God Bless Golf: God bless call episode seven. are glad to be back to my left partner in crime, Richard Stapleton, AKA Richie spice. let's jump right into it. What an incredible week in a of Egypt for the TPC. First thoughts man, mean, had everything we wanted coming out of Saturday night. Had a great Sunday, had theatrics, had collapse, had probably what may be the shot of the year on the PGA Tour. A of talk about how far that ball went and where it landed. So if you're disappointed about this week in golf, you can ⁓ turn around and not listen to this because that's about as good as it gets right there. Yeah, what an amazing ⁓ tournament had was out there on Thursday or excuse me on Friday and then got to bring my son out on Sunday to follow some of the early groups around. Got to see Scottie Schoeffler dip into the toddler zone I might say. But just an amazing week as always. The course was set up fair. Nice. that was on site two of the four days, I can say they got really lucky with the weather. ⁓ behind me, as I'm sure everybody listening to this anywhere north of Jacksonville, it's cold. It's about 43 degrees today. ⁓ the boys made out. Obviously first day with a little rain delay, but ⁓ when the wind did pick up, it was never as bad as it could have been. ⁓ the wind was a favorable one. Very. Not that 17 is ever easy, but having 17 and 18 pretty much dead down win. You just got to control your adrenaline on 17 and then 18 is just sin city and what a drive from Cam. And for those that have never been, just to stand on that T on 18, it is so easy to hit it right. I mean, it is so easy to hit it right. So for him to step up and do what we all hope we would do in the pressure moments and say, hey, this is my time. you This is why I practice and I think he was quoted as saying I told myself I was going to hit the best shot of my life and man did he ever. Unfortunate for Oberg. He had made that bogey at the end of the day on Saturday. Somewhat shaky start on Sunday. Yeah. you know blows that one right on 11 with a second shot and then just hits a shot that we're all familiar with on 12 just that dreaded snap hook and the famous words of Moe Norman the only thing you can say to a hook is sit down and that thing went right in the water and I think that was kind of the beginning of the end for him the two boys ahead of him young and Fitz just what a a dog what a just a competitor battle down to the end and Cam Yeah. won it kind of like last week or two weeks ago with Akshay. I mean he came in one the golf tournament and that's what it takes on tour to win. No one's going to hand it to you. Well, even if Ober did hand it to them, one of the, was three or four guys that could have won for a minute there. It looked like Shafly had a opportunity leader in the clubhouse, but Yeah. Nice to see Xander back up at the top too. I love his game. Love the way he plays and handles himself. Yeah, mean, he's arguably as good as anybody in all facets of the game. So when he is on, he's one of the guys that like Scottie is just tough to beat. Scottie didn't have the best week, I guess by standards of ⁓ everybody puts on him. it's tough golf course. Yes, right, ⁓ those who don't remember, Richie big on Scottie winning this week, but. If you went off of Spice, you won money this week. And you know, some other guys played really well. And again, it's just as we are in the middle of this, you know, 45 days of just unbelievable sports. This is just another event the Florida swing ⁓ ⁓ just great drama. ⁓ ⁓ know, final thoughts that I have from the event is I really like Cam Young. seems like a great dude. I really like Fitz too. And to see those guys playing well. certainly makes me excited for what's coming in the future and then again selfishly when you and we'll talk about live golf in a little bit but when you look at that leaderboard boy it'd be fun if all these guys were playing together but no one's gonna listen to me on that one. How about you Richie? Final thoughts on what you saw what you witnessed at TPC and obviously everything that's been said has probably been said on any other avenues but is there anything in particular that wanted to talk about before we move on? Yeah, no, think I think we covered a lot of it, you know coming into the tournament We'd like to see some more guys there, but it is what it is and and you know, the weather really was great It was nice to see you know TPC not littered with rain and excessive wind I should say You know, you kind of looked at some of the things that over did coming down the stretch missing it both ways just the standard You know average golfer day out there for him ⁓ can obviously relate to that a little bit but great tournament great setting the PGA Tour got what it needed got what it wanted Their marquee event was freaking sweet till the last shot literally. So ⁓ were all wondering if Fitz could get up and down from there and make a putt. Hats to him. Again, if you like betting, bet on him in the near future because he is an absolute bulldog. So he'll be back up there sure enough. If you haven't ever followed Fitz's Instagram or his wife's, it's one of the funniest things you'll ever see for a PGA Tour player and his wife. So shout out to them for keeping it real, keeping it classy. ⁓ Yeah. Great week overall and looking forward to seeing what can be, you know, upcoming here soon. So what do we got next? got Valspar right down the road, not far from where you used to live, Richie? What do you like about this course? Let's talk about an absolute beast of a golf course. Correct. Yeah, you know, think what's going on? What's going on this week? Valspar, right? I mean, there's there's obviously the hardest one of harsh courses on tour I can't remember a double digit Well, you know when's the last time a double digit score one there and it may be 10 or 11 But it's never 16 or 17 So I like the fact that you know to quote Timmy Tucker from Tim Tucker from a long time ago when first time he walked it was with Bryson back in the day and it was this is the