Dr Dean Alley, PhD: Alright, Chaplain Dean Alley here. I had a moment. I hope you're doing okay. It's Friday. You made it. Yay, you made it. You made it. It's Friday. So I'm off today. Little L U plug, anybody? Really good school. And if you ever take any if you get accepted to their divinity school in their programs, it's just a plug for great school, you don't have to pay for the books. They give you the logos and they give you the all the capabilities to get everything you need through that program, which is a huge savings, folks. I've got six on the wall up here. And every one of I didn't anticipate the books. The books are what killed me. I got a ton of up here, ton of them down here. I got a ton on the floor. I'm gonna put some on eBay. almost giving away, but nevertheless, if it blesses somebody else, then that's fine too. But all the money that comes in from the eBay goes back into the channel, doesn't go into my pocket, it's back into the resources for us to be able to do what we're doing. And that's to share the gospel. In this episode, we're gonna walk through chapter thirty eight of Genesis. As you know, we have been walking through it for gosh, maybe three weeks, maybe? I don't know. 50-something chapters. Sorry, I don't have in front of me. But let's talk about context. Chaplain Dean, why do you always talk about context? Because context is king in any Bible study, exegete or anything where you are trying to discern what the Bible says. Knowing it wasn't written to you, it was written for you. And what about this Old Testament? Well, I can tell you right now, first five books of the Bible. Pentateupe, Torah, whatever you want to call it. is crucial for you to understand the New Testament. you say, Well it's boring. No it's not. Go back and listen to some of my stuff. It's a great historical walkthrough of what the Bible says and how we can use it for our own edification, our devotions, our our communications, our teachings, our Bible studies, all these things personal and professional. It's just so much information, you just can't swallow the ocean. And sometimes we try to do that. so you have to break it off in pieces and that's kind of what we've been doing. I I did two chapters yesterday. One today I try to get these out to you. the goal is not only to edify but to have a better understanding of what God's the goal is. So The Bible. The Bible is what? The Bible is a story about the kingdom of heaven. God. The main character is who? Jesus. Then the prophets and so on and so forth. all pointing, Genesis, all pointing to Revelations, the new heavens and the new earth. I think it's gonna be physical, my opinion. I think it'll be a new physical earth, a new physical heaven. And I think you'll have a physical body. And just my take on studying. I have a lot of people that are negative in their comments, who say that I'm believing in a story that doesn't mat that doesn't exist and that's a fairy tale, folks. I wanna stand next to you when Jesus comes back. I just wanna see your face. And unfortunately, at the judgment, we have to judge. So, not that I want to, but anyways. So, his historical context, the setting is where? He's back in Canaan. He's back in Canaan before the Mosaic Law. So he's there before it's given from Moses. Judah, he left his brothers and he went down to Adulam and the Sheplah, which is about halfway between Lakesh and Jerusalem controlling the route through Akaha and Soka, roughly northwest of Hebron. And he marries what a Canaanite daughter. That is a big deal, folks. Alright, hopefully you can see that. So here is Shechem, is Hebron, Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Jericho, Megito, Samaria. So Samaria's here. And then further down, this is the Sharon Plain and Ja or Hafa. Hafa and So, anyways, I just want to give you a sense of what that looked like and where we were at on that. So as I again tried to put some color into our studies, again he marries this Canaanite woman woman, the daughter of Shua. And that marriage produced E Ur, Onan, and Shehala. Shehel is what they would say. Sheel. Er married Tamar and was slain by the Lord for wickedness. So Onan was the was then bound to the Near East. He was he was told, This is it, Near East, you're bound, that's where you're going. And and the custom of a Levite married. So Onan was bound to this custom wo of a Levite marriage and the brother of a childless dead man was raised up seed for the dead in his brother's name. That custom was written into the la Israel's law in Deuteronomy twenty five and it appears in Ruth four. Onan or Anan, depending on how you want to pronounce that, knew the child would not be counted as his. So he spilt the seed and he was slain by God. So there was a protocol of expectations and he didn't want to I guess, you know, produce a seed, so he, you know, lets it hit the ground and the Lord slays him. So Judah, which withheld Shahlah after his own wife died, he le he went up to Timoth and at sheep sharing time Tamara still denied a husband, sat on the road of Anaman, dressed as a harlot, and the narrative uses both Zona, the common harlot, in verse fifteen, and it Kadesha, which is important here because Paul's gonna talk about in the New Testament, and it's it's not talking about the adultery of the harlotry, harlotry typically Israel and stuff, but When he talks in terms of in the New Testament, because that's what was going on. The pagan worship in in i it it involved prostitution. So each of the temples had prostitutes. And that harlotry was in the temple and that's what Paul's gonna be talking about, more so than the adultery side. But Anyways, br we'll we'll once we get there we'll cover it if I can remember. So the narrative again, Common harlot versus cult prostitute. Anytime you hear cult prostitute, that's temple. Judah left his signet, cord, his staff, and a pledge. And when her pregnancy was exposed, those tokens proved that he was the father, so he had to confess, right? She hath been more righteous than I, is what he'll say in verse 26, and we'll see that. And because he has broken his word about Shahalah. The twins of Pharaz and Zara and Phezarus or Pharzus. So think I want you to think of this. It's like saying Tom, Dick, and Harry. I mean, these are names that would they would resonate in that time frame. He enters the di so Phez would enter the line of David in of the cr of the Christ. And we would see that in Ruth and Matthew. From a doctrinal standpoint, things to keep in mind here that are important is God keeps his promise in spite of the vessel. So I was thinking about that earlier about you know, I'm I'm I'm a vessel and usually utilizing God's using me as his vessel to reach people. And I was having that conversation this morning in Pakistan. All right, so The compromise was Canaan failed to leave re leite duty, condemned Tamar and the tokens of him. We say this about temple priests. They rotated. So a temple priest typically would spend maybe a little over a year as the high priest, and then would rotate. Levitical priests. So it wasn't like the same one sat there for forty years. it