Dr. Dean Alley PhD: All right, Chaplain Dean Alley. I had a moment. I hope you're doing well today. Happy Thursday. I just wanted to jump on here and talk to you a little bit about chapter nine of Genesis as we walk through the scriptures. Now remember, excuse me, we are walking through the scriptures and we're going verse by verse because people have asked me to do so. And I'm doing Best I can as I go through these. And just to kind of recap, we did we did chapter eight yesterday. We're getting ready to do chapter nine. And let's just walk this. So we talked about in Genesis 1 the creation, and we listed out all the days specifically what was going to happen, you know, fifth, sixth, seventh creation of man, all that in chapter one, and then in ver Chapter two, we learned on the seventh day we're to rest. And then we learned that some more information about the Garden of Eden. and you remember when I talked to you about the gap theory and I mentioned that There was fallen angels and things on that line. And that is in the Bible. And we know that because Satan was in the garden. If you read Ezekiel. So Satan was already here or on earth or in the garden before Adam. Just so you know. And we read that in Ezekiel. So we talked about the garden, we talked about what we're supposed to do, we're supposed to work, right? And we talked about marriage, the creation of women. or woman. woman was taken from the same. I I I talked about the institution of what marriage was and how important it was. and then we got into chapter three. We talked about that temptation, that that fall of man, that that sinful nature that we are now living with with the fall of man. And we learned that there was curses behind that, just like anything else, there's consequences. I've said it lots of times. Certain decisions will last a lifetime. Eve and Adam's decision, and Adam had full control of himself and he knew what he was doing, sinned, and that consequence was turned over to us. And then we read he was basically kicked out or sent away from the Garden of Eden. and then we learned about his their children, Cain and Abel, right? And we learned that Abel was murdered by Cain because of the offering. And then we know that again, God was He do, He can't tolerate sin, just like when he kicked out Adam and Eve from the garden and put the cherubim with the flaming sword so you can't go back in there, which we'll see all the way back. Is all about the kingdom of heaven and Jesus is the theme and he's the one that comes and takes away that sinful nature by going on the cross and dying for your sin and my sins, past, present, and future. And the good part is even back then there was a plan, and we saw that in Genesis three fifteen where we got a glimpse of the Savior or the Lord. And We know Jesus, he's all through the Old Testament. He's not called Jesus. Jehovah is what he's typically called through the old testament. He's called Jesus or Jesus or however you want to say it in in Greek. then we talked about that the mark that was put on Cain, which wasn't I don't think a physical mark. I think the mark was if anybody hurt him or killed him, there would be seven seven times the curse put on them. And He becomes a nomad. Obviously, they are they were filling up the earth and there was, you know, back then I think the you know, when he created man and women, and we get through those first two chapters, everything was good. And I think that the gene genealogy or the physiology of a person was pretty much clean because they were gonna he intended it for him to live forever. So obviously people ask me all the time, well. How did how did they procreate with people? Well, they, you know, sisters and and and then sisters of sisters and then it populated from there. you gotta remember that each chapter takes a little bit of time. It's not like it's bam, bam, bam, bam, bam. It's not like fifth days, six days, I mean there was time frames that remember that God lives or he is outside of time, space and matter. He doesn't live in the realm that we live. Okay. So we talked about that. That was in chapter six. And we we looked at some of Adam's descendants that came from him. we know that Seth, and then we know there was Enos, you know, and then there was the a bunch of more bunch more and I'll I'll talk a little bit about that. And then they had long life, right? They had a long life and because remember God created us to be with him forever and we weren't supposed to die. And when sin sin entered When the the serpent was right, your eyes will be open and you will start to have a conscience, you start to have all these things that we have today when we sin. And before then, almost think of a childlike innocence as what you were in those days with in the garden, the first couple chat or in the early going on. So we talked about that, we talked about man's wickedness in six. we talked about building the ark, remember? Building the ark took about a hundred and twenty years to build, and we probably hired people to help him. he built it the way that God had told him and God has ways