speaker-0: Hello friends. It's it's your boys Nick T and Chris Z welcoming you back to another slice, episode three, where we will be discussing episode one. Well, really, I you know, it gets modulated differently. Yes, because there's pilot and then some, you know, loyalists will then call this episode one, but that is you know, it's kind of listed on Streamers as episode two, but Chris was actually just sharing some fun intel with me ⁓ about the naming convention that I didn't realize even as a Twin Peaks frost lynch nerd. So you wanna share share with those listening? ⁓ that kinda was kind of fun. speaker-1: Yeah, hey everyone. Well while I was in one of the many like rabbit holes that you go in on the show, I was I saw that the the titles that like this one that we're about to talk about is has the title traces to nowhere. But apparently when Lynch and Frost were writing the show and making the show, they just they didn't have titles. It was just episode two, episode three, episode four. And then when the show was being air when it aired in Germany. someone in Germany decided to give titles to the episodes. And so they they titled all the episodes. And then that was translated into English. And eventually over time, CBS started using those titles on the episodes and Paramount was using that. And then the fans just started calling it c referring to the episodes by that. So it kind of stuck. So it's this funny thing where it's it's I mean everyone will refer to this as Traces to Nowhere, but you can Some people might call it episode one and some people might call it episode two. So it can be a little confusing. But speaker-0: You know what? I think it would have been a little more interesting if it had been the Norwegians that had made us because that I feel like we we owed them a dead gratitude for this for some of some of the antics. So I you know, that might have that might have hit even harder. But also worth talking about something that we realize we didn't mention is that, you know, it's probably worth noting the pilot episode, North Northwest Passage, which we think was you know at one point was supposed to be the name of the entire series. That was Chris and I's understanding of it. That was directed by Lynch and written by Frost and Lynch. I think all of the episodes of this season were written by Frost and Lynch of season one. But so here we are at episode one or two, Traces to Nowhere, written by them, but we're handing directing duties over. So may maybe you want to tell us a little bit about the director. speaker-1: Yeah, the this guy, Dwayne Dunham, he was an editor. He's he's directed some things, but he was an editor who he edited the pilot and he edit a f edited a few films for he did the Blue Velvet for for Lynch and Wild at Heart. And he also did Retruno the Jedi. ⁓ yeah. And I think I think there was some sort of thing where he I think he wanted the in order to get him to keep working on something, they they offered him a the opportunity to direct an episode of Twin Peaks. So he believe the directing of this episode was his first directing credit. But he clearly was tight with Lynch in terms of his his his his style and all that. So it it it feels of a piece I think with with the other stuff that speaker-0: Yeah. ⁓ It does it feels like them. It feels consistent with w it doesn't feel like some of the episodes in in the back half of season two where, you know, it doesn't it feels a little more jarring. This is pretty consistent stylistically, although I sort of wish that he could have sweet talked Lynch and Frost, you know, even his Jedi his Jedi I mean, you know, the man from another place. It could have easily been a Wookiee. ⁓ share an anecdote from my week that, you know, being haunted by Twin Peaks, my very dear friend at work had a a a bit of an accident where she tore off her fingernail this week. It was yeah really awful super bandaged up finger looking kind of comically like an episode of Sex in the City where Miranda like slices her thumb off. It's like that was very you know evocative imagery of her on the Zoom, but I couldn't help but think of that scene with Coop. And Laura where he's digging under her nail. And I told I told my friend. I was like, I I was like, honestly, I I I can't talk about this because it's making me think of this really horrific scene from Twin Peaks. And and this is even worse because that actually happened. I'm grateful you're alive. And you know, and we're just talking about your nail, but it was like completely conjuring that image for me. So it was like my my my getting a little too real with Twin Peaks. speaker-1: Yeah. ⁓ speaker-0: It was literally, you know, bleeding in. So all right. Well ⁓ on that note, look, you you sort of open on the Great Northern as we start this and my life, I don't know about you, instantly felt better. Checking and checking checking out of day to day and and into the Great Northern. So what what do you think of our, you know, the introduction of our favorite FBI agent and our in our favorite hotel heiress as she sort of saunters into breakfast? How how are you? speaker-1: Well before the breakfast th I wanted to ask you about the the thing 'cause we see him he's upside down in his room hanging all the way through the and I I think it's like a fun little quirky thing, but it but ⁓ it so did does he just travel with those things that he can put on his feet to 'cause then he and he fortunately there's a there was like a water pipe an exposed water pipe. speaker-0: Yeah, of course. Yeah. Yeah, and he's just hanging upside down. Which straps like what straps were those? speaker-1: It was it was some weird I'd never seen it before, but some weird contraption that that like could hook onto those things. But it's but yeah, I was like like did he does he just