Allen: Well, welcome back to the S C C Saver Podcast. My name is Alan, Pastoral Apprentice at Sanibel Community Church, one of your co hosts, and has always well not always always, but always joined by another pastor. Another, yeah. Who this time happens to be Jeremy Rennie. Jeremy Rennie. That's right. Away for a couple of weeks. Maybe thanks to my compatriots who did a phenomenal job co hosting this. Yes, they did. They dude I we've talked about this in this episode before, but Jeramie: Well, welcome back to the S C C Saver Podcast. They dude I we've talked about this in this episode before, but Allen: We're just so blessed to have such a great staff and the pastoral team who bless us currently all the time. You're gone. It's just like nothing skips a beat. The the preaching of the word, the ministry, the life, the godliness. It's just so encouraging. So Yeah. And and really I I think you know, the the biblical model that we see and that I I'm always trying to strive for is a plurality of shepherds. So that includes the elders that include who are also pastors. Pastors are elders, elders are pastors. Jeramie: We're just so blessed to have such a great staff and the pastoral team who bless us currently all the time. Allen: So that's all the that's all the elders and it's all our associate pastors. So so the model that that I you know we're trying to build here is not like I'm the visionary leader, blah, blah, blah. And these are like the staff that I hire to to carry out my whatever. Right. But it's like, no, we're a plurality of shepherds and we're all interchangeable. And maybe I have a like a role in the organization in a kind of lead leadership role, but Jeramie: So that's all the that's all the elders and it's all our associate pastors. So so the model that that I you know we're trying to build here is not like I'm the visionary leader, blah, blah, blah. And these are like the staff that I hire to to carry out my whatever. Right. But it's like, no, we're a plurality of shepherds and we're all interchangeable. And maybe I have a like a role in the organization in a kind of lead leadership role, but Allen: Really biblically, all pastors are elders, all these are pastors. So we should be interchangeable like that. Yeah. And it's sweet and we see the fruit and the benefit of the fruit. Yeah. The church is the church is blessed by multiple shepherds. Like I can't do everything. I can't connect in every way that people need. And so it takes a whole group. Yeah. Yeah. So it's good. But we're glad to have you back. None of the It's great to be back. We do love being back. We do miss you when you're gone. I miss you guys too. I'll tell you. I I it's always fun when you're on vacation to go to different churches, but then you come back to your your own church and you're like, man, I Jeramie: Really biblically, all pastors are elders, all these are pastors. I I it's always fun when you're on vacation to go to different churches, but then you come back to your your own church and you're like, man, I Allen: Yeah. That's great. So dude, how are you doing? You you you got injured this week. I did. Yeah. I was lifting weights on bench pressing. I was bench pressing, and unfortunately, when I was going down, I felt just a rip near my peck and bicep. And unf because I've had friends that have done this, I knew exactly what it was. You knew, right there. Yeah, I knew that you you like blue blue biceps. Jeramie: Yeah. Allen: peck. Yeah, I tore my peck. yeah. Yeah. Try not to visualize that. Yeah. Yeah. It's pretty black and blue in the corner of my head. Yeah. Yeah. That was the wrong way of getting ink done. Funny enough, there's ink on that arm. So Yeah. Are you in are you in a lot of pain? that night I wanted to throw up. Uhhuh. now I'm fine. No, you're fine. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jeramie: peck. Allen: You how how are you how's your faith in the I mean, you know, hey, here's like real life, right? Trials happen, things, accidents happen, you don't expect. Right. How's your faith in all this? Yeah, man. I think when it first originally happened, I literally was out in the parking lot and I'm like, God, why? Why does this have to happen? Yeah. You know, how j yeah, so it's just really frustrated. Doesn't it seem like suffering is always ill timed? Yeah. Like it's like, God, if you had to do this, like why now? Yeah, why now? Yeah. Yeah. And that just feels like I'm kinda at that point right now where it's like Jeramie: You how how are you how's your faith in the I mean, you know, hey, here's like real life, right? Trials happen, things, accidents happen, you don't expect. Right. How's your faith in all this? Yeah, man. I think when it first originally happened, I literally was out in the parking lot and I'm like, God, why? Why does this have to happen? Yeah. You know, how j yeah, so it's just really frustrated. Doesn't it seem like suffering is always ill timed? Yeah. Like it's like, God, if you had to do this, like why now? Yeah, why now? Yeah. Yeah. And that just feels like I'm kinda at that point right now where it's like Allen: Learning, growing, thinking about next steps, life, ministry, schooling, seminary, all that. And it's just like boom, here's this trial to deal with. So I think originally it was kind of a side, I'm like, Why? frustration, confusion, and you know, so then I'm just at one point I'm like, God, you're making a man out of me. I was like, I don't know what you're gonna do through this, but I just know that it is gonna work to my benefit in his glory, even if it means like suffering. Like I'm really like and I think one thing that I was Jeramie: Learning, growing, thinking about next steps, life, ministry, schooling, seminary, all that. Like I'm really like and I think one thing that I was Allen: The next day I go and see the doctor, do all that. And I was actually watching our service from this past Sunday. Yep. And we sang on Jordan Stormy Banks. Yes. And you know, I am bound, I am bound for the promised land. Right. And so I was really just like, man, I'm bound for the promised land. And I was like, it just really encouraged my soul, surprisingly. I was like, dude, I just can't wait to be with Jesus. So it definitely made me long for Jesus, made me frustrated, made me confused, but then like trying to keep a positive outlook of like, you know what? God's gonna see me through this. Jeramie: The next day I go and see the doctor, do all that. Allen: He's gonna be faithful. Not gonna grow. So I think there's a level of like guarding against some discouragement and like trying to prepare the heart and the soul to like be ready to receive what God's gonna do through this. Because the natural temptation is gonna be, wow, this is this is poor me, pity me, this is frustrating. And so it even just I've been met with the, you know, compassion of people already who have heard about this and you know, like, hey, can I, you know, prepare to bring you a meal for you. Jeramie: He's gonna be faithful. Allen: Your surgery and just be praying for you and we hear for you. So yeah, I think that the church is carried to pec injuries increase appetite. So you need to bring him a lot of food. Yeah. But you know, it's it's really true. it it it's a every every time you face discouragement, whether it's an injury or whatever, is it's always a moment of where your faith is tested. 