FiFi: Alright, lights on. We're good to go. And that's the absolute last time that I tried to feed a seagull from my own mouth. But anyways, we'll just it's it's happened a couple of times, but we're we're not gonna go there. SCUD: W the last time. So you've done this more than once? papiplanes: ⁓ yeah. SCUD: No, we should absolutely go there. Graywo1f: See, I I do that with bald eagles up in Alaska all the time. FiFi: ⁓ yeah. SCUD: Yeah, but that's that's something to be proud of. Siegel? FiFi: Yeah. It's it's funny. It it's it's funny seeing Jimmy here and he's not I th I thought you were still in North Carolina, but Graywo1f: Hey, w I I just went to ⁓ Best Buy and ⁓ I made it happen and ⁓ I I got my Heapbler hat with me. Grey Wolf gave me the Heapler hat. I mean, big shout out to ⁓ to Heap Blur at the expo. Can't wait to talk about it next episode. We're gonna go b deep dive into into the expo and and everything that we ⁓ that we discovered there and all the people we met and we're excited about it. FiFi: Looking. Yeah, we're looking forward to that, Jimmy. SCUD: Jimmy, would you say that Grey Wolf is one of your favorite people? Graywo1f: I would say he's probably right up there with one of my all time, all time favorites, absolutely. Right right behind right behind Iron Mike though. I mean when when we meet Iron Mike, there's gonna be some there's gonna be some sparks, okay? So just stand back. Just stand back. SCUD: That's FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: Yeah. SCUD: Can you can you do us a favor and lean in and give us a hey iron mic wink wink at the camera? Graywo1f: Hey Iron Mike. ⁓ hey, hey, okay, wink wink. Can you give us give us a little bit of ⁓ of B U behind scenes action? Wink wink. FiFi: Ha ha. SCUD: Welcome to High Ooligans, everybody. We're back. It's it feels like it's been forever since we recorded an episode and it few weeks from the expo, which we will not talk a lot about today because we have a whole episode coming on that. I'm Scud. As always we've got Fifi and we've got Jimmy Chaos. And then we've got our guest. Whoa. Where did Grey Wolf? Where did Grey Wolf come from? FiFi: We've been busy. Where'd Jimmy go? Yeah. papiplanes: He vanished. Graywo1f: Sorry I can't do that beard anymore. I did my best Jimmy I could. I give up that beard man. Yeah. That's true. FiFi: You get You get you get the wink week down, that was pretty good. I knew something was up because I didn't see the podcasting couch in the background. So papiplanes: It was pretty good. SCUD: Surprise everybody, surprise. That was perfect. That's perfect. No, we've got we've got Grey Wolf back as always, ⁓ filling in or just showing up, randomly walking in the studio whenever he wants. And then ⁓ and then we've got, as you guys can can see if you're watching on YouTube, we've got Poppy Plains with us. We'll introduce him in just a moment. First, thank you to ⁓ one, thank you to our sponsor, Fox Remanaged Solutions, for backing us for the last almost year and a half, and our partners, Eagle Dynamics, Heat Blur, Granelli Designs. FiFi: Yeah. SCUD: Pimax, wing control. Wing control. They're well, they're not partnered with us, they're partnered with Fifi. And we just we just tag along. FiFi: Yep, keep going. ⁓ th th they they're partner with all of us. They they I don't know they're listen, y you guys are like the nicest people ever. Yeah. Graywo1f: ⁓ Fifi. Yes. SCUD: more more about that on the next episode. More about that on the next episode. And then ⁓ and then our newest ⁓ flight lead Patreon member, Rezna. Thanks for thanks for joining the Patreon. If you ⁓ if you guys go on, hit up our Patreon and ⁓ we'll we'll recognize you on the show. And we have merch. We didn't mean to be matching, but Graywo1f: Yes. Okay. FiFi: And merch. Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. papiplanes: Urge. FiFi: Yeah, we it's the only shirt I have though. Like this is the test shirt and I just never bought any other shirts after that because I'm cheap. So ⁓ I'm just secure. Yeah, not poor, cheap. 'Cause I did upgrade the first class on the way back. ⁓ yeah. ⁓ all the patches that I was supposed to save for everybody that I ended up handing out because I got so excited at the at the expo, so now we have to order more patches so I can actually give them to people that we owe patches to? Yeah. SCUD: Not poor, cheap. We get the patches. Graywo1f: Ha ha papiplanes: I got my patches. Yep. SCUD: All right. So this episode, ⁓ the I love when you call me big Poppy Planes. We've got Poppy Planes. If you guys are not familiar, you you will be shortly. ⁓ you've probably seen his content online. ⁓ I'm I'll let him tell us about it. But first off, Poppy Plains, thanks for being here. Tell us about yourself. Let the listeners know who you are. papiplanes: Yeah, well glad to be here. Thanks for having me guys. ⁓ hey everyone watching. I'm Poppy Plains and let's see, I started out making content on TikTok ⁓ for flight simulators over the last three years, and since then it has just been ⁓ one step ahead of the next and we've been ⁓ building an F-18 cockpit. So you can catch the videos there on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok. ⁓ but I love all things flight simulation. I'm a big DCS fan, and you'll normally catch me flying the Hornet or the Huey. ⁓ And ⁓ yeah, so that's a little bit about me, but we'll I'm sure we'll learn more as the show goes on. SCUD: We will learn more. Graywo1f: There Naz. FiFi: Yep. It's finally nice to have somebody in here that has a better has a has a better cockpit setup than Scud. So now I don't have to listen to Scud talk about his full motion rig. SCUD: Right. My yeah, he he yeah, sure. My mine's mine's mine's all right. It's and Fifi says that as as wind control continues to funnel parts to him nonstop. So no, no. FiFi: It's true. It's true. That that review's coming soon. That review is coming soon. I'm gonna do that this weekend as well. So I've got a lot of stuff. papiplanes: Wait to see it. SCUD: So much new content. Well, Poppy, I'm gonna just call you Poppy. you said you said you're building a hornycock bit, but I think to those who are the the uninitiated, they might think like, okay, like ⁓ a wind control panel and ⁓ you know, some some off the off-the-shelf sim gaming stuff. And that's not that's not what we're talking about here, is it? papiplanes: Perfect. Graywo1f: Mr. Plains. papiplanes: Yes. Well, that is where it began. ⁓ I started out with the Monster Tech Aluminum Rig and I had the full wing wing set up. I was using a VP Force Rhino stick, big fan of that one. Supertors throttle, no longer sold, no longer made. ⁓ and I was flying that for a few years, and I always wanted to do open hornet, which those not familiar, it's an open source ⁓ community building the F eighteen. ⁓ Great project, lots of it it's like a full engineering masterpiece. Like you got professionals from every field ⁓ in that Discord contributing to make an incredible pit. ⁓ and I landed up getting one of the frames. One of the members was selling it, so I picked it up. ⁓ that was about six months ago. And we started working on that, but then that's when the next phase of the project began. and I started acquiring real parts. So the vision shifted from I'm gonna build a replica cockpit. I'm gonna try to use as many real parts as possible. So that's where we are in the current progress of the cockpit is ⁓ acquiring parts and getting them to work with DCS. FiFi: Your wife is a saint for for allowing you for like Yeah. papiplanes: She is. She is. Yeah. SCUD: I papiplanes: Yeah. Yeah. Well. SCUD: I didn't know that this has only been six months that that you've been doing. papiplanes: Yeah, yeah. It it is SCUD: This portion, the real papiplanes: Yeah, it is snowballed ⁓ from the videos. ⁓ so I got my first part, I started posting videos about that, and then out of the woodworks come all the people in the comments saying, Hey, I got this. Are you interested? They wanted to help out, they wanted to pitch in and it it's just been a snowball effect, so it's been great. ⁓ and it's like a full time job outside of work. I'm always networking, I'm always looking for these parts. ⁓ I live and breathe them. So it's it's a hobby in and of itself, just finding them and then getting them to work. SCUD: Mm. FiFi: Super cool. papiplanes: is the second phase. SCUD: ⁓ I could only imagine. I have I don't remember how long back, but I I stumbled upon one of your videos on TikTok and I was blown away. ⁓ and then yeah, obviously follow and watch the progress. And then we're getting ready to go to Sim Gaming Expo in September and talking to George, just running it. And George mentioned that you were gonna be at Sim Gaming Expo. And so that's when I I hit you up on TikTok. papiplanes: That's right. Graywo1f: With the whole thing? papiplanes: ⁓ I wish, I wish. That'd be a beast to transport. SCUD: Yeah, that's so then I hit you up on on TikTok and just ⁓ mention we're gonna be there as well. I didn't know you were gonna be at Flight Sim Expo. So we're just kind of hanging out doing