of communicating. He he gives us messages, he gives promises in his scripture, he gives us commandments to follow, and he also gives us things such as prophecies or things that will happen, if you will. So he builds it, God protects him, brings he tells him to put two by two, fills it up, and what happens? He sh he basically they start entering the ark in chapter seven, and then God closes the doors to protect him and the family of Noah, his wife, and you know, the children of of him. So he was a righteous man in God's Go God's eyes. So we saw that. Then he basically starts unleashing Right. You know, God God Himself when we talk about repenting Let me just say people get sometimes twisted on the word repenting. Okay. So I like to look at it as a change of mind. God had a change of mind with the human race when he saw all the wickedness. So there was a change of mind with with God. And when you accept And put your faith, hope, and belief systems in Jesus Christ, knowing that He came for you and He died, He was buried, He raised three days later, and He's our living Savior today. you know, 1 Corinthians 15, 1 through 4 is the clearest presentation of the gospel, in my opinion. And because it was written to the church, it was written to the Gentile. That's the reason I use that I pulled that out. so He unleashes the flood. He puts all this, you know, from the skies, from the ground, I mean, up from the oceans. I mean, there was so much water that it just covered all of Earth. And everything was destroyed. And what I like about we're gonna get in chapter nine talking about what he It had to sadden him. Have you ever had a situation where you were saddened by somebody that was close to you? It just saddens you. I'm sure he was very saddened that he had to take people at and and destroy And you say this, we have choices. That's the key. And some people think he's a right terrible. No, he's a righteous God. Okay? He's a righteous God. He can't allow sin. He can't be in front of it. That's why he turned his back on Christ when he was on the cross. And and you remember the words we read where he's like, God, you for you know why have you forsaken me? He couldn't be with him. Well folks, that's an example of people that don't want to be with him in eternity. Those people will be separated and he will turn from them. And to me, that's the worst feeling in the world is to have no hope in any of that. So then we talked about the water starter prevailed, he puts out the raven, and then he sends the dove, the dove flies a little bit lower. the raven doesn't come back, but the the dove does on the second time has a olive branch, symbolism there of peace. So it's used today, a symbol of peace, of that. And that ark rested. on the mountain ranges of Arat in that area. Okay. And then he basically has them get to the point we're in chapter eight, where they're going to leave and they they get they've just left, they come out, and very first thing Noah does is he does a sacrifice. What's the big deal on sacrifices? Okay. When Adam and Eve sinned and they were ashamed that a conscience they saw themselves naked and they were they were afraid he had to cover them and to do that he had to I believe slaughter a lamb or have a lamb kill take those skins and cover them up because of the the shame they felt because of the conscience they now saw We had that same conscience today. So there was a bit of a blood sacrifice by killing animals and putting the skins on. Point in making that was the start of why Israel slaughtered or brought animals to the altar and why they did all these ceremonial things all through the Old Testament. The beautiful thing. Is that we see when Jesus comes, he becomes the propitiation. What does that mean? He becomes the person that takes all the sin that you and I deserved, and it's brought on him. And he is slain of blood, you know, with the crown, stabbing, all the things he went through. He now becomes the blood of the lamb, which is he's the lamb, and he is sacrificing himself. For you and me. And when you get that picture and you start to really understand that, read that scripture over and over, it should humble you, it should sadden you, and see the the the the amount of things that he went through for us. And it says you know he a man that knew no sin took the sin for us, we see. And we didn't we as as people today. They continue to get further and further and further away. I I love my wife, she gave me this little thing. I got a little Jesus today. I had a guy come out and replaced some water today. I gave him a s give him a little bit of Jesus. Because you really can't come on this property without hearing about it. Anyways, because God has blessed us to have it. So I think people should know about it. That's what you should be doing. Tell people, show people, and if you are in the Word, in the Bible. You should be discipling your children, your grandchildren, anybody that'll that you can make disciples, right? That's what we're supposed to be doing. What's my purpose, Chaplin? Well, I mean love God with all your