Sam Wall: Welcome back to the topic. I'm Sam. Zach: I'm Zach and we're back. We're back. Sam Wall: We are officially back. ⁓ for those that listen to the pod but don't don't know, I broke my kneecap like a month ago. And so we took a brief hiatus because I can't sit anywhere or talk. So if you can't tell, I'm literally sitting in my bed right now for the people that watch the podcast. ⁓ knee was broken and dusted. So we're officially back. And we're talking about lanterns. Zach: Lanterns and I I I went on a generational run to be able to film this pod today, just so you guys know. ⁓ I watched zero episodes of lanterns coming into Saturday morning and I clutched up in the fourth and hit that buzzer beater and I ⁓ caught all the way up for the finale and we're good to go now. Sam Wall: Which He caught up at like eight PM, so like an hour before the last episode came out. I've never seen anything like it before. Yeah, ⁓ so we're here to talk lanterns. ⁓ make sure that you ⁓ are following and and ⁓ subscribe, leave a comment of what you thought about lanterns. And ⁓ Patreon episodes will now be on ⁓ probably Wednesdays. We are changing up the format of the pod a little bit. ⁓ Zach: Yeah. Had to be done. Sam Wall: To give you guys more quality content. So ⁓ make sure that you subscribe to the Patreon for extra content. ⁓ but let's go ahead and jump in, shall we? Let's start with ⁓ was lanterns peak or weak? Do you already have an answer? Okay. Three, two, one, peak. It it was so good. Zach: Yeah, for sure. Yes. Okay. ⁓ yeah. Peak. It was peak. Sam Wall: So good. Zach: Expectations played a huge role for me 'cause I had zero. Sam Wall: Do you have do you have a number rating out of ten? Zach: Yeah, I would probably say I'm gonna go eight and a half out of ten. That would be my score. Sam Wall: Yeah. I would probably say eight and a half out of ten as well. When I finished it last night, I was at like a nine out of ten. I think the more that I think about it, it's going down like a little bit. ⁓ but I really, really enjoyed it. Should we let's jump into these categories and then we'll kinda like break stuff down. ⁓ Okay, plot, peak or week. Zach: Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Yeah. I would say peak for sure. Sam Wall: Yeah, I would say plot is peak. I I I feel like for me the plot is the strongest part of the season. ⁓ Zach: Yeah, I agree. I was I was very like roped into what was going on the entire time without really knowing what the hell was going on the entire time, which is a good for sure. Sam Wall: The way that everything is set up and plays through the whole season, even though there's all these like time gaps and time jumps, I think is really, really well done. ⁓ visuals, speaker weak. Zach: No, it is very well done. I would say I would say peak. ⁓ I thought the everything looked really good except for like we mentioned it last night, but like the superhero component of the show, which is kind of problematic 'cause it is a superhero show. But as a show as a whole, like all the shots looked really sweet, so Sam Wall: I actually think that I'm gonna say weak on this. Not because the show itself looks bad. I just don't think like I was there was like maybe two or three shots in the show that actually made me think like, ⁓ this this shot is really cool. I don't think there's like particularly anything super special about the way that it's shot. Zach: Mm-hmm. Yeah. That's fair. I think it's I think I approached it from a like a everything looks good, but like when you put it like that, I would probably say weak honestly, 'cause there's nothing that's like like when you when you watch like other shows, you're like, ⁓ my god, I can't get that scene out of my head But really it's like a big mishmash of scenes in my head, like when I think about lanterns. It's more about what they're saying, not really what I'm seeing. Sam Wall: Yeah, I agree. And the the flying just looks whack. Every time that they fly, it looks terrible. Like there was there was one flying scene that I actually thought was sold pretty well and it's in the first episode and it's the first time anybody flies. It's like when Hal flies away and they're at the restaurant. Like that was the only one where I like, ⁓ that looked really good and then the rest of it just looks terrible. Zach: Yeah. Probably looks like they got flicked off the screen on a meme. Yeah. I think it was I think it was also unexpected, like it just he just kinda like took off. Sam