Curated Conversations: Hey guys, welcome back to Curated Confessions where we drink margaritas and talk design. Changing it up today. ⁓ no. I don't know if I love that intro, but here we are. So margaritas. Cheers. It's Friday today, film day, and we needed something stronger. All the strongness. It's been a long week. Hillary got I think I say this every episode. Hillary got started early. So now it's like actually we're like intervention. I really don't drink that much. But I did start earlier, so this podcast should be interesting. Very off topic and Or I'm gonna be so cagey because I'm scared I'm gonna use foul language or something inappropriate that I just Bailey will beep that out for us. Don't say anything. Keep this PG. ⁓ so Okay. What is normally we talk about what's up for the next week or the upcoming week, but normally we do that after Monday morning meeting, so we have no clue. Since it's Friday this week. This past week. Brittany had two installs. Yes, and I'm I did like curl my hair and stuff for y'all this morning. I did not. It has been a very sweaty day and I'm frazzled. I feel frazzled. ⁓ ⁓ you look fantastic. Thanks. I just put lipstick on to I love that. I put on chapstick. But we're here. We're winning. We're here. We're winning. ⁓ so yes, had it install earlier today and one Wednesday, and I feel like Which is funny to me. I don't know why it's funny. It's really not funny at all. But it was a mom and a daughter. Yeah. But and they did not buy their stuff at the same time, but just the way it all worked out. But Yeah, it was fun. That's funny if they left it all. Love that. I know. And a good week. ⁓ well, Isaiah loved it all. Today she the daughter wasn't home when I left there. So she didn't get to see the final reveal yet. ⁓ that's like the best part too. Yeah, but we were bringing stuff in, she was there when we got there and ⁓ she was like, ⁓ my gosh, I don't wanna she was like, Close her eyes. She was like, I don't wanna look. I love that. ⁓ but the baby was sleeping, so she was had to wait ⁓ to wake up so she could leave. So she was trying to just like She did see the relic and the sofa and a couple things, so it's cute there. But final reveal was like totally different and I think she'll be surprised still. Is she going back tonight? She works night shift, so she's at work afternoon. ⁓ okay. I think she just took the baby and the dog to get out of the the way. Yeah. Yeah. I was like, doesn't matter. We do installs with homeowners there watching us, which is I don't know. It's okay. Well, it's like you you wanna be like sociable and chatty while you work, but you kinda like it's it's hard to do while you do accessories and that's That's what I was gonna say. It's really not nerve wracking if you're bringing in furniture 'cause like you yeah have downtime. But it's whenever you're going up and down a ladder and you're thinking and it's so much like you put it there and you're like ⁓ next And then you move it over an inch and people are looking at you like you're kind of crazy, which Yeah. But they'll I have super anxiety when it comes to I'll have sweat dripping down my back going, Mm, I wish you would stop staring at me. Well, why are you putting it there? And I'm like, I don't know, because I feel like it like But you can't say that. Yeah. I mean I guess you can. I probably have. ⁓ I feel like I got a full like gym time a couple of times this week. How many times I went up and down line. I don't feel like their ceilings are that high. They're not, but I'm short and I gotta go all the way to the top of the ladder to get to stop chill. My baby. So Yeah. ⁓ I was painting at my sister's house the other weekend and I don't know if I brought this up already, but he went and got this ladder that he had at a store, a discount, which shout out, he moved stores to denim springs. So anyone that listens in denim springs go to discount to hire. Britt Donham is gonna take care of you. I got I gotta do that for him. ⁓ so he went and took the a ladder from the store and brought it home and I was like, that's so unnecessary. Like I thought they were just trying to waste time so they could make me paint as much as possible without them being there. But they showed up. He had this ladder that had like a little cute platform on it, which made me feel like I was a band director, which I did do that a lot while I told people what to do. But you could stand on it and it had a little ledge for your paint bucket and no bruised shins. That was worse. Well, like how high did the platform thing go up? Like six feet, but it was a ten foot ceiling. I have to adjust that. No. No, see no. Hmm. You're you're asking too much from the space. But you can still use the ladder. ⁓ I mean it was a ladder. It was just like the top rung was at like ⁓ it was just deep. So like 'cause you're not supposed to stand on that top rung of a ladder or like we stand. I have to. OSHA is coming after you. or