'Cause you know in your head that all things work together for good. But it's hard to see it sometimes with Jeramie: Your surgery and just be praying for you and we hear for you. But it's hard to see it sometimes with Allen: timing and how things stack up and and I I love too like you said it makes you long for heaven. You know the the one of the the benefit side benefits of suffering is that it it pops the bubble that that illusous illusory bubble that that this life is paradise or that this life is it or I'm living my best life. It's like no man, heaven is our home and we for keys have to be being reminded of that because it's by faith you don't see it. Yep. Jeramie: timing and how things stack up and and I I love too like you said it makes you long for heaven. Yep. Allen: Like Hebrews eleven, which is at the end of one of our readings. Yes, it is. Yeah, man. So, yeah, by faith. And it's just like God's gonna God's gonna grow thro grow me through this. So yeah. Maybe one last comment on that. Even is just like originally, I think when the injury first happened, and just even thinking now, there's a million s like what does this mean for the future? What does it mean for this? What does it mean for that? And it's just like you can start to spiral. Jeramie: Like Hebrews eleven, which is at the end of one of our readings. Yes, it is. Allen: Yeah, all the yeah, all the what ifs, what ifs. What ifs, what ifs, what ifs. Right. I think Korea Spasgros is really encouraging me. He's like, Man, like you gotta just hey, tomorrow has enough anxiety today has enough anxiety for itself. Yep. You know, that's Jesus' teaching in Matthew six. It's like, you know, don't be anxious about that. Your Lord God will provide. The Lord will provide. So That's right. Yeah. And I think like you said, y I like that line too where you said, The Lord's making a man out of me. And it's you know, he's specifically making a man of faith and a godly man. And part of Jeramie: Yeah, all the yeah, all the what ifs, what ifs. And part of Allen: There there's kind of like no shortcut to that except to go through trials to trust or not trust, but to see that God was faithful in the end. And those experiences repeated. That's why one of the things I love about being in a church with a lot of seasoned saints. Seasoned saints. Is that it is that I you can talk to them and they have been through so much in their lives and they'll always be like God is faithful. Yeah. That's why like the old saints, they'll sing great is thy faithfulness with tears on their cheeks. 'Cause they have like in their lives a hundred Jeramie: There there's kind of like no shortcut to that except to go through trials to trust or not trust, but to see that God was faithful in the end. 'Cause they have like in their lives a hundred Allen: you know, examples of how God was faithful. So that's great. Yep. One of the few benefits of getting old. It's not many really. That's right. You know what they say about getting old? You lose your eyesight, you lose your hearing, you lose your memory, but you gain weight. That's hilarious. All right. Isaiah Yeah, Isaiah. So this is gonna be Jeramie: you know, examples of how God was faithful. So that's great. Yep. One of the few benefits of getting old. It's not many really. That's right. You know what they say about getting old? You lose your eyesight, you lose your hearing, you lose your memory, but you gain weight. That's hilarious. All right. Isaiah Yeah, Isaiah. So this is gonna be Allen: 37 through 50. This is a big, you know, big chunk. I just want to apologize. I don't know if like the the saints in heaven can hear us or not. Yeah. But I if Isaiah can hear us, I just want apologize with what we're about to do with you. Because this is so majestic. And we're gonna like yeah, power through this in a few minutes. Yeah. You can take it up with him in heaven. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Anyway, just to be clear, I was not arguing for the fact. Jeramie: 37 through 50. Allen: Saints and Heming and Heroes. I'm just saying if that's true, if you apologize to Isaiah. Yeah, yeah. That's right. Yeah, it's such a b I mean, yeah. But anyway, kind of this is a transitional part of the book of Isaiah. And you really kind of get this historical transition. when you're he's talking about the first half is really devoted to judgment and the judgment that's ensuing and that's gonna come. And then the last part is focused on redemption, really those last, you know, kind of twenty six chapters, thirty nine, forty to sixty six. This is the promise of restoration. But what we happen is Jeramie: Saints and Heming and Heroes. This is the promise of restoration, but what we happen is Allen: Babylonian envoys, you know, kind of really taking over the Israelites, and then God promising, I'm gonna redeem and restore you. And that's what we see throughout the end. Yeah, starting in chapter 40, you have a major tonal shift from oracles of judgment, not exclusively. There are oracles of hope and restoration in one to thirty-nine, but the weight tends to be more like you said, Alan. Jeramie: Babylonian envoys, you know, kind of really taking over the Israelites, and then God promising, I'm gonna redeem and restore you. And that's what we see throughout the end. Yeah, starting in chapter 40, you have a major tonal shift from oracles of judgment, not exclusively. There are oracles of hope and restoration in one to thirty-nine, but the weight tends to be more like you said, Alan. Allen: judgment themes, whereas in chapters forty you have restoration, redemption, all the way to chapter sixty-six. And there's judgment there too. Yep. So so it's not one or the other. In fact, the the shift is so dramatic that more liberal and by liberal I'm not talking politics, but I mean like s scholars who tend not to believe the Bible is the inspired word of God. Right. have often argued that starting in chapter forty, you have a different author. Mm Jeramie: judgment themes, whereas in chapters forty you have restoration, redemption, all the way to chapter sixty-six. Mm Allen: In fact, they'll call them first Isaiah, second Isaiah. And some will even say, you know, there's another division later that they'll call third Isaiah, which you know, I I don't believe, but but it's it does speak to how noticeable this transition is. And you know, so so many beautiful things from Handel's Messiah. Yeah, you know, are sung from like chapter forty, Comfort my people, says the Lord, speak tenderly to Jerusalem. So, you know, after all of this difficulty in one through thirty-nine. Jeramie: In fact, they'll call them first Isaiah, second Isaiah. Allen: Just chapter four bursts out with like a trumpet call of comfort, my people. And that's that wonderful shift toward the the restoration themes that you find. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And on that restoration theme, God, I think what's just really cool when you're reading something like this in Isaiah, is just see what God says about Himself in what He's saying. He's like, I I I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel. Jeramie: Just chapter four bursts out with like a trumpet call of comfort, my people. Allen: There is no one like me through and through and through when he's calling people and reminding them of the way he's gonna restore, he's like, Before me, this is Isaiah 43, before me no God was formed, nor shall there be any after me. I, I am the Lord, and besides me there is no savior. I declared and saved and proclaimed when there was no strange God among you, and you are my witnesses, declared the Lord, and I am God. Like he is the one. Actually, even thirteen, and henceforth I am he. There is w none who can deliver from my hand. I work and who can turn it back? Jeramie: There is no one like me through and through and through when he's calling people and reminding them of the way he's gonna restore, he's like, Before me, this is Isaiah 43, before me no God was formed, nor shall there be any after me. Allen: Yeah. God is essentially saying, who can turn this back? I set out my purposes and I am utterly devoted to accomplishing them as Redeemer, which is just a huge theme throughout, which is like, man, God is great and He's faithful to His covenant, which we'll talk about a little bit in Hebrews. yeah, you know, interestingly, that same that theme pops up over and over in this section where God is the only God. He's the only one who can tell the end from the beginning and to make things happen. forty four verse six, I am the first and the last, which Jeramie: Yeah. He's the only one who can tell the end from the beginning and to make things happen. forty four verse six, I am the first and the last, which Allen: By the way, interestingly, when we get to Revelation, that's language that Jesus uses of himself. Yep. So this is very much Isaiah God language. Yeah. chapter 40, to your point is I I love, you know, verse 10 to the end of that chapter, you know, behold, this is beholding the God, who's marked out the waters in the hollow of his hand. You know, verse 15, the nations are like a drop in the bucket to him. Jeramie: By the way, interestingly, when we get to Revelation, that's language that Jesus uses of himself. Allen: Verse 18, to whom will you liken God? I mean, it's just the majesty of God is on display. Actually, you know, we just celebrated, celebrated, commemorated, remembered another nine eleven. And you know, that that was a Sunday when churches across America were full. My church was full on that Sunday. And and it's like, what do you preach? And so this is what I went to. Okay. Like I was like, the only thing people need today is the hugest picture of God they can get. Jeramie: Verse 18, to whom will you liken God? I mean, it's just the majesty of God is on display. Actually, you know, we just celebrated, celebrated, commemorated, remembered another nine eleven. Mm-hmm. And, you know, that that was a Sunday when churches across America were full. My church was full on that Sunday. And and it's like, what do you preach? And so this is what I went to. Okay. Like I was like, the only thing people need today is the hugest picture of God they can get. Allen: And Isaiah forty is one of those ones where it's almost like it takes us to the top of the spiritual Mount Everest to give us the closest view of of God's majesty in the heavens and how great he is. So, you know, if you're discouraged, scared, your faith is lagging, like this is a major faith hit is to go to Isaiah forty and just read. You know, th that's where you get, you know, have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God. Jeramie: And Isaiah forty is one of those ones where it's almost like it takes us to the top of the spiritual Mount Everest to give us the closest view of of God's majesty in the heavens and how great he is. So, you know, if you're discouraged, scared, your faith is lagging, like this is a major faith hit is to go to Isaiah forty and just read. You know, th that's where you get, you know, have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God. Allen: even ewes grow faint and weary, young men shall fall exhausted, but they who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up on wings like eagles. Man, that's good stuff. Yeah, amen. So much has been written from that. by the way, when you're reading this section, chapter 42 is very important. That's one of the one of the figures we start to see in this is the the servant. Yes. The Lord's servant who's gonna bring about this redemption. Yep. Yeah, so you get Jeramie: even ewes grow faint and weary, young men shall fall exhausted, but they who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. Yep. Yeah, so you get Allen: Well you're we're mentioning on is the the four servant songs in Isaiah, which we all see actually fulfilled in Christ. Yes. later on. But yeah, you see that in in forty two, you have a servant song and it and it reads like that, right? It reads like this poetic, you know, Hebrew poetry. Behold my servant. Mm-hmm. Behold my servant. The second servant song, I believe, is in chapter forty nine. That's right. so you so in our readings from this week, you you'll you'll have read two of those servant songs. So Jeramie: Well you're we're mentioning on is the the four servant songs in Isaiah, which we all see actually fulfilled in Christ. Yes. So Allen: Go back and just look at forty-two, one through is it six, no, nine, and then go back and look at chapter forty-nine, the beginning of that. And you'll see those, that's one through seven, and you'll see those two servant songs. Yeah. And then of course, next in next week's reading we'll get to fifty-three, which is the perhaps the most famous the suffering servant. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. What what encouragement does Jeramie: Go back and just look at forty-two, one through is it six, no, nine, and then go back and look at chapter forty-nine, the beginning of that. And you'll see those, that's one through seven, and you'll see those two servant songs. Yeah. And then of course, next in next week's reading we'll get to fifty-three, which is the perhaps the most famous the suffering servant. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. What what encouragement does Allen: Again, the kind of the theme as far as okay, judgment, yet restoration, God's faith. And it's this just absolutely massive view of God. You already mentioned the encouragement. If you feel like you're lagging in faith, just go look at this, see the beauty, the majesty, the worth of God. And how does, you know, this encourage our our church, people now? How does Isaiah's message of of judgment yet restoration encourage? Jeramie: Again, the kind of the theme as far as okay, judgment, yet restoration, God's faith. Allen: The soul just to to live life on a daily basis, even those who aren't lacking. Like what are we what is God calling us to? How is he calling us to respond to him? Yeah, I I think these these verses just call forth faith, especially as new covenant Christians, we are living in the fulfillment of Isaiah forty to sixty-six. Yep. The already not yet fulfillment. Yeah. So Isaiah 66 has 40 to 66 has already begun. It began with the first coming of Christ. It's being poured out today. Jeramie: The soul just to to live life on a daily basis, even those who aren't lacking. Allen: in the new covenant, but it it also has a greater and fuller fulfillment. So so you can see that the these are the things God is doing in the world. And and and so reading it through that lens. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, in and to kind of double down on that, just even forty-three, twenty-five, I I am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake and I will not remember your sins. In Christ, our sins are forgiven. God not Jeramie: in the new covenant, but it it also has a greater and fuller fulfillment. God not Allen: Holding our sins against us and we're completely free in Christ. He promised he would do it and then he actually did it in Christ. So I was just as I was reading through this was encouraging. isn't that cool too? He says, I'll blot out your sins for my own sake. Like why did he say for his like I understand like I'll blot out your sins for your sake. That's right, yeah. But for his sake, and it's because the thing that's ultimately motivating God to to pay for our sins through Christ and to save us is so that his own Jeramie: Holding our sins against us and we're completely free in Christ. He promised he would do it and then he actually did it in Christ. So I was just as I was reading through this was encouraging. isn't that cool too? He says, I'll blot out your sins for my own sake. Like why did he say for his like I understand like I'll blot out your sins for your sake. That's right, yeah. But for his sake, and it's because the thing that's ultimately motivating God to to pay for our sins through Christ and to save us is so that his own Allen: the glory of his grace and love might be manifested. So it's ultimately God's desire to express his glory and his goodness to us. So, which is really good because that means him forgiving my sins is not based upon something in me that has to earn it or merit it or attract it magnetically to me, but it's coming out of his own person, his own heart. Yeah. Amen. For his own sake. Amen. That's good. Is it flatlining to say that Jeramie: the glory of his grace and love might be manifested. Is it flatlining to say that Allen: God most glorifies himself by saving you. yeah. I mean, you know, I've I've been listening to biography of Ed Jonathan Edwards, John Marston's probably one of the best biographies in Edwards, and and that's one of Edwards' primary arguments is that that the thing God most wants to communicate to us is happiness. Not in the sense of like, you know. Jeramie: God most glorifies himself by saving you. Allen: I'm sitting on the beach with, you know, my drink and umbrella and I feel happy. But in the sense And you don't have to get pectoral surgery. That's right. Or like nothing goes wrong in your life. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But in other words, the the the thing that God wants to give us is Himself. Mm-hmm. And God is fundamentally happy because God is full of delight in Himself as the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit love one another. And so it's the overflow of the fullness of God's happiness and delight and love in God's self. Jeramie: I'm sitting on the beach with, you know, my drink and umbrella and I feel happy. Allen: That is ultimately what we get. Or, you know, as John Pepper likes to say, God is the gospel. That the ultimate thing God is giving us is Himself, which is happiness. Yeah. Amen. It's great. Yeah. Proverbs 25, 27. Yes. so much good stuff in Proverbs. Do you have any that popped for you? Yeah. One that really, really popped was Proverbs 26, Jeramie: That is ultimately what we get. Yeah. One that really, really popped was Proverbs 26, Allen: It he he goes through you know, this is Proverbs actually all about the fool. and so he describes what a fool is like, right? He says, Don't answer a cool a fool according to his folly. He's the one that like returns to his vomit, right? or he like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool that repeats his folly. But here's what really stuck out to me is the Proverbs is describing this type of fool man in verse twenty-four, whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart. Jeramie: It he he goes through you know, this is Proverbs actually all about the fool. and so he describes what a fool is like, right? He says, Don't answer a cool a fool according to his folly. He's the one that like returns to his vomit, right? or he like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool that repeats his folly. But here's what really stuck out to me is the Proverbs is describing this type of fool man in verse twenty-four, whoever hates disguises himself with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart. Allen: When he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart, though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. In other words, sin will find you out. You can speak you know, the fool, he'll speak flattery, he will disguise himself, speak these good things, but really there's abomination in heart and hatred, and amongst the assembly, amongst the people, it will be exposed. Jeramie: When he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart, though his hatred be covered with deception, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. In other words, sin will find you out. You can speak you know, the fool, he'll speak flattery, he will disguise himself, speak these good things, but really there's abomination in heart and hatred, and amongst the assembly, amongst the people, it will be exposed. Allen: in Romani, first Timothy five, twenty four, says the sins of some are conspicuous or obvious, preceding them to judgment, but others will be found out later. And so I was just thinking about, man, like sins will be found out. Like there is no hiding, either before God or before others in the in the collection, in the assembly of people. So I was just struck by like, man, like I need to be on guard. The truth always comes out. The truth always comes out. See, that just struck me especially of being being on guard, being on watch. Jeramie: in Romani, first Timothy five, twenty four, says the sins of some are conspicuous or obvious, preceding them to judgment, but others will be found out later. Allen: I you know, when I looked at s twenty-six, I was kind