speaker-0: We delivered the surprise and springtime surprise by showing up to support our friends who were running their longest race distance ever. speaker-1: Plus on today's episode, we're chatting with our new friend Ryan, who just crossed his 100th run Disney finish line. Hey there friends. Welcome to one more run the podcast. name is AJ. This is Erica and we host this thing to be helpful and inspiring and all that. And today we've got two run Disney topics. We're going to talk about our trip down to do a springtime surprise, which we didn't even participate in. did not. Very last minute. We'll talk all about that. Yes. And that was super fun. It was kind of, mean, maybe the highlight of 2026 so far. And then we also talk with our new friend, Ryan, who you're going to know as Ryan on the run on Instagram and YouTube and all this stuff. He, ⁓ posts lots of helpful information. So we have a great discussion with him because he just crossed his 100th run Disney finish line, which is pretty great. So we wanted to ask him about it. has. speaker-0: That's amazing. speaker-1: pretty cool costume that he wore to celebrate that and all that. that's coming up. But, but before that, you know, we'll do our housekeeping here real quick. Then we'll also talk all about our springtime surprise experience, which was super fun. And then we'll chat with our friend Ryan. So I did want to say here at the top, Erica, that, it's not lost on me that, that people give up their time, right? And their time is precious forever to spend an hour with us every week. Yeah. You know, or sometimes more than an hour. So like right up top, I just wanted to say thank you. Like we recognize you've got a lot of podcasts and a lot of music and a lot going on in your life. Like you've got choices and the fact that you are willing to spend an hour with us, know, talking something as silly as run Disney, you know, we, super appreciate that. We hope that you walk away from this episode and every episode inspired, you know, confident, ⁓ you know, prepared, even if it's just entertained, we hope that these are valuable episodes. So Thank you for tuning in. are so glad that you're here. So Erica, let's read a review and then we'll dive into talking about springtime surprise. Today's review, I believe is from Heather. speaker-0: Yes, so Heather Y.H. says, I first heard of One More Run when you were guests on Rope Drop Radio. I immediately went and binge several episodes. I am new to Run Disney and hope to run my first race next year. I love how enthusiastic you are about running and Run Disney, how authentic you are, and also how much helpful info you provide. Everything from registration tips to what race day looks like. Look forward to more. speaker-1: Perfect. Thank you, Heather. And welcome, welcome to our podcast from rope drop radio, which we love Doug and Lauren. They're awesome. had a great time on their podcast. was an honor to get to do it. I have to tell you a funny story real fast. Um, I left a review for rope drop radio because we tell you, Hey, it helps the podcast. So I leave reviews on other podcasts that I love. You know? And so it's not just a, you know, leave me a review. I actively leave reviews. Anyway, Doug read it. on their podcast this week. And it was very funny because apparently I write the word y'all a lot and I didn't realize how much I use the word y'all. And he pointed out on the podcast, on their show, in case you didn't know, AJ and Erica are from Georgia. And so the y'all, the y'all stuff. speaker-0: We've been here too long. Yeah, we never said y'all in California speaker-1: That's right. That's right. So the y'all stuck out and so maybe we need to do like a y'all account in an episode sometimes. speaker-0: As long we don't do a like count for me. speaker-1: Like, yeah, I say, yeah, you do say like, and I say, you know what I mean? I've noticed that when I listened to the episodes, I'm like, what do mean? Do you know what I mean? Why do you keep saying that? If you want to, if you want to be really critical of yourself, by the way, start a podcast. ⁓ my gosh. It will highlight every annoying thing that you know, you you could find about yourself. Just listen to yourself talk and the ums. I almost just said an ⁓ right then. So. speaker-0: podcast. speaker-1: ⁓ let's dive into today's topics, which first I want to talk about springtime surprise. I do not have an outline for this. I just wanted to talk about what we did. And then we had a chance to talk with our, our new friend, right? And so, ⁓ we'll do that here in just a second. So springtime surprise, everybody that listens to our show knows that we weren't going. We didn't sign up for it. ⁓ we're too busy. It's not our favorite race weekend to run for weather and time of year and all that stuff. And we've done a lot of races this year. And so it was not on the plan, but you want to talk about what we, ⁓ kind of decided, what was it? Maybe a week out. Yeah. Two weeks out. What did we decide? speaker-0: Maybe a little before that, yeah. Yeah, totally. So some good friends of ours, Erin and Tricia, we've known them since college. They are sort of new-ish to running and they were signed up for the challenge for springtime surprise, which was going to be their longest distance ever. And we kind of just looked at each other in the kitchen one day and we're like, we cannot miss this. We have to be there to surprise them and see them at the finish line. speaker-1: They've been a part of our lives for over 25 years. they're newer to running. And we've gotten to be a small part of that journey, you know, which is super cool. So they did do the 10 K at wine and dine this year. That was their first run Disney race. They've done a, uh, actually I was going to say a handful. They've done several five case, you know, local five case to them. And, they signed up for springtime surprise and, um, it was kind of, it was kind of sad because when they signed up, like Aaron was like, Hey, you know, we signed up. And I felt bad. was like, oh no, we're. Yeah. I of felt bad. And then, you know, the months went by and, um, uh, yeah, couple, couple of weeks out, it had always been in my mind, like, you know, it'd be fun to always, you know, surprise them, you know, then we just made the, like the actual decision, you know, to, you know, move things around and make it, and make it happen. Do have a why? Do you have like a deeper why than they're friends of ours? speaker-0: Yeah Yeah, I mean, I think like all of these races are hard, but you know, the first time you do a really long distance like that, it's a big deal. And we ran a lot of races without, we have a lot of good support now from friends and family, but we ran several in the beginning where we didn't have any like, you know, personal spectators or whatever. And then we ran some with spectators, friends that saw us and it made such a huge difference. Totally. And now, you know, we talk about how we love to spectate and cheer people on. And so I think, you know, speaker-1: Just to change the whole thing. speaker-0: Trisha and I had been texting a lot the last couple of weeks and just normal jitters leading up to the race. And I just was like, we just have to be there. We just have to encourage them to finish. And I mean, they were gonna finish regardless of whether we were there or not, but be able to cheer them on, giving them that little extra boost of