me, whoever. ⁓ so but like I always like prop myself up against the lat like while I'm painting and like cutting in on the ceiling and so you're like doing weird painting the ceiling's the worst. You know what else is the worst? Those things, those shelf holder things. ⁓ that you have to move in and they either won't come out. Yes. Or they Today I was like I had a ton. And you got to get the hammer to push them back in because we And then you need to adjust it 'cause you move the accessory and then you're like, nope, this is gonna live here for forever. Because we painted the book and then like the hole gets smaller and so you have to like use a hammer to bang ⁓ in. You can't get ⁓ out 'cause the they just put all the shelves back in like wherever. You don't need all your shelves. Like never. Do ⁓ you know, minimal a few. And you have more space between, it just looks nicer. So that's what I did. But I had to This is ⁓ Brittany saying less is more from the girl who more is always more. So it's an oxymoron around here. If you don't leave this podcast confused, then you're not doing it right. It's all about what you put on the shelf. Correct. But height is good. Yeah. How do you feel about the bookshelf not being asymmetrical? Ooh. Fine. Like actually today I was like, ooh. 'Cause I was like, do I do ⁓ different? I don't know. I did the one I did today, I did the same. Yeah. Because it was the shelves weren't really that wide and kind of closer together. I mean the fireplace was between. But I don't know. It felt like it needed to be symmetrical ⁓ today. But sometimes I do sometimes it's just a metric feeling. And it depends on the accessory. If I have like a piece of art I'm putting in the bookshelf or like something taller and I need like Something big here and something big here, then I'd do it opposite. So we're gonna do a whole I think a whole podcast on that. Or we've also done like reels and stuff, but yeah. People are always interested in that. And there's a whole rules thing that I don't ever follow. But Brittany's gonna tell you the rule and I'm gonna tell you how that's stupid. But that's that's how we do things. I mean, like, sometimes you follow the rule, but like not all the time. I mean you still Follow the rule, but at the end of the day, like but there's like little Yeah, do this nuances. Yeah, little nuances. Right where I know I'm making stuff up here, I guess. I feel like that's right. We're gonna get with that. But every time I take a see you should have pre game for the beer first and then just margarita. So I was like, I need something refreshing because I was hop. Mm-hmm. So I got an organic cucumber margarita. That sounds like trash. And every sip I take has cucumbers in it infused with tequila. And it's you wanna taste it? No. Whew. That's strong. Maybe we'll be bleeping out Britney and not me. Yeah. I just want a strawberry. I'm taking it slow. anyway, what were you talking about? So ⁓ Yeah. So many things. I think we started out with a ladder. A ladder. Yeah. ⁓ so yeah, that we should get one of those ladders. ⁓ well I've been doing we have scaffolding, but like I'm about to upgrade our scaffolding game because I'm about to live on a scaffold for about six weeks. Yeah. So I've been doing you know me, extensive research. ⁓ I'm probably about twenty hours in at this point. Now it is about to be Faux finishing in her sleep. So that's I gotta represent my I've put on my f my faux reel shirt because I'm trying to get in the mindset of faux finishing because it's been a while, which this has a cute backstory. I went to tell us about well for those that are just listening and not watching it's a I said watching. Watching. It says And I'm the problem. ⁓ faux like F A U X reel. Yes, which I thought was a term that everyone knew. That's another story. That's another story. But so my husband bought me a Christmas gift. I had been Venetian plastering our house at the time and not even a house. Honestly, it was a trailer, which love that cute little trailer. That's how I saved up all my monies and opened this. business and like bought the house and like did things cause shout out to mother in law and my cute little four hundred dollar rent trailer. Like love it. But I gutted and remodeled that whole thing. Yeah. So I practiced Venetian plaster for about nine years, I feel like. And I don't know, I was self taught and just learned and just And it had all that horrible paneling that I had to tape and spackle and all kind it's not spackle, but I don't know any words right now. So ⁓ so I practiced, I learned Venetian plaster, I was so proud of myself. And then for Christmas he bought me a week long class in Austin with a professional Venetian plasterer. I think I might have got offended. I was like, I feel like I'm a professional now at this point, but okay. Well, did you learn anything new when you went? She said I was more advanced than she. I was like, let me show you how