Why are we even recording? I don't think it's ever a idea to revisit this stuff. Yeah, that's good. Forget, remember why we're doing this. ⁓ And ultimately, it's because we want to savor God. We want to know God.

Jeramie: and we know Him through His Word, and it also then has a transformative effect upon us that the Lord transforms our hearts through His Word. Yeah. So, Lamancio, transforming hearts through the Word. You've been not only just a student of the Word, just being a Christian, because Christians are students of the Word. Let's jump in with this new book, Numbers. We got out of Leviticus. We learned a lot about tabernacle and cleanliness laws.

Allen: through five chapter 11. we're going to jump in in verse 11. Verse 11. Yeah. I was like, wow. You said chapter 11. I was like, you are ambitious. We're not covering 11 chapters. Alan just reads scripture. Yeah, that's That's all I do. Yeah. Let's jump in with this new book, Numbers. ⁓ We got out of Leviticus. We learned a lot about tabernacle and cleanliness laws. And now we're going to get into a little bit more of the story of the people, the people of Israel, arrangements, ⁓ censuses, a bunch of numbers. As you could imagine, the book is called Numbers and it lives up to its name. But there's a bunch of numbers in it. Jeremy, why don't you jump in, talk a little bit about numbers. What should, just at a high level, what should we be listening for? What should we be looking for? And what's the significance and the contribution of this book?

Jeramie: And now we're going to get into a little bit more of the story of the people, the people of Israel, arrangements, ⁓ censuses, a bunch of numbers. As you could imagine, the book is called Numbers and it lives up to its name. But there's a bunch of numbers in it. Jeremy, why don't you jump in, talk a little bit about numbers. Allen: Yeah, so this book now is transitioning us from ⁓ Mount Sinai to the Promised Land. And as we're going to see that, you know, something happens, and it's actually at the end of our readings today, which is pretty bad. ⁓ But it also gives us more instruction just on, you know, the numbers of the people, the ordering of the people. In our reading, we got a lot in the Levites. Yeah, we did. Yeah, so, yeah, as you mentioned, this book,

So it's order, it's a multiplication of leadership.

Allen: And here's another reference to elders. know, elders is part of God's plan, Old Testament and New Testament. But then the big moment, at least in our reading, is chapters 13 and 14, where they get to the promised land and they send in the twelve spies to scout out the land. And these guys come back, the land of Cana, and ten of them are like, we can't do this.

And then there's just two guys, Joshua and Caleb, who are like, hey, God told us we can take the land, so let's take the land. Let's trust His word. Yeah, it says in 13 verse 30, but Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are able to overcome it. Then the men who had gone up with him said, we are not able to go.

Allen: The Canaanites are too big, their walls are too high, the people are too tough. Allen: But it wasn't about their military strength, it was about the promises of God. And Joshua says that ⁓ in 148. It's kind of a mic drop moment for him. says, the Lord is pleased with us, He will bring us into this land, a land flowing with milk and honey and give it to us. Only don't rebel against the Lord and don't be afraid of the people of the land, for we will devour them. Their protection has been removed from them and the Lord is with us. Don't be afraid of them. But we know the story, the people rebelled. ⁓

Jeramie: But it wasn't about their military strength, it was about the promises of God. And Joshua says that ⁓ in 148. Allen: And so God's like, you're not going in. He says, you're going back into the wilderness. You guys are all going to die in the wilderness. And what's crazy is then the people are like, okay, sorry, we're going in. We're going in. At the end of chapter 14, God's like, don't go in. Now I'm not with you, so now you can't. And then they get routed. So it's like when God says go, they don't go. When God says don't go, they go. It reminds me of myself a little bit.

Jeramie: And so God's like, you're not going in. He says, you're going back into the wilderness. You guys are all going to die in the wilderness. And what's crazy is then the people are like, okay, sorry, we're going in. We're going in. At the end of chapter 14, God's like, don't go in. Now I'm not with you, so now you can't. And then they get routed. So it's like when God says go, they don't go. When God says don't go, they go. It reminds me of myself a little bit.

