head coach between 13 and 18. I was like, okay, that's where I know him. I remember him back. Anyways. They are At least not this past weekend versus Houston. They are not a very havoc creating defense. They only got Wegman once. They had one team sack, Will Haverland. And this is his first year playing on defense. He was the team's long snapper last season. They had three total tackles for loss. Will Haverland had one and a half by himself, Takari Hickel. Their other edge had another. One and a half. They had one interception, four passes batted down, two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery. Their tackle leaders. Edge Takari Hickel had nine. Linebacker Aiden Sullivan had nine. Defensive back. See, I even included the pronunciation guide here, Michael. Silasa Vendruwali. Had five. Michael: Nailed it. Spencer: Silasa Vindruwal. Now, the TechSech offense put up 471 yards, 298 for the year, 173 on the ground, 33 points per game. We talked about Will Hammond's numbers, just a recap on the rushing. Jacoby Williams is your leading carrier in terms of yards. He had 13 carries, 71 yards, 5.5 yards per carry and a touchdown. Cam Dickey, 14 carries, 48 yards, 3.4 yards per carry. Quentin Joyner, 10 carries, 43 yards, 4.3 yards per carry, and a touchdown. So you got 173 yards on about four and a half yards per carry and two touchdowns. Through the air, Kenny Johnson is your leading receiver. Four catches, 76 yards, 19 yards per catch. That says two touchdowns. That's incorrect. Zero touchdowns. Malcolm Simmons is technically your second leading receiver in terms of yardage, but one catch, 64 yards, Michael: Yeah, he is. Spencer: 64 yards per catch, one touchdown. And then Jacoby Williams, eight catches, 57 yards. 7.1, no touchdowns. Terrence Carter, three catches, 28 yards. Micah Hudson, two catches, 26 yards. Koy Aiken, so far down this list, two catches, 13 yards. Jack Carpenter, Jalen Jones, Cam Dickie, and Bryson Jones, also on here with I believe two catches. When you have the ball 298 through the air, almost nine yards per attempt. Oregon State defense gave up a 305 through the air at almost 10 yards per attempt, 228 on the ground at more than five and a half yards per carry. They allowed Houston to convert almost 54% of their downs and gave up 33 points. Now those numbers should come down. I would say should. I would expect to come down. A little bit at home, but against TechSeck offense. I don't know. Tech Steck as of this morning was a 27 and a half point favorite with an overunder 51 and a half. I looked at the SP plus matchup here, and I agreed with it. I adjusted it a little bit. I'm gonna take the Red Raiders to win this one 36 to 10. with a few field goals in here and to give up ten points, potentially your first defensive touchdown allowed through the season. But I'm gonna take the under on over on the over under 51 and a half, and I'm gonna take Oregon State to cover barely. Michael: I'm similar, except I'm taking the overall over on points. The over under is fifty one and a half. I've got fifty five total points scored in my prediction of Texas Tech Spencer: Ballsy, Michael. Michael: Well, you know, trying. Of Texas Tech winning thirty eight to seventeen. So like you, I'm I'm taking Oregon State to cover that twenty seven and a half, but I I'm You know, I I just feel like if Houston could beat him by two touchdowns, we should beat him by three. And that was basically where where I came up with that. I d I did come up with another we'll we'll go over this too. So last week, kind of out of nowhere, I had an overunder on number of series that Hammond plays versus ACU. And I came up with three and a half, which in retrospect was I I mean, are they really gonna pull him midway through the second quarter? Probably not. But anyway, that was the line I had. I picked the under, which was very dumb. Spencer picked the over, which was smart. So I've I've come up with another another over under, and I've done a little bit more research on this one for this week. So we talked about Oregon State's lack of running game, at least in Houston, where they averaged one point zero yards per carry. on just a handful of carries, I believe it was less than fifteen. Texas Tech only allowed two point six yards per carry versus Abling Christian. And so I took the average of that. And set the line at one point eight yards per carry, and I'm now going to see if Spencer is gonna take the over on that or the under on yards per carry allowed at Oregon State if it's set at one point eight. What what say you? Spencer: I'm gonna do a little research and go back to see what we did last year. my word. Michael: It's mm-hmm. Spencer: I okay, so I said over, but just barely. Like maybe you don't you don't force them to lose as many yards on sacks and that they're able to Michael: Or some some guy breaks a run for forty six, you know. It might be slippery. Spencer: I I don't I don't think that's gonna happen. But I think they're gonna 'cause okay. Shoot. So I said over and just barely. And I wanted to look back at what they did last year. Now, granted, this was in Lubbock and your defense. This was game three of the season. Michael, on twenty two rushing attempts, Oregon State put up eight yards. You held them to zero point four yards per carry last season. Michael: Well they've improved. Maybe. Spencer: So this is where I was like when I said, my gosh, like zero point four last season. Twenty two carries, eight