Curated Conversations: Hey guys, welcome back to Curated Confessions, where we drink wine and talk design. Cheers. I'm your host, Hilary Smith. And I'm Brittany Pelche Como. And we are the lead designers and owners of Brit Hill Interiors in Prairieville, Louisiana. Thanks for joining us today. Mmm. So friendly of you. Yes. I like that. We shouldn't say that more often. I mean it. ⁓ hearts. Okay. Today we are going to Well we on the last podcast, last week, we had a conversation about cost and being what is that word? ⁓ mindful. I don't think that's the word I was looking for. But ⁓ how we've had we do this pretty much in every presentation. We We've also as far as like this podcast isn't about billing, but it is because we but it is a conversation we've had numerous times. Like, ⁓ should we give itemized statements or should we just give room totals? A lot of designers just give room totals because it gives you a little more flexibility. Maybe there's a piece that's not available, or sometimes, you know, things just happen in the middle of a ordering procurement, all of that. So not to mention, like I just did a proposal and if I wouldn't have had it by room, it would have been like 20 pages. Like also that it's overwhelming. Yeah. And then the client gets bogged down with, Well, I don't know why this book costs this much, but this book costs you know, like the accessory ones can be also overwhelming. And ⁓ and at the end of the day It's a service and all of it's kind of rolled into one thing. So And everybody has a bottom line of what they want to spend. It really like And so honestly, if as far as accessories goes, if people would give a budget, that would be so much easier. Because then you could design the space knowing the number in mind and then It would be complete. A lot of times you go and accessorize a bookshelf, they see the total number, and then they want to start subtracting. And then I'm like, but now it's not finished. So now what do you do? But ⁓ But no one ever wants to give a number. That is something that people they really now sometimes it's hard for people to because they don't really don't know what they what to expect. What to expect, what things cost these days, what ⁓ but You know, nine times out of ten when the people say they don't know these things. They always say, ⁓ that's like two thousand more than what my number was. So they always know what they want to spend. Everyone has a number. Everyone. Now, if it's practical, does not is not. Yeah, and that that's another thing that But everyone has a number going into something. But it does help us to Whatever that number may be, to know in the beginning because we can tell you. Yeah, we can tell you like that is not a reasonable budget for what these inspiration pictures are and what you ⁓ are hoping this design will look like. Or, you know what, we can do both of these areas for that number, maybe you know, like it helps us gauge where we need to be as far as manufacturers we look at, because we have a broad spectrum of mid to high end manufacturers. So it helps with a lot of things. Just it doesn't you know, just throwing out a number to something for us to go off of. A lot of people think that if you do that, we are going to use your whole budget is always what I they say. And I'm like, no, yes. Yes. We are. Because what you want is more than what your budget allows. So yeah. Yes, we're going to use your whole budget, but that's because you bought items that are more expensive than your budget or the price of your budget. So I always laugh when people say that they're like, Well, if I give you a number, you're gonna spend all of it. And I'm like, I thought that's what the number meant. Was that that's what I could work with. So confused. ⁓ or that I'm just gonna make it that dollar amount. Now I do understand that. And I guess if it was a labor based Yeah. Like if you said I have twenty thousand dollars for landscaping and I'm like, Well, it's twenty thousand dollars and y for my labor. And I'm like, Okay, I can understand how that's not our industry though. I'm like, I literally price it out based on furniture. I don't change the cost of the furniture. ⁓ I didn't set the price of the furniture. So I do understand that, but not in the stance that ⁓ you're upset that I spent what your budget was because I thought that's what I was supposed to do. But ⁓ I think more so like how can you so I d I have one client in particular that I always think about when I talk about this and it's so funny because they just reached out the other day. ⁓ and I haven't heard from them in years. And so ⁓ they I remember doing the presentation and I had this crazy floor lamp that was on the proposal and the lamp looked like it was from the Titanic or something. Like it was ⁓ a huge like spotlight and the price, which now being in this industry for this also I will say sometimes we become a little jaded as far as numbers go. ⁓ the numbers have changed dramatically over the years. And even COVID was, of course, the