keep those in the trunk of his car when he's so that he can do that every n whenever he needs to hang upside down. speaker-0: down. And opened with a mystery that unlike the mystery of Laura Palmer, which has been solved ish in the lexicon, the mystery of what happened with Marilyn Monroe and McKennedy still unclear. Yeah. Yeah still unclear as he is sort of reciting to Diane. It's you know, it's sitting with him and you know, it's it's sitting with all of us. We still don't know. But speaker-1: Laura like the and her death and the townspeople or the other, that kinda I guess stirred up his thoughts about Marilyn Monroe and and the Kennedys. speaker-0: Yeah. A bombshell used by powerful men. You can kinda you can see the correlation, right? But yeah, Ian Ian, let's not forget like kind of the loving panorama around the really woodsy kitschy decor. That's something I do kind of make a note of that, you know, it is, you know, we've talked about this when you're watching it to try to then recount it. You you just drink in some different details. And I was like, He really they really just kind of paid loving attention to like The more the kitschiness of the the that kind of you know, that that vibe. They really wanted you to feel it. speaker-1: Yeah, making kinda yeah, slipping you into into it. speaker-0: And slipping into the dining room becomes our favorite hotel heiress. speaker-1: We've got Audrey. The it's f it's also fun to look at her hair over the course of and how like the longer it gets over just the course of a couple days, even if I'm speaker-0: Uhhuh. I think the reality of of pilot to to shooting of series, right? But yeah. I mean and and I do like her hair better like this. I I am a fan of this sort of this this Audrey look. speaker-1: Yeah, it's a good it's a good length for her. The he eats like so much food. speaker-0: So much I wish I had Coop's metabolism. speaker-1: Your you're you're you're the metabolism of a bumblebee, was it with the Yeah. speaker-0: Ref meanwhile I have like the metabolism of Laura Palmer's corpse. And you know, we've got Coop here just devouring meal after meal and donut after donut and piece of pie and piece of pie. Yeah, God God bless him. speaker-1: But yeah, this so this is when Cooper and Audrey meet for the first time, I guess. And we yeah, and she she it's funny is we we see him, he's talking he's upside down talking to Diane, he's talking about Marilyn Monroe, he's ordering breakfast, and finally th through Audrey we get to like get back into the Laura Palmer mystery 'cause like that's where we've we sh her name gets brought back up into into everything. Not for very long though, because Audrey seems to almost like ping pong with her like her thought like thoughts about like well he was she was tutoring my brother to he's got emotional problems that run in the family and then just like what do you think of my ring and speaker-0: I loved it. I loved it. So like you just I think that's really right. She's almost like a bumblebee. And then you just no, metabolism of bumblebee. There's definitely bumblebee imagery there, but she isn't sort of like just you know, is it that she's nervous because, you know, this guy's handsome and she's got a little crush instantly and she's just kind of bouncing, trying to be flirty. I don't know, but she does. It's it's she's, you know, an eccentric woman from moment one. speaker-1: It's just all over. What's the the do your palms ever itch when she says that? Is that have you heard that in something before? 'Cause no, she says that in a way where she's Yeah, yeah. I've heard that like she says it in a way where she's kind of like insinuating speaker-0: Yeah, I don't know. She's like hot. Yeah. Like something so you know, something a little something, something. Something, a little, something, something there. But yeah, I mean she she definitely had the heat turned up to an eleven. Yeah. Just put it that way, you know. And then they pivot where where do we want the sheriff and his crew with their donuts when we sort of saunter from the hotel. speaker-1: Yeah, like a horny horniness. speaker-0: We and and this also reminded me that, you know, just to to pump my girl Kesha, who was touring and was in town last week, right when I was watching this episode and they had all the donuts stacked up, they were running a Kesha promotion at Voodoo Donuts and offered a pink glazed donut called Your Love Is My Glaze. So I bought a dozen. Yeah, I really wanted to patronize the Kesha themed donut, but so as I watched their stack of donuts, I myself indulged in a pink frasted donut. So I was I was skin the mode. speaker-1: Yeah. They're all stuff in their mouths. speaker-0: That's it, I mean it's so funny. It's so I I love that scene actually. I really do. And we kind of what we we get, you know, we hear from Doc Heywood talking about sad state of affairs though with Laura, she had sex with three men in twelve hours, bite marks, legions, numerous shallow wounds. Renette looked like same perpetrator, just sad. So how how are you feeling as we're kind of, you know, taking that in? speaker-1: Well, I mean and the the scene opens with Doc Hayward talking about how he was the town doctor long enough to have delivered more as a baby. So I guess he's he's an obstetrician too. But speaker-0: Yeah. I mean he seems to be on the scene of everything. Yeah. You know? It's like head crawls, mortuary, all of it. speaker-1: going out searching in the woods. But the but it kinda sh it it shows how 'cause he he couldn't handle the autopsy himself because it was he was just too close to it, so he couldn't like stomach. Which kind of sets you up for how grim grim the whole thing is. speaker-0: He's ready. And also generates questions about his role in the medical profession along the lines of Well is his