Dr Dean Alley: Alright, Chaplain Dean Alley here. I had a moment. Sorry for the delay. I hope you're doing well. It's Thursday. And it looks great out there. It's gonna be about eighty-six, seventy-two now, so clear blue and eighty-two. Can't complain. Thank thank the Lord for his creation. And we finished chapter thirty-five and I wanted to get into chapter thirty-six and then thirty-seven kind of together, and kind of show you a little bit about The situation with Jacob's brother Esau and his own land. You know, we know that they had separated and all the father has died. So what do we learn? Let me share my screen. Hopefully I don't have any glitches like I did the other day. All right. So we are at the end of the patriarchs. Who's the patriarch? Well, we know Abraham was first, we know that Isaac was second, and we know Jacob was third. So Jacob is now they're all pretty much Gone. They're in the ground, as everybody is. It's appointed once to die. So Esau is the founder of the Edomites, which is in Seir and Edom. And it's interchangeable terms. So when you say Seir, Mount, it's also the Mount Seir is where we get that we learned that earlier in Genesis, and it says, and Esau said to his father Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me, even also me also, O my father. And Esau lifted his voice, and what did he do? He wept. And then we see in 39, he says, Then Isaac, his father, answered and said unto him, Behold, away from your fertility of this earth or of the earth shall be your dwelling, and away from the dew of heaven from above. And Verse 40 says, And by the sword you shall live, and your brother shall serve, or you shall serve, and shall come out above about when you become restless, that the that you shall break his yoke from your neck. So just showing you some topology here. I think I said it right. I could have said it wrong. if I did, please tell me and teach me. Alright, so Y you know, so everything over here you could see hopefully you could see my arrows here. This is the promised land. This is Edom. and Moab and Edom and those are typically then you had Sodom and Gomorrah on this side. Everything to east of the Dead Sea or east of Sea of Galilee kinda has a a split right up the middle of it right here. You can see it. everything to the east of it typically were were were Edomites or they were Sears or they were Typically not in favor, well Israel. They were not fans, let's put it that way. even though they're brothers and then, you know, there's people that'll say, You know, you know, we talk about the the Arab nations and we talk about Ishmael and we talk about Esau and those those type of people that made up the the Arab nations, which is is is largely true, but keep in mind there was also Edomites and and different intermixed into the The promised land. So it wasn't like they weren't intertwined. So they were. They're intertwined throughout the entire parts of you know, even today. So if we look at the divisions right now and we look at today and we see the you know, you have you have people talking about Israel and Jr Jerusalem, and you have people talking about Palestine and free Palestine and all those things, you know, I I could tell you that any death is wrong and God is the judge. I'm not. so what I would say to that is when I say I support Israel, I don't support Netanyahu or whatever his name is, his defense, his his political plans, his military actions, and the things that he does outside. I don't I'm talking about from a biblical standpoint supporting the Israelites as a whole. Now, Israelites, let me say this. So Jerusalem, which would be down in this area here. Judah, Jews Jerusalem, Jews. But Israel is a large portion of this area. So you had different tribes and camps that are in Israel. And it's not just blessing Judah, it's all of Israel. And you know, you see the Philistines here and stuff. So I say that just to let you know that and then this was during King David's reign, by the way. And I think people get a little they get a little miss on it and they just seem like, my goodness. you know, I cannot believe that you are You support Well, no, I support because the Bible says bless Israel. It doesn't mean bless their their their military, their political stance. It doesn't say any of that. I say God bless America. Does that isn't that's a that's a that's a macro level response. Do I like, you know, I mean am I a fan of everything that our president of the United States does? Probably not, but that's okay. I wasn't a fan of other presidents, but it doesn't mean that I'm mean spirited about it or I can't get my way about it or whatever, I mean it's we support And being a military guy, you support your your president. He is the co commander in chief. So you learn that if you're in the military and folks that want to buck that or go against it probably didn't serve in the military and understand the the cadre of following your leader. but anyways I just wanted to kind of bring you this map and let you see a little bit of what we're at and when we think about Esau and Edom and the symbol of the unrighteous and the evil. I don't know, you don't have to go far. I think the news had an individual, I think he was from an Arab nation or whatever or descent or whatever, but he was flying a plane and the other guy was from India and he tried to crash the plane coming out of Tel Aviv, I guess, is the story. I d I don't know the whole story. I just know that the co pilot or the pilot, whoever was flying the plane, had to subdue the person that was trying to crash the plane and then other people had to come from the back of the plane to help out and to protect the the lives and they landed safely. It was a and and what I love about the story is it was a plumber who landed the plane. So anyways. When we talk about Deuteronomy twenty three, we'll hopefully get there one day, but because the Edomites are considered kinsmen of Israel, you still bless right? What did God tell Ishma Ishmael or tell his wife? He's gonna make him a great nation as well. So understand that you're still bl you're blessing all of Israel, which means you're gonna have to bless the Edomites as well. Now we We learn, you know, the Bible is especially in these first five books of the Bible, is historical. And it's important to set that foundation. And I say that because you can't