Dalton Audio: Welcome back to the RDTFM podcast where we meet at the intersection of golf, beer, and life as a CPA. You may be wondering where that exists, and it is right down the freaking middle. we got a good show for you today. we'll catch up on life and golf. And we've got our inaugural approach section that we'll do today, where Chad will pitch us a question that we'll kind of talk through. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Welcome back to the RDTFM podcast where we meet at the intersection of golf beer and life as a CPA. You may be wondering where that exists, and it is right down the freaking middle. we got a a good show for you today. we'll catch up on life and golf, and we've got our inaugural approach section that we'll do today where Chad will pitch us a question that we'll kind of talk through. before we get into that any of that, we do have one legal disclaimer here that we got to read. the three of us are CPAs, but what we're talking about here is general discussion, not tax accounting, legal or financial advice. A lot of this stuff can get extremely technical and depends on your specific circumstances. So talk to your own CPA or advisor before actually doing anything based on what you hear here. Basically, don't listen to anything we say. All right. Dalton Audio: before we get into that any of that, we do have one legal disclaimer here that we got to read. the three of us are CPAs, but what we're talking about here is general discussion, not tax accounting, legal or financial advice. A lot of this stuff can get extremely technical and depends on your specific circumstances. So talk to your own CPA or advisor before actually doing anything based on what you hear here. Basically, don't listen to anything we say. All right. with that out of the way, first things first, let's pop that top. So grab your beers, guys. and let's get into these. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: with that out of the way, first things first, let's pop that top. So grab your beers, guys. and let's get into these. Chris, what are you working with tonight? All Dalton Audio: Chris, what are you working with tonight? Chris Audio: All right, I got a focal banger, which is a great name for a beer, and it it's a focal banger. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: right. I got a focal banger, which is a great name for a beer. And what? It is it's a focal banger. Dalton Audio: Okay. Chad Audio: So what? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Focal okay. Yeah, it's a focal banger. Yep. the alchemist from Vermont, and it is seven seven percent ABV. Okay. Nice. Chad, what do you got over there? Chad Audio: Okay, okay. Area. There we go. Chris Audio: Yeah, it's a focal banger. Yep. the Alchemist from Vermont and it is seven seven percent A B B. Right on the button. Dalton Audio: Okay. Nice. Chad, what do you got over there? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So I've got something called Nightmare Confetti, which I think is a fantastic, fantastic name. I'd I would love to know. I promise there's a story behind it, but I don't I couldn't begin to guess what that is. So this is a it's a double IPA from Cigar City Brewing down in Tampa. And that happens to be the the brewery that my two two of my favorite IPAs come from. Chad Audio: So I've got something called Nightmare Confetti, which I think is a fantastic, fantastic name. And that happens to be the the brewery that my two two of my favorite IPAs come from. Dalton Audio: Okay. Great name. Chris Audio: That's a good one. Chad Audio: Highly, like the stick game, whatever. We don't have it in Kansas, but and and Florida man. Florida Man is a it's an absolute banger. So excited to try this because I already love the the brewery, so Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Highly, like the stick game, whatever. We don't have it in Kansas, but and and Florida man. Florida man is a it's an absolute banger. So excited to try this because I already love the the brewery, so Dalton Audio: Nice. I've got I brewery X. That's a local brewery brewery out of Anaheim. I when I first picked it up, I really just picked up double hazy IPA and I was like, beautiful. And then I realized it says novelty and marshmallow on it. And I was like, that's weird. And it's got like a bunny. That's yeah, that that that's that's a lot going on. And so I looked at the ingredients and sure enough it has marshmallow in it. And the first taste was unique. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Nice. I've got I brewery X, that's a a local brewery brewery out of Anaheim. I when I first picked it up, I really just picked up double hazy IPA and I was like, beautiful. And so I looked at the ingredients and sure enough it has marshmallow in it. And the first taste was unique. Chad Audio: Okay. Dalton Audio: so we'll see how this one plays out. This may be our our contender. And the rough thing is I bought a four-pack. So that was maybe mistake on me. But we'll we'll see. Maybe, maybe yeah, first sip was was an adventure, but we'll we'll we'll go we'll go from there. all right, let's get head over to our scorecard. That's our our kind of update, what we've been playing, life update, anything going on, highs, lows, everything in between. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: so we'll see how this one plays out. This may be our our contender. And the rough thing is I bought a four pack. So that was maybe a mistake on me. We'll we'll see. Maybe first sip was we're not supposed to okay. Wasn't adventure, but we'll we'll we'll go we'll go from there. all right, let's get head over to our scorecard. That's our our kind of update, what we've been playing, life update, anything going on, highs, lows, everything in between. Chris Audio: Yeah, let's get weird. Chad Audio: Sure. we're not supposed to okay. I already jumped again. Dalton Audio: Chad, how about you? What's the what's the last week or so look like for you? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Chad, how about you? What's the what's last week or so looked like for you? Well, I took my first golf lesson ever this weekend. So I've I'm almost 50. I've been off and on playing golf since I was 18, I guess, and never once had anybody who knows what they're talking about tell me all the all the weird things that I do when I swing a club, which is apparently a lot. So that was Chad Audio: Well, I took my first golf lesson ever this weekend. So I've I'm almost fifty. I've been off and on playing golf since I was eighteen, I guess, and never once had anybody who knows what they're talking about tell me all the all the weird things that I do when I swing a club, which is apparently a lot. So that was Dalton Audio: Okay. Chad Audio: that was really cool. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: That was really cool. I I enjoy being coached, so it's kind of nice to do to do that and try to try to learn some stuff. you can probably imagine after after having wholesale changes to your attempted to your swing. I I played yesterday, the day after the lesson, and and woof. Chad Audio: I I enjoy being coached, so it's kind of nice to do to do that and try to try to learn some stuff. you can probably imagine after after having wholesale changes to your attempted to your swing. I I played yesterday, the day after the lesson, and and woof. Chris Audio: Ha ha ha. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: There was there was some good times, there was there was some bad times. It's it's it's kinda funny. Like you'll you'll get the feel of the new what the new correct swing is supposed to to do and you're like, Okay, yeah, I just I just kinda yanked that one a little too much. I just kinda need to learn what I'm what I'm doing with it now and then sometimes like you know, hit a tee shot and I'm like, here's this asshole again. That was I thought we were trying to get rid of that, but Chad Audio: There was some bad times. It's it's it's kind of funny. Like you'll you'll get the feel of the new what the new correct swing is supposed to to do. And you're like, okay, yeah, I just I just kinda yanked that one a little too much. I just kind of need to learn what I'm what I'm doing with it now. And then sometimes like you know, hit a t shot and I'm like, here's this asshole again. That was I thought we were trying to get rid of that, but so it so I I I'm told that it's a long Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: so it so I I I'm told that it's a long a long road and not to get discouraged, which I didn't do very good on that second part. driving driving home. I was like, you what, maybe you just suck and you're gonna suck forever and all that that's all there is to it. But so that that was that was that was the big event for me and and I think we'll we'll take a week off here and then and then Chad Audio: a long road and not to get discouraged, which I didn't do very good on that second part. driving driving home. I was like, you know, maybe you just suck and you're gonna suck forever. And all that that's all there is to it. But so that that was that was that was the big event for me and and I think we'll we'll take a week off here and then and then Dalton Audio: Ha ha ha. Chad Audio: hit it again. So I'm kind of excited to keep Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: hit it again. So I'm kind of excited to keep keep hammering at it and and see if I can get to something a little more respectable than than the mess that I've been throwing out there the last few years. So it's fun. It's fun. And it's it's it's hopefully it ends up making making the the golf make game more enjoyable to me. If not, we'll just keep being the vibes guy. That's fine too. So yeah. Yeah you what you describing your swing process. I don't I don't remember which you guys sent it. Chad Audio: keep hammering at it and and see if I can get to something a little more respectable than than the mess that I've been throwing out there the last few years. So it's fun. It's fun and it's it's it's hopefully it ends up making making the the golf make game more enjoyable to me. If not, we'll just keep being the vibes guy. That's fine too. So so Dalton Audio: Yeah, you what you describing your swing process. I don't I don't remember which of you guys sent it out to our group chat, but it was that that segment where it's like how many of how many shots does a pro hit where they're like, that was perfect in a typical round, right? Min Moo Li was like one, maybe. Most of them seem like it was like four, right? and that was a big confidence booster, right? It's like, okay, if I'm out there thinking like I'm gonna hit every shot exactly what I think is right, it's like that's not Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: out to our group chat, but it was that that segment where it's like how many how many shots does a pro hit where they're like, that was perfect. In a typical round, right? Min Moon Li was like one, maybe. Yeah. Most of them seem like it was like four, right? man, that was a big confidence booster, right? It's like, okay, if I'm out there thinking like I'm gonna hit every shot exactly what I think is right. It's like that's not Chad Audio: Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: that's not happening, right? But it's it's maybe, maybe two or three of those around plus the bad ones just become less bad, I think. That's maybe the Dalton Audio: That's not happening, right? But it's it's maybe, maybe two or three of those around plus the bad ones just become less bad, I think. That's maybe the that's that's where the needle's moving. It's not more perfect shots, it's it's less horrendous shots. just the consistency. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: That's that's where the needle's moving. It's not more perfect shots, it's it's less horrendous shots. yeah, I think that's the Chris Audio: Mm-hmm. Chad Audio: Right. Yeah, I think that's the deal. When like when when Min Woo says I hit one perfect shot around, like the the other, you know, sixty-eight that he hits that day are like a groove high or something. Like it's not he's he's he's not spraying it Oscar Bravo like I am, you know, four times around. So Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: deal. When like when when Min Wu says I hit one perfect shot around, like the the other, you know, sixty-eight that he hits that day are like a groove high or something. Like it's not he's he's he's not spraying it Oscar Bravo like I am, you know, four times around. So Dalton Audio: Yeah. Right. Right. Chad Audio: it's it's everything is relative, I think. But yeah, I mean it's I I I I would agree that there's not Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Yeah, it's it's everything is relative, I think. But yeah, I mean it's I I I I would agree that there's not I I I think all you're trying to do is get back to having your bad shots still be playable and and things that aren't just like absolutely devastating. I think that's the next for people my level, that's the next step is just not having six penalty strokes around and and things like that, you know. So which which that's j that just comes down to Chad Audio: I I I think all you're trying to do is get back to having your bad shots still be playable and and things that aren't just like absolutely devastating. I think that's the next for people my level, that's the next step is just not having six penalty strokes around and and things like that, you know. So which which that's j that just comes down to Dalton Audio: Yeah. Chad Audio: having your like bringing your bad shots in a little bit and not and not what they are doing now. So yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: having your like bringing your bad shots in a little bit and not and not what they are doing now. So yeah. Yeah. Dalton Audio: Yeah. Right. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So what's like one or two things that the the guy had Chris Audio: So what's like one or two things that the the guy had you work? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: you working on? lots of stuff in the setup. The grip made my made my grip way stronger. and I had I had been I had moved to like a really weak grip because I thought that's you know, I knew I had club ed issues at Impex, so I was trying to I thought that's what would Chad Audio: lots of stuff in the setup. The grip made my made my grip way stronger. and I had I had been I had moved to like a really weak grip because I thought that's you know, I knew I had club ed issues at impact, so I was trying to I thought that's what would fix it because I'm an accountant and not a golf coach. So he so he's he strengthened that a lot, which that right away is Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: fix it because I'm an accountant and not a golf coach. So he so he's he strengthened that a lot, which that right away is like that takes some getting used to. That's a that's a wildly different yeah set, you know, feeling at address than what I what I've been doing for a couple of decades. So that's the other problem is is the flaws in my swing have have been marinating wrong for, you know, a couple of decades. So it's gonna take some time. But Chad Audio: Like that takes some getting used to. That's a that's a wildly different set, you know, feeling it addressed than what I what I've been doing for a couple decades. So that's the other problem is is the flaws in my swing have have been marinating wrong for, you know, a couple decades. So it's gonna take some time. But Dalton Audio: Yeah. Chad Audio: that's that's a big one. And then just trying to address club path. So from an out to end, so so doing drills to address Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: That's that's a big one. And then just trying to address club path. So from an out to end, so so doing drills to address you know, feeling like you're swinging at the first baseman and hitting it over second base kind of kind of thing, which that that's that's a a much different feel. You know, a lot of the you know, a lot of the training aids like you know, this like like Chad Audio: you know, feeling like you're swinging at the first baseman and hitting it over second base kind of kind of thing, which that that's that's a a much different feel. You know, a lot of the you know, a lot of the training aids like you know this, like like Chris Audio: Mm-hmm. Chad Audio: using swing tools and training aids and things like that's a big like things with feedback. So like if you if you hit the bucket, it's your your swing path is wrong. So Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: using swing tools and training aids and things like that's a big like heck things with feedback. So like if you if you hit the bucket, it's your your swing path is wrong. So the first one he did, I was like, all right, this is I I've seen this. Don't be a jackass. Just just swing from the inside and like smoke to that range bucket right away. If swing one, I was like, damn it. Like, all right, we got a we got a ways to go. So settle in. Chad Audio: First one he did, I was like, All right, this is I've I've seen this. Don't be a jackass, just just swing from the inside and like smoke to that range bucket right away. Swing one, I was like, Damn it. Like, all right, we gotta we got a ways to go. So settle in. Dalton Audio: Ha ha. Chad Audio: But yeah, so I I'm I imagine he's just he's picking the low hanging fruit early on and gonna address those and then we'll get to some other stuff. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: But yeah, so I I'm I imagine he's just he's picking the low hanging fruit early on and gonna address those and then we'll get to some other stuff, Dalton Audio: Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: you know, as time progresses. But those those are the two the two main ones that he started out with. So Very cool. Yeah. Yeah. That's you, Chris. What's what's been going on in your world here? Chad Audio: you know, as time progresses. But those those are the two the two main ones that he started out with. So yeah. Yeah. That's you, Chris. What's what's been going on in your world here? Chris Audio: Very cool. well, I get this text message from my buddy. Well, as you know, let me back up, but as you know, we've got a tax deadline here in like a week. So, Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: well, I get this text message from my buddy. Well, as you know, maybe back up. But as you know, we've got a tax deadline here in like week. So Yeah, you know, we're we're slinging tax returns. So I get this text message from my buddy last night in in in the group chat. So the group chat, me, my buddy, our two wives. Okay. And before I could even go downstairs and be like, hey, you know, what do I think? Chris Audio: you know, we're we're slinging tax returns. So I get this text message from my buddy last night in in in the group chat. So the group chat, me, my buddy, our two wives. And he says, Hey, you want to play Chessy at eight o'clock tomorrow? And before I could even go downstairs and be like, Hey, you know, what do I think? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: My wife responds in the group chat and she says, Don't threaten him with a good time. So I'm I'm like, hell hell yes. Chris Audio: My wife responds in the group chat and she says, Don't threaten him with a good time. So I'm I'm like, hell hell, yes, we're Chad Audio: Mm-hmm. Dalton Audio: Ha ha. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: You're clear for takeoff here, right? And so I woke up early to do a tax return before going out to the golf course. And so I was like in a little bit of a mood because it didn't, you know, like that how that goes. So I was in a little bit of a mood when I got to the golf course. And I shit you not as I'm pulling into the gate, Chris Audio: clear for takeoff here, right? And so I woke up early to do a tax return before going out to the golf course. And so I was like in a little bit of a mood because it didn't, you know, like that how that goes. So I was in a little bit of a mood when I got to the golf course and I shit you not as I'm pulling into the gate. On comes regulate and the jam and mix tot totally changes the vibe. And I'm like, this is like this is like a sign, Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: on comes regulate and the jam index. Let's go total totally changes the vibe. And I'm like, this is like this is like a sign. Dalton Audio: Let's go. Chris Audio: right? so all that to say Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Right. so all about Stop, stop, Chad Audio: Well stop, stop, hold stop hold your story. T explain to everybody why regulate is like what's the regulate story because that's very key to understanding. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: hold stop, hold your story. T explain to everybody why regulate is like what's the regulate story, because that's very key to understanding. There really isn't a regulate story, so to speak. It's just I really like regulate, and so I've kind of pushed this on like every friend that I have at this point. And so now there's a a playlist, which is the Birdie Jams playlist, and there's two songs on it. It's regulate and the regulate jam and mix. Chris Audio: really isn't a regulate story, so to speak. It's just I really like regulate. And so I've kind of pushed this on like every friend that I have at this point. And so now there's a a playlist, which is the birdie jams playlist. And there's two songs on it. It's regulate and the regulate jam and mix. And so so what we do when the three when when we go out and we play, first T, the birdie the birdie jams playlist comes on. It goes off when you make a birdie. So like play hard. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: And so what we do when the three when when we go out and we play, first T, the birdie, the Birdie Jams playlist comes on. It goes off when you make a birdie. So like play hard, right? So anyway, so we get on the first T and my my the this guy who I've never met, who's friends with my buddy, you know, he's he's a really good player. My buddy's a really good player. I'm a five. They're both way better than me. And Chris Audio: So anyway, so we get on the first tee, and my my the this guy who I've never met, who's friends with my buddy, you know, he's he's a really good player. My buddy's a really good player. I'm a five. They're both way better than me. And my buddy's like, this other guy is gonna be giving you 11 shots. I'm like, 11 shots. I'm like, I'm a five. He's like, Well, he's giving you eleven. Like, I don't know how that works, but okay. And so they're do they're doing this like whole negotiation thing. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: My buddy's like, this other guy is gonna be giving you eleven shots. I'm like, eleven shots. I'm like, I'm I'm a five. He's like, Well, he's giving you eleven. Like, I don't know how that works, but okay. So they're do they're doing this like whole negotiation thing. Long story short, we're playing this game that I don't understand where if you make a birdie and it's a net birdie, so that's like favorable to me. But if you make a net birdie, you roll the dice and it's like ten bucks a point or something like that. No, not ten bucks a point. I think it was a dollar. Chris Audio: Long story short, we're playing this game that I don't understand where if you make a birdie and it's a net birdie, so that's like favorable to me. But if you make a net birdie, you roll the dice and it's like 10 bucks a point or something like that. No, not ten bucks a point. I think it was a dollar a point. So it's a dollar a point. If you roll doubles, you roll again. So we're like, we're rolling dice and the whole thing. Anyway, long story short, I played better. shot 79, which is for me if Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So it's a dollar a point. If you roll doubles, you roll again. So we're like we're rolling dice and the whole thing. Anyway, long story short, I played better. shot seventy-nine, which is okay. Dalton Audio: Okay. Chad Audio: Ooh. Chris Audio: So we Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So we tipped it out at Chichesse. Chichesi's hard, man. It's got like three inch per meter rough. It's like hard. Yeah. So seventy nine for me is like mediocre. but like my misses to like Chad's point five minutes ago. My misses are getting tighter with the driver, which is a good thing. Nice. yeah. Chris Audio: tipped it out. It's a Chessey. Chess's hard, man. They've got like three inch per meter rough. It's like hard. Yeah. So 79 for me is like mediocre. but like my misses to like Chad's point five minutes ago, my misses are getting tighter with the driver, which is a good thing. yeah. Dalton Audio: Yeah. Chris Audio: That so on and on top of that, I I sent you guys that thing, that Instagram reel. wife and kids were gone all weekend. So I was like doom scrolling, trying not to do tax returns. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: That so on and on top of that, I I sent you guys that thing, that Instagram reel. wife and kids were gone all weekend. So I was like doom scrolling, trying not to do tax returns. Dalton Audio: Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: If you're not familiar with Joseph Mayo, Joseph Mayo is like the short game guru. He's he's the dude now. And I was watching all these videos where he like says open the face at address and then you actually want to shut it on the way through. Like totally blew my mind. Chris Audio: If you're not familiar with Joseph Mayo, Joseph Mayo is like short game guru. He's he's the dude now. And I was watching all these videos where he like says open the face at a dress and then you actually want to shut it on the way through. Like totally blew my mind. So I'm out there in the bunker before we go play. Yeah, think about that one real hard for a minute. So it's just yeah, I'm tell dude, I'm telling you. I'm I'm telling you, man. Like all my whole entire life, it turns out I've been hitting bunker shots wrong. I had no idea. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So I'm out there in the bunker before we go play. Yeah, think about that one real hard. Yeah. I'm tell dude, I'm telling you. I'm I'm telling you, man. Like all my whole entire life, it turns out I've been hitting bunker shots wrong. I had no idea. Dalton Audio: I'm like how you move it wrong, yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: But I went out I went out into the practice bunker and I'm trying this with the, you know, it's it's a really weird notion. Open it wide up, try to shut it on the way through, and it comes out awesome. So take a look at that. It's worth a shot. Chris Audio: But I went out it I went out into the practice bunker and I'm trying this with the you know it's it's a really weird motion. Open it wide up, try to shut it on the way through, and it comes out awesome. So take a look at that. It's worth a shot, but it's it's like it's wild, it's totally counterintuitive. It's I don't know. Dude knows way more than I do, so worth a shot. So that's me. Dalton, what about you? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: But it's it's it's wild. It's totally counterintuitive. It's I don't know. Dude knows way more than I do, so worth a shot. So that's me. Dalton, what about you? Yeah, I got had that par three, nine hole course walking, made it through without getting hurt more. So that was like objective number one cleared. shot a eight over, so basically bogey each hole, had a birdie, a couple of pars, a couple of doubles, Dalton Audio: Yeah, I got had that par three, nine hole course walking, made it through without getting hurt more. So that was like objective number one cleared. shot a eight over, so basically bogey each hole, had a birdie, a couple of pars, couple of doubles. so not horrible. didn't hit a single green. The greens were like ten paces wide at their widest part. so just really tough to get, but stayed out of trouble, so that was good. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So not horrible. didn't hit a single green. The greens were like ten paces wide at their widest part. so just really tough to get, but stayed out of trouble. So that was good. yeah. So first first time back, that that went pretty darn well. The birdie was nice, right? To get one of those. It's like, okay, all right, that's that's good. and then we were gone this weekend, vacation, Labor Day long weekend, got out of town. So that was literally the only time I played was was that that nine hole. Dalton Audio: Yeah, so first first time back that that went pretty darn well. The birdie was nice, right? To get one of those. It's like, okay, all right, that's that's good. and then we were gone this weekend, vacation, Labor Day long weekend, got out of town. So that was literally the only time I played was was that that nine hole. and yeah, my I think my yardages were a little short, you know, they were probably probably playing close to 90. I was really trying to dial it back and like not not swing hard. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: And yeah, my y I think my yardages were a little short. You know, they were probably probably playing close to ninety. I was really trying to dial it back and like not not swing hard. Chris Audio: Back on the mendo. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: trying to show my age and not think I'm a twenty something year old. so I think they were probably hitting like what I should have. but every hole I was pretty much short. not not whole high. So but it's fine. So able to get up and down. Dalton Audio: trying to show my age and not think I'm a twenty something year old. so I think they were probably hitting like what I should have. but every hole I was pretty much short. not not whole high. So but it's fine, still able to get up and down. yeah, it felt great to get out there. And I'm like, all right, that's that's that's what we're that's what we're looking for. so hopefully more and more more and more of that as I as I heal up. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Yeah, it felt great to get out there. And I'm like, all right, that's that's that's what we're that's what we're looking for. so hopefully more and more more and more of that as I as I heal up. all right, so we got a new new section, new segment for for everyone. we're gonna kind of tee over to Chad here. we're calling it the approach, and what it is is it's a a scenario that we've seen that that we're gonna have one of us pitch, give us the facts that we need, no more, no less. Dalton Audio: All right, so we got a new new section, new segment for for everyone. we're gonna kind of tee over to Chad here. we're calling it the approach. And what it is is it's a a scenario that we've seen that that we're gonna have one of us pitch, give us the facts that we need, no more, no less. and then the three of us kind of tackle it. How would we approach addressing this this scenario? So Chad, we'll kick it over to and we'll kind of see what we got. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: and then the three of us kind of tackle it. How would we approach addressing this this scenario? So Chad, we'll kick it over to you and we'll kind of see what we got. Okay. So this is this is something we've actually worked through recently at our firm, and I'm and I'm obviously not disclosing names of of anybody involved, but I do a lot of work with construction in the construction industry and we had one one contractor who's been around Chad Audio: Okay. So this is this is something we've actually worked through recently at our firm and I'm and I'm obviously not disclosing names of of anybody involved, but I do a lot of work with construction in the construction industry and we had one one contractor who's been around for a while. This is a you know kind of like a second generation now operation. So not they're not new to the game. They Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: for a while. This is a you know kind of like a second generation now operation. So not they're not new to the game. They about a year ago I think hired a new controller and I don't know the circumstances. I don't know if they if if they claim to have a lot of knowledge of construction contracting or or not. I I I don't know anything about how that process went about. But what the the issue that they came to us with is, you know, we were showing a lot of profit. Chad Audio: about a year ago I think hired a new controller and I don't know the circumstances of the hire. I don't know if they if sh if they claim to have a lot of knowledge of construction contracting or or not. I I I don't know anything about how that process went about. But what the the issue that they came to us with is, you know, we were showing a lot of profit when we when we run our financials that we send to the bank, but we don't have any like we have no money. And they were they were they'd gotten into their line of credit quite a ways. So they were trying to figure out what's going on, you know, and and reaching out to us. Now obviously I'm you don't I'm not asking you the specifics of what what happens in there, but like when that's not really a unique scenario, I don't think it's Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: when we when we run our financials that we send to the bank, but we don't have any like we have no money and they were they were they had gotten into their line of credit quite a ways. So they were trying to figure out what's going on, you know, and and reaching out to us. Now obviously I'm you don't I'm not asking you the specifics of what what happens in there, but like when that's not really a unique scenario, I don't think it's Dalton Audio: Where's my money? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Where's my money? Yeah, Chad Audio: I think I yeah, yeah. So we're it says we're profitable. It doesn't look like it. So like when you I'm guessing this has come up for you guys and you guys do more, you know, more monthly accounting work and and th than I do, but when those kind of situations happen, what do you what what's kind of the first thing that you go to to look at to try to unpack and peel the onion away and figure out what what is going on? You know, is this Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: yeah. So where it says we're profitable. You know, is this Chad Audio: Is this just incompetence? Is this fraud? Is it we know what's what's what's the deal here? So where do where do you guys kind of start? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Is this just incompetence? Is this fraud? Is it we know what's what's what's the deal here? So where do where do you guys kind of start? Yeah, I fraud is definitely always a consideration, right? Like anytime you hear a business owner say, like, man, we're making a lot of money, but there's nothing less. It's like, okay, like that's we gotta we gotta look at that. the two areas I typically dig into are are debt servicing, right? Because that's money going out, that's not impacting the the profitability, quote unquote. and then the other one is like Dalton Audio: Yeah, I fraud is definitely always a consideration, right? Like anytime you hear a business owner say, like, man, we're making a lot of money, but there's nothing less. It's like, okay, like that's we gotta we gotta look at that. the two areas I typically dig into are are debt servicing, right? Because that's money going out, that's not impacting the the profitability, quote unquote. and then the other one is like the things that roll into owner or officer draw, health insurance, Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: The things that roll into owner or officer draw, health insurance, is is part of his pay or her pay just transferring funds out that isn't again not affecting profitability, but affecting cash flow. those are the two, I mean, non-deductible expenses, right? Is there a lot of like entertainment or are you buying like sports tickets or you know what I mean? That type of stuff. so that's Dalton Audio: is is part of his pay or her pay just transferring funds out that isn't again not affecting profitability but affecting cash flow those are the two I mean non-deductible expenses right is there a lot of like entertainment or are you buying like sports tickets or you know what I mean that type of stuff so that's those those are the kind of the areas that I queue into. I work with a lot of small businesses. A lot of them will be like they just use one card, which is horrific. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Those those are the kind of the areas that I queue into. I work with a lot of small businesses. A lot of them will be like, they just use one card, which is horrific. and so it's they think it's like, well, it's I'm making all this money, but there's nothing. It's like, well, yeah, we had to journal out like half of your credit card transactions because they were personal. so it's all those kinds of things. It but I would say like the main two debt service and then kind of the owner, owner draw comp type of stuff. Dalton Audio: and so it's they think it's like, well, it's I'm making all this money, but there's nothing it's like, well, yeah, we had to journal out like half of your credit card transactions because they were personal. so it's all those kinds of things. It but I would say like the main two debt service and then kind of the owner, owner draw comp type of stuff. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Yeah. Chris Audio: Yeah, so I would say that, you know, in businesses that are very project heavy, we see this a lot. And even more so if that business is project heavy and they have larger clients and like larger clients that have like accounts payable departments. Like I tell my clients all the time, you've got all these receivables, but the other end of those receivables is some like Fortune 500. And I promise you that those accounts payable departments are going to do whatever they're going to. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Yeah. So I I would say that, you know, in businesses that are very project heavy, we see this a lot. And even more so if that business is project heavy and they have larger clients and like larger clients that have like accounts payable departments. Like I tell my clients all the time you've got all these receivables, but the other end of those receivables is some like Fortune 500. And I promise you that those accounts payable departments are going to do whatever they're Do and they're gonna be super slow to pay you. And so, yeah, you got all this profit, but cash is going in like super slow and that whole thing. Yeah. so I I think the first thing is just understand the kind of business that you have. If you're a project-based business, then you should have some sort of an alternative funding source. If you're like a subscription-based business or retainer-based business, it's much easier. You're getting paid up front, you've got cash in the bank, it's great. If you're getting paid, you know, behind, then Chris Audio: Do and they're going to be super slow to pay you. And so, yeah, you got all this profit, but cash is going in like super slow and that whole thing. so I think the first thing is just understand the kind of business that you have. If you're a project-based business, then you should have some sort of an alternative funding source. If you're like a subscription-based business or retainer-based business, it's much easier. You're getting paid up front, you've got cash in the bank, it's great. You're getting paid, you know, behind, then. That's a problem. It's even bigger problem if your subcontractors that you're paying, you have to pay before you actually receive the funds. So you gotta look at that too. so that's that's the one thing. And then the other thing that we talk about with our clients a lot is most of them only ever look at the PL and their bank account to figure out how they're doing. So the f like when they come to us with these kind of problems, it's like, okay, well, how you know, has anybody ever walked you through a cash flow statement? No. Okay, well, let's start there. And Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: That's a problem. It's even bigger problem if your subcontractors that you're paying, you have to pay before you actually receive the funds. So you gotta look at that too. Yeah. so that's that's the one thing. And then the other thing that we talk about with our clients a lot is most of them only ever look at the PL and their bank account to figure out how they're doing. So the fr like when they come to us with these kind of problems, it's like, okay, well, how you know, has anybody ever walked you through a cash flow statement? No. Okay, well, let's start there. Dalton Audio: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: And right right to that cash flow from operations line. That's your most important number. What does that say? Okay, cool. Now we understand the cash flow from operations line. Have you ever looked at a balance sheet? No. Okay, let's talk about that. Right. So you gotta look at all three statements. And then what we also do is we look at our accounts receivable, we look at our accounts payable, the actual agings. And you know, between all of those, it's gonna tell you some sort of a story. And then, you know, hopefully close that game. Chris Audio: Right right to that cash flow from operations line. That's your most important number. What does that say? Okay, cool. Now we understand the cash flow from operations line. Have you ever looked at a balance sheet? No. Okay, let's talk about that. Right? So you got to look at all three statements. And then what we also do is we look at our accounts receivable, we look at our accounts payable, the actual agings. And you know, between all of those, it's going to tell you some sort of a story. And then, you know, hopefully close that Dalton Audio: Yeah. Chris Audio: that mental gap of yeah, like it says we're profitable, but where's the cash going? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: That mental gap of yeah, like it says we're profitable, but where's the cash going? That cash flow statement should really answer it. But just kind of going a level further and training them like here's how you have to look at your financials all the time, and here's the story that you need to tell yourself. So that's kind of how we approach it. on the fraud side, yeah, could be, but I like to take a take a different tact on that where people are inherently good, they're probably not stealing from you so long as you went through. Chris Audio: That cash flow statement should really answer it. But just kind of going a a level further and training them like here's how you have to look at your financials all the time, and here's the story that you need to tell yourself. So that's kind of how we approach it. on the fraud side, yeah, could be, but I like to take a take a different tact on that where people are inherently good, they're probably not stealing from you so long as you went through you know, your due diligence in hiring them, especially accountants, like accounts don't steal. That's not Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Yeah, your due diligence in hiring them, especially accountants. Like accounts don't steal. That's not a thing. We don't do that. So not worth it. We know it's not worth it. No, it's well 100% not worth it for sure. But not even right. I wouldn't I wouldn't I would not do well in prison. Like do you see this? Same. Yeah. No, no, no, none of us are doing okay in prison. Right? But like people are probably not stealing from you, but there's probably there's probably some sort of a knowledge there's there's probably some sort of a knowledge gap starting. Chris Audio: We don't do that. So yeah. No, it's well a hundred percent not worth it for sure. Not even right, no. Dalton Audio: Not worth it. We know it's not worth it. Chad Audio: I would I wouldn't I would not do well in prison. Like at all. Chris Audio: No. Same. Yeah, no, no no none of us are doing okay in prison. Right? But like people are probably not stealing from you, but there's probably there's probably some sort of a know it's there's there's probably some sort of a knowledge gap start there. Dalton Audio: Did you s do you see this? Chad Audio: Yeah. Dalton Audio: Ha ha ha. Chad Audio: Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Yeah. Yeah. So so you hit on exactly what what it didn't take long to to figure out what it was. It was it, you know, the instant I got a balance sheet was like, okay, what your over and underbillings look wildly out of line for your size. So it's so it it ended up being just a lack of knowledge on how to make entries and they're not getting an audit. It's they're just having they're just doing it for a tax return and it's just taken this long for Chad Audio: Yeah, so so you hit on exactly what what it didn't take long to to figure out what it was. It was it you know, the instant I got a balance sheet was like, okay, your over and underbillings look wildly out of line for your size. So it's so it it ended up being just a lack of knowledge on how to make entries and they're not getting an audit. It's they're just having they're