hardest golf course I've seen the way they lay it out. So without a doubt. No. You add that with maybe potential soggy conditions, know, with all the rain and wind and everything that's gone through here, so through there. yeah, looking forward to that. I know we've had some, we had Bobby McIntyre withdraw and a couple other guys who are not going to play, but I think this is an event that doesn't necessarily get ⁓ the of the best, but it's always fun to be over there in the Tampa coast and, you know, get that community involved with golf. It's a great turnout. It's an easy walk. for the patrons and who doesn't like the Copperhead? Who didn't like the finish of that place? Yeah, it's such a great track and I mean obviously it's not maybe the most marquee names around but you got Xander, got Fitz will be there, you got Victor Hovland who I think won last year, JT, Akshay, Brooks will be there, Spieth will be there, Connors, Ben Griffin, Keegan Bradley. So there's plenty of guys obviously, a lot of good players out there that will be showing up and a this is always one of the hardest golf courses on the PGA Tour. It is ⁓ just demanding and it's just, you Florida golf is a lot harder than most, especially ⁓ this time of year. And, you I guess this is where the guys that already know they're going to be playing Augusta ⁓ is real strategy of how they are going to move into these next few weeks. ⁓ And a lot guys are going to skip this and ⁓ I know if they're going to play two in Texas. That's a point. My guess is guys that aren't playing this week are at Augusta playing a practice round maybe with their friends and family. Yeah, maybe with Tiger and Charlie. I don't know. Less tiger whiz maybe. But Charlie Woods was playing in the Sage Valley Junior, which is basically across the street from Augusta Nationals. So I don't know if Tiger's jet there means that he's playing. I would be shocked, but I love him to be there. But I would put that percentage of him playing Augusta at like 0.2. I don't know anything. I don't know anything. But that just would be my guess. But he was up there watching Charlie play, I'm sure. And then all the people that followed. hate to hear that, but that's probably true. the jets were probably like, ⁓ Tigers there. And maybe he was there, maybe he was just driving around. I mean, that golf course is hard to walk with like two fantastic legs. And I just know this poor guy. Tigers, mean, he's had some damage. mean, God, was nobody else I'd rather see out there than him. I haven't seen any, like I said, I don't have any inside information or know anybody. just the bit of stuff I do of observing him and seen him walk around I just don't know if a competitive event like a major championship like the Masters is what he's doing but you know what it is Tiger Woods and he shows up Yeah, let me throw this back at you too, because that's a good point. mean, is it time? I don't want to say to like say he's done, but is it it is time. I think that we all need to stop getting our hopes up so much for him to do well. His competitive fire I think is always going to be there. That's him. But not going to say all you'll never see him win an event again. He's going to kill the champions tour when he plays, but in a golf cart, ⁓ Yes, it's time. Mm-mm. Yeah. You know, I think it's, I don't know what your thoughts on this are, but I think it's time that we just relax on, is Tiger gonna be there? You know, might be there, but I don't think, I think he's done playing, you know? Well, and this is something that I mean, think all of us have to deal with as we get older, but like this is the seventh year anniversary of when Tiger won. So it's been seven, it was 2019 and since then he drove a cliff and almost died. ⁓ And then it's had several other surgeries. ⁓ So. ⁓ yeah, back in 19, wow. Right. I mean, he is a superhuman. But I just, yeah, think it's ⁓ those that are expecting that, just we want. It's kind of like that if you're the WWE fan and you're just waiting for whoever, some guy that hasn't been out for a while. ⁓ Stone Cold the Raw or whatever, right? You can't AI generate like showing up to the Masters and playing well. Stone Cold Steve Austin. mean every year that course gets harder and longer and every year he's older and has less body parts that can help him, you know, do it. I mean, I don't want to call it sad. It's not sad. He's had an amazing career ⁓ the guy did a lot of stuff to himself. You know, ⁓ I'm not to judge the guy, but he does get a pass where others maybe don't. And when you consider... Right. the amount of damage he could have caused to a bunch of other people not including himself. I he really is lucky not only to be alive, but that he's not in somewhere for doing something even worse. And ⁓ sure he's with that too. And I'm sure he has a driver just in case he feels like getting spicy. And that's how it should be. ⁓ I ⁓ yeah, ⁓ and just think as we get further away from ⁓ Right. Nothing better than the NFL policy on drivers by the way, you know, we learned that from Henry Ruggs Tiger, just becomes more insane how much better he was than everybody now or back then. don't me with the competition. It's never to, you're not going to do it and it's not going to work. And it's great as all these golfers are now. They're not even the same, they might be in same solar system. ⁓ But they're nowhere near the same planet the big cat was on. ⁓ yeah, but you know what? I think the more we celebrate his career and what he's done and what he's done for golf and everything you see, all these people that love golf, mean, a piece what they love was. ⁓ No. was because of the Tiger thing. Rich, I guarantee you, you're, because you're that right age, younger than me. I mean, how could you not be young and love Tiger Woods, even if you don't know anything about golf? ⁓ I got a great point right there for you to validate that because I don't remember 96, but I remember 97. don't physically remember. I remember the Braves losing in 96 to Lay Ritz's home run, but I don't remember the