our thing and and and this day he just like walks up, kind of like pops right in between us all, and he's like, hey. Like, we're like, hey, and he's like, I'm so and so, and we're like, ⁓ you're that guy. FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: Okay, yep. FiFi: Yeah. Yeah. I can't tell you how many fights I almost got in because people were coming up and like staring at the badge. Graywo1f: Ha ha. FiFi: And like like favorite, like favorite came up, like because he was there out of the community. And I was saving this for like a for the other episode, but now I gotta say it. Favorite came up and he was just like s death staring me down and like the badge and then staring at me. And I was like starting to look back at him like, Am I about to fight this guy in the middle of the flights in Xbox floor? And then he's like, I know who you are, and like pokes me in the chest, pointing at my name. And I was like, ⁓ we're about to freaking fight. So I'm like, I'm like, like, I'm like getting re I'm like hyping myself up, getting ready to fight this guy. And then he goes, What's up? And then it like he shows his badge and I'm like, ⁓ it's favorite, like this guy. Yeah. So yeah. ⁓ SCUD: Yeah. Graywo1f: He didn't even he he didn't even introduce himself to me. I'm gonna go. papiplanes: I mean, it's crazy. You have all these people who don't really know what each other look like, they're never met and you're just in a big room together, so it was fun. FiFi: Yeah, that was pretty that was pretty wild. SCUD: Yeah, there was a lot of that. All right, so go ahead. Graywo1f: So you got you s you started getting some parts, you know, yeah, sent your way. and and just how many how many parts did you end up ⁓ getting together? As well as I'm c I'm curious on I'm not a big TikTok user, so I apologize. You know, how what what kind of views are you are you getting with with the project and and ⁓ how are you even able to make these real parts interact with the computer to be seen? papiplanes: Yeah. Okay, yeah, a lot there. So star yeah. Yeah, where where did I start from? Yeah, so my first video posting about these was actually on YouTube. ⁓ I got I I bought just a like a table, literally. It was a table of parts, and ⁓ I was talking to the seller and I said I'll just take ⁓ all. ⁓ there's some good stuff in there, some stuff I didn't really want, but it turned out to be worth it. I got that and that's when I made my first YouTube video ⁓ about SCUD: He's like there where do I start? A lot to unpack. Graywo1f: Yeah, I'm like papiplanes: The project. I just kind of showed 10 different parts. ⁓ it went a little something like this. Like this is the APU panel from the F-18. And I just go through those 10 and kind of talk about them. ⁓ and that did like pretty well on YouTube. But I found sharing more in-depth history about these parts ⁓ in short format got really good, like like people resonated with it. Either it's the history, ⁓ it's the engineering. ⁓ there there's a lot of that goes into these panels and just it's stuff you don't normally get to see. ⁓ And so sharing it in like a responsible manner ⁓ and just just letting the community enjoy it is is what I like the most. And the comments and views have been great. ⁓ a lot of people are ⁓ they're they're excited, they're like, How do you even get this? They want to start their own project, they want to s build an F16, and I you know I get messages all the time like I wanna build an F4 cockpit, where do I start? ⁓ and it's really fun seeing people reach out ⁓ and be excited about about like this niche of a niche of a niche. ⁓ Like it's my whole life, so when people message me about it, I'm like, let's chat. It's it's always fun. ⁓ and the views have been great. Like I'll like I'll be shocked. ⁓ I post a video, half a million people ⁓ watch it. My video about the gear lever did four million views. I never would have thought like a lever could could could get views like that. So ⁓ it it it's been just a tidal wave this last few months of of of parts and just trying to show ⁓ off. SCUD: Mm-hmm. Graywo1f: Wow, that's impressive. SCUD: So you said it you got your first part, right? And now that was that the table of ten? Was that the first purchase? So so amongst the table of ten, what is what do you consider the first part? Graywo1f: Awesome. papiplanes: Yeah, yeah, it was that one, yeah. ⁓ in that was like so wait, I have a feed here, was the grip assembly and I was like, I have to add that. ⁓ things like the attitude indicator were in there. ⁓ the AOA or sorry, ⁓ the lock shoot light. So just a bunch of little goodies sprinkled among things like remove before flight tags or knobs or you know, spare incomplete panels, but there was some g some some golds spread throughout that table. So that's what made me excited. I was like, ⁓ I will take it, please. SCUD: ⁓ shit. papiplanes: ⁓ and then that that really kicked the fire. I was like, Are you kidding me? Like these things are out here. ⁓ and that that is when the hunt began. SCUD: Yeah. FiFi: You you've gotta have some sort of crazy Excel spreadsheet of all the parts that you like you like you was are you s like I can imagine like half of your time is just inventorying everything that you do have. Yeah. SCUD: Mm. papiplanes: Yep. Yeah. About about every two weeks I'll go through and just and just try to keep it current. But I'll track ⁓ the parts, ⁓ you know, where they came from, any info I get about how hard it'll be to integrate, and I kinda chunk ⁓ into these groups of ⁓ this one I definitely understand. It'll be pretty easy. And then I have some where it's a black box, it'll take ⁓ months to figure out. So yeah, but that that spreadsheet, I live by it. SCUD: You you said that you were surprised that going in depth on each panel or part or switch was getting the reception. But I'm I'm not. I I maybe I I would be at six months ago, but with content we've made, when we like dive deep into the nerdy stuff, and I'm like, nobody's gonna like this nerdy stuff. This is like way, way too in the minutiae. That it does really well. It just shows there's a hunger for people to like, they want to know how it works, not just papiplanes: Mm-hmm. It does, yeah. SCUD: That you have it and that it works, but you know, like nobody gets to see behind the panel and see what what's going on inside. papiplanes: Absolutely. Yeah. And I think my favorite part to that point is like putting your mind in the designers 40 years ago, like the design choices they made and ergonomics, maintainability. Like an example is ⁓ these bulbs that you see on a lot of these switches. ⁓ of course it's masking, they they pull out from the front. So you can hot swap the bulbs. And it's all these little details that you never really get to realize. And it's really fun discovering those and just drilling in. SCUD: Mm-hmm. Yeah. FiFi: I like how he's just casually grabbing Hornet cockpit parts and just like show them. It's it's super cool. Yeah, it's super, super prepared. So like obviously it's just not the parts that like the face value of what we see. Like you're you obviously have to get some stuff behind it to because you also have to figure out how to integrate it into DCS somehow, because that's what you're building the the cockpit for. So like that's the interesting part because like a lot of the stuff I remember you were talking to us about it at SCUD: Yeah, he's just He's prepared. He's prepared. papiplanes: ⁓ Yeah. Yes. FiFi: at the expo and you're like, yeah, because you there's some stuff that it's like a Rio stat or like it's a it's like a pedostatic, you know, and it uses air pressure, uses this, and it doesn't just use like, you know, zeros and ones, kind of like electrical codes. So like how has that been figuring that stuff out? Like messing with that? And you're probably the reason why Taiwan is producing so many chips right now. Like if we're for everybody complaining about for everybody complaining about graphics card prices, it's Poppy Planes' fault now at this point with all this chip. Graywo1f: Mm. papiplanes: Yeah, so I Maybe, I don't know. SCUD: Ha ha ha. papiplanes: Well, to the shock of everyone I tell, I currently don't have a hot task and I don't have a way to play DCS because I'm so focused on these parts ⁓ in like the future mission. So I don't even have have a GPU to to to play on. But I I will say a I do not have a degree in electrical engineering. I it's not what I studied. I did computer science. ⁓ and so this is all a new area to me. ⁓ I'm very green in it. ⁓ And so a lot of my time involves just learning the basics to to try to know what I don't know yet. And an example of that is ⁓ for example, like a microcontroller, this probably won't come through. ⁓ I have no idea how how they worked a few months ago, but I've been learning them because they're they're so important when you have like these plugs, which are just a bunch of pins. I don't know, there's probably fifty there. And it's like, how do you take this box with all these switches? This is the ⁓ Fs or the the FCS panel, by the way. ⁓ and how do you like get this button click to go into the game? and I think that's where the fun of it comes from is I'll spend hours just pulling apart these panels and trying to see what each pin does. And one of the hard parts is they're all potted in this like epoxy, or they're not epoxy, the comments corrected me. It's called RTV or potting. ⁓ and you can see it here. All this like white stuff just in front of every single switch. So normally you just take a multimeter and be like, ⁓ which one's positive, which which one's negative? But no, you gotta like pick it off with a dental pick or you gotta get like a special probe for a multimeter to to jam into the wire. ⁓ but yeah, e each one I get a page and a multimeter and my headlamp and I call it tinkering. And I'll stay a hours just doing this. But the end goal is so I can understand what these rear ports do. Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. Mm-hmm. papiplanes: ⁓ ultimately to translate them to something modern like a microcontroller where you run DCS bios just like many other home cockpit builders run. So that part is the same as what a lot of other people are doing. It's just instead of using ⁓ you know replica panels, ⁓ they just happen to be from the jet. SCUD: That's incredible. I I would do the same. If if I landed on a a hornet part, I would be ripping that thing apart just to see what what was inside and how it worked. But but then like when I take something apart, the putting it back together phase doesn't always work outright. Like I'll take 10 screws out, I'll put it back together and have one screw left over. And I'm like, ⁓ shit. FiFi: Yeah. Graywo1f: Yeah. papiplanes: You're not alone. I ⁓ I have the same pile of screws of ⁓ I wonder where that went. But I ⁓ I always try to document photos and videos, ⁓ especially like the before I even touch it, because that that really helps putting it back together. And again, like these were made to be maintainable and repairable. ⁓ and I like I've never worked on aircraft or cars or anything mechanical, but certain things like the fasteners that hold them to the Zeus Rails. They don't back out. So you undo ⁓ and and they they don't go anywhere because when you're in a aircraft at night and you're and you're messing with them, you d you don't want to risk dropping them. So a lot of ⁓ intentional choices have gone into that. So you when you pull it apart, it makes sense on how to put it back together most times. Graywo1f: Other captured. Whi which part have you spent the most time on as far as figuring out, you know, what does what? papiplanes: ⁓ okay, probably probably my first one or this one. So the first one I'll talk about, it's it is out in the garage, but it's the standby attitude indicator. And what Phoebe was talking about earlier is you have these things that require external forces like gyroscopes, which need motion or pedostatic. I've been able to find the replica version. So the the ones used in ground trainers that they would have actually trained with. So they don't require that. They they use just Graywo1f: Yeah. Nice. papiplanes: low voltage ⁓ signals. And so that one was really fun to figure out. ⁓ I thought there'd be some crazy requirements to interface it. And it was my first part, so I knew nothing. I was very timid. I didn't want to break anything. ⁓ I don't think I put power to it for a few months. ⁓ and so that one probably took the longest just to build confidence working with them. But this one has been like my white whale. ⁓ I say that because it's relatively simple. This is the ⁓ caution ⁓ yeah the caution warning panel. ⁓ Graywo1f: Ennunciator. papiplanes: And inside there are a few P C Bs that control they're just relays, they control which lights come on and off. ⁓ but it's been really fun trying to figure out the test mode and trying to get all that functionality coming back. I don't just want to gut it and throw in some LEDs behind it. ⁓ I really wanna like understand them and and showcase their original ⁓ function. Cause I that stuff is so cool to me. Like just seeing how they they get all that to work. ⁓ but this one I think I probably spent like a month on just just working on it. ⁓ Trying to sketch it out. Graywo1f: So you need you need three more of those so you can so you can break one. papiplanes: Yeah, right. Yeah. SCUD: Yeah. FiFi: Yeah. I don't even want to think about the cost of of all finding all these parts and then like and I I I know we're we're not gonna get into like how you find these parts and who you talk to and stuff like that 'cause that's that's th there's a whole lot of magic re that goes on in that, but that's pretty wild. Like SCUD: We we did ask him when we first met him too. ⁓ each of us like as we met him had our own like like where'd you get the parts? And it was always some some like facetious bullshit answer. And we're we we were like, all right, cool. We're not gonna find that out. FiFi: Yeah, what I we're not gonna Yeah. 'Cause there's there's there's laws. 'Cause you have to follow some sort 'cause there's some laws that you have to follow, right? About like showing too much or not showing enough when it comes to the parts. papiplanes: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I've tried to do my my due dil due diligence in what is appropriate to show online or not. ⁓ obviously anything that you can see from the front, ⁓ I feel comfortable sharing with the viewers because you can see ⁓ in cockpits, museums. ⁓ but when when people ask about nitty-gritty details, I just there's no need to explore that. that's not the purpose of this channel. It's just to showcase cool engineering and restoring the cockpit ⁓ But yeah, like it's definitely at the forefront of the videos. Like I'll I'll watch ⁓ and make sure that there's nothing that could be misconstrued or or taken ⁓ poorly from like watching the video. ⁓ but yeah, like it's it's definitely iffy, you know? ⁓ and I I always try to do right by what I show. SCUD: I remember the episode of the Attitude Indicator, which I didn't know was the first part. And it's one thing, like you hold up the light panel at your white well. ⁓ but would l the see in the inside of the attitude indicator, it looks so delicate. Like so many little moving parts. It th yeah. papiplanes: Okay. Crazy, yeah. It's like a watch. Yeah. I mean, it's the same with all the ⁓ gauges I've been most fascinated by 'cause you think like most of them are just stepper motors, like most modern replicas. But seeing the inside of these, they're geared, they're ⁓ you know, very special electronics made just for that gauge. And it it's really cool seeing all the thought. Like you you gotta think that thing probably costs twenty, fifty grand when it was originally contracted ⁓ to be used in. Graywo1f: Mm. papiplanes: Yeah, it just blows my mind looking at the inside of these. SCUD: Yeah. The other one that I saw that ⁓ I remember thinking, How are you gonna make this work? And I'm sure you've got a plan for it was the rudder pedals. Cause it's all been it's all like here's here's an attitude indicator, here's a light panel, here's a here's a FCS panel, and then all of a sudden one of his episodes, it's he pulls this giant chunk of metal up and he's like, Here's the entire rudder pedal assembly from the F eighteen Hornet. papiplanes: Yeah. Graywo1f: Yeah. papiplanes: Okay, so I when I got that one, that was my first question too. So I went splunking. And it turns out the position measuring is inside the assembly. It uses a L V D T, which is a fancy word of saying it measures the position of something going left or right. So ⁓ there and when I opened it up, I found four of them. And if you look at the manual, it makes sense because there are four ⁓ four flight computers in the Hornet. So That was a cool little like nod of taking the manual and then seeing it ⁓ there. But yeah, so the feel, the stiffness of moving the rudder is built into it, but the brakes are gonna be the hard challenge there because they probably in real life go to some brake piston or some some hydraulic system. And they're just totally loosey goosey. ⁓ so I'll I'll have to add some sort of like spring or load sensor. The comment like I love posting about it and then reading the comments because people have such good ideas that I I I SCUD: That's what I was gonna ask. Was it load cell? papiplanes: I just don't think of and and I'll say it and they will ⁓ correct me politely or or or not. ⁓ and share their idea and I always always love it. So yeah, that one will be interesting. Graywo1f: Yeah. FiFi: It's it's like that it's like that clip of Elon Musk when he's talking to the reporter about like having a problem with like the cold gas with the rocket with the rocket motor and then he figures it out right there on the spot. Yeah. I can imagine that's probably what a lot of that's like. Yeah. papiplanes: Yeah, he's like, whoa. Yeah, yeah. SCUD: Yeah. I was gonna ask on that. I was gonna ask if you were thinking potentiometers or load cell sensors, but yeah. papiplanes: Yeah, I think ⁓ I think load cell for brakes