encouragement and energy that would benefit them getting over the finish line. speaker-1: Yeah. 100%. I 100 % agree with all that on the why. And we just said we're from Georgia because we say y'all a lot. The good news about living in Georgia is that it's only a seven hour drive to Orlando. It is. But what if you have a lot of life events going on the day before? Yes. Like, I don't know, we did. It was the craziest weekend we've ever had. speaker-0: Yes. Right. Yeah. It was crazy. We were celebrating your mom's birthday. already had plans to go to dinner and a concert. And so we went and we did that and we, you know, we were like, okay, we're going to pack the car beforehand. We'll have everything ready. I think we finished the concert. We, got home. We were like, you guys have five minutes to go to the bathroom and get in the car. And we just drove straight overnight, got to Orlando at like 4 15 in the morning or something. speaker-1: Oh, you're being generous. We didn't get there that early. don't think what time. Well, we left here at like 11. I think we were that late. think we rolled in. No, no, no, no. The bus. You're right. It was four 15 because the last bus was stopping at five. Right. Right. Right. We had about a 45 minute window to go into the. Our hotel room wasn't ready yet. And we've got the kids. This is totally different for us. We're like, like you and I, you know, we can, we can do hard things. We're like. speaker-0: How do we get there? Change our clothes, brush our teeth. speaker-1: Hey, here's your clothes. We've already set them out. Put this on, brush your teeth. speaker-0: And then of course our daughter Taylor, she drove from college. met So our entire family got to be there to cheer people on it was awesome speaker-1: That was the extra bonus. It was very cool. ⁓ so yes, all night drive. Did you sleep? did not sleep. 15 minutes. My neck was like sideways. You know what I mean? Yeah. In the seat. ⁓ but not much. Yeah, but totally worth it. So we arrived, we change, we get on the run Disney bus, right? And good news. We know how to do this, right? Because we are runners. We know exactly. We don't have to deal with Epcot traffic. speaker-0: were awake for like 48 hours. speaker-1: We can leave all our stuff and everything at the hotel. We hop on the bus. We are so excited. We got like 30 minutes before race starts. speaker-0: ⁓ my gosh, it was terrible. speaker-1: We get the world's most lost bus driver. He turned the wrong way out of Coronado Springs, which I experienced at marathon weekend. The bus, I would like to say this to all the bus drivers. If you listen to our podcast, you turn right out of Coronado Springs. Okay. I'm just saying that right now, right? This is our second time that a bus driver turned left. And I immediately said to you, we're going the wrong way. We've done this before. And our last time that this happened. speaker-0: Bless him. speaker-1: They got the guy quickly pulled into the gas station, had a hard time turning around in the gas station, but turned around and headed the right way. This guy committed to the wrong way and turned another right. I'm like, I'm saying to you, what I said, I I said, what do I do? Because he's going the wrong way. This is not. speaker-0: Everybody starts like whispering in their seats like we are going the wrong way. That's correct. Yes. speaker-1: There's runners on this bus. We're not running. If we're late, our goal is to cheer. Right. Right. And we want to see them at the end. We know they've got corral time and all that. We aren't stressed, but there's a bus full of runners that I now feel responsible for. so we're going the wrong way. All of a sudden he starts following signs to like I-4. speaker-0: Yeah, we're, we're, well, basically we're like sitting like halfway on halfway off, like the freeway. He's like, we're like barely. speaker-1: big expressway 20 miles an hour. he's literally saying, ⁓ and then I think he sighed at one point. It was like, I, this is so confusing. I finally piped up and I don't remember my exact words, but I was a little more like, ⁓ assertive AJ came out a little bit. I was like, Hey, if we're going to Epcot, which is where the race is, you need to turn around. And I think I said it just like that. You know, I didn't say the Epcot part cause that's coming up. I was like, if you If we're going to the race start, you need to turn around. Yes. And he's like, ⁓ okay. I'm like, take a right right now. Get off, get off. speaker-0: We were off property. Yeah, we was like the see a real soon sign had passed or whatever it says. It was terrible. speaker-1: I bad. And then I don't want to throw this other person on the bus, but she starts chiming in on what she thinks we need to do for directions. It must've been her first race because she's got her GPS. Yeah. She was like, get off right now. Get off right now. speaker-0: This is where you get off. And you were like, where are you? speaker-1: I yelled at her, like not in a mean way, but I just like yelled across the bus, said, where are your directions taking you? And she was that's not where the race is. Now I'm yelling at both of them. I'm yelling at the driver going, no, no, no, no, no, don't get off this. Do not get off. Do not get off. know what I mean? You're going to Epcot, stay left. And she goes, why are we going to Epcot? I'm like, ⁓ my gosh, please just stay left. speaker-0: Right. It's just the ESPN Center. We need to go to Epcot. Everyone's still on the bus driver to go. It was a hot mess. speaker-1: And then finally, when we were on course, on track and we're pulling, I almost sighed a sigh of relief at one point, but I thought, no, I'm not breathing heavy until we're in that parking. There's still room. And when he finally got in a line of buses, I was like, okay, we're good now. speaker-0: Yeah, there's still room for it. Yeah, I told our kids, I'm like, when this bus stops, do not move. Let all these runners off. We speaker-1: We were the last ones. ⁓ my gosh. if you know, first time runner, like, I don't know, like how you handle that. Right. Right. Like, you know, I was assertive enough, not because I was trying to be a jerk, like, done it. Yeah. And I knew how all these runners were feeling. Right. Did not have 30 minutes to go. Yeah. speaker-0: You're very plain about it. Did not know. How long do you think the whole thing took? It felt like forever. I was gonna say, it was quite a while. speaker-1: I had 20 minutes. But it should have been a seven minute drive. Right. You know what mean? But he added an extra 20 minutes. Yeah. I mean, it was, was a lot for the runners. So anyway, that has nothing to do with why we went, but we arrived. speaker-0: For sure. will say it confirms your advice to get to the bus stop early. Do not wait for the last bus. Sleeping in for 20 extra minutes is not worth it if you miss the race. speaker-1: Correct. Yeah. 100 % agree with that. Yeah. And we, that was like a 430 bus, right? You know what I mean? And so it just not worth it. No. Uh, the interesting thing that I don't know is like, assume that bus driver had done this. Right. speaker-0: We talked about this. Yeah. Like, haven't you already done this? speaker-1: But then maybe he was a floater bus that, there's a bunch of runners over at Coronado. Yeah. So I'm not sure how after three days and it's the last 30 minutes, how you could get lost at that point. I'm not sure. So, so