specialty. He's the Jack of Hall trades in town, you know. But yes, he couldn't bear him s to do it and I get it, you know. Yeah. speaker-1: But I also the I I have to confess I so it's his name their name was Hayward. Is that it? And I I always I've always forced to thought it was Hayward. I kept I'd always said like Donna Hayward and Doc it was Hayward it's Hayward, I guess. If I ever say it wrong, I apologize. speaker-0: Yeah. I will not hold it again. Thank you speaker-1: But let's see this in the the this theme it ends with him at commentary on like who would do a thing like that and it's this is like another I feel like the the the writing on the show is is very thought out to like take you from one piece to the next piece and how we get all this information about what happened to her and they mention Ronette but then ending in the scene I'm saying who would do and it and we cut to Leon's truck. speaker-0: Dun dun dun. Everyone's favorite trucker. speaker-1: And then Lee and Shell, like I think you hear Shelly saying Leo. So it's yeah, it's kind of like seeding this idea that like could it be this guy? But speaker-0: And then we just see what an absolute dog he is, you know, forcing you know, it's like forcing his wife to do the laundry. ⁓ did you do the laundry? I already did it. Not all of it throws a sack at her, but you know, his his his misogyny caused him to overlook that. He had a shirt covered in blood in his satchel, which, you know, inopportune and ⁓ you know, obviously wife shocked hides the shirt, which yeah, I get why you would, but also feels not super smart given you know what we're led to believe about. speaker-1: I I was wondering if there was like this impulsive decision on her hide it, but she she's clearly not in a good place. So she probably saw it as a cup. She could maybe do something with that. But that I was wondering th so their washing machine and laundry stuff is all outside the home. What if I was like, what happens when it's when it's raining or snowing though? Like is it is it speaker-0: Maybe so. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. I mean, what about the fact that ha like there's like a definitely a wall of the house that's like plastic wrapped? Yeah. So I'm like, you know, I mean it they they definitely, you know, their their living situation, you know, leaves leaves some things to be desired. Not the best of which is is that Leo is part of the situation. But yeah, I mean it's it I you know, it's meant to definitely convey sort of a rough lower working glass length, I think. speaker-1: Yeah, also. And he the way he mushes her, he like squeezes her cheek in a way like like a like a grown up would do to a little kid. Yeah. But he like ⁓ like some mushes her cheek in such a weird I guess it's just meant to un s like feel like make you unsettled about speaker-0: Yeah. And it does, right? Just has gr like the ways in which he's gross, right? Like it just feels gross and now he's implicated as maybe a suspect in this w you know, rape two women and murder of one of them. And then we see him kind of being this gross misogynist and towards Yeah. They're sort of, you know, they're definitely suggesting some things about his character. speaker-1: Yeah. And then should we we move on to we got our picnic video that we get to look at again? speaker-0: ⁓ we go back to our favorite picnic where you know, we we are back in our favorite pi I actually had that written down, our favorite picnic back in the video. And, you know, we we, you know, James cops to being the one who shoots the video and basically, you know, he we get we get some a little bit of a furtherance of the plot more from James than from Bobby or Donna, where James does no more and talks about how, you know, she had quit drugs recently, but she had And she quit drugs, but she fell off the wagon recently. Something happened. And and here, you know, I have to say if you have the same reaction, it's so interesting seeing the scenes where Bobby and James in particular talk about the that the last couple nights with Laura. And then you I flashed a firewalk with me and I just think about how amazing Cheryl Lee was in that and just the performance of such a tour de force and really You know, I I she just really brought Laura's last week to life, right? And so when you when they see when he describes it, I I picture it and it it's just it really, you know, makes me sad, right? And makes me you know, you remember kind of the she really conveyed a lot of pain in that movie in that last kind of week. So when you're hearing those stories to me, it adds a layer to it, like of of you know, kind of emotion having having seen it played out in that other context. speaker-1: Yeah, I wonder what the if if I I I don't know at what point did Lynch decide to make Firewalk with me. 'Cause 'cause I know he've made it like after the end of season. But yeah, what point he was like 'cause there's so much like wonderful stuff that's like in the show that that you wouldn't necessarily you're not like watching the show and thinking like, ⁓ like if you didn't know there was a movie coming, you wouldn't maybe think. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: There wasn't was gonna be one, but there is so much groundwork being laid that's that's gonna be so wonderful to get to experience. speaker-0: later You know what I think that there is part of it was just the Laura character and maybe the magic Cheryl Lee brought to the role because I even read an interview with Lynch who said he was toying with the idea of a fourth season because he felt like he had a story he wanted to tell about Carrie, ⁓ about someone relatedly that we'll talk about in spoilers because I don't want to but it was someone sort of Laura adjacent that you know we meet in season three. And I just think that Cheryl Lee maybe, you know set his imagination kind of running the same way maybe, you know, originally Isabella Rossellini did with Blue Velvet and then he had originally crafted Josie Packard to be Giovanna Packard. And was and it was gonna be her, right? So definitely I think he had and Laura Dern obviously appears in so many of his things. So he definitely had a a thing where I think maybe some of the sometimes the the role was built around these women that he he knew and admired. Right. So I don't know. I don't know the win, but I'm sure glad he did it, right? Yeah. And you know what? And Cheryl should have gotten an Oscar nomination for this role. And I told her that at the at the event where we, you know, it has to be our our, you know, at least once weekly pitch for the speaking tour. But can I have the opportunity to very briefly speak with her and tell her, you know, that I thought she should be have been nominated for an Oscar for this role. And she said that I was very sweet. And I was like, Yeah, I I'm sweet, but it's accurate. Yeah. Anyway, so speaker-1: She was happy. But well, speaking of of her though and a performance, we've we've we get something with the f there's like a flashback that happened in the midst of the scene where we get to see her, Cheryl talking with with James. And it's a very like it's what yeah, if Cooper asks him what happened on like that day and who has the other half of his heart, and then we all of a sudden get this flashback that's fun, I guess from James's perspective. But the like it's this very ⁓ over the top, like music the music's over the top. performances are kind of over the top. Like there I heard I've heard the saying of with with actors, if they're like there's the thing where they say they're hitting the keys really hard. Do you think in that and that I feel like what like the way that she's delivering the lines and that flashback, it's very like exaggerated, I guess. But I think that's intentional because it's it's this kid's memory of this moment with her. But then with she has you see the heart necklace. speaker-0: Yeah, but speaker-1: Mm. And and she in in the thing she's like snaps it. And I did you ever have one of those heart necklaces? speaker-0: No, but I had seen them from when we were kids like that. The best end like someone the best friend. Yeah. Yeah. I think they were more from like friends. Yeah. speaker-1: 'Cause I I had one of those and and I've seen them and I I don't remember the ever nota seeing them as a thing where like you have to like Yeah. And so that didn't know that 'cause th there's also certain the sound is kind of funny in in that mem in that flashback too. But I was like wondering if they just decided to add the snap to the necklace just for speaker-0: Now. ⁓ just to get a little act. Maybe so. Right. Just ⁓ you know, to kind of I don't know, just get get a reaction, get that you know, everything that they kind of do with this world, textures, sounds, all of it feels intentional, right? speaker-1: Yeah, definitely. But shall we move on to ⁓ speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, well here we go. Mike and Bobby are still in jail, which I forgot about until they were here. I was like, ⁓ sigh, come on. But we find out, you know, we're that we they they have toned their rhetoric down so they are not as intolerable together. And they are we kind of, you know, get the sense that we we we get the backstory on Laura's say deposit box, our favorite our favorite teenage, you know, hijinks. That the and we find that the cash in her safe deposit box was drug money that they owed to Leo. So now we kind of know here that Beavis and Butthead are going to be in trouble. Right. Like they they ⁓ they now owe the the guy that we all know is like resident's gumbag a shit ton of money. And then we kind of, you know, what do we do from there? We we kind of just get that bit of exposition. We hear Donna bonding with her mom about You know, or love for a dead friend's secret boyfriend. I still have a hard time with it, although my feeling on it changes later in the episode, but I'll save it till we get there. ⁓ and and and then we sort of get a little bit of a of a hint to to Ed in Nadine, which which is always a highlight, right? A a Nadine moment. speaker-1: Can I just there's one thing I wanted to say that you just be f just in between the Bobby and Mike in jail to Donna with her mom, we we go back to our picnic video. Yeah, but it's it's a different it's different now because we haven't usually every time we see it, it's always like the characters are watching it on this on like that little monitor and talking about it. In this one, it's it just goes, it just cuts to the picnic. speaker-0: We do again? speaker-1: Video and it's no one no one's watching it. speaker-0: When she says help me. Yeah. ⁓ yeah, there's no cat scene. Okay. Print it. speaker-1: Well what it but there's like sound like you hear you can hear birds and wind and like when they do their high five thing you hear the slap this like and it's like another thing. I don't know if there were sounds before in the speaker-0: No, I think you're right. They're trying to make us almost feel like we're living it. And I think I I didn't even write that down at all because every time I see that scene I always just don't it just doesn't land with me. I don't know why. speaker-1: The is you don't like the when she says help me in the speaker-0: That's the part where it's helped me ⁓ speaker-1: Is it because like that's the thing is like who is like who why are we seeing that? Like what who's no one's watching it? It's like a weird thing with the show is like we're gonna show this now. Like the how much it's you know what I mean by speaker-0: We're breaking the fourth wall a little