Jerry: Welcome back to another episode of the Co Extrusion Podcast. So we just got back from Boston. We said that last week also. so the reason I say that is because in Boston, JJ, you told me that you went to some of the 3D scanning booths. So I know you went to Revapoint, Creality, and Scanology. ⁓ Scanology might be one that a lot of you guys listening haven't ever heard about. JJ Shankles: Yes. Jerry: definitely more prosumer and professional. But, so I know previously that you haven't really, I don't want say experienced 30 scanning, but you never really dabbled much in it. And I'm curious, kind of like what you learned, what you see the use cases are and kind of just. JJ Shankles: Yeah, I really hadn't... I'd seen... There's always a booth of someone scanning something, but had never actually sat there and talked to them and learned and got the hands-on with three different brands I tried out scanners from and kind of like learning... learned a lot, I would say, about scanning. And so I'm really interested about actually getting one in now to really try the scanology being the prosumer. Definitely they were showing us one that they were like, ⁓ it's like an entry level one. And price-wise, it was not. Jerry: $6,300. So, so just before we like dive deep, so when when I say scan ology, scan ology is actually broken into two companies, there's 3d vogue v okay, and there's scan ology. So 3d vogue is the prosumer market, their scanners are between six and $10,000. And I know you're kind of choking a little bit here. It's pretty prosumer is designed for someone that wants JJ Shankles: Yeah, we were like, Mm-hmm. Hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: to start a business that utilizes 3D scanning. it's not 3D scanning is not your business, right? So if your business is 3D scanning, then you'd get a scanology scanner. And then all of you guys have heard of RevoPoint. RevoPoint started as a consumer company with scanners between 250 and like $1,000. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jerry: And then actually, they're starting to branch out into the prosumer market. I think their prosumer scanners are like three to six thousand. And then Creality has the Raptor, which is three thousand. So I think we're going to talk. think those are going to talk about today. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yes, yeah. And yeah, it was super cool talking to them and seeing, like really trying it out and like learning of like, there's a whole technique of like using a scanner of it's not just like pick it up and figure it out. And with scanology, it was more that way. I was able to pick it up while still filming and it got a good scan and it's like, a really nice scanner connected to a really nice computer. Jerry: Yeah. JJ Shankles: was able to do a lot. ⁓ And then I went over to Rev-O-Point and I learned afterwards they handed, I don't know why the one I was actually testing out wasn't their newer ones. It was one of their older, I don't know. But it was not working very well. It was losing track a lot easier because it was a quarter of the price. Jerry: Yeah. So what Yeah. so I guess let's, so I don't know, I guess kind of, so we can have a little bit of structure here. Like let's, let's start with Revapoint, right? Let's start, let's start cheap and then get better. So, ⁓ I think it's interesting and I've worked with Revapoint a lot, so it's, hard to say I'm not biased. I, I, I do know their weaknesses, so I try to be as unbiased as possible, but, ⁓ I think it's interesting to see the world that we've come in and Revapoint, they trust their products enough to do live demos. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yes. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Jerry: The Revapoint booth is 100 % live demos. So they have products that are functional and good for a consumer standpoint. for instance, like they've got I don't know which one you picked up. Was it like it was the one with the screen? JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. It was their full standalone. I have it pulled up right here. It's the Morocco. So it's a standalone, trying to process everything inside this little handheld device. A $2,000 handheld device. It's not crazy high end. Their other one, I was able to get decent scan just sitting there without really trying. But then this one, I was trying to one hand hold it and... Jerry: you ⁓ JJ Shankles: film at the same time and yeah it was losing track of itself and then the lady got it and I was able to film her looked easy just like a single pass scanned it great I was like okay cool if you know what you're doing it's gonna look a lot better yeah Jerry: Okay, I'm glad you mentioned that. I'm glad you mentioned that. So A, the Morocco is the one scanner that I've used from Revapoint that I've never owned, but I've used five or six times and every time I use it, I just I don't have a good experience just