hugest shift, I think, in my career. But I look at something back when I thought, you know, I worked at Restoration Hardware a hundred years ago and was like, ⁓ my gosh, who spends sixty dollars on a soap pump? And we have a company that has a six thousand dollar soap pump. So Yes. Not six thousand, but I feel like that agate one is really expensive. Six hundred, yes. And so I just I I just remember being like, ⁓ wow, I That seems so crazy that someone can afford that back when I used to look at that when I was, you know, twenty-two years old and eating ramen noodles. So but like I showed them the presentation. I was like, please don't get hung up on the price of the lamp because it's literally what sets the tone for the entire room. And I remember the husband being like, one, it's weird. Like it's so out of the box. Two, it's expensive. Like it's just unnecessary. We have a grandfather clock that could go in that place. They went on and on. And then one day he called me and said, order the lamp. ⁓ I don't remember if the wife was insistent on it or if he had just come full circle or I can't remember exactly what, but he ordered the lamp. And then about a month after the install, one they sent me a thank you card in the mail, which I didn't know how old school I was, but that was like One of the n I still have it on my bulletin board. I'm like, I have this thing and was ten years ago. I'm like when they text me the other day, I was like, I still have the thank you note on the bulletin board. Like it's still important to me. And 'cause of course they're always like, ⁓ I don't know if you remember us you and I'm like, Yes, I see your thank you every single day. And ⁓ clients say that all the time and like I can describe their house to a tea. For me, it's like I might not remember the name right off the back, but I remember everything I put in their house. I can walk through their house in my mind. I can like no go pull the fabric that I used. Like it's crazy. Yeah. I agree. Sometimes I'm like, I can't remember the client, but then they tell me their old address. I'm like, Yes. I remember driving there. I remember what I was wearing in that presentation. But I can't remember like what I did yesterday. No. I can't remember my birthday sometimes, but I mean here we are. But I can remember that when I walked in, there was a pelican painting to the left. You took a right, you went to the master sweep like no, I can draw out people's floor plans and they're like, You were there for ten minutes. I'm like, also weird, I guess. But but he ⁓ after we finished ⁓ you know, a month later, so he was like, It's so crazy. I think the floor lamps our favorite piece of the whole thing. And I'm like, yes, it requires faith. And I understand that seeing a dollar sign like a dollar amount on some object that is just something you would never have purchased yourself does seem like a waste of money at the time or whatever. But I'm like, there's that's the whole point. Yeah. One, the point is for me to encourage you to step out of your comfort zone. And two, it to There's things that like you can spend money on that have a wow factor. And a lot of the times it's something that's like in the corner that you don't even need. And most of the time it's those things that set your room apart from your neighbors because it's it creates a conversation. Mm-hmm. ⁓ when you have a party or you have people over, like there's things that stand out that they remember about your house. And it's normally the weird quirky things or the thing that you wouldn't have put or bought for the house, but we designed something, you know, a little like push the envelope a bit, you know? And it's it's those things that people remember and think us for after. Absolutely. And and just like you said, like when conversation piece, like I used to think that what I mean, it's like my house, why am I designing it for other people? But honestly, would anybody do any of this if it wasn't for other people? Now granted, I have had a client that ⁓ we pushed her a little further for her master bedroom and she didn't really want to go that big, but we ⁓ were just starting out. We needed to take photos, so she cut half of the stuff. We said, Would you mind letting us put it in there so we could photograph your space? And then we'll take it back. And then she wouldn't let us leave with it. And she was like, This is a great sales technique. ⁓ definitely let the clock. But but after that is when we started doing that. I mean, she had a good point, but also you really can't see that it's all worth like it all comes together. But she sent us a very nice message and said, you know, I have a high stakes job, life and death every single day. You don't know how important it is to come. I actually got coach Hills. ⁓ how important it is to come home and have a space in your house that you can just let it all go. Yeah. And a space that is well designed and calming and everything that I needed. My whole family comes in here. The kids love to