to do this here. No, I did learn, I did learn things, but you know me, I always have to pretend like I'm smarter than the person trying to teach me something, so that's on me. But ⁓ I did learn. But I also was like, Christmas is like for fun stuff. Like I don't want to go to school for Christmas, just FYI. But that was very thoughtful. Circle back on that. But then he wanted to send me by myself to Austin for a week and I said, That's not happening. So he did end up coming with me. So he just ⁓ had fun. He won't like all day? It was all day. Like ⁓ the longest days ever. And so by the time you got back, you like 8 a.m. to like six, seven. And then on the last day it was like 10 o'clock because things didn't dry in time and he was on 6th Street living his best life. He had a great Christmas present. But ⁓ he did come back. He one day he went shopping, he went to Nordstrom's and Sacks and he brought in all these bags and he was like, Look, I bought you a gift. And I was thinking, ⁓ it's gonna be something fancy. It was a shirt. He thought it was so clever. I was like, Hey Kyle. That is. now that that's probably like ten years ago. So like now I'm like, ⁓ that's funny to me. That day it was not funny. I was like, I've never seen you wear this shirt. I hope Kyle's not listening. There's a up you wear. I also see I Brady tells me I need to perch my closet all the time and I'm like, they have memories. The clothes have memories. So I don't know what to do about it because I can't Even if I cussed him out when he gave it to me, it's still funny now. So I won't get rid of it. And no, that's why it is very I probably I'd probably wore it once or twice. But it's just funny to me. But I put it on today thinking it just made me chuckle this morning for some reason, which I don't know why I just said chuckle. But I then walked through my living room, which my mom and dad are visiting from Texas. They're technically New Mexico, but that's neither here nor there. and they were FaceTiming family, and ⁓ my aunt was like, What does Hillary's shirt say? And I was like, and my sister says, ⁓ it says, I'm faux real. It's it's Cajun. It's like No. I was like, I thought faux was like a universal term. I was like, I'm pretty sure it's French. And they were like, Well, it's French Cajun. I like, That's not what that means either, though. Like, no. And then I was like, Fo ⁓ yeah. So I are they just used to like are they now anything that has an X on it is now Cajun. And I was like, That's not how that works. We're just getting familiar with everybody's last names. Yeah, she was like, I you know the boudres tip it is and I like, they have X's and I was like, That doesn't mean they're that it's French, not Cajun. But we're still learning. Still learning. I've been here 13 years, so yeah, she's only been here a year. We're gonna give her a grace, I guess. Yeah. Also, I don't think anyone in my family knew what it meant either. And I'm like, just fake. I thought everyone knew what though meant. So that was it was I was confused. And then I was like, do people not know what the shirt means when I wear it? Like it's a joke. I think I think most the majority probably cool. also Venetian plaster is not even fair finishing because it's like real plaster. It's real marble, real limestone. But for something in my head, it just makes me I I just feel like I need to say that. ⁓ speaking of, did you get your ⁓ custom color situation down yet? I'm working on that. I kinda need you to not call me out on the podcast. Check When are you starting that again? Like in a week or two. Okay. It's gonna be beautiful. It's gonna be fantastic. Well, so the client held off on the painting for the bedroom because I don't know, he keeps saying this budget word. It's really ticking me off. And so he said maybe we'll circle back in August and add that to. The invoice. And so I was like, I understand that because we wanted to do all the main areas first. And so the bedroom, he was like, People aren't gonna be walking through here. So I you know, obviously focus on the key pieces. And so and then we also told him that like doing the walls and the draperies and everything to make his bedroom function would be more important than art on the wall. But like the art is kind of where we got the inspiration for the plaster color. And then like you're gonna have to take all the draperies that install ⁓ and then uninstall ⁓ and then Venetian plaster and then reinstall ⁓ like So he said yes to the plaster, yes to the draperies, no to the art and I went, Ugh Okay, I see you. I understand you. I'm gonna order the art anyways because he's gonna say yes. And if not it's beautiful. So we'll sell it somewhere else. But I would like to pick the color from and I don't know, I feel like I want to see the art in person, in front, before I decide on a lot of plaster. I know. And it's like we No, I mean, I we do this all the time and like we'll pick something out from