it you know, might have been but wasn't on duty all the time. So just so you know. And Yeah, Jacob lay later named his the leader among the brothers and that's in forty nine. The Shep the Scepter promises to run through him to Shiloh and Revelations five, five calls Christ a lion of the tribe of Judah. So there's al always a meaning behind the words, folks. Words matter. You hear that a lot. That's why people spend a lot of time looking at the Greek and Hebrew because it brings in a better clarity of understanding or not. Sometimes you look at the Greek, a lot of times these these words will have two to three to five meanings that can play in play into the verse or the situation. So that's why sometimes it's hard to I think Greek's hard to learn. I mean I think they're all all all difficult, but you have to just practice that all that stuff. But the chapter is not interrupted of the Joseph's story. So this this is just color in this chapter. It shows how the seed survived with Joseph and when he was in Egypt. And Ur and Onan they were judged for their wickedness, not for a technical rule but Oninson was the refusal of the duty to his brother's name. Supposed to take the wife of your brother that's been, you know, slain or no longer with you. So he chose his own interest over his family. That happens today. Especially in marriages. selfishness comes into play and people look at their own interests opposed to what God has for him. So Tamar Zact is was not commended as a model. Judah's own verdict is ne is is narrow. She was more righteous because he had held Sheha. The relative righteousness is not an innoc is is relative a relative's righteousness is not innocence. Does that make sense? So I share that just to say that. But anyways, we are going to get into it. I'm going to read the verses. If you have your Bible, follow along. If not, that's okay too. if you have any questions, write down. You can shoot them to me anytime. we help people all over the world. become un distracted or stuck. Sometimes you get stuck. So, anyways, chapter 38, and we're gonna start in verse one. And the word of God said, not Dinali, and it came to pass at that time Judah went down from his brothers and turned in to a certain Adama Adamite, whose name was Hara. So you're getting a little bit of Israel. Conversation I said earlier, let me just give you some help on that. So Judah saw there a daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua, and he came. came took her, wait in onto her, and she conceived and bare a son and called his name her. So get the picture here, J Judah. he leaves, forsakes his his his home, and his influence and his godly father, Jacob, right? He was the oldest, Judah. No, Reuben's the oldest. I'm sorry. But Judah. Judah flees. So Judah marries the unbeliever. Okay, that's a problem all by itself. So Judah's marrying an unbeliever. and then he and Judah moves to Adolam. And she marries, or Judah marries the daughter of Shua, an unbeliever. So we see this here as I get ready to get into verse four. had Ur the first child. Now in verse four it says, And she conceived again, and she bare a son and called his name Omanon Omnen Onin. Yet she again conceived and bare a son and called his name Shehalah. And he bare he was at Kesabam when she bare him. And Judah took a wife for Ur, his firstborn, whose name whose name was Tamar. And Ur, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord slew him. So And Judah said unto Onan, Go into thy brother's wife and marry him. So so Lord slews the husband, right, which is the son of Judah, and Judah tells his broth his his other son to go in unto thy brother's wife and marry her and raise up thy seed, his you know, the seed of the family, and take care of take over the the brothers. situation. Onan knew that the seed should not be his and he came to pass and he went in unto his brother's wife and he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the Lord, wherefore he slew him also. So he's he's out of custom, he's not doing anything you're like, man, this guy it's God's he's rough. It's not like he just found this out. They they know the they know their culture and and some of those things. But God's making a point here. If it's in the Bible, he wanted you to know it. He has that power to take life. Then said Judah to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, Remain it remain a widow at thy father's house till Shelah, my son, is grown. For he said, Lest peradventure, which means perhaps he die also. And his brother did. And Tamar went and dwelt in the in her father's house. And in the process of time, the daughter of Shula, or Shua. Judah's wife dies. And Judah was comforted, and he went unto his sheep sharers to Timanath, and he and his friend Hirah, they Altomite. And it was told to Tamar, saying, Behold, thy father is father-in-law, goes up to Timoth to share sheep. And she put on her widow's garment, took off her widow's garment, and Covered her with a veil, and wrapped herself and sat in an open place, which is by the way in Timoth. She she saw that Shula was grown, and she was not the given unto him to be wiped. So there were some issues there. Let's just talk about this before we get into 15. So Jud Judah's reared children in a very wicked environment. Judah's children, the son of Air. The second son is Onan, and then we see the third son is Shila. So God's already taken these first two. So Judah gave Tamrah as a wife to Ur. Ur was wicked in God's sight. God put Ur to death. I've said this before. Now I know the wicked and the unbeliever could be a rich millionaire ten times over. They've they've received their reward here on earth. And afterwards, after death they have nothing. you just go read the rich man Lazarus story. but the point being is God has the ability to take take take life when he wants. I don't know I don't know why some of the innocent are subject to that. Maybe there's something he saw, God saw in their future that was not going to be not good so he he he might have taken I don't know. We can ask him when we get there, but you know the the h the whole the whole point of I'm I'm trying to make is if you're wicked, just like Er was, guess what God did? He took him. You ever see why people might die young? or the best of the best, people you know, the good ones, you always always hear the good ones die young. Isn't there a song like that? Anyways, point being is I'm bringing that element in. I'm not saying that is the entire reason why somebody dies at an early age. is because of wickedness. I'm not saying that. I'm saying it doesn't help. That's what I'm saying. It doesn't help. Be ye holy for what? I am holy. All right. So Judah followed the followed the law of the day. And he gave Tamar to his oldest or eldest surviving son Onan to have this to have a son for Ur. Onan knew that the son would not be considered his. It would be his his his dead brother. Onan rebelled and he refused to have a son with Tamar. And Ona Onan was wicked in God's sight. I get this question a lot. Why does God take innocent people and kill Look, you you are getting what I call