of you know, noodling on that same section. Twenty-six, seventeen to twenty-eight. I I read this and the th the thought that came to my mind was the fool loves drama. You know how there's just people who are like they're always in the middle of drama, creating it, dividing people, gossiping. It's like they like Jeramie: I you know, when I looked at s twenty-six, I was kind of you know, noodling on that same section. Twenty-six, seventeen to twenty-eight. I I read this and the th the thought that came to my mind was the fool loves drama. You know how there's just people who are like they're always in the middle of drama, creating it, dividing people, gossiping. It's like they like Allen: Thrive on the drama. Yeah. y you know, verse 17, whoever meddles in a coral not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears. the madman throws firebrands, arrows, and death, like a madman who does that is the one who deceives his neighbor then says, It's only joking. yeah. dude. Okay, wait, wait, wait. That that This is drama. Is drama in I you what the the modern contemporary term people place on that? What rage baiting. Jeramie: Thrive on the drama. Yeah. y you know, verse 17, whoever meddles in a coral not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears. the madman throws firebrands, arrows, and death, like a madman who does that is the one who deceives his neighbor then says, It's only joking. yeah. dude. Okay, wait, wait, wait. That that This is drama. Is drama in I you what the the modern contemporary term people place on that? What rage baiting. Allen: Rage baiting. Rage baiting is a sin. Yeah. Like I read that I was like, I literally wrote my book. That's rage baiting. When you just say things just to get people a that's what a rage baiting is, by the way, if you don't know what that is, it's the sin you just say things to to bait people into rage. Yeah. And I'm like, that is a sin. This is exactly what Proverbs is calling out in drama. twenty one, as charcoal to hot embers and wood to a fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. People who are just argumentative and like to stir the pot to create drama. Jeramie: Rage baiting. Rage baiting is a sin. Yeah. Like I read that I was like, I literally wrote my book. That's rage baiting. When you just say things just to get people a that's what a rage baiting is, by the way, if you don't know what that is, it's the sin you just say things to to bait people into rage. Yeah. People who are just argumentative and like to stir the pot to create drama. Allen: like you said, the person who disguises himself but has hatred in his heart, that's the drama person. Like you think they're nice and friendly, but they're like totally just you know, talking to you and then they're gonna take what they have from you and go to someone else. Yeah. but like you said, in the end the truth comes out. Verse 27, whoever digs a pit will fall into it. So I I don't know. I I was like, Man, the Proverbs just take life and and it get us down into the weeds of life. Like we all deal with this kind of Jeramie: like you said, the person who disguises himself but has hatred in his heart, that's the drama person. Like we all deal with this kind of Allen: Mm-hmm. and drama's probably too nice a word for it. I mean, it's really just like sinfully destructive relationship patterns. Yeah. But that's what, you know, he's he's warning against that. So yeah. I I just love I love Proverbs. By the way, you mentioned one earlier that I just want to go back and pick up. You mentioned 26 4, where it says, answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him. Then verse five says answer a fool to his folly, lest he be wise in his eyes. Yeah. Jeramie: Mm-hmm. and drama's probably too nice a word for it. I mean, it's really just like sinfully destructive relationship patterns. Yeah. But that's what, you know, he's he's warning against that. So yeah. I I just love I love Proverbs. Then verse five says answer a fool to his folly, lest he be wise in his eyes. Yeah. Allen: And I think that's part of the the wisdom of Proverbs is to is to realize that that sometimes you you speak and sometimes you don't. that that that that there's wisdom in knowing when's the right time to do the right thing. so that that I always found that as an interesting proverbs, but that's the nature of Proverbs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. When I read that I was like, this is directly contradictory. Yeah. And it's purposely put there it is to arrest us. Yeah. Jeramie: And I think that's part of the the wisdom of Proverbs is to is to realize that that sometimes you you speak and sometimes you don't. that that that that there's wisdom in knowing when's the right time to do the right thing. so that that I always found that as an interesting proverbs, but that's the nature of Proverbs. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. When I read that I was like, this is directly contradictory. Yeah. And it's purposely put there it is to arrest us. Yeah. Allen: This is a quick side note. We just, you know, we pre you preached through Ecclesiastes not that long ago. Yeah. But I just heard this. This was really helpful. So it's just a little more of a Bible reading thing for people listening. Proverbs and Ecclesiastes are doing a dance. Proverbs is like ideally for how things are ought to be. And then Ecclesiastes tells us how things really are. Yeah. And I like, that was just really helpful. They're doing a dance. It's like, well, they 'cause they seem a little bit contradictory in that same way, but it's just really speaking to you need both. And so in the wisdom of God, he's he's given us that. Jeramie: This is a quick side note. We just, you know, we pre you preached through Ecclesiastes not that long ago. Yeah. But I just heard this. This was really helpful. Allen: Yeah, pro Proverbs gives you the high level general principles and then Ecclesiastes reminds you about the exceptions and about you know the the way those principles sometimes don't work out in a fallen world. And so yeah, you're right. You need both the the conventional wisdom and the and the skepticism of of Ecclesiastes. Yeah. Luke twenty three, nearing the end of Luke. Yeah, near the end of Luke, near nearing the end of Jesus' ministry. Jeramie: Yeah, proverbs gives you the high level general principles and then Ecclesiastes reminds you about the exceptions and about you know the the way those principles sometimes don't work out in a fallen world. And so yeah, you're right. You need both the the conventional wisdom and the and the skepticism of of Ecclesiastes. Yeah. Luke twenty three, nearing the end of Luke. Yeah, near the end of Luke, near nearing the end of Jesus' ministry. Allen: And and again, here we get to the you know, the the sweet, bitter part of the story of Christ's suffering. I I feel like one of the major themes of this section that we read last week is the innocence of Christ. You know, Pilate says to the chief priest in the