is is probably the move and then add some artificial force so it feels like you're you really have to step on it. ⁓ FiFi: So so far, what's been like oops sorry, no go ahead, Sky. SCUD: I I was just gonna say I think every ⁓ race car sim gamer right now is like screaming at the screen because that's that's the that's it now for racing pedals is load cell sensors, spring load cell sensors for brake feel. papiplanes: Yeah. It's funny you mentioned that. I did have a lot of sim racers ⁓ mentioning that that's how pedals work in that world, which ⁓ I don't I don't do sim racing. I've tried it, I got a wheel and pedal, I did the drifting for a weekend, but it was just too hard to swap it out with the flights and stuff, so yeah. SCUD: Mm-hmm. FiFi: Yeah. So so what what has been like so far, because obviously you're not you're not you're still grabbing stuff and acquiring things. So far, what's been the hardest part for you to get a hold of? SCUD: Yeah. Go ahead, Fifi, sorry. papiplanes: ⁓ I would say be the gear lever. ⁓ I I that was one I never thought I would ever get or find. ⁓ I've seen a few around, you know, ⁓ other places, but it's just such a like a nostalgic item. ⁓ people it's like it's something people don't really want to let go of. So ⁓ I kind of marked that one off as I'm gonna start building my replica. And it's funny that when you stop when you stop looking is often when you find it. I think that can be said a lot about the things in life. and yeah, I I was on vacation. ⁓ I I told my wife, No, no more plain stuff, you know, I'm gonna I'm gonna enjoy the trip. And I got I got a message and I was like, Okay, I have to answer this because he's he's talking to the gear lever. So ⁓ but yeah, it it they they all surface pretty similarly. ⁓ it's just somebody finds me and they're like, You have a good mission. I like what you're doing. This part will be better served there than sitting in a closet. So Graywo1f: Yeah. SCUD: Dm. Graywo1f: Nice. How do you ⁓ figure out like how much voltage something even needs? FiFi: Let's go. papiplanes: ⁓ so like ⁓ things like switches, they they can work off pretty much anything. ⁓ it's it's just a normal switch. The what's cool is about all the face plates all run off five volts. ⁓ a lot of people think five volts? No way. It's twenty, it's it's twenty-four, it's twelve, it's one fifteen. But on the back, ⁓ if you take ⁓ off, they'll say maximum ⁓ five volts, and they say like it'll draw point five amps. So I just have a ⁓ power supply, just adjust it. And I always limit the current in case there's a short. I never want to blow it. ⁓ I'm always very scared of applying power to stuff. I like triple check everything because if I fry it, I think I'd cry. ⁓ things that like and yeah, I think for the most part, there's like the three common. There's five volt for backlighting. ⁓ solenoids are all twenty-eight volts, so things like mag switches here. This is the APU start. It's ⁓ latching, but there's no power there. ⁓ and then ⁓ Graywo1f: Very nice. papiplanes: Motors I found are often twelve volts. ⁓ there's a few things that that'll spin and those are normally just twelve volts. So it's it's all low voltage. Correct. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ the added indicator, a lot of the sim gauges all all run off twelve volts too. Graywo1f: So like the attitude indicator. SCUD: Okay. Wow. You you s you s you talk to this like it's just so like straightforward. He's like, How do you determine? It's like, ⁓ I just read the back of the the the gauge and it tells me exactly how many vaults. FiFi: What's been his life? papiplanes: Yeah. Yeah. FiFi: Yeah, it's been his life for a while. So are you looking forward to like are you I mean obviously you're looking forward into like getting it up and running and actually like you know, doing that stuff. Are you just gonna have like a big projector in your in your sim cave? papiplanes: Well yeah. ⁓ when people ask this in comments, I often say I don't even have time to to think about it. Like I'll be happy with a literal 10-inch screen showing out the window. If everything else is working, I don't care what the outside looks like. ⁓ but yeah, I there's a few solutions. ⁓ I'm really impressed by the Warthog project with his three projector setup. There's a few other ⁓ setups that do it. ⁓ Graywo1f: Ha ha. FiFi: What's the ⁓ Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. FiFi: And like the augmented reality guys too, like do do a lot of really cool stuff. papiplanes: That too. Like mixed reality is getting so much better every year with the masking. ⁓ like I know Vario has some really good ones. ⁓ and then I actually have the PyMex Dream Air here. They sent that for testing. I need to get some videos out on it. ⁓ but yeah, right now it is the last thing on my mind. I'm I'm hoping in a few years mixed reality gets way better by the time the the project's in a more complete state. Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. FiFi: You it's you you're gonna spend like the night you're gonna once it's done, you're gonna spend like two months just mapping everything. Yeah. Like Graywo1f: Yeah. Hopefully you can back up that ⁓ DCS BIOS or whatever it is in in some way. Holy cow. papiplanes: ⁓ yeah yeah. More, more, yeah. FiFi: Yeah, like this week I'm just gonna focus on this left side panel. papiplanes: Right, yeah. Well Yeah, it it it's true. Well, and so to that point, one design goal that I have in mind is ⁓ I'm a software engineer for like work out like outside of the DCS stuff. And one common practice you you do there is you want to make systems independent of each other. They they shouldn't depend on unnecessary things. So the SIM pitch should not even know DCS exists. It should not know what DCS BIOS is, is one of the principles I'm I'm taking with this like early stage. The idea is that I could run it in a standby mode where ⁓ it doesn't even need a computer. It like the logic might be built in. It could take logic from an outside source like MSF or Xplane. and DCS is the main one I'm I'm planning. So that'll be the first one I support. But ⁓ I think it'd be cool to just not be like limited to DCS. I want it to to be its own living, breathing machine that just happens to work with DCS. SCUD: Geez, that's that's I'm not gonna say lofty because you know what you're doing, but that's yeah. My I would just be like right to how do I make this switch map to DCS? And you're like, I'm gonna I'm gonna simplify by making it way more complicated. papiplanes: Yeah. Yeah. Well and that's like half the fun, you know. Like I I view this project is I say it's my life goal, like obviously a family and career and all that, but this is something that feels like worthy of just dedicating time to doing it right. And I r like a lot of people say, for example, with the D D I, they're like, just rip it out and put in an L C D. This thing is a piece of art. I would never take it apart. FiFi: Yeah. Graywo1f: ⁓ my god. SCUD: God damn. Graywo1f: ⁓ jeez. papiplanes: I would first make a replica before I dismantle that. and so yeah, like I I'm keeping those choices intentionally because I don't want to take the shortcut. SCUD: Yeah. In a minute we're gonna say so we're gonna say something in a minute and he's gonna be like well let me roll in this jet engine just FiFi: Yeah. Yeah. papiplanes: Yeah. Graywo1f: Well, I like how I like how every single part he grabs is like three pixels off the side of the screen and it's just like, ⁓ this? ⁓ yeah. I love it. FiFi: It's good. SCUD: It's so cool. It's so cool. papiplanes: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. FiFi: Yeah. Graywo1f: He's he's he's got like one of those magic bags on the side of the screen that he j it's like like a magic hat just reaches in and just you know pulls out something that's like fourteen si times the size of the hat. Yeah. FiFi: Yeah. Just get a floating just off screen from him. so I mean this is this is so this is just so wild. I mean the hard part right now is because we like picked your brain like ruthlessly at Flights of Expo. So now we have to like try to revisit all the questions we had for you there. so like papiplanes: It's like your inventory in like video games, like your Antheptata, yeah. SCUD: Yeah. Mm. FiFi: Geez, like I mean, obviously it's like incredibly expensive to do this and things like that. So it's definitely a hobby. like what eventually it's you're gonna you're gonna complete it. Like, you know, out outside of just parking an actual jet in your driveway. You know, you're you're gonna you're gonna complete it. It's is there like another jet that you would be interested in doing as well, besides just the F-18? papiplanes: Mm-hmm. Ooh, that's a good question. It would have to be the Huey. That's like my my relaxation airplay or aircraft, I should say. I will I'll have a butt kicker going. I I put on like a Vietnam playlist and then I put in headphones so I can hear the chop chop chop chop. ⁓ and I will fly that thing around at Marianas all night long. I love that. ⁓ so I would love to do like a