you know the internet and we're like, It was stress about it and it'll come in, it'll like spot on. We're like, I mean, we are so good at this. Sorry, what's the marker? But I'm like, so I I know I could pick it, but for some reason it made me a little nerve. Like I just wanted to see it. I felt like I was gonna get inspiration from it. So many different variations of the color. It's yeah. Yeah. It's it's gonna be And it's just gonna be fancy enough to be perfect. And then I'm gonna have to be like, look at this art. How could you not put it on your wall? Yeah. Not to mention we also have already ⁓ told the advocate we were using that room as our marketing and so I kinda need it finished. Yeah. So we're gonna figure that out. Surprise. ⁓ yeah. Yeah, I'm gonna we're gonna ask you about that at the next minute and get your approval. Man, I'm funny today. ⁓ okay, so plaster. Yes. Just working working on it. Yeah. Scaffolding. Yep, yep. so But I have been or so many orders. It's gonna be like Christmas in here pretty soon. Not Christmas things, but though might no. Which is also probably something we should talk about, but not today. But Actually July. Yeah. I think I just threw up. Sorry. ⁓ let's let's move on. So we have like this favorite company that we order from for mostly us. I they have everything, but I think I blew her socks off. yeah, the I think she thinks our computer glitched. The rep emailed us and was like, Wow, are you okay? Thanks for the order. I'm like it's like Hillary, what'd you order? Everything. So we'll have a lot of beautiful accessories coming in. ⁓ I'm not saying that they are ⁓ budget friendly though. They are beautiful. It's so hard. It's so And I mean this in the nicest way. ⁓ I've been so enthralled with beautiful sculptural accessories that when I have to go look at any other company, I just know it's so hard after you look at the like so all like all of our other manufacturers knock off this company because their just stuff's just like the best and it's very quality and it just looks artsy. Like things that you just have never seen before and you're like I've been doing this for how many twenty years and it's like yeah everything always looks the same like ⁓ yay a new face but now it has blue spots instead of they're still just like every market it was like it was my favorite showroom because they're it takes like all day to go do showroom literally all day. ⁓ and they don't even have booze at their market. I want to talk about that though. I mean they do have a pretty good lunch. But I'm saying usually we know the cake pops and the and the booze. They only have like ice and tea I know. I think I got a coffee because I was cold. If they were smart, I mean since the showroom's so big, if they have like little like little stands in each room. Kind of like ⁓ what is a a Mini where they have a little gelato guy that was pushing a cart and ⁓ the little if they had the ones that ha have booze, I buy the most at the people visit and you spend more. 'Cause Brittany's spending it and usually I'm like the grumpy dad in the corner that's like, How much is that? What are you gonna do with that? Like, how are you gonna use it? Are you gonna sell it? We have a client for that. ⁓ my god. I'm like, just shut your cake hole and let me You said that to me? No, I'll think I thought it. Exactly. So it's whenever I'm a little tipsy that I'm like You do you. You got those. It's so fun. I'm like, yes, I want one of those. I want two of those. I want three of those. It's fun. We should let's go back soon. Yeah. We definitely need to. We went on a market hiatus 'cause of Estelle. Yes. I mean we should put that on her. ⁓ Yes. Technically the last time we tried to go to market I was pregnant and snow and ⁓ my gosh. And I was fat and uncomfortable and I was so frustrated. And Brittany was like, should we like go the next day? And I was like, it's canceled. Like the market in general is just canceled. So much snow. I was like, I feel like this is a sign. I my little fat feet were so they hurt so bad. I was gonna cry the whole time. I didn't get out of the airport. We spent so much money on food in the airport. I was like, this trip is gonna be crazy. Is that the time we missed our flight? We didn't miss the no. That was the time we were at the airport ready to go and they just kept cancel like pushing it back and then they were like, No, it's cancelled I'm like, We've been in this airport for seven hours and we have like a five hundred dollar tab on food. We've got to go home. And then we drove home and went to Olive Garden. Y'all, there's a problem. How do you not remember this? This is hilarious. Also that you do. That's crazy. If you're gonna get me out for Italian, I want some ⁓ no, but every now and then that salad and breadsticks it's just it's just a it's a go to, you know, it's a Is that what you get when you go to Olive Garden? Italian breadsticks. Yeah. And like five sauces