Allen: Think it's I think what's funny. I was making this argument yesterday in Sunday school ⁓ We assume we read ourselves into the stories as the heroes it's like well We would have been like Joshua and Caleb the reality is No, we would have been like the Israelites were like, ⁓ what are we doing here? You guys are dumb Yeah, so I just think it reminds us of like hey we are people that continually forget God forget God's promises and yet he

Yeah, there's punishment disobedience, but ultimately we know that the punishment has already been placed onto his son and that it goes to show our need for Jesus Christ even more. Psalms, Psalm 51 is a Psalm you should, if you're listening to this, you should just kind of note this. This is a powerful Psalm of repentance.

Allen: Do not banish me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore the joy of your salvation and sustain me by giving me a willing spirit." I mean, it's just great words for when you become face to face with your sin, and this scripture really gives you the words to be brutally honest with God, both about your sin and your hope that He is a gracious and forgiving God. Yeah. I think that, you know, this Psalm actually changed my Christian life.

I mean, it's just great words for when you become face to face with your sin, and this scripture really gives you the words to be brutally honest with God, both about your sin and your hope that He is a gracious and forgiving God. Allen: a few years ago because that verse 12 that you just read restored to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. David's problem was not based on like his desires. It was based on his failure to remember God's salvation. He forgot God.

Allen: the Lord and I just think about that in my own life. It's like man, I just got to remember remember what God did for me. Is that saying that there literally is not a single person on the planet who does good? I think what it's saying is that apart from God's grace, yes.

Jeramie: these harsh words, the fool says in his heart, there is no God, they're corrupt, doing abominable iniquity, there is a none who does good, God looks down from heaven on the children of man to see if there's any who understand, who seek after God, they've fallen away, together they become ripped, there's no one who does good, not even one. Is that saying that there literally is not a single person on the planet who does good? I think what it's saying is that apart from God's grace, yes. ⁓

Allen: that there's no one who can please God ⁓ based upon their works, that in our hearts we are depraved and that depravity touches all aspects of our being. And in fact, as we're going to see, actually in a few moments here, we're going to talk about Romans, which we started reading. Paul quotes this as his evidence and argument that no one is righteous enough for God. So when we say no one does good deeds,

Jeramie: that there's no one who can please God ⁓ based upon their works, that in our hearts we are depraved and that depravity touches all aspects of our being. And in fact, as we're going to see, actually in a few moments here, we're going to talk about Romans, which we started reading. Paul quotes this as his evidence and argument that no one is righteous enough for God. So when we say no one does good deeds,

Allen: what we mean is there's no deeds that are pure and acceptable to God in and of themselves. It doesn't mean like from a kind of human standpoint people don't do good things. I mean if you give money to a charity, I it's a good thing. But in a kind of ultimate sense of pleasing to God, even our good deeds often come out of very selfish motives and very self-serving motives.

In a second as like it, shall love your neighbors yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets often, of course, called the golden rule. Treat others as you may, as you do want to be treated.

Jeramie: Christ died for us since therefore we now have been justified by his blood much more shall We be saved by him from the wrath of God for while if we were enemies We were reconciled to God by the death of his son much more now that we are reconciled shall we be saved by his? Life more than that he's not even done. We also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom we now have received Reconciliation yeah, you know the word reconciliation is such a big word in chapter 5. You know verse 1

Allen: much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For while if we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his son, much more now that we are reconciled shall we be saved by his life. More than that, he's not even done. We also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ through whom we now have received reconciliation. Yeah, you know the word reconciliation is such a big word in chapter five, you know, verse one, peace with God.

Jeramie: peace with God, ⁓ verse 10 of chapter 5, reconciliation to God, and then the one you just read, chapter 11, we've received reconciliation. So, we're unreconciled because of our sin, we're under God's wrath, but now, through Jesus' death and resurrection, a new righteousness is available to us, not by our own works, but simply receiving it by faith, that's chapter 4. And if we do that, the result is we're reconciled to God in chapter...