crowds, verse four I find no guilt with this man. He sends him to Herod, Herod Jeramie: And and again, here we get to the you know, the the sweet, bitter part of the story of Christ's suffering. I I feel like one of the major themes of this section that we read last week is the innocence of Christ. You know, Pilate says to the chief priest in the crowds, verse four I find no guilt with this man. He sends him to Herod, Herod Allen: Just mocks him but doesn't accuse him of anything. So Pilate says in verse 14, You brought me this man as misleading the people and examining before he. Behold, I did not find this man guilty of any of the charges, neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Does that excuse them of their responsibility in the crucifixion of Christ? But of course not. I mean, it in fact it makes it worse. Yeah. Because it's like you know he's innocent. And you still it's a it's an even Jeramie: Just mocks him but doesn't accuse him of anything. And you still it's a it's an even Allen: Aggravated miscarriage of justice on the part of Pilate and Herod. Yeah. you know it yeah. And then, you know, the two thieves on the cross. one of them says, you know, we indeed justly are being condemned, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. And then finally, when Jesus finally dies, the centurion says, Certainly this man was innocent. Yeah. Jeramie: Aggravated miscarriage of justice on the part of Pilate and Herod. Yeah. you know it yeah. And then, you know, the two thieves on the cross. one of them says, you know, we indeed justly are being condemned, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. And then finally, when Jesus finally dies, the centurion says, Certainly this man was innocent. Yeah. Allen: And so chapter twenty three, that that's one of the major threads is the innocence of Christ. He's the spotless Lamb of God without blemish or spot, who who the sinless one who bears the sins of others. If he if he was a sinner, then he couldn't have bore our sins because he'd have been suffering for his own sins. Yeah. Amen. That's so good. You know, infamously, we love the story of, you know, the criminal on the cross. Yeah. Right? Yeah. Thief on the cross, man. Thief on the cross. Jeramie: And so chapter twenty three, that that's one of the major threads is the innocence of Christ. He's the spotless Lamb of God without blemish or spot, who who the sinless one who bears the sins of others. You know, infamously, we love the story of, you know, the criminal on the cross. Yeah. Right? Yeah. Thief on the cross, man. Thief on the cross. Allen: In verse two forty two and forty-three. And he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. And he said to him, Truly I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise. Man, does that not speak to the nature of salvation by faith alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone? I mean, just on this cross, recognizing, as you said, the innocence of Christ. This man is who he says he is. He is innocent. He is the only one. Jeramie: In verse two forty two and forty-three. Allen: Who could be sufficient to pay for the sins of the world? And he says, Jesus, remember me. And he says, Your faith has saved you. You will be with me in paradise. So just such a sweet, sweet. I love when he says, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. What a strange thing to say from another person who's literally nailed to a cross and is gonna die on that cross. Yeah. Like w what kingdom are you possibly talking about? Like that that was faith to believe that Jeramie: Who could be sufficient to pay for the sins of the world? And he says, Jesus, remember me. And he says, Your faith has saved you. You will be with me in paradise. So just such a sweet, sweet. I love when he says, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. What a strange thing to say from another person who's literally nailed to a cross and is gonna die on that cross. Yeah. Like w what kingdom are you possibly talking about? Like that that was faith to believe that Allen: I mean, you that's the eyes of faith. It's to see that this really is the Messiah and that even this cross cannot keep him from receiving his kingdom and and him saying, I want to be with this guy, not with those guys. Amen. Man, that's making me long for heaven, long for Jesus, man. Yeah. And yeah. By the way, if you haven't seen it, it's a famous clip, but there's a famous sermon by Alistair Begg where he it's I think it's called the the guy The Man on the Middle Cross. The man in the middle cross. And Jeramie: I mean, you that's the eyes of faith. And Allen: There's I won't spoil it for you, but f you can find it on YouTube. Yeah. Like what it's it's this thing where Alistair Biggs' standing there preaching and there's like a crowd of guys around him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's really weird. I don't know if it's like some Scottish like I don't know sermon throwdown or something. But like it's great. And and his line about Jeramie: There's I won't spoil it for you, but f you can find it on YouTube. Yeah. Like what it's it's this thing where Alistair Biggs' standing there preaching and there's like a crowd of guys around him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's really weird. I don't know if it's like some Scottish like I don't know sermon throwdown or something. But like it's great. And and his line about Allen: About that guy on the cross is so good. So I won't spoil it, but go listen to that. Yeah, just look up the man on the middle cross, Aleister Beg, it'll pop right up. It'll probably just pop up like the three minute clip. Yeah, the three minute, just let's watch it. Just the three minute clip. And the word the filming is like dated, so it'll look a little old. Yeah. But it's worth every single second and you'll just weep. You'll weep uncontrollably. At least that's what I did. I was like, no, I was weeping. Or if you in fact you'll you'll weep so hard you might blow your peck out. Jeramie: About that guy on the cross is so good. So I won't spoil it, but go listen to that. Yeah, just look up the man on the middle cross, Aleister Beg, it'll pop right up. It'll probably just pop up like the three minute clip. Yeah, the three minute, just let's watch it. This is how men deal with emotions. Yeah, that's right. That's right. Finally, last but not least, the towering heights of Hebrews. Yeah. Again, I want to apologize to the heavens, if anyone's listening, yeah, to whoever wrote Hebrews, but we don't know who wrote it. Yeah, that's right. do you think this was the sermon? by the way, this is one of the things that That's what he calls it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Jeramie: And then you'll vomit uncontrollably. Allen: It's really called Yeah, an oratory the oratory nature of this was preached as a sermon. And it feels like that. if you're reading, I don't know if you've if you guys have picked that up or not, but it feels like a sermon. So well he