take everything and spiritualize it. You gotta look at it from an analytical standpoint and from a a literal standpoint in some cases where you can't where you can't take it anymore, but you can't spiralize spiritualize. you know, everything in the old testament 'cause it is a historical in context book of the book. And we have to look at that and that's why you hear me talk about the context in and out and all that and how important it is to put that information together so we can be better informed. Now we will not know everything. we are finite and we don't understand certain things. we learned that the Bible talks about all the family relations from the tribal's point of view. So that's all nations. All Israel is even Edomites and even the Ishmael and all the all the all the folks that represent that that terrible side. Not all of them. It wasn't like the entire those tribes and clans were a hundred percent evil. they were they were mixed, I think, in there. But mainly they were run by people that were a little bit more evil in in view, but you have to look at it from a tribal standpoint too. So it's difficult for our minds to understand the tribal sacrifice societies. We we don't see we don't understand it. If you've never lived there or been there or or or seen any exposure there, you learn a lot. You learn there's warlords and tribal leaders. among the Arabs you have you remember Saddam Hussein was there. He was seen as a bad boy, guilty of misbehaving. Now I we could say weapons of mass destruction, we just went in there to s whatever. I'm not here politically. And I don't agree with everything that I've been told by the governments. I I take everything with a w as the old saying, grain of salt, or meh, all right, you know, maybe, and I leave it at that. But they they blame them guilty mis misbehavior, guilty killing and constant fight and dominance is normal for tribal societies. They are to take over each other and conquer each other. So in the Bible we see Esau. is a bad boy and Ishmael is not the chosen one. Okay. So there was probably some angst there, but anyways, it's important to point that out. But they are still thought of as the kinsmen of Israel in a larger sense. That's what I'm saying. So when you s people say, Well, you know, free free Palestine, they're all part of Israel. You're blessing everybody. That's all the different tribes, including the Palestine. Palestine, you're you're blessing them as well. And I think sometimes people try to narrow that down and try to make that a you know a situation where you know it's a horrific and all these other things and I'm not saying it's not. I'm just saying that don't get caught up in the political sense and certainly don't get caught up in the the television reporting because they don't report anymore. They give you their opinion if you ever sat and listened to to give you their opinion on the situation, instead of reporting. Like when I was growing up and you would get the news, Cronkite or whoever was given to you, people say he was CIL. It doesn't matter. I mean the yeah, you're gonna get somewhat of a narrative that's gonna be pushed out by the White House of the administration at the time. You can see it, there's no secret there. People think they're independent reporters and all that. I don't think they are. I think they were purchased and bought and They would do just about anything for their salaries. And they've swung really to the liberal liberal side instead of up the middle. And I try to sit up the middle. I'm not a Democrat, I'm not a Republican. I sit up the middle and I make my decisions by voting from the morals up. And there's a lot of things about this president from a moral standpoint in his past that I don't agree with. But Side by side with candidate to candidate, who do I think is better? So that's kind of how I reconciled, if you will. Maybe some circular reasoning there. But, anyways, let's get into 36, then try to jump into 37 and bring it down. So it may be a bit long, so I'll I'll try to speed up. So now these things are the generations of Esau, who is Edom. Esau took his wives. And daughters of Canaan, which you already know that's not what God wanted. He didn't want her interracial relationship, but he did that out of spite. And Ada, his daughter of Elon and the Hittite, and Ahalaba Ma, I don't know if I said it right, the daughter of Annea, the daughter of Zibion and the Hittite, and Bash Bashmit and Ishmael's daughter, sister, Nib Neba Joth and Adar bear Etha Elela Alelephaz and Beth Bashmath and Bear rule. And we're obviously going through the genealogy here. Why do we do gene our genealogy? It gives credibility to to what we're reading. And you know, it wasn't like they could go down to their local courthouse and and pull up information. So all right. So and Oval Obala Allah Bah and Jeshu and Jalam and Korah and the sons of Esau were born of him in the land of Canaan. I will say this they're no longer around. Evil doesn't last, but their their tribes are no longer around. in my in my estimation estimate. They're not they're not still around. I think they're they're just like Canaanites and all the others, I think they're gone. And Land of Canaan. And Esau took the wives and sons and daughters, and the persons of the houses, cattle and all the beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan, and he went into the country from face of his brother Jacob, for their riches were more than that that they might dwell That they may dwell together and the land wherein they were strangers, they could bear them because of their cattle. Remember, cattle's not definitely not beef, it's more of goat and sheep and type thing. And thus dwelt Esau in the Mount of Seir and Esau in Edom. And these are the generations of Esau, the father of the Edomites of Mount Seir. These are the names of Esau's son, Eliphaz, the son of Ada, the wife of Esau, Reu, the son of bashmoth and it the wife of Esau and the sons of Eliphaz and or were Timon Omar Zepho and Gadamin Gadam and Kenes and Timenah and let's see was a concubine in Eliphaz Eliphaz Esau's son, and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek. And these were the sons of Adah, the Esau's wife, and these are the sons of Ruel. Naelf, Zayar, Shama, Shemaha, Mitta, and the sons of Bashemath, Esau's wife. And these are the sons of Al