Wall: Yeah. But like whi whenever guy comes into town and his boots like super slowly like lower to the ground and stuff, I'm just like, bro, it looks so bad. It looks so bad. All right. Character, peak or weak. Zach: Yeah. Hundred percent, bro. Hundred percent. Yeah, it was pretty bad. ⁓ that's a definite peak. That's a definite peak. Yeah. Sam Wall: Yeah, I would say peak too. That ⁓ I feel like there were a couple moments where I started to get a little worried just 'cause the character development ⁓ kind of like rushes at points, I feel like. Like Jon ⁓ and Hal are both made so much more interesting by their backstories that I feel like if we hadn't gotten their backstories, like character would kind of be weak, to be honest. Zach: ⁓ huh. Yeah. Yeah. Sam Wall: But I really like their development through the show, especially their dynamic towards each other. I think is the strongest character part of the show. Zach: I agree. And also we did get their backstory, so I won't say if because they actually did it, so you know. We'll give ⁓ props. Yeah. Sam Wall: Yeah. Yeah, and it's good. It's very good. Yeah. did you like Hal or John more? Zach: John, for sure. Sam Wall: Yeah. Yeah, I would agree. I I feel like John I mean he's such a strong character and I really liked Hal. I think Hal's really great. But ⁓ he like for half the season he's just not a good dude, you know? Like very morally grey and like selfish, which is like the point, you know. But Zach: Yeah. Yeah, well we can get into that part of it too, like after we're done with the categories. But I also feel like I kinda felt like Hal was put there to to strengthen John's character as well. Like not that he wasn't supposed to be the main guy, but like obviously John kinda is the main guy, so Yeah. Sam Wall: Yeah, for sure. Yeah. Okay. Memorability, peak or week. Zach: ⁓ I'd say weak, honestly. I'm gonna say weak. I I feel like I feel like this is a show that I'm gonna be very high on, like for a little bit and like I'm gonna be like, wow, that was really, really enjoyable. But down the line when I talk about like my top favorite shows or like superhero stuff or whatever, like I'm not sure that it's gonna be like at the forefront of my brain. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. This is one that's gonna have to stand the test of time for me to see, but I'd probably say weak in the moment. Sam Wall: Mm. I'm gonna I'm gonna say peak just because I've never seen another superhero project like it before. And I think just because of that it's gonna like really stick out in my memory. ⁓ but Zach: That's fair. I have a feeling it could age like fine wine though, honestly. Like I I have a feeling because I'm already seeing a slew of people turning after the finale, like being like, I don't know, like, you know, so normally when that happens, like in a year or two, everyone's gonna be like, you what, that show is pretty damn good after a couple more shitty projects. Sam Wall: Yeah. Also, we should definitely come back to this later, but I also think ⁓ people just hate any ending of any show now, which makes me so upset. ⁓ we'll we'll come back to that though. ⁓ yeah, I Zach: No, a hundred percent. No, yeah, it's just yeah. Also, it's not the ending of the show, it's literally just wrapping up the first season and I think they did it fine. Yeah. Sam Wall: I know. It's crazy. People hate finales now. It's so annoying. ⁓ anyways. ⁓ soundtrack, peak or week. We were just talking about this the other da. Like, we we were talking about it as soon as episode one ended. Every like, I feel like James Gunn's just really good at needle drop stuff. Like, you know, Garns of the Galaxy's known for the needle drops and stuff like that. ⁓ and I know this isn't like directly a James Gunn project, like he didn't direct it right or whatever, but Zach: Very good peak. Yeah. Sam Wall: The needle drops in the show are really good. There's like Boni Vare and Joan Bias. Like it's very like folky. ⁓ and it it works for the show really well. And like they're not like they're not crazy mainstream songs, you know? Zach: No, it is. Also there's like a the end No, they're not. I appreciated that. ⁓ there were a couple but they were well placed and also like I had never heard the song that was at the end of the last episode, but it was like a lot about being a hero and stuff. Like I was like vaguely listening to the lyrics and it it definitely seemed like it it was meticulously chosen. Sam Wall: All the songs fit super well. Super well. Alright, bro, there we go. Zach: Yeah, a hundred percent. Hundred percent. Whoa, one more category, one more category. The writing. Sam Wall: Okay. ⁓ yeah, let me add that to our ongoing list now. Writing peak. Zach: Yeah. Is peak is the best part of the show by far. Sam Wall: The writing of this show, I just like, it consistently took my breath away every single episode. Like some of the lines that are in there. There was one ⁓ there was one line that I think really sticks out to me. ⁓ we were also talking about it yesterday. Sinestro says it, and they're ⁓ talking to him, and he says, Show me a species. Zach: Yeah. A hundred percent. All right, so go go ahead. Sam Wall: ⁓ that is fearless and I'll show you something on the extinction list. Like Zach: Yeah, that shit was mic drop as fuck. That shit was sick. Sam Wall: That's that's such good writing, bro. And every character like has a distinct voice, you know? And the writing's like very realistic. Like it's it's situationally realistic. Zach: No, yeah, it was. Uh-huh. No, it is. It is, 'cause like these types of guys, like who are detectives like that and like always under high stress would be dropping F bombs every other word. And that's exactly how it's depicted in the show, which I appreciated. ⁓ all right, now we'll get that was like initial reactions on everything and now now we're gonna talk real stuff. So spoiler warning, if you haven't watched lanterns, we're gonna get into the nitty gritty. Yeah. Sam Wall: Yeah, big s big spoiler warning. Yeah. Absolutely. ⁓ first of all, I think that the way that this show starts, ⁓ it's got one of the bet better first episodes that I've seen in any show. Zach: Yeah. I think it's because it's there's a level of like mystery. Like you're like kind of where is this going as a Green Lantern show? In my opinion. That's what intrigued me. Sam Wall: Yeah. I also, ⁓ you know, I I know you're try you're getting into comics, but you're not like a huge comics guy. And ⁓ you've told me that you don't like Green Lantern very much, which is fine. ⁓ but Zach: Mm-hmm. On a surface level, I'm just like this like you look at cool factor of a superhero on a surface level. I look at Spider Man, I don't need to be convinced without even like the story behind him. I'm like, Yeah, that's sick. Like Iron Man's sick, like Batman sick. But when I see Green Lantern, I'm just like doesn't move the needle for me. Sam Wall: Yeah, and that's totally fair. ⁓ and everybody has been saying like this is a show that's embarrassed to be a Green Lantern show. And while I agree in a lot of ways, I think they do the characters really well. Like Hal is supposed to be like kind of chaotic and like unexpected and stuff, at least in some runs of Green Lantern. Like I can't speak for all of them, but ⁓ like I love the detail that we even get introduced to in episode one where it's just like, don't let Hal drive you, bro. Zach: Uh-huh. Yeah. Sam Wall: Don't let Hal drive you anywhere. He's gonna like jump out of the car. Like, I I love that that's like a running bit in the show, is that he's just going to like jump out of the car and let it like crash into a telephone pole. Zach: Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ a hundred percent. I I also think there's two, I think this show does two things. Like this is for two types of people. It's you're either gonna be on one side of the fence or the other. You're a huge comic book nerd who loves Green Lantern as a character, and you're gonna leave this show feeling a little bit empty because you did not get enough Green Lantern flying around in his suit being Green Lantern. Or you get people like me who are completely uninterested in Green Lantern, and because the show was so good, I'm now interested in the character. So I think it's like you're either a diehard and you are upset that there wasn't enough Green Lantern as a superhero on the show, or you're like me and you just are happy that the show was so good and well written that now I'm interested in the character I wasn't interested in. Sam Wall: Mm. I mean I also like I've read nothing about this, but there's absolutely no way that Green Lantern comics haven't been selling like crazy since the show has been coming out. Like it's gonna make it so popular. Zach: Yeah, I mean I've seen that Jeff Johns the Jeff Johns run of Green Lantern, everyone's talking about that. Sam Wall: Yeah, that's the one that everybody loves and says