speaker-0: Okay, welcome back, friends of the Twin Peaks verse. It's your boys Nick T and Chris Z welcoming you back to town. Yellow for for episode three Zen Zen or the skilled culture killer. Let let's hop in. How are you feeling going in? We're back to having David Lynch behind the camera and Frost Lynch wrote How is that caller emotional intro? speaker-1: Yeah. I feel like every time Lynch, the director, I feel like you you sit up a little bit more and and 'cause you're you know you're something a little special. And he really in this episode really brings something to like I it's unlike even today, I feel like it's unlike what you'd expect to see on a television show. And this episode is a pretty s there's a lot of things that happen in this one that are if you're in the show already when it comes along all of a sudden we're like it's like you're on a roller coaster and it's like we're going real fast now and it's fun. 'Cause there's so many there's n new characters coming, there's these new visuals and ⁓ it's it's a lot of fun. speaker-0: I loved this episode. I started that my notes even before watching the credits. I I think to myself, I love this episode. And I was so bummed when I've been doing the re-watch in the theater and I had to travel for work the week that they played this one. I was bummed to not get to see it on the big screen. But I every time I watch this one I really enjoy it. I think it's definitely a s a seminal episode of the series. speaker-1: The funny thing is the very beginning with the when the credits are still going and it's the dinner scene, it's just like they're silently eating. It's like almost a full minute of then of just silence that I'm not it's I'm imagining that if my if I ever have a family dinner like that, my own home in the future I'll be quite depressed. speaker-0: You know what I wouldn't mind if it was in like the hotel that my family owned, I could di that that would come from that yeah. It's just like a very cold, sad domestic scene. Objust that. But you think like home is where the heart is, or you look at the different family dynamics, even where we're talking about like the Briggs family and like the natural love that really is there, even though Bobby's like in rebellious stage and you just feel the absence of any kind of familial warmth with group. speaker-1: Yeah, it's it's it's a little bit depressing when you think of that. speaker-0: Until speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. All the the there's music all of a sudden on the soundtrack, he bursts in and I don't have they mentioned him in any other episodes? I don't think so. I love David Patrick Kelly who plays the part. I knew him by the time I watched Twin Peaks, I had seen The Warriors, which he's in and have you seen The Warriors. speaker-0: Big DB. Yeah. speaker-1: the there's a guy who's trying to get all the gangs basically formed together as one group and that so they could be more powerful than the police force and take over the town. But then this is all in the opening of the movie. Somebody assassinates that guy and then they blame it on this gang called the Warriors. And then the Warriors everyone's like flees and the warriors have to get back to their neighborhood in New York while all the other gangs think that they are murdered. Yeah, so they're all after and David Patrick Kelly is kind of like the leader of one of the gangs that's after them. And he's so delightful. Yeah, but I won't say he's got a few line deliveries that are have you heard this it's I feel like it's split into pop culture where there's where someone says warrior ⁓ I guess I can do the impersonation, but where he goes, Warriors come out to play. he so anyway, David Patrick Kelly comes in speaker-0: Nah. ⁓ but I like that. speaker-1: to into Twin Peaks and he's is at least okay. One other thing I was gonna ask, have you seen the show Weeds? The do remember the character on that his name is Andy Botwin? He's the brother in law to he doesn't show up until I think the fourth episode of the first season. And he be I think he becomes a standout favorite character. speaker-0: Yes, yes. speaker-1: on the show and it's funny to think that he wasn't there from the beginning. speaker-0: With perfect comic timing and really pulls focus. I, you know, and the scene is just so ludicrous with the two of them. Bags with free and butter out of a bag that he brought from Paris. And it's just so ridiculous. That are still ha somehow so delicious under the flight to Twin and Paris. up to good deeds. I like the chemistry between the brothers and find it believable as like a a pair of lifelong best friend, you know, have gotten into lots of trouble and had lots of success together. I I buy their energy. I like them. speaker-1: Definitely, yeah. They and they have yeah, they have lots of the memories that they mentioned. Even the sandwiches reminding them of these two girls. ⁓ that's why these are so good. Right. And the and then they go out of the room. I love when Ben he's leaving, he looks at the family. And he's always a pleasure. But it's with such utterance sincerity as he when he the way he says that. speaker-0: Exactly. Exactly. speaker-1: But they yeah, Ben Ben and Jerry ⁓ go into the hall and Ben fills Jerry in on that's been going on. And and then ⁓ they this is where I get think this I don't know if this is the first time we hear about one eyed jacks as a this location that not, you know, at at first we I guess we wouldn't know exactly what they talk about there being a new girl there and speaker-0: I think it is. And from horns at the perfume counter, which we know from last episode is where Ronette worked. So that that's sort of ⁓ you know, you you start to hear you start to make some connections, right? Some mental connections about what that might mean. That the job at the perfume counter what that might be an entree way into, right? speaker-1: It's a pipeline that that they're that they're feeding through. And then you know, one of the jacks. They take a I f I always forget it what they take a boat to get there. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah, yeah. Don't forget before they take their little their little midnight cruise to Winnipegs, we kind of see exactly what's going on there. And I want to give that ample time, especially to Blackie, who I love. But ⁓ don't forget we're eating Huckleberry Pie with the Haywards, which I just have to give a shout out. Mrs. Hayward, Eileen Hayward's love of huckleberries, because she is bate made of huckleberry pie. And then there's this whole scene. speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: And Firewalk with me and the missing pieces where she's made Huckleberry Muffins. And that's where that kind of iconic line, that no spoiler, but a line from the movie where Laura says, I am the muffin. You know what I mean? It kind of sequence of eating, you know. And I I remember very vividly Eileen being There's I got seven Huckleberries in each muffin. Like it was just very ⁓ she's ⁓ she's a Huckleberry gal and and as such and inspired inspired me to buy a Huckleberry. pancake candle from the Snow Qualmy Candle Company up in Washington. I put it online and burned it and it was delicious and I I felt like I was signing with the Hayward. So that now now back to our resident brothel. What what are you thinking as we as we sort of leave one wholesome scene for a a less wholesome scene? speaker-1: One thing the by going to that scene at the Haywards, it it shows us that this is the same night as the previous episode. Because like James is still still there. And I that because it's like a funny thing where you we we leave Ben and Jerry just for that this mo like brief moment at the Haywards, and then go back to Ben and Jerry. And I was like, well that now we know that like that we're still in the same night. That's not the next night because time is very It's it's funny on Twin Peaks, like you'll be watching it and then they'll sometimes be ⁓ it's been a week or it's been this and you're and right, well, it's only been that long because so much happens. ⁓ But ⁓ when I jacks the I love I guess you mentioned being in the Haywards and then we're in when I jacks. It keeps me I keep wanting to ask you, ⁓ like the l there's so many like fun locations on on the show. What is there that that you would like to that you wat that you like I I would like to live there or just like I know you've bit a few of them in in real life, but I'm like I was thinking about it too with Dr. Jacoby's apartment and how like outlandish that place was and I was like it'd be kinda fun to like go over there and hang out one night or something. speaker-0: Yeah, you know, I really I I feel like such a sense of peace every time we we shoot to the Great Northern with the waterfall, the snow palmie falls. I would love to live by there. Also, I think Pete and Catherine and Josie's little love nest for three. I love that little I love that little sort of setup on the on the water with the big log, you know, my poor