with the breadsticks. And then you just go and eat salad and breadsticks. I mean sometimes I get my meal. They always get you on that buy w take one home. I know like, who has BOGO food? Like this is crazy. And like we should already we should already be questioning everything about it. Last time I went they were Do you want soup, salad, and breaststicks to take home and Lane got a meal and he rela we have when they start doing refills on your wine I guess now for lunch tomorrow, like that but like something about it makes me nervous that they do BOGO food. I know, like what's happening there? Like how are they making I mean pasta is pretty inexpensive. Yes. And Italian is a lot like Mexican. It's all the same ingredients, just re constructed like in a different dish. Yeah. I don't know. They're probably now I have anyways back to ⁓ okay, so I know we ordered, I mean, a lot of stuff for this huge project, but what did you order for the showroom? So we know what to expect. I didn't get to see that. ⁓ I did y'all a favor and did more girl math, so just saying. ⁓ rate and girl. So market just I don't know. I feel like market's now coming up, but they they're acting like market just passed. One of our companies is getting rid of rid of their samples from market. And so it's kinda like a buy, hurry up and buy it and I give you a discount. So I set a budget. We did not stick to the budget. So that was a small problem. But with this company it's hard. With I mean the other company that we just ordered from that you're speaking of, it's also hard because a lot of it was for the client and then she said, Well you're at a freight cap because it's such a high order, and then all of a sudden, don't tell me that. That's like add this, add that. ⁓ right. Brittany was like, what do I need for myself? I was like, that's not what I was wanting. I was like, don't even look. Don't look. I knew. That was surprising. Also, I didn't give her any time. I was like, sorry, I submitted it. I thought about looking this weekend and being like, hey, can you ask You could probably. Don't tell me that. But I also am gonna have to order more because I don't think I ordered enough accessories, but for the house or for the for the house? Yeah. I didn't do much for the I did do some for the showroom. I e. but I ordered art. Well, I didn't do much for the showroom because we have like five other companies we need to order from. Yeah. And those orders are a little smaller, so I wanted to pump those up to get better freight. And so that would be showroom items. We do have like more, like in the showroom, we have more budget friendly items with a little of the high end mixed in, just so we have like a good mix. So we do need to order some other but the art you're referring to is good pricing. Correctly. And I mean it's also it was discounted so that I extend those to the to ⁓ our clients. You're welcome. Correct. And ⁓ Brittany was she has been doing a lot of accessorizing and I went on the showroom floor the other day and she was like frustrated and I was like, I okay, I get it. Like maybe I've been on a little option. Spending hi or not a spending hi yeah, spending hiatus. And so I was like, Okay, I guess I'll give you like a few accessories. And ⁓ you were fussing the other day because you wanted art to put in bookshelves, which Yeah. It's hard to find. And so this company had some good like sixteen by twenty. Yeah. So I By the way, don't be scared to put like art. You can hang things in your bookshelf, isn't that bookshelf on the face of your bookshelf? Like give it some dimension. Yeah. You know? That's actually my favorite thing. Uhhuh. Me too. Which I need to 'cause when I did my bookshelves, I ⁓ mine are glass and permanent. So I had to make a big commitment on Venetian plaster. There was a lot of freak out moments in that whole experience. but I have like a diving mask that's in it. So it's gigantic, but you can't just put another gigantic thing next to it. So it mine is really difficult to accessorize because yeah, so really I need to hang things on the wall. Venetian plaster. I mean, you gotta do what you gotta do. Yeah. I know this the ⁓ You're gonna put art all over the Venetian plaster. I'm about to do actually both of the bookshelves I did this week, this S Rising I did, we did wallpaper in the back of the bookshelves. Mm-hmm, which I love to do, as you can tell. ⁓ It is a signature. You like to wallpaper, put art, and then put accessories in front of the art. Less is more is what how she started this podcast. Less is more. Because all of that, that's why you do less shelves. Word because that one has like a hundred things on the one shelf. No, I did simple s it's okay. Well, today I did it's more simple. But Wednesday she's kinda like me. I feel like she's more of a more as more. So that's what I went with. She had the option to narrow it down and she said, I wanna keep it all. So That's why we love her. Yay