the sh the you know, the the the the lens into the situation. There's a lot of things that we don't see outside of that because we're finite. God saw it all. He says he's wicked, he's wicked. I mean, it is or it's not. you could say I doubt it. You could say I don't believe it. You could say anything you want. But it'd be untrue. Because if it says it in the Bible that he killed him or he was wicked in God's sight and God puts him to death, so now the first two sons Of Judah's now been killed because they were what? Wicked. Well Judah's turning away from God himself. And and he goes off and he marries an unbeliever. You know, things aren't working out well. You say, Well, I I do all those things. Kind of like the guy that came to Jesus in the New Testament gospels, when Jesus said, Do this, do that. What must I do to be saved or salvation? And he tells this. Yes, a rich man or a well to do wealthy man, all these things, and then he says, I've done these things since since birth. So I've followed all of the commandments and done all these things from birth. And then God says, Take what you have and sell it and give it to the poor, that you may have life in heaven. And he was sad, turned, and walked away because why? His number one idol was money, and that's that's th that's a shame, but that's an idol and that's what gets in in front of people and he's I you know, certainly he's not sitting in heaven today because he didn't follow what God told him to do. And you say, Well he's done a most of the stuff he should get in. I don't know. I I'm not the judge. So now his first two sons are dead. So Judah was spiritually blind. That's what we see here in in in in 11. Because what does he do? He says, Then said Judah to Tamar, his his daughter-in-law, remain as a the widow at thy father's house till Shela, my son, groan. And he said, Lest perhaps he die also, unless he dies. Tamar went up to the house and dwelt in her father's place. So he's at it his house. And he's basically blind because God's still at work. He's unable to see God at work. I mean, is it a coincidence you've lost your first two sons over the fact that it it's over the topic of giving seed to his first son's wife? And the suggestion that Tamar returned home until Shila was enough. was old enough to marry, so she s so he was he was getting close to marriage age. So for the real reason felt Tamar was bad luck. That was a thought. So Judah committed immorality and Judah's wife dies. Gee whiz. A lot of people dying. How about today? Anybody I know that the older I get the more I look at the old bit back home where I grew up at. And hoping I don't know anybody on the O bit page and unfortunately there is. And but that's that curiosity of who we are, right? I make that comment about people dying is because it just seems like there's a lot of it. I see a lot of grief in grief pages on Facebook and other things. People seem to be younger and younger and dying. Do I think some of the stuff had to be with COVID and maybe some of the other stuff? I don't know and I'm not one hundred percent sure. But I would say it probably didn't help. That's what I would say. So Judah took a trip with his friend Hira to sheep share. And it was time it was a time of partying. So sheep sharing. They they ran around and had a good time. So Tamar heard of his plans. Tamar plotted a scheme to pose as a harlot. So let's pick it up in fifteen. When Judah saw, so so she's covered up wrap. Covers it on takes her widow stuff off. That's I guess how they identified she was a widow. So so when Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot because she was covered herself in her face. And he turned unto her by the way and said, Go to I pray thee, let me come in unto thee, for he knew he knew not that she was the his daughter in law. He didn't know. and she said, What wilt thou give me? And thou mayest come unto me. And he said, I will give you thee a kid from my flock. And she said, Will thou give me a pledge till thou send it? And he said, What pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy signet, thy bracelet, and thy staff that's in your hand. and came into her and she conceived by him. And she arose and she went away and laid by her ba laid by her veil from her and put on the garments of a widow. So she has sex with her father in law and 'cause she knew that the brothers weren't gonna by by the culture, she was not gonna have any more children. and there's a lot of deceiving stuff going on here. But what do we see here? Judah's turning he turned to illicit sex, prostitution. You see it all the time. you know, and I can understand as a guy, when you you see an attractive woman, sometimes your mind goes in the wrong place. That's why the Bible says don't stare at Don't stare at the beautiful woman because you may covet that woman. You may want that woman in your mind and it's not healthy. So turn away. He propositioned this woman or Tamar, he didn't know who she was. she was a prostitute. Note how easily he approached her, as though he had plenty of experience. So, you know, he lost his wife. He's using prostitutions for his issues. and again, you it's just a fact that he was probably using this. To take care of his needs. And then Judah was trapped. Tamar was Tamar asked for payment and Judah suggested a goat. But Tamar said, No, I want a pledge. I want your word. And Judah's pledge, his which turned out to be his seal, turns out to be it's his cord and his staff. So the cord, the bracelet, things on that line. And then Tamar returns home immediately. So Judah sent a kid by the hand to of his friend, the Adol Adulamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but found her not. So he tries to bring a goat there, probably wanting to get his stuff back, but that didn't work out. Then he asked the men that were in the place, where is this harlot that was openly by the wayside? And they said, There is no harlot in here. And in in this place, and he returned to Judah and said, I cannot find her. And also the men of the place said that there was no harlot in this place. And Judas said said, Let her take it to her, let her take it to her, lest we be ashamed. Behold, I sent this kid, this goat, and had not found her. So you you you just you're getting the narrative in this and verse twenty four picks it up and he Came to pass about three months that it was told to Judah, saying, Tamar, daughter in law, had played the harlot, and also, behold, she is with child by a a whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth to me, her to be burnt. So he's gonna kill her for for claiming her to be a whore. When she was brought forth, she set up she sent to her father in law, saying, By the man. Who these are, I am with child, and said, discern I, or listen, I pray thee that whose are these signets and bracelets and staffs. So basically, she's gonna plead her case and she's going to tell him exactly what her why she's where she has and what she has. So let's just let's let's look at where she from time she turned home. So Judah was unashamed. Of the sin among his friends. Judah sent a friend