This episode is part of the series we call Rooted and Mature. We hope you come away with greater understanding of how God will accomplish his work through us as we work together toward the goal of seeing every people group reached. Josh, I'm with Josh again this week. We are, if you remember, we are working through the story of the that comes from the Bible. It's the narrative. And last week we were talking about how it's it's one complete story, a total story. And ⁓ of course, with the story, we have the setting, which was created, ⁓ the earth. We have the characters, which are God, of course, the most dominant character and most important character, and then he created. humans and angels and then demons rebelled and humans rebelled and we all rebelled and with every good story ⁓ there's there's a plot and the plot I mean we were we were talking about it lightly the other day when we were chatting, but I I really wanted to just dig into it a little bit more. To me the plot has always been it's about God's glory, right? It's ultimately at the end of the day, I think that's the purpose for humans beings. His creation was So that we could turn and give him glory ⁓ for what he had done for us. And of course, we humans, we instead sought our own got glory. We said, you know, why give God glory when we could be like God and we sought our own glory? And and instead of restarting the story again and saying, Okay, let's scratch that, you know, that was humans were were not did not accomplish my purposes and set of that, he the plot is is that he still wants us to give him glory. But now he has to redeem us, right? He has to w win us back or save us back from our own. And he's he's doing that through scripture. We see he's building in we saw that promise. Hey, I'm going to get you back. I'm going to send this one that will come to get you back, the deliverer, the redeemer, the savior. And he's he's working us through that story. And so we see the old testament is building towards this coming redeemer. Again, the plot of the story. When he gets us back, he wants us to fill the earth with his glory. So it it goes right back full circle. So if you remember last week we got through Kings. We were talking about how he his intention was always fill my earth with glory. We got through the Kings and we're in Psalms now. Where what what Psalm do you find that you want to run to first? Yeah, I think of a few. ⁓ the book of Psalms is a great mission book. You know, it's rarely seen as that. It's more than a hundred and seventy five times the book of Psalms refers to Israel being a light to the nations, this idea of why God using his people to be a light to the nations. And that's what we see. So I one I picked out here is Psalms forty six, ten, verse ten. Everyone knows this and we all know the first half is be still and know that I'm God. I see it all over you know, you go to somebody's house, they gotta they that yeah, that's that verse is somewhere, right? But What we miss when we miss the Bible as a mission story, when we miss the entire character to the plot to the this entire story, we miss it. Whenever we could just read the whole verse and it says, Be still and know that I'm God, I will be honored by every nation and I will be honored throughout the world. Well, that's in the same verse. That's verse ten. Why do we know that. Nobody knows that. So sometimes I tell people, you know, if you want to be really extra spiritual, just go to Hobby Lobby and just start marking it out and write the rest of the verse on the There you go. But That's not we're going for when we're doing this whole conversation about this. We just want to show what's God's word say about missions and what does that mean for us. It's funny because I I I watched you speak ⁓ a few months ago and you asked a big crowd of about two hundred. You said the beginning of that verse is be still and know that I'm God. Can anybody anybody in this crowd of two hundred quote me the rest of the verse? And it was like crickets chirping, right? Nobody knows the rest of the verse. And yet, man, that that's where we go and We're we're at fault for cherry picking out the parts we want and we ignore the greater part of the story, which is I'll be honored in every nation throughout the world. That's the plot. That's the story. That's the goal. All right. So Psalm sixty-seven is is an entire I we we debated on whether we were gonna share this entire thing. Let me just read the whole thing. ⁓ yeah. And then we'll go from there. I think this is such a great psalm. It says Psalm 67, verse 1, may God be merciful and bless us. May his face smile with favor upon us. May your ways be known throughout the earth. Your saving power among people everywhere. May the nations praise you, O God. Yes, all the nations praise you. Let the whole world sing for joy, because you govern the nations with justice and guide people, all the people of the world. May the nations praise you, O God. Yes, all the nations praise you. Then the earth will yield its harvest, ⁓ God, ⁓ God will richly bless us. Yes, God will bless us, and the people all over the world will fear him. Again, that's classic, dude. That is that's the plot of the story right there. That's that's right