Norman collapse because I wasn't. let's not talk about that. ⁓ I don't remember the Norman collapse. I have to go back and watch it. And I think it's fascinating because they were just 12 months apart. yet, again, at that age, that's where you gravitated toward dominance and they changed everything. Right. Yeah. Yeah, mean Norman's collapse was, was more, was sad, it was really sad because you're thinking there's no way. And he did it and he already kind of had that mantra and then came the anti, I mean. Norman was doing Tiger kind of stuff. He just wasn't winning every time and then Tiger came and was even a more powerful Forreston Norman, he was African-American, is in a lot of places and including Augusta National Leary one wasn't not everybody was thrilled with ⁓ so he came in with a chip on your shoulder that you can't buy or pay a coach for him and he he's coming at a completely different angle and Change whole golfing world. I mean he said hello world. Everybody said on us guys man boy sure is cocky well ⁓ Everything he kind of said he was going to do he did. He didn't quite win 19 majors. He's not going to win 19. I don't think anybody's going to win 19. Unless they start making the waste management and the players championship majors too. And then maybe if you add more majors somebody will win. But as long as there's four majors I think the record of 18 is safe. I think the record of 15 at second place is insanely safe. hidden. just, I don't know if any modern player will get to 10 to be honest. ⁓ just. ⁓ I agree. I think a gram slam is more important to those guys winning all four than the number, right? And even talked about the number since he talked about getting to Jack. So I totally agree with that. Well, he, yeah, I he was the only one talking about the number. And you know, we were out there to, were out there with some friends on Sunday. We brought our kids. It was our first time seeing golf. And so it was pretty exciting. Of course, as as we get there, my legs are tired. I'm hungry. I'm thirsty. Deal with all the wonderful things about having children. ⁓ bless golf. Yeah, God bless golf. But we found a spot where we could kind of sit in the shade and watch some holes. We got to see Scottie and Akshay and some guys roll through. And that was cool. know, the kids, they don't really know what they're looking at, but they're looking, right? And they're seeing stuff. And we start talking about just the golfers and the demand on the golfer. And, you and not that this is a bad thing, but I don't know how many guys... wake up every day and be like I want to break all of Tiger's records. They might say it but lived it. Like Tiger would win a tournament by 10 ⁓ why guys two through seven were in the bar celebrating that they just made a bunch of money. Tiger's to ⁓ the ⁓ and already defeated and he like defeats them even more. So like from a Yeah. And was just, it just such a different vibe that I just, know Scotty wants to win and he wants to win so ⁓ every but I don't if that desire to be that dominant is just something that, and that's okay because it's not like that. That competitive nature can work ⁓ for evil. Tiger has ⁓ as Tiger has too, right? Like, I mean. Absolutely, that's a great point. If you're just competitive in golf, there's probably other things you're competitive in. then, I mean, just can create a lot of issues done the wrong way. I don't think Nicholas was thinking about how many majors he won because there was nobody that wasn't thought in his head. And then when won that last one, it made that 18 number. Then that was where Tiger ⁓ set his stats for all time go after. So all these guys are good out there. I just wonder how much how much of them are really just you know The days of I'm gonna put a poster on the wall and be this person I just don't know if that desire is there there's so much money to be made and these guys work really hard I think cam young is ⁓ of the guys that I'm sure he did the guy ⁓ know he gets he has the rage in him when he plays bad. We've all seen that Which is why he's so good. mean, you gotta have that. But just to win, and he looks like, big deal. But we've talked about on the show, winning is exhausting. not everybody can be around there fist bumping all the time. ⁓ And cool and calm. Right. Yeah. you know, worked his way to victory. But I know I kind of got off the path there of like where we were headed is, but ⁓ just when you see all these golfers, think from entertainment side, okay, you had Tiger was served up on a silver platter and you ran the out of that guy for 20 years. I mean, as you should, he was your bell cow. then as these young guys were coming up whether it was Rory or Justin Rose or Sergio and all these guys that kind of were and unfortunately for them they were who's the next Tiger versus You know Tiger Tiger just showed up on the world. You know, Greg Norman was known Yeah. Yeah, but I'm saying is there was ⁓ Made a hole in one. They didn't start talking about next Nicholas. They were just saying he's going to win more majors than me and Nicholas combined. mean, Arnold, he was almost like unbelievable. And I now coming up, ⁓ which I is great for the sport, but we've ⁓ to away for, we got to make this one guy, the guy. ⁓ Exalted. Yeah, I agree. Because every week this leaderboard's with five or six guys and until there's a guy that's just gonna show up and do Scottie type things, but look what this has even done to Scottie. You know, I mean you can see he's just getting like, hey man, I just wanna be normal for a little bit. Like I'm allowed to play bad, is that okay? Yep. Right and we've seen this twice now we saw with Rory in 2014 when he went on that tear and we're like, ⁓ Rory's gonna break everything and then if you know the pressure of the Grand Slam or whatever you want to call it the next decade happened and you know, kind of see Scotty going through a little bit of a what you what you would call a lull right now and in his career and not that he's lost as he said, but you know, can't play great every