come in here and hop up on the sofa. Like, and I was like, she was like, I didn't know I needed this. And it was worth every single penny. And I'm like, that is such a great thing to hear. Also, we did find ways to make it still look beautiful, but not spend as much money. So which is the whole point of this pod ⁓ podcast and what we do in about in pretty much all of our designs is like how far can we take this to have a a luxury custom look, but find ways to ⁓ save a dollar. Yeah. It's I and I find that like I still struggle with this because it doesn't matter if my client has a two hundred thousand dollar home or a five million dollar home. Treat it the same. If it's not necessary to do it, I don't see why I have to. I do feel like the industry has like a standard and like, why would you cut corners if you're in a five million dollar home? And I'm like, I just feel like we're spending unnecessary money if I can still do the same tweak here and there. It still gives the final look. And honestly, the clients that are spending the money for of five million dollar home or a ten million dollar home or whatever. Still counting pennies. Yeah. I'm like they've spent a lot of money They have the money because they've counted pennies their whole life. And it's like they've invested so much into their home, they still have a budget. You know, like it's they also have a bigger home to now make the budget stretch further. Right. I am not saying skimp in craftsmanship. No. Or quality of quality of product or safety if it means that you're gonna catch your house on fire don't do it ⁓ don't ⁓ hire somebody that's cheaper labor that's not really what ⁓ you definitely still wanna invest in quality trades and ⁓ people that are insured and you know things of that sort but once you hire quality people your budget does get a lot smaller for the pieces. So if you were trying to stretch your budget, what are your go-to hints to tricks tricks? ⁓ my goodness. for me, I guess it depend you know what we're designing in a space, but as a rule of thumb, for things that I need, like it could be say drapery. If you got a whole wall of windows and I have to select a drapery fabric and I need a lot of yardage, I'm not gonna go to my high end fabric, you know, I'm gonna try to pull something that maybe is more mid end of something that I need a ton of yardage for, but I might put a trim on it that like has a wow that makes it feel more ⁓ custom 'cause I don't need as much yardage of that. Or, you know, for an example. Or also a fun fact, I don't know if y'all know that your designers are doing this, but we establish relationships with our sales reps. And when we're working on homes that need a lot of fabric, I have a new issue asking for help. And I sometimes am like, I accidentally misquoted. Can you help me? Or my client doesn't have the budget for this, but it would look Fantastic in their home. Or sometimes it's just as straightforward as I do a lot of business. Can you help me? Like and usually all of them can do something. Like close to a half of a bolt, which they discount. And you might as well get a whole bolt because it'd be cheaper than doing ⁓ But it's also knowing that that's what we're doing. So it's like, okay, well, we can't use that one this that fabric for this window, but we're gonna use it for this larger window so we could get a discount on that bolt. Or we'll you know, there's a lot of I think thinking about numbers behind the scenes that people clients don't think about. Or if you do yourself, you could go find a fabric, but you're not gonna get it still for the same price point. So you're getting a more elevated ⁓ in products at the same price because we have negotiated a better price. Or yeah. And it's ⁓ also buying in like ⁓ I'm buying multiple fabrics from that same company because y'all have already heard me on my whole pillow spill. So I definitely try to order clients' products together to help on shipping or ⁓ and I don't know if y'all have been shipping anything here lately. I think Amazon Prime has ruined all of us that we think shipping is free. Shipping is astronomical. Yeah. It has gotten insane. I love my delivery men and women. I love that they're all getting raises. I do not like my freight bills. I am terrified. Yeah. Like we tried to ship a sofa from Carolina to Colorado and that cost us like fifteen hundred dollars. So Bailey's eyeballs just fell out of her head. Just on shipping. Just free. Yep. Yeah. It mm mm. Mm-hmm. It's it's crazy. So that's why I'm like, whenever people are comparing like designers who like some which this is not the point of the podcast, but ⁓ I digress. ⁓ online vendors who are buying products buy the shipping container and they're buying a hundred of them and you're trying to spec out one custom sofa for one client. We're already at a disadvantage because our price point is different for that. And then this company, because they have so much markup because they got the sofa for so cheap. can offer free shipping and we're like, can