in middle of Psalms. Right. We miss it all. Right. Right about dead center of your bottle, right? Halfway through. Okay. Exactly. So any thoughts or comments on that? Well, it's just point proven. Psalms is a great missions book where we see it over and over again. If you were just take a highlighter and go through the book of Psalms and every time you saw whole earth nations, yeah, you'd be filling up half of the book of Psalms. Yeah, you know, it's funny because ⁓ David wanted to build that temple, just a little sidebar here. David wanted to build that temple, and of course God told him, No, I'm gonna let your son do it. But if you even look at when they built that temple, he says this will be a temple for The nations. This is supposed to be a gathering place for the nations. It wasn't it wasn't just something for the Jewish nation or for the line of David. It was it was actually a a a place for the nations. And ⁓ that's pretty it's it's pretty obvious that he continues on with this theme. Okay. So Yeah, we could go into a book of Psalms more and more and more, but like you said, what, a hundred and seventy times we could go in, right? Go ahead. Next, where are you looking next? Well, I think you wanted to add ⁓ a passage in Isaiah that we could have added At the very beginning of all of this conversation, right out of the gate, like what is the purpose in ⁓ for the creation of man? And we were looking at I believe it was Isaiah one. ⁓ Isaiah 11 9. Yeah. It says again, he's is he's giving this prophecy of things to come, and he's saying, Out of the line of David's gonna come the shoot, and he goes on through the prophecy, but 11 9 says, so that the earth will be filled with. with people who know the Lord. Again, that was right there at the very beginning. ⁓ you know, fill the earth, Adam, Eve, you got one job. Fill it up. And ⁓ so that I can have glory from from people everywhere. And of course, it's still his his goal here. So Isaiah 49 verse 6 says what? Yeah, just as we're getting to the end of the old testament, it says you will do more than restore the people of Israel to me. I'll make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring salvation to the ends of the earth. This wasn't just like you said, this temple and all everything God wanted for just Israel. It was for the nations and for the world. I think every nation needs to recognize that as ⁓ as they get blessed. Quite often when when a nation starts to get blessed, they they start to think Well, this is for our nation and yeah, it's for our time. It's our glory. And again, just like there he's saying, Mm, use those blessings to fill the earth for my glory. It's just that was the the purpose of the Israel nation. I believe it's America has had its moment of wealth and prosperity and blessing financially and all those things. And we have used that just like Europe used it before us. But I think that, you know, that's the Yeah, how God intended it. Yeah, just the last scripture of the Old Testament we'll hit just so we can keep going quickly and then we'll get into the New Testament. So I'm looking at Malachi one eleven. But my name is honored by people of other nations from morning till night, all around the world. They offer sweet incense and pure offering in honor of my name. For my name is great among the nations, says the Lord. So yeah, that's we could see it from beginning of the Old Testament to the end of the Old Testament. This is the plot. This is the plan. Yep. Beginning to literally the last, the last book in the Old Testament, one plot, one goal. All right. We get to the New Testament. I suspect that the the plot will continue on, but let's find out. Yeah, we have this one page in our Bibles that's blank. It says the New Testament just represents four hundred years of science, right? Like I guess it could be a little bit thicker of a page to kind of show us, but no, it's just showing us God was not speaking through prophets or anything and really what was happening, the world was just anxiously and all creation was anxiously waiting for the Messiah to be born. And we know that because the next four books of the ⁓ New Testament tell us exactly What happens? The Son of God, Jesus Christ is born, the Messiah. Yeah. And you know, I often wonder why God was silent for so long there. And I I have to believe it's because because the people of the earth weren't actually fulfilling their purposes. You know, I mean they were they were at this point, the world was in total chaos. Things were had completely come off the rails. They were they were doing their own thing. And ⁓ he kind of just leaves them to their own demise for these four hundred years. But again, that He never abandons his purpose. I will redeem you. I will restore this relationship. I will get you back so that you can be in a right position to be able to accomplish my purpose, which is to give me glory. And then of course we kick right off with the the probably the most famous verse in the Bible. Yeah. John three sixteen. Hit it. Man, does this have a missions ⁓ focus or is it what is going on here? And this is what it says. John three sixteen, but this is how God Love the world. He gave his only son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. And