And I feel like I've been crashing, crashing kind of ⁓ like I've been on an adrenaline high. I've just like survival mode, fight mode, like fight for my family, fight for the church and just like my schedule and time. And now things are kind of normalizing. But my heart and brain don't don't quite feel normal. Teddy: Well, as all you brothers and sisters now and you know, ⁓ you know, we've just been coming off the heels of of Allie's cancer treatments wrapping up. And I feel like I've been crashing, crashing kind of ⁓ like I've been on an adrenaline high of just like survival mode, fight mode, like fight for my family, fight for the church and just like my schedule and time. And so, just taking my emotions and feelings and giving them to the Lord, trusting Him, and then also conversely bringing them to my wife when I'm like, I don't know how I'm feeling. Yep. So this summer, I'd say two goals. One, I just got to I got I got to sit on on the missions committee the last like six months with Kurt Schulte and the crew. But then, you know, life circumstances, I kind of got thrown out of that for a while just with with my head being in our medical trials. But I'm excited to dive back in. Teddy: kind of transitional season for your life that you're looking forward to upcoming now that you're kind of a little bit more normalizing. Yep. So this summer, I'd say two goals. We're gonna look at Psalms 95 through 100 We'll look at Mark's gospel from 933 to 1126 and then 2nd Corinthians the first five chapters of 2nd Corinthians So we're gonna hop right in and in first Samuel. For all you out there, I love First Samuel, First and Second Samuel, some of my favorite books, because fun fact about me, I love fantasy genre, fantasy novels. Teddy: Samuel. Well, you know, funny enough, it's that this isn't the first time King comes up in Deuteronomy. Let's see what chapter is it? Deuteronomy 17. And he's giving the laws. He gives Moses laws concerning the king. He said, you know what? One day the people are going to ask for a king. I don't know if that's just like human nature or natural or what, but they're going to want a king like the nations around them. Yeah. Right. Teddy: You're asking me. So Dagon's one of their gods, right? They've got a statue of him. yep, idolatrous gods. And when the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, you know, they're all stoked about their victory. ⁓ Behold, Dagon had fallen on his face downward on the ground before the Ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and put him back up in place. They're like, ⁓ that's weird. Like, the statue of our god fell down before the Ark. Weird. Allen Smith: But when they rose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the Ark of the Lord and the head of Dagon, and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. Only the trunk of Dagon was left before him. This is why the priests of Dagon and all who enter the house of Dagon do not tread on the threshold of Dagon and ashton to this day. Like, dude, the power of the Lord and just that... Teddy: But when they rose early the next morning, behold, Dagon had fallen face downward on the ground before the Ark of the Lord and the head of Dagon, and both his hands were lying cut off on the threshold. But what's highlighted here is that these Psalms are about the King of the whole earth, not just the King of God's people, not just the King of Israel. so these Psalms are, know, Psalm 76, ⁓ 96 verse 1, ⁓ sing to the Lord our new song, sing to the Lord all the earth. And so if you reread these Psalms and look for Allen Smith: who is asking, who the author is asking to praise the Lord, he's asking for the nations to praise the Lord. He's asking for the whole earth to praise the Lord. And it's just that even here in the middle of Old Testament, we see God's heart, not just for Israel to praise him, but for all the peoples to praise him. He's worthy of the praise of the entire world, not just the Israelites. And that's what we're doing in our missions program at SEC, right? Piper famously said, Teddy: who is asking, who the author is asking to praise the Lord, he's asking for the nations to praise the Lord. He's asking for the whole earth to praise the Lord. And it's just that even here in the middle of Old Testament, we see God's heart, not just for Israel to praise him, but for all the peoples to praise him. He's worthy of the praise of the entire world, not just the Israelites. And that's what we're doing in our missions program at SEC, right? Piper famously said, Allen Smith: missions exist because worship doesn't. And so we're giving our