personally. They've got other scanners on display as well, but JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jerry: that you bring up a good point, you know, the lady picked it up and she just scanned it and that and it just worked and that's something that's important to note because in the consumer space, at least with my experience, going from a couple of Creality scanners, I've used ⁓ from the rubber point lineup, I've used the POP2, I've used the Inspire, I've used the ⁓ the range and the range two every so I've had really good luck with the range and the range too, because they have higher field of view. You can see more at once and you can also capture frames faster. But one thing I've learned about 3D scanning in the consumer space is that it just takes practice. just you have to become familiar with A, the part you're scanning, which is a different part every time. But B, you have to become familiar with the scanner. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jerry: how quickly you can move the scanner because you're capturing fewer frames. The number of frames per second. Actually, this is a really good. This is a really good example. So some of the newer scanners today capture at 90 frames per second. Right. When the pop two first came out, the Revo Point pop two, it scanned at nine frames per second. You have to hold the pop two perfectly still for 10 seconds. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jerry: before you can capture the same amount of data as the newer scanners in one second. And if you're anything like me, your hands are a little shaky. So scanners have come a long way. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Or any amount of, like, the moving it around, like the... at 9 frames a second, if you pan across an object, you've skipped big gaps in that object. Like, if you move slightly slow at it, slightly fast at all, versus the newer ones, 90, you can quickly pan across an object, boom, you've picked up every detail on it, like... yeah. Jerry: Huge gaps. Yeah, with a lot of those older scanners and even some of the consumer scanners. So a consumer scanner scanning at like 40 frames per 30 or 40 frames per second is pretty good. But like, you got to move like this fast. And that's not an exaggeration. So for instance, look, look at the scanology scanners. I was doing this. And I was it was capturing and it was not losing track and it was very wonderful. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Jerry: So the field of view is another important one, right? The more you can see it once, the better. So you got to understand how these algorithms work. So you point the 30 scanner at an object, and a lot of them they track via one of two methods. They look at scanning dots, and those dots are relative in space, and it can track those individual dots so it knows when the scanner's looking at this angle or at this angle, it can... JJ Shankles: Hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: it can translate and rotate the image it sees so that it actually, I guess, aligns with the previous frame that it scanned. Cats! And so, oh, I see now the cats made me forget what I was saying. Oh, the other scanning method is based off of geometry or so physical features. So if I tried to like, let's take a baseball, for instance. JJ Shankles: We both have our cats in the lap. Mm-hmm. Jerry: It's almost perfectly round or a racquetball. It's perfectly round no matter what angle you look at it from. There is no unique geometry, so it would be difficult for physical geometry to be able to piece together like where each frame is. But the Orient. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm, yeah. Yeah, to orient. It needs to be an orientable object. Even with a baseball where it has stripes on it. But which stripe is it? Like, if the scanner thinks this stripe is the stripe on the other side of the baseball, now it can throw itself off. Like, yeah. Jerry: Yeah. So the scanner sees a frame, one frame and like it your cell phone can take a picture, right? The hardware isn't that impressive. It's the software and the algorithms that are impressive because it can then orient those frames and in whatever way the most accurately. ⁓ So JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: That's the big difference. Like those algorithms, it's like the software that I see is a huge, plays a huge factor in the functionality of getting a good 3D scan. ⁓ And she's trying to eat the cord. So it's like the software is like really big and really important for getting good scans. ⁓ But with scanology and 3D Voke, it was wild how good JJ Shankles: Hahaha. ⁓ yeah. Jerry: those scanners were. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Of like, without any dots on the object, and it being reflective, it was like a hubcap, ⁓ and scanning over it, and there were no ghosting artifacts floating in space, ⁓ compared to when I scanned a car part over at Creality's booth. Yeah, there were a bunch of ghosting artifacts kind of floating, and I was like, what's going on? And they were like, well, it's reflective, that's gonna happen. And I was like, well, scanology knows how to... Jerry: That's gonna have... JJ Shankles: fix those like it was easy in post like after you finish the scan you click it was a one button you press and it cleared out all it knows floating random objects are not part of the scan so delete those like it's easy one click but scanology already did it Jerry: Yeah. Yeah. So another. ⁓ yeah. Well, so that's ⁓ like talking about the same lines of what you're saying. So scanology can scan to mesh. That is a going to require a truly like next level computer because. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Jerry: It is creating a mesh live as you're scanning the data, which means, A, your data, your scan data has to be good enough that it can do that, which with Rev-o-Point, or let me just say, I'm not going to name names. I'll just say consumer scanners in general, because it's not not poke an eyes, but just in general with consumer scanners, the software is just not good enough to be able to create a mesh from all the data you see because JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Jerry: If you scan a ⁓ plate in front of you, you're going to get those islands of data that it sees. It can cut those islands out, but it needs you to tell it to cut those islands out because you need to tell it, this actually is bad data, versus the scanology in 3DVoke, it doesn't even get those islands. They just... JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Jerry: very rarely appear. So. JJ Shankles: Yeah, that does make me wonder what type of PC, because the PCs were all under the desk in a box. You couldn't see what they were working with down there. ⁓ But I wonder. Jerry: So you wonder, and so this is a really good thing about RevoPoint. I really love RevoPoint. So we're doing a little bit of an unfair comparison here because RevoPoint, even if we take their most expensive consumer scanner, the Range 2 or 3 or whatever, it's like 1,200 bucks, right? And we're comparing it to a company, ⁓ 3DVoke, which spawned from Scanology. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jerry: Scanology developed $65,000 scanners and that was where they started and they took their expertise and they built prosumer devices that sell for $6,300. So it's a little bit of an unfair comparison, but to your point of computational hardware, if the cat will stop eating the cord, what is really, really wonderful about ReboPoint, your cell phone, you can wirelessly connect your scanners JJ Shankles: You Mmm. Jerry: to your cell phone. And they create a special mount, which allows you to affix your cell phone to the scanner. So you have one try or one like handheld, like monopodi, like whatever, and your 3D scanning and your phone screen is the screen. It's capturing and processing all of the data on the phone. And this is my preferred method. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Jerry: of actually capturing data with my Revapoint scanners because it's so convenient. It's wireless. Or if there's a wire, it's from the 3D scanner into my phone. And you don't have to worry about like, yeah, ⁓ you might not be able to do any of the ⁓ raw data compute on your phone. You can, but it's a little bit it's not advised in my opinion. But to collect the raw data. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. directly in, yeah. Mm-hmm. Jerry: Great. And then you can, you can plug your phone into the computer or use like a wifi transfer and transfer the whole three scan project over to your computer. And now you did just wirelessly scanned everything. So that's a, it's a very nice use case for like Revo point and highly doubt that, with the processing of 3d Vogue and scan all and scanology, I highly doubt that's an option. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. They're more like, no, you need a pretty powerful computer connected here. It's a different customer base. They're not looking for convenience. They're looking for raw power and usability. That's really cool. Yeah. Jerry: ⁓ yeah. Oh yeah. So... But like, okay, so from RevoPoint's standpoint, they've got scanners that are 250 bucks. I think the POP 4 is like 500 bucks or something like that. The range is 900 or 1000. Something along those lines. And then they've got a blue light laser, the Mini. Are they up to the Mini? Oh yeah, I've had the Mini and the Mini 2 as well. Or the Mini... Do have the Mini 2? Yeah, I forgot about it. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yes, it's right here. There's the mini too. You know all of them. Jerry: That's one thing you get with scanology, right? Like they've got all those lasers built in. So you got the blue light laser, the IR light, all of those are built into one. Which I'm, actually think Corality might, which we haven't talked about Coralities. I think Coralities might have some of those technologies mixed in as well. But those, those different scanning technologies allow you to scan different things. So the blue light is going to give you super fine, tiny detail. The IR laser is good for, I think it's like JJ Shankles: Yeah. Yeah. Hmm. Jerry: scanning humans, I actually don't know why. And there was another one as well that ⁓ JJ Shankles: Yeah. the like a single line scan. I don't know why they call it different, but a lot of them had that like there's three different lasers and one of them is a single line of blue light. Somehow they call it different. Jerry: Yeah, so single so the single line blue light, I guess allows you to focus more energy into that one in that one beam. So you can so you can like penetrate deeper. ⁓ You can scan deeper inside crevices and cracks, which instead of scanning like cross hatched with like 40 with like 40 lasers, you collect tons of data all at once. You're collecting less data because it's only one one line. But you're able to JJ Shankles: Mmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Jerry: I guess you're able to penetrate deeper and scan deeper into crevices and things that it's actually very it would be very useful for ⁓ you wouldn't scan a whole entire object like that. But to get ⁓ remaining detail, it's good. Yeah. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. For complex and delicate little parts, it seemed like it worked really well for that. Yeah. ⁓ Jerry: So we've talked a lot about like the kinds of scanners and I have so my thought about the 3D scanning market is I hope because I'm an engineer as well. So like I feel like I generally understand the best use case for this particular use case. And I think 3D scanning in the consumer space is misunderstood. Right. So and I want to get your opinion on this as well. So. I started out thinking, ⁓ I can 3D scan JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: a trophy, right? And I can just and I can and I can 3D print the trophy and recreate the trophy and I can just make it a different color or like if if you're you know, if you had like ⁓ collectible things, you can 3D scan them and have extras and stuff but you can do that but you're not going to get good results. 3D scanning is really good for reverse engineering and design work. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Mmm, yeah. Jerry: And I feel like that is where a lot of people misunderstand its best use case because like if I wanted to 3D scan this stapler, I would be faster to like design this by hand, just take measurements and design this by hand rather than just 3D scanning it and printing it. Also, what would this give me? It wouldn't give me much. But if I wanted to like design an adjustment piece for it, JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Say if you wanted to print a TPU cover over top of it, so it's softer on your hand when you press it. Jerry: I get 30 sk- Yeah. Yeah. How am I like, generally, like if I if I were to measure by hand, I would get generalized measurements, right? And it would look it would look good, but it wouldn't be perfect. But if I 3D scan this, then I can get the actual exact measurements of like this curve here and you know, all the sizing and stuff. And that's where I see the best use case for 3D scanning is in the consumer space. But like, I'm curious what what what you think. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, I feel like I got a way better understanding of like use cases of 3D scanning. And I do feel like the consumer side of it, like your average hobbyist, I feel like they need to rent out. I wish there was a way to rent a scanner for so many people who have like, and I've thought of one or two use cases for it and been like, ⁓ it'd be kind of cool to try it for this or try it for that. That's not a $500 per... I've never thought of recurring uses enough to be like, this is worth spending $500 on getting a scanner for my two use cases on a consumer hobbyist side. I just don't see that many recurring use cases for it. I think you might use it once a year, maybe twice a year. But businesses, there's so many use cases of... ⁓ someone who wanted to, created a custom little mount for lasers. ⁓ So he could do laser scanning mug, laser engraving mugs. So he scanned a mug and made a custom mold that it fits perfectly down inside of. ⁓ Or the industrial side of things were really cool, where they were like, we have this robotic scanner, giant massive scanner. We attached the scan piece to a robotic arm. Jerry: Mmm. JJ Shankles: and it will scan every body panel for Ford. I'll throw out the name. ⁓ And so every new door panel that comes in, they can quickly scan it and verify it's good or bad. Instead of one out of every hundred doing a spot check, they can personally scan every single one because it's so fast to scan and it's good. Scan, it's good. Scan, it's