speaker-0: This weekend we had the privilege of participating in the Galloway Run, a 5K honoring the memory and spirit of Jeff Galloway.

speaker-1: In this bonus episode, we'll be talking about our experience. Hey there, friends. Welcome to a bonus episode. This is, and we've only done a few of these before, but this is where we talk about ⁓ races and recap those races that are not at Disney. We kind of separate them. They're shorter, a little less. They don't follow the same structure, but we realized there's other things other than Disney races. so ⁓ every once in while we run one of those. And so that is today. And obviously this is like

speaker-0: That's right.

speaker-1: Disney adjacent, I guess, because, ⁓ you know, this was the race honoring, the life of Jeff Galloway. Also his dad, Elliot, ⁓ there, there's a school in Atlanta called the Galloway school. Right. And so it was, that's where it started. ⁓ it was held there. And I believe if I've read everything correctly, like this was a fundraiser for the school, but obviously do, you know, with the timing and everything of Jeff Galloway's passing, kind of, multi-purpose, good cause, raise support for the school, ⁓ and also honor Jeff. Honor his legacy. So Erica, you want to kind of describe, I mean, I guess I described what it is. Do you want to explain why we decided we wanted to do it?

speaker-0: Yeah. I mean, we kind of talked about it a little bit when we had Chris Twiggs on, but we probably would not be the runners that we are today if it wasn't for Jeff, right? Especially me, like the run walk method. use that all the time for every race. he kind of gave us the permission, if you will, to take those walk breaks when needed. And, know, he really made everyone believe that they, they can do it, you know.

speaker-1: So yeah, it was like, soon as I saw the whatever announcement or email come through that this race was existing, I was like, Oh, we're doing this. It was like, like a loss of a question. And I think one of the reasons it really worked for us, even though a lot of people traveled in for it, I was surprised that the number of people that came from Orlando and we talked to someone who came from Miami, like it came in for this race. We live in Atlanta and this was held in Atlanta. So for us, it just meant getting up early on a Saturday, which you know, We'd be happy to do, but even if it was several hours away, we probably still would have considered doing it. But for us, was a very easy lift to get to. Would you describe it as a local race? We talk about local races kind of being smaller and less involved. you call this?

speaker-0: Totally. I definitely seem more of like a fundraiser race for the school. Yes. But then a bunch of Red Disney people sort of descended upon it.

speaker-1: Yeah, there were a lot of students or like, ⁓ they had a fun run, a one mile front runs or like little kids and their parents. And it was interesting, not in a bad way. It was interesting that like, wonder how many of them thought, why are all these people here that are like, I don't think they're with the school. Yeah. No, I'm sure some people at least thought that. And so yes, local race, no corrals. You know what I mean? Like it was just a start line, but it was kind of weird for me.

speaker-0: They were humble.

speaker-1: So Karissa Galloway was announcing that thing. To hear her announcing it with all her normal energy of announcing a run Disney race. But there's like a few hundred of us standing there, but she still brought it like she always does. So that was interesting. We saw people in their run Disney stuff, right? We were, we wore our Disneyland shirts. We liked those shirts. We just like them, so we wore those.

speaker-0: Yes

speaker-1: And ⁓ lots of people wore a little ribbon. Yep. You know, blue and green.

speaker-0: I still had mine from when we were there for Princess Weekend.

speaker-1: So, yeah, so just had a little bit of Disney touch. Yeah. ⁓ but the primary purpose of course was to honor Jeff. ⁓ so let's talk about the race itself. What was the pre-race? ⁓ like, there any, anything surprised you caught you off guard? You totally expected anything just kind of, you know, arrival and hanging out beforehand.

speaker-0: was kind of surprised they had like several vendors. Yeah, I was not expecting an expo of any kind. So that was, that was fun. Although we didn't really walk through it. We sort of just stood around and talked to people that we know from Disney, but.

speaker-1: There was like a little X-B- Yeah, that was kind of cool. Like because there were so many run Disney folks, like it was cool to, there's a little reunion.

speaker-0: It was fun to see people like outside of Disney.

speaker-1: Yes. Who is it that said recently that like

speaker-0: Yeah, it was the, the, ⁓ Pelke club.

speaker-1: Yeah. ⁓ that's right. Because they talked about it at their race, they're St. Jude. Like they got to just hang out. And there wasn't the craziness of a run Disney morning, the run Disney race where you're like, I gotta go meet someone. So I gotta get a character. got to this. I gotta get some micro out. Yeah. No, like there wasn't that. That's right. And so we saw the Pelkey running club guys standing over there. So we just walked over and very casually had a long conversation.

speaker-0: Yep, hung out with them. We hung out with the Rise and Run gang. John Pelkey was running. He was right behind us. super cool.

speaker-1: It was very cool. It was fun to watch him run and Jodie did too, which was super cool.

speaker-0: very sweet. I've loved getting to meet her.

speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. Interestingly, the spouses of all these run Disney people are better than the people themselves. Yeah. I'm just putting that out there. I haven't met a spouse yet that I was like, I like, I like all the spouses better. Okay. So the race started and it started uphill, which was a good thing because we knew that meant what goes up must come down.

speaker-0: was going to say, one of the exciting things for me when we got there was seeing that mile three marker was going down.

speaker-1: Yeah. When you walked in from the parking lot, you can see the mile three market. was downhill. So we're like, Oh good. This finishes down. But that same hill is where you start.