week and I think any athlete who's been in any arena will tell you that that's just not the way it works long term and There's a reason we have career, know, career in, excuse me, ends to career. And there's a reason you play good in spurts. And no matter what sport you play, you get a little, you catch a little heat, catch fire, and then you do your thing. And then there's times where you got to go work on your game and figure yourself out. And so I think it is very unrealistic to continue to anoint guys to be the next whatever. And God bless Miles Russell, cause you know, it's coming to him too next, right? You know, he's just flying through everything and knows what kind of expectations are going to be put on his board. the media really gets involved with his career. Yeah, it's again, you kind of think from... You know, we talked a little bit of last week about roll up and in the press conference he was having about, know, going forward, they are in the entertainment business. How do we, ⁓ do we do this? And, know, there's certain sports that have always done really good at individual branding. I think there are a lot of golfers out there who, ⁓ who do the needle, so to speak. think where. maybe they're missing the mark as they're trying to tell you who moves the needle. you know, they're, they're really trying, you know, I don't, we all know Brooks is back, but let's not, mean, you know, showing him as if, Agreed. You know, yes, he played good on Sunday and I'm glad he's back. And we've said this all the time. We're glad Brooks is back, but I just, find them kind of reaching to push players. And I think that the, you ⁓ as talked about before, there's a ⁓ bunch new guys in town, ⁓ but be honest, and it's not Cam Young's fault, but like. I'm sure people aren't lining up to have Cam Young talk on their show for 20 minutes or 30 minutes because he is who he is. He's a dog. He's an absolute solid guy. I mean, he's not just going to come on and let everybody just blow you away with his personality because the guy is just a ⁓ kind of a... Right. I don't want to say like a robot, but the guy likes to train. The guy likes to practice. The guy loves to play and compete, be with his wife and his kids. yeah, he'll let you in a little bit or maybe about who he really is. But the end of the day, the guy's is viewing this as his career and his job. ⁓ it's ⁓ necessarily his responsibility to be this entertaining figure. And I just wonder trying grow and expand, you know, how do you showcase Right. who these guys are a little bit more and I think that's one way to get in everybody has perceptions of who these guys are some and then some couldn't be further ⁓ from truth ⁓ and think when watching somebody on the golf course to just see him and say ⁓ I bet this guy is like this Right. outside of the arena or outside the ropes. mean, sometimes you'd be surprised, you know, they always say you never meet your heroes. Like some of these guys you see, you wonder like, is this guy who he says he is? So ⁓ know what I mean? Yeah, ⁓ yeah. ⁓ What does he do at 1130 at night when the kids are bedding there's nothing to do tomorrow, you know But I think that the tour is in a healthy spot. Obviously the tournament was great. think Masters is cranking up. And before we get into the NCAA, mean a quick shout out again, Bryson DeChambeau wins Lib, Singapore. What a cool hole. The four aces, another victory. AK, Anthony Kim just keeping it going, playing great. Another win for DJ's team. And know, truthfully, when you look at that leaderboard, Yeah. Those 20 guys, I Lee Westwood had a chance at 52 to win a professional event. And again, don't come to me with who he's playing against. Those guys are all insane. ⁓ know, I just want to see them all together. I ⁓ both in their own way are really, really doing well right now, which is golfers like us who love this show, we love to see it. Got to see them come together sometime. And then ⁓ one thing, the last thing I'm going to say for the however many weeks in a row, Right. Yes. When we're watching these tour events, why can't I see how much money these guys are making? Because man, there was some exciting stuff coming down the stretch with guys moving up and down the leaderboard. And I'm looking at the side like, man, that's the difference between seventh and third is like $1.6 million. Yes. Yeah. mean, congratulations on making the cut. I think the lowest payout was like $57,000, which Especially at that tournament, right? Yeah Probably breaks even on the week. What's what's a week at players cost you 20 25 grand if you're a player? House in Pontevedra got a few family members down big event. So yeah, he made 30 grand by playing poorly. Good job guys. Good Yeah Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. I mean making the cuts a big deal. There were a lot of guys that ⁓ you know had some moments ⁓ that Yella Moranju. ⁓ don't know how much they about this guy. Learned to play golf on YouTube and just made nine hundred and twenty five thousand dollars in a tour event. ⁓ And Yeah. Man. He talking about guys that you've never heard of. This is a perfect segue into March Madness, baby. Tonight, first four in, we got two games tonight. We got two games tomorrow. Brackets are flowing. We guys ⁓ telling that they love Belmont. They got got you got guys, everybody going with Yale. Yale's the hot team right now. Everybody, for whatever reason, is on. you you point. Yale getting seven and a half. Everybody loves the 11-6 game. Everybody loves the 5-12. You know, ⁓ thing is I used to love filling out brackets. ⁓ usually eliminated by Saturday. But ⁓ here, honestly, every time I do a bracket, Michigan State somehow ends up in the Final Four. just am just, that's the old man in me just thinking, ⁓ Michigan State's gonna make a run. ⁓ But say it right now off the bat. ⁓ they are good though. Florida, Michigan, Arizona, Duke. That's your Final Four. Pretty sure. Blue bloods. obviously Houston could be a team to sneak up on people, but we teased this a little bit last