you please just give us a hundred dollars for shipping or like two hundred? Most of the time we eat half of the freight because we don't want to charge more than half. And it's we do charge like a shipping for custom stuff. And I'm like, it's really just to minimal. Make us not cry when we're finished. And we don't want all every client of ours to have the same sofa or the same throw pillow as a whole business practice. Yeah. I'm like, if you are someone that like wants the best deal and doesn't care having the same piece of furniture as everyone else, go buy it online. We're not for you. The nicest way to say it. But I'm Yeah. I mean, it's it's something that we are really take pride in is that we buy interesting pieces, one off pieces. ⁓ we love to go to market and find There's a couple of companies that we shop at that they go and find ⁓ one of a kind pieces in Europe and you know, all over the world and we try to get to market early so we can get those pieces. Yeah. And ⁓ And try to find vendors that nobody around here carries carries, which is hard to do. ⁓ but we have we have a few that, you know, are more custom and we're making more custom ⁓ like our pillow line and ⁓ our custom floral arrangement. So we're we're doing things that will also add to that custom feel without having to spend spend crazy amount of money to have, you know, manufactured custom pieces. ⁓ with that being said, so a great saving tip I think would be ⁓ a more simplified Sofa. Maybe that's not as high end, but custom pillows on it. Yes. Can give you that all the time. Very tailored, very custom look with a fraction of the cost. Right. So, Bailey, you just purchased your first first home? First house, yeah. First house, really. How terrified are you? ⁓ that first mortgage payment hit last month and I was like, what? Yeah. The mortgage payment didn't scare me as much. Personally for my own home as ⁓ because I mean rent's rent to me. ⁓ as like the first time I had like a water. Right. That's what that's what Bo and I keep saying. A C goes out. Yes. And you're like, now what? Big ticket maintenance items. Yeah. That's gonna be rough. Or hurricane season comes around and you're like, So what happens if ⁓ my roof flies off? Yeah. It's all scary. Yeah. I don't ⁓ you haven't been there yet. So I'm sorry. I just went ahead and thank you. I can't wait now. Get prepared. You know how you used to like leave when things happen and you're like, ⁓ I'll just come back. And you know, now you're like, I'm staying with my home. I now see why people stay with their home because you want to save your home. Yeah, I'm stuck. Because you're terrified. Yeah. We're also, you know, we've been together for eight years. So we're trying to like piece together all these pieces that we've collected throughout the years, things that, you know, in his first apartment and my first apartment we started out with on our own. Wait, what do you mean? Like pieced it together? Like got rid of his home I was like proud. Like I really like wanted to show off. I didn't care. It's like what do you mean it took you eight years to get rid of his stuff? He used to have a wall of cowboy photos. Just photos of sad cowboys at a rodeo. And I didn't care at all. But suddenly I my name's on a mortgage and I'm like get the cowboys out again. ⁓ ⁓ man. Yeah. So well that is I guess the difference between I'm I'm not a design girly. I think that's like my hardest thing is like w I am so not confident in what I like. I know what I don't like. I'm so good about what I don't like. But ⁓ the thing like since we're talking about like pricing and budget and stuff, it's hard for me sometimes to justify buying it when I'm like, I don't even know if I I love this. Like I need someone to tell me this is what you need. ⁓ Yeah. I will think I commit well we well and maybe we do. And maybe we do. But I the hardest thing right now is rugs. I I hate shopping for rugs. Rugs are the worst. ⁓ my god, because you look at them and they're you're up close and it's like this is hideous, right? And then you can see it in a room and you're like, ⁓ my god, it's so cute Like I can't visualize. Rugs online are not like even when we order samples like for our collection here, I will look at them online to order samples if we're not at market and I need something. They come in, I'm like, that's not what I'm But I'm like, who picked this one? Right. You're fired immediately. Like that is the hardest thing. So I've also had clients say, ⁓ don't I don't have time to wait for a sample. I trust your judgment, just buy it. And I'm like, No. That's a hard note for me. I don't trust my own judgment when it comes to rugs with no samples. No, ⁓ that's That is a very hard ⁓ but we do have a huge sample collection here so you can see the actual I'll come take a look. I am like we we always talk about that and I'm like always ha we just added another what 30, 40 samples to our rug samples because I'm like they're just outdoor rugs is my biggest pet peeve. Why are there no pretty