just doing it for a tax return and it's just taken this long for Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: you know, the errors they were making to compound the point was like this is c something is clearly not right here. So that that that ended up being how we un figured out what was wrong. And then and then I guess like the follow up I guess for you guys is when once you identify those things, like the thing I've always sort of struggled with is and it's it seems more predominant in Chad Audio: you know, the errors they were making to compound the point was like this is c something is clearly not right here. So that that that ended up being how we and figured out what was wrong. And then and then I guess like the follow-up I guess for you guys is when once you identify those things, like the the thing I've always sort of struggled with is p and it's it seems more predominant in Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: like contractor type work. Like you nobody nobody figures out how to pour concrete because they understand how to to do whip schedules and accounting. And it's it's always the other way around. It's it's it's we end up I think a lot of times being viewed as the I'm just doing this so that I can file a tax return or or something like that. How do you how do you deal with the business owners that almost Chad Audio: like contractor type work like you nobody nobody figures out how to pour concrete because they understand how to to do whip schedules and accounting and then it's it's always the other way around it's it's it's we end up I think a lot of times being viewed as the I'm just doing this so that I can file a tax return or or something like that. How do you how do you deal with the business owners that almost Chris Audio: Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: it's not that they don't care about it, but they don't understand. They don't want they're they don't want to take the time to understand. And it's like, this is kind of your world, you deal with it. I'm like, no, you're gonna you're gonna run yourself literally out of business if you don't at least have some sort of baseline understanding of what's going on here. Like, do you deal with that a lot? How how do you have those conversations with owners when when that situation comes up? Chad Audio: it's not that they don't care about it, but they don't understand. They don't want they're they don't want to take the time to understand. And it's like, this is kind of your world, you deal with it. I'm like, no, you're gonna, you're gonna run yourself literally out of business if you don't at least have some sort of baseline understanding of what's going on here. Like, do you deal with that a lot? How how do you have those conversations with owners when when that situation comes up? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: those clients honestly end up not really being our clients for very long. Like our our whole business is based on the relationship for that exact reason. Like I can't draw value to you if I'm just operating a silo. It's not a thing. Yeah. So you know, the but like that that happens, right? But where we usually start is with just spoon feeding information. So little tidbits. like trying to coach them up. Chris Audio: those clients honestly end up not really being our clients for very long. Like our our whole business is based on the relationship for that exact reason. Like I can't draw value to you if I'm just operating a silo. It's not a thing. So, you know, the but like that that happens, right? But where we usually start is with just spoon feeding information. So little tidbits. like trying to coach them up. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So that they understand their financials and they understand what they should be looking at. If that doesn't work, you can go to kind of like the red alert system, like this thing's broken. Here's a flag. This is broken. This is what it means. Right. So you're not you're not giving them the the tools where they can get where they can like figure it out themselves, coach them or or like here's what you should be looking for. You're basically just telling them like this is really broken. And maybe that gets their attention. And then the other thing is, you know, meet them where they are. Chris Audio: So that they understand their financials and they understand what they should be looking at. If that doesn't work, you can go to kind of like the red alert system, like this thing's broken. Here's a flag. This is broken. This is what it means. Right. So you're not you're not giving them the the tools where they can get where they can like figure it out themselves or coach them or or like here's what you should be looking for. You're basically just telling them like this is really broken. And maybe that gets their attention. And then the other thing is, you know, meet them where they are. So how do they want this information? Is it a loom video? Is it an email? Is it an actual meeting? Is it, you know, carrier pigeon? I don't know. But you know, everybody ingests information differently. So if those things don't work, that's when they end up not being a client. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So how do they want this information? Is it a loom video? Is it an email? Is it an actual meeting? Is it, you know, carrier pigeon? I don't know. But you know, everybody ingests information differently. So if those things don't work, that's when they end up not being client. Yeah. What about you, Dalton? Yeah, same. I I think if if we're highly relational too. So if there's friction where my outputs aren't being valued, then it's like I Chris Audio: Well right you don't. Dalton Audio: Yeah. Yeah, same. I I think if if we're highly relational too. So if there's friction where my outputs aren't being valued, then it's like I there's enough clients, I can move on to somebody else that does value it. Cause then if if there's no value there, then there's always gonna be arguments about why you're charging so much, right? That's just gonna be that's just gonna spiral. So yeah, I think I think sometimes I at least give it one try of like communicating those things, right? Like you try to get the person on on Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: There's enough clients, I can move on to somebody else that does value it. Because then if if there's no value there, then there's always going to be arguments about why are you charging so much, right? That's just gonna be that's just gonna spiral. So yeah, I think I think sometimes I at least give it one try of like communicating those things, right? Like you try to get the person on on Chris Audio: Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: your side of the argument, right? But if they're just not willing to move, then it's like, okay, well, go on. Like if you're a business owner though and you've never run a business before. Dalton Audio: your side of the argument, right? But if they're just not willing to move, then it's like, okay, well, go on to something else. Chris Audio: Yeah. Like if you're a business owner though and you've never run a business before, you need a good accountant, you need a good attorney. Like you you need to put together that team. You either have to have an internal, you have to have an external, and you have to have those relationships. Otherwise you're just gonna be making money in spite of yourself and hopefully that carries on for forever. But a lot of times what we see is it doesn't just because you don't know. You don't know, we don't know. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: You need a good accountant, you need a good attorney. Like you you need to put together that team. You either have to have an internal, you have to have an external, and you have to have those relationships. Otherwise, you're just gonna be making money in spite of yourself. And hopefully that carries on for forever. But a lot of times what we see is it doesn't just because you don't know. You don't know, you don't know. Yeah. Yeah, that's that's I feel like we're I don't know if you guys are seeing this, and this is a whole nother episode. So I just want to pitch the topic and then what we're gonna pivot. But if it I am Dalton Audio: Yeah, that's that's I feel like we're I don't know if you guys are seeing this and this is a whole nother episode. So I just want to pitch the topic and then what we're gonna pivot. But if it I am living in the experience of clients coming to me because they follow TikTok advice and set things up, and then I'm like, no, like you miss a number of really important pieces and the the cost to fixing them is so much more than if they just would have done it the right way the first time. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: living in the experience of clients coming to me because they follow TikTok advice and set things up. And then I'm like, no, like you miss a number of really important pieces. Yeah. And the the cost to fixing them is so much more than if they just would have done it the right way the first time. Chad Audio: What? Yeah. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: So that's another episode. That's more drama. We're not going to tackle that today. But if you're following TikTok advice, tread lightly, find a CPA or an attorney, a good advisor that you can work with. Dalton Audio: So that's another episode. That's more drama. We're not going to tackle that today. But if you're following TikTok advice, tread lightly, find a CPA or an attorney, a good advisor that you can work with. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: episode three is TikTok advice. There you go. Yeah. That sounds good. all right. So let's before we circle back to the beer, what do you guys got going on? What what rounds are you playing in the next Chad? You say you're taking the whole new next week off. Chris, you got anything scheduled? Anything coming up next week? Chris Audio: Yeah, episode three is TikTok advice. Dalton Audio: there you go. Yeah. Well, that sounds good. all right. So let's before we circle back to the beer, what do you guys got going on? What what rounds are you playing in the next Chad? You say you're taking the whole night next week off. Chris, you got anything scheduled? Anything coming up next week? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: I've got a pro official in eight days that I need to get my act together for. So I'm probably gonna be hitting some bunker shots, gonna be hitting some putts. I'm trying to get that driver straightened up. Chris Audio: I've got a pro official in eight days that I need to get my act together for. So I'm probably gonna be hitting some bunker shots, gonna be hitting some putts. I'm trying to get that driver straightened out in the next week. So wish me luck. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: the next week. So wish me luck. Nice. Yeah. I'm taking I'm taking a week off of lessons, but I'm playing okay. I'm playing twice in lieu of working to that's kind of why I work today on Labor Day because I've got to play gotta play twice this week. So got got got plenty of golf coming up. So nice more frustration. Nice. Awesome. Yeah I'm I'm gonna try to get a full nine virtual though simulator nine where I'm hitting Chad Audio: Yeah. I'm taking I'm taking a week off of lessons, but I'm playing I'm playing twice in lieu of working to that's kinda why I work today on Labor Day, 'cause I've got to play gotta play twice this week. So got got got plenty of buck golf coming up, so more more frustration. Dalton Audio: Okay. Perfect. Chris Audio: Yeah. Dalton Audio: Nice. Awesome. Yeah, I'm I'm gonna try to get a full nine, virtual though, simulator nine, where I'm hitting driver long approach, all that kind of stuff. gonna try to do it on a simulator so I can pull the plug if it goes poorly. not from my game. I know my game's gonna be poor, but from the from the hip side of it, injury side of it, I can stop it without having a walk of shame or cart ride of shame for the three holes or something that. cool. All right, let's circle back to these beers. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Driver long approach, all that kind of stuff. gonna try to do it on a simulator so I can pull the plug if it goes poorly. not from my game. I know my game's gonna be poor, but from the from the hip side of it, injury side of it, I can stop it without having a walk of shame or cart ride of shame for the three holes or something like that. cool. All right, let's circle back to these beers. Chad Audio: Mm-hmm. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: Chad, remind us what you're sipping. What are your your thoughts on it? What's your rating? Dalton Audio: Chad, remind us what your sip in what are your your thoughts on it? What's your rating? Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: The nightmare confetti. Chad Audio: The Nightmare Confetti from Cigar City. I love it. I'm gonna probably try to find more. This is I I kinda forget what our our scale is a little bit, but this is this is probably flirting with eight nine range. I mean this is Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: From Cigar City. I love it. I'm gonna probably try to find more. This is I I kind of forget what our our scale is a little bit, but this is this is probably flirting with eight, nine range. I mean, this is let me Dalton Audio: Okay. Okay. Let me let me sorry, I I should have done that to get get our tiers. So so rating again, the full ratings in episode one. So if you want that, go listen to episode one. one and two is your no thanks. I'm not drinking this again unless I like gun to my head. Like, but I I genuinely do not want to know a sip of this. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: let me sorry, I I should have done that to get get our tiers. So so rating again, the full ratings in episode one. So if you want that, go listen to episode one. one and two is your no thanks. I'm not drinking this again unless I like gun to my head. Like, but I I genuinely do not want to know a sip of this. Chris Audio: Eight nine. Dalton Audio: three and four is only if it's free. Somebody hands me one. I'm like, all right, I'll probably drink it, but I'm not paying money for it. five and six is solid, very respectable, good, no complaints. Seven and eight's like is a good beer. Chris Hervochon, CPA, CVA: three and four is only if it's free. Somebody hands me one, I'm like, all right, I'll probably drink it, but I'm not paying money for it. five and six is solid, very respectable, good, no complaints. Seven and eight's like is a good beer, right? Like I'm I'm I'm paying money for this. I see it on the the grocery store, I'm buying it, restaurant buying it. nine and ten is like elite, right? Like this is like I am this top five beer for me. that's that's kind of the general ranking. So sorry, Chad, back to you, your your scores and thoughts. Dalton Audio: Right. Like I'm I'm I'm paying money for this. I see it on the the grocery store. I'm buying it, restaurant buying it. nine and ten is like elite. Right.