me. I'll let you know next week how it turns out for today's install. ⁓ but yeah, we did I love doing like a not a busy pattern, but just something like with texture and color to give context. Ooh, I love the one we have that's like mirror almost. Yeah. It's like reflective. So I mean it's almost like an acid wall like it's like antique mirror. You can't see it. But you but I it's a vault covering, so ⁓ but It just puts especially if you have a light in your bookshelf. ⁓ that's what the install I did Wednesday we have a couple of lamps. She had outlets. The install I did today did not have any outlets. That is one thing that no one thinks about and you should definitely do it. Even if you're not putting lamps on your bookshelves for like Christmas. You might want to Christmas as always. Or like your mantle is next to it. You can easily run an extension cord behind some stuff. That is genius to put an outlet in your bookshelf. Very small thing to think about, but so easy. Yeah. When you're building too, especially. Correct. ⁓ yes. So and then too, I really love Yeah, I put mine in after it was built, so they had to run it through my fireplace. They loved me. Like it was fantastic. ⁓ I also love putting like the LED recess lights in the shelving. So where it's like Or that with a picture light. Yes. Now I'm just doing the most. Mm-hmm. Yeah, so it was ⁓ It was good, but we also did furniture. And we do do that. Two living rooms and kind of partial dining area. So we'll be posting that in the coming weeks so you can see the after yep pictures. One of ⁓ was actually we did years ago. I don't even know how many years ago. We did her house. It was a full many years ago. It was a full remodel. If she's watching at first I was a little sad because I was like, Maybe she didn't love the first design, but then she came back to us, so maybe she does love it. I don't know. I did have like a freak out moment when Br you said that I was about to talk about us in third person for some reason. Like we're not here. like she was like, We're gonna redo her living room. We're like, We just did it. but she even said like seven years ago, six years. It was but so it's like six. When we first That seems like so like it does not feel like it was that far away. But when we first did it, she wasn't sure if she wanted a sectional or like a sofa and a recliner. And I think her husband was like, No, like I have to have a recliner like most of them. And so we ended up doing the sofa and recliner. And then ⁓ after they lived in it for six plus years, she was like, I need something to lounge on. Like the sofa's just not doing it for me. And so we did a sectional with a chase on one end. And her living room is kind of odd. Like the island comes out at an angle. So I did so many space blanks, so many drawings and so many different sectional options to find one that fit like perfectly. so that's what we did. So they just wanted like a different layout and we did a little bit different, well, a lot different accent color and just finished it up. So we switched out our pillows. Cause like the first time we did it, we did mostly like neutral for like the big important stuff. And so ⁓ we just really switched out her like her rug, her throw pillows, and of course the the sectional was new. We like drapery still works, that sort of thing still works. So still kept the same paint, drapery, and then like the dining banket and all of that. Which banket was a Yeah, it's still very pretty. Yeah, love that piece. So So yeah, it was fun, kinda re f like a little refresh. Refresh. Which I mean when you say seven years, it just She also did her bedroom in between there. And I think that even was like a two part. So I feel like her outdoor area, part of her outdoor area. So I just feel like I'm like a it just she's here and I'm going I I just I want her to love her space. So that I feel like that It's a normal amount of time that someone but I was like, ⁓ no, does she not love it? And I like, why would she come back? Are you crazy, right? That's my I don't know if that's is it Capricorn or ADH? Here I go with all my terminology and labels, but ⁓ I just assume everyone hates everything, so I assume they love it. Love that for you. Your life is just so different than mine. ⁓ Your headspace is just not the same. And when they tell me they don't like something, I'm like That's on you, boom. I don't know what to tell you. I don't ⁓ know. I love it. No, I fix it. Okay. Most of the time. She still says that, but she still fixes it. Okay. So I don't know, before we get in trouble. Mm-hmm. I'm gonna exit this podcast. This is actually probably the part that y'all want to see, but not today. Huh? We didn't cost one time. ⁓ I know. I thought you said we didn't cost no one no dime or something. I don't the words are slurring together at this point. Good for you. My tongue is numb. Does tequila do that to you? Like my it makes my tongue numb. No?