week, Richie, so I'd love to hear your thoughts as we get into the final four. Obviously the best players from mid-majors end up at these schools that are ⁓ ranked the top five as transfers. And so these teams that are years old and have all this confidence are very tough to beat. So ⁓ first thoughts, March Yep. Well, obviously today itself, St. Patty's day, obviously a great day to kick off the madness. Grab yourself a, grab yourself whatever you like to drink from the Irish side of things and go after it. It's, it's just a special time. I mean, I'm super fortunate to have sat the bench in one of these games and been a part of this, this dance, what you call the dance and what they do from team one to 64 for getting the perks and everything will always hold a really cool space in my heart. So whenever this tournament starts this week, I just kind of try to take a moment and reflect on what it really is. What was in your gift bag? For those who don't know, Richie played for the University of Montana in the year they made the tournament. Do you get like a welcome to the tournament bag with some stuff? Tell me a little bit about what you got. Yeah. So I mean, over here to my left is basically everything that I still have, which is, which is real cool because you get, know, you get the pins in the first round and the practice round pins in the media day, you got your name placard, but what's really cool is they basically put together a huge, a huge bag for you. And you know, depending on who you're school, what you are, Nike, Adidas, you know, whoever's sponsoring you, they're going to throw in some stuff. So we, ⁓ we all got, we all got two pairs of shoes. We all got basically outfitted head to toe and track suits. There was a, I believe it was a Game Boy Advance at the time. ⁓ yeah, yeah, Game Boy Advance or something. I can't remember what it was called. I wasn't a video gamer, but my boys definitely hit that up. And we got one of the first sets ⁓ I do remember we got one of the first iPod minis. So yeah, no screen. just a hit the next song, but you could plug it into your computer. So I mean, that was 2005. mean, the gift baskets are insane, I'm sure. ⁓ nice! I'm sure. But I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but ⁓ it was so cool to be, yeah, exactly. It was so cool to be in that situation. You walk into a hotel room, your coach is like, we're having a team meeting. You're like, ⁓ God, what are we meeting again for for the 19th time this week? You walk in there and the Nike rep sitting right there and you're like, right, ⁓ is cool. So ⁓ cool experience for all those guys who may or may not play a ton of minutes in the dance and get their one shining moment or whatever. But everybody gets to. Yeah, well it's been 21 years. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Everybody gets to shine and it's pretty cool. It's something I will always hold number one in the sports experience of my life for sure. Yeah, you know, that's really cool Richie and kind of listening to you talk is kind of like for those of you that have, that are listening that have either made a USGA event or played in a really, really big amateur or mid amateur tournament and you let's be honest I mean part of the coolest part of the coolest thing about going to these things is the stuff you're gonna get and I don't know why maybe I mean I think who doesn't like free stuff but there's nothing like getting something that maybe not everybody can get. If you ever play you know you ever know one of those guys that have all their USJ bag tags stapled to their bag for for years and years and years I wouldn't do it because it seems it makes too much noise for me but the people that do I know they get a hard time but hey you know what can't buy those so just Just like all the stuff you got, and I'm sure playing at University of Montana. ⁓ think you guys lost to Washington and they were like a two seed. So like you weren't going to win. They were the one seed. So you weren't going to win. ⁓ ⁓ Right. And the thing. Like I, ⁓ ⁓ I'm your dad went through this or if I was watching my kids ⁓ do that, like you're going to go make the track. You know, most likely ⁓ going to ⁓ Number one seed. Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson, hello. And unfortunately too, as I'm sure if you, your old person could go back to your young self, maybe either the first minute or that last minute of just kind of looking around and soaking it in. Nobody does that when they're young, so I'm not gonna, and maybe you did a little bit, but when you look back now, are you like, boy, I wish I would have spent five more seconds in that gym before I walked out, or whatever it was, because all the things that happened to you when you're young, you don't realize how cool it is until you get older and you look back and you're like, ⁓ damn, that was pretty cool. ⁓ Yeah, there's a moment that I've got in somewhere on it. wish I had a, wish phones were cooler back then, but the coolest moment I will always remember didn't happen on the court. was before the game when we actually showed up to the arena and what they do is they reserve seats for the players because you get there an hour and a half, two hours for your game or whatever. And they walk you out during the middle of the game with red coats and security and they walk you right to those things. They sit you down and the crowd goes dead silent when we finally came out. Thank Right. Washington came out first, like two minutes before us and we walk out there and you don't want to look up. I was like, ⁓ my gosh. I was trying to do it with my eyes. And then we all sat down and crept down with our phones and started doing the whole three 60, you know, we're in Taco bell arena out there in Boise state with, know, however many 5,500, 6,000 people packed to the brim. were game. We're the four o'clock game, I think last to the first set. So everybody was in there and Yeah. That's so cool. Okay. It was just, you said, was one of those, that's the moment that I captured forever in