Alahbath, the daughter of Anah. the daughter of Zibla, Esau. And this is a good opportunity, just so you know, as we're going through this genealogy here, always to do you know you go and do some research to do some character studies and look these people up and get a deeper knowledge if you if you if you do if you choose to do so. So and these were the sons of Eholaba, the daughter of Ana, the daughter of Zibion, Esau's wife, and she bare Esau, Jewash, Jelam, Khorath. These were the dukes of the sons of Esau, and the sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, the Duke Temon, Duke Omen, Duke Zephi, and Zukanaz, Duke Korah, Duke Cadam, and Duke Amalak. These are The dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. These were the sons of Ada. These are the sons of Reol, Esau's son, Duke, and Naath, Duke Zerah, Zuk, Duke Shama, Duke Mitzah, and these are the Dukes that came of Rual in the land of Edom, and these are the sons of Bashimah, Mea, Esau's wife. And these are the sons of Abalas Ab Aholama, Esau's wife, the Duke of Jes Jeshu, or Jesh Duke of Jalaman, Duke of Korah, and these were the the Dukes of Edom and these are the Dukes. And these are the sons of Zir, the the Horite who inhabited the land of Lotha and Shabal and Zema, Enea, and Dishon, Azar, and Dishnah, and these are the Dukes of the Horites, the children of Sire, the land of Edom, and the children of Lotan were Horai, Hemen, and Lotum. Sister of Tinema, and the children of Shubal were these Manahath, Abelon and Shebel, and Onam. And these are the children of Zebion. Ajar, Ana, that was that of Ana was was found with the mules in the wilderness as he fed the asses of Zebion, his father. And The children of Ana were these Dishon, Illabah, the the daughter of Anah, and these are the children of Dishon and Hamanam, Ish Ishmaam, Itharam, and Sharon, and the children of Besar are these Bil Bila, Bilam and Zahavan and Achan. And these are the children of Dishon and are us and Aaron. And these are the Dukes that came from Horite to do the Lotan and the Duke of Sheol and Duke. We'll pick up thirty-nine in a minute. So Esau's wives, what are we learning here? so, anyways, let me just look at this real quick. in the Bible, Esau's a bad guy. Yeah, Ishmael's not chosen, but they're still part of the larger thing so Esau's sons are born in the promised land jacob's sons are born in Mesopotamia Esau is removed removed his family from the land of blessing and Jacob brought his family into the land of blessing so it was kind of a switch out and people of Israel born into blessing rejected it and the Gentiles born outside of blessing accepted it through Yeshua This is the God pardon pattern that began when we saw in Genesis one. This is kind of an eye can eye chart here, but it kind of lists what we talked about the first three chapters and it lays out know the the the the information I just read you can go back to these verses and pick that up. and again the descendants so we see Esau's wife. He had one he had what? One, two, three, four, five, six, these descendants. We see you can see all the names that I just I just named through through this whole piece. So the family tree can consist of different can be different. depending on the purpose. With Esau, the two different listings had to do with the wives that he had at the certain time. Or it was due to the changes caused by into or intermarriage of the tribal clans. Let's see if I can blow this up for you a little bit. Alright, so this is just got another eye chart. So this is according to Matthew and this is according to Luke. Why is it important? Because you've got to see you've got the king of the Jews and the branch of Jesse. So this kind of starts Joseph and Mary, Jacob, and it goes through this whole echelon on the left side. And then you've got Levi, all these that are the branch of Jesse. and it talks about Rome assumed the control over Palestine in sixty three BC. so the Maccabe Maccabeen Maccabe revolt is in one sixty-seven BC. There were several of those. Maccabee one, two, and three I think it was. And they fought against Rome and cities and it was interfighting and you know, that's they they they they didn't win, but they they certainly tried to fight. So yeah, so as we look at this and and we we're breaking this out. The intermarriage between the tribes of Esau and Ishmael. So intermarriage was so significant by Jesus' day it became hard to distinguish between people who came from Esau from those who came from Ishmael. So it's difficult to determine who. A true Arab is a descendant of Ishmael. So there you go, right there. The most modern Middle East tribes are mixtures. So there is a mix. So you know, we talked about So here's Amalek, and the early enemy of of Israel. So Amalek, we know, was fighting against Israel, and we see the breakout here. Amalek. Descendants of Esau and you see it right here. and out of those came Imalek and they were fighting Israel. It seems like they always were fighting. And Genes and then we'll get to Genesis let me stop this share. we'll get to Genesis thirty-seven later. But let's just h highlight a couple things and then we'll jump into it. So Esau's wife and children in Canaan, they marry the unbelieving Canaanites, having his flesh satisfied, being unequally yoked with unbelievers. Bible tells us in contrary that we should be equally yoked with believers. if you're married to an unbeliever now. that doesn't mean you go get a divorce. but at the same time we are we are commanded to find somebody that is of belief in a higher power. It's not the it's not the athic atheistics. I mean the bait you know, the you there's nothing you're gonna say to satisfy so it's it's almost a moot point. But anyway, so his wives of Canaan, they were all unbelievers, right? Then we know that his children born in Canaan, they reared in a mixed atmosphere of belief and unbelief. So there was kind of you know both sides of this. And Esau moved to Canaan, Mount Sierra Edom, received the second best because of the choose chosen world. he took all the people and the property. The land was unable to support both Jacob and Esau, and the land that Jacob, Jacob. By inheritance. So he got the promised land. He got the blessing, remember? And Jacob gave him and settled in Mount Seir. Esau's son and grandsons, having only a name recorded and not in