good. ⁓ So for more of industrial side of things, verifying parts coming in. Jerry: ⁓ yeah. Yeah. JJ Shankles: to make sure everything is to spec. ⁓ It's like, ⁓ that's a huge use case, but that's not a personal use case. Jerry: Yeah. So. Yeah, yeah. So I'll tell you a use case that I used it for and this is I'm just going to point my phone up to the screen. So this robotic lawnmower, ⁓ you see this little like hat thing that it's got on it, right? So I'm not saying that they took the idea from me. However, I have a video on my YouTube channel where I this is the like the the Luba 2 or the Mimotion 2 or something or JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Jerry: Yeah, this is the number two version. The number one version doesn't have that, right? I took my 3D scanner, my Rev-Up Point 3D scanner, and I scanned the entire body of it. It's got like super custom flowy lines on it and it slopes down. And I made a mount that like affixes to the top of it. And it's got like pegboard, like it's got pegboard style holes in the bottom of it. So then you can put screws in and literally affix things. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Mmm. Yeah. Jerry: to the lawnmower. It's a robotic lawnmower, by the way. I put a camera on it, right? That's a camera. Well, or it's a 3D, it's a LiDAR sensor or whatever 3D scanning technology they use so you don't like bump into things. But it's a camera. I put a camera on mine. I'm not saying they took it from me. But so it's, it's a good use case for something like this because JJ Shankles: Yeah, yeah. Nice. Yeah. Mmm. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah. Jerry: that is a truly custom organic shape like measuring organic shapes is very hard and recreating them is very hard or next impossible without getting scanned geometry and from that when you when you put that piece on like it fits like a glove it would have been impossible without that or if you are building a custom like if you're if you work in a like a JJ Shankles: I'm sorry. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Jerry: I was gonna say if you work in a machine shop, but I'm talking about like small use cases for you and me, like if you're working on your car, and you're trying to like do a turbo build or something, and you need to get custom piping routed or whatever, you could 3d scan the engine bay, and it doesn't have to be perfect. But it just has to be good enough to be able to bring it into CAD and then bend tubing around so you see generally where the tubing is going to go. And then and the and the JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: how strong the bends would be. And that's not, you don't need a perfect scan, you just need a usable scan. ⁓ JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah, feel like automotive, there's always people throughout the automotive use cases because there are a lot of non-straight lines. I think, or maybe there's just money in it. I don't know why there's so much automotive that's always pushed as a use case there. ⁓ But I still feel like if I was working on my car and I was like, yeah, I really wish I could scan this clip. Jerry: Think? JJ Shankles: make another one or make something that fits together really well. It's like, man, I wish I could rent a thousand dollar scanner for a weekend. Or if I needed to replace a custom antique door handle or doorknobs or drawer pulls or something, you know, it's like, I can think of cool use cases where it's like, yeah, we are missing one and I wish I could scan this one to make a second one. But if I go through and all my ideas I've ever had have I could count on one hand. It's like, cool, I could buy a $200 scanner and struggle, or $2,000 scanner, and kind of waste that money. it's gonna sit in a drawer a lot of the time. Jerry: Yeah. . You do make a really good point though, like being able to rent a tool like that that you don't use often, or you only have like one real use case for would be pretty good. I just think I do think though that the way the consumer sees 3D scanning, it's like trying to use a tool unnecessarily. And people need to understand like, what are the real use cases like, for instance, that ⁓ that mic, that mic JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: holder thing. Yes, you don't need to 3D scan the bottom of your microphone in order to recreate this. Just some things are truly easier using calipers and measuring them. and I'm part of some 3D scanning groups on Facebook. And JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Jerry: Some things like who am I to go bash someone's fun, right? Like if someone's going to use a 3D scanner and I think it would be easier to just use a caliper, like I'm not going to go attack them for like maybe that they're enjoying themselves, right? But ⁓ in some cases, I do see a lot of people using 3D scanners for applications. I feel like might just be faster and easier if we go back to like older tech. So your whole like comment about JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm, yeah. Jerry: cars are normally seen in the 3D scanning world because there's a lot of geometry that is super difficult to recreate. So like this cup. If I wanted to make a lid for this cup, I would not 3D scan this cup. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Yeah, it's like, ⁓ it's a cylinder. Or yeah, inside here, it's another cylinder. Cylinders and cubes put together to make anything. It's like, probably just 3D model it, because taking your scan, you still have to manipulate it and work with it and do things with it. And it's like, you're still working on it for a while. You could just start from scratch and work on it for a while and get maybe a better result. Jerry: ⁓ yeah. Also, have taken scan data and I am I can I can fight my I can fight my way through CAD like with Geometry like squares triangles lines great, but when you when you dump in a whole entire like raw data point array JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: Just everything that you knew goes out the door. Simply how to import the geometry into Fusion 360 or the blender is just different and difficult. And it creates a whole nother like problem. JJ Shankles: I do think Blender will be a lot easier. I'm hoping to get one of these to actually play with. And the whole idea of dealing with a point cloud of vertexes and faces is like, oh yeah, Blender's great at that. And Fusion 360, whenever I've tried to modify existing STLs, that's why I stopped using Fusion 360, because it chunks along and crashes. Versus Blender is like, yeah, we're an animation software. We're used to this. Jerry: Not good. So. Yeah, like, ultimately, I've really loved and enjoyed RevoPoint scanners. I have done a lot of things with them, with those scanners that I that would be completely impossible for me without them. Right. It's just a matter of how much time do you have? Because even though these scanners are significantly better than they were five years ago. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: There's still sub $1,000 and there's it's still a whole new skill to learn. learn how to use the scanner. And once you've learned how to use the scanner, learn how to use the scan data. It's a lot of skills. So it's like JJ Shankles: Yeah. And you've bought these yourself. Like, it's not like you've just received a lot of free scanners to play with. Jerry: So I've bought one of them. So I bought the POP 2 and I bought the mini maybe? I can't remember. Or maybe it the... I have bought some, yes. But I have received some. And it is important to know that if I've received... I have received more for free and I will say the bad things when they need to be said, right? They are difficult to use in certain cases. 3D scanning... It's fun. JJ Shankles: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Jerry: It's fun. I've like yelled and cursed when no one was around. It's fun. I love it. But like, that's kind of what we do in our like, we play with like, Corraldy Ender 3 pros that jam every 20 minutes. We do it to ourselves. JJ Shankles: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm excited to hopefully get, think, one of these realities I'm going to get seeing their lineup. Because now they do have a pretty good lineup of cheap to there's a full standalone separate one running an Android system and other one. ⁓ It's cool that there's multiple brands out there now all competing for that consumer space. Yeah. Jerry: Mm. can only make it better, right? Like when more people get, when I first got into 30 scanning, it was only Rev-O-Point and like a year later, Creality released a scanner which was diabolically bad, like really bad. I bought one and I couldn't even like make it collect data. like, that's how bad it was. so anyway, I... JJ Shankles: Yeah. Oof. Jerry: I am I'm actually going to look at the is the Raptor, the Creality's new one. Sir, OK. JJ Shankles: The SurMoon. SurMoon S1 and then X1 is a little bit more... there were some specialty features for an extra thousand dollars where he's like, if you're scanning cars you might want this one. And then the SurMoon P1 is their standalone ⁓ device, which it can also be connected to a computer if you want more processing power, which was a cool feature that it's like, ⁓ cool, you're not like stuck using this Android processor in here. Jerry: Mmm Huh. Yeah, I've done enough scanning that I haven't used a Crowdy scanner in a while. I used one at a conference. I didn't use it this year in Boston, but I used it last year in Detroit. And I was excited to see where they're going. And I think I'm going to get a Crowdy scanner and try it out. But yeah. JJ Shankles: could be tethered. Yes. Mm-hmm. Jerry: The consumer space is exciting. Like it's difficult to use in some cases, but it's getting better and where the use case is like you don't have another choice.