yards. Michael: Well, I I just Spencer: So I actually have I have low confidence in this now, but I'm gonna take the over, but just barely. What what say you? Michael: I I refuse to believe that Houston's defense is that good. Maybe they are. And obviously Oregon State does not have a game plan to just run the ball down your throats. So I'm taking the under. I I would love to see Texas Tech allow one point five yards per carry. Something along those lines, but you never know. I just thought that might be an interesting thing to to look back on next week. when Texas Tech allows five Spencer: Right, hold on. Michael: yards per carry on some insane you know, two hundred yard rushing running back that has never eclipsed more than seventy. Some crazy thing happens. Okay, go ahead. Sorry. Spencer: All right. I'm gonna try and look up the SP plus. Kansas State actually intrigues me at at twenty-three, Arizona twenty-four. Where's Houston? Kansas forty one, Houston forty six, their defense is fifty five. Surely your fourteenth ranked defense is their is better than their fifty fifth defense. Michael: Yet you take the over. Spencer: I know. I said I have low confidence in this now. Michael: Too late. It's it's written. I see it. It is it is written. It is written. Spencer: It's I'm walking in, but like I shoot. All right, let's look around the rest of the Big Twelve. well let's let's look at w the Big Twelve from week one and then we'll do week two. Bethune Cookman at UCF, Michael. Bloodbath seventy three to six. Michael: Bethune got cooked, man. Been working on that all week. Was that was that any good? Was that any good? Spencer: Can I did did you watch do you no. Michael: No. Spencer: Did you watch any of this game? Michael: No, because it was by the time I had the chance to put the a game on, I was watching Georgia Tech ver host Colorado. So no, I didn't I Spencer: Can I Michael: I watched maybe just a little bit of it, but not enough to remember it. It just got out of hand quickly. Spencer: I watched one play, Michael. Let me tell you which play it was. It's the final play of the game where Bethune Cookman scored their touchdown. It was legitimately the la the last play of the game. And like time Michael: that's right. With four seconds left, wasn't it? I looked that up. Spencer: time expired. They didn't even kick the extra point. Michael: Yeah. I remember I remember that now because I'd been keeping up with the score. You know, my phone lets me up on these scores and it was, you know, fifty something to zero, sixty something to zero, seventy three to zero, like gosh, this is insane. And then I checked my phone, I think it was wasn't until the next day, like, wait, seventy-three to six. that would that would take me off so much to as a defensive player if if I were on the Golden Knights. Spencer: To lose a shutout. Michael: if I was their D C I would be so mad. Spencer: Colorado and Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech was a touchdown favorite. Ended up losing this one. Colorado wins wins fourteen to thirteen. Michael: What a finish. What a crazy finish on that game. love to see the gosh, I think Colorado had a punt blocked. Then Georgia Tech, I think, had a punt blocked. And then Colorado. Er I Spencer: Did a field goal kick or something. Yeah. Michael: I keep s I'm saying punt. I mean field goal. I gosh. It's week two. I'm I'm still getting back into it. But no, it it was a heck of a finish. It it looked like I I don't know what Georgia Tech was thinking. They kept calling all these timeouts while Colorado had the ball and had no timeouts. So therefore Colorado got Okay. So this will be a good time for me to just rattle through the rest of the scores, basically. I think he's gonna have to reboot some technical issues, it appears in pair land. But Georgia Tech goes on to lose that game and I think partially in thanks to their coach deciding to give Colorado a couple of free timeouts on that touchdown drive that got them within field goal range, at least scoring wise. And because after every timeout called by Georgia Tech, Colorado got a first down or had a big play. Whatever it was. Anyway Didn't agree with that then. Definitely don't now. Idaho, the Vandals went up to Utah and got stomped 66 to 14 on Thursday. That was it for the Big 12 on Thursday. Moving on to Friday, Kansas hosted Long Island and covered a 39 and a half Spencer: Yeah. Michael: point spread somehow with a fifty-one to six win. Spencer, are you back? Can you hear me? Spencer: I I'm so back. I'm sorry. I tried to move something and it like Michael: when you unplugged something? Spencer: and then unplugged and it's like and then it was like Riverside's like, new recording based on you changing your settings. I was like, what? I'm so sorry. So stupid. Michael: I know because I just I was trying to tell you that I could hear you in case because I have a internal log that becomes external very quickly when things go wrong. And so I was trying to tell you that I could hear you in case multiple expletives were dropped or not, but you handled that so well. I I would probably not have done the same. I I got us through f Thursday and Friday and we're ready to roll through Saturday if whenever you are. Spencer: Okay. coastal Carolina covered a 21 and a half point line in Morgantown. West Virginia wins 31-24 and watched zero seconds of any of these games. Oregon said at Houston and watched a bit of this one. Houston was nearly a three touchdown favorite. Ended up winning by 13. So Oregon State covered there. Southeast Missouri at Iowa State. Snuck in the cover, did the Southeast Missouri fighting football team. I don't Michael: Mm. Spencer: know their mascot. 