sorry, ⁓ bus driver friend. did apologize to him on my way off. said, sorry for being direct. Thank you for getting us here. But if you're any chance, you're listening to the podcast. speaker-0: Or maybe he came from another hotel. I don't know. speaker-1: Sorry for calling you out. Um, okay. So we finally get there. Kids are starving. I'm actually starving because we didn't stop. was the other funny thing. So normally we got like a Bucky's stop on the way. And then we'd stop at the state line and Hey, anybody want our picture at the state line? Not this one. I'm like, I always see Bucky's. I'm like, uh, we don't have time for that. speaker-0: We're not even stopping. We're stopping at a regular gas station. speaker-1: at a regular gas station and I joked, I'm like, Hey, go to the bathroom. Don't wash your hands. You know, like, like we don't have time for that. speaker-0: They did wash their hands just for everyone listening. speaker-1: But it was, mean, we got gas, we were, we were in and out of that gas station. fast. minutes. Because we wanted to make sure we didn't miss getting there. Right. Right. Right. Right. Yeah. And so, uh, so we got there. means we hadn't had breakfast or anything. Yeah. And, so we went and I went and I, was all good because I was going to get there and have Wetzel pretzel for breakfast. That's what I was going to do. And the Wetzel pretzel truck wasn't there. I know. I've never not seen it. And so we got. speaker-0: was not like what's ever not been there. Yeah. speaker-1: breakfast sandwiches at some, some other truck. Kids were fed, kids were happy. And then we just explained to the kids, Hey, here's the deal. And we told them beforehand, but I reminded them, we had a family powwow. You know, I like huddled everybody in like arms around them. I'm like, here's the, here's the game plan. We are here for two specific people and 10,000 other people as well. We are not here for your personal preference right now. You're welcome to sit on a bench. You're welcome to cheer your head off. You're not. here to look like a sad teenager who doesn't want to be up at four in the morning. We are here to do, to cheer on people who are doing a hard thing. Everyone understand? And they were like, yeah, dad, just like teenagers. And so it's good because, ⁓ our kiddos cheer. You know what I mean? And, that, that I think it helped reframe every whatever. And Taylor was obviously really excited. She, you she does run Disney all the time, so she knows the deal. And, ⁓ so we did, we, ⁓ stood there. found our spot at the bus loop. speaker-0: I hate you. speaker-1: ⁓ which was really cool. Yeah. I thought it was a really good spot. So the bus loop at Epcot is not on all their courses, right? But it was on the marathon and it's on this one. You literally get to stand against the course. Yeah. You know, where it's like at the finish line, you can't do that. Yeah. ⁓ what'd you like about that spot? Just it was close. Yeah. speaker-0: to be so close. I felt like we could cheer people on and they could hear us. I mean, they hear us from like the final curve. yeah, mean, they were close. Like you could do your high fives and power ups and all those things. And yeah, we were looking for a lot of friends from the podcast and all that stuff. And so they were all right there. We could see them and cheer them on. So that was fun. speaker-1: I liked being able to, if it was quiet enough or someone was close enough that I could say something to them in this volume, which I think makes it a little more, I'm going to use the word intimate. That's not like the right thing, but it it more personal. Someone, if they were close enough, I could literally just say it like this, like you're killing it. You know what I mean? Or way to go. got this. And it felt different than let's go. You've got this right. Which we did the whole time. speaker-0: You right there. You're doing it. speaker-1: Yes. You know, but I like to be in that close. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ that was, it was very cool. So we cheered for hours and it was awesome. The kids lasted the whole time. ⁓ any notable things before we talk about Erin and Tricia coming through. speaker-0: It was fun to see friends that we've made through the podcast. It was fun to see them. speaker-1: And it was our honor to cheer you on. Like, we, know how hard, even a, any distance, but we know how hard a 10 miler is in the heat, you know, and all that stuff. And that spot was mile nine. So you had a mile left. We'd love to throw some fuel on your fire. I've said that before, ⁓ with a mile left. instead of just one curve left, know, we were giving you a, hopefully a little bit of like, yes, you can, you know, right. speaker-0: think a cool thing that happened was we got to see Greg from Rise and Run. ⁓ we talked last week, right, about how he encouraged me on the marathon course this year. And so was kind of cool to be able to be on the opposite side of that and cheer him on this time. So that was really fun. speaker-1: Yeah. Y'all are probably sick. ⁓ there was a y'all. Did you hear it? did hear it. Yeah. Y'all are probably sick of hearing it. That cause we now have just spectated. So now we just love it. But like, don't necessarily need a run Disney race bib all the time anymore because I had so much fun cheering at every single race weekend that we did this year. And this one, I mean, we, we were exhausted. Yeah. That's something about cheering on a runner. Okay. All right. So Aaron and Tricia came through, tell the story. So I was tracking them on the app thing and I had to give away the secret to Aaron because I, you know, in advance, because I just could not risk missing them come through. So I was like, dude, here's where we are. know, and he was, it meant a lot to him that we were there. So I don't think it took away from that, but Tricia got the surprise. Aaron got the heads up so that I could, he set up to find my friends. And, um, so we're standing there and I'm gonna let you tell it, but I'm gonna tee it up with, I said, all of a sudden, Erica, they're like right on top of us. And he's like, no, aren't, you know, or something like that. And then they were. So tell it, tell it. speaker-0: Yes. You know what mean? You're like, this should be here. So I saw them from a little bit of ways and it was like when she saw us there, she was like, what the heck? You know what I mean? She just like had no idea. And it was awesome. And I'm like, come on, like motion her to like run over here, know? Yes, yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And she's like, I can't believe you guys are here. And I'm like, we would not miss this like for the world, you know? And so that was great. We got to see them like. speaker-1: could tell she was processing for a second. Like, what? speaker-0: give a couple of hugs, take a super fast photo, and I'm like, keep going. We took a video. speaker-1: We take a photo. didn't take a video. Yeah. have video of it. I wanted to take a photo, but like it all happened so fast. It's that balance of like experiencing a moment and videoing them or whatever. Like I really wanted to be in it. Yes. But I also really wanted to capture for them. speaker-0: Yes, totally. And I didn't want to slow them down. Like I wanted them to be able to, you know, keep going, finish. so, so that was just really special. You could tell that it, really kind of