seventeen. God sent his son into the world, not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. Man, I see a lot of world. World in there. Yeah. Jesus didn't just come for you and me, but for the entire world. And yeah, he tells his disciples over and over again that's what he's come to do. It's to restore all people, all the way from Genesis 3. Sin enters the world, this is what Jesus came to save us from. Yeah, you know it's funny 'cause I'm like everybody else, right? I'm really happy with my salvation. Like that's really important to me and I'm really glad for it and thankful for it and all those things. But yet Jesus didn't just die for me. That's you know, it I'm turns out I'm not the the main character in the story, you know. But in fact, he's the main character. But his his purpose is for the world to have that access to to God and to his glory again. So where do we go from here? Well, Jesus, we know, fulfilled all the prophets about who the Messiah would be. He lived a perfect life, and some of the things he said in this ministry were things like Matthew twenty four, fourteen. Coming to the end of his ministry, he said twenty four, fourteen And the good news about the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world. So that All nations will hear it and then the end will come. Well, that's a controversial verse in some ways. Yeah, sure. Like what ⁓ what is he saying here? Does he saying after every single people group, yeah, then it's gonna happen. Well, sure that could be what's happening. God could also use the rocks to reach the unreach people groups today. Like that's what happened. Jesus was on the holy week, right coming in and the Pharisee says, Why are they shouting Hosanna to you? He's like, Well, if they don't, the rocks will. Right. And so, yeah, God's gonna do it. That We don't have to say, Well, that means if we have to do it right now, then the next day Jesus' gonna come. It's also gonna come like a thief in the night. Right. I haven't ever seen any scripture that says God's dependent on our our abilities or our obedience. In fact that would be that would be a poor plan and ⁓ we know he doesn't have a poor plan. Right. But the point of the scripture is what? He wants all nations, the whole world, he wants them all to hear. is good news. That's the point of the scripture. All right. So then of course you got Matthew twenty eight. Eighteen to twenty. This is like I mean, this is kind of your or my verse. If you're if you're in missions, global missions, this is this is the bread and butter preaching verses, right? So read it up for us. Well it's interesting then it this is after Jesus' resurrection. He was around for forty days on earth. Right. What did he talk about? And that's what we're gonna read these next five verses are what he talked about. And it was what we call the Great Commission statements. Not the great suggestion to this group of people. Here's the Great Commission that he says. So we'll just read this one, Matthew 28, 18 through 20. Jesus came and told his disciples, I have been given all authority on heaven and on earth, therefore go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this. I'm with you always, even to the ends of the age. I was laughing the other day. My daughter was sitting in a church service listening to a pastor preach on this this very passage. And in classic form, his points were: go, make disciples, baptize, teach. And she was like He literally skipped over the all nations part, Dad. Didn't even mention it. It's like he read it, but then as soon as he started preaching, he missed the all nations part. And that's she was she was chuckling. She said, I knew you would you would have been sitting there growling in your chick in your in your chair if you would have been sitting there, Dad. And ⁓ the reality is this is we all forget. We all forget that that this is not for us, this is for the nations. That was the commission. Yep, go make disciples, teach, baptize, all those things. Where? Out there. All nations. All nations. Yeah, that's so good. I love too that he says, I'm going with you. You know, I we're not taking God anywhere. God takes us to where he's at already, right? Yeah, but but ⁓ he we're going we're going with him where he's going. And that to me is a huge encouragement because I've been to some crazy places on this earth. And I've never felt like I was there alone. So no, that's so good. All right. Well, just as we keep going through all the Great Commission passages, Jesus actually talks about this five different times. So Mark 16, 15, he told them, Go into the world and preach the good news to everyone. That's pretty clear to me. It's it's the same, yeah. It's almost like he thinks this is important, you know, just kind of hitting it all all the way through. Interesting because the gospels You know, they don't always have a repeat of every of everything that Jesus said. Yeah. But this is one thing that it seems like they all get. Yeah, they all got the end. They all got the end. But in harmony, right? Yeah. Exactly. All right. What's next? Well, here in Luke, when Luke records it, and actually I love this verse. I think it actually summarized the entire Bible really