38 to 10. It was a 29 and a half point line. Baylor versus Auburn. This is the one that was on the TVs in front of us right there as we were at Boomer Jacks, getting ready for a kickoff for Texas Tech. Auburn, ooh, they hang on. By the skin of their teeth, 17 to 16. You were at the game, Michael. Baylor scored. Baylor goes for two. Their guy literally, like, had he spun the other direction, had he reached the ball out, would have broken the plane and converted the two point conversion. Auburn holds them and then recovers the onside kick the next, and then just you know kneels out the clock, you know, one time. But like. That tight end probably going to be like replaying that over and over and over again in his mind the rest of his life. if you haven't seen it, Michael, I go back and see if you can watch that last two point conversion Michael: I will. Spencer: attempt. Boston College at Cincinnati. They made Cincinnati look like a decent team. Thirty-five to fifteen. Cincinnati was a seven and a half point favorite there. Covered. hate to see this one, Michael. Oklahoma State at Tulsa. Oklahoma State was a two touchdown favorite. Lost by two touchdowns. And the Tulsa head coach did not hold back. I don't know if you saw his postgame and stuff. He's like, it should have been worse. It should have been 30 to 10, 37 to 10. And like the people that were like, Michael: So he was kinda disappointed. Spencer: the people that like were watching the game was like, he's got a point. Like they they left him. Points like that. I know if turnovers or what. Michael: Yeah, my only my question lingering question, I I only watched the first half of that game and Tulsa had a goal line stand on Oklahoma State that made me wonder, can Oklahoma State run the football? The jury is out on that after Spencer: Caleb Hawkins, like what's the deal? Michael: Yeah, you you think they should be able to, but not yet. No. Spencer: So I saw this, and of course I was like, it w is easy to pile on, right? But I was like, of course, Michael: yeah, and it's fun. Spencer: of course, this is the outcome because it's two American teams going at each other. But you took parts of one American team and transplanted it onto a team that has gone two and twenty-two over the last two seasons. And we're supposed to be surprised that this is the result. Like, maybe. He's just not there yet. Michael: Yeah, hasn't won a game since what, twenty four? Spencer: No, they they they won a a game last season. They they haven't they they Michael: what was the stat then? Spencer: haven't won a they haven't won a big twelve game since like November of twenty three. Michael: Or maybe even like a power five game or or something. There was some other Spencer: Yeah, probably. Michael: stat that wasn't just Big Twelve. Okay, go ahead. Sorry. Spencer: Nichols at Kansas State seventy one to three. Michael: Boo. That tells us nothing. Spencer: You Utah Tech at BYU, the biggest line of the weekend, BYU is fifty one and a half point favorites. Looking it up at the Bill Connolly S P plus rankings of all hundred and seventy teams, whatever, Utah Tech was like in the three hundreds. But BYU wins sixty three to seven. Michael: Covered. Covered that gigantic strand. Spencer: And covered. Northern Arizona at Arizona. Northern Arizona covered. Arizona won 35 to 7. And then Morgan State at Arizona State. Arizona State covered handily 70 to 7. And then you got the Shucks, Humble as me. I didn't know you could shorten the quarters. dialogue from Kenny Dillingham when the opposing coach offered to Or made the concession like, let's let's start in the quarter in the second half or fourth quarter, whatever, like, I didn't know you could do that. So yeah, we'll we'll just do whatever he wants to do. Hmm. Okay. Whatever you say, sir. I would I would be remiss to point out though, Michael, that TechStech did that twice last season. Michael: Yeah, and I'm sure a s the storm delay had something to do with one of but yes, they did. Spencer: Still. Other games this past weekend, the big noon kickoff, North Texas at number six, Indiana. It was close until it wasn't. Michael: Right. Spencer: I remember turning it off. It like twenty four ten or whatever. I was like, this is and then the final score fifty two to sixteen. It's like Michael: Yeah. Gosh. I Spencer: something happened. Michael: I know because I was paying more attention to Oregon State in in Houston at that time. And so because Houston's game ended up being a delay, I thought, well, I'll watch Indiana, I guess. I don't know. And it was, it was just kind of like a snooze. Ugh Well they're they're obviously gonna win, but this doesn't look that great. But then it's Indiana, who k who cares? They if they win every game by seven, they'll be thrilled. They don't care, it's just about winning. And then they ended I saw the score a lot later. It's like, holy crap, they scored like twenty-one points in the fourth quarter, whatever it was. Spencer: Did you see I don't know if it actually broke his nose, but you see Josh Hoover's face? Michael: No. Spencer: He had like they had a such a bad face mask hole that like they literally turned his helmet around on his head and like it it like cut the bridge of his nose. Like