like, well, both of them, but for sure her, just gave her like a little bit of a boost to finish, you know, to get to the end. So. speaker-1: I think so. I don't think she would hate me calling her out on this. They made that turn at the bus loop and you could tell that she was tired. speaker-0: Well, yeah, after three days. speaker-1: Three days. It's your longest distance ever and it was hot. It very muggy and we all have that look. Yeah There are races where I'm like even I'm not even talking like the full ones like I'm about like like this type of distance where my face is just like Hanging, you know what mean? Like low speaker-0: Totally. I was there yet. speaker-1: Yeah, you know, like that kind of look. She just had that coming around when we first saw her down the way in the bus loop. Yeah. And then the minute I don't know if she saw you because you were screaming or what. speaker-0: was acting a fool. Let me tell you. I was screaming and like shaking the clapper. I was going crazy. speaker-1: her whole everything changed. Yeah. You know, which is great. Yeah. Like that's 20 something years of friendship and whatever colliding. They're not like, like anything else. It's not about us. You know, it's like the long-term relationship and getting to support her then it was great. It did exactly what we needed. And if we didn't see them again on the entire rest of the trip, that would have been okay with me. mean, I want to see them. Yes. They're willing to hang out and get some pictures or whatever. Right. Awesome. But like that five seconds makes the seven hour drive down and drive back. Totally worth it. Yeah. speaker-0: She and I had been texting the couple days leading up to it. And I knew that she had sort of like been battling an injury there at the end. you know, just like the last minute jitter, she's a school teacher. And so I know she'd been like super busy with her kids. And it was just a really special moment to be able to celebrate all that she'd accomplished, all the training that they'd put in. You know, we've experienced having friends on the sidelines now and it's, it makes, it's a totally different race. And so I just loved that she has that moment now. speaker-1: And you know there's 10,000 or 15,000 other runners that are going through whatever their thing is too, right? And they may or may not have their people. But like every single story, like there's somebody there that they've been trying to do this for 10 years and they haven't been able to. Every runner out there is a story. And that's what I love about running Disney and I love about running in general is that you just don't know what someone's... Story is. so we'd be kind and courteous and cheer them all on. That's right. I mean, I don't care if you look like a runner or don't look like a runner. They all got a scream from that's right. Yeah. speaker-0: If you've ever seen us on the sidelines and you don't have anyone else there cheering you on, know that we are there for you. And we're excited for you. speaker-1: See any cool costumes? So many. There were a lot of bing bongs. There were. speaker-0: That was fun. Every time we'd start singing the song. speaker-1: And we started it, right? Uh, Oh, we didn't talk about, we stood next to, we stood next to, uh, Erica with the CK and, uh, cat was standing there and cat had the best sign of the entire race weekend. said, uh, uh, it was a play at the Nike thing, which I don't want to get political right now, but like runners welcome Walker celebrated Walker. Yeah. And so it was so good. I had a ATAT on it too. So it was Star Wars and it was really great. So speaker-0: celebrated. speaker-1: That was cat sign and Erica was there too. And they just brought the energy, right? Which was cool to be next to them. Cause then every time we would do something, they would help amplify it. And then when we got tired or quiet, they would do something. And then like we said before, the whole line of people down there, like we bring this much energy as we could bring, know, and they would all whatever. So back to the bing bong every time we see a bing bong, our kids started it. speaker-0: Hey, who's your friend who likes to speaker-1: Anyway, it was so good. Any other costumes that you super loved? speaker-0: I don't know. I'm trying to think. There were a lot of things that I saw at the time that I thought were so cool, but now I can't think of anything. I hadn't really slept much, so yeah. speaker-1: There were a lot of angers out there, a lot of joys, a lot of disgust. So very, very heavy on the inside out thing. Totally. ⁓ Cool. Okay. Anything else about that? Cause as soon as we like to stay to the last runner, but we did not on this time because we made the drive for two people, you know, and we wanted to cheer on as many people as possible. And we did that ⁓ from the first runner all the way until our people came through. But we needed to go see air and nutrition and celebrate them. Right. So anything else before we talk about that? Cool. So we went and celebrated Aaron and Tricia. That's what we did. We actually hauled, hauled, but around to the final curve. And I was bold and just like, went up to some people and was like, Hey, my runners coming in. Can I slip in here? You know I mean? Like, like, you know, and they're like, yeah, come on, right here. And so we saw them come through the final thing and I don't think they were expecting us to be there either. Right. Right. Right. But we just screamed, you know, and then they came out, they did, we, you know, we waited. ⁓ What do you call that? speaker-0: Yes. speaker-1: Reunion area and they came out and we got pictures and it was so great. And then now we got to finally talk, you know, and to your point, were surprised. Tricia was surprised. So grateful. ⁓ but that wasn't the point. The point was, did you feel celebrated? Right. Right. Whatever. and they did. Yeah. So it's awesome. We got our picture with them. Yep. It was super cool. That was really good. After that we rounded up our kids. ⁓ they were, you know, they, were wonderful, but they were teenagers and they were done. You know, like that was a long time to not. You know, whatever. but they all did say the spectating was a great experience, which is really good. So then we rounded them all up. We hopped on a friend, Disney bus, you know, and went back to the hotel, checked in and crashed. I mean, we were out and then we spent the rest of the day. ⁓ well, actually we ended up meeting up with Aaron and Tricia again, spent about an hour with them, debriefing about the race. They were eaten. It was so cool. They were eating all this protein. Right. at the pool bar or whatever. And I was like, you listen to the bar. Okay. Yeah. And they were, they would tell us all the things that, that helped. Yeah. I mean, and so that was cool to hang out with them. And then we spent some time with the kids just on property. You know, we went and rode the skyliner and the motor rail and all this stuff. And then, uh, we had it out. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, that's true. the fireworks of the power. speaker-1: Yeah, we did watch the fireworks. Go ahead. Tell us about that. was it. That was it. got. That was it. It wasn't emotional for you at all. ⁓ yeah. I know it was. ⁓ well you haven't cried yet. You're going to cry. Like everybody expects that at this point. So we went to watch the fireworks and we sat on the beach at the Polynesian. Yes. All five of us lined up in a row. Yep. And, ⁓ we've had this experience before. speaker-0: We watch the fireworks. It was emotional. Talk about it. speaker-1: Where it was, it was at Pismo beach in California. We had done this road trip down the Pacific coast highway and everybody was their normal self. They all are awesome kids, but someone's gotta have an opinion. Someone's got to have a problem with somebody else. Somebody doesn't want to eat that right now. You know what I mean? So and so is touching me all of that. And then this is a few years ago, we're sitting at Pismo beach and we're sitting there eating. clam chowder and corn dogs and everyone stopped. it was like the five family members sitting in a row. Quiet, just sitting there. And we had that same exact thing. We didn't craft it. It just happened. Sitting on the sidewalk of the Polynesian with our toes in the, in the sand, watching happily ever after. was just quiet. I know. Yep. speaker-0: It made me sad. I can't talk about it without crying. speaker-1: I know. So I know we talked about it. We're, ⁓ we have a life full of memories and love and, and all that. Our kids came and participated in this and celebrated friends with us. You know what I mean? And, we love that they were along for it. You know mean? Sure. They didn't do, you know, all the things they wanted to do all the time, whatever, but you know, we, ⁓ we love the life we get to live at the moment. And that doesn't mean that that's not hard sometimes, but that was like that. That little moment where everyone was quiet. Taylor came and joined us from college and we got to sit together as a family. So that was a really nice special moment. It was sweet. And then we didn't want to take the monorail to the monorail to the bus to another bus to get back to our resort. That would have been the steps. speaker-0: Yeah. Well, because the buses are free. speaker-1: team. It's 11, uh, the fireworks were at 10. So it's 10 30, right? And literally we had to take the monorail to the monorail to the bus, to the bus to get home. And we've been up and we took a nap, but we've been up. So I splurged for the first time in our Disney history and got a mini van, you know, I was like, Whoa, these things are expensive. But we were back at our hotel in like eight minutes. speaker-0: Yes This is great. speaker-1: And he said, what building are you in? And we're like, ⁓ we're staying in that. He goes, would you like me to drop you off there instead of the front of the resort? And we're like, please do. Wow. This is, this is fancy. So we, ⁓ we did that and that was our springtime surprise trip next morning. Obviously we checked out and headed out. So it was super fun. It was really fun to celebrate all of our, all of our friends, especially our friends that we've known for, I keep saying over 20 years. mean, it's. We went to college in 1999. So whatever that is 27. Dang we're old. But that means Erin and Trisha are old too. we can all be old together. Awesome. Okay. Cool. So Erica, we had a chance to chat with our new friend, Ryan, Ryan on the run is how everybody's going to know him on Instagram. And we had a chance to talk with him for 20 minutes or so, because he just ran his 100th Disney race at springtime surprise. So while we're doing this and whatever he, you know, speaker-0: You Hey speaker-1: Uh, is, literally celebrating his one hundredth race. And, so I, I reached out and said, Hey, would you be willing to come share some things you've learned in the one, you know, 100 races? I think he said it took 11 years to do that or whatever. So he's been doing this for awhile. So anyway, we're to get some insights from him. Uh, of course we're going to play some would you rathers and all that. And so you hear that conversation right now. All right, friends, this is super exciting because we have somebody you probably already follow on Instagram and YouTube and all the things on the podcast, which is super exciting for us because Ryan, who you might know as like Ryan on the run, like that's his, his tackling. ⁓ you, you most likely already follow we have for years. ⁓ he's like, costumes are awesome. Information's awesome. And we're to talk about all the things that he does. ⁓ but we're just thrilled to have him on. podcast. This is super exciting. Everything except for the fact that he's a Wisconsin fan and we're Georgia fans. So like that, that, that I'm not sure about, but Ryan is so exciting to have you on the podcast. Thanks for being here, my friend. This is awesome. speaker-2: ⁓ Thanks for having me. Excited to be here. speaker-1: Dude, this is so cool. We usually like to get to know people by asking would you rather questions, right? So we'll get into your history and all that stuff, but that's, that's, that's boring in comparison to the would you rather cause the would you rather is we really get to the heart of who you are. know, like we, can judge, can judge deeply based off of the would you rather. you, you willing to play a, play a couple of rounds. All right. Perfect. Erica, let's alternate. speaker-2: Yeah, definitely. speaker-1: ⁓ I'll ask first run here. Here you go, Ryan, if you need to explain fine, if you don't, if you feel confident in your answer, that's good. Would you rather at a run Disney race, start in Corral A or have early entry to the run Disney merchandise? Which one would you, if you could only have one. speaker-2: ⁓ I would say I would rather start in Corral A. speaker-1: Excellent. Is that because you don't love the merchandise or just starting upfront is more important to you? speaker-2: I love to stop for the characters, I think that having those shorter lines is helpful. speaker-1: Yeah. So you don't necessarily want to run fast. You want to make many stops. that what I'm hearing? Yeah, exactly. That's right. That's right. Awesome. for it. ⁓ speaker-0: I mean, how will studio do? That's right. All right, Ryan, would you rather wear a Disney inspired costume at a regular local 5k or a plain outfit at a Disney 5k? speaker-2: ⁓ Probably a Disney inspired outfit at a local 5k. No, I don't think I have. ⁓ I don't think I've really dressed up for a local race yet. speaker-1: Yeah, have you ever done that? Yeah. Well, you need to try it and then come back and answer that question because we've done it and we got some looks and we weren't in like full costume. It was just, you know, like haunted mansion, whatever. And people definitely, definitely had some comments, but I don't care. can, they can judge all they want. I'm a Disney runner. ⁓ here's another, would you rather, would you rather run the marathon with no phone? We're talking 26.2 miles or no photo pass. Which way would you, which one would you rather go without? speaker-2: I would say no phone because PhotoPass I think does a really good job. So I love those photos so I think I could manage without a phone. speaker-1: Yeah, no music. No, no. speaker-2: Now, on a Disney race, I don't listen to anything usually, so I just take it all in. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: Okay. Would you rather have to eat the Biduco toast or sports beans? speaker-2: Sports beans. I have run and trained with sports beans. The Biduco toast I am not a fan of automatically in the garbage. speaker-1: Okay, they do. I get those in the runners box and I just separate the good and the bad, you know what mean? And I'm like, our toast is out of here. speaker-0: Okay, but you actually train with sports beans? you eat them on your... Nice, okay. ⁓ speaker-1: Willingly. Willingly. Wow. You're the first person I know that does that. Is that because you're training for the Disney race and you know they're serving them or you just... speaker-2: That's usually how it works. Yeah, so I don't have to carry them, ⁓ you know on me during the race though. I do also do the now because they have the honey stinger choose to so I'll use those as well, but speaker-1: Awesome. I've not met someone that trains with sports. Now we know somebody we can put you on the list. ⁓ here's another, would you rather, would you rather go on a, this is, this is run Disney meets like another love of yours. can, I can tell, you know what mean? Would you rather go on a five night Disney cruise or run springtime surprise? Now let me put the note in here. You're perfect with the 10 miler, I believe. So if you take this Disney cruise, you're giving up that perfect status, right? Which one would you rather do? speaker-0: We know. speaker-2: I would take springtime surprise now because now that I am perfect, I'm gonna keep that. speaker-1: That's awesome. If the springtime wasn't a factor, if we just said four night race, you know, four night or five night cruise, four night race weekend, which one would you choose? Yeah. That perfect status is important to you. Huh? Absolutely. What do you get like at this point? That's five years, right? speaker-2: I probably would take the cruise then. Yeah, so this is the first year obviously for Perfect and right now they just gave you a Perfect bib and then you get like a lanyard that says Perfect at the end. speaker-1: Okay. It doesn't get you like guaranteed race entry or some. speaker-2: Yeah, so starting next year it will. speaker-1: Okay. So perfect status for those who don't know is, Ryan is basically if you've completed all of the races, right of whatever it is, right? So if it was princess, I think it's like 17 at this point, or if you're perfect marathon, gosh, that's like 34 or something like that. So you're perfect in, uh, in what? Just the, in, in the 10 mile. Oh, perfect. Awesome. speaker-2: 10-Miler and the Challenge. speaker-0: So great. Ryan, we ask all of our podcast guests for a Disney half marathon, would you rather run down Main Street or have a finisher medal for that half? And you can only have one for that race. speaker-2: So I'm gonna be team finisher medal. Yes! speaker-1: All right. Thank you, Ryan. Welcome to the club. speaker-2: ⁓ Mostly because I personally am not a huge fan. I love running down Main Street, however, that is not my favorite Disney half course. My favorite Disney half course is the old Wine and Dine course where you started in the Magic Kingdom parking lot, ran to Animal Kingdom through Hollywood Studios and then to Epcot. So I'd rather have that course and get a medal than run down Main Street. speaker-1: Wow. That's bold statement right there to even have a course that you prefer over one that includes Main Street. That's bold, but I love it. So I don't know if you know this, Ryan, Erica and I are divided on this. So she's team Main Street and she has amassed like a massive group of, ⁓ you know, unfortunately misguided, misguided. ⁓ It's very lopsided right now. I mean, I think it's like 70, 30, like it's, pretty bad, but Ryan's helping the cause. So it's all good. Welcome to the team. speaker-0: This? I don't think so. speaker-1: Awesome. Those are our would you rathers. And now, now I feel like I, I mean, I, I know, I know you, I like you, I like you because, cause you answered the questions correctly. said Disney cruise, ⁓ you, ⁓ you know, the sports beans versus toast is a hard one because in my opinion, neither one are very good, but we know, we know you now and your team finisher metal. it's all good. Ryan, we're going to jump into something super exciting today, which is you like achieved something pretty significant at the, at the last run Disney race weekend. Which I don't want to tease. Maybe I would just say it. Ryan ran a hundred run Disney races, I believe 101, right? And so, we wanted to have you on the podcast to just talk about like, what's it been like, you know, and all that stuff, ⁓ and just ask you some questions. And so before we do that, I want people to kind of get context of like who you are. So we know you as Ryan on the run on Instagram. I see like you do like course preview things and you, you, you, yeah, I'm not sure how this came about. I'd love to know like. I seem you who I get like the weather report from life. I'm not sure where that came from. know you're a travel agent, right? Um, but that's really the extent of what I know. You've got some great YouTube videos. Can you give us like a quick introduction of like, did I cover it all? Is there anything I'm missing? Like what? speaker-2: I covered it. I covered it perfectly. Yeah, yeah, well, like you said, I'm a travel agent, but primarily, just, I don't know, somehow I just started amassing information and sharing it on Instagram. it's been probably four or five years now that I've been doing this weather thing. the last couple of years, it's kind of really grown and I've now got special graphics for it all these. all these things. just usually would share screenshots of what the weather would be. But yeah, it's been a lot of fun. People just love sharing and helping people with their first run Disney races or their 100th run Disney races. However, you know, it shakes out. speaker-1: That's awesome. speaker-0: Let's start at the beginning. When was your first friend Disney Race and why did you sign up for it? speaker-2: So my first Run Disney race was 2015 ⁓ Marathon Weekend, the 10K. I had never run any, I'd done like, you know, some charity 5Ks local stuff like that before, but never actually done like a real race. So I have a cousin who had done a ton of Run Disney races and she was perfect, dopey through ⁓ the first five years. And that's kind of how I discovered Run Disney. And then... ⁓ I had been going to Disney since I was eight months old, so it's been in my family forever. just to get another excuse to go to Disney was everything I needed basically, and so the rest is kind of history from there. speaker-1: Yeah, you may have said the year in there. How many years has this been now that you've been doing this? speaker-2: Yeah, this was year 11, 2015, so. speaker-1: That's awesome. Rather than like point out, like telling us like every single race you did, like, there anything that like you skipped? Right? Like, was there any like, you've only missed one or, or, or is there a race weekend you just don't generally do? anything you've missed in those 11 years. speaker-2: Generally don't do Princess. I've done every marathon weekend since 2015. that one I don't ever miss and now I've obviously perfect springtime so don't miss that one. And generally don't miss Wine and Dine either. I've done most of those. speaker-0: Brian, in general, what is your favorite race weekend and why? speaker-2: Marathon weekend, I've done obviously done that the most and it's it's the biggest you see the most people there It's always like kind of this big, you know party. I just love it's also kind of with the marathon You kind of get that more I don't want to say necessarily serious aspect, but it's just it's a different