colorful rugs? ⁓ I didn't even think it's outside, like They have been having more neutral rugs for outdoor than inside. I'm gonna say because it is it color fast, is that what I'm supposed to say? Or like fading property and I don't like we haven't figured this out by now. Like I don't know. These rugs are maybe we should sad outdoor rug. ⁓ yay. I need a I needed something else to put on my plate. So what besides rugs have been a challenge? furnishing wise. I would say our living room, it's it very clearly this it's a like forty year old house. And it very clearly had like a front room and then a living room with a wall separating it that they took out. They've they renovated it. So now you walk in the front door, it's just this massive space. Wait, I had to do the math. So that means it was like in the nineties, the eighties it was built? No. Wait, forties would be eighties, yeah. I'm trying to think what were we doing? The Brady Bunch does it have like a sunken living room. Brady Bunch is like full of the seventies. Yeah. I just watched it in the eighties. My bad. I'm just trying to think like what were we doing? Why would you have su you had a den. It was a den situation. They would have a living room. Exactly. And that's kind of it it's very similar to the layout of the house we used to live in, but it had the wall. So like the front room, we called it like the dog room. It had like a couch that we don't use anymore and like that your dog should sit on. And you can't the dog room. That's what you put in the front of your house? I did, yeah. Again, Hillary, I was not I didn't care about any of it. I'm s I'm so tired right now. I'm so sorry, my face. I'm Smile, smile. No, it was a terrible use of space, but we thought we would be there for A year and we were there for six. So ⁓ That is why you should always do with intention. Yeah. I do. And that's that's what we're trying to do now. Because you never know how long you will stay. Correct. This is true. ⁓ but yeah, I would say the spacing of the living room. Like I have no idea if I should have it as this separate two spaces. So if space planning is issue. That is that's different. So I mean my husband has weird cowboys, but technically they're his family members. So I had to figure out how to ⁓ incorporate those into We have no relation to the cowboys. Don't know why they're in my house. but oddly enough, well I'm just weird and I like double down and I would have like a whole saloon in my house and be like, that's where those are going. ⁓ Brittany, would what would you do? With a cowboy. If your husband had a cow because I don't know if your husband ha he had opinions, but I don't think he selected anything in your home. No. Mm-mm. And that's okay. She said no. That's okay. He selected Period. He selected things for his shop that ⁓ I brought to his intention ⁓ attention yesterday, actually, that we should have went with a different color. And he agreed. So it was not nice. Okay, got it. But you know, some I mean, I do think he made a few jokes that his friends were gonna come over and think he lived in a jewelry box or something about glitter and He does have Swaraki crystal cabinet hardware on his sink. He is a very pretty man, so I guess Well like it had to match my side. What do you want me to do? So Love him for that. I I try to incorporate my husband's weirdness and my I just always like they need to have their like special room or space or shop or whatever that they can have those things in, but they don't necessarily need to be like in the foyer when you walk in your house. If it's not if it's something that you both don't agree upon, you know? No. I s most it there's usually always one partner that doesn't care. Yeah. Yeah, this is not my case, unfortunately. I have a very sweet, sweet opinionated man. Who now has decided that every room in the house is different. That is where Brit Hill comes in. Because we gladly We're a great mediator. I can't wait for y'all to meet both. Tell them. That looks like trash. and normally they listen when it's a outside opinion, you know, and especially a professional one. Sure. Not all of them do. No. And they should. Hey, it's their home. Yes. At the end of the day. I I usually ask my husband, and he usually says, is it because you care or because you're trying to be nice? And sometimes if I really want the piece, I'm like just to be nice. Yeah. Sometimes I And sometimes I'm like, I really can't decide. But I have also found and then sometimes he gets a upset because I even ask his opinion for client stuff. Like, hey, I have presented this bench further four year or this console with the light situation, like I try to, you know, like and I can already tell by the way I'm describing which one you like better. But I didn't know that until I told him or asked him. And then he will say the bench. And I'm like But look, okay, so with the console, and he's like, why are you asking me if you already know? And I'm like, I didn't know until you said the bench. But that is the dumbest