you would expect like a like a boxer. You get to a broken nose, you get the cut right there, just gushing blood. Michael: yeah, it would be. Spencer: And then like came back from that to like throw a touchdown and and then go get medical attention. Clemson at LSU. This one wasn't was in a little bit of a weather delay Saturday night. Lane Kiffin's like don't care. Everyone wants to hate us, then bring it on. They won fifty one to ten. Was it was a Maced a Maced Ranch Up? Ranked Michael: It yeah it was. Spencer: matchup, Michael. Twenty-three Clemson at number thirteen LSU. Michael: just shocked Clemson got ranked. I just can't believe people just looked at what they did in the off season and thought, yeah, these guys rank Spencer: Yeah. If anybody was flipping around looking for some some non con research this past weekend, you could have seen Sam Houston at Troy Saturday night as well during your same time as your game. Troy ended up winning that one twenty four to twenty-one. I know nothing about that game. Michael: Me neither. Aside from that score. And you're right. Spencer: Sunday had a sorry had a handful of games. Washington State at Washington, Apple Cup in week one. Okay. Washington wins this one 24 to 10. Then they had two evening games. Wisconsin versus number four, Notre Dame at Lambeau Field. Notre Dame ends up winning this one 41 to 13. And then Louisville. Number 24, Louisville versus number nine Ole Miss in Nashville for some reason. 630 ABC. Olmus. you know what's probably like halfway between Don't be stupid. Michael: I I looked that up. Yeah, that's it's like four hours from Oxford and my wife who's from Louisville knows that Nashville's pretty close. It's like two or three hours from from there. Spencer: Yeah. Olmus ends up holding on under that one forty-one thirty-eight. And then Monday, we talked about SMU in Florida State filing getting week one under wraps. Number nineteen SMU at Florida State. SMU Mustangs pull this one out twenty-seven twenty-four in Tallahassee. Michael: Yeah, I read the I think what caused the weather delay was an equipment failure, which of course is really bad because then you better have a spare. And I think they had they there was some sort of short that failed a twelve hundred amp breaker and I think they had to go either bypass it or find another one. Yeah, it was it was actual piece of equipment that failed, not like, we had a fault and we couldn't you know, the breaker opened and we just need to close it. Like, nope. When a an outage is that long, someone hit a pull or s some equipment failed or the generation Spencer: Nothing. Michael: is gone. So it it it was it was a pretty pretty short outage considering what they probably had to do. Spencer: Well, a hundred minutes power outage due to a but Michael: I know. It's fun to be in the industry and tell people that that's a short outage for that sort of thing and they will absolutely not believe Spencer: We had a Michael: you. Spencer: we had a power outage. I can't remember when it was. I do remember it woke me up when it went when it happened just after three o'clock in the morning. then I had a hard time going back to sleep because you're just so used to the house noise, like the hum of your fans or the AC kicking on or refrigerators, whatever. And then your power goes out and then it's like dead silent. It was too quiet. I was like, I I can. literally hear everything. My kid adjusts and rolls over upstairs. I'm hearing it. Michael: Yeah. Spencer: I had a hard time go back to sleep. And then it it came back on a after five. But Samantha was like, she she asked me in the morning, it's like, so I read online that like technically food is probably unsafe in the fridge after four hours. Like, should should we have like been worried about getting the the generator up and going? It's like hold on. If the power out like if the fridge is out without a power, it's sealed. And if we're not opening it, it's gonna hold temperature Michael: Yes. Yes. Spencer: on its own for A while. I don't know how long I would trust like meats and perishable stuff, but like it's probably gonna take a while for it to get up to an unsafe temperature to be long and it's like, but definitely longer than four hours. Michael: Well it was the middle of the night too, where I'm not gonna pretend like it's Spencer: Yeah, it was three o'clock. And it was it was our indoor. Michael: yeah, it's not like it's not hot where you're at all the time, but it's the sun's not shining at least during that block. Spencer: Yeah. I couldn't tell you if by the time the power got back on, if like I noticed the house being all that much warmer. It was definitely still and that didn't help, but I don't think it was anyways. All right. Let's look around the Big Twelve this week two schedule. Kicking off Friday, Missouri at Kansas, September 11th, 7 p.m. Michael: There's some Spencer: on Fox. Michael: there's some good Big Twelve games this week. Just I mean, they're not all Big Twelve on Big Twelve, but like that one, Spencer: No, that's okay. Michael: Exhibit A, that's always an interesting one to me. I like that they revived it. Spencer: Yeah. Oregon is only twenty two and a half point favorites at Oklahoma State Saturday morning. Michael: I n I know. And I this one's intriguing as well with what happened against Boise State last week and is this gonna be a get right game for Eric Morris and the boys the boys in Oklahoma? Spencer: For who? I'm gonna say 