vibe compared to some of those other weekends speaker-1: If you could only do one race at one weekend, right? Like out of all, whatever it is, 16, I don't even know how many races there are in a year. If you can only pick one, what would you choose? speaker-2: I'd probably choose the marathon, getting to run through all four parks and just that whole atmosphere. I love that race. speaker-1: You get your most free of money on that one, right? Your mileage goes, literally goes further on that. That's awesome. ⁓ so can we go back to like, we, you know, talked about how you share a lot of information, right? So you not only participate in all these races and now you've done over a hundred of them and I'm sure they're fun and you love the racing, but why do you put so much effort and energy into creating some helpful information for us, right? Like the weather report and you know, some of the YouTube videos and the course maps, like, why do you do that? What's your why behind. speaker-0: That's right. speaker-2: It's nice to help people out. I have fun with it, with creating the graphics and those kind of things. ⁓ If I didn't do it, don't know if I, or I should say if I didn't do the social media thing, I don't know if I would still be doing these races, because I think that the whole thing is meeting the people and experiencing that. speaker-1: We've said a few times now that like what started out as like wanting to get a medal or running down main street or dressing up in a cool costume has now shifted for us into it's the people. Right. And so I think you go your first time or your second time or whatever, and you're, you're wrapped up into what run Disney can do for you or what you're going to get. Right. And then all of sudden the merch falls off and that's not as important as meeting new people, hearing people's stories, connecting with old friends. And so it sounds like that's the same for you. speaker-2: Absolutely, yeah, I've some my my best friends now are through I've met through on Disney so yeah speaker-1: That's awesome. So we talked about it a second ago, but at springtime surprise, you crossed your 100th finish line. What race was that? And tell us about the experience. Like tell us all the emotions we want to know. speaker-2: Yeah, so that would have been the 10K. I knew going in I wanted to do something special and then I searched some ideas and came up with the jacket that I had made up and with images from, you know, race number one to race number, I think, 98 was on there. So just, you know, kind of throwing that all together and getting that made. And then my friends dressed up as weather elements and stuff like that to kind of, you know, play off the weatherman. thing that I do on Instagram, so it was a lot of fun. speaker-1: Tell us a little more about this jacket, because I've seen a picture of it, but for someone who hasn't seen it, right? Maybe you can share the photo with us and we'll post it too or whatever. But tell us about the jacket, like describe it, because it's really cool. speaker-2: Yeah, so I found some place on Etsy and I just was like, hey I want to you know, put a bunch of race photos on here essentially and they're like well we do usually do like 22 photos and I'm like well how about 35? Because I couldn't narrow it down. ⁓ So they thankfully work with me and I got over 30 photos on there and ⁓ just you know kind of represents big moments throughout my kind of run Disney story from the first race. first marathon, different milestones throughout that, just kind of all represented throughout. speaker-1: Yeah. I think I saw a picture of you with John Pelkey and you had a picture of John Pelkey on your jacket at the same time. Was there anything else like super, super creative like that? speaker-2: Yeah, so the John Pelkey thing, that's kind one of my race traditions is every finish line I try to get a selfie with John and for the most part probably I'd say a good 80 of the races I've accomplished that so that's why he was on there. Usually some of my favorite costumes were on there. the one time, this was springtime a couple years ago we did a group Living With The Land. costume so that that was featured that's one of my favorites the one year the very first springtime I was the plastic cheese so that was on there so just different stuff like that speaker-1: super cool. I challenge you to wear that jacket to a local race. Remember we were talking? I challenge you to wear that and see how it goes. Tell me about the feeling, right? Like, like, was it overwhelming? Was it just exciting? Like, was there, was there any emotion that came with that 100th race? speaker-0: I'm here. speaker-2: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah, I would say actually I kind of didn't get the emotion until after the weekend as a whole I think I was more of a the race itself was fun and just enjoyed it and then come ⁓ Sunday night I was watching luminous at Epcot and that just kind of kind of when it hit so speaker-1: You know, there's Epcot music. Even just like the music when you're walking into Epcot sometimes, even that'll get me on a race weekend after I've done something hard for sure. speaker-0: Ryan, what have you learned over the years of doing run Disney races that would help someone who might be brand new to it? speaker-2: I think Run Disney as a whole is very inclusive and teaches you that you can do hard things. ⁓ From this I've run plenty of other races. I've run New York, I've run Chicago. without Run Disney I don't think I would have done those things. So I think it's really kind of opened my horizons into trying and doing different things outside of just Run Disney. speaker-1: for that person that signed up for their first run Disney, right? Maybe they've already signed up for marathon weekend or wine and dine and they're not regretting, that's not the right word. They're a little nervous. They've never run this distance before, anxious, that's a great word. What's your advice to them to just calm some nerves maybe because you've done this a lot now, right? Your confidence is high because you know what you can and whatever you can do. So what's your advice to that person who's a little nervous? speaker-2: ⁓ yeah, just enjoy it. think ⁓ it's, I mean still after a races I get nervous, especially on marathon day I think that's the day I get the most kind of nervous or anxious. ⁓ Cause it's still a challenge. mean marathons are not easy and ⁓ you know whether you're doing the 5k or a marathon or Dopey or whatever it is, it's, you gotta put in work to in order to get to that finish line and... Putting in that training and then seeing it pay off on race day is something special and I think everybody should experience that. speaker-1: Yeah, totally. Any reminders for those of us that have done a bunch, right? That maybe, you know, we've forgotten what that first time feeling is like, you know what I mean? Or we're so consumed with, you know, uh, corral placement or getting the merchandise or anything. Any reminders for those that have done it a lot. speaker-2: Yeah, think especially the corral placement thing, think people, you know, obsess over that quite a bit. I have started in A, and I've started in the last corral. You can have fun no matter where you are. ⁓ You can, you know, still have a good time. Yeah, you may have some challenges at the back, know, course crowding, stuff like that, but