heart, mind, soul, body, and all that. And then your neighbor, which is easier said than done, but then you're to make those disciples. You're to read the Bible, you're to pray, you're to you're to continue in the faith, you're to have a relationship because that's what God wants. He wants to bless you. Now, you're gonna get into a situation where you don't like certain things. I certainly don't like to be corrected or chastised, and we have to be sometimes to grow. And some people, it's different for certain people. there's no cut and dry. God is the author of that, and but sometimes you have to say, Well, what is he trying to show me? What is it that I need to be doing or or not doing that he wants me to be closer to him? So you have to think about why some of these things come up. So now we are at chapter nine. So let's get into it. And let me just do a quick little prayer, Lord. Be with this little little Bible study, chapter nine. Genesis, Lord, your word. Let us proclaim you and and and read what you want us to know. You root you. You put this in the Bible. You inspired men. And Moses wrote this to tell to to show us what you wanted us to know and and what was important. So Lord, help me that I'm able to articulate. Don't let me leave anything out, Lord, and and help me not add anything from my personal viewpoint, but from the scripture. And I ask all these things in Jesus' precious name. Amen. Thank you. All right. So we're gonna start off. God blesses Noah, okay. That's a message, but the first message in chapter one. And I'm gonna read, and God blessed Noah and his sons, and he said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth. Did you catch that? Replenish because it was plenished once, destroyed, and he comes out and it's probably just barren and you know. That was the ice age. I don't, I don't know. I wasn't there, but the key here is refill the earth. And that's the message God gives him right up front in verse one. And he tells Noah this. And then verse two, and he says, And the fear of you and dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air. Upon all that moveth upon the earth and upon the f all the fishes of the sea into your hands are delivered. Now why would God say that? Well, think about it. Had he not put fear into all of the animals, they probably would have killed themselves and killed man. And even today most almost every animal unless they've got you know rabies or something, they'll run from you. Almost any animal, their first and their first incline is what? Is to run from a human. Run from the man. Well, where do you get that? Well that's in nine verse nine or chapter nine verse two. He basically puts that out there and that that com that command out there is basically you're going to have dominion over them and they're all delivered into your hand. They're given to you. So they're They're gonna be afraid of you, and I've said it before, they're more afraid of you than you are of them. All right. So to be fruitful. They're to replenish. They're to have that dominion. God puts fear into the animals to run away from to run away from from man when they see him, when they feel like there's a You know, they see them, they run. I mean, I got a cat like that. Skittish. All right, so verse three: every moving thing that liveth shall be meat, which means food, for you, even as the green herb have I given all things. This is a new diet. Before the flood, there was a lot of vegetarian type. food, if you will. in Mediterranean, maybe or but a very much a vegetable or or herb type diet man had. Now he's talking about everything therein, you can now eat it. And that is a new diet. You now can introduce meat. And he goes on to say, but anytime you see but in the Bible we need a pause, what does he want to say? He says you can you can eat meat even even as the herb as was given to you for all time all things. So that was prior to the flood. And he says, but flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof shall ye not eat. You're getting a picture here, folks. You want to talk about blood is considered in antiquity or in in that time frame or even through the Old Testament, the lifeline of everything. It is today. It's a representation. Blood's used to signify a lifeline or something. But you're not to eat it. You're not to you're not to to to be eating blood. So people going around eating blood, we shouldn't be. because we're hearing it here that we're not to. And I I'll let that set wherever you want to see, but I mean if you like a bloody steak, I mean that's all something else. I'm thinking I'm thinking he's saying just you're at a point here where you can eat the food that you used to eat was all herbs type stuff, and now you can eat flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood, that's life is blood, I mentioned, thereof you shall not eat. So th you can eat the meat, don't eat the blood. That's what he's saying. Life is of blood. And verse four says, But flesh these are commands by the way. God is commanding man. But the flesh okay, you will not eat. Verse five, and surely your