well. And you can either agree or disagree with me here. So Luke twenty four. 44. Then he said, When I was with you before, I told you that everything written about me and the law of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their mind to the scriptures and he said, Yes, it was written long ago that the Messiah must suffer and die and rise again from the dead on the third day. Like yes, the whole Bible was about the Messiah coming to restore us. Right. Then he says, It is also written that this message would be proclaimed in authority of his name of all the nations, beginning in Jerusalem, there is forgiveness of sins for all who repent. There we see the two things God was communicating in his word. Like his love letter to the people is what some people call the Bible, right? Like this restoration from sin. Like I'm doing this through my son Jesus, but also do what I've always wanted. Right. Restore everyone to me. Right. Worshippers from all over the globe. It's crazy because yeah, right there he's saying, I did what I did. I told you I was gonna do. Came, died, rose again on the third day. Now go do what I've asked you to do. Yeah. Preach this to all nations. I love it. That's that's beautiful. Yeah, and then John's recording is in John twenty, twenty-one, and again he said, Peace be with you, as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you. And again, you know, it's this concept of him going with us, him giving he's got the authority and he's giving us peace. I think, you know, just in my own testimony, Josh, I I really sensed early on that this was God's purpose and that I should be involved in it. I I gotta say, the biggest barrier, if I were being dead honest to to me being reluctant to join in this great commission. was was a nervousness that somehow or another I was gonna get into something that wasn't gonna work out. And yet here we have all these promises. I think he anticipated that and all these promises that I have the power, I have the authority, I'm going with you, and I will give you peace in that process. And so I have been in some some sketchy situations before where where I was nervous, but I remember sensing that piece of I'm out here in the middle of nowhere. Nobody else knows what's going on right now except for my wife and myself and we're standing here in a hot, sticky situation with some some shady characters, and then just remembering, I'm with you. I'm I'm right here with you. I can give you peace. I c I'm looking after you. I hear you. I care about you. You're my my sh you're my sheep, you know. And ⁓ just all those reassurances. It was a cool it's it's just been a cool experience to To live out these verses and and experience those things. So, Acts 1 8. Yeah. He wraps it up here. This is his the fifth time he's mentioned it. ⁓ he says, But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes to you, and you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere, in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Again, just that whole idea. It's always about moving out. I love it. Yeah, I mean this this gives us the roadmap for early church and the whole book acts of how the gospel goes out in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria. But I love verse nine through eleven. It's literally what happens next in the story. After Jesus said this, he was taken up into a cloud. While they were watching him, they could no longer see him, so they strained to see him rising into heaven. Two white robed men suddenly stood among them, men of Galilee. They said, Why are you standing here and staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken up from you into heaven, but in the same way ⁓ he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go. They're just standing here like, what are you guys still doing here? He told you what to do. Yep. And he's gonna be coming back. And what's cool is, I mean, if you we won't go into all the Acts passages, but if you watch after that, you had these scared cowards huddled up in a room, locked doors, you know, freaked out. ⁓ you have Peter who was, I mean The classic betrayer, you know, scared to death by a few people that said, Hey, weren't you one of Jesus' friends? And he's like, ⁓ heck no. You know, he's like literally like, I don't know what his curse was, but he's somehow or another, he's cursing words and you know, saying, No, no, no, not me, not me, right? And ⁓ and yet then immediately following this, they get busy. They get they get after it. I think it's a cool time in the church history because it's It's the first time er in a long time that God's people are actually saying, We need to be filling the earth with his glory. Let's go. And if you if you track that through, they go eventually up to Europe. ⁓ you know, legend has it or history has it. They end up down in India. I mean, they're just all over Africa. I mean, it's amazing to see where they take off to ⁓ after Acts 18. Yeah, it goes Jerusalem where the day of Pentecost happens and then these disciples are starting to speak languages from all these people that are coming in. And so there it starts in Jerusalem. This and Peter stands up and says, Hey, these guys aren't drunk. They're actually speaking your