is like peak fiction. So I might need to check that out. I haven't read that one yet. Yeah. For sure. ⁓ I what was your favorite episode? I know they probably all blend together for you a little bit, but if y you could give me like a Zach: Mm-hmm. I mean I wanna read it now. I'm more inclined to read that now. I'm more inclined to read it after the show. Yeah, I did binge them, so it's gonna be hard to decipher, but ⁓ let me think. You go first while I think. Sam Wall: Cause I've seen a lot of people saying like John's backstory episode is their favorite or ⁓ episode five is their favorite. I think personally my favorite episode of the show was probably ⁓ I it's tough. I really liked episode seven right before the finale when we're like Zach: Yeah. Sam Wall: getting the kind of like Hal and John buddy cop dynamic a little bit that we didn't get before. I love getting Hal's backstory finally a little bit. And ⁓ there were just some great lines. The writing was really good. The fourth episode, I think the fourth episode is when John draws that guy naked. Zach: Yeah. Yeah. What was the fourth episode I feel like? Yeah, no, that episode was good. I thought I thought that's when shit started really getting real. Sam Wall: Yeah, no, for sure. Zach: Like and I feel like that's when I like was ⁓ yeah, that was the Weenie. That one was called the Weenie. That was funny. Yeah. Sam Wall: Yeah. Okay. So that's the one where when it when it starts Hal's talking to himself on the water tower and they're like they're looking and Zach: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. I liked I actually think I liked that one the most because it like that was the one that locked me all the way into the show. Sam Wall: Honestly, that one felt the most Green Lantern too. Because ⁓ it's the one where John like uses the ring to make that big thing that they go underground with and get into the compound. And then they have those like darkness guns that they're like shooting, and then ⁓ they find that guy that they think might be the manhunter, but he's just a decoy. Like so much is happening in that episode and it's awesome. Zach: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, it was it was electric. That was the one like I was like most locked into for sure. Sam Wall: And it's the one that ends with ⁓ how being like so you knew it was Zoe the whole time and jumping out of the car. Which is peak. Zach: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I think that might be my favorite one. Sam Wall: Yeah, great episode. ⁓ I wanna go back to the writing of the show for a second. Cause ⁓ like there's just there are so many through lines that they do so well. 'Cause like even I was thinking about the finale, ⁓ 'cause we just watched it last night and ⁓ like there's this moment where Hal is no, not Hal. John is giving this monologue to Carrie, the sheriff. Zach: Yeah. ⁓ for sure, we could spend time on that. Sam Wall: And like being like my mom was like holding her breath my whole childhood, you know? And at the end of the episode he like walks up to his mom and hugs his mom and you see her like let out a breath. And like there's just like writing moments like that, bro, that are just like, ⁓ my gosh, the show's crazy. Zach: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's That's the that's the attention and detail that gets me that puts the show over the top for me though. Like like when shows do that type of stuff, I love it. I absolutely love it. Yeah. Sam Wall: Yeah. It's so good. And like it like all that it takes is being intentional about like the choices that you make for the show. And ⁓ all like all that it takes is like caring about the thing that you're working on and not being Simon Kinberg. Zach: ⁓ a hundred percent. Also, I was gonna s Yeah, yeah. Well, that's a whole another conversation. But yeah. ⁓ next podcast, ⁓ we'll ⁓ we'll get into that. But ⁓ if you don't know what we're talking about, we're talking about the Star Wars episode ten news. But ⁓ yeah, no, I agree. And like there's just there's some one liners in there that are just like phenomenal. Like I'm too or or you're too real to fake cry. Like that shit was so hard. That was so sick. Sam Wall: Ha ha ha. There's also just like even things like that, like there are so many lines that would be like under different direction or a different writer would come off so corny and they don't because like they're written into the show so like I even think to ⁓ episode