my memory. Sitting next to my buddy, Andrew Strait, you he was, we were all like, ⁓ my gosh, this this is crazy. Yeah, I think it was 88 77 we lost by 11 after a couple of late Matt Martin threes to go from 17 Covered the spread, I guarantee. Did you even know what the spread was in those days? You probably didn't know, did you? didn't, but my second favorite story about the term it is that you have to sign a waiver as a player to say you will not even fill out a bracket. so I always our family little bracket deal. My brother-in-law was like, okay, I won't send you the email, you know, so those little tidbits as a walk on that stuff was cool. Obviously you can probably hear the excitement of my voice and yeah, just one of those moments I'll cherish forever. Okay. ⁓ okay. Well... Thank you. That's hilarious. Yeah, I mean. I wouldn't ⁓ anybody, ⁓ should you, nor do you, as are your friends, of course. Your friends are maybe giving you a hard time that you only played a minute in the NCAA tournament, but guess what? You played and you were on a team that made it. And that's more than a lot of people can say. ⁓ And I as you get older each year, I'm sure when certain things happen, whether... We're all like this, whatever sports or something life happens, I'm sure it's a fun memory to recall, even though you probably don't remember exactly how it went, but just all the experiences and then where everybody is in their life. And you know what's crazy about this tournament, before get into the next ⁓ few segments is you never know what a couple of days in an NCAA tournament can do for someone's life. outside of basketball that they don't even realize it. And I think that's the funnest thing about this tournament is yes, we all love the buzzer beaters and this, that and the other. But think about all the players, the coaches, think about how many guys are playing on these teams that you probably bet on that you've never even heard of a game of their life. And then next year they're playing for Arkansas or Florida or Michigan, you know, and in there or working for KPMG or ⁓ mean, We're working for KPMG. You have a game, have a moment, the world is watching, you'd be amazed what it can do for you, especially in this day and age of trying to dollars here and there because even the most advanced scouts don't, there's gonna be some stuff that happens as it always does it's starting tonight that is just, it's what makes this event compelling and it's why we love it and it's why we... ⁓ You know, think we know all these things about who we're betting on and we certainly do not. So. ⁓ Yeah, shout out real quick to the Montana Grizzly team 05 06 the year after I was there. They actually pulled off the old 12-5 upset the following year. So they beat Nevada. ⁓ guy named Nick, I'm gonna mess his name up. Nick Fizikas was the big player back then for Nevada, but they played Boston College in the second round and got through a couple of days there. So, you like you said, you get a good core of guys, little bit another year older, they can create some special memories, which is kind of what today's game is like. Yeah, who they beat that year. Okay. Yeah, no, it's you know, last second buzzer beaters and then teams from Northern Central Appalachian Valley State, you know, just ruining your bracket like, know, you have, oh, pretty is going to win three games and they lose in the first round. And you're like, all right, bracket two, bracket three. And that's the one thing I love about this year. You know, you have guys that won't press a $5 Nassau, but as soon as you talk to him tonight, they got seven office polls and a Venmo trail. like they're selling drugs in college or something, you know what I mean? It's like they're like $290 deep into the NCAA tournament. So true. And you got this one guy out there to the left who's like, got it this year. I know this is exactly what's going to happen. And like you said, you're out on a Saturday after the first round because you lost two final four picks. Well, you know, I didn't want to make this week's Don't Be That Guy the guy that tells you that he had that team in the Sweet 16 because that is an annoying guy. It's kind like the guy to, ⁓ I him on my fantasy team. Like, you just can't wait to tell somebody that I love Drake or Belmont or whoever it might be. I can walk into Sawgrass at 8.30 in the morning and drink for nine straight hours and just hang out on 18. and ⁓ I'm not anti-alcohol sales. Some of the biggest sponsors out there, obviously you get all these tents funded by ⁓ Grey Kettle One, ⁓ McLoval, blah, blah. That's a recipe. But need or the desire or the want to heckle guys ⁓ as they're that guy from Happy Gilmore, you the jackass guy. And ⁓ that's literally they are. And I'm just surprised that you guys don't have friends ⁓ that are even. ⁓ like that guy. Like bro, what are you doing? have you, you know, as I say it all the time for people, for you people that drink all the time and love to tell how much you drink to all these people, you need to be better at drinking because if this is how you act, if you're on 18 and somebody's in the pine straw and you're just, you just want to talk crap to them and it just, it just makes no sense. You guys, all of us wish we could hit golf balls as good as these guys, all of us. to ⁓ use that as a reason because when you go to a football game you can yell and scream or a baseball game and you know there is a there is an etiquette there is a a certain way and we've talked about this before of just how you should act if you were going to play golf and really how you need to act when you're watching these guys play golf I just Yep. The antics just keep getting worse and worse and worse. We're heading to Valspar this week. Hopefully somebody down there is doing something. Just to actively cheer against these guys. I mean, can't even imagine. Imagine if you were on a date and you leaned in to kiss your girlfriend goodnight and some come, oh, that's terrible. You're the worst kisser I've ever seen. I mean, just starts