bit? Maybe. speaker-1: Sort of, yeah. Yeah. ⁓ And then her saying help me, it's like, yeah, who's she communicating to when she's saying help me? Yeah, it's like a later on there's a moment where where Josie says something that made me think of this that moment when when we'll get to it when Truman and Cooper are talking to her. And so I'll I'll I'll reference back to that. But I suppose speaker-0: But you know what too? Kind of putting that spin on it and and thinking about it a little more, I like the interpretation of it, even though I don't particularly love the scene. I think it's the way that they taper voice. I think it's like it's like so it's just not it doesn't sound like Shirley would slow down. So it's like something about it just doesn't I don't love that scene, but I think it she could be talking to all of us and she could be talking to everyone in town because as we spoiler free, but when we get to, you know, her funeral episode, Bobby's sort of out. you know, takes that ⁓ illusion and says it out loud, right? About, you know, people in town knowing her problems. So speaker-1: Okay. ⁓ speaker-0: Yes, hard to heart. speaker-1: What r sort of a random thing I was did we did we say, I can't remember did we talk about that the Donna's mom, that act that the actress was is Zoe De Chanel's mom? Did we talk about speaker-0: ⁓ I don't we did talk about that. speaker-1: That's that's yeah, that's z and then her s I forget what her sister's name is, Zoe De Chanel's sister. But I now like whenever I watch this, I I wind up similar like later in this episode we see Laura's face superimposed over Donna. And whenever I see the mom here, I superimpose Zoe De Chanel's face over 'cause there were sh sh like right now, Zoe De Chanel is like the age that this actress Mary Joe was when they were filming. speaker-0: ⁓ my god, that's crazy to think 'cause I think that maybe 'cause it's she's styled to look so much older. Yeah. Yeah. And and like those are so young in my hair. Yeah. But wait, when you see that scene and her face gets superimposed, did Sarah Palmer's face get superimposed over yours? Like in the scene. I love Sarah Palmer. speaker-1: I start screaming. speaker-0: That's cool. And I didn't know that fun fact. She is a beautiful woman though. I often do think I'm like, that's the actress that plays Eileen is really striking. So it kind of makes sense. speaker-1: What do you call it? Do we ever learn why she in a wheelchair? speaker-0: In a wheelchair? No, but I always like that he did that he did that. I I like that the the two of them, you know, try to incorporate difference in that way. Like that's you know, that's pretty ahead of its time, right? You still don't how many T V shows do you see someone in a wheelchair on that are on today? So speaker-1: Yeah. It's just like a regular normal like speaker-0: Yeah, just part of her talent. Yeah. Dean heading on over to her drape runners. You know, I just ⁓ I I always just enjoy kind of having a a moment with Nadine because she's nuts but also hysterical. She just is a little bit of like always a a levity balance after the kind of heavy, to your point, you know, heart to heart that's heavy with the mom and daughter. And then we had just learned these things about Laura's crime scene and all this stuff. And then you flash forward to this. one eyed woman talking around drink runners and you know, there is twin peaks for you. speaker-1: The do you think she in this scene does Nadine I can't remember if we does she does she suspect or does she know about the affair with between her husband and Norma? speaker-0: Well, I think I think she just ultimately has an resentment and distrust of Norma because they were s school sweethearts before they kinda had this fight and then Yeah. It sort of ended up with Nadine and Norma ended up with Hank Jennings, but it was sort of through like a series of unfortunate events. So you know, I think probably Nadine always is threatened by her a little bit. speaker-1: Yeah. I at first I was wondering during the scene if that if if she suspected but then she kept kinda going and going on her story with the Drape Runners around the but I think this is just this is just how she is towards ⁓ towards Norma. speaker-0: But the ⁓ the ⁓ speaker-1: The by God those things will be quiet now. ⁓ that's a great great great line delivery that she gives there. speaker-0: Sounds good. No, I mean she's great. And do you know, I don't know if you told me this, but do you know ultimately that Nadine and Ed ended up being in that Wes Craven movie, The People Under the Stairs? You told me that, right? Yeah. Yeah. Like that's a cool, that's a cool fun fact that obviously, you know, the the viewership at the time, because like, you know, obviously we don't know how it was received, but that people must have liked them, you know, that coupling for them to have then get Yes. And Wes Craben must have liked them, right? So I speaker-1: I think I think I saw that movie before I saw Twin Peaks, even though it was after Yeah. So I I I didn't pick up on the connection w when I first was watching it, but but later on later in my life I was like, ⁓ my god. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah. And little did you know when you were dialing Freddy's hotline for dollars and pumping money into the you know, into into the West Craven Nightmare on El Street machine, maybe you helped fund people under the stairs. You know, it all comes together. speaker-1: ⁓ we so it was for speaking of Ed Big Ed, we after the we we got he's come to like pick up James from the police station. And there's a few we we get our first mention of I think it's the first mention of Albert, the FBI agent that we'll meet later, but he calls Cooper here. So it's that's also like our first like nation of an of what like of another Some some people have said that they're like, Is Cooper really with the FBI? Or cause it's just he's he's so quirky and comes in and he's talking to the state recorder and you're like But but with Albert I feel like it's confirmation. Yes, there's more of the connection to speaker-0: To the real to the real institution. It's also our first reference to the bookhouse boys. Exactly. You know, they obviously that plays an an important role. We hear, you know, this is a job ⁓ meaning protection from the bookhouse boys. Basically, you know, James and Big Ed, I I believe are talking about how, you know, James kinda has Mike and Bobby after him now and is gonna need some extra protection. And so we hear, you know, reference to the bookhouse boys. speaker-1: I know which and it's funny. They have their little hand gesture that they speaker-0: ⁓ huh. Yeah. They're in the restaurant. speaker-1: And then we've got Cooper and Schuman interrogating Bobby and Mike. There's two references to detectives in the scene where so Cooper tells Bobby and Mike they can leave. They're free to go. But as they're on their way out, he stops them and says, ⁓ fellows, one more thing. Which is the like Columbo would ⁓ would do that. It was the usually he was the one leaving the room and then he'd stop and say, ⁓ one more thing. ⁓ speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: So there's that and then at the end of the scene, Truman comments about how he feels like Doctor Watson ⁓ alongside Cooper's Sherlock Holmes. So there's a little fun detective references. speaker-0: Yeah, it's some like but that's I didn't get the Colombo one, but I did obviously the Watson one was little more on the nose, but I like that. speaker-1: Do you have you ever read the scripts for the or looked at the scripts for this for the show? Yeah. I've I've I've I s for this for what we're doing now, I was like, let me I'm gonna like look at a few things in the script. And ⁓ I'll I'll mention some stuff I guess throughout this, but it's fun to see the differences that like for like the Cooper doing the Colombo reference, like the one more thing, that's not in the script. But the like the Dr. Watson thing is. And then there's there's other things that are speaker-0: Interesting. speaker-1: That are different in the script that are that are kind of fun to see. speaker-0: ⁓ now I'm gonna have to look too because I like that. I like being able to do you know, it's fun to also see where they improvised, right? Yeah. What kind of came in the moment? Well, and speaking of of coming into the moment, here we we we rejoin our our very interesting triple of ⁓ Catherine, Pete, and Josie at the ⁓ at the at the Martel house, right? So we we basically have what? Now we have Coop and Harry arriving. ⁓ to question, I guess, Josie, right? And so I don't I don't I don't think Catherine's in the scene at all. I think it's just Pete he's he's peting and making them fresh coffee. Josie's looking gorgeous a and and then we kind of start settling in to see the ac i interaction. What are you thinking as you start seeing the interaction between these four characters? speaker-1: Well let's see here. There's a few there's a few things that ha happen in here is A speaker-0: Great. Cooper picked up on something. Are you back? There we go. There you are. Microphone hijinks. speaker-1: But Cooper speaker-0: We're so excited to talk about Josie and the fish in the kettle. speaker-1: The Josie that Cooper picks up on that Josie and Truman have are having or s are a couple. speaker-0: Yeah. So Aaron's how long you been seeing her? speaker-1: Are there is there anything that ha like does does he ever does Kyle McLaughlin ever show in the scene when he picked up on that? I 'cause I I never noticed or is it just speaker-0: I didn't see it. I more was paying attention to be like what were the tells from Harry and he's instantly enamored with her. Although I think probably most people in town who interact with Josie are a little probably like that. You know, she's so beautiful and rich and from you know different. But he he definitely if you watch him, you can register almost from moment one the way he just looks at her with you know. Su such affection. I I could see that bit. I didn't notice the Cooper bit until he just kinda turned and was like, So how long you been seeing her? speaker-1: And then the another thing was the you mentioned the fish and the percolator yeah. Which is like a speaker-0: There's a there's in the purple ⁓ speaker-1: the most famous lines of the shit. What's your so I've like done some research into into this, but d what's your take on how that fish got into that percolator? speaker-0: All I can think of is that Pete was scaling and Peting, you know, doing his thing. Mine was in a zillion different places and here's the door kinda come and and and you know, put goes to put fish down and and one of them kind of plops in. Sort of like I you can't help but maybe do a little bit of the logistics in your hand, you'd be like, How did a fish end up in the coffee pot? All I can think of is absent minded Pete scaling fish and something went flying, but I don't know, unclear. Do you have a more logistical play? speaker-1: The thing that I didn't notice until I was like on Reddit and reading around is that when Cooper and Truman show up, Josie tells Pete, I'll make a fresh pot of coffee. speaker-0: ⁓ which which you're right, I'll put on a fresh pot of Joe. speaker-1: Yeah, which suggests that she's put it in there. speaker-0: Interesting. speaker-1: And then that was the case, is like, was it a like was it the like an accident like you were describing where it kind of just happened to slip in? Or what did she put it in there on purpose for some strange reason? We we we eventually find out some some stuff about her that's like way later in the show that you're like it when in vi in hindsight you start to question things, but I never noticed her like she like picks up there. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: And so she'll put on the next she'll put on the fresh pot. speaker-0: ⁓ isn't that interesting? And did you see anything in the script? Was it addressed that way? Well I I I wonder, you know, you you sort of wonder. speaker-1: I I didn't I should I'll check. The the I know in the script one thing that was different in the scene was that Josie has a dog apparently. And like and like Cooper goes to pet the dog and it starts and Truman warns him not to pet it or speaker-0: Uh-oh. ⁓ Yeah. Well, you know what I do sort of know when you talk about things from like Josie foreshadowing is I always think about, you know, spoiler free, but I always think a lot about when they discover Laura's body, ⁓ her and her big Virgo. Because that's play play a role later on. So in terms of the seed that are planted, what you do find out. speaker-1: Yeah, that he knows about the dog. speaker-0: Some of the things about Josie, maybe maybe she was trying to slip Koopa Fish, although speaker-1: Well, I guess yeah, it there's a question of her if she was trying to s sabotage the speaker-0: Need something. Yeah. Just to yeah, make it so that she doesn't get questioned. You know what I mean? It's valid. I mean, because you don't know. She just is is uncomfortable. And we, you know, kind of find out why a little bit, right? We're we're maybe led to believe she had some relationship with Laura, although, you know, it doesn't feel like it's one that could have made her the killer, but we do sort of get this very, you know, that the this statement that Laura left her with, where she she sort of says, like, We didn't have a heart to heart, but she did say, and I think this is that you were referencing where Laura said, you know, now I know how you must have felt when your husband died. And yeah, that's a pretty, you know, a gut punch of a lion, especially coming from a seventeen year old, right? So it it stayed with with Josie and I think it's probably meant to stay with us. speaker-1: Well she and she says just she can't help hearing it in her head, quote, like some haunting melody. Her saying that. Did you say that already just now? It's like it's a like the the like some haunting melody. I I was like, ⁓ that's 'cause her saying help me felt like a haunting like kind of thing too. So I said her connection to that. speaker-0: Yeah. No, like it was It's a good tie back. Yeah. And it is sort of like I can't help but hearing it over in my head like a haunting melody. And then, you know, even more sort of to your point, if it's a callback to that, it's like then was she talking to Josie? I mean, is it is it meant to be like a little bit of a clue or an insinuation to her? Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah. Lots of lots of maybes and who knows. speaker-0: And we're still talking about thirty five years later. That's a well written show, right? So speaker-1: But we we go to so I so Catherine calls in the midst of all of that to talk to Josie about like all the money that they lost at the mill by shutting it down the day before. But then and then we see Catherine and Ben Hoare in this hotel room. speaker-0: You see her toasting a mystery stranger and it's like you instantly know, and it's a it's just a recurrent theme through this entire series. All bumpy roads lead back to to Benhorn. Yeah. Never do well businessman who like if there's a bumpy, dusty, bad road, somehow he he he's on it or at the at the apex of it. speaker-1: The it's fun I I when I was watching when j when she's talking to Josie on the phone at first, Catherine you I didn't realize that she's like unbuttoning her her shirt while she's talking. And then and then we when we come back at the here like that she's they're now like they've already had sex. See where she's like naked and wrapped up in a sheet and he's getting dressed already. But we we find out a little bit more about this this some scheming between her and speaker-0: But speaker-1: And bad. speaker-0: And it's sort of the, you know, initial spark, as it were, that we hear about burning the mill. Right. This is the first time that's sort of like right, you know, like what is it like the the the checkouts gun? Is it is it you know, like you just put the gun in scene in scene one, expect it's gonna be used before the end. So here we here we hear a plot to burn the mill for for insurance money. And of course the heat between Catherine and Ben is enough to start the fire. I'm like, you know, I you you can't just laugh the way they set the two of them up. It's like, you know, this meant to be this hot and heavy romance, but it's just a li it's so overraw but speaker-1: Kissing kissing the kissing the toes. speaker-0: Yeah. Yeah, like well they're sipping champagne. Yeah. But hey, you know, we we get the point, right? speaker-1: What do you call it? The have you s have you seen the movie Care speaker-0: Yes, which is Carrie's mouse. Uh-huh. speaker-1: Piper Laurie. I feel like what there was that and then have you said what about the movie Dream a Little Dream? Have you seen that was like one of my favorites when I was speaker-0: ⁓ I love that movie. Two when I was a kid with the guy Jason Robarts, which is yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, with the with the two quarries. speaker-0: Was Piper Laurie, what was she like the wipe or something in that one? I don't remember her. Got it. Yeah. That is a an excellent movie. But that sort of we talked about that with part one of the pilot is just like this show really attracted some, you know, maybe slightly past their day movie stars, but like real talent, you