says in chapter, I mean, just jumping ahead, but the chapter 13, verse 22, I appeal to you, brothers, bear with my word of exhortation, for I have written to you briefly. I wonder what a lengthy exhortation would be like from this. Yeah, that's that's great. Jeramie: It's really called Yeah, an oratory the oratory nature of this was preached as a sermon. And it feels like that. if you're reading, I don't know if you've if you guys have picked that up or not, but it feels like a sermon. I wonder what a lengthy exhortation would be like from this. Yeah, that's that's great. Allen: Yeah, but it's a word of exhortation. So it really is it is kind of sermonic material. Yeah. Yeah. yeah, so chapter nine, well, chapter eight is a very critical chapter because the the writer of Hebrews identifies Christ as the one who brings the new covenant, and he quotes in chapter eight Jeremiah thirty one, thirty one to thirty three, as as in other words, in Christ the old covenant promises of a new covenant are fulfilled. Jeramie: Yeah, but it's a word of exhortation. Allen: And the the characteristics of the new covenant in Christ, which is different. So the old covenant would be the Mo the Moses covenant. And we're not under the Moses covenant anymore. We're under the new covenant in Christ. Here's the the three things that are at least in this text different from the old Moses covenant. number one, I'll put my law in your minds, write them on your heart. So it's not gonna be on stone tablets. It's actually gonna be, and that's really the work of the Holy Spirit giving us a new heart. So we would call that the doctrine of regeneration. number two. Jeramie: And the the characteristics of the new covenant in Christ, which is different. So we would call that the doctrine of regeneration. number two. Allen: is their relationship with God, I'll be their God, they'll shall be my people. They shall not teach each one his neighbor, saying, Know the Lord, for they'll all know me. So everyone in the new covenant will have a new heart, they will have an intimacy with God. and then number three, I'll remember their sins no more. So the forgiveness of sins. So so this is why the the signs that that the new covenant is for people who are forgiven and who've been born again. Jeramie: is their relationship with God, I'll be their God, they'll shall be my people. Allen: And which is one of the reasons, by the way. you know, I personally believe that baptism is for disciples of Jesus. It's for born again Christians, it's not for their children. Right. Because baptism is the sign of the new covenant. Yep. And to be in the new covenant, you have to have a new heart, you have to have your sins forgiven, and you have to know the Lord. And that's not true automatically of the children of believers. So that's why we don't baptize infants. Jeramie: And which is one of the reasons, by the way. you know, I personally believe that baptism is for disciples of Jesus. It's for born again Christians, it's not for their children. Right. Allen: and this is where I would I would take you know, issue with my brothers and sisters whom I love and who will be with me in heaven, who who do baptize infants. But that's why. It's because the nature of the new covenant is distinct in those ways from the nature of the old covenant. That's right. That's right. Yeah, and and I think even just kind of you're you're making the you know, the point that it's f disciples, those who have their sins have been forgiven, they're in Christ. And we see this just in verse twenty four. Jeramie: and this is where I would I would take you know, issue with my brothers and sisters whom I love and who will be with me in heaven, who who do baptize infants. Allen: For Christ has entered not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf, nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with the blood that not his own, for then he would have to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all, for all at the end of the ages, to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And then chapter ten would go on to talk about Christ's sacrifice once for all. Jeramie: For Christ has entered not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf, nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with the blood that not his own, for then he would have to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all, for all at the end of the ages, to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And then chapter ten would go on to talk about Christ's sacrifice once for all. Allen: So it's this one time eternal sacrifice doing away right with the old covenant sacrificial system through this one man's blood, through Jesus Christ's blood, that we all are entered. And it's, you know, our union with Christ, seeing this in baptism, that we are now in this union and the once for all sacrifice in Christ and are devoted to him and have our sins forgiven. So yeah. And and really the once for all sacrifice speaks to the e efficacy or in other words, effectiveness of Christ's death. Mm-hmm. Jeramie: So it's this one time eternal sacrifice doing away right with the old covenant sacrificial system through this one man's blood, through Jesus Christ's blood, that we all are entered. Allen: Because that the argument of the writer of Hebrews is that that in the old covenant they had to keep sacrificing animals because those animals' bloods couldn't actually take away sin. Yeah. But when Christ gave his life, it was once for all, and there's no more need for that sacrifice to be made or for any sacrifice to be made. And so we can rest in the the f what we often call the finished work of Christ. Amen. It is finished. And so that also means so you know. Jeramie: Because that the argument of the writer of Hebrews is that that in the old covenant they had to keep sacrificing animals because those animals' bloods couldn't actually take away sin. Yeah. Allen: The new covenant has impacts for how we think about baptism. This has impacts for how we think about the Lord's Supper. Because that means that the Lord's Supper is is a remembrance and and a by faith appreciation of the once for all sacrifice of Christ. It's not, it's not a representation of the sacrifice. that this is why you know, we, you know, we take issue with the Roman Catholic teaching of transubstantiation, that that the body and Jeramie: The new covenant has impacts for how we think about baptism. It's not, it's not a representation of the sacrifice. that this is why you know, we, you know, we take issue with the Roman Catholic teaching of transubstantiation, that that the body and Allen: That the elements literally become the body and blood of Christ. Right. bec it w with the idea there being that the sacrifice has to be represented. Man, it's w it's it's done. It's finished. It doesn't have to be represented. It's it's been made and it's done. And so we can rest in the finished work of Christ. And that's just really good, not just for thinking through theology