money, giving our labors so that we see the people's praise him. that's great. Yeah, I'm going to read kind of a couple of different verses through these various Psalms and I'm going to bite down a little bit on a hundred here. But 95.1, ⁓ come, let us sing to the Lord, let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Why? Because the Lord is our salvation. He made the seas. Teddy: missions exist because worship doesn't. And so we're giving our money, giving our labors so that we see the people's praise him. that's great. Yeah, I'm going to read kind of a couple of different verses through these various Psalms and I'm going to bite down a little bit on a hundred here. But 95.1, ⁓ come, let us sing to the Lord. Teddy: 96.1, ⁓ sing to the Lord a new song, sing to the Lord all the earth, sing to the Lord bless his name, tell of his salvation from day to day, declares glory among the nations, his marvelous works among the peoples. So righteous God Yahweh the Lord upholds righteousness and justice and he will be exalted for his righteousness and justice. And then 98 again sing the Lord a new song. He's made known his salvation. He's revealed righteousness. And then 100 I want to talk about this a little bit because when I was reading this Teddy: with equity and then 97 to talks about how righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Right. So righteous God Yahweh the Lord upholds righteousness and justice and he will be exalted for his righteousness and justice. And then 98 again sing the Lord a new song. He's made known his salvation. He's revealed righteousness. And then 100 I want to talk about this a little bit because when I was reading this Allen Smith: It's such a simple Psalm. It just talks about the actual, the title of it that's given in my Bible is a Psalm forgiving. Thanks. Just make a joyful noise. Know that He's God. Enter His gate with thanksgiving. He's good. His steadfast love endures forever. And as I was reading that, I was really reflecting. I don't know if this is a practice in your guy's life or not. If it's not, I highly commend and encourage you to do this. But have my journal with me as I'm my Bible. And I'm like, man, anytime that I'm feeling maybe down, Teddy: It's such a simple psalm. It just talks about the actual, the title of it that's given in my Bible is a psalm forgiving thanks. Just make a joyful noise. Know that He's God. Enter His gate with thanksgiving. He's good. His stuff best love and doors forever. And as I was reading that, I was really reflecting. ⁓ I don't know if this is a practice in your guy's life or not. If it's not, I highly commend and encourage you to do this. But have my journal with me as I'm reading my Bible. And I'm like, man, anytime that I'm feeling maybe down, Allen Smith: Or feeling like things are just going wrong My perspective needs to shift and Psalm 100 gives that perspective shift to give thanks And so just took my journal and I wrote down I just at the time 17 different things I was thankful for I'm like man, and I can look back at this now I wrote this a couple days ago I can give thanks the Lord for these 17 things and I could write all day writing about things. So yeah, it was just good Where am I on that list of thanks thankful things? Let's see ooh 18 Teddy: Or feeling like things are just going wrong My perspective needs to shift and Psalm 100 gives that perspective shift to give thanks And so just took my journal and I wrote down I just at the time 17 different things I was thankful for I'm like man, and I can look back at this now I wrote this a couple days ago I can give thanks the Lord for these 17 things and I could write all day writing about things. So yeah, it was just good Where am I on that list of thanks thankful things? Let's see ooh 18 Allen Smith: Well, okay. Well, no, no, no. Well, one actually wants as a job to says a job in ministry. And so ministry is with you. Let's go in with the brothers and the sisters. And so number one, really, you guys are what makes this job so great. There go. So great. ⁓ number eight pastors to have on there. So, dude, you're in there like four times, bro. ⁓ So, yeah, just give thanks to the Lord. Maybe maybe try that if you haven't. Teddy: Well, okay. Yeah, that's great. We're going to go to the New Testament and we're going to go look at the Gospel of Mark here. So the Gospel of Mark as we've been reading, it's a great Gospel, all of them are, but just one little actually kind of an interpretive thing, which I think a lot of Christians miss sometimes, just a random little Bible reading fact. The four Gospels really serve as one unit. Teddy: when you're feeling at the end of the day, beginning of day, go to Psalm 100, give thanks to Lord, write some things down you're thankful for it and praise Him for it and say thank you, thank you Lord. Yeah, that's great. We're going to go to the New Testament and we're going to go look at the Gospel of Mark here. So the Gospel of Mark as we've been reading, it's a great Gospel, all of them are, but just one little actually kind of an interpretive thing, which I think a lot of Christians miss sometimes, just a random little Bible reading fact. Allen Smith: because it's like a picture frame ⁓ or a window, stained glass window that like shines different lights through it depending on how the sun hits it and that's what each of the gospels does. It shines a little bit differently about the character of Jesus, the person and work of Jesus, but it's still one picture, one window that's supposed to highlight the worth and glory and majesty ⁓ of Jesus. And so that's what we get in the gospel. And really this section, ⁓ it's kind of this conflict dialogue where Jesus speaks to the challenging tension between material possessions and entry into God's kingdom. So what are some of these lessons that Jesus gives Teddy ⁓ in discipleship of what it actually means to be a follower of Christ? Yeah, we're just seeing that it's it's there's a cost to discipleship, right? Yeah, there ain't much health, wealth and prosperity gospel in Mark nine. Yeah, that's right. ⁓ You know, temptations to sin verse starting verse forty two. And ⁓ it's it's just that it's he's he's not just speaking like Allen Smith: He's not just speaking like in a perfunctory way that he's like, it's literally better for you to go into heaven maimed than to go to hell intact. Yeah. Right. And that's what these sins will do to you. Like if if if your eye causes you to lust, you better like I heard John Piper shout out again. He preached this. He said it's better for you to take a screwdriver and and tear your own eye off. You know, if that's causing you then then go to hell. Teddy: in a perfunctory way that he's like, it's literally better for you to go into heaven maimed than to go to hell intact. Yeah. Right. And that's what these sins will do to you. Like if if if your eye causes you to lust, you better like I heard John Piper shout out again. He preached this. said it's better for you to take a screwdriver and and tear your own eye off. You know, if that's causing you then then go to hell because of your sin. Yeah. Allen Smith: because of your sin. Yeah, that's it's supposed to be utterly graphic and vulgar. And we don't and we don't fight them when it's convenient or we don't just like take the easy path. But we make war on our sin. Yeah, that's great. Jesus does has teaches a little bit about kind of marriage. And we talked about a little bit in First Corinthians, so we're not going to Teddy: It's supposed to be utterly graphic and vulgar. It's supposed to be like, whoa! There's a whoa factor to this. But it's just that disciples of Christ, right, we fight our sins. Yeah. He curses a fig tree, he cleanses the temple, and then he gives a lesson about this fig tree. essentially his message is that you all have missed the message, you're not bearing fruit, and the Teddy: is about service, is about love, it's about giving of yourself. Not about accumulating. Yeah, that's great. And then the last little section there is the transition into the triumphal entry, which you all know it, right? Because people are accusing him of the suffering he's going through. And his sharp rejection ⁓ is his defense for why he experienced affliction. And this is sobering right here. Teddy: And this is one of his letters to the Corinthians. And he praises them for the God of all comfort. And in this book, he's kind of defending his ministry. He said under the old covenant, the Mosaic law, they could not be righteous, meaning they could not obey the law perfectly. It condemned them. showed where they had fallen short. But now under the new covenant inaugurated by Christ, life, death and resurrection and the giving of the Holy Spirit now in believers, believers are now credited as righteous because of Christ's atoning work. Teddy: this section here, Paul talks about how great of a greater ministry here he has in the New Covenant. We behold the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus. Teddy: the cross and now they have a greater ministry. They have ministry of the Spirit, not of the letter that kills, but now of the Holy Spirit. He talks about where the Lord is Spirit and where the Spirit of Lord is, there is freedom.