history. Esau's sons, grandsons, all through Rurial and some of the others of like Allohim. so Esau's son and grandsons who became chiefs. you saw where they use the word duke. Duke was being used, gaining some type of earthly prominence, but being buried forever. so we we see again the chiefs or the you know, as the Bible calls them dukes. And Esau's neighbors, the Horites, and the original inheritance, inhabitants, I'm sorry, of the land of Seir being classified with a worldly instead of a believing number of word of God's people. So Yeah, so that's the the deal there. So let's finish it up here and pick it up in thirty. So the Duke, Dishon, Duke Ezir, the Duke Dishon and the Duke of Horamung, their dukes in the land of Sire, and these are the kings that reigned in the area in the land of Edom before they reigned any king over the children of Israel. And Husan died, and Haden, the son of Bedad, who smote the Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead, and was named of the city was Iphith. And Hadad died, and Shemih of Masarek reigned in his stead, and Shmalah, Shemalah. Ma died and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead. And Saul died and Balahan, the son of Akabar, reigned in his stead. And Balahanna, the son of Ak Akbor, died in Hadar re reigned in his stead. And their these names are of the Dukes that are of Esau. So according to their families, and after these places, their names Duke Emanah, Duke Elabah, Duke. Jepha, Duke Alahama, Duke Elah, Duke Penon, Duke Kenzar, Duke Teman, Duke Mezzar, Duke Maganil, Duke Iram, these are the Dukes of Edom, and according to their habitants in the land of their possessions is Esau, their father of the Edomites. Alright. So Esau's we see Esau's children here, they become kings in the land, right? And securing the power and property and honoring quickly, but lacking in the great things that God could give So they were unbelievers all the way around. So they were lacking in the belief system. So Esau, Edom's territorial rulers and the geographical land and homes. But having no hope in Canaan in the promise. So there's just nothing there for the blessings. So again, we see the genealogy and the portrait of a evil and good in terms of the relationships with Esau and Jacob. We see the marriage, it completely breaks out all of what Esau's wives that he took. And he went against. His mother, remember it she was she was upset about it. And I'm sure they weren't happy about the fact that they were intermixing, but you know the God's word is clear. We are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. You heard me say that earlier. Marriage is to be b of in the Lord, founded by the Lord. It's one of the first institutions in the Bible, and live by the Lord and finish with the Lord. And the union of marriage is not just a physical and sexual, it is spiritual, folks. So therefore, marriage is based on and built upon the spiritual, not upon the lust and passions of the flesh. So contrary to your carnal body wanting to gravitate towards that desire. We see Esau's worldliness. Esau basically receives that second best. Remember? He didn't get the blessing. He got the second best. he ignored, neglected, and denied the spiritual, giving himself over to the world and the lust of the flesh. And consequently, God did not give him any blessings. He could not receive inheritance. of the promised land or be a symbol of the promised land being the way he was in his belief system. So the other thing is Esau's heritage. We saw that we talked about how the grandson Sir, which means Edom, have been named and recorded in the history. And we saw Esau honor an earthly it's all about the earthly, worldly people. I I was listening Yesterday I was reading the Bible somewhere, I forget where it was. Don't know, don't beat me up too bad. But and it was talking about the rich and the people that have money that are unbelievers, they have got their reward according to the Bible. So there's nothing more for them. As were we the poor at heart and and the spirit and everything. we have that eternal blessing that will continue. And I believe it's gonna be a physical new earth and a physical heaven. I know everybody's gonna say, well how do you know? Well that's what the Bible says. New earth, new heaven. All right, so both men were men and nations are fools in their they do not build any spiritual heritage at all. You know, they live for today. Live your best life. Esau, Horitz, they were all worldly a worldly view. What are the terrible things to be numbered with people of this world with who are known by God? So we know unbelievers, ungodly, atheists, agnostic, we know indulgence. So if you indulge in greedy hoarders or selfish, those are bad things. Immoral pleasure seekers, idolaters and false religions. And then we talked about Esau's king. These kings as we were finishing up thirty one through thirty-nine. And lastly, Esau, these chiefs possessed the vast buried territories of the earthly land, but had no hope in Canaan. They'd never get to promised land. And how tragic. You have if you're grafted in as a Gentile with the Jews, you have the opportunity to reach the promised land. What's the promised land? the the the new kingdom, the new heavens, right? And to leave a legacy of possessed earthly land, but to die without ever possessing the right to the promised land of God in heaven itself. And I think that is people that live today that are hopeless. if you have no hope, you don't believe anything, you're but the Sadducee. Live for now and we're just gonna die and fall in the dirt and that's the end of it. Nobody's gonna know us and that's the way it is. I will say this. A hundred years, who cares, right? But point being is we should be living loving God with all our heart, mind, soul, and body, and our neighbors as ourselves, and then doing the commandments that were commanded in the Bible. You can find those anywhere, and telling people about Jesus and helping people see seek salvation should they want it. Now you've heard me say it before, there's people that don't want to go to hell. I I'm just gonna tell you right now. And I think that is just a macho type thing and trying to be I'm all Billy Bad Boy, so look at me. it's not a good place to be. It's that i I call it the skinny branch. You're standing on the skinny branch. So let's get into