decision I have heard all day. And I'm like, he's like, you're the one that picked it out. And I'm like, point being, I know whenever I would ex try to fight for a certain scenario, that's then officially the one that I love the most. So h his opinion is valid sometimes. I think me and you do that sometimes too. ⁓ you definitely do it. But then sometimes you really are like, I made five designs, I need to narrow it down. Most time that is the case. And you're like, I like them all. Then you just sit there. So I'm usually pretty passionate about one and then I but I don't know that until I explain it. Right. But then after you say like, I like this one because blah blah blah then I'm like, Yep, okay, me too. Okay. Yeah. But I do think my husband doesn't think that I value his opinion. But that is a valuable asset, even if it means that he doesn't get what he wants. Yes. And sometimes I ask my husband because I want his opinion, but it still really doesn't matter because I'm gonna do what I want anyway. Honestly, if I asked my husband we'd have for Mike at countertops or something crazy. I I say that, but he is like the most bougie person. I've he is the most country bougie that I've ever met. You met you made him bougie. I I don't think he I did. I think he was that way and I just brought it out. I allowed him to be bougie that no one else did. Yeah. Cause he does walk people through the house and go, Did you notice the corsite countertops? I'm like, Excuse me? And did you notice the Venetian plaster? And did you notice the sword from Greece? And I'm like, look at you, Van of White, over there, like showing all the details. Then I also realized that maybe they care. Yeah. And then I heard my heart because I s we should listen. My husband doesn't care much about I tried to meet in the middle and get a recliner that doesn't look like a recliner, but he still rathers his big old lazy boys with the In the shop. Bachelor straight to the shop. It straight went off the property. ⁓ give zero crap as sponsor. But I tried. I See, I found the workaround on that. He wanted a recliner. I put one in the nursery and now he has to do nighttime duty. ⁓ It's good thinking. But I'm not having a child for that. Also agree with that. Don't do it unless you really want one. You go to Hillary's house and rock a stell. ⁓ Absolutely. That is Kyle's always like, I don't think this recliner was built for six foot four. And I'm like, it isn't a nursery. No, it is not. Like also he has rubbed the arms so many t it's like all what is it? Piling, peeling, whatever that nonsense is. Peeling. And he's always in some what is it? F F R no f yeah. Flame retardant clothing. Those FRC. FR no, he's not in that. That's a that's a ⁓ That's but I mean just it has a flame retardant coat. F R C clothing. Got it. But it leaves my arms blue from the denim from the excessive rock he's oppressive rocker. So which now when I try to rock Estelle, she is like, This is not a wild enough ride singing and humming and she's like, No, this is not acceptable. She needs to be on a roller coaster to go to sleep now. So whatever works. I just don't look at the chair and she's like, poor chair. But needless to say, apparently we like Both opinions. We like everyone's opinion that lives in the home. Yes. Even the dogs and kids. We get opinions from them too. And we love things. Mm-hmm. So we can't wait to help you. I'll turn into an infomercial. I'd be your mediator between your ⁓ Honestly, okay, so side story, and I know we're over time, but in college we had a professor, I don't know if it was at the same time or if we just both had him, but I had a professor tell me, design it's like twenty percent design. 20% mathematics, 60% marriage counseling. And I was like, that is the craziest thing I've ever heard. I did not believe it until I got into it. I'm like, yes. You're like a mediator. Correct. You're like, ⁓ this is all psychology, the whole thing. The whole thing. I'm trying to understand. Which I did take a lot of psychology classes in college. Me too, because I loved it. Loved it. ⁓ my gosh, the rats in the maze. That what is that? Pavlov's. Theory. I think so. Mm-hmm. Yep. Anyways. So that's what I mean. My psychology professor was also I took sex education with her. She was a hoot. So I was like sex education in college? Yeah, it was some like elective ⁓ I took woman's something and it was. And she went into the psychology of it and the like I'd love to take that class. ⁓ my gosh. I wish I like Could have taken more classes with her. I actually had a friend ask me if I would skip it, it a night class. Like, you don't want to come out? And I was like, It's psychology. And like I'm setting the curve in that class. Everyone hated me. And I was like, I am such a nerd. I would not go to a party to skip that class because I preferred it's fun times. Yeah. That was also when I was in nursing and I didn't care about microbiology, but psychology was fun. So And then I realize psychology is also sales. So it all intertwines.