language and telling you that you crucified the Messiah. But you can repent and believe in what? Five thousand people are saved that day. Then what happens in like Acts seven? Stephen is stoned and persecution spreads the church. God uses persecution To spread his church, and that's what you were saying. Like it's just all over the known world at that time. It's pretty exciting. It's kind of scary. It actually took persecution for them to get busy, but it it did get busy nonetheless, you know, and and they get get rolling out there. All right. So we get into Romans. Paul writes Romans. Yeah, he was named Saul, was at the stoning of Stephen. Right. Gets converted as he's about to go. persecute other Christians, gets saved and is converted, and he's like, Yeah, ⁓ I'm in. How do we do this thing? He becomes like the greatest missionary of all time, I would say. You know. And so what we see in like Romans 1020, maybe we'll come back to the other passage in a second. 1020. ⁓ I'm sorry. Fifteen twenty. My ambition has always been to preach the good news where the name of Christ has never been heard. Rather than where a church has already been started by someone else. Again, his goal is saying, where's it not? Yeah. Where's okay, there's a church there. Where where is there not a church? Where what's the next step in this process? He caught that vision of every tribe, every nation, every ton, everywhere, you know, and ⁓ he's going going at it full speed ahead. Yeah, I wonder if this is a good place to take a quick pause and just ask the question like, so this was two thousand years ago. Paul's saying my ambition is to go where the good news is not yet. So now we ask the question, where is it not now? Right? Still a third of the world's people groups are unreached. Yeah, you see all those statistics out there, and there's lots of ways you can look at it, whether it be by Bible translation and access to God's Word, or whether it be by church or two percent believers and all these different things, but at the end of the day. I think that statistics says a lot that you just quoted. A third of the world has no access to God's word, ⁓ no no copy of God's word in their language, ⁓ no no church down at the local street corner, no Christian radio station playing, no ⁓ Bible tracts being handed out, no no one stand there with a sign repent. You know, no nothing. They got nothing. Nothing. And ⁓ that's just heartbreaking that again what started off so strong and with such fervor, we see those those disciples, those early apostles spreading and going and the church just taking off. We got stalled out somewhere, I think, you know, and and we haven't been able to it seems like population has grown faster than the church has grown. And ⁓ people have spread out faster than we can catch up to ⁓ right? And so we still haven't worked at it. We still have a lot of work to do and we need to get we need to get busy doing it. Okay. Yeah, maybe let's go ahead and go to the book of Revelation just as this all ends. How's this story conclude? so we look at the book of Revelation, and yeah, John has this vision, and this is what he says in Revelation 5-9. And they sang a new song with these words You are worthy to take the scroll and break its seal and open it, for you were slaughtered, and your blood has ransomed people for God from every tribe, language, and people and nation, and you have caused them to become a kingdom of priests for our God, and they will reign on the earth. Again, he will build his church, right? He promised that to Peter. He said, I will build my church. This will happen, it will be global. It's going and and we see here in Revelation, he's saying it's gonna come to an end in this way. I love ⁓ the next just flip over there, two two pages Revelation seven or one page Revelation seven, nine and ten, where he says, And after this I saw a vast crowd, too great to count from every nation and tribe and people and language standing in front of the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes and held palm branches in their hands, and they were shouting with the Mountish show, Salvation comes from God who sits on the throne of the Lamb. So conclusion, as we kind of had run through and guys, we we have taken a a really quick look at at the story. ⁓ really hit I mean if you we were kind of in some ways reading, you know, chapter headings and the last sentence, you know, the of the Bible to try to track this along. But as we walk through that, we have seen that his purpose from beginning to end was to fill the earth with people who would give him the glory he is he is due. And that is his that is his goal. And that's his goal for even restoring us and saving us is to accomplish his work Which is to fill the earth. So what does that mean? Yeah, maybe I'll read this Romans ten ⁓ passage because what we see is God is faithful. We see that all throughout the scripture. God's gonna do what he says he's gonna do. Right. And it says at the end of God's word that there's gonna be representatives from every people group there around. So he's gonna do it. So what does that mean for us for us listening? And I love Romans ten, thirteen through fifteen. Like this is Not our idea. This is what God