to go pay his debt. He felt free to share his sexual adventure with his friend. So he shared it. Most people can't keep to keep a secret, right? You ever heard the old story? kiss and tell or don't kiss and don't tell. he's bragging. He's bragging to his friend. And Judah's friend was unable to find Tamar. So he he goes, he can't find him. Judah had misplaced the values, was concerned with the public exposure, but unconcerned with God's law. So when he misplaced his values of who he was. He was more concerned about that public exposure opposed to God. Sometimes when we sin so much and it it becomes normal. Let me give an example. Stealing is a sin. Taking something that's not yours is a sin. But let's just say we use the term kleptomaniac. They can't help it anymore. They do it so many times and they steal and kleptomaniac they can't help themselves. it becomes a norm and they don't see it as a sin. So when they don't see it as a sin, they so what? Or it's no big deal. Folks, our society does a good job watering down things that we know in our heart that are wrong. And we say to ourselves, Well, that's no big deal. Well, that's no big deal. So what? It is a big deal. It's called Values and Virtues and the Moral Law, the conduct of God's people. And I see it a lot today with you know, think about this. I mean art television commercials are horrible in the movies, they're showing more skin than ever, more scenes. They are desensitizing the American people, in my opinion. It's part of the propaganda thing here or whatever you want to call it, but think about it. You're eight years old and you start watching that stuff and you see it on TV and it's a regular thing. Then you get into pornography and then you treat you start dating people and you treat like, you know, a prostitute, and you're selfish, you're you're sinning in a in a great way, but no big deal. You know, the old running joke is and you can laugh, but it it's it's it's really not too funny is don't turn anything down but your collar. And that's just a a a way of saying go find as many women's as you have and you know go onto them, you know, which is a sin. I mean you should be looking for your wife and wives you should be looking for your husband. Heard me say that a couple videos ago. Women today, you know, when you think about okay I'm going out Friday night with my friends, that's first problem. That's the first problem. And especially if you're married. Well we need a girls' night out. Yeah. Okay. There's more to that story all by itself. So same way with the guys. Going out with the guys. What's the big deal? It is a big deal if you're married. You you are to protect your relationship. Now, Especially if you're introducing any type of mind altering drug, alcohol, drugs, whatever it is, and you let your inhibitions go down, and then you go out of the house and you're w you're wearing something that says, I want your attention because it's so short, you'll get it from guys. If if you go into club, bar, whatever, and you're barely dressed, you will get all the attention you want. Not good attention. But you're you're not you're attracting people with a lustful look of who you are. And that's the same. So cover up. Modest. You don't have to show I mean my wife was telling me the other day that there's baby clothes that show the belly, half halter tops. Now come on. Do you really gotta have a baby with a half hal wa what are you doing? You're introducing something down the road when they get older they're gonna wear it 'cause no big deal. No big deal, Chapman Dean. Who cares? God does. Alright, let's get into it. So Judah's unashamed. he misplaces the values, but he's not concerned with God's law. Judah condemned Hamar and he told him, told him, Bring her to me quickly. Bring her to me. And he's going to give her harsh judgment. He's going to burn her. And but slow to judge himself. So he's he sees the sin of. He's gonna kill her and burn her alive or whatever. But he doesn't see the sin that he's done. And Judah was told Tamar was committing adultery, and she was in the motherly way, she was pregnant. Judah's righteous anger condemned her to death. Tamar identified her lover by presenting the seal in the cord. So we see this. So let's pick it up in 26. And Judah acknowledged them and said, She hath been more righteous than I, because that I gave her not to. Shehalah, my son, and he knew her again no more. And it came to pass in the time of the travail that, behold, twins were born, or were were in her womb, not born yet. And it came to pass when she travailed that one put his hand, his hand, and the midwife took and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. And it came out, came to pass as he drew back the hand, behold, his brother came out, and she said, How hast thou broken forth this breach be upon thee? Therefore his name will be called Fa Ferraz, and afterwards came out his brother, and had a scarlet thread upon his hand, and his name was Zara. So what are we seeing here? We're seeing Judah's repenting here, but only partially when he says he realizes the sin, his sin, and makes that statement about her being more righteous. but he still had refused. He hadn't really repented of his dis his dealings. So when we see God in this conclusion, he's overriding the sin and shame of Judah. And Tamar gave birth to twins who eventually. became two true believers as part of God's true family. That's where the lineage continued. And the birth of Fa Fa Faiz and the birth of Zahirah. So So intermarriage between tribes of Esau and Ishmael. This is coming off of the previous chapter of 37. And it's just a point I'm trying to make. So most modern Middle Eastern tribes are mixed or a mixture, both Esau and Ishmael, Arabs. Ishmael, Esau both were disposed, depossessed at firstborns. So Genesis 27, 40 says, but it shall come about when you become restless that you shall break his yoke. Is he saying here? Break that yoke from your neck. Let's talk about it. Palestine, Palestinians are Esau. Esau breaking the yoke. This is where we see God comes into play, and he says, This is the result of God's division of division, election, and separation. Ishmael and Esau rejected Isaac and Jacob as the chosen person. He was the patriarch. They I mean, look at I mean here here here they are right here. You got this dude here with a ski mask on and this guy over here is blowing I guess fire or something on the Palestinian or the I Israel flag. So they they're not fans of Israel, okay? This has been going on for I would say eons or decades for a while for a while. Ishmael and Esau rejected again the patriarchs. And are we to be neutral or to ignore what is happening? Because all these things Must happen. That's what the Bible says. So God demands that we choose a side. And Jehovah or Jesus makes the division or God makes that division and causes us to choose. Choice one, Jesus Yeshua. Choice two, Israel. We're not to hate the Muslims and the Palestinians or Palestines. However, we must choose a side. So I'm not I'm I'm saying this is you should be choosing Jesus, you should be choosing Israel