two seater Huey. I always joke that when I have a bad day, my wife's like, Do you want to go teach me how to land the F eight T? And I'm like Graywo1f: Nice. FiFi: Mm-hmm. SCUD: Same. Exactly the same. papiplanes: Yes. Okay, well let's go do that. So so if so if I could take her for a flight of the Huey, you know, a little sunset date. ⁓ yeah, I I really liked the Huey and helicopters, so that would probably be the next one. I I say next, it's very unlikely. FiFi: We need to start a GoFundMe just for you, just just just to upgrade her ring because she is like a saint. papiplanes: Yeah. SCUD: ⁓ yeah, absolutely. I I'm just gonna say too, if my wife is watching, take notes. She's never once been like, ⁓ you wanna go teach me how to land a hoard it? She's usually like, just go down into the basement and go play your games. FiFi: Yeah. This is this is the papiplanes: Yeah. FiFi: But she's also the s she's also the same person that's okay to go try to buy a DeLorean. Yes, Scud Scud buys a DeLorean. papiplanes: Go back, go away, yeah. SCUD: Twice. Twice. papiplanes: ⁓ wow. Twice. SCUD: I got outbid twice. Graywo1f: I can't wait for that High Alpha Hoogans episode. The DeLorean edition. papiplanes: Yeah. SCUD: Yes. Every it's off topic. Everything I buy, no matter what it is, if it's for the sim rig or if it's for the house, if it's a toy, the the first question out of her mouth is, where's it gonna live? Cause we run out of space because I buy all this crap. Where's it gonna live? And if I can't answer that question, I can't buy it. ⁓ and both times I I tried to buy DeLorean, that question never popped up. ⁓ I I tr I I was looking at buying a smaller car than a DeLorean. FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: ⁓ SCUD: One time and she was like, where's it gonna live? Are you gonna clean the garage out and make room for it? But the moment I said, Hey, I I'm gonna bid on a DeLorean, she's like, Okay. She's like right on board. That's like that's my one like clean, go ahead, spend money. I I do wanna say too, I I love that you said that the Huey's your relax module. That is the same for me. And that's like like like FiFi: Okay. Yeah. papiplanes: I love it. ⁓ that's awesome. Graywo1f: That's your that's your h that's your hall pass purchase. FiFi: You hope that's what you said. papiplanes: Okay, good, good. SCUD: When I don't want to do anything combat, I just jump in the Huey and fly around. Berlin is a great map. ⁓ papiplanes: Yep, they're all low low level on on Cold War, yeah. SCUD: Yep. And then ⁓ yeah. And then it's also like after after like a MILSI mission or something, it's my decompress. Like, all right, I need I need like ten, fifteen minutes in the Huey with the butt kicker. Graywo1f: Flying through the factories. FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: Yeah. Yep. My favorite is Marianis Medac two point ⁓ I think. It's on the DCS user files and it's mindless because you just land at this Navy hospital and it says fly this bearing for five miles and pick up a patient who had a heart attack. And it's just like dynamic, so you gotta keep keep doing that over and over. And I love streaming that back when I was I was doing TikToks some more, but yeah, that that is a good mission. SCUD: I'm writing that down right now. papiplanes: Good, good. FiFi: Yeah, yeah. 'Cause there's one that's got like supply where it's like I think it's in the Caucasus map and you have to go way up in the mountains with it and you you never quite make it 'cause it's so high. papiplanes: ⁓ yeah. SCUD: Yeah. Graywo1f: On the other side. Is that the one? FiFi: I can't yeah, I can't yeah, I can't remember what it is. I SCUD: I don't remember what it is, but it's it's yeah, it's a rescue mission. You have to rescue hikers in the some top of some mountain where you don't have the performance and yeah, it's it's it's awful. It's fun. papiplanes: Mm. ⁓ that's cool. FiFi: It's a it's this whole it's this whole thing. ⁓ man. SCUD: Yeah. All right. So we have a question for you. The question. papiplanes: Okay, let's lay it on me. SCUD: All right. Fifi, just let me let me ask the question without interjecting, all right. FiFi: I'm you just you can't be leading people on when you like you can't be leading people on the question. SCUD: I'm not gonna do the the Jimmy thing and leave people on. Who would win in a dog fight? Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in a Mustang or Sean Connery as James Bond in a Spitfire? papiplanes: Okay. I think I'm gonna have to be biased and say ⁓ say say Tom Cruise, obviously. Graywo1f: What is the tally now? I have no idea. We need like a running tally. FiFi: Yes. Yes. SCUD: It's almost a tie now. It's almost a tie. papiplanes: Yeah. Do you get Sean Connery a lot as as the answer or is about fifty fifty? SCUD: We It's getting close to fifty fifty now because the people like you Graywo1f: Yeah. At the start it was like ninety ten. FiFi: It's I i yeah, I felt like I felt like Jimmy and Sked were like secretly paying off everybody coming on just to like give the the Sean Connery Spitfire answer, which is SCUD: Yeah. FiFi: Which is kind of crazy. But anyways, I'll take that. I'm happy with it. I actually do have another question. It came in like the all the chatting and the outline that we were like talking about, like what we want to talk about tonight. And you mentioned something about how you want to do this to like inspire people to go into like STEM and like engineering and stuff like that. And you know, like that would be really cool. Just like you know, high school students if you just need free labor, you know, just to come and like help ⁓ yeah, help sh check that kind of stuff out. 'Cause there's like we've been really lucky enough to meet like a lot of like of the younger generations in through through all this. And they're like incredibly smart. Like like the two twenty the A two twenty guys from Synaptics that are making the A two twenty, like they started when they were like fifteen. papiplanes: Yeah Right, just just bring ⁓ on. Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. papiplanes: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Wow. FiFi: And they're like they're like maybe nineteen twenty now and stuff like that. So I can so is there is there any thing that you're like maybe thinking about doing like of like trying to like invite people in to come see and like get hands on experience with it? 'Cause that'd be cool. papiplanes: Yeah, absolutely. I think this is like a two part answer. So I'll I'll start with part one. And it's kind of a like I'll give you my experience online and then I'll give you my like personal background on on why I think it matters. So I'll often post these videos, ⁓ say it's a simrig or s some part, and the number one comment is normally well, there's a few, but they're all the same. It's buy an airplane, ⁓ get your license, stop wasting money and join the military. And I think that's yeah, like ⁓ that's Obviously what you do if you want to be a pilot. ⁓ I do have my license. ⁓ I got my PPL in college and I intentionally chose to study software engineering. I did not I wanted to go the pilot, right? I was something on my mind. I got my class three. ⁓ I had red-green ⁓ colorblindness, so like 11% of men have it. ⁓ so I could not get a class one. I know there's waivers, ⁓ but between a mix of personal and medical, a lot of people can never fly. So That was like a little hard in college, but my roommate, ⁓ shout out Steven, if you're out there, he got an internship at Northrop Grumman. And he said, You should come join me for the summer. And I was like, What is it on? He's like, B2 Adionic Simulation. And instantly I was like, that's an option? Like, I'm studying software engineering. ⁓ I you're telling me I can go fly a B2 sim. So that was like Graywo1f: ⁓ my god. SCUD: Yeah. papiplanes: what really opened my eyes. And so then after I graduated college, I worked on the F twenty two at Boeing, ⁓ pilot training system. So we would build the full mission trainers, we'd take do the software, and it was just really awesome getting to talk to pilots. They would say, hey, this system isn't working. Can you take a look and see if there's like a bug? And just ha having that loop of like being involved in the community and still, you know, contributing and helping. ⁓ there's so many aspects of it. And I think that it doesn't get enough recognition. ⁓ there's so much that goes into making a jet fly, even in making this panel. Like th there's so many smart people there. So ⁓ I really want to share that with people and like an outcome of this cockpit build, ⁓ a lot. I've been doing a lot of like just reflecting internally. It's like I have these parts and I think the wrong route to go is I'm building an F 18, look at me. And I think a much better use of this like incredible opportunity. This is the long-term vision, but in a trailer, you know, flight suits for the kids, pins, ⁓ a flying map and take it on the road. Go to hospitals, schools, and just there's no good representation of like a authentic