'cause Oregon needed some some getting right as well. Washington. No, sorry, I skipped one. Arizona State at Texas A and Saturday morning. Michael: That's a fun one. Spencer: Could be. Michael: I'm intrigued. Spencer: Washington State at Kansas State? U T Martin at West Virginia. Arizona at BYU. Is this an On Kong game? Michael: Yeah, this was a question for you. I didn't know if I I didn't know for sure. I think it might Spencer: I think it's Michael: be. Spencer: See, I thought it was a I thought it was a conference game. Let's look it up real quick. Michael: Maybe it is. It's just awfully early 'cause I I thought maybe last year or the year before there was at least one. I know Kansas State Spencer: I I Michael: played somebody. Spencer: I think it was a I think Kansas State, Arizona State, I think it was a holdout from an early schedule, like a previous schedule. Week two. who who is it? Arizona BYU. Yeah, it's it's not marked as like a non conference game. Michael: Okay, all right. So the first official Big Twelve conference game is Saturday. Spencer: Of the season, yeah. Michael: Yeah, Saturday, September twelfth at two thirty on Fox. See that's an interesting one. Now there's a lot of these that are absolute stinkers and you're Hmm Spencer: Weeber State at Colorado. You're not interested in that one? Michael: No. Neither's Vegas. Spencer: No line. that one or the UT Martin at West Virginia. UCF at Pitt. Pitt's a seven-point favorite at home. Could be Michael: There's something there. Spencer: Southern at Houston. No? Okay. Western Carolina at Cincinnati? No? Okay. Iowa State at Iowa. Michael: Is Iowa gonna score fourteen? That's the spread. Spencer: Is I always state gonna score? Michael: I don't know. Yeah, fair. Tw twenty one to three, Spencer: I mean they Michael: I could see that. Spencer: they they could cover and win like seventeen to three. Michael: Well, that would be a push. Spencer: Well, okay. Michael: Gotta be eighteen to three. Spencer: Seventeen to two. Michael: Yeah, it's possible. Bad snap. Spencer: Prairie View AM at Baylor. Gramblin at TCU. Arkansas at Utah. Is Utah for real? Is Arkansas for real? Michael: See. It's got some juice. It's a good way to end the day. Nine fifteen. Spencer: Every team is in action. Every big twelve team. Michael: Correct. And I Spencer: And then here. Michael: I couldn't help but notice that every every cupcake game that didn't even have a Vegas line ended up on ESPN Plus. Spencer: darn. Text to tech will be on what you say, Fox or CBS? CBS. Michael: CBS. Yep. Spencer: Dun da da. Michael: Da da da da. Spencer: Big noon, Ann Arbor, Michigan, Oklahoma at Michigan. Is this game gonna end with 60 minutes or additional time? Michael: Yeah, I I listened to the SVP show quite a bit or the podcast. And one of their sayings is sign up for sixty. And so I I they may need to amend that to sign up for sixty colon Spencer: Sixty one. Michael: zero one. That was the name of their episode on 'cause they record an instant reaction to Well, I mean, you think we record late. My gosh, they were kicking off at like twelve forty five Eastern. And Spencer: Yeah, the the solid verbal guys I think start their now it's a like a it's a week instant reaction or weekly, but like they do it they start midnight Eastern. No not n not twelve forty five, but midnight. Michael: Well and and SVP's been kinda just chilling at home all day watching games, but Stanford Steve is on location at wherever game day was and has been for at least a day or two and he's been to the game and he's he's probably been up for like fifteen hours doing that podcast. Anyway, hats off to them for for doing that. But yeah, the the title of the podcast was just Sixty Colon O One. That was just all it was called. Spencer: Did you see the stat? It just cracked me. It was like until today, teams were a hundred and three thousand five hundred and twelve and zero when leading after sixty minutes. Michael: Well, and that goes back to even our instant reaction because before we recorded, I was just checking scores on my score app on my phone and you and I both mentioned it and I th and I I don't wanna assume what you knew or learned or whatever, but on my phone it was twelve to seven. It said end of fourth, which I always know, okay, that's not neck technically the end. But Spencer: It takes a second to go final, yeah. Michael: then it said final. It on the score app it said final and so I had that in my head and who knows that was maybe five or ten minutes before we actually started recording. And so I just briefly mentioned it and you you knew about it too, and you're like, yeah, at least we're not Michigan today or something. And so neither of us knew. It was Spencer: Whoops. Michael: it was what a shock to to come back from our, you know, hour of recording or whatever and see that no, never mind. Turns out. that it actually wasn't final and they got one more play and they got to win by one. So just kidding. Everyone. Every single person who has an app that was following the game that way. Or who turned the TV off after the end. Which I have been known to do. Especially if I Spencer: I mean, I turned the TV off after the end. Michael: if for a Michigan fan, I absolutely would have. I think I would have been like I would have waited and saw that it didn't work out and they And that's the game, folks. And yep. And that's it for me. And I'll turn the t T V off as well. So that one has I'm interested in that one. And