because they are the chosen people. We shouldn't be hating every single Muslim because not all of are bad. you know, unless you get into the Sharia law and some of that, which is not very good. but most of the Arabs for for most part believe in Muhammad as the only one God. And if you read the Quran and read through it, it will say to cleanse or ethnically cleanse the earth of anybody that is not a Muslim believer of Muhammad. It's not a not a religion, folks. That's a cult. You know the story. He says he saw an angel of light. Kinda like what we learned in with when we start thinking about Mormonism. when the founder there basically says I saw a light, an angel of light. we learned that an angel of light in the Bible is what? Not good. So you Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. That should give you pause if you're in any of those relationships or faith belief systems. Do your own research book. Be a free thinker. you do the research. Don't let somebody tell you about whatever it is and let them give you the skinny on something. Be that free thinker. And know you have to choose a side. And I'm not a big proponent on these divisions of religion. I think religion ruins Christianity or ruins Yeshua Christ and his life here and what he did for us and and following and following in the in the scriptures and doing the things that we should be doing. that is more so my take on things. Now do I have a denomination I was raised in? Absolutely. I was raised in the independent Baptist movement, Jerry Falwell back in the seventies, early seventies and I I know a lot of good good people. and I know a lot of people today. I'm I'm still I'm a member of Independent Baptist Church here locally. and there's a lot of good people in there. but remember we are to search the scriptures for what? The truth. Always looking for the truth. And we are to discern the scriptures. We are to for ourselves make the decisions of what we're reading and you hear me say free thinker. and and kinda go from there. So I think a lot of times we we just follow a leader. You heard me talk about how I I would talk to somebody in another say a religion or something, and they would say, Yeah, I I'm a Catholic 'cause my mother's mother, mother's mother, my my grandmother and everybody. We've been generational when they did it and, you know, folks, that's not That's that that's not a reason to follow any denomination. And do I think that people are that are cat Catholics or Mormons or Jehovah Witnesses or Muslims that believe on Christ and are in heaven or will go to heaven? Yes, I think that's possible. And some of may not want to come out of their religion because they wanna scared of be r reprimended or something by somebody or or whatever. but for the most part, from a macro standpoint, those four religions are not really religions, more so are cults. So anyways, had that conversation with another chaplain yesterday on a nice conference call. So we have to choose and we know that we must choose God's chosen people, right? You say, Well I don't I don't like what Netanyahu ha or or what the prime minister's doing. I don't like how they're they're taking and taking the the the people and what they're doing to Palestine and in hang I agree with you. I'm not I'm not everything Israel. When I say everything Israel, the politics, the military, the positional, the business, the I'm not all on the commerce and how the I'm not all all okay with that. Just like I'm not okay with all of the things here with the president in United States. Because he is the president, he gets to make that decision. I don't have anything to do with it. Now I can pray that God's will be done and hopefully things you know will get better or whatever it is. But I think people get really, really I mean, a guy told me take my hat off the other day 'cause it said you shoe on top. Folks, I'm not taking my hat off because I have a belief system. It's kinda like let me give you an example. everybody knows I'm a Red Sox fan and we got shellacked by the Yankees, by the way. I can play Monday morning analysts here and tell you that both those games you lost, you took out the two best pitchers on the entire team that typically go to a hundred pitches. You took them out at seventy pitches. I mean, what are you doing? You don't do that. And then you bring in a reliever that gives up runs. I gotta tell you, that's a Monday morning endless and I'm just giving you my illustration. But I'm a Red Sox fan, right? So if I wear a Red Sox hat. And it offends a Yankee person. Am I gonna take my hat off? Well, no, I'm not gonna do that. I'm not gonna take off a Red Sox ha a shirt or because that's what I believe in and that's who I support. Well, it's no different than wearing a Israel shirt or a hat or whatever you sure or whatever in support of or whatever. It's no different. You know? It does is everybody a Red Sox fan now on this planet? No, ask a Yankee fan. I I'm trying to give you an analogy of why people just put these divisions between us and they don't have the common sense to realize that people have their own choice and decisions. Just like when you discern or rightly divide the Bible, as it says, you are to discern and rightly divide it for who? Yourself. For yourself, you're to search the scriptures for the truth. It'll set you free, right? So I think it it it really we get to a point where people really get into this twisted spot where they see something I'm offended. We saw that with Black Lives Matter. Folks, look, we are long past the days of slavery that started by the African American or African American or African people. the black brown people in those areas that were selling their own people long before they came to the United States. Do I think there is some suppression or favoritism? Folks, I see it in I see it with white people and all kinds of people. So, you know, trying to say that they matter, did this doesn't make sense to me. They matter more than any other human being. What how would God approach that? God only believes and likes the black and brown communities. He doesn't like the white communities or the Chinese or the the Japanese or the Cuban. He doesn't like any of those. He likes the brown and black. That's not God. He's not a loving God that does that. That's the point I'm making here. Is when I saw that and everybody was running around and they were trying to be politically correct, problem number one. And then when I see companies getting on board, big companies like Coke, and I've seen a former employer of mine go out and spend lots of money on different types of parades and conferences and things with alternate lifestyles and things on that line. And what are you doing? You're catering to that lifestyle. Why? You sell a product, you provide a service. doesn't have to be racially or divided because of the political arena or that time frame. You you don't have to be. I think that's the challenge. And I see that and it and it always bothers me. So yeah. So I know I got off tangent there, but I was trying to give you some analogies about some certain things. So yeah, so