chapter thirty seven. That was six. And this one is the history of Jacob and we learn that it resumes. So let's bring it up in one. And Jacob dealt in the land wherein his father was a stranger in the land of Canaan. Those are the generations of Jacob. Jacob being a servant, seventeen seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren, and the lad was the sons of Billah, and with the sons of Zippa, his father's wife Joseph, bought brought unto his father their evil report. Now Israel. Essentially Joseph more than any of his other sons, and the father unto his father their evil report. And or now Israel that loved him, because he was his son and of old age, la as as my father in law would say, the last ram out of his yard. So Illa so we see that and when his brothers saw that his father loved him more than all the brothers, they hated him. Because their dad liked Joseph or loved him more. And I'm sure that created a rift, anyways. and he said unto them, Hear I pray thee this dream which I have dreamed. For behold, we were binded sheaves in the field. And lo, the sheaf sheaf arose and also stood upright, and behold, those sheaves stood round about and made obscence to my sheaf. And his brethren said to him, Shall thou shalt thou indeed reign over us? And the and shalt thou indeed have dominance? or dominion over us and they hated him yet even more and because of this for this dream and for his word. So they were not very happy with their son who was having this dream, Joseph. And the dream yet another dream, so he has another dream. So what what does he do? He goes and tells them what he's dreaming, like you know, and he dreamed yet another dream and told his brethren and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more and Behold the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made up made obstinence to me. So he's over and above them. And he re and he told them told it to their father and to their brethren. His father rebukes him. So Jacob says, Hey, you know, settle down, everybody, and says unto him, What is this dream that you hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brothers deed come to bow down ourselves? to D on this earth to this earth and his brothers envied him. And so there's envy. There's there's there's there's they're they're chiding and they're not happy with him. And you know, he goes on to say But his father observed the saying, and his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem. And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flocks in Shechem. Come and I will send thee unto them. And then and he said to them, him, here I am. So he's basically, you know, come with me, here I am, here is here I am, Dad. And he said unto him, Go I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brothers. And well with the flocks, and bring me word again. So he went out, sent him out in Baal of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. And a certain man found him, and behold, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, What do you seeketh thou? Or what seeketh thou? And he says, I seek my brethren. Tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks. Basically, do you know where they're at? Tell me where they're at, where they fleet where are they feeding them? And the man said that they departed hence or here, for I heard them say they were going to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan. And when they saw him afar, even before he he came near against him, they conspired against him to slay him. And they said one to the another, Behold, the dreamer cometh. So they're picking on him. He ain't even there yet. Come now, therefore, and let us slay him and cast him into some pit, and we will say some evil beast has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of that dream or those that or his dream. And Reuben, who's the oldest, he heard it and he delivered him out of their hands and said, Let us not kill him. Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into the pit that is in. the wilderness and lay no hand upon him that he might rid him out of their lands to deliver him to his father again. Verse 23 And it came to pass when Joseph came unto his brethren, they stripped Joseph of his coat. Remember the coat of many colors, and he was proud of, and they took him and they cast him in the pit, and the pit was empty and there was no water in it. And they sat down to eat. bread, and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and behold, a company of Ishmaelites came from Gilead with their camels, bearing spicery and balm and myrrh, going to carry it down to Egypt. And Judah said unto his brethren, What profit that if we slay our brother and we conceal his blo his blood? Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites. No, we're gonna kill you, we're just gonna sell you. And let us not Our hands be upon him, for he is our brother in our flesh, and brothers were content. So they were content to do that. Everybody signed up for it. They then there passed a Midianite, a merchant and merchantman, and thy drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver, and they brought Joseph to Egypt. And Reuben returned unto the pit, and behold, Joseph was. Not in the pit, and he rent his clothes, And behold, Joseph was not in the pit, and he returned unto his brother, and he said, The child is not, and I whither shall I go? So where should I go? Or where did he go? And they took Joseph's coat and they killed a kid goat and they dipped the coat into blood, and they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father and said that we have found We have found know now whether it be our son's coat or not. We're not sure if it's this coat. So they're they they basically they're really conniving. This is what we found, and we're not sure. And he knew it, that being and he being Jacob, he knew that was his son's coat. he had no doubt about it. And evil beast has devoured and and said this and said, It is my son's coat, and an evil beast has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces or cut in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes and he put on sackcloth upon his loins and mourned. For his son many days. That's what they did in those days. They put on sackcloth and they mourned for for a long time. I know at least ten days, but a lot of