Laura's, you know, corpse. But the the rest of it like is quite enchanting. So and I mean there's so many spots and honestly I always wish I could just sit in the double R diner. Like, don't you wish that was in your town? Like, don't you wish we could just go meet and tape our podcast and go have cherry pie, you know? There's a there's a lot about it. There's a lot about it I love. There really is. What about the speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ speaker-1: Just for the just for the the outfits of the Yeah. But the diner is definitely every time they're in there and they're ordering something, I'm wishing that I could have but then I get upset when they order something and they don't actually eat it or don't get it and I'm like 'cause there's a few times where like even in in this episode Audrey ordered coffee and she doesn't drink it, she just like rubs her finger along and then ⁓ there's a later on there's someone orders there there's some characters having some food and someone asks for certain type I think certain type of soda. speaker-0: I the outfits are I have to say. speaker-1: And then they wind up getting up and leaving from the table without her ri and she never touches the the soda. So yeah I would definitely like to go to the blar diner. It's the short version of that. speaker-0: And that is where I bought you the the pin of Laura and Bob. It's from that diner. They they lean into it. They sell it large flag. I have like a I got a a tie-dye t shirt with like Cooper, like Greek, like a with Coop on it. Like they they definitely they lean into it. The waitress was wearing ⁓ the waitress we had was wearing the sweater of like Donna holding her arm sobbing when she found out. It's like they they embrace it, which I think is fun. speaker-1: I love it. Now here, let's see, one eye jacks. So we meet Blackie. Tell me tell me your th your feelings about Blackie. speaker-0: She just like she's a bad girl, but like she's a she's a bad girl, but also like a bad ass. And as we kind of see her arc and the way it goes for her, which she ⁓ kind of gets into. But like, yeah, I mean, look, she's sort of like I I think like some sort of dark spin on the, you know, Dolly Park and best little whorehouse in Texas. Like she's like she's like her dark image, right? It's like You've got this like bubbly booby blonde who, you know, loves her girls. And then you have like Blackie, who's sort of like black hair, black dress, black heart. And and black Yeah. You know, she's like the black law, best little whorehouse. And that's kinda like this is like the the Hellscape version of that, right? So but no, I mean I just think that she she leaves the mark. She doesn't have a huge role, but she leaves the mark. speaker-1: Cloud version. Yeah, she's she's definitely I I enjoy whenever she's she's around and w watching her story play out later on. speaker-0: ⁓ my god. And she definitely could go if she crosses the border to have her hair done, she may go to to Sarah Palmer's hairdresser. Very culturally permed locks that look like that you could see them sitting side by side at the beauty salon, right? Like catching up on Girl Talk My Daughter. I was her madam. Right. speaker-1: Yeah. Is that we heard my God. Yeah. speaker-0: Yeah, it's all happening. speaker-1: Now I was gonna comment on Ben reciting ⁓ like a Shakespeare in this scene with when Blackie comes out and he doesn't just say a line, he he he's doing the whole the whole thing. And I was thinking about what what kind of a person has an entire Shakespeare sonnet memorized by heart and at the ready just whip out? Like, does he I was like, Do you have to have a like unless he was into theater or or l loved Shakespeare growing up, or he has a photographic memory just to be able to obviously it's It's written by writers who wrote the script and speaker-0: But what were they trying to tell us about it with it? I get what you're saying. speaker-1: Yeah, he's very theatrical. speaker-0: Theatrical and like kind of a genius. Look, he's got his hand in all this bad shit. He's basically running the town. You know, everything's got his name on it. Like he's a he's a smart dude. And like I I don't know. It it might be okay to say a bad dude. Maybe maybe who gets rede redeemed in such may like maybe not a bad dude, but certainly one who just like follows his baser urges wherever they may lead it. You know, he doesn't seem to have much of a conscience. Again, I you know, I I notice here I really feel like I'm I I like Donna and James right now. Like I'm like I'm sort of giving into it and I'm like they they are giving a counterbalance here to some of the bad shit that's going on that is really nice. Their whole little like, you know, ⁓ meet cute first date buds. Well, I guess they had meet cute, it was like, you know, the their dead friend, but ⁓ date cute and coming together. It's nice. speaker-1: And they yeah, and they're confessing their feelings and they're also confessing that like they've had these feelings for a while and they were they couldn't act on them because of of Laura being there. So it's not so much that like this is something that's just come up now that Laura's not around, it's something that speaker-0: Bigman's theme. And they're kind of parita feel now. And I do actually have right under that that Coop returns to the Great Northern and we get a great view of the waterfall at night. And I wish I could look at that view every single night. I have that written in my So it's very ⁓ you know, it's funny with how much time we're spending with the series. There's some aspects of it that you're like, ⁓ it feels like I'm a record. I wish it was home. You know, it's nice. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, every time the it's been in particular it's watching it in th in the theater, every time the the credits come on and you're and you're just brought back to to the town response. speaker-0: I love it. And even the ending credits over Laura's framed picture, like it's it's like the X the outro. I like that part too, like seeing that on the big screen. speaker-1: Agreed. Let's see. So co so Cooper, yeah, he we we get a little touch up on a few things. This is where he hears about the one armed man snooping around, the other dog tells him about. And then he gets the notes that says Jack with one eye and the notes fra it's got a fragrance to it that he that he seems to enjoy. speaker-0: Yeah. You see him take a smell and then you know. I mean, I don't know if we if the viewer knew at that time, but it's like pretty obvious that's Audrey, right? I mean, we know now. We've seen it a zillion times. But I feel like yeah, he smells the perfume and knows and it's like, who else would it be? You know, like Lucy. Yeah. Sarah Palmer, like who how many, you know, women ⁓ Josie and the and their inner fish coffee, like who who else could it be? So speaker-1: Audrey, because they haven't necessarily had her come out has she come out and said too much later in this episode, she asks Donna about her about the Audrey asks Donna about Audrey's dad and Laura. Yeah. And then there's he she clearly is giving Cooper a a clue about Jack with one eye. So she's got something on her mind that's I don't know if she's necessarily had the chance to fully talk about it yet. speaker-0: Yeah. No, we haven't we we get more of that in the next episode, but it kind of she has her suspicions. You know, we hear her she leaves the note about Jack with one eye. She obviously knows that her dad has some connection to it. You know what I mean? And then then to then ask later in the episode, like, did Laura ever talk about my dad? Like, she has some ideas about what might be happening with her dad and and one eye jacks, and perhaps that Laura was caught up on it certainly. speaker-1: I guess we can we can assume that maybe when Ben and Jerry were talking about going to one eye jack's earlier in in the episode, that she overheard something. speaker-0: Well, they show the painting. They don't show her lean they don't show it like there are times later on where they show her come and look through. They don't show that. But they do do like a close up of like over a painting in the whole Yeah. And I sort of thought to myself, like, I bet she's I bet she's there 'cause I feel like she's got the Jerry rigged, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. They push in on that. Yeah. It must be 'cause it's the same it's the same it's like shortly after they've gone there. So it's like as if she she then went and wrote that note and then slipped it to Yeah to Cooper. speaker-0: Correct. I gr I I picked up on that too. But they never he doesn't give it to you there. They don't give it to you like spying on him, but like they there's a slow pan on that painting. speaker-1: Yeah, 'cause you wonder why. Well, why are we looking at that painting right? speaker-0: I then that's I did too. I was like, ⁓ she's behind there and then I'm like, ⁓ they never tell us that they'll do that. But that'd be one, right? speaker-1: Yeah. All right. speaker-0: And then Coop since it's anonymous no. Yeah, of course. No smell. You know, and I have to if this kind of I have to just give a little moment to say because we're gonna see it. I do love the chemistry between Coop and Audrey. I know it was like written and it's a little controversial because she was a senior. They make it cle they try to make it clear a couple of times that she's eighteen. They try to put that out there. Yeah. I read and tell me if you've heard this, that they did have a plan. for that to go more in the romantic direction, but that part of it was that Lara Flynn Boyle played Donna was dating him in real life and like made a stink about it and they kind of pivoted him back. That could be completely made up. But ⁓ have you ever heard that? speaker-1: I've heard that too, but and it's just from little like things that I've seen here and there over time. It's it's possible, I guess. There's a lot of stuff that happens between with Cooper and Audrey, like not romantically, but like there's you know or yeah, going together for a while. ⁓ but then they eventually do have other romantic stuff. speaker-0: Connection. partner. They come in different directions. And I do think ⁓ you know but sometimes the the hottest romances are the ones that where the deal are then sealed. And so maybe just the flirtation chemistry makes it even better. You know, so 'cause it is yeah they do have great chemistry. speaker-1: Yeah. People can can ship them in their in their imaginations. speaker-0: Yeah, it's like a little bit of fun. But then we kinda leave there and we head back to our boys, Beavis and Butthead, prowling to the woods. speaker-1: We've got yeah, I have Bobby and Mike and Mike's got a switchblade. And this is like a I feel like this is a trait ⁓ I feel like this is a like a trademark Twin Peaks visual of of walking through the woods at night with a beam of a flashlight as the only light source that we we get with two of them. And we eventually see that they're going to like a it's like a drop spot where they're expecting Leo to have left them some drugs that that they're gonna sell and they're supposed to leave money for him in the football that he'd been preparing in the ⁓ speaker-0: When we see him, did you notice this? The I felt like what you said in the beginning where this really jumps out at me like it's really special when David Lynch is is kind of behind the camera. I love what he does with Leo's face in the flashlight with when they're in the woods and he's scaring them. Just the way that the the light in his face, it makes it like so haunting and scary. You know what I mean? Like really with like a sort of a sim ⁓ like it. It almost feels like simplicity. You know it wasn't, but like it really is just kind of masterful direction that like I'm like, God, what cool imagery, you know, like all the sticks with you, you know. speaker-1: He knows that. He knows how to like elicit those r responses from the viewer. And then this is I mean, this is like ⁓ unanswered question thing that happens here with with the with the guy that's in the woods with the ski mask. Do we we we I I don't think it's ever speaker-0: Who is them? We don't know. speaker-1: And it's it's it's almost like this strange thing 'cause like Bobby has a big reaction to it. And he asks and it's a creepy thing to see. And he asks Leah, he says, Who who's that? Is there someone with you? And Leo is just he's d doesn't react much to it, he just says, Never mind, and then tells them to give him the football. So it's ⁓ it's almost as if it's like does Leo know that there's someone there and it's no big deal to him or or it's like ⁓ It's it's it's odd. speaker-0: It was just giving me Lost Highway. Now hear me out. Granted we're in the woods, so it's not like a direct corollary, but it was giving me that that feeling of first of all, just the lighting in his face. That was something about that to me reminded me of a lost highway scene. Yeah. speaker-1: ⁓ and any clear and and the it being in in Lost Highway being like a take he takes it even further, I guess. And play with that kind of a thing. So and then ⁓ let's see here. So we've got there's a bit of a there's one like s we can later on we can talk a little bit spoilery with ⁓ stuff about Leo and what he knows about speaker-0: Uh-huh. Shelly running around. You know, speaker-1: And then yeah, and then yeah, that ⁓ I was thinking how like Bobby's really like we we've seen that Bobby is having an affair with Shelly, but we're learning now that he's also got a dynamic with Leo as this as this as a drug dealer guy. So I was thinking how like how Bobby's being very bold, sleeping with the wife of the guy that he's buying the drugs from. speaker-0: So he also is like clearly afraid of too. It does explain some of that reaction from the pilot, right? That it kind of strikes you when Shelley and Bobby are pulling up and they see the truck and it's like his panic exceeds just like this woman's husband is home. It's like, but then we find out about Psycho, so it tracks, but then you really find out this bit. It's like psycho and he's his drug dealer, he owes money too. There's a lot. There's a lot, there's a lot going into that that choice. speaker-1: You know. ⁓ And he I don't he d Leo doesn't know at this point that it is Bobby, I don't think. speaker-0: I don't think so. I don't think so. I mean, you can't really tell it's like I I just kind of think though Leo's not one personality that you would have like stabbed him in the neck. You know what I mean? Like I don't think he would have like, you know, been mentally torturing him with it, right? speaker-1: Yeah. Now the next the next scene is with ⁓ we get it's Adam speaker-0: ⁓ really? Yeah. Yeah. And she mentioned Nadine working on her fitness, getting like a little delicious action there. Like I'm like ⁓ she's looking good, you know? She's little rowing machine. Yeah. ⁓ she's keeping it tight. She's looking good. speaker-1: Gotta gotta g it's got you know, it doesn't gotta work at it. speaker-0: That's it, you know, it's like ⁓ she's keeping she's keeping it fresh, man. speaker-1: Now this is the one thing I want to say and we'll and we'll and that this will be important later in our discussion, that this is the first daytime scene in the episode. It's everything has so far has been nighttime and the continuing the night from before. And now as Ed is entering the house covered in grease, it's daylight out. So later I'm gonna I'm gonna mention that later on. ⁓ but ⁓ I'm wondering like why is he coming? I know we learn why he's covered in grease. I'm wondering why is he going into the house covered in grease? But he he he has a gar like a gas station garage right there, right? Like and I assume he's got facilities there to clean up. Like I I don't know why you'd go into your home dripping. speaker-0: Right. Needed to drop oil on the drape runners, my friend. That was yeah. Is ⁓ you know, ⁓ again, it's sort of like ⁓ Ch Chekhov's cotton balls, right? It's like something just something had to happen to get those things quiet. And ⁓ And also just I feel like Lyge and Pros like Navy and they like to give her kind of outlandish she's an outlandish character and and really like speaker-1: Yeah. speaker-0: You know, they always seem to turn up the volume with her and this was like no different. You know, she just has like this total meltdown as he's tracking in the oil and they we used to get a preview of her superstar she bends, the the rowing machine breaks it, you know? It's speaker-1: And is is that another like unanswered th thing that like why she's so strong? speaker-0: Unclear. I mean, I think we're being shown that she has some sort of like hormone imbalance that like ⁓ gives her some side sort of weird super strength. It certainly comes out as we we know in season two, not to spoil like, you know, we don't want to get ahead, but you it it does. But it is a preview of like, you know, this woman's got some stuff going on, you know. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. And it's and he just I guess Ed just accepts that as as as part of who she is and what makes her special. speaker-0: I guess it's just part of their love story. Part of part of their love story. Well, but look, what what we really you know, this is where we see Coop and the gang heading to the woods, which I love. I love that. So what are you what are you feeling as you're seeing this sort of like got cadre of people come together in the woods? speaker-1: Well yeah, we see them starting to set up she's got a chalkboard, all the donuts. The first time you watch it, you don't know what exactly is like w why are they in the woods and what is happening. But but now n having seen the show, this that sequence is one of the the great speaker-0: It's a scene. ⁓ speaker-1: like one of the key scenes of the whole series, if if I mean at least the first season. So to get a little y to start it there ⁓ yeah it's like a little it's like a little tease of what's with the speaker-0: Yeah, no, 'cause you know what's gonna come and it is that's why I was so bummed to miss it on the big screen 'cause it is. It's just the scene is so good. It's so good. speaker-1: Yeah. Off of that little moment we we do we also get our first little we get a I think this is the first of the invitation to love. speaker-0: ⁓ and Shelly's watching. Yes, Shelly's watching it at hell. And you know, it is I I love Invitation to Love because I I loved watching soap barbers and I was always like watching with my grandmother when she was like, you know, babysitting me or something. And I I always like I I do get a kick out of even remind because I know soap barbers are still on, but it used to be like there was a bunch of them and they were always you know, so it's like it was very of the moment and also tongue in cheek about like you know, the the soap operatic ways that he you know, in which the show operates. There's so many storylines and they're all woven together, you know. So it is it is soap operatic. speaker-1: in that way. Yeah. Yeah. And there's all it was like so many affairs being had and like different relationships constantly going on everywhere. Dave you seen you're making me think of like the there's the movie there's Tootsie was it soap dish? speaker-0: Yes, good one. I fucking want to soap this. Excuse my language. God, I love that. God, I love that movie. And that was just about because yeah, I think that like eighty nine. I loved that movie. speaker-1: Yeah, I need to watch that again. I th speaker-0: Think of that. Sally Field where she's got she's got the turban on and I look like Gloria fucking swan. So good. I love that. So good. So good. speaker-1: Now ⁓ so okay. So she so Shelly's watching it. Invitation to love. Yep. And she she turns it off 'cause she's she's she's not feeling the the the the tagline of it being like each day brings a new beginning and every hour holds the promise of an invitation to love and then she's like she turns the TV off 'cause she's not she doesn't have anything like that in her marriage. Yeah. But then she does have that. But she does have that with Bobby who shows up. speaker-0: To her, you know. speaker-1: And he sees the bruises on her face from ⁓ from Leo the night before. And Bobby acts a lot different about Leo when he's with Shelly than he does when he's with Leo. But when he's with Leo, he's like this frightened little little lamb. speaker-0: And but that's it's almost an interesting juxtaposition 'cause you see how afraid he is of Leo, but then in that moment, I don't know that he'd ever have the guts to do it, but you feel like he means it. And I'm like, you know, you really do feel like he loves Shelly. And I like you like their relationship. 'Cause I do think, you know, all through all three seasons I like I like the two of them together and root for the speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. They're it's it's a really good pairing. It's good actors paired well together. speaker-0: Yeah. I agree. speaker-1: And then we go to another illicit affair with ⁓ Ed Norma speaker-0: Resident SAT couple. I know the resident sad sad. I'm just like I can't get behind them because it's just too dramatic. I'm like, ⁓ my god, just leave these people and be together already or like shake it off. You guys have to speaker-1: But he's he's got these ⁓ these there's like these edisms that these like things that he says in and this one it's he says it's not the first time, it won't be the last, but I'm in that doghouse again. Yeah. I feel like he's quoting like a Wayland Jennings like country song or something like that. And he's got the voice to go with it. So I I kind of I get a kick out of that. speaker-0: Hey Dance, you're right. Yeah, and even it's sort of like when he even when he was talking about how he got drugged at the roadhouse a couple episodes back where he's like, I was already dead on my feet You know, he's just does sort of the delivery matches sort of the country western ⁓ vibe of the of the you know, dialogue. I agree. speaker-1: And then yeah, these are these little mo like and it's just a small little moment that we get there with them, and it's little moments that are not necessarily moving plot along, but they're building like the world. These character interactions. Yeah. speaker-0: That's why we're people keep coming back to it, you know. It's like if it was just about Laura Palmer's murder, right, eventually that gets more or less solved. But it's like it's the people. Like you wanna be in the town, you know, he real they the two of them really booked this bridge town. speaker-1: Exactly. So we so we'll so we're back in the woods then with the speaker-0: We go and I I let's talk about this scene and really give it to, but then I'll give a little ⁓ intel on it that I had I had read from one of the books. He probably read it. What are what are you feeling you know when we kind of arrive in the woods and start to see things onfold? I have to give a shout out to the fact that they brought copious donuts and a table to set them up on. I appreciated that. ⁓ like, you know, you gotta do you, even if you're taking it on a field trip. But ⁓ you know, how how did How are you feeling as you're seeing this the this kind of start to be set up? speaker-1: ⁓ I f I mean I f I've watching this scene fe j it just feels like the it's like the it's the show is is just flexing. Like if someone's asking you what's the show like and you wanna show them this scene and you're kinda like this is a great way to just give you a taste of you have you have all of your your the good guy characters like with the with the Cooper and Truman and Andy and Hawk and Lucy and and they are all so unique and specific and they're getting to do so much in the scene. There's like just there's just so much fun to watch. And it's also it goes off in all these directions that you're you see the chalkboard and everything and there's words on there. And then Cooper goes and flips the board over and starts talking about Tibet and you're and you're and then I love how the character everyone that he's talking to they all like lean in in their seats as he's doing this because you're you're usually okay yeah you've you've reeled me in and I wanna hear all about this. So one thing what he tells the story about the with communist China invading Tibet and seizing control and then the Tibetan uprising and the Dalai Lama fleeing to India. And that was while he while watching it just I 'cause I've been reading the the the book The Secret History of Twin Peaks. And I was while watching it this time, I was thinking about how in that there's ⁓ The story of the of the Native Americans that were living in the area around what became Twin Peaks originally and how they were forced from their land and relocated and how they they tried to flee to Canada but and they were tracked down and I was I was like noticing all these ⁓ corollaries between between those two things and how they speaker-0: weave it in and how much more you know it's even, you know, we've been saying it the kind of throughout ⁓ you can really tell the love and respect that they have for like the nat the the true native people of the Pacific Northwest. I feel like they try to yeah shine a light on that and and show respect for it in a way that's interesting. And when you read those books you feel it even more because they really do get into it. speaker-1: Yeah, and how and how the displacement of them and and with and the treatment is played a role in the in the evil that yeah, in the woods, exactly. Yeah. ⁓ speaker-0: Well, not we'll talk about it in the spoiler section, but even how he talks about sort of the the evil of the world, how that came about in season three. It's like yeah, ⁓ you know, he does he he makes those points, right? speaker-1: Well they get into his deductive technique that Cooper Scott was the ⁓ and they're trying Yeah. speaker-0: He learned in a dream. And then he had a dream and and he woke up with having understood certain things about the Tibetan technique. And and he shows it off. He's flexing for his friends with, you know, sort of whispering the name of all the potential suspects who start with a J and throwing a rock to see, you know, if if if it gets close or shatters the glass. speaker-1: And it it's like a funny little again, it's a a little way to remind the audience of who the 'cause it they say the name of the character, their relationship to Laura Palmer, and they show you like they pop flash to those characters while they're doing all this. It's like little f like for the audience watching, like now here was James, this is what he looks like, here's Josie, and then here's Jacoby and speaker-0: You Which is smart with a sprawling cast, right? Yeah. So it's like a smart thing. speaker-1: Now one I was gonna say the ⁓ the part where Andy gets hit with one of the rocks bounces off the tree and hits Dandy in the forehead. speaker-0: Getting hurt. Yeah. Getting hurt. And then ⁓ true. speaker-1: Truman says to him, where there's no