Genesis thirty seven, Joseph is infuriates his brothers. We know what happened there. it was the sons of Bilah, Bilah, Bilah, Bilah is Zipplah, Zippah, who tattled on basically to his brothers, you know, stirring the pot, as they would say. Ishar was legal equals legal wives. Mammon Mammonides or we call Rambom, is I don't not we, but is a very f I think a thousand I think first century maybe? No, maybe tenth century. I can't remember. But anyway, one of the one of the educated rabbis at the time says both Rachel and Leah were dead. at that time. And Jacob favored Joseph and Tonet Pazim is royal tunic, which was the coat. And Jacob anointed Joseph as a prince. We learned in Bible school is called the code of many colors. See how colors right there? All right. So Joseph's dream basically and and I'm I'm rehashing for thirty seven, but I wanna get these these slides out because I got some others I wanna do. And twelve sheaves of grain bow down to the twelfth. So that's the dream. Sheaves of grain bows to the twelve. Brothers fully understood this meant submission. I think even his father said, you know, I do submit and bow. And then God communicates to Joseph in these dreams and people believe these dreams and personalities in it Ambitions. Can God come to you in a dream? I believe so. Why do I say that? Because He didn't in the Bible. The entire Bible, in my opinion, is inspired. 66 books of the Bible. Is there a period missing on a comma? Maybe. Point being, I believe it is the Word of God because it is an unfolding revelation, all the way to revelations, of Jesus. And we're to use this to edify and help and build ourselves up and our bl and our our friends and things on that line. So personality, ambitions of a dreamer as a role played as the role. The dream was a hybrid thing, a combination of both the oracles from God and the aspirations of a dreamer. So again, getting another look here. So then another dream relates to the whole dream of the family, which includes Jacob. Remember I told him he So the dream was the sun, moon, and stars, demonstrating that even his father and mother would bow down. That's the point there. And I'm sure his dad didn't take that in. I showed you this early. The flocks that were outside of Shechem, but they were based in Hebron. Shechem was where Dinah was raped, or Dehan Dinah, and her brothers killed the males and Fifty miles between Hebrew and Shechem, you see Dothan, which was the two wells. You can see it down here. Let's see Bothan, Thor, Carmel, Gibeon, Jericho. We know that these lake this is And you can get a little sense there. So I I I bring that up and let's go to the plot to get rid of They basically say, Okay, brother saw him, they commit. The story doesn't change. God's bringing that story of Joseph through these chapters, even though we stopped in thirty eight, and God wanted us to see something with the way Judah was acting and how he was rebelling. So the brothers saw him coming far off and they intended to kill him. And Reuben intervenes, he's the oldest. Ruben knew he had been he'd be blamed 'cause he's the oldest. You know you ever had had that when you've had like we I I grew up there's four of us in the house and you know the the the baby would cry, my baby brother. And he would cry as a baby and the parent would blame you. He's a baby. Let him you know, give give that back to him, even though it wasn't fair. Well whatever. I'm giving you an analogy. So Ruben knew he'd be blamed. the pit was an empty well, so there was nothing coming out of there, I guess, commonly used as prisons when dry. So when a well dries up, they used it as a prison. These were hardened brothers that sat down and ate a meal while they listened to Joseph's pleas. So Joseph gets sold, right? We learn that Joseph was sitting along an ancient trade route, and he was sold for what? 20 shekels, which was the standard price for a male slave in that timeframe. So then we see the deception coming, and then the blood is smeared. This is where the deception, this is where we create a narrative that's false. And they take one of the goats, they they slow him and slew him, and rubs the blood on the coat and smears on the royal tunic, Joseph's royal tunic, and presents it to Jacob. Jacob could not be comforted, folks. Jacob says he shall die now and he'll go down to hell, Sheol. And Sheol means the grave or place of dead. So Joseph sold to who Ishmaelites? Right? He sold to the Ishmaelites. Then the Bible says Midianites. A Midianite was an Ishmaelite, Ishmael from Hagar, Midian from Khetar, which was what Ketarah, which was a one of the concubines. Joseph taken to Egypt. He sold to Potiphar and Petaparah. means gift to Ra. so pedophore the name means the god the idol or the god of Ra in Egypt. Again, words have meanings. So we pick up 38. Judah is from the line that would come from Yeshua and from Jesus. So Judah would inherit the authority of the tribe of Israel. Judah was the fourthborn it was Judah who wanted Joseph sold. Joseph was r a rival to Judah and Reuben forfeited his status by sleeping with Billah, which was his father's concubine and s or you know, concubine. Simon and Levi forfeited their status because they why? Because they were killing those males in Shechem. Remember when they raped Dinah, the sister? They forfeited their opportunities right there. That's why Levi or Levi the Levites, they Never had land. Judah and Joseph would become long-term rivals. Judah, Judah and Joseph became rulers of two different Israelite kingdoms. Ephraim was Egypt's Egypt's son of Joseph replaces Joseph for a time. Ezekiel 37 says, Ephraim and Judah will come back together in the end times. Ephraim Equals 10 and lost tribes. So Ephraim, remember the children of Joseph are named in tribes. Ephraim is one of the tribes. and then we'll see the other one here in a minute. But these tribes still exist and they have been given permission to immigrate to where? Israel. So they become adopted by Jacob and they become a tribe of Israel. Ephraim tribes convert to modern Jew Jews want Ephraim to and tribes to convert to a modern Judaism. It's okay for now, but there's be some problems on this demand in the future. Alright, so I want to bring up this one. Open this up a little bit and walk through 38 for you so you get a better sense. Alright, so we see the genealogy here. and it just lists them out and they're biblical. It's a story bloodline. Adulum, Jezbib, Timnah, Timnah, Enam will will all be within the territories of Judah. The time frame after Joseph is sold, but before Jacob's whole clan moves to A Egypt because of the famine. So the daughter of Shumah marries the Canaanite, Judah, marries a Canaanite woman, and Judah made a decision to part ways with who? His brothers. So doing that. He knew what he was doing. He was giving up that lineage through the Isra Israelites. he has three sons, he produces, and none are suitable to carry the covenant promise. None of them. They were wicked. Judah did what Esau had done. He separated his faith from everyday matters of life. He just didn't incorporate what he was taught into everyday