times it's longer in some cases. And Allah said, all his sons said, all his daughters rose up, comforted him, and he refused to be comforted. He said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son's mourning. Thus his father wept for him, and the Midianes sold him into Egypt. unto Potiphar and the officer this is an officer of Pharaoh's and a captive of the guard. So what are we seeing here? Jacob is favored by Joseph and he makes that known. He shows his favoritism. That creates a family rift. made him superior over all, and maybe an even an overseer, the manager, even at his young age. So he was 17 years of age, the youngest, and his dad thought more of him than anyone. He had to report he had him report on his son's behavior. And favored his youngest child. He gave him the coat of the superior of all o the overseer, the coat of many colors we've seen. this result created nothing but hate and strife. So there was a lot of jealousies here. So Joseph posted as his favoritism and superiority, being cocky and arrogant and prideful caused division. Folks, I can tell you right now God does not like pride. And if you've got pride in your life, And you can't figure out why your prayer is not being answered, you gotta get along with God. You gotta get along with God, and you gotta settle that. And be humble. Start out with your prayer. Be humble as we come before you as humble servants. it's just a term I use, but he showed a cocky arrogance of attitude by sharing the dream, unwisely shared it, that he was reigning and he was superior over them. So this. dream that he had that I'm no doubt God showed him is a forerunner of him being the second in charge of Egypt in the drought that's gonna come. We're gonna see. the result was more hate and more division when he started telling them about his vision. So he showed this haughtiness, haughtiness being look at me, look at me pride, by sharing a second dream. He was to rule and be a superior over his entire family. Not a good thing. He was rebuked by his father. He's father said, Whoa, time out. You gotta you gotta pull that back. Bump the brakes a little bit here. the result was jealousy, envy, and more division. And we saw that. Jacob's overprotected Joseph, and he overprotected the child, caused more division. So it's getting more for Joseph. So Joseph's brothers were working, but he was kept back home. So Jacob kinda knew that send him out there with his brother. They might whoop his butt because they don't like him. Actually it was worse, right? So Joseph's brothers were out working, and when he came back home, Joseph was sent to go check on their welfare. Go check on your brothers. And one he couldn't find them, where they had left the left the original pasture, and then the man told him they had gone to Dothan and pursued him. And then the brothers sought The revenge against Joseph and the hostility and abuse that caused more division. So they plotted against him. they pl they mocked him, they were making fun of him before they even he even came to him. And they saw revenge to disgust even killing him. I mean, that's a lot of hate. Remember in the Bible tells you if you think something, especially murder, you've already conducted. Like if you are thinking in your mouth in your mind. you're coveting of something, you're sinning. If you're thinking of killing somebody and murder, you've done it already because of your thoughts. That's what God's saying. So you gotta cleanse yourself of that when you have that kind of thinking. revenge against Joseph, right? The hostility, abuse also caused even more division. So they plotted against him, they mocked him they sought to revenge and discuss killing him. the to prove the foolishness of his claim and destiny. We'll kill him and that dream will never come true. That's what they're thinking. And he was saved and interceded to for Reuben. So Ruben, the oldest brother, steps in, kinda saves him from being killed, who would be held more responsible for the welfare of the of his brother. He planned to secretly help Joseph escape back home. That was his plan. So he saved him from being murdered by his brother, because he's the oldest. He's gonna be held accountable with his family. So that was a big deal. So they rejected him. They rejected his authority and they stripped him of his coat. You know, you ain't gonna have this, but they re they rejected him personally. They threw him in a pit, rejected his pleas and cries to be freed. We'll see that later in forty two, chapter for forty two. A cruel, callous spirit while they were eating. They were just mean-spirited people, his brothers at this time. And turnabout's gonna be fair play when it comes up in the future. And they looked and they saw Keravan and Ishmaelites trading and coming. And Judah had suggested selling Joseph into slavery for money. Judah suggested they sell him and escape the guilt for murdering his brother. So give him away sell him We don't kill him, so we're not blamed for it, and we won't have that on our conscience. So they bargained with the Miniite traders and sold Joseph to be a slave, remember, twenty pieces of silver. And Reuben returns and finds Joseph missing. His concern was what? For himself. He concerned for himself and he was the oldest because he knew he was going to be held accountable. And And would be held responsible for Joseph's welfare. So the brothers sought to clear themselves and deception by lying and causing the division. They worked out a cruel scheme, terrible lie to deceive their father Jacob, Israel. They the deception did work because he well what happened? The the result was deep alienation. Jacob suffered unbearable grief. he refused to be comforted by his children. can't he's just he's in a place. He you're not people often can be like that in in grief. Some grief never goes away, folks. I don't know how you know old school people say, What are you crying for? You gotta get over that. That's pull up your butt bootstraps, nineteen seventies conversation is not today because people grieve differently and that happens. And they release it at certain in different times. It may be the strangest time. So remember the grief is an emotion that has to be expressed. You gotta go through I think it's Googler Ross wrote the different mechanisms of processing death and grief and all that. You have to go