speaker-0: Yes, there was a lot of uphill on this run. Thank goodness it was only a 5k.

speaker-1: Right. Yeah. So, so describe, describe the race. Any key, anything about the race itself?

speaker-0: It was fun. ran through the park. were in a beautiful area of downtown. So we were, we were sort of just like running with our heads sideways, like checking out all the houses as we ran by them.

speaker-1: One of my favorite moments was when you were like rubbernecking, looking at these like million dollar houses and you tripped on the crack of the sidewalk and you didn't, you weren't, you weren't really in risk of going all the way down. But you like caught your step and you're like, okay, I got to stop looking at houses. ⁓ It was houses and golden doodles. There were like dogs everywhere because it wasn't like a completely closed course. And so they were just, it's like the

speaker-0: I totally tripped on the crack. There's so many golden doodles.

speaker-1: The national dog of Atlanta or a national dog. am I trying to say? the mascot of Atlanta or something. You have to own a golden doodle, you know, to live here. so that, yeah, there's a lot. then the other thing there was a lot of on the course were Hills. Downhills, which there were a lot of downhills. Didn't seem to make up for the amount of uphills were a lot. And if you've ever been to Atlanta and run any Atlanta race, they're all like,

speaker-0: ⁓ yeah. So hilly. not know. Yes. One of the cool things that we got to do was I got to jump on Hollerhype, which normally I don't get to do because I'm at work during the day. But we got on there and somebody had left me a hype and they said, ⁓ do at least one walk break for Jeff. And I just, I think I literally laughed out loud. I was like, I don't have any problem doing hundreds of walks breaks for Jeff on this hilly course. I said, I will do. another run for Jeff. But yeah, you don't have to talk me into doing another walk break on this course. was a, I became one of those people that like speed walks up the hill and then, then tears running down the hill. Yeah. Normally we run up the hills, but this, there was quite a few.

speaker-1: Even I did a little bit. I liked that everyone was celebrating run, walk, run. And so there was no issue with anybody that was slowing down. Everybody raised their hand. know. Yeah. It was nice to just like, yes, this is the way. You know, very Jedi. This is the way. And so that was awesome. The volunteers were awesome. I don't know who they were. Like were they from the school?

speaker-0: Everybody did intervals. I'm thinking yeah, probably parents from the school

speaker-1: Maybe that's why they were so high. Yeah. And I would got some good high fives and they just, they were great. Small, small race, right? But they were spread out through there and just awesome. Yeah. And so, ⁓ that was really great. That was great. ⁓ anything else, was there anything you like super enjoyed or anything? I'm just going to say we didn't enjoy the Hills. Was there anything that you did enjoy about this race that we haven't already mentioned?

speaker-0: like, ⁓ we have spectators. No, I don't think so. I thought we haven't mentioned. ⁓ yeah, that was great. I think I said to you, like, you're not even have to convince me to give it all I've got.

speaker-1: Yeah, I like the downhill at the end. It was downhill, kind of the kind of downhill where you have to put the brakes on.

speaker-0: Right. Where you want to make sure you don't actually like go head over heels.

speaker-1: Yeah, right. And it led right into the finish line.

speaker-0: I'm like, look at me doing your speed. Yeah. think it's actually said my best time was like in the seven minute range. It was, was that downhill. ⁓

speaker-1: We were moving pretty good. For sure. Yeah. Awesome. ⁓ other good thing, like you kind of mentioned, like it was very well supported in terms of like that, the expo vendors and whatever, like all the food.

speaker-0: ⁓ my gosh, they had so much food at the end.

speaker-1: I'm like, it was 8, 8 45 in the morning. like, chicken nuggets.

speaker-0: They had Chick-fil-A, had Moon Pies, they had Snow Cone. Yeah, they had all kinds of stuff.

speaker-1: Yeah, the beer, you got a beer wristband. Yeah. It was very, very well supported. It was more supported than like, like, I mean, for the size of the race, was, it was disproportionately supported. Right. Yeah. You know what mean? Where you're like, there's only a few hundred of us here, but they, did it right. So it was really good. Awesome. Well, overall, Erica, I had a great time at this race. It was a 5k. So at this point in our training and all this stuff, 5k distance isn't super hard. We were not doing this for time. You know, this was all about honoring, honoring Jeff. It was, think, kind of like a side byproduct, whatever. It really great to see all the Run Disney folks. People that we've met on the podcast, but not in person yet, which was super cool. People that we have met in person, which was just a blessing to get to see them again. And I just love that how many people showed up in order to honor Jeff. Coming in from Orlando or Miami or wherever anybody else came from, I think that was super awesome that people put in the effort. Yeah. And then for us, because it's Atlanta, I love that we're supporting a local school. Our kids don't go to that school, but Hey, if we can make the education and the kids and the, you know, the next generation better in our, in our city, to me, that's awesome. So this is a fun race. mean, I hope they continue to do it. You know, it'd be interesting, like future races or whatever, like, I hope they get like this kind of attendance and whatever to help. their fundraising and whatever they need for the school. ⁓ Cause it was a really great race and the course around Chastain park, even though it's hilly, it's really pretty. can see lots of dogs. It's a really great house. Overall, great experience. Obviously we did it to honor Jeff, but I'm so glad that we did. It was worth it. All right. Any other thoughts? Nope.