sense, there's no feeling, Andy, and then like he says I'm like, do you have you heard that in any way before? The way he says it, I'm like, it seems as if it's a reference to something and that Andy seems to get it. Like because Andy like starts the way he laughs, the way Truman says it. I'm like, is it j is he just making this a joke? Or it was almost as if ⁓ like when you hear like someone say something that they know someone else knows what like it's little reference to but just the two of them know about. And then they speaker-0: Yeah. And maybe it is right. Like maybe it is building that the kind of just like the depth of the friendship or element together. And just that sense that like Andy gets called num nuts plenty. Yes. speaker-1: And then we have so Leo Johnson is the one where the glass breaks where you speaker-0: Although it does shake the glass at Josie Packard. So we are being led down a path of like feeling like 'cause it hits at the closest it comes until which kind of surprises you at the time. And then, you know, ⁓ they're they're leading up to something with her and just generally. But then I mean with Leo, it shatters. And this is the part where in one of those books there's this interview with Kimmy Robertson who plays Lucy, and she said that Comic Lachlan actually did shatter it. When they were throwing and so her reaction was real when she jumped up, she was like it really did happen and we were so I was so excited. You know, so something was something to to Google. But yeah, I that's fun. I think that's cute. Especially 'cause I think she's cute generally. speaker-1: Yeah, she does she had a big reaction. Yeah. Yeah. I I I enjoyed her i ⁓ hearing her when we went to the ⁓ that the cast. speaker-0: She was fun. We have to do our weekly rep I was gonna say yeah. The speaking tour. You know what? We need to send this to these people and ask for sponsorship. But no, it's really I agree. She was fun and her fun story. speaker-1: The s she s didn't she s she sang ⁓ a song, didn't she? Uh-huh. Yeah. speaker-0: No, or in Leland. It was like really yeah kind of like ⁓ Broadway out there. speaker-1: I wish I had a an audio recording of of that. Now we this so after he shadows the glasses, we get a little act out here, which must probably commercial break back in the day. And we come up on we're at the double R Diner. Yes. Yeah. speaker-0: I know. Love this scene. Audrey scenes of the series, Audrey's Dance. I love it. speaker-1: I had a question. So Donna and her parents so yeah, Audrey comes in and Donna and her parents are there having I guess we they're having breakfast maybe after having gone to church that morning because they talked about going to church and they comment about how Audrey went to church too. Did we ever see a church on the show or any or anyone associated with a church? speaker-0: Well we just see the priests at the funeral next week. That's that's you know, we get and w and then so we get the cemetery and the priests at the butt really yeah. speaker-1: Okay. True. Okay. And then but my my question is in this scene, they went to church, they're here having breakfast or something. The night before we were in their home while they're having dinner, where are Donna's sisters during all this? Two younger sisters. speaker-0: Yeah. I don't know. That's a fair logistics question. Agree. speaker-1: ⁓ but so and then Audrey puts on some music and again this it's like a thing where it's like what you think would be score, but it's actually music that's playing in the scene. And in the soundtrack of the song is called Audrey's Dance. And yeah, it's like why would a song like that be on a jukebox in a in a diner? I don't know, but ⁓ I I love that it plays throughout the scene. I love speaker-0: And I love where she's just dancing on her own and says, like ⁓ you know, isn't it too dreamy? I have a stick on my laptop that I got at the double R Diner. dancing there and it just says, Isn't it too dreamy? It's like ⁓ I'm I just love that scene. speaker-1: How do you feel about Audrey in terms of her social life? Like while while I was watching this scene in particular, I was just thinking like like people all everyone seems to know her and she knows everyone, but she's often alone. Like she like at one point she was she's claiming that Laura was her friend, but we know that she's just saying that. But she but like she I guess she maybe went to church by herself. She's here getting coffee by herself. We often see her alone a lot. ⁓ I feel like there's like a certain sadness. And we know she's like hungry for romance ⁓ on the show, but ⁓ so when when Donna walks over to her to start talking to her, it it's almost like a it makes me feel happy that Donna is like sees her alone and Donna's like, I'm gonna go I'm gonna go like say hi and talk to her a little bit. If there's someone who doesn't have a friend or is feeling and then that that it takes speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: a certain type of other person to see that and want to go over and talk to them kind of a thing. speaker-0: Yeah. And I agree it's sort of it telling us something about both of them and doing, right? But that there's a melancholy to Audrey. And I think it's like they've shown it too. It's consistent with like look at her family life. It's like this is a woman who has on a lot of armor and she has a romantic heart, but she's got a lot of armor on. She doesn't have, you know, her her home life is not gonna speak of. she kind of feels like she's in a little bit of a lone wolf. Like she takes care of herself and and probably only trusts herself, you know, and then The counterpoint is this Donna Hayward who's, you know, has this really loving family and this really, you know, bonds with people and you know, has these really deep ties with Laura and James and even with my I mean someone who's open to people, you know, and even when everyone's comforting her when she's crying. Right. Or she's someone, you know, exactly like people rally to her side quickly. So it's sort of a simple scene, but it it is telling you something about both of them, the kind of women that they that we're supposed to understand in the day. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, the contrast there. speaker-0: Yeah. How they still found commonality and they both still loved Laura for different reasons, right? I mean again, it's like she was the one that connected the many. speaker-1: Yep. Shall we move on to speaker-0: The FBI arrives on the scene. Boy Albert. I feel like you're an Albert Stan. I feel like Albert. I feel like he I feel like I've heard you speak about him bond late. speaker-1: Well I well one thing I'll say is that ⁓ I when I ⁓ whenever I see him I have a like a there's like a pr a sort of a personal thing where I one of my first jobs was as as like a entry level position was working on the T V show Crossing Jordan. And the actor that plays Albert w was on that show. Yeah. But I didn't like it was I just never really thought about it when I was there and I never like asked him about it. And like and so now every time I watched the show I like remember that I'd like worked on something with him. But also like the missed opportunity of not Yeah. I he was he was it was like a ⁓ it felt like he took he was very s like serious about the work kind of a thing. ⁓ so it wasn't like he wasn't all like there was there were other actors on that show that were very ⁓ jokey and like kind of like y yeah, a lot of like like more fun personalities in terms of when they were around. ⁓ so that might have been another like reason why I w maybe wouldn't have said something but ⁓ hindsight I'm like yeah it seems I mean whenever I've asked an actor about something from their past, they usually enjoy talking about it, I feel like. Unless it's something that they speaker-0: Yeah. Well that they won like the bad people or something, right? speaker-1: I mean like especially the people in this police station. And then Albert comes in and he's a real jerk to everybody. But he's but it's but he's but he but he does it in a in like a I like I think you're supposed to maybe kind of like find it entertaining, even though you're you're like, Jesus, this guy's a jerk, but it's it's he's it's it's so jerky and and cutting that it's kind of laughable in a way. speaker-0: Everyone. You see Cooper laughing, right? And Cooper's not one that would let people probably, you know, get away with shitting on his friends. See that later on, but he's he's bemused by Albert's speaker-1: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah, he's he's a fan of Albert in spite of in spite of that stuff. So it kind of it yeah, that kind of wins you over in a way. But then I mean this is a spoiler, but like there's certain things about Albert later on that you you see other sides to him later in the series. speaker-0: Correct. It's a layered character. So the It almost reminds me of like it's almost like the hard charging New Yorker shows up in like the country town in New Hampshire kind of vibe. Like like it you know, like the the someone who's the really the fish out of water and like just kind of intrinsically thinks he's smarter than let everyone around because they're not from a city is like a bumpkin or something. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. I was gonna say one of my favorite moments in an episode full of favorite moments is just before Albert. Well, actually, no, it's when Albert gets there and we and Cooper is giving Truman a heads up about Albert ⁓ he says lacking in ⁓ social niceties. And Cooper has his his hand on Truman's shoulder and then Truman like looks at it, and then Cooper grabs Truman's nose and like makes like a honking type sound. And both start they both start giggling like little boys. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. ⁓ it's I feel like their friendship is like at an all time high. Yeah. In that moment. ⁓ I just I always get a I I always forget that that's gonna happen and then it happens. I'm like, yeah. speaker-0: I think something that's so special about this episode is you really feel the alchemy of the cast coming together. You really feel like these relationships feel start to really feel real. And that's pretty impressive by the, you know, we're you're really in the third episode of a series. And so Albert's on the scene. We have ⁓ a beamused Cooper, we have a real pissed off sheriff by the end of it who who throws some threats his way and kind of starts the rivalry that we'll see play out over a couple episodes between the two of them. But then where are we? We go to an ecstatic Nadine. W because Checkov's cotton balls had been used. speaker-1: Her the way she like runs into him at in like the sprint is because you're you're like, what's gonna happen? What's gonna happen? And then she just like hugs him. This is also when so she makes a comment saying that they're gonna be rich now. Uh-huh. And I guess we and I cause I ⁓ I wonder if did we know before like so I this is this is like a business plan that she's got. It's not just it's not just for personal use. Cause I feel like it seemed like it's been this like where like this she this lady really wants. Drapes, these certain drapes and she wants quiet drapes and and then she com and and I don't know if maybe w if was it a business plan all along or she all of a sudden was like, wait a minute, this is this is gonna be big. But it becomes a business plan for speaker-0: I think it's like one of those things where it's like well you don't know for sure, but it seems almost like it's just for home use because she's like, ⁓ Ed bought me all new drapes when she's kind of like Yeah, you know, giving it to Norma in the hardware store. And when he seemed bought me all new drapes, gonna hang them. And then suddenly it's like her eyes see dollar sign that like such a cut up in the idea. Even though when you hear it, you're thinking, like, how are you gonna build a scalable product that involves all your cotton balls in the living room? It's just it's so ⁓ It's so silly, but like, you know, I just I feel like I I feel like Roth and Lynch really liked Nadine and like those fun things with her. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah, it's not a character you see ⁓ too often on on a T V show. speaker-0: Not enough. Not enough eye. Not enough get rich quick schemes from person with the eyepadge. So we'll more nadine in our life, but so then we we ship back to like the world's saddest marriage, right? Well, no, maybe Ben and Sylvia Horn are the world's saddest, but we we we we ship back to a pretty, pretty salty one with Pete and Catherine. He's shining his boots, they're they're, you know, chit chatting. She's kind of trying to suss out from him what what Cooper was asking about what he was doing around. ⁓ huh. speaker-1: This the this is where I was gonna come I mentioned earlier how it was it was day daytime when Ed she says here, Catherine says she they talk about Cooper and Truman being there to talk to Josie, but she says that it happened today. ⁓ in the scene. What were they here to talk to Josie about today? Or were they doing here today? But it was yesterday. It must have been yeah, I assume it might because when when I've looked through speaker-0: Do you think it was just editing? speaker-1: the scripts, there's there are a lot of scenes that are in different orders. In the in the in this script f just and I didn't read it cover to cover, but the opening with Ben and Jerry and One Eye Jacks, that all they don't cut to the Hayward's house in between that. And they they they they play out the whole Ben and Jerry one eye jack stuff all the way through. So there's there's definitely stuff that ⁓ in the in the editing room they move some things around. And so I guess they might have they might have just said We'll let we'll just have to let this one slot. speaker-0: Yeah, we're not gonna reshoot over them kind of because it's small enough that only a very astute person who works in Hollywood such it. It's small, but you that you'd wait a minute. You've got the eye for it. speaker-1: Yes. But this we we see here Pete sneaks a key to Josie. speaker-0: Do you think it was the key to Laura's safe deposit box? Just kidding. Yeah. ⁓ my favorite, my favorite property. speaker-1: The ⁓ but wait but so like so w so not only is Catherine and like Ben scheming behind Josie's back, we've got Pete and Josie scheming behind Catherine's back, which is kind of speaker-0: Done to learn. Everyone backstabbing. speaker-1: Yeah. There's yeah, they're on equal footing of ⁓ not being even with each other. But I thought a funny thing that happens in the scene is when ⁓ Catherine finally like snaps a Pete and tells him to go to his own room. speaker-0: You have oil in your head. You know, she just can't like break the facade. She's like, I d I can't anymore. I can't break him. speaker-1: He's been in this room and it they're both in their pajamas. He's like sitting on the bed and cleaning it and and then you find out like he he doesn't actually sleep in this room. I mean like he sleeps like somewhere completely different. Yeah. He leaves and we see Jo Josie uses that key to open up some kind of secret space. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. And she sees the accounting books that were new books. I think in last week's episode or even maybe even the pilot. See that, you know, she that what the reference Catherine had made to Ben about like, you know, the the the widow better not find out about the creative accounting I've been doing. Right. So and we see we see sort of the you know, the duplicity there. speaker-1: And then we go, we have our check-in at the Palmer's. speaker-0: ⁓ yes. And this is, you know, I this is a tough scene. This this scene is really devastating and and pretty perfect where you just, you know, what are you feeling when you see sort of this is the first time we really see, I think, the unraveling of Lee Win, right? Yeah. We've been led to believe that it's sort of Sarah that's coming apart. But then we really this sort of reframes it and changes how you've been seeing this character. speaker-1: Yeah, it's almost like he's he's been trying to be strong for her, maybe. And and I don't know if maybe he th like maybe she was sleeping or something like that, and then he he puts the music on and he lets it all out. ⁓ it's it's a really sad he puts the music on and you see him pick up the picture of Laura and start dancing with it and it it makes me imagine like him dancing with his daughter. speaker-0: Yeah, father daughter dance or I don't Yeah. Yeah. speaker-1: wedding or something. Yeah. And that and that's like broke my heart to to watch and imagine that. Like you don't think that you're gonna not gonna get to dance with your daughter again sometime and you start doing like you just hold a picture of her and wish that you were dancing with her again. speaker-0: It's very devastating. It's a devastating scene. Very done just you know, I think it's pretty perfect. It's done really effective. And of course, you know, we get to work in a Sarah scream, which is and she sort of gives a voice to what everyone's thinking. It's sort of like, What's going on in this house? You know what I mean? Like what is and it it is. It's just like what is happening? speaker-1: Like she sees she seems a bit more lucid and clear headed in that scene than she has been in the past. Yeah, her but yeah, we get her screaming and Leland crying, and that's something that yeah, h his him crying is a is a big thing in in later episodes. But ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. Then we get our birth flash of the black lodge. We've been waiting for it, right? So maybe set the scene. How do we how do we get taken to the lodge? speaker-1: Well, we so it's ⁓ it's the end of the day, Cooper Cooper's feeling pretty good, I think. He's he's got some ideas, some leads, and Albert is is in town on the forensics. So if and Cooper seems to be in a good space as he goes to sleep, and then his his dream begins. And this is I mean, th we get a lot of th th this is where it kind of starts to div the international version. speaker-0: version of the pilot is the ending of the yep. This was the ending of the Europilot, right? So this is where you see it's your setup and how they work it in. speaker-1: And we it's there's a lot of lot of images flash by. Like there's things we've seen before that he Cooper hasn't seen, like Sarah running down the stairs of the house. That's not a moment that like Cooper was privy to. And seeing Bob behind the bed again. And we get we get we see the one on man. speaker-0: With your pole. Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, we get the that incantation that he's that we and we And we saw those words on that on that torn piece of paper at the at the crime scene. But this this is the first time I think we hear the the whole thing. I love the the wording in it. I there's something this is just something very just very compelling. I don't know, the the through the darkness of future past the magician longs to see. speaker-0: Walk with me. Yeah. speaker-1: One chance out between two worlds, firewalk with me. speaker-0: Just that delivery of the fire walk with me line. It just it really it really slaps. Every time you watch it, it's it still thugs. You know, it's still thugs. Yeah. Talk about talk about like the noise of the heartbreaking, like the the enhanced audio. It's just like that just something about the way that lands is just like speaker-1: ⁓ and that this I'm almost I mean, I don't know if do we are we gonna for the podcast discuss ⁓ the ⁓ international pilot or speaker-0: Yeah, we could probably do that as a we'll we'll do that as a fun. Yeah, maybe we'll do that at the end, right? At the end of season one or w we could do it or season two because hence the spoilers, although kinda not really, but I you know, this is kind of the first time we meet this cadre of like people that we we learned they lived above a convenience store. Their names were Mike and Bob, which is like used with The Simbahead, right? speaker-1: Bonus. Yeah. speaker-0: You know, Mike is his sort of he tore off his arm because that's where Bob had tattooed him with Evil and he he ripped his arm off to to sort of put an end to the to the killing. But Bob will kill again and and Bob is sort of, you know, basically the devil, right? Is is this this Bob character. We don't really know what's happening totally, right? Like and maybe still thirty five years later we we never totally know, but yeah. ⁓ we just get a sense of sort of like these are spirits from another realm and what w they they were evil together and one of them you know, stopped stopped engaging in the evil, but this other one is sort of like the devil. speaker-1: Still doing it, yeah. And the and the it's the ⁓ the international pilot, there's definitely this sequence is more like played out, I think, if I remember correctly. But it's right now we're just getting kind of glimpses of it that feel disconnected in a certain way that are it's as if they're talking to the camera, kinda like they're like the both Bob and the one armed man. I mean it's like they're talking to Cooper and it's as if in his dream he's traveled to their realm. They're addressing him. But that's like w one part of the dream. And then it shifts to in the the red room. speaker-0: Well we see the circle of twelve candles blow out, right? Okay. Circle of twelve candles. It almost was giving me like the craft. Remember that movie? ⁓ so good. It's still good. Fruiza Balk and and Nev Candle. So good. Yeah. But it is, it gives it sort of like that that incantation we've just heard about a magician. These candles evolve this circle of candles go out and then we are taken to the Black Lodge. speaker-1: ⁓ yeah. I watched that recently. Yeah. Sh she's amazing in that. She's Yeah. And we have and ⁓ Cooper is now old. Like he's there's like ⁓ he's got some old man makeup on. and we get to see Laura here looking looking beautiful, but we're told that she's not Laura. Uh-huh. Which is like a the for some reason in my memory it was that she was Laura's cousin, but it's actually the speaker-0: She is my cousin. A man from another place is cousin. And let's not forget where he gives the iconic let's roll in. It's just like, you know, and and just treats us to some real disco dancing moves that are like really rivaling, you know, John Tribolton center. Really giving giving us disco. But we got the little man and and we've got some cryptic sayings and we've got a very beautiful funeral Laura. speaker-1: His c yeah. Yeah. speaker-0: And then old Dale. And so wha how are you kind of feeling when you're pulled into this? Because it's to me it's just ⁓ one of the most powerful scenes of the whole series still in this last kind of speaker-1: one of the overall shades of it is the fact that the the way that they're speaking is ⁓ and like Cooper speaks normal, but both Laura and the what do you what do you refer to him as? The man from another place? They are but the when they were filming it, they they spoke backwards. Uh-huh. And then they reversed it. Do you know do you know about this? Yeah. Like the yeah, so it's like a it's a really odd sounding and to the point that they have to have subtitles on just to make sure that you can speaker-0: Man from another place. Could have been a woke. ⁓ speaker-1: Understand, but they say so many when he says, ⁓ I've got good news that gum you like has gotten good to come back in style. That's the speaker-0: I love that. ⁓ you know that's a the prom that is the teaser when season three was coming out. speaker-1: Yeah. Exactly. I was just gonna Yeah, yeah. 'Cause it's it'cause how perfect is and then there's the twenty five year thing here though, do they? speaker-0: Can't remember that might be in the end. That might be like Laura and speaker-1: There but there yeah, there's so many riddles in this th scene and allusions to things and some stuff will be made clear in the future, I believe. But the whole her arms being bent backwards and ⁓ you get the there's the silhouette of I don't if it looks like ⁓ like a bird or an angel, like the silhouette that goes across the curtain. And Cooper's just there, kind of like taking it all in. It made me think of have you seen ⁓ 2001 Space Odyssey? The the end the end of that. speaker-0: Yes. And speaker-1: ⁓ the guys in that sp and he and you see him aging throughout it and he's there's he's just kind of like s there observing and sitting there and there were shots of Cooper here where it was r making me think of that where he's just watching the stuff and speaker-0: It was also giving me the vibe of remember that commercial from the eighties that I can't remember it was for a cassette dig where it's like a guy sitting in a room and he's getting back by the music. Yeah. It was giving me a little bit of that vibe. speaker-1: I it was ⁓ is that Memorex? Is it live or is it ⁓ Memor X? ⁓ speaker-0: Yes. Yes. speaker-1: I used to have I used to have a I used to have a poster of that on my wall. speaker-0: It's fucking cool. I mean it's so cool, right? And this is also where we get Laura's iconic upside down snap where we learn more about what that means in our walk with May when we see her in the pink room. No spoilers. It's a it's a cool scene. It's a really cool scene. speaker-1: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah. So there's a lot of dancing in this episode too, between Audrey getting up and dancing in the diner, Leland dancing, and then this guy dancing here. And it ⁓ when I was watching this this part of the way he starts 'cause he was saying how there's always music in the air and then the music comes speaker-0: And then speaker-1: Yeah. And he just gets up and starts and I mean I know it's because they filmed it the way they did with the reverse thing, the way he gets up, it's almost as if he can't even he's not even in control of the fact that he's just compelled to dance. ⁓ it made me feel it 'cause I was wondering when Audrey's dancing at the double R diner, like what's in her what's going on in her head right now with why she's doing it and then this here made me feel like is it's as if the the dancing is just c they're being compelled to dance in some in some way. speaker-0: Well, and we can talk about it in in in spoilers in just a moment about something ⁓ Audrey, a callback to that moment and to what you're saying that resonates. But we end it with Laura walks over and gives him a kiss and then whispers a secret in his ear, and then he kind of bolts awake, right? With Ben having that like I, as someone who use hair joke, can really relate to, right? That sort of like the real end, you know, he's got a block of seagulls, bedhead. So how about that ending? You know, he calls Truman and what, right? Calls him an speaker-1: ⁓ thinking that we have. Yeah. So he's saying that he knows who killed Laura Palmer, which is a surefire way to get the audience to come back next week 'cause here we go, I guess. speaker-0: For sure. I bet the