seven when Hal is in the boat and he's like, I'm not fearless cause I'm brave, I'm fearless cause I'm broken. Like in another show that could be corny so easy. Zach: Mm-hmm. ⁓ yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But they depicted him as legitimately broken, like especially like the just his backstory and everything and like the way that he is. And it just I don't know. I l I really like that. But also, I agree with you. This is what set it apart for me from okay, let's do a real quick let's do a real quick ⁓ this or that, okay? Because like I think it's fair to compare this to MCU TV shows and we could go through a couple of them. Like Sam Wall: And it doesn't feel that way at all, you know. Zach: I'll pull them up right now because I I thought many of the MCU TV shows felt flat for me. Like a lot of them. So I like if we're gonna compare, like, okay, maybe it's not as good as like certain movies and stuff, like fine, but like the MCU never moved the needle for like this show. Like I was way more invested in this. Like whether it has the superhero elements or not that people wanted, I just I don't know. Like I enjoyed this more than pretty much everything. Like, would you rather here, I'll I'll find so the only one I haven't watched so far that I think could be better or like is Daredevil I know is good. Sam Wall: And I mean I'll say this I'll I'll say this too, to kind of like relate to what you're saying. The way that you feel about MCU TV shows is the exact same way that I feel about Star Wars TV shows. Like I enjoyed The Mandalorian, but I was never like pulled to it. Like Ahsoka I've been watching, but I haven't really been hooked on yet. And like stuff like that. Whereas like Andor I was like encapsulated by, you know? Zach: Yeah. Yeah. Well that that's that's another thing. Marvel doesn't have an Andor. Like it doesn't, like in my opinion. So there that's that's another thing. Like Sam Wall: Yeah. Yeah. They will now. I guarantee you they will try and do the same thing. Zach: They should. I mean I would prefer well, like I feel like the Falcon and the Winter Soldier could have been like a show that was like lanterns. Like no no no no I know. Okay, so Wanda would you go would you go WandaVision or Lanterns? Sam Wall: Yeah, but they didn't they didn't push in, you know? Which is too bad. If it wasn't for the ending of Wandavision, it would probably be Wandavision, but I'm going lanterns. Zach: Yeah, same. Falcon and the winter soldier or lanterns. Lanterns for sure. Okay, this one this one is the one that's like, okay, maybe I could see it going either way. Loki or lanterns? Sam Wall: Lanterns. Probably Loki, to be honest. I I love Loki. I think Loki season one is like perfect. And I think season two is like an eight out of ten. So Zach: I'm probably still going lanterns. No, it is very good. All right, Hawkeye or lanterns? Sam Wall: ⁓ I haven't watched Hawkeye in a long time, but I like Loki don't remember anything about it, so probably lanterns. Zach: Moon Knight or Lanterns. I'm also going lanterns on Hawkeye for sure. Definitely going lanterns. She-Hulk or Lanterns? Miss Marvel or Lanterns? Haven't seen Miss Marvel. I actually have seen She-Hulk somehow. ⁓ Secret Invasion or Lanterns. I've seen that. Definitely lanterns. ⁓ and then the only other one that I haven't seen is Daredevil Born again, which I heard is pretty good, but. Sam Wall: Lanterns. Moon Knight sucks. Lanterns. Yeah, I haven't seen it either. I haven't seen it. I just I also feel like ⁓ the only one that's really comparable is Daredevil. Cause Daredevil's the only one where they've like actually pushed into like, yeah, we're going to like let it be like kind of like an R-rated TV show. And sometimes Daredevil even still pulls back from that. But like ⁓ like Falcon Falcon in the Winter Soldier so easily could have been like a really dark, like R rated like Zach: Yeah. No, I agree I agree with that comparison for sure. Sam Wall: lanterns type of show and they got too scared and that's ⁓ like I do think that's one of the biggest drawbacks from Zach: Yeah. But we talk about Andor and it's still an incredibly serious like like show and it d it's not R rated. It doesn't have like crazy cursing and stuff in it. So it doesn't need to be that. I just think that Sam Wall: Yeah. I guess I don't even mean like it has to be more intense. I d I mean like they have to take it more seriously. Zach: Yeah, that's my that's my biggest problem with with the MCU