through these situations. But anyways, so the so so he wouldn't be comforted with withdrawal. He just pulled away from everybody. He was in deeper al alienation alienation. And J Jacob considered to join Joseph in death and Shu Sheol, which they that that's like hell. And Joseph was sold into Egypt. the division began within the home rule. So as we go through this, we see this favoritism doesn't fli does not hold well in the situation. Jacob's Jacob's buying into this and making it even worse. He's staring the pot. Favoritism and partial partiality always steers f heart feelings with family, especially mother, father, neglect of children, parents can favor one child over another. I heard it said one time that every time somebody spoke with their grandmother or their mother, I can't remember who it was, but every child that they spoke with they always said, Well, you're my favorite. And it was literally every single child. So that's what this this grandmother I think said was, Well you just remember you're my favorite. So I find that funny. But so nobody knew everybody thought they were the favorite. And so a child can favor a parent one parent over another too. That happens. the cocky arrogance and pride and hatred. I gotta tell you folks worst place to be. You know, Joseph showed that cockiness, that arrogance. He brought some of this on himself. And what Joseph did was not wise. You don't run around and just stick your chest out and start being cocky. so we must the lesson here is we must not be cocky. arrogant, brideful, haughty, haughty tottie, I'm better than you towards people, boastful attitude unalienates us with other people and it turns people away and is above all attitudes most foolishly and damaging. You're gonna damage your relationship this way if you use this. So we see that the child is overprotected. The first thought comes to my mind is overprotecting a child as to it can happen. There's two bad ways things can happen. Number one, it causes problems for the overprotect child could be the moment or make a mom and or dad or boy or girl out of a child. they could keep the child from growing up and maturing. You gotta let fail. You let you gotta let learn. If you make a child selfish or self self centered. I say you've heard me say it before. Focus on building the character of your children and grandchildren and teaching them and admonishing them in teaching the Word of God. What what does the Bible say, especially in the old testament? When you wake up, when you lie down, and and and whenever and every, you're always pouring to your children and grandchildren the things of the Bible, and you want them to have the character, a biblical character and a heart of love. is first. It's not if you get into Harvard or you get into Yale or MIT, that's not it. Or your grades are the those are all nice to have. But I gotta tell you, college only lasts a short amount of time. Lifelong character is important. What's my wife always uses? It's better to have a good name than the riches. It's in Proverbs. So he's rejected the malice of the family. They start mocking him. Reuben basically steps in at this point, tries to tries to help him out or head this off. And Joseph's brothers, as they rejected him, they become so filled with hostility against him. They were bitter hostility that seeps into families. I've always said this: you could be bitter. Or you could be better. And if you're bitter, because you have a choice when you wake up every day, when your feet hit that floor, you can either be better or bitter. If you stay bitter, that's gonna seep into everybody, your relationships, and around people don't want to be around you. So yeah, you gotta be you can be b don't be don't be bitter. how does husbands and wives how many husbands and wives are bitter? How many keep score? How many how many are bitter towards each other? It's not a competition, folks. You're on the same team. Remember that. You're gonna see things differently. Remember, when you see something from your eyes, your learnings or your upbringings, your culture, and all those things are gonna shift, and you normally speak from that worldview of yourself, and you're speaking into it. I've always challenged people by saying, try to see it from their perspective opposed to your perspective. What is it they want from you? Have that conversation. So you're able to discern and not get into the fight. my wife says I'm cryptic. I don't say things in full terms. I'm thinking it, but I just can't say it. So I have to work on that. So anyways, how many children are bitter against their parents today? Folks, you're to honor your parents. Doesn't say love It says you're to honor Are you honoring your parents? Because if you're not, that's a sin. That's a big one too. So there's more deception, there's more lying. it continues to cause more division. They work out the scheme to get rid of them. deceiving family members, lying to them will always cause a division. It's it's never gonna end well. Just just so you know. Lying destroys the trust. I always say a good lie never lasts long. You Matthew talks about let your yea be yea, your nay be nay. Let your yes be yes, let your no be no. No in between. Just like the Bible is. People want to, well, they'll read a verse say, Well, this is what it means to me. No, no, no. That it's black and white, good or evil. Whatever it's trying to show, it's trying to teach you. And that's how we should approach it. So when we our word and having a good testimony is Always doing what you say you're gonna do and You know, you don't make promises you can't keep. And if you know me, I've told you the story where my daughter once when she was in I I don't know if she was in third, fourth, fifth, sixth I don't know how great it was. My wife can tell you. But I had a coffee, tea or me job. I worked around the clock, hundred I mean lots of hours. I never I burned the candle on both ends for a better part of sixteen years. regrettably and my family suffered from it and my daughter had to be picked up or something and I said, Well I'll pick you up and I said I'll pick you up at like one o'clock. So I had told my daughter that and my wife said, Well I'll make sure I get she go No no dad's gonna pick me up. She said, What? Your dad's gonna pick you up 'cause I'm always working. I got in I I I leave early and end