of course, and Spencer: So I Michael: the next one, of course. I I can't help it. I have to be. Spencer: I'm I'm so like I have a hard time believing that Michigan cheated here somehow. But also, like, nothing that anybody has said or put forth to try to defend what happened makes any sense. Like, well, the they all sync the clocks and the and the the cameras and all this stuff 85 minutes before before the game starts. But the one they use just wasn't wasn't a part of that, or it was off. It's like then it wasn't synced. Or the one that's official, official somehow was not. Or Michael: that only the Big Ten pit crew could see. Spencer: Yeah. And I I I saw this, it was a is a clip, I think it was Joel Clatt talking to Mike Pereira. And he's Pereira essentially said, like, this is going back to when when they were initially rolling out review is like you basically saying you have to go with what the people can see. Like if you have an angle that's not on broadcast and then they're not showing, you can't base your decision on that because literally everybody's gonna see one thing and you're gonna rule opposite, and there's gonna be no defense of what you saw. So he's like, even if it's technically right, but only you have that angle and broadcast doesn't, you can't you shouldn't rule on that. He's like, Now I don't know like if they knew this, but they had that one angle that still showed there was time left. I don't know how, when that receiver touched the ball out of bounds, or after having jumped from out of bounds, where every other timer, clock, in stadium, official capacity, whatever, showed it had hit zero and then he touched it. Michael: Well and what was crazy is not two days later, and we we talked about it already, but a different aspect of the SMU Florida State game, because of the power outage they had, they were limited in so many facets of what they normally do, that there was a disclaimer on the scorebug saying official time kept on the field for about half the game. And in my mind, because this is what I told my wife, which was I'm sure she didn't care, but I said, you know, I wonder if they did that because of Spencer: Okay. Michael: the Michigan game. 'Cause that was the first ESPN game that had been broadcast since the Michigan debacle. And I'm like, Spencer: Mm. Michael: I wonder if this is just gonna be a new thing that every single scorebug's gonna have on it to keep people from getting mad or or whatever. But no, it was because of the syncing issues with getting all the equipment back online and getting everything running. So the official clock in the stadium, which back to what Pereira was saying. is what was keeping the time. And then ESPN was trying to sync with that clock like every commercial break or whatever, you know, best they could until I think eventually into the second half they were able to do it properly like they always do and that disclaimer w went away. But I was I was kind of gonna be really annoyed if th no. Is every game just gonna say this now? Is this just how is this how we're fixing this? Dang it. Spencer: The other Michael: Get get this crap off my screen. Anyway. Spencer: The other comment I saw that like brought into like, well, that's a good question. It's a good point. I guess it was like the play before where in an official capacity, the referee said game clock operator set the game clock to zero nine seconds or whatever. Like he like he literally said, We're resetting the game clock to z this time. Michael: That's pretty it should be able to sync up pretty good right there. Spencer: But that should be all of Maybe that one wasn't reset or wasn't reset properly or it didn't start at the same time. We we we kind of make not make fun. We've always kind of pointed out and and and found it entertaining like the home cloak clock operators and like basketball gyms. Like sometimes you get a very you know, a very home friendly clock, but Michael: Did that clock move during that free throw attempt? Nah, don't worry about it. Don't worry about that. Spencer: Half second. Yeah. As the ball like touches the rim as like it stops instead of going all the way through. Yeah. Michael: Yeah, nope, finger slipped. Spencer: Yep. All right. Game day. Ohio State at Texas. Texas is a one and a half point favorite home, six thirty kick, ABC. Michael: sorry, I was banging Spencer: Zatio Michael: my chest. I was banging my chest like McConaughey does in Wolf of Wall Street, but I can't remember what what he was humming. Spencer: I thought you were singing like the Ohio State fight song or something. Michael: No, I d I as soon as I started doing that I thought I don't know what I'm what I'm humming. But I do not want to hum the eyes of Texas are upon you on a Texas Tech podcast. That's not I I don't have any stake in this. I will be watching some of it here and there. Obviously it's during the middle of the Texas Tech game, but I will have eyes on it somehow because it's a it's a big one. It's a doozy, as they would say. Whether we want to admit it or not. Then if if you are a glutton for punishment andor really wanting to figure out who the Sam Houston Bearcats are, Tulsa, who just manhandled Oklahoma State, will be headed to Sam Houston at six PM on ESPN plus. Spencer: That's a really lame song. Michael: So you you may be able to try to get that Between between Sam Houston and Texas and Texas Tech, you've got a lot of a lot of Texas football you can be watching in that six to