was saying, for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they, the unreached people of the world, call on him to save them unless they believe in him? How can they believe in him if they've never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That's why the scriptures say, How beautiful are the feet of the messengers who bring the good news. So our options are God's gonna do it, so we can Be involved. Right. Or we can sit on the sidelines. Right. And how we be involved is by going or sending. Verse 15 of Romans 10. All right. So let's just talk. Let's give some a little call to action here. If they were gonna go, what does that look like? Yeah, I mean, there there might be people listening to this podcast and just saying, Wow, I I didn't know this is what God's will was. That that was actually me in college. I was getting a worst parts degree and I heard A similar what a worship arts. For a church. And I heard that yeah, God's heart is for us to know him and make him known. And it's similar to this. So I dropped out of school the next week. ⁓ that might be it's a little radical, right? But that's what it meant for me to to go and be involved. And so maybe people go on a a short term trip, on a mission trip, just to see like what does that mean for me to be a goer or sender. But really Go or you are a great example of it. You're you and your family as you guys went to a people group. Right. You did the thing. I was a nurse in the emergency room and same thing. Got challenged with the idea that there are unreached people groups out there. And and according to God's word, that shouldn't that shouldn't be existing in twenty you know, twenty twenty or tw two thousand, right? That shouldn't happen. Yeah. 'Cause that that's that's not his plan. And so I wanted to get involved in the plan and so same thing. I just had a great job. doing living the American dream and it just was not it's not God's dream. And I wanted to be on board with God's dream. And so so we got involved and we're able to go to one of those unreached people groups. So that's the idea of going. Now ⁓ I I I just want to take a second here. If if that sounds like a you know like a really big like whoa that's crazy. I I don't know you know that's like a ⁓ it worked out for Josh and it worked out for Keith but will that work out for me? I will say this, we do have a lot of short-term trips, and ⁓ we can post a link there. We have a lot of short-term trips where you can go and actually get a look at at what it would look like. And I'll just tell you from from my own experience, and I know you've experienced the same thing. I always thought that missionaries were like some kind of superhero. And the short-term trip, if I learned anything from that, it would be that ⁓ missionaries or ministers overseas, cross-cultural ministers. Are really just normal people. They're people who ⁓ are just cruise along trying to do what God wants them to do. He they're just volunteers. ⁓ they wouldn't necessarily be the ones that you know you would think a sports team would not pick them. They would not be the star athletes, but they're just normal people. So, man, a short-term trip is a great way to to get to know some of those folks that are out there and find out if it's something that that you could do or not. Okay, so that's going. Long term, short term, what about sending? What's that look like? Yeah, I I think of a few things. ⁓ the one we all think of is sending through prayer and giving financially. So man, praying for our missionaries and praying for the work that's happening right now, praying for the unrespeople groups in the world. There's an app that you can get, unrespeople groups, and they'll just tell you what people are to pray for that day. There's like great resources like that out there. ⁓ and giving, obviously, it takes money to do these things, and so supporting a missionary that's involved in cross cultural planting of churches among unreached people groups. Like that should be our main ambition. Right. Right. Yeah. I think one more way and I I just want to emphasize this. We're from Florida, the retirement capital of the world, right? And ⁓ I just I think of so much brain capital that's out there and experienced capital that's sitting retired. I just want to encourage you too to even think about maybe I could be a sender and volunteer five hours, twenty hours, ⁓ use my historical experience of being an accountant or a doctor or ⁓ you know a builder or whatever, all these experienced people sitting around ⁓ that would would say I'm gonna use that to help others. I c I'm not gonna go learn a language. I'm not gonna be able to translate and I don't have enough gas in the tank still to do that. But man, I could I could be a sender by like you said, giving, praying or volunteering. Yeah exactly. And jumping in and getting my feet wet and using some of my life experience to to help those that are that are out there actually, you know, doing the translation or whatever. So Yeah, and we'll leave some links there on the bottom of this podcast also for those of you that just might want to volunteer a few hours here and there to get involved in God's story and what he's doing and how he's building this church.