know, same with Ben and Dr. Jacoby and i r you know, Lynch and Frost were really able to attract some Hollywood speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, she was Jason Robards' speaker-0: heavier weights than you would usually see on network T V, which probably also was cool for people. speaker-1: Definitely. Do is this where we now we go to Donna visiting Sarah? speaker-0: We do flash forward, which, you know, any scene with Sarah always worth always worth the watch. But yeah, we you know, she's devastated. Donna comes in and, you know, we we see her, she sees Laura's head on on Donna's body. She's ⁓ so but at the start way of setting it up to be like, ⁓ she's delusional because who else do we see? speaker-1: ⁓ yeah, we see this is where we get a killer killer mob. speaker-0: We only get our introduction to Killer Bob, you know, that the the man, the myth, the legend. And so, you know, it's kinda introduced in a way that we don't know. Like, is she even lucid? Is this real? speaker-1: Yeah, these visions that she's having. There's two so once at the start of the scene, we this establishing shot outside the house, the Palmer House. And I took a screen grab that I wanted to just show you that I thought was cool where you see that the house and there's like a tree with its branches that it looks like it's like dark these dark fingers like reaching down to grab at the house. Let me see. speaker-0: ⁓ that is good. Sure, purposeful. Right. You know, sure purposeful. And you remember something interesting. The house is different from the house that they end up using in Firewalk with Maine. And I think even in season two, we'll have to pay closer attention, but they ended up, you know, it it it just they they shot in a different location for maybe the back half of the series and for the movie, which so if you watch closely at one point the Palmer House, it always looks like that White House kind of framed that way, but speaker-1: I'm shocked. speaker-0: I I think it this beginning portions it almost looks like it's on a lake or something. I'm not sure, but then Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. speaker-1: Just like some differences, yeah. And then did I I know we talked about the how do you see Bob in the mirror at the end of the pilot just to show you? I took took another screen grab. This is let's see if I can get it. speaker-0: There he is. Yes. And there it is. And that's like so subtle, Chris. And I had never I had not noticed that for all of my watches until you pointed that out. And then I did go back and I saw him. But yeah, it's very I mean, plain and spinny, right? But then for for those of us with, you know, a an eye more like mine and less like yours, right? They they give us the big reveal of like, okay, here's the dude. Yeah. speaker-1: And this is another different side in the script where so this scene starts with Leland Palmer like brings Donna in to see Sarah and he tells her to like like don't try not to upset her. Kind of the script, it's a nurse who's with Sarah, and she gives her some sort of s like sedative, and then she's the the nurse tells Donna, like don't don't upset her and brings her over. And then when Sarah has her vision of speaker-0: I mean in speaker-1: Bob, he's in like a hospital hallway or something like that. Yeah. Whereas here it's Leland and then it's and you see he's he's in the Laura's bedroom in this vision, right? He's behind her bed. speaker-0: ⁓ interesting. Yeah. He's behind the bed. Well, you know what that makes sense because if and you know, not to get ahead and we'll talk next week about, you Zen or or how to catch a killer, but you know, originally there was they they made a European pilot that ended the series. It was like a a made per T V movie. So it was like it was the Northwest Passage and then they ended it with like a reveal of the killer or whatnot. And it it took place in the hospital with a scene. You know, with the scene from with the one armed man who we're about to see that scene that that sort of led to this climax with them cornering killer mob. And so, you know, maybe they were still toying with that imagery or using some of them, you know, then as they're kind of reworking it, feeling like, you know, let's take him out of that out of that context right now. But they keep one arm man in right, 'cause from here, after, you know, we have ⁓ in these early days they just don't show Sarah without it ending with a scream and I I'm speaker-1: Makes sense. speaker-0: Right. Then but then we head back to the Osborough and we we see Hawk, you know, Michael Horse Hawk catching glimpse of the, you know, the fabled one armed man. speaker-1: Right. Walking around evaluation. speaker-0: Yeah. It loses in with a sign that's a this way to the morgue. I'm like I'm heavy handed for shadows. I like it. speaker-1: The I'm just checking my notes for yeah, the there's also that I like that shot where he's where Hawkes sees him in the mirror and ⁓ notices him walking out and then and the wall behind the mirror is red and he's wearing a red sh the one of man's wearing a red shirt too and which I in my head ties into like the red red speaker-0: And interesting callback to what you know, what we just deduced now with like Sarah seeing Bob in the mirror, right? Yeah. ⁓ yeah. ⁓ wow. And then the writ, like, you know, it's just it's it's so well thought out. And then because it's so well thought out, every accident we then decide is well thought out. But if you do piece those together, I mean it does feel like, you know, like little narrative breadcrumbs, right? Definitely. speaker-1: Now we we go to we get Audrey. speaker-0: ⁓ yeah. Which is like I love this scene where she's just sort of like, you know, ⁓ where he's he's grilling her about what did she say to the Norwegians