shows. Sam Wall: I think the MCU is s terrified of having something that doesn't have a joke every five minutes. Zach: Yeah, which is a problem for me 'cause the jokes take me out of it half the time. Unless it's Guardians, it doesn't always work for me. Like they they just went like Ragnarok is teetering the line of like, Okay, the comedy's hitting, it's funny, but like the the line is love and thunder and you overstepped it and now love and thunder's just corny in my opinion. So I don't know. Sam Wall: Yeah, I agree. And I also think that in something like an MCU show, like they'll do this thing. I mean, I feel like the biggest example of badly timed humor in the MCU, even though I like the movie, is Age of Ultron. I think Age of Ultron's really underrated, but the humor's like just bad. Like in in the first couple minutes where like Zach: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Sam Wall: Cap is like language and then they like make fun of him for saying language like the whole movie. Like that's not funny. And I whereas in lanterns, like all the humor comes from characters like being passive aggressive to each other. Like it's not humor where like it serves the characters and it serves the plot. Zach: Yeah. No. Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. Well, that's that's kinda the point is that we're not saying that there or I'm not saying that there can't be humor 'cause like the lantern's humor was genuinely funny, but it was also like so on brand and so fitting and not forced at all. And like there's a way to do it. You just gotta do it right. Sam Wall: Yeah, all the writing needs to serve the characters. Zach: Yeah, a hundred percent. It did. And like you could you could even tell what kind of jokes the characters were gonna be making a few episodes in, which is like good, that's valid. Sam Wall: Yeah. Like Hal likes corny jokes. Like those are the ones that he makes because and it works for the character and it never it never like actually feels corny because that's his character, you know? It's awesome. Zach: Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I agree. What about ⁓ I was gonna say, like, the one thing that I see people complaining about, right, is that it's not enough superhero Green Lantern stuff in the Green Lantern show, which is fair. But like, is this not is this first season not feel like a setup for there to be more Green Lantern stuff? Like, wasn't like yeah, I was gonna say, like, is it John the a lot of the comp Yeah. Uhhuh. Sam Wall: There's absolutely a setup, yeah. And I think he's dra ⁓ Aaron Pierre, who plays Jon, he's confirmed for the next Superman movie. Zach: ⁓ okay. Well, that makes sense then. Also, yeah, that people were saying, like, ⁓ John has was never in the suit the whole show, all this stuff. And I'm like, I don't that feels almost intentional to me. Like he didn't pick up the ring until the last episode. Like, you know what I mean? Like the whole thing was like the the debacle that he was in kind of the entire show of like, ⁓ do I want to be Green Lantern? Like, how do I overtake this role? Like, from how? Like, there was a lot going on. And then Guy was in the picture and there was just like Sam Wall: Yeah. Zach: I I feel like it was just completely intentional. And I'm like, I'm not I'm also this is Earth's Green Lantern. They said it over and over again. I'm not saying they couldn't have more Green Lantern action, like the the digging vehicle and the flying around and whatever, but like if this is like cause you could like I I hate to keep comparing it, but like you could say the same thing about Andor. A lot of Andor season one was kind of like everyone says it was slower, but like season two was like popped off because of the way season one was. You know what I mean? Like I feel like it could be like a setup season. Sam Wall: Yeah. And I just like I think so much of this show too is like ⁓ I don't know, I like it's definitely being set up for more and I'm excited about that. But so much of it too of season one is like this idea that John couldn't be the Green Lantern that his parents wanted him to be. He had to be the Green Lantern that he wanted to be. And that's like the whole reason that he lets Noah go is because he sees himself in him, like and like what Noah is being like created to be. Zach: ⁓ Sam Wall: And so, ⁓ that'll definitely get explored more. And then also, we have no idea who set Hal's house on fire. Like they were talking about like