life. I think of us. When w are we incorporating things that we should be doing that the Bible tells us to do in our everyday life? Do we are we ashamed because we follow Jesus? Are we ashamed to tell people about God? Remember what the Bible says? Jesus said, If you deny me, I'll deny you in front of the Father. So Judah's firstborn, Mary's Tamar. Again, we're rehashing, but I'm gonna walk through it. God kills her before the son is produced. Onin is the second son of Judah had to marry Tamar and the Leverite Lev Leverite marriage, which was required, Liver Latin, l Labar or Levi means Latin, or Hebrew means Yibum. Livia Liverite required not a unique not unique to Israel. So they knew these are some of the things that were going on in that culture. Twenty five of Du Deuteronomy will talk more about that. We hopefully will get there. So Onin refuses to impregnate Tamar, so God kills him too. the son produced would not have been his. That's the reason why he was killed. He d he goes, I'm not that if I have a son, I can't claim him. He's not mine. So the son would have been entitled to part of Judah's estate. Tamar would have no son to care for her in the old age. The third son, which is Shula, essentially. should have married Tamar, but Judah refused and sent Tamar to live with her father. Tamar develops this plan and Judah goes to Timah Timnah for the sheep sharing, which is kind of partying and doing this and having fun and letting her hair down or whatever, the guys got together type thing. See the example of her sitting side of the road. Tamar decides she would sleep with Judah and gets pregnant by him. She disguises herself as a prostitute. Look. Going a little late, not good. And gets attention from who? Guy walking by, he sees this and this. People today are doing this and wondering why they're getting this kind of attention. she disguises herself as that prostitute, and then it's I ninum or inam me equals eyes that look. So the temple prostitutes, which are different and I I say this the common practice among the worshippers of Baal, most mystery Babylon religions incorporate a sacred sect. So there was that one place where Paul goes, I think it's Ephesus, has a thousand temple prostitutes. And you know, they're incorporated into their religion of sexual being and things in in life and used their religion and sex to be part of whatever it is. So three months later, Judah finds out that Tamar is pregnant and orders her to be burned and killed for the crime of fornication. But when Judah discovers he is the father, he asks Tamar for forgiveness. She is more righteous than I. And then, you know, he was wrong. I was wrong is what he says. All right, so now we look at some of the genealogy here. I want you to see Perez. See where Tamar, who's a Canaanite, and has the son Perez and Zerah. Here's the lineance, and you see all the way down to the son of David, the pattern. The pattern of ten. So it has ten. And then the sun, the seventh sun in Chronicles, you can see this. You could always stop and freeze this and look these up. but you can see where Tamar produces the sons, the rabbis tell Tamar not was not a Canaanite. That's what the rabbis in Jerusalem will say, No, he she wasn't a Canaanite, she was a Seminite. I again, those are just rabbis. I call it old men talking. And Judah intended to have a son of promise from the Canaanite woman, his wife, but it wound up to be the that the promise line stayed a Seminite. Israelite, Canaanite, Azarite. Again, that is how the lineage goes in that time frame. So Judah intended to have the son son of promise. Per Perez divided a way to continue the line of promise. So he was divided from that lineage. As we walk through this real fast, I'm gonna give you the highlights here. 38's all about Judah. He leaves home and then got over and all the way through, and then we learn he he basically is a wayward child, a young man on on on whatever it was, his quest and he's sinning. and we see this chapter, the first purpose is how the tribe of Judah had its beginning. We see how the tribe of Judah begins with this this chapter. And we know that God gives mercy to Judah 'cause Judah is still part of the tribe that brings the lineage. And I think the other other part that we start looking at Kind of the twofold situation here is how can God choose a man that is such a great sinner? And again, the second purpose is the chapter illustrates why God had to move Israel out of Canaan down to Egypt because of this sin. Very wicked. So the family's forsaken. He marries this Canaanite. the thought here is the commandment concerning marriage for believers is clear. We must we must keep the marriage and union pure. When we marry unbelievers Just like Judah made those mistakes. We set ourselves up for some potential failure unless that person comes to God. So you should know that that they should be believers and keep the marriage and the union basically untouched. So we see that Judah's wife, they have three sons, you hear the story about how they died. a thought here about the the strong lessage lesson here is The ungodly unbelievers home will influence children to be ungodly and unbelieving. So if you don't believe in God, you don't think it's a fairy tale, you have children, guess what? You are inadvertently by even if you never tell about God, you're inadvertently not doing what we should be doing. Telling our children when they wake up, when they lay down. believers are Believing in having a godly home influences children to have a godly life. I thank the Lord above. My mom took me to church, was a was my first Bible school teacher. So I had that little bit of foundation there. so we also saw some spiritual blind in verse 11, spiritual blindness, and how many of us become spiritually blind? Think about it. that we're blind of the things of God. When we don't read our Bible, we just stay blinded. blind is what really what God God and the righteous behavior. Blind is what ungodly and wicked behavior is. So when we ignore God and we know what's true and we sin, as Paul says, God forbid we do this. and you're a believer like, I'll just pray God to forgive me and then you know. Be careful. That's a dangerous place to be. All right, so we see the the spiritual blindness, we see the immorality here. The world we live in is immoral, folks. and it has immoral practices on T V in front of us. You can go get this entertainment. gets getting worse and worse and worse. If you think it the world is getting better, send me an email. All right, so it's a normal okay, I will appeal to the normal person exposes the sexual appeal. We cannot live out a world without being influenced by the world. Be ye not in the world but out of the world. Or be ye in the world but not of the world. That's the word I was looking for. Be ye not of the world, but be in the world. So be in the world but not of it, that's what it's saying. you know, there's you know there's there's commandments in here that we know that we should guard television, radio, music, movies. There's so many things that we need to guard, our family and our family children and