lambasting you because here you are. You're you're really good at this and someone's telling you that you're not. I mean that would be awful right? mean you're right like come on guys like just don't I don't understand it I'm gonna keep pounding my fist every week for this guy I wish I could go to all these tournaments and find these guys and know call them out yeah yeah just well I mean that's against free country let's say what you want so I'm not trying to bar free street free speech I just don't understand You don't even know. going to hire some off-duty police officers to start doing it. of all the things you want to demonstrate your free speech rights on, it's that. I want to be an asshole at a golf tournament. Okay, well congratulations, you are that guy. And if there's a couple of your friends think that you're funny ⁓ this is just the way you do it, I just, I question everything about you. And secondly, there's no one around you wants to hear that. Like you said, you might have a couple guys laugh at you, like, dude, literally, to quote the segment title, don't be that guy. Like enough, man. Like it's not funny to the general public when you're like, Fitsy, you can't punch it out of the pine straw. Bro, neither can you. So lay off, all right? Like get out of here with your nonsense. This reminds one of my favorite Tommy lasagna stories Tommy the sort of sorry I think what we call lasagna in LA lasagna yes sir tom lasagna So one of my favorite Tommy stories, obviously the legendary manager for the Dodgers was throwing batting practice in spring training. There was some guy in the bleachers just chirping, Tommy, I'll take a yard. I'll take a yard, Tommy. So Tommy finally says, fine, brings the guy down there. The guy gets in the batter's box. Tommy throws it in the middle of his back and says, get your ass back in the stands. I wish there was somebody we could do that ⁓ these golfers. ⁓ really? Here, come hit this shot. I'd love to put the cameras on. ⁓ Oh, it's true true. Yeah, here's the club. Go ahead. Yep. But it's one thing if that famous guy in the Ryder Cup that bet Justin Rose that he can make the putt for $100 and then Justin Rose would come down and make it, he'd it. That was practice round, oh, I could make that putt. Obviously, he probably had a couple drinks, but I don't think that's anything beyond Justin Rose is a cool dude. He's like, come on, dude. I just find it in that moment of all the times, you've either been waiting all day to say it or you just happen to be wanting to take it. that opportunity and again like Reggie says don't be that guy like you are that guy there's nothing you can do other than stop being that be better this goes out to all the fans out there at the golf you know celebrate golf these tournaments should be a celebration of what how good these guys are because this game is so much harder than any other sports you watch as far as how they do it they're relying on no one Each week is a different course. so many factors that go into this and truthfully just ⁓ old week. I guess we're to keep pumping it each week. Don't be that guy. ⁓ It maintains throughout year. We might have a new guy not to be, but it all kind of filters back to when you're going to this event, what are you trying to get out of it, what are your expectations, ⁓ and then at point do you have so much to drink that you... you determine that's who you gotta be. Right, no, absolutely. Yeah, to all those who are attending Valspar this week or any other tournament here in the near future, obviously nobody will do that at Augusta because there's rules against that. We're on the fourth hole and we're watching. We can't see who's hitting the shot and we see a small splash and we hit a C on the ball. Thank you Scotty hit the water. So Scotty I guess on forward hit in the rough and was trying to hit on the green and went in the water. He dropped from the angle he was dropping. You could see where he wanted to land his ball to try to get it to come back towards the hole. He hit a little too far so didn't spin. So he walked around and literally walked from you know three feet in front of my son Ace sitting on the ropes. We got a great angle of his putt, which was for bogey. then he missed the putt low and he fist bumped like three or four times. The old sarcastic. Yes. Yeah, and mean that's tip toe into the toddler zone because I can promise you this. mean Ace wants to fist bump all the time so I don't think he picked that up. ⁓ I it, like I get why you're angry, but like you hit it in the rough and you hit it in the water and I was looking, I know where you were trying to land that wedge. ⁓ You it too far. It shouldn't have gone, it shouldn't have spun, ⁓ know, you were telling yourself. Out of the rough, yeah. No, he dropped it in the fairway because he was taking his line of sight and he probably mapped it out to whatever the yardage was, 87 and he was probably like, if I hit this 82, it's going to bounce, it's going to check, it's going to come back to the hole, but he hit it too far and it didn't. It checked, but it checked to the back of the green. And look, we've all been there. I know I've hit shots. I can't believe that, but that should have spun. And then I get up there and I'm like, yeah, I did fly too far. You mark your ball, you make your putt. ⁓ got you. But watching him fist pump after missing a bogey putt. ⁓ you and JT, and I'm sure JT did some more stuff this weekend, but we haven't had any footage of it yet, but we'll try to find it. Let's see what you got. First question, everybody's obviously filling out a bracket here. What ruins your bracket faster, the 12 seed or your own confidence? man, my confidence for sure. Because always pick 12 seats. it's so true. So true. You always think that one team is gonna take it all the way and there they go losing I just take all 412 so I can tell everybody I picked the 12. Second one, do you actually do any strategy or research or are you picking it based off mascots? Because we all know the old adage of ⁓ random person who doesn't