blood of your lives will require at the hand of every beast will I require it sacrifice and at the hand of man, at the hand of every man's brother, will I require the life of a man? and then he goes on to say, Whoever shut it. So now you're getting the picture of if you're gonna kill a man, I'm gonna require your life. So we're kind of getting an early, early picture here of a boundary. You don't go kill, you know, another human being. And he's he's he's saying that So thou shalt not kill. You know, that's in our Mosaic law. And Verse 7 says, And you be ye fruitful again. Fruitful was used in verse or chapter four. Remember, that was a blessing from God. That was a command of a blessing that be fruitful, right? Fruitful is what he's saying. And multiply, bring, bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein. So that that is a blessing that God has given. And when We have children, what do we say? That child that's born is a blessing, right? Well God's given us the blessing to do this and multiply. Then we get into where God's gonna talk about the covenant with Noah. And God spake unto Noah, so he's talking to him, and to the sons with him, saying, And I behold, or I look, I establish my covenant with you. Catch that? My covenant. And your and with your seed after you, establishing it with Noah, and then afterwards it's going to be with your seed. And that is so forth. And Then he goes on to saying basically, It's an internal pledge. This is the disagreement I have with some of my colleagues is when God makes a covenant, they say, Well those are all gone. Disagree the covenant he made with Noah. we're gonna pick it up in 12. And what was that covenant? We'll talk about it. but this is an eternal pledge. it was for the natural, for the people, for with your seed, and with every living creature that is with you, a foul cattle, beast of the earth with you from all that go out of the ark, so everything that left the ark. says here, left the ark to every beast on earth. He's talking so he's giving you he's giving us a prophecy here. And I will establish my covenant again with you, neither all flesh will be cut off anymore by what? Waters of the flood. He's he's not going to cut off anymore or take any lives with the flood waters, is what he's saying. Neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth. He's pretty clear, he's laying it out. you know, this covenant is is God, it's Noah, it's his seed, and all living creatures. That is a that is for eternity. Okay, so Noah may not be on the earth, his his children may not be on, but the seed continues. Even today, there's seeds of that lineage and Know and he's and and God, he's still an active God and then all living creatures. Well, if you're living today, you're still under that covenant. He's not gonna destroy this world with water again. And that is what he's saying here with a promise. He's giving he's giving that prophecy here by saying, I'm gonna make that covenant. This is a prom I'm gonna keep it, it's eternal. By the way, this is my promise. He says, I will establish and I will neither cut off any more because of. So then he gives him another message, and we get into verse twelve I was alluding to. And God said, Okay, think about that. And God said, What is he doing? He's given a message directly to who? Noah. When he was on the ark, folks, for a while, I don't think God communicated with him because he was pretty busy. Maybe he did, maybe but I don't see anywhere where I mean it was pretty quiet as they were just hearing the rain and the water and tossing and all that stuff. I don't think there was a lot of communication. Then he says, This is the token, or maybe a sign, this is the sign or token of the covenant which I make between me and you and every creature that is with you. Perpetual and what does it say, what does it say? For perpetual. Perpetual means continual. Continual. Generations. Understand my colleagues would disagree. that covenant's gone. It's no longer there. I beg to differ. I think it's a perpetual generation. Why do I say that? Because verse 12 tells me that in verse in chapter 9. Then he says, I do set my bow, which he's alluding to what? The rainbow, right? He's re talking about the rainbow in the clouds. And it shall be a token or a sign of this covenant between me and you, or me and the earth, and it's a reminder, right? So it's a reminder to what? I'm never gonna destroy this world with water again. He's gonna do it again next time, it's gonna be with fire. But this is what he's saying in chapter nine. And the bow, which the Hebrew word is. Gasetheth means to bend. I think it's used like fifty, fifty-four different times in the old testament, but it's it's to bend or bow. And when he says bow, it's what he's doing. That's that rainbow that you see after rain, right? After we have a storm or rain and and then that you have in the in the clouds and in the atmosphere, you see this beautiful color of rainbows. No, that is not for your pride events. No, it's not for anything other than a reminder of what God Himself did to promise He'd never