it doesn't matter. You're at Disney, you're still having fun, there's characters on course, you know, it's a good time. speaker-1: 100%. We say that just have fun. Yeah. ⁓ okay. What have you learned about yourself? Right? A hundred races, 11 years, you've done some world majors, right? What have you learned about yourself in all of this? speaker-2: Like I said, think that you can do hard things. I don't think I ever would have imagined 11 years ago that I would have done 100, or let alone world majors or any of that stuff. I wasn't a runner before Run Disney, and now I run all the time. It's kind of crazy to think about. I think a lot of people are like that, where they come into Run Disney and they weren't runners. And it turns them into something that they didn't think they could be. speaker-1: Yeah, absolutely. speaker-0: Do you have any core memories that mean a lot to you either from a race weekend or training? speaker-2: I think each weekend, each race kind of has its own thing. There's the costumes over the years that stand out. There's different races that were more challenging. Like you could go back to the 2020 marathon was that one that was cut because it was so hot. That was a tough one. There's been races where it rained and those kind of things. There's always moments throughout. It's hard to kind of pinpoint. I don't have a necessarily favorite race. ⁓ know, obviously my first marathon was a big deal, stuff like that. speaker-1: You kind of mentioned, you know, some of the hard things, right? We've gotten hit with weather pretty hard. had the half of a half, you know, like all of that kind of stuff. They just, you know, it comes with it, right? We always say like, expect something to go wrong. Like something is going like no race weekend that we've had yet has been perfect. You know what I mean? So is there anything like what's been the most difficult thing you've had to overcome? I might not even be a race weekend. It might just be during training. What's the most difficult thing you've had to overcome? speaker-2: So in 2025, my grandfather had passed away like the week, like two weeks before Marathon Weekend. And then I literally went to his funeral and flew out at night that same day to Marathon Weekend. that was a very tough and emotional, you know, kind of weekend. You know, we're a Disney family because of him, essentially. He would take my mom every... ⁓ spring break and her siblings to Disney and they'd camp at Four Wilderness and that was their thing growing up and then my mom, you know, kept that going with us and my first run Disney trip was actually his last Disney trip. So it was, that's kind of full circle kind of thing there that it was, that's why I think it was so emotional but I think it wasn't necessarily hard in terms of the training part but it was hard emotionally and I think that was kind of a probably the most the one that stands out the most. speaker-1: Is there any advice that you would give to someone who might similar situation or something, you know, equally as emotionally taxing, any advice that you would give? speaker-2: I obviously was toying with, well, do I change the trip? Do I do those kinds of things? I, what? And I think he obviously wouldn't have wanted me to do that, so that's why you keep that. ⁓ But just kind of learning to, yeah, there's gonna be the grief and the emotion, sadness, all those things. But enjoying yourself even in the moment of where it's tough is important. speaker-1: you know, ⁓ in this might've been you on that race. It seems like a lot of people run these races like in honor of, you know, someone that was important to them or whatever. And so I always try and keep that in mind on the race. Cause, ⁓ I've had races that were very difficult because I was going through something emotionally difficult. Right. ⁓ but I also have races that everything was going fine in my life at that moment, but I have to remember that somebody might be either going through something on in their life directly, or they might've just flown from a funeral. You know what mean? So we definitely try to keep that in mind. Thank you for your advice on this. speaker-0: Ryan, why do you continue to do Roy Disney after all of these races? speaker-2: It's the people. know we've talked about that already, it's basically I have friends all over the country and that's kind of our reunion point. We all come and enjoy the weekend together. We hang out, know, go to dinner, do those types of things and that Run Disney weekend is kind of, you know, all us coming together and having fun and seeing each other and it's a great time. speaker-1: What would today Ryan, right? Like the Ryan we're looking at right now through the screen, what would that Ryan say to Ryan who was standing in the corral at his first race 11 years ago? Right? What would today Ryan say? speaker-2: I think you would say you don't know what you're in for. You know, it's been quite the journey and you know being able to do so many different things throughout this 11 years. ⁓ It's crazy to think about. I never would have guessed, you know, at that first race where I would be today, but here we are. speaker-1: Erica and I, we're on the same page, Erica and I joke that if AJ and Erica from five years ago even looked at AJ and Erica today, be like, what the heck you did what? Are you kidding me? You ran a what? So yeah, we totally get that. speaker-0: Like you said, you don't realize how capable you are of doing these hard things. So you get up there and do them. Well, Ryan, we really appreciate you and all you do for this community of runners. Where can our friends find you and follow you? speaker-1: Yeah, for sure. speaker-2: Yeah, so the main spot would be Instagram Ryan on the Run with two N's because there's another Ryan on the Run that's not really active, but I couldn't get that handle. So that's why there's two N's. ⁓ But there, and then I'm also on YouTube, Ryan on the Run there as well. I am a travel agent, so you can find me. All my stuff is all, ⁓ all my bio and stuff is on Instagram. You can find everything there basically. That's probably the best spot. speaker-1: That's perfect. If we, if, if our friends, you know, if they're not already been, and they follow Ryan with two ends, ⁓ on the run and they follow that, like, what, what can we expect from you? I kind of teed up that you share the weather report, upcoming races, but that's, that's only four races a year. You know what I mean? Like, what can we expect throughout the year on your YouTube channel, on your Instagram, all of that. speaker-2: I share pretty much everything ⁓ from non-Disney travels. went to Alaska last year. That was a big thing I shared. Whatever I'm doing basically is going to be shared on there. You can see pretty much everything. speaker-1: That's awesome. This was super fun. Anything that we missed, right? Like ⁓ we had our list of questions, but we haven't met you yet in person and I expect fully to meet you at Marathon weekend this year. ⁓ Anything we missed, anything you want to talk about or ask or throw out there, anything we missed? speaker-2: No, think it was a good overview of my journey and everything that went along with that. was a pleasure to be here. speaker-1: ⁓ dude, we appreciate it. And we're, ⁓ we're so encouraged by, know, the advice you provided. love, you know, checking out, you know, the helpful tips and all that stuff.