audience I will often check, but I bet it increased week over week from that 'cause people are like that. speaker-1: I love how the I love how we can't hear what Truman I think he's calling Truman. We can't hear what Truman's saying on the other l side of the phone call, but ⁓ Cooper's in like, no, it can wait till morning. Like 'cause Trudan just says can't you just tell me now? speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah. speaker-1: And then but the and then the music music come we start hearing music on the soundtrack again, but then also like Cooper all of a sudden starts like snapping to the music. And again it feels like this this is like coming over him in a way with speaker-0: You're right. He's snapping to it and it's like it's it's breaking that wall a bit of being like No, similar to the the scene with Ben and Audrey a couple of episodes ago, you don't know if if it's playing for us or if it's playing for them, you know. speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And then we Yeah, so there's it ends on a very exciting note. And then we get that we you mentioned earlier how the end credits usually it has a the picture of Laura in this episode it's the the guy dancing. speaker-0: So good. I'm telling you, he was giving like John Tremult to Saturday Night Beatles, Olivia Newton, John and Xana do real show dancing realness. No, it was pretty much a perfect episode of TV or or a perfect film even. You know, it's it's a great ⁓ it stands on its own, even if you never watch the rest of it. speaker-1: I'd like I'd like to think that when they were editing it together that there was some excitement among the people putting it together be like, like, we've got something really speaker-0: Yeah. Well, look, on that note, if you don't want to hear spoilers, jump off and say goodbye to us now and talk to us next week. But if you do, let's give a little spoiler time to me. What you're saying about them being compelled to dance really resonates in season three where we see that Audrey, we don't really know what's happened other than like you get the sense that she's gone insane, right? That and and and but she's doing Audrey's dance in her yeah in her head in real life, in an at a roadhouse, like, you know, transported by Julie Cruz's voice. Who the fuck knows, right? Something's going down with it. But you do she even doing it or is she being compelled? And I I hadn't really given it that much thought, other than I just kind of was like, ⁓ it's great to see Audrey's dance again. But then when you look at that, it's sort of like how much agency did she even have over doing it? Or or do any of them have over or you know, when they're kind of moving. speaker-1: Yeah, because we know that there's yeah, there's there's there's spirits all around this this place that's that's affecting people. But the Audrey's story so season three, they've only watched it the once. And so the there's so many storylines where you're watching, you're like, I don't know where this is going. And and you don't know when it ends, you don't know that it's ended yet until this like this season's over. So Audrey in particular was one where her last scene in the in the third season, I was like, is there gonna be something else now after this? To like and then you find out like, nope, but never went back to her again. I was speaker-0: disappointed by the lack of Audrey screen time, which like for whatever reason that was the party wrote her or that was the part that David w envisioned and Mark wrote her. And that was just the part that ⁓ she was available for. Whatever the reason, it's just like I felt like, ⁓ I'm I but you know what, maybe it's good to leave you wanting more. I just wanted I always want to see more Audrey. I love that. speaker-1: I forget if we talked about this. Was the there was something with the was wasn't the original idea behind Mulholland Drive was a s was like an Audrey story? speaker-0: Is that right? I didn't know that. speaker-1: I feel like I heard I can check that it look it up, but there was an idea of Audrey going to Hollywood or something like that and it it evolved into what it eventually became, I think. Hopefully I'm not completely wrong and if anyone's listening to this they'll be like speaker-0: But I was out you know, out of town and and we have kids and families and and yeah that was easy. But that would have been that would have been amazing. Maybe you know, maybe someday they'll do Lost Highway or Firewalk with me while I'm getting scars. That'll be worth it. Whatever spoilers jumped out at you. speaker-1: Well one thing just ⁓ we talked about a little bit with Albert, how we get in se he I think it's in season two when Truman like is like, Okay, enough is enough of this and there's been like some physical stuff going on between Yeah. Albert reveals that behind everything is his love and all this stuff and they it they take his his role and everything and his connection to people to a different level. And I I liked that a lot when I when I speaker-0: Then they become friends. speaker-1: went there. So now when so when it goes back to the way he's being a jerk, you know that it's it's not just gonna be like one note the whole time. Yeah. And he there's some good writing with in his speaker-0: Because in real life people can be like that, right? So I thought that's cool. Like the you get through the salty exterior and people, you know, you can realize a different thing about someone. speaker-1: Yeah. And then one other thing I was I was thinking about with with Leo. there was a fun like where Leo and Bobby talking about Laura and and then and Leo comments, Laura was a wild girl. And Bobby says, Tell me about it and I feel like he's saying it in a way where he's like, Yeah, tell me about I know she was a wild girl and but then Leo says, Maybe someday as I'm like, Maybe someday I'll tell you about it. 'Cause I and I assume the he's speaker-0: ⁓ yeah. speaker-1: I don't remember Firewalk with me as well as you do. I'm gonna be re watching it obviously very soon. ⁓ y but but I mean we do learn on the show that like that Leo was or was at least for part of the night that she died, he was speaker-0: He was there. He was there. Him and Jacques Renault. Basically, Leo, you know, they were having this wild kind of orgy and he tied the girls up and something happened. I think that I don't know. I think that shock went out to go to the you know, take a leak, and then I think, you know, the killer smacked him and knocked him out and Leo heard a noise and maybe took off. Like something happened to spook Leo. But you know, they were up to no good. Like they had these girls died on bound, like It was not just like your average night at the cabin. speaker-1: It's funny watching Leo in these earlier episodes while also watching the later episodes of season two and how much his role changes. Like he's this real threatening, menacing shark right now. And then he gets speaker-0: We get started to reek. Did you watch Game of Thrones? speaker-1: Yeah. Yeah. I was thinking about that while we were speaker-0: Yeah. You know what I mean? Yeah. Which was Windamoral is no Ramsey Bolton. I'm sorry. Ramsey Bolton was scary. ⁓ I think Windows ridiculous. But you know Michael. speaker-1: But it's fun I don't know, there's because that there's so many characters, it's you can rewatch stuff and start to like kinda think about characters that you w hadn't maybe thought about so much but like other times you watch the show. Leo is definitely not high on my list of people that I've curious about while watching when I the first times that I've watched the show. but the more I watch it, the more I like appreciate how much he's tied into things and and how much he's set up as a suspect and speaker-0: He's a he's a red herring for sure, but like a convincing one that they lean into, right? And then and then in some ways Josie's a red herring. She's ⁓ kind of a you know, a mobster a little bit, right? But like a criminal criminal woman, but like not a killer or anything. And and almost just sort of like by happenstance kept landing in trouble, you know. So it's sort of ⁓ it she's devious, but it also feels like a little bit of a victim too. Like you do feel some empathy for her when her arc finishes. But You know, the two of them for sure are red herrings. They try to take us down, right down to the letter J, you know. Almost like the fish in the proverbial coffee, you know. Throwing off our game. speaker-1: And now so the next episode. Okay. Wow. speaker-0: The funerals. And I just started watching it tonight to sort of get into the mode for next week. And it's also a good one. But I this one is b is really this is my favorite episode. speaker-1: The one we just the one we just discussed? speaker-0: Yeah. I just love it. I really do. But the funeral one is really good. And I'll talk more about my feelings about that next week. Friends, family, twins, lovers, tune in and talk to us next week. Have a good night. speaker-1: Bye everyone. speaker-0: Peter