I didn't set it on fire. I mean it could just be people in the town that hate Hal, but I think that would be kind of disappointing. Like there's still loose ends that they could tie up, you know? Zach: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, there there's a hundred percent loose ends. Like we don't know what Sinestro's doing. They kinda just left him in that port like they left the portal and he was just there. ⁓ so like there's stuff like that. And also, like, I don't know. I just feel like it didn't it was kind of like what does it mean to be Green Lantern? And like that more so that question w instead of like being Green Lantern. Like this was if this was the show and the backstory that they gave us. To set up John being a badass Earth Green Lantern, then I feel like it's probably the best setup season of TV ever. I'm not even gonna lie. Like, so like that's why I'm not counting it. I don't wanna I'm I'm not gonna score it as like, ⁓ there wasn't enough Green Lantern because it just didn't feel like ⁓ all the things like the Are You Afraid lines and stuff like that, it felt like the embodiment of the Green Lantern character. At least that's the vibes I got. I don't know anything about Green Lantern, but when I was watching it, I was like, Sam Wall: For sure. Zach: All the dialogue and the things they're talking about regarding Green Lantern, I still understand what this character is about and what he believes in. Sam Wall: I also like I understand why people are upset, but like blatantly I don't think they're ashamed of it. Like it's not a Green Lantern show. And like I don't I I think that's fine. And I think that people can talk about it that way. Like there's a reason that they don't go to space. There's a reason that they're not like with all the other Green Lanterns and like all this stuff. It's like it's not a Green Lantern show. It's a detective show. Zach: Me too. Yeah. Mm. Yeah. Sam Wall: And he becomes Green Lantern at the very end and that's totally fine with me. And in season two, maybe it'll become a Green Lantern show. But like I feel like in the first couple episodes, like, you know, it's was very clear that like it wasn't going to become a Green Lantern show. Zach: Mm-hmm. Also, if they get greenlit for like a bigger budget for the second season and they're able to fix like the flying and all that shit, like it could be way, way, way Well, well, well, that's kind of my point is like what are the odds that they went full space CGI Green Lantern type show and all the flying looked like it did, and everyone complained that it was the worst looking show of all time and it was terrible. Like I feel like that's what would have happened. So you can either have what we got or you can have Sam Wall: Yeah, maybe the fly can look better. Exactly. Yeah. Zach: The space slop CGI Green Lantern show that you're asking for. Sam Wall: Yeah, for sure. Well, do you have any other thoughts? Zach: No, I don't think so. I feel good about it. I mean, I'm happy that I watched it. I'm happy that I watched it being not a DC guy. ⁓ well, I guess we'll ask one more question. Like, I don't really know much about the DCU because I'm not a DC guy in general. But like, do you think that this sets up like better projects down the line for the DC because universe? Because I feel like also Clayface, I wasn't gonna watch because it just didn't interest me. But with the direction of the way that trailer was going. Sam Wall: Okay, sick. Well Yeah, me too. Zach: It kinda makes it feel more serious and horrifying as if it was like a lantern's tone of show, which makes me more excited to watch it. Sam Wall: Yeah, I mean to be honest, I'm just like really confused about the way that they're starting the DCU in the first place. Like doing Superman and then doing like a Green Lantern TV show that's true detective. And then Zach: Yeah. Yeah, there's no like there's no like formula, it doesn't feel like, but Sam Wall: Like it's not at all like when we started the MCU or when the old DC s universe started. Like, we're not introducing the most important characters and I don't really understand what we're leading up to, but I mean I think it sets up something cool. Here's my problem. And I think you'll agree with me on this. ⁓ since James Gunn has been so blatant about ⁓ Zach: No. First. Well, they already flopped with Supergirl too. Mm-hmm. Sam Wall: We're going to do different tones for everything that we make. I worry that John is going to come