of like baptism in the Lord's Supper or whatever, but it's just good for when you when you come face to face yet again. Mm-hmm. Jeramie: That the elements literally become the body and blood of Christ. Right. bec it w with the idea there being that the sacrifice has to be represented. Man, it's w it's it's done. Allen: With the ugliness of your sin. Yep. And you just, you know, you think like, Man, I'm doing great in the Christian life. And then you like, whoops, there I did I go again. Like back to my old self. Yeah. Like certainly, like, there's gotta be something more I have to do. And it's like, no, once for all, Christ paid for that sin. And now it by grace I can repent and move ahead by faith. Yeah. Amen. And the author of Hebrews wants us to know that and have that. And Jeramie: With the ugliness of your sin. Yep. And you just, you know, you think like, Man, I'm doing great in the Christian life. And then you like, whoops, there I did I go again. Like back to my old self. Yeah. And the author of Hebrews wants us to know that and have that. And Allen: You know, after he lays out that argument that you just mentioned in verse nineteen through twenty-five, really bit of a chunk of text, but therefore, brothers, you know, what's the therefore, therefore, right, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh. And since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart and full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience. Jeramie: You know, after he lays out that argument that you just mentioned in verse nineteen through twenty-five, really bit of a chunk of text, but therefore, brothers, you know, what's the therefore, therefore, right, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh. Allen: And our bodies washed with pure water. We can go straight to Christ. Straight to Jesus. We have full assurance, not because we're something special, but because he has finished the work. That's right. And we can go into his presence. We we don't need a priest to mediate the way for us. We don't need a priest and a confessional to to absolve us. We have our priest. It's Jesus whose blood has been shed and we go directly to him. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Amen. and then he says, Let's hold fast to our confession. Mm-hmm. Jeramie: And our bodies washed with pure water. Don't don't shift away from this doctrine. and then verses twenty-four and twenty-five, as part of this, let us consider how to stir one another to up to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the day approaching. One of the ways we live out Jeramie: Because Jesus who who promised is faithful. He's faithful. Yeah. So keep trusting Jesus. Don't don't shift away from this doctrine. and then verses twenty-four and twenty-five, as part of this, let us consider how to stir one another to up to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the day approaching. One of the ways we live out Allen: this this true worship is by continuing to gather with the church. This is why it's so important for Christians to gather you know, weekly as y you know, in a local church, you know, even on vacation, like, man, find find find ways to gather with the saints. You you need it, I need it. We all need to be spurred on toward love and good works and to hold on to these truths because the world's always trying to erode yeah. You know, our faith and our walk. Yeah. Jeramie: this this true worship is by continuing to gather with the church. Yeah. Allen: Great. and chapter 11. We start chapter 11. Let's just put that on pause till next week. What do think? There's so much there. This this is called infamously the Hall of Faith. The Hall of Faith. The Hall of Faith. And so yeah. so yeah, we'll hit chapter 11 next week. Here's the conclusion, I think, of that Hebrews 10 section that we've talked a lot about in 39, but we are not of those. So essentially after this, he goes, There's full confidence, and then he he lays out some warning passages. He says, Don't stray from what you've heard, what you've believed, keep trusting Christ. Jeramie: Great. and chapter 11. We start chapter 11. Let's just put that on pause till next week. What do think? There's so much there. This this is called infamously the Hall of Faith. Allen: You know, don't throw away your confidence, right? But and then he warns, but then he says, But we're not like that. Why? Because we are of those who have faith and preserve their souls because we have faith in this Christ. So faith in Christ is the conclusion of that section where it's like you don't have to, you know, shrink back, have full assurance. If you're resting in the finished work of Christ, you can have that confidence. Yeah, that's right. And Paul, I said Paul. Paul. Whoever wrote this. could have been Paul. Jeramie: You know, don't throw away your confidence, right? But and then he warns, but then he says, But we're not like that. Why? Allen: Could have been. but you know, the author's not named. y yeah, so he it's interesting that he warns in chapter ten, don't fall away. But then, but then he says at the end of it, but we're not those who shrink back, you know, or as he says in chapter four, like, I have confidence of better things for you, things keeping of salvation. Or rather, chapter six, things keeping with salvation. So so he warns us against falling away, but he also assumes, I think. Jeramie: Could have been. but you know, the author's not named. y yeah, so he it's interesting that he warns in chapter ten, don't fall away. Allen: the way I understand that that seeming tension is that those who truly are saved will respond to the warning passages by faith. Yep. So so that the warning passages are a way of revealing who truly is is saved. and and the warning passages are true. Mm-hmm. but yeah. So really good stuff. I feel like that was a lot. Wow. There's a lot of there's a lot in the Bible. A lot of theology, a lot of truth, a lot of heart touching doctrine. Jeramie: the way I understand that that seeming tension is that those who truly are saved will respond to the warning passages by faith. Yep. It's so good. Yeah. Any concluding thoughts? Man, we'll be praying for you if you're upcoming surgery. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Just pray that, you know, I would see God through this in this quick recovery and yeah, just I don't know what he's gonna do through it, but I'm trying to prepare my heart for looking for him. 'Cause what I have felt, this is not my first surgery. I've done surgeries, I've had surgeries Jeramie: It's lovely. Yeah. It is great. The Bible is really good that way. Yeah. It's so good. Yeah. And it's the the temptation is to overlook what God is doing and just be frustrated about the situation. So just pray that I would see what God is doing so I wouldn't miss him. That's a good word, man. Yeah. Great. This has been another episode of the SC C Saver Podcast. We're savoring God through every bite of scripture. We are on Apple podcast, YouTube and Spotify.