grandchildren. Folks, if you slapping a tablet in front of giving access to whatever they want, you are heading down a road that you will not You ever seen where you have these memes on social media where father comes in, tells his son to do something, he's playing a game and he's not going to. And the father rips the game, takes it outside, he smashes it, makes son completely goes off, completely has an emotional breakdown. That's by design, folks. You know, these computers that we have, the background you can't see is blue screen. If you've ever done a study on blue screen, blue screen was first introduced in Vegas. Why? Because it attracted you to continue to stay there. And it started with the one-on-one bandits, started adding that background blue screen, and it was an addictive to stay watching whatever it was. Or in this case, gambling. Keep on gambling. So when you hand a tablet or a phone to somebody or one of your children, grandchildren, be careful. Be overt. Be in their life. Know what they're watching. Set time limits. I don't think they should have a phone until they're much older. you say with Chaplin Dean, that's kind of a old school, isn't it? So keep as innocent as you possibly can as long as you can. I know it's convenient to throw it in front of them because I just want to be quiet. I just want to be quiet. That has ramifications for quietness. So anyway, just think about that for this world. Judah, he's unashamed. There's people in this world every single day are unashamed of the way they live, talk, speak, watch, whatever. It's insensitive to They don't doesn't up doesn't upset you. Like If I watch television, I see a commercial and I see alternate lifestyles engaging in definite relationships relational physically my guard goes up why because I know the Bible tells us it's not of God so but people are getting the more they put it on TV the more it gets accepted. I'm okay with that. I've heard that before. Try to try to educate somebody or a child and say, you know, grown child and make a comment. I'm okay with that. That is not a good place. You should have those guards though. So all sin will be exposed and it will be made known of. So all you people out there that are committing sins in cover in the darkness or whatever, and we all have every one of us have it, though every sin will be exposed and we should be asking forgiveness of those sins and not doing it. And then asking God to help us through those things. also j Judging others in self righteousness, we learned. What did we learn? We learned that Judah immediately was gonna burn her. She he judges her, but guess what? He was the guilty party. Catch that? There's a learning right there. He was quick to condemn her and willing to kill her, burn her alive for what she did in the motherly way. It's his child, he did it. And he makes that statement, partially asking forgiveness. I don't think he fully Ask. So the lesson's pretty clear. How many of us condemn sin in others while sinning? I think of people in the pastoral pastoral that get in front of people in a in a pulpit every week and tell people what the Bible says and preach at them and convict them or allow the holy holy scripture to convict them all the while they're doing it themselves. Double portion could be a double penalty or a double punishment. So as God says the the feet of the righteous are are a good thing, and he talks about that the person that is proclaiming God doing the things of God is a double honor, double portion of blessings from God, also is a double edged sword. It'll come home to you. Maybe not today. But it's clear. So how quickly we judge and forget how short we are from the glory of God ourselves. I know I have to work on that. I have work to do. We should repent, I think of the indecisions. No longer could he be angry at her, right? He was the guilty party. How many people are like Judah was in this world? He was not repenting of the sinful life. You never see where he repents fully. He was not turning away from his sin, his worldly life, or not turning to God. He was not ready to give that over to God. They hold on to it. We do that sometimes. We hold on to a sin. 'Cause we like it. It tickles our ears or our or our thinking or our eyes or whatever. it's a work in progress every single day to Try to be holy. You will have days you will fail. Some days you'll fail miserably. But I I think if you get up, as God says that He he lifts us up and brings us up when we fall. He brings us up. And he doesn't for the sinful. When they fall, they fall. So he forgives us and he gives us that mercy. But we should be working hard to not repeat those things. And I'm right there with you in the boat. I got a paddle. So we learn about the sovereignty of God because he continues to bring the life of or the lineage of Jesus through this piece. and God demands repentance. When we repent, I mean truly repent. People get on there and just say a prayer to say a prayer, and there's no heart prayer behind that. He knows. He knows the heart. Just like he gives us that r he gives us that example when he says the Pharisees' hearts were far from him. Remember? God will feel forgive our sins and begin to bless us and use us in a marvelous way if you are repenting. If you think your bride is one he really hates, but if you think you're above Jesus or above the law or above the things that Jesus essentially stands for and you think that you're gonna be you're in a better place than most people that's pride and people think they're people go to church and they go home and think that they they're they're they're righteous. They're righteous in God and their hearts are far from God. You've heard me say that before. How many people are in church that go because either their wife or husband wants them to go or their children want them to go? But their hearts are far, far from God. They walk out and they continue to sin. may God help May God help me in my sin. Alrighty, folks. Chaplain Dean Alley. I wanted to say one more note here for you. just from an application standpoint. So we see that It's the family duty and it's not optional. When God attaches a promise to Israel, like Onan had to keep the appearance of obedience with he and was withheld the substance. Judah is delayed justice to Tamar at the a at then and sat as her judge. So he was judging her. The the token force of truth, confession, not self defense, but is a turning point. folks for us. She hath been more righteous than I. He admits that, but he doesn't repent. God does not need an unblum blemished human line to keep bringing his word. He judges the real wickedness, exposes the hidden pledges that we make in life, and still brings Fahar as into the line of David and Christ comes to that line. It's the practical call to integrity in duty and you have to already have given your word to keep it so your word means something and honesty with evidence shows that you were wrong so I see it's like doing the right thing when nobody's looking you ever heard that saying anyways chaplain dean alley take care have a great weekend God bless I love you all bye