into Superman Man of Tomorrow and be this like goofy side character because the tone is different. Like, ⁓ and same with Clayface. Like, I'm worried that we get serious Clayface, we get a serious Batman movie, and then as soon as we get a Justice League movie. Zach: Mm-hmm. Yeah, that would suck. Yeah. Sam Wall: Batman is making jokes with Superman and Zach: This might be a dumb question. Is Batman two is that a part of the DCU? Okay. Sam Wall: No. No. They ⁓ they at least haven't announced it yet. We haven't gotten a cast for Batman, but I'd be shocked. I'd be shocked if Robert Pattinson would do that. Like, I don't see a world where he does. Zach: Yeah. Well, they can also just kind of have like the Green Lantern standalone show that works into the greater scheme of things. Like Star Wars does that a lot with their shows where like they have like people show up in the show, but it's kind of like a standalone. Like it doesn't like it it does tie into the greater universe of Star Wars, but it's not directly impacting other projects. Sam Wall: Yeah, I agree. But also in Lantern's favor, I guess, Guy is in a completely different tone of movie in Superman, and yet when he came into Lanterns, like it totally fit and he made sense. So Zach: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Well what about do you think here's the question though, do you think that like it feels a little directionless? Or do you think that they have a formula and like this is they were testing the waters with the last two movies, then now they have lanterns, clay face, and then whatever comes after it? Or do you think lanterns is just like, ⁓ this one just ended up fucking hitting. We hit with this one and that was just lucky. You know what I mean? Like we made a good show. Sam Wall: I th I think that they definitely have a direction and everything that I've heard about ⁓ Superman Man of Tomorrow makes it sound like it's gonna like one of the best superhero movies ever made. Like it like it has a lot of potential for sure, but it doesn't seem like they have as long of a plan as like MCU did. It doesn't seem like they're like as tapped into stuff, and then there's also I mean Well, I'm sure you've seen the ⁓ Zach: Yeah. Well, MCU doesn't even have a plan like they say they would do, so Sam Wall: the news about the Paramount HBO ⁓ merger and okay, so so Paramount just bought out ⁓ Zach: Did not see that, but Sam Wall: Warner Bros, which owns HBO and ⁓ that means that technically the DCU is kind of in the hands of all of these people ⁓ that that just bought it. And so like it's totally possible that since Paramount just bought this, they're like, ⁓ cool, lanterns did well, no more season two. Like they could totally do that if something in the D C doesn't perform well. Zach: Okay. Mm-hmm. They could Is it is it like a known thing that like most HBO shows are gas? Or is that like just 'cause I feel like anything I've watched on HBO for the most part has been pretty fucking good. Sam Wall: Yeah, I think it's it's pretty well known that HBO like consistently has the best quality, like original shows. Zach: Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Like when you said lanterns on HBO, I like, ⁓ it might be good. Like I don't I didn't have anything to back that statement, but Sam Wall: Yeah. No for sure. I feel like I feel like people talk about HBO and Apple TV that way. Like if you're going to have an original show that like is good, it's gonna be on one of those two platforms. Zach: Yeah. A hundred percent, I agree. Sam Wall: Alright, this has been our review for lanterns. Drop a comment what you thought about it. we'll be back on Friday. We're doing Monday and Friday episodes now. And so ⁓ we will see you guys then. Zach: Yep. And a s sneak peek of what we'll be doing. We'll be going through some nerdy media and saying whether it's peak or week, which is kind of our thing, so we're excited to do that. It's gonna be more of a game style show. This is more of a review. Sam Wall: Yeah. Mine is Might as well just rename the podcast Pika Week, you know what I mean? Alright, y'all. We will Zach: I was thinking of that this morning. I'm so serious. Alright, drop a comment. If you made it this far, do you want us to rename the pod? Sam Wall: If you guys want us to rename it Pikaer Week, let us know. And ⁓ we will see you guys on Friday. Make sure you hit the notifications. And ⁓ yeah, we'll see you soon. Subscribe. Zach: Subscribe, subscribe, subscribe.