do it again, not to use it as a symbol of of a orientation of a lifestyle that some people lead to. And and that's that's exactly what it is. It's a it's an orientation because you weren't born that way. so I do set my bow, and this is in the remembrance. And then he goes on to say in verse 14, and I shall come to pass when I bring a cloud, right? I talked about after the rain, brings a cloud over the earth. the that the bow shall be seen in the cloud. So you're gonna see what? See, he's telling you, all you weather people out there, all you people that want to know about science. Here's a bit of science for you. In the cloud he will bring that rainbow after what? Rain. Okay. I maintain that also that there was no rain in the in the world from Eden to Eden to Noah's day. It hadn't rained. God missed it. He he missed it things to keep things and things going. There was no thorn and thistle. There was no pricked put your hands in a rose bush and get pricked by a thorn. There was nothing like that. It was a perfect world. And sin entered in and then Things started to change and change, I think, for the worse, and just continually getting bad. So, and I will remember my covenant, which is another what? Promise. I will remember my covenant. Which is between me and you and every living creature of the flesh, and the water shall no more become the flood and destroy all flesh. Verse sixteen, and the bow, rainbow, shall be in the cloud. I will look upon it that I remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of flesh that is upon the earth. I will look at it. So if you're looking at a rainbow or you see a rainbow, God says, I'm gonna be looking at it too, and I'm gonna be looking at it in remembrance of something that I did. He repented, turned away from man, did something. I'm sure it saddened him that he's not gonna do that again. And this is my promise. This is what I'm saying. And then he says, Verse 17, he gives us another, and God said, Okay, God said, pretty clear, unto who? Noah, this is the token or the sign of a covenant, or of the covenant which I have established between me and the flesh that is upon the earth. So we get that picture of what God is saying. So he's he's he's Got a prom he's he gives us a message in 12. 13, he gives us a promise. 14, he gives us another promise. 15, 16, he gives us another promise, and then he gives us a message. All to talk about the the rainbow and then the the command and message. Folks, chapter nine of Genesis has a lot of stuff going on there. Prophecy, command, message. There's lots of stuff out there that we're looking at. as we we work through the Bible here. So let's get into verse eighteen. Another reminder this is just a reminder verse again. He's just making I mean, I don't know if it's just to give us security that we won't be flooded out again. Now I'm not saying that Dams don't overflow and things like that and all this other stuff. there's floods, but they're not worldwide flood. And the sons of Noah that went forth of the ark or left the ark were who? Shem and Ham and Japheth, and Ham is the father of Canaan. Why does he pause there and say, why does he start off with he's the father of Canaan? Well we're going to learn a little bit here. Calls out specifically Ham. And we learn as we get down through these next few verses why he's given us a reminder. And these are the three sons, which is Ham, Hashem, Ham, and Japheth. These are the three sons of Noah, and of them was the whole earth overspread or to be populated, is what he's saying. And I know it's old English. How I remember them, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, I always remember that Shem, Shemanite, is the line of Christ. That's kinda how I can remember it. That's just a little thing I do. It's not nothing I read. I just that's what I I kind of can remember it. I know that Ham is the one that we're gonna learn in these next few verses, it gets cursed. And then Japheth I remember, Know he's the one that is gonna go to the a lot of the Mediterranean seas, the coast and stuff. We'll learn about that. So what does it say? Let's talk about verse 20. This is gonna be a little bit about Noah and his drunkenness. Now and Noah began to be an husbandman. Okay, a lot of the Bible in the old testament is written for like farming, agriculture. A lot of the symbolism, a lot of the comparisons have farming type backgrounds and words and things that so when the people because who was this written to? Remember I taught you there's three types of people in the Bible Israel, the Jewish nation. Israel, Gentile, and Church, right? You have Israel and Jewish people are being written to right here. They're being written to to tell them the story, and it is written to the Jew, but it is for us. For us to know. God wanted us to know that. It was written directly to Israel, but it is written also for us and for the church, you know, the Gentile, Yeah, so let's let's continue on here. So He's a husband. He plants what? A vineyard. Well, this is the first mention of a vineyard in the Bible, which is what Noah. Noah