know basketball picking mascots is usually better than any research analysis. I do seven 12 seconds of research before I make each pick or I a team that I've heard of and I'm like, yeah, they're pretty good. That's my strategy. Yeah, yeah, I like it. I like it. And obviously this is a show about golf. we a little comparison question for number three here. Is it the Cinderella or is it the underdog golfer? Would you rather see a Cinderella make a final four run like a George Mason did a couple of years ago, or would you rather see a guy who just got his PGA tour first PGA tour win and got an invite into the masters, make it a run on Sunday for the green gym. I mean if it's who do I want to win? I mean I love a Cinderella story like I love a guy that maybe we haven't heard of the aka David versus Goliath. ⁓ reality is Goliath probably wins 99 out of 100 fights but one time the underdog can can take someone down especially if it's like a guy you know like a Scotty or a Rory or somebody like that. You know I'm always pulling for good golf. So if an underdog story is the one that's going to do it and play well to win then yeah I'm all about that. And our final one here, and I'm very, very much on love this question because I think it shows both sides of what is the game. And real quick before we end that shout out to everybody getting on a plane to Vegas this this Wednesday night or lining their selves up at the pool patio for this weekend. I'm sure it'll be great. are you watching these games to see great basketball? Are you just praying for the chaos of March Madness? ⁓ think it all depends on who you're watching the game with and where you are watching it. ⁓ I think that the chaos is what we're all rooting for. But really, I enjoy watching it ⁓ for the guys that are the experts. I like seeing all their analysis go right out the window five minutes into a game because ⁓ they've just as much Akron basketball as I have. ⁓ Is there anything better than a dumpster fire from an aka what Pearl is doing right now? You beat, I get it, you beat Florida, but seven teams beat them. I mean, it's a basketball, you don't go undefeated. Sometimes you win a game because someone plays bad, but. Yeah, Bruce Perot enough of that already and yeah, there's nothing better than Listening to the keys of the game and then why should a team go like two for 19 after you know after the after Steve Pat or what's his name Steve Lavin the whole UCLA coach tells you how great they are That part is that part's enjoyable And again, like we said before it's those moments and the best part about it ⁓ yeah. is that the moments that are gonna be the best, one will predict. And ⁓ think that's why we all love it, right? Like some school ⁓ some kid that nobody knew that his sister had Down syndrome and his mother died seven years ago. mean, something's gonna happen that's gonna bring out this story and it may carry weight for a couple hours, but it gives that person, that family, that school some recognition. And I think that's the coolest part because I think at the end of the day, We've talked about this before. who the seven, four of the seven, know, the final four is going to probably be between about seven or 18 total because these guys are also loaded at the top. But that's what the best part about these first two is you're going to get teams that have no chance to make it to the second weekend, but ⁓ think they were going to make it to the Saturday or Sunday by winning one game. And that alone, as you kind of talked about earlier with your experience, I guess the older guy and the father of me, that's kind of what I think about like these kids and all the stuff they're going to. Just amazing experiences overall. Yeah, bonus question here. We'll wrap it up this way. You shared your final four earlier. You think in blue bloods. Who wins it all? Sorry to put you on the spot, I know. We're prepared for this one, Well, I'm gonna stick with the Florida Gators are the team that... That is my pick to win it all. I know, you know, I watched a little bit of the game the other day. They got blown out by Vanderbilt or whatever, but they had been on a crazy winning streak. They have the experience, they have a coach, and they don't have any freshmen on the court. And I think that all these great teams that have these freshmen players, at some point, as you know, Richie, there's gonna be a moment where they're gonna act 18 or 19. And usually that happens in that final four, lead eight time. I think if Florida can make, they're gonna, Right. Guarantee this is gonna happen because it happens every year They're gonna have a game probably not their first game because they're a one seed but the second game They're playing either Clemson or Iowa. Okay, they should be both either one of those teams by 10 or 11 points But one of those teams starts with a hot first half There's gonna be there's always those moments and usually the team I think Florida had a couple games like that like Yukon I can't remember somebody else I know Texas Tech was kind of crazy in the Final Four But you know, usually those teams can get through that game on that second day before the Sweet 16 but I think that team is prepared for whatever happens to them. I know Michigan, Duke, and Arizona are great but yeah. I'll fire power goes everything against being a Florida State Seminal fan to say, predict the Florida Gators will win the national championship, do back to back again. man, that's gonna be tough for me. Okay, I'm just gonna say it, if they win again, it's gonna be tough for me. mean, out. Florida was also the last team to repeat, do believe his champions, but you heard it here first. The Panda said it. Florida Gators, Natty's Natty champion, national championships coming back to Gainesville. Great, great, ⁓ great, great selection. I'm not too far off with you there. I think, I think ⁓ Arkansas is actually the team to beat this year. I know that's going to surprise some people exactly, ⁓ they have the best player in the country that you've never heard of.