late every day. And Even the days I was off, I wasn't off. Even the days I was on vacation, I wasn't off. It was always something going on. When you got a thousand people or five thousand people, there's always problems. So people problems too, by the way. she and I'll never forget what she said. She said, yeah, dad's gonna pick me up. Your mom's like, Well he's working. She goes, Yeah, I know, but he's gonna pick me up. She goes how do you how do you know he's gonna up? Well, 'cause he always does what he says he's gonna do. Did you catch that? He always does what he says he's gonna do. That is a character trait that I hope every one of you have with your children. You know if you promise them something and you don't deliver, you really let down. So I even try to do it today. And I do it everything I do. I try to be as honest, open. I certainly am not gonna cause a lie because I'm held I'm held accountable. And I don't think we ha we should be doing that. So it causes more lion will destroy trust faster than anything in the world. and it'll just it'll destroy dependability. People are gonna stop listening to you. You know, the guy that crawl I mean, what is that? The cried wolf, fire fire, whatever, and nobody ever came. The moral of that story was you don't become dependable, people just blow you off. And that's what happens when you have a liar that you deal with. And somebody that's making up stories, lies and everything like that's not a good place to be folks. Let your yay be yay, your nay be nay. You can read that for yourself. so you think about it as this person deceives, there's feelings that cannot that they can't trust him. We're not gonna trust this guy. He thinks he's better than us. How many wives today are deceiving their husbands? How many husbands are deceiving their wives? How many children are deceiving their parents? I could tell you that I think I got a few. How many parents are deceiving their children? I you know, I I I don't know. I hope that people are honest with me as I am honest with them, but the sovereignty of God Yes. a division within our home. And when I say overruled by God, our home is overruled by God, J Joseph was taken to Egypt as a slave to Potiphar. We know how this story's gonna go, I'm not gonna spoil it, but the thought here is how wonderful is God God's mercy and that He takes so many of us who are sinful so far down and He forgives us and works with with things Out of good. God does not junk us. He doesn't fool us. He doesn't play games with us. He he uses us even after we've sinned so much or so terribly and gloriously merciful towards us. He's a God of mercy, folks. Simply put, he's a God of mercy. And I hope let's see if I got any more slides before I jump off here. I know it's a little long, but we did two chapters. And bear with me. And you know the good news is we haven't we haven't jumped off here. All right. So we see Israel is now the center point. Israel has not yet attained the nation status. And then we see why Joseph in this chapter, and Israel, which is Jacob. why is Joseph not considered a patriarch? Perhaps because he did not have the direct two way communication with God. Maybe he wasn't I don't have that answer, but God certainly didn't communicate with him directly the way he communicated to the other patriarchs. so you know you have to think of the restored cult statue of Joseph found in the in Egypt. So somebody that okay, my friends that are are atheists and don't believe in it, here's a actual statue of Joseph that was found in Israel. I mean in Egypt. Proof positive, proof positive, but they'll say no. All right, so God's governing dynamics. First one was division, election, and then separation. And then we see sanctification sanctification is this governing dynamic work. And the common is the world status. holy is the status of God, and we're set apart. If you are in Christ, you are to be, what does he say? Be ye holy, for I am holy, and he dwells inside you. He cannot dwell in a temple of sinfulness and lying and deceitful and all this other stuff. So you have to constantly, it's a work in progress. It's dynamic. It continually goes in your life. It doesn't a one and done. We talked a little bit about that in your salvific testimony. and then second, governing dynamics is a divine providence and it's his will. You heard me say it the other day. Are you praying for God's will in your life? If you're not doing that and you're trying to do it yourself, he is not a God that is Well, just pray to me and I'll give it to you. Or you can have this. I could try you can control God by praying certain ways. Now, if it be his will, he'll answer the prayer. Remember that. Don't get too prideful here. And divine providence is God working his free will largely unseen and using man's free will. So God is wanting us to choose him. And man usually is ignorant of it and often Yet it often is a party to it. So they don't they don't there's a lot of unbelief like that. So Joseph, he's seventeen, here's the coat of many colors, currently living in Canaan. Isaac was still living when Joseph was taken to Egypt. The prophetic blessing given to to Abram was na was about to unfold. Let's go back to Genesis 15, 13. God said to Abram, it wasn't Abraham yet. Know for a certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs. So all the way back to 15, we're in chapter 37. know for certain that your descendants will be strange. His brothers, his family, in a strange land that is not theirs. Egypt is not theirs. Or they will be enslaved and oppressed for 400 years. The the Israelite. people were enslaved for four hundred years and they were oppressed. Verse 14, But I will judge the nation whom they will serve, and afterwards they will come out with many possessions. So he's gonna save and that's what he does. He sends Moses. Remember? All right, so I'm gonna stop the share. All right, folks, I know it's a little long. We'll chop it up, two chapters. I hope it's a blessing to you. if you have any questions, please reach out and again put your faith, hope, and c in Jesus Christ and continue to honor him, continue to honor your parents, and everything in your life should be a progression of learning, seek seeking truth in the scriptures and making sure that you're doing the things that we're commanded to do. Take care. God bless. Chaplain B.