apparently had a talent for vineyards, I guess. And then he drank it says he and he drank of the wine and it was drunken, and he was uncovered within his tent. So you got drunk, you passed out. And Ham, the father of Canaan, Canaan is the land that is given to promise for Israel, saw the nakedness of his father and told his two brethren that were without. In other words, they weren't there. what he's done now is he's seen his father. That is a people go, well, what was the big deal? What did he do? He broke the law of parental authority. something you just didn't do is stare upon your parents in the naked state and that's breaking the authority of. So that's the reason why he was cursed. And I would say this too. He was uncovered within the tent. And later on, I don't know what the tent, but the tent basically was one of the offsprings later on, Jabal was his name, J A B A L with apostrophe in the middle. invented the tent back then. And it was used during their cattle drive or their animal drives or whatever, but they used those to set up the tent to stay in while they were on these cattle drives. That's kind of the the the background there. So we see the first drunkenness. Then it says And Shem and Japheth took the took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and went backwards and covered the nakedness of their father, and their faces were backwards or turned away, and they saw not their father's nakedness. So they respected the authority of the parent, right? He turned away. and then it says And Noah awoke from his wine, and he knew what his younger son had done to him or unto him. And we're gonna talk about his curse now. This is what happens to him, and he gets cursed. he cursed B. Canaan. And let me just give you a little build up here. So Japheth had about 14 descendants. he migrates to like the Mediterranean area. And then you have Shem, Shem had five sons, and Ham had five sons. And then here we come with verse 23. Excuse me, 25. And he said, Cursed be Canaan, a servant of servants. And now you're going to be a servant. Shall he be until his brothers, unto his brothers? Or unto his brother. So now he's going to be a servant to his older and middle brother. And he said, Blessed be the Lord God of Shem. So he's blessing Shem. Remember, that's where Christ comes from that lineage, right? And then he says, And Canaan shall be his servant. So that younger brother now is going to be the servant of Shem. And then it then it talks about verse 27: God enlarged Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem. So Japeth was respected. God built him up. What did what what does that mean? Well, Japheth he invented a lot of things. He he he set up the first government, he was into science, he was into art, he was in that Mediterranean, I think of like Greece and that whole area there, Italy and all that. He he he migrates there with his lineage from that side. And And Shem and then Canaan shall be his servant. So So he enlarges Japheth, he shall dwell in the tents of Shem, so he's going to be in favor with his older brother, but Canaan shall be his servant. So now the descendants of Canaan are going to essentially serve the older brother, which is Shem, and then the middle son, which is Japheth. And Noah lived after the flood 350 years. So from the flood. He lived another 350 years. And then verse 29 closes chapter this chapter and says, And all the days of Noah were 950 years and he died. So when you look at Genesis 5, 28 and through 32, that where it started to talk about the history of Noah and his family, it completes the history right now because he passes, he dies, and he moves on. So Lot to take in there. God's blessing Noah. He gives a covenant, right? And then he sets that rainbow for all of eternity. he gives reminders and promises, he gives messages all through this chapter. we learn about Noah's drunkenness. Now people will ask me, I've had it, people many people ask me, well, can I can I drink wine or can I drink alcohol? And my response is always what does the Bible say? Well, the Bible says not to be drunk. What is drunken? Somebody that is out of control. So and y what happens is is when you get to that state you're inhibitions and everything kind of comes down a little bit and you you may say something or do something you regret, or maybe not remember, or whatever it is. But you should never get to that state where you're totally out of control. I think that's the the message. it doesn't say you can't drink, doesn't say you can't have wine, doesn't say that. Matter of fact, it even says a little wine for the belly. Course there's different alcohol levels and you know volumes and all that stuff. I I you know, I don't know about, but you know, maybe he planted this vineyard when he got out and and he made the wine and maybe it was stronger than he he he he thought and he got he got a little tipsy and got drunk and he passed out. But it it still gives us the breakout here of exactly what was going on in chapter nine. folks, Chaplain Dean Alley, I At a moment. I thought I would bring chapter nine to you.