ten PM time slot. Spencer: Does Tulsa cover and beat Sam Houston by more points than they beat Oklahoma State? Michael: I'm gonna say I I c I can't say both. gonna say no. Wait. Spencer: Well yes, they they that that that's not that those weren't mutually exclusive. They can cover and beat Tim Houston by more points. Michael: What was that score? yeah, it was exactly they beat him by fourteen. Spencer: It's fourteen, yeah. Michael: Or even funnier, what if Sam Houston does the same thing? And beats Tulsa by fourteen. Spencer: Then we would say Sam Houston's a four touchdown favorite over Oklahoma State. And there's no way you can convince me otherwise. Michael: Transitive property. It's it's it's as clear as day, folks. Spencer: All right, well there's week two. Michael, you you took in you've got some Reddit or soccer updates for us. The other football, Michael: Do quick Spencer: the other footy. Michael: quick soccer update. We've had two games since we last recorded. The Red Raiders went one zero and one in those games. The first game was Thursday night at SMU. We've been talking a little bit about SMU lately. SMU's four, one, and two on the season, and Texas Tech came in with the announcers having a little little bit of fun. Had some had some bits going. I don't think they were really treating them as bits. They were treating them as law. But kind of reminds me when the gambling gouchels were really piling on Baylor for not having won in Lubbock since 2007 or whatever that was. Or I don't even know when it was, but and then it intentionally leaving out the fact that they have not played in Lubbock since at least 2007. And I think it was in the nineties. The nineties might have been the last time they won in Lubbock. So that was fun. That was a fun couple weeks on the old Twitter machine. But these guys apparently enjoyed that sort of discourse and Spencer: Mm. Michael: and started out by saying, Texas Tech has never won in Dallas. And that that got mentioned quite a few times during the broadcast. So of course it made me look into it. Coming into last Thursday's game, Texas Tech had played one, two, three. Three games versus SMU in Dallas in its entire hundred-plus year history. And those Spencer: Yeah. Michael: three games were in 2007, 2003, and 1995, back when the Super Nintendo came out. Most of the players, if you do the math, were either still crawling or waiting to be born the last time that Tech played at SMU in 2007. So, okay, sure. Texas Tech has never won in Dallas in the three times they've played them in the last 31 years. All right, fair enough. Then they went a step further. Texas Tech has never scored in Dallas until this week. But this this one does sting a little bit because No, they hadn't. So in the 95 game, Tech lost 0-3. 2003 game they lost zero to two, but the two thousand seven game ended in a tie. A zero zero tie that actually went into double overtime. So SMU didn't even score in their last win or their last match against Texas Tech in Dallas either. Neither of them did. So they did have us there, but I kind of enjoyed that. and it also bothered me. So Texas Tech did Go to SMU on Thursday. Ended with a one-one draw. Story Sexton put TTU on the board in about the 39th minute, I think, and had an assist by Alana Harry. But then SMU nailed the equalizer in the 73rd minute. So pretty late in the game. Tech was feeling pretty good, but man, SMU just turned up the heat in that second half and had 17 total shots. But A lot of those came in the second half, whereas Tech really slowed down. I think they were kind of changing their they were up one zero and possibly changing their mentality a little bit, which wasn't great. So Tech had twelve total shots on the game, but ten of those were in the first half. They really were not able to get much going in the second half offensively. Now Sunday versus San Diego State. I'll admit I didn't watch any of this one, but Tech did get a win their first win in three or four games. They've had a lot of draws lately. So they beat San Diego State 2 1. Eleanor Hayes had an assist to Kylie Barr in the thirteenth minute and then Shrajewski came through with another goal. I don't know how many that makes for her this year. Probably four or five in the eighteenth minute. San Diego State didn't end up s scoring until A penalty kick attempt in the 71st minute got them their standalone goal. So again, Texas Tech Soccer. Three zero and three so far on the season. They have one last game this Friday versus Kent State before they start Big Twelve play. So Friday if you're in Lubbock, seven PM at the John Walker Soccer Complex. If not, it is on ESPN plus. Kent State is one, three and two. So maybe not a super tough matchup. We'll see. Then off almost a full week until next Thursday, the seventeenth, in Orlando at UCF, who is four and one right now. And they will play that game at six o'clock on ESPN Plus and get Big Twelve play kicked off before hosting Cincy the following week on the twenty fourth. Spencer: All right. Lots have been made about the attendance in the crowds out there at John Walker, the John Walker complex. So if you haven't yet, it may be more and more increasingly difficult to take in a red near soccer match. Excuse me. All right, let's wrap this up. Mike with what do we learn? let me go first, real quick. Michael: Okay. Spencer: And I don't I don't want to like I don't want to rain on anybody's parade. I'm not here to yuck your yum. I'm glad