cockpit. Like even the United States Navy shows up to some large events and they bring like toys. Like they look like you're flying ⁓ like a plastic joystick and an arcade game. So getting like seeing that early on, I think Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. papiplanes: could be really inspiring to a lot of people and just sharing it. Like I love talking about this and I think it's a great way ⁓ just just to spread the word. So ⁓ and passion speaks and ⁓ you could put me in front of people and I will talk about airplanes all day long. SCUD: It's it's very apparent. Your passion for it is really with with well it's like not just not just the what the project you're working on now and like every time you hold a panel up and you're like this is art and how it works and you know I I love the passion you have for the details, but also like this is a passion project because of what you have studied that hopefully that the end goal of bringing that around and showing it off is not just a look FiFi: It's super cool. papiplanes: Yeah. Yeah. SCUD: Like, if you want to be a pilot, this is what a cockpit looks like. But also for all the the kids out there that don't want to be a pilot, that you're like, okay, and and if you want to build something like this, look what you can do. I think that's awesome. I love it. papiplanes: Yeah, it's doable. Mm-hmm. And just like setting your mind to something, like I have a lot of people say it's impossible. And I like I'm sure I'm being naive and like I will get it to work. But ⁓ if if you if you put your brain to it and you find the right people and you learn the skills, I I really think you can do pretty much anything out there. ⁓ now getting a D D I to work, that that is a no go. That that's never gonna happen. FiFi: Yeah. SCUD: For now. Is it is that the biggest part? FiFi: For now, yeah. Here I am thinking I'm pretty accomplished because papiplanes: Yeah. ⁓ in in terms of size, probably actually the throttle, I think is like two feet tall. ⁓ it's deep. So that that might be up there. I do, yeah, yeah. SCUD: Not the rudder pedals. Graywo1f: Probably the rudders. Yeah. SCUD: I was gonna ask if you had a throttle too. If you were gonna have to go with the Cyber Taurus, the the holy grill, the myth. papiplanes: No, I w I I was able to grab a throttle. So and fun fact, bet you didn't know, the throttle has load sensors on it, so it knows how hard the pilot is pushing on it to override the auto throttle. So it's thirty two pounds. It'll it'll turn off auto throttle. But ⁓ yeah. Graywo1f: ⁓ wow. FiFi: It's an interesting random bar trivia right there. SCUD: Ha ha ha ha. papiplanes: Yeah, yeah. SCUD: All right. I had I had something else I was gonna ask and now I don't remember. ⁓ I d you said you have the throttles and my my mind went to like totally lost track of what I was gonna say. Fifi, do you wanna do guns hot? FiFi: Oops, sorry. papiplanes: Yeah. FiFi: Yeah. What? Ooh, guns hot. Yeah. All right. ⁓ yeah, no, go, go. Graywo1f: Or there's one question before that. Is ⁓ how did you how did you get into DCS? papiplanes: Okay. SCUD: ⁓ go ahead. Go ahead. papiplanes: How do they get into DCS? ⁓ yeah. That's a great question. Okay, ⁓ flashback. I'm like 10 in the in the dining room on the on my parents' computer, ⁓ trying to play X Plane ten, maybe X Plane eleven. ⁓ not happening because ⁓ I'm getting 10 FPS and just kind of wrote it off. I was like, Yeah, this is too complex. I'm I'm never gonna do get playing games on the computer. I was in college ⁓ and I saw a YouTube video. FiFi: ⁓ yeah. SCUD: ⁓ yeah. Yeah, we always want to hear the DCS story. Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. papiplanes: about DCS and I could not believe it existed. I was like, you're telling me all these systems work. You can fly around online multiplayer. So I got a gaming PC just to play it. And the photos I was digging through the archives the other day are so funny. I'm playing with like an X fifty two, ⁓ hot tases are like up here on my desk and I'm just having a time my life. So that was the start of it. I first flew the F 15 C like the low fidelity one ⁓ that pack you buy. Graywo1f: Nice. Mm-hmm. papiplanes: And then the Hornet came out and I remember watching your ⁓ the heapboard trailer for the F fourteen. That that was right around when I started getting more into it. And I remember posting that on my story and my wife's like, like, you you like can't post this stuff. I'm like, it's airplanes, it's cool. Like my friends need to see it. ⁓ so that's what started like social media after that is like an outlet to t to share my excitement for that stuff. But ⁓ yeah, it it all started back mainly in college ⁓ when I got my PC. Graywo1f: Nice. SCUD: The F fourteen is the gateway drug that gets people into DCS. And I love the ⁓ the deck the image of you with the like with the X fifty two, like you're sitting there with the bump on the desk, you're like, it'll never get more real than this. And now he's building an entire F eighteen cockpit out of real parts. FiFi: It's true. It's true. It's it's it's just it's an iconic plane. papiplanes: It is yeah. Yeah. Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. papiplanes: It'll never get more real. FiFi: man. Graywo1f: Yeah. It's it's like it's like when we were all kids and we're like, you know, ⁓ my god, Doom graphics. ⁓ it's kids never gonna get any more better than this and papiplanes: Yeah. FiFi: Okay. SCUD: This is the end, the peak of like computer gaming right here. Graywo1f: Yeah. Soon enough, ⁓ Pappy, Jared Isaacman's gonna just roll up to your house with a whole a whole ass F eighteen. papiplanes: ⁓ that'd be incredible. ⁓ FiFi: Yeah. SCUD: I'm glad you Phoebe asked and you said the Huey is what you want to do next, but I was I was gonna ask the same. I was like, When you're done with this, like there's no way when this is all done, you're gonna be like, All right, well that's move on to some other project in life. Like yeah you know that the moment it's done, you're gonna be you're gonna get all mapped and fly it, then you'll be like, All right, next plane, what's next? I gotta do another one. FiFi: What we do next, yeah. papiplanes: ⁓ I think I'd run out of space in the garage. I mean a warehouse. Yeah. True, yeah. Yeah, easy. SCUD: Especially if you're talking about a Huey. You have to get double of everything for a Huey. FiFi: Yeah. Yeah. Or you could probably find them for pretty cheap, come to think about it, because it's a Huey. And then but then I'll I'll I'll come over and I'll just be sitting there as a door gunner. Like you have to have like like actual reading M1341. Yeah. Just floating your face, yeah. Graywo1f: You just just get a whole Huey fuselage. Put that on a motion rig. SCUD: Ha ha ha. Graywo1f: They are everywhere. Yes. There's people that made ⁓ They've made miniguns. papiplanes: Yeah? And like a fan blowing on you. Yeah. SCUD: It's like it's totally off topic, but I'm gonna ask if you guys this see have you guys seen the the the people that have the the tank, like the multi-crew tank setups in their house where they're like loading like it's like two, you know, like one liter bottles and they're like the bottles are flying back out. FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: Yes. Shells. Graywo1f: Yep. There was some viral videos of some some of those people doing that. It was it was hilarious. FiFi: That'd so cool. So is it is this like a is this like a family project too? Like do do you get any help with like cleaning parts or you know hold hold the wrench? papiplanes: the game my wife and I play is when I get a new part, we'll play which one which switch is like the most satisfying to click. So I have a insane business idea to use mill spec switches as a fidget toys. ⁓ I don't know how ⁓ economical practical it'd be, but th the the click on some of these, ⁓ amazing. So yeah. Yeah. Yeah. SCUD: Right. Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. SCUD: ⁓ Take my money Take my money. Graywo1f: Tra trademark that shit. FiFi: You know what's funny though is like as as as you say that, like I just immediately like if I leave like my my setup out and I don't like put it up, my daughter will come by and like flip the switches on my on my throttle quadrant. Yeah, it's true. papiplanes: Yeah. The the children yearn for good switches, yeah. SCUD: It it the moment you when you held up the ⁓ the APU switch and let it go, that click you gotta do that again you gotta do that again for us. FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: Yeah. Okay, okay, okay. Let's see. Yeah. And then and then this one this is also a mag switch. This is engine crank, so but it'll also yeah. Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. FiFi: Yeah. Yeah. Graywo1f: You could you could absolutely ⁓ you know, a sound engineer in me, ⁓ I'd love to get over there with a ⁓ with one of my microphones. papiplanes: ⁓ yeah, yeah, a microphone. Yeah. ⁓ fun fact, one of my most viral videos was talking about the price of these switches. Does anybody know how much one of these switches costs? The the blue magnetic switches? FiFi: Be like Well I can imagine how much they actually cost the manufacturer versus what Graywo1f: ⁓ well what what time frame? papiplanes: ⁓ buying it today on Mauser or ⁓ Digi Key. Yeah. FiFi: Okay, so the cost of manufactur yeah. I'm thinking no, I think it's gonna be more. Graywo1f: Twelve hundred bucks. papiplanes: Yeah. B like between twelve and like four thousand, depending on which which like model you get 'cause there's there's so many different ones. ⁓ yeah, crazy, crazy. I did not pay that. That'd be insane. That'd be yeah, crazy. SCUD: Mm. FiFi: I because I was like, well, there's the cost of manufacturing and there's like the cost that the government would pay for it. So Graywo1f: Yeah. SCUD: No. papiplanes: This is a slip roof sub the comments on that video are brutal. So I'm sure you're gonna get some people sharing their opinions down here. Yeah. FiFi: ⁓ man. So yeah, so guns hot. So typically we have to we typically we're supposed to do this at the very beginning of the episode, but we're just too excited to talk about this stuff. So basically the it's just one-word answers. All you have to do is give one-word answers, it's just it's just rapid fire and things like that. ⁓ we we just you know, normally Scud comes up with them and then I have to be the one to delivering them. Graywo1f: Guns, guns, guns hot. SCUD: All right, Fifi. Guns hot. papiplanes: All right. Fox third. Okay. SCUD: Yeah, rapid answers. papiplanes: Okay. FiFi: And ⁓ so you can blame Scud. Yeah, it's true. 'Cause I don't even really read before before he when he sends them over to me. So it's like just as much of a shock to me as it is everybody else. So it's like it's like the ⁓ it's like the weekend update from Saturday Night Live where they're like reading the cue cards for each other. That's kinda what happens. So papiplanes: Okay. SCUD: I w well yeah, because usually it's funny watching you laugh at the questions before you answer. Ask papiplanes: Okay. Mm-hmm. Great. Okay. SCUD: I'll be your Michael Che. FiFi: Yeah, so first first question. How many zip ties are too many? papiplanes: ⁓ none. No, wait, wait, wait. FiFi: Would you be surprised if the FBI FBI showed up to search a garage? papiplanes: ⁓ I play the fifth. FiFi: Yeah, that's ooh. Good. All right. Which item so far in the simpit is the biggest diva and why? papiplanes: The warning light indicator. FiFi: Right, yeah, 'cause we went over that. ⁓ how many times have you s how many times have you said this part will be easy and then immediately regretted it? papiplanes: My white whale. Every time. Yeah. FiFi: if your SimPit wrote a Yelp review about you, how many stars would you think you would get? Graywo1f: Yeah. papiplanes: About me. maybe b maybe two. I I don't use it very much. Yeah. Graywo1f: Yeah. FiFi: You know so you know what's crazy? Even after even a so break in break in moment real quick. Even after Flights and Expo and like the weird stuff that we would talk about in the Uber, I still have a five star Uber rating. So I had I had to yeah I had to SCUD: Would not recommend papiplanes: Wow, impressive. SCUD: ⁓ yeah, that's a that's a that's a story for the ⁓ Po show show. FiFi: I had to tip a little bit extra, but I still have a five star Uber rating, so thanks guys. so ⁓ oscilloscopes, sine wave, square wave, or emotional damage? papiplanes: ⁓ I d I I don't know if I understand the question. Yeah, yeah. ⁓ yeah. I I guess I yeah, I do use ⁓ but only just to make sure the lines don't go too high. So yeah. I guess I guess sine wave. Yeah. FiFi: Yeah, I don't know. Yeah. Graywo1f: Must must not have used one, I guess. FiFi: how about how how many of your soldered connections are good and then there's like the occasional like just emotional support blob where you're just like ⁓ forget it. ⁓ Graywo1f: Ha ha. papiplanes: ⁓ all of them. I I'm a terrible solder. and I am not soldering on on these on these panels for a long time. FiFi: That's fair. That's fair, yeah. How ⁓ have any have any of the parts actually showed up smelling like jet A? Like jet fuel? Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. papiplanes: Not Jet A, but they do smell like airplane. If I I I can't describe the smell. They smell ⁓ electronic, they smell mechanical, yeah. SCUD: It has a smell, yeah. Graywo1f: Mm-hmm. FiFi: Well, with that with that question of mind, what's your favorite flavor of electrical smoke? papiplanes: I have not seen Magic Smoke yet. Yeah. Graywo1f: Touch wood, knock knock on wood. I'm knocking on wood for you. FiFi: And then a last question, ⁓ which part of the sim is haunted and why? SCUD: Ooh. ⁓ papiplanes: Hmm. Probably the DDIs or anything more complex than a button. ⁓ yeah. Like th that is a nightmare every time. Yeah. FiFi: Okay. Graywo1f: I've seen things. FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: An example, like a quick tangent, when you open up the D D I it says danger twenty thousand volts, ⁓ because of the C R T inside. Like I don't even want to look at it. yeah. SCUD: Holy yeah. FiFi: Have you actually put power to it yet? And like yeah, you're you're electric. Graywo1f: God, yeah, that would be a C R T. papiplanes: No, no. Yeah. There there's like a hundred pins on the back of that thing. ⁓ and it's probably I don't know, some crazy voltage required. FiFi: Yeah, I can imagine. 'Cause I remember I I remember watching ⁓ actually Mover did a ⁓ Moover from the Mover and Gonky Show did a really cool video of Like, you know, like somebody he did a really cool video of somebody starting up like a DCS Hornet and then him doing his like start up on when he was flying the Hornet. And he was talking about how you can only turn on one at a time because you or you can only turn on one at start up before both engines are running because otherwise the APU will it'll kill the APU and kill kill the generator on one of the motors. So you have to it's 'cause they draw so much power. So papiplanes: Yeah. Graywo1f: Mm. papiplanes: That makes sense. Wow. Very cool. Graywo1f: ⁓ wow. SCUD: Yeah. Interesting. I I I've seen those warning labels. ⁓ granted it hasn't been powered on in so long, I still tear it apart. I'd never put power on it. But there's an antique store near my house that has a ⁓ HUD from an A7 Corsair. But it's not just the HUD, it's the entire like the HUD and the like three foot long box of electronics that went into the nose to run it. Yeah. And but you know, the Graywo1f: Geez. ⁓ cool. papiplanes: Mm. FiFi: Where are you guys finding all this stuff? Like I'm lucky SCUD: The first thought that went through my mind was, I wanna put power on this. But yeah, no, there's there's some warning labels. FiFi: Like I feel lucky when I like find a couch at a thrift store that doesn't have stains on it. Like what are you where are you guys finding? Like, ⁓ yeah, you know, I have I've you I'm building a whole Hornet cockpit and then Scott's like, yeah, there's an A seven Corsair HUD. Like papiplanes: You should go buy that. Yeah. SCUD: Antique stores. I I I I nobody's gonna buy it, so I'm just I let it sit for a while so I can go back and be like, yeah, this was here two years ago. Yeah, let's let's let's get it out, let's get it out of your inventory. But you do find stuff like antique stores. I have ⁓ you can't see it because my chair's in the way, but I have a B fifty two sextant that's ⁓ I found at Antique Store, and then I've got the ⁓ ILS VOR radio tuning head from a B fifty two found at the ⁓ antique store. papiplanes: Low ball. Graywo1f: ⁓ cool. papiplanes: Nice. SCUD: Not going into my simpit, but ⁓ yeah. ⁓ and then I I wanted to say too, you you've you talk about you have a power supply and you limit the current and you don't want to blow anything up and and I'm like, I'm gonna put power on this. I I've done stuff with old like tube amp radios and stuff like that. My my like let's not blow something up is the light bulb. I run the power supply through a light bulb and then you run the light do you run that into the into the FiFi: Ha ha ha. papiplanes: ⁓ okay. ⁓ yeah. It's like a one time fuse, yeah. SCUD: the ⁓ device and you put yeah it will it if if the if there's a short and it draws it a lot of current then it'll it'll ⁓ it'll dim the bulb down. So you put a certain wattage bulb, depending on how much watts the radio takes, and then you you screw the light bulb in and when you would you power it on, if the light bulb's not on or barely on, then it's n it's the current's passing through and and it's or it's pulling you short. I don't remember one way or another. But that's like I literally have this like completely haphazardly put together Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. papiplanes: ⁓ Okay. SCUD: like light bulb with a socket in the side and I just So you got the it's just to me it's funny. He's like, I've got a power supply and I adjust the voltage current. I'm like, I have a light bulb. I plug the radio into a light bulb and if the light bulb turns on I'm I I could die. papiplanes: Yeah. Light ball works. Yeah. Yeah. I love that. That's cool. FiFi: ⁓ man. So what what we'll we'll start wrapping up here. One of the final questions. I'm just going through all our notes of like when we were just been chatting and stuff like that. I just lost it. Where is it? Stalling for time. papiplanes: I was also gonna say too Fifi, I brought a round of trivia for you guys, ⁓ which is why I have all these parts here. So yeah. Graywo1f: ⁓ damn. FiFi: ⁓ boy. yeah, Griller Grillers. I like this one. SCUD: ⁓ hold is that even authorized? Graywo1f: This this is the first guest to bring trivia. papiplanes: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. So FiFi: Yeah. Y yeah, you're you're an esteemed yeah, you're you are an esteemed Yeah, let's do it. SCUD: I like this. papiplanes: Okay, okay, you ready? We're gonna start just with a few items and first one to say it right gets a a cookie. All right. FiFi: No, this is Scud's this is Scud's ASMR video all over again. papiplanes: Yeah, yeah. SCUD: The hook, tell hook. FiFi: No, no. Graywo1f: No, it's the ⁓ flaps. SCUD: ⁓ no, the ⁓ no, that's the ⁓ the friction. Throttle friction. Defog, defog, defog. Graywo1f: ⁓ for the throttle friction? papiplanes: No. No. Zero for zero. Defog, defogged. Yep. Okay. Scud got it. Yeah, defog. Yep. Very cool. FiFi: No. Does it feel like ⁓ my god? Graywo1f: ⁓ snap. God, I'm I'm I'm gonna do so bad at this. I haven't sat in the Hornet cockpit since it had AIM sevens as its longest range missile in DCS. papiplanes: ⁓ yeah. Okay, okay. All right, next one. Who's ready? Who's ready? FiFi: Okay, this is gonna be fun. All right. Graywo1f: ⁓ that's the ⁓ AOA indicator. Or the the ⁓ the enunciator on the left of the HUD. SCUD: I was shooting your shit. FiFi: Let's do SCUD: Lock. papiplanes: Lock, yeah. Lock shoot, yeah, yeah. It has a strobe bulb in here. ⁓ yeah, it goes up ⁓ right above the head, yeah. Yeah, mm-hmm. FiFi: Is that the lock? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's the lock. Graywo1f: Lock. ⁓ for the for the canopy? ⁓ okay. ⁓ FiFi: On the canopy rail, yeah. It's it's the one thing that everybody always wishes they have on the time cat. papiplanes: Yeah, yeah. Guess you just have to guess there, huh? Okay, okay. We'll do we'll do a handful more here. ⁓ we got this one. Okay, ready? Trying to think of a good way to show it off. FiFi: Yeah. Good again. SCUD: ⁓ well I saw the label on it, so FiFi: That's the that's the canopy switch. Yeah, that's the canopy switch, yeah. papiplanes: ⁓ okay. Canopy switch. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Also has a magnetically held switch in it, so when you raise it it'll stay locked until the canopy's up and then it unlatches. So but to go down you have to hold it so that you don't break your arm off. Graywo1f: Canopy open close. ⁓ cool. SCUD: Th that would be the most satisfying thing about your simpan when it's done is hearing all the mechanical or the electrical magnetic switches release. papiplanes: Yeah, it's all d just like all those relays in there. Alright, this next one is a gauge. Okay, I'm slowly gonna turn around. FiFi: That's a g it's your G. it is? Okay. SCUD: That's your ⁓ it's your radar altimeter? No. Yeah. Graywo1f: Is that the ⁓ papiplanes: Radar altimeter. Yeah, yeah. Zero to five thousand. Notice the glass, it's an anti reflective glass. Like it does a really good job at not glaring up. ⁓ so very cool. All right, so that that was number four. We got one more. Okay. Let's make this a good one. Graywo1f: No. FiFi: This has been blowing me away. They just is all these random parts. This is so cool. SCUD: I like this. This is good. papiplanes: Yeah, okay, okay. All right, we're gonna do this one. Graywo1f: That's the ⁓ the air air ⁓ the wing fold. Yeah. FiFi: That's the th No, that's the wingfold, yeah. SCUD: That's the wink fold. papiplanes: Swing fold. Yeah. Yeah. SCUD: That's a look like that how crisp that thing clicks over. Graywo1f: Look how far that goes out too, wow. papiplanes: Lo yeah, look how far yeah, a lot of people don't know that. Is it comes out like I don't know, it's like three inches maybe. I don't know. FiFi: Yeah, I was it Yeah, in game in which is in a we yeah, which that's that's an adequate length. That's that's a that's an adequate length. But yeah. Yeah, that's crazy 'cause like it yeah, it's it's good enough. ⁓ SCUD: Three. I would have called it six or seven, but papiplanes: Yeah, yeah, ten, dude. It's a normal. SCUD: Yeah. It comes out enough, right? It papiplanes: Yeah. And and it only goes back when it's in the spread position. So if it's in hold or fold, it does not go back in, but it does go in there. Graywo1f: What's what you do with yeah. ⁓ nice. FiFi: Huh. It's so weird. Like the game doesn't like in game you don't see how far that actually comes out. That's that's like a papiplanes: Well and like on Graywo1f: In VR do you? Yeah. SCUD: Unless you're in V R. If you're in VR you kinda you kinda get a sense of it. Especially the the Tomcat's gear handle. Get in VR and that thing's like this long right your face. So to speak. FiFi: All right. Well we're not gonna talk about VR. papiplanes: Well. Yeah. Yeah, it's great great. Well, another one that comes out way further than you would expect is the emergency break. ⁓ so it's like it's like pretty far. Yeah. But no, that's cool. Graywo1f: Ha ha ha. SCUD: ⁓ yeah. FiFi: It's super cool. Yep, I've totally lost my train of thought. because Yeah, he did. He's been flying the Hornet a lot more lately than I have though. I've been papiplanes: Fun stuff. Scud Scud won that one. He wiped the floor, yeah. SCUD: Yeah. Fifi's in the Milsim squadron I am for the Hornet, but he is what what are you what's your role there, Fifi? papiplanes: ⁓ nice. FiFi: I had to step away. Like I'm in I'm in reserve right now because I wanna well because I wanna ever to help stand up the Hercules. SCUD: Exactly right. He's a reservist in that unit, which means he shows up once every like three months. He does a couple CBTs, flies the jet for thirty minutes, gets his landing currency, and then he goes back to his normal job. You are you are the epitome of a VR or a virtual reservist. FiFi: Yeah. Like well because I've been in like the I've been papiplanes: Mm. FiFi: I've been over at the Herc debt doing stuff and then I had to step away from that because I got a bunch of stuff going on here at the house that I gotta do. Listen. Listen, give me some slack. But papiplanes: Got a most full of select. SCUD: I just think it's I think it's great. If if you're if there's a MILSIM squadron and you need a MILSIM reservist, Fifi is playing that exactly right. FiFi: I'll just come in and send a couple emails, be like, yeah, that's a good idea. And then go off. But anyways. papiplanes: Ha ha. Playing a pizza party. Yeah. SCUD: Yeah. ⁓ well Poppy, thanks thanks for joining us. ⁓ really excited to have you on. I I know I have been really excited about the project and so I I want I'm happy we can share it with with our viewers and listeners. Normally, ⁓ at the end we just give the guest time to talk about whatever they want. So if you want to take a few minutes, if there's anything we didn't talk about or anything you wanna say, we'll give you the floor. papiplanes: Yeah, this has been awesome. Graywo1f: Yeah, and where c where can people find ya? FiFi: Yeah. papiplanes: ⁓ okay, yeah. ⁓ people can find me on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. I will say I'm on Facebook, but only because bots have been stealing my content. So I comment, this is a fake account. But yeah, you can find me on Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, or go to pocketplanes.com. My link tree is there, you can find all them as well. ⁓ yeah, let's see, content. Graywo1f: ⁓ yeah. papiplanes: Output ⁓ is trending medium to down. ⁓ I'm getting a big change in life. Our daughter is being born next month, so we're preparing for that as a family. Thank you, thank you. And I guess I'll I'll give it a ⁓ a hint that the simpit is in the garage and it is ⁓ some massive overhauls are going underneath. So if you're used to my videos, there's normally the ejection seat and simpit there. ⁓ it's not there because something is cooking up, so stay tuned for that. SCUD: Ooh, congratulations. FiFi: Congrats. Congrats. Graywo1f: Excellent. papiplanes: And I think one thing I'll end on is ⁓ an ask to the community out there if you're watching the video. What do you want to see? What interests you? yeah, i anything you have ⁓ that that that you wanna see content made about the project, I love to get input there ⁓ and so share your thoughts. But ⁓ yeah, it I love making this stuff, loved being on the show tonight, and ⁓ thank you guys. SCUD: ⁓ yeah. Graywo1f: Yeah, thank you very much. SCUD: Nice to have you. We'll let ⁓ Greywolf send us out since he's the voice. FiFi: Yeah. Graywo1f: Well this is embarrassing. What what the hell did I even say? SCUD: Rifle kazoo, buddy. Graywo1f: Yes Jesus Yeah, it's been too long. I apologize. Well ⁓ stick around if you're on Patreon ⁓ for the after show and as always, Rifle Kazoo. FiFi: Hey