that college football is back. But thus far, two weeks into this season, week zero, week one, I'm realizing that maybe I just missed Texas Tech football. I have put on, I've I've tuned in or tuned in like it's a TV. I gotta turn the tuners or whatever. I've put on a handful of games to be bored enough to change the channel or change the feed within a few minutes. I have not been able to keep a game on that's not been Texas Tech yet. I I just I don't. I don't know. I don't have that same like I will watch any game in any bu I I was like I I I I got nothing. Michael: Maybe it'll come back. Maybe it'll come back to you when d I get it. Spencer: It doesn't have to. I I am I am content watching nothing but Texas Tech football. Michael: I get it to an extent because it part of the issue for me that makes it less enjoyable is okay, so who's who's playing for Oklahoma State this year? Wow. Okay, I don't know any of these guys. Or who's playing for XYZ team? Who's playing for LSU this year? yeah, that's right. yeah. Spencer: The X NFL player, yeah. Michael: There's this, there's that. You know, who's coaching this team? that's right. Yeah, they fired their coach after two seasons or one and a half or whatever it is. And so it does make it just like with everything else via college, particularly basketball, is extremely hard to follow. But I I caught myself feeling slightly the same way. But I'm interested to see if you'll if you'll come back around. Cause I I I did take in a couple other games for sure. and and enjoyed them. I I hated that I fell asleep during the the Louisville Ole Miss game. I was just exhausted because that game was awesome and went right down to a field goal made in the last I don't know if it was the last couple minutes or whatever it was, but I know that Louisville was down two touchdowns at one point. They roared back and tied the thing in the fourth and that was a great game. But There weren't a lot of other ones that I got that excited about that didn't involve Texas Tech. Spencer: Hmm. So maybe I'll I'll go put the highlights on that one on and see what I missed. But yeah, like I said, just yet I haven't I haven't really caught into like I've got to go watch all these games or another game that's not Texas Tech. So we'll see. Michael: You'll you'll get there. It and this kinda goes into to my what we learned. Last year may have been my most enjoyable NFL season. Just as a just a f a fan picture me as Rob Lowe with the NFL logo shield hat. Yes, I root for the Cowboys. Yes I root for the Chiefs, but it it doesn't really affect my day if if the Cowboys go seven and nine. Or actually I guess it'd be sev seven and ten Spencer: You're not a real fan, Michael. Michael: now. Yeah, it's just kinda alright, well that's that's what they do. The the Chiefs, yeah, I would get a little bit wrapped up in their success in the playoffs, but they got out of the out of contention so early last year that I really got to just kind of enjoy myself and enjoy the rest of the games. So what I learned basically, the NFL starts Wednesday this week. Spencer: Hm. That's soon. That's tomorrow. Michael: That's tomorrow. And I had no idea it was that soon. I've I've gotten used to them starting on Thursdays. And then I I finally looked at it yesterday and I was late to my own fantasy football draft on Monday night, so this all sounds about right. So what I learned was the NFL starts Wednesday, and they will have New England at Seattle, 7.20 p.m. on NBC, Wednesday the 9th. And then Thursday, very interesting, at least to me, Thursday, September 10th, San Francisco will place will play the Rams. And this will be on 7:35 p.m. on Netflix, which is interesting enough. But it'll be in Melbourne, Australia, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Spencer: So would that tend to be Friday morning for them or is it gonna be on Michael: Yes. Spencer: a delay? It's not actually live. Michael: No, I think it's live. I I was looking at that. It's a I think it's a plus fifteen hour. So I think it'll basically be like an eleven AM or or Spencer: Friday morning. Michael: twelve PM kick on Friday. Yes. Wild to me. Spencer: Hm. Michael: So all that to say. Wherever you're listening to this podcast, set your fantasy your Final Fantasy the Final Fantasy. my gosh, I actually wrote that. Set your fantasy football rosters now. Final fantasy. Spencer: Lineups, lock in. Michael: Set them now. Wherever you are, wherever you're hearing this, pull over. Pull over, pull out the phone, get the apps, because there's probably an NFL game that is already played or is about to be played on the side of the world where the toilet flows in the other direction. And it's a different day. Spencer: Be safe while you do it. Michael: It's a different day there. Yeah, yeah. Pull over. Pull over far off the road. Flashers on. Unless you're on twenty between like Midland and Odessa, just don't don't ever pull over there. Just go till Monahan's and or go until Trent and then pull over. Spencer: That'll do it first in the twenty third personal podcast. Michael: Yeah. Spencer: My favorite thing about Trent, the high score right there off of twenty or eighty, I remember which one it is. It says Trent, home of the gorillas. Michael: Gorillas. Spencer: All right, that'll do it for us. Getting you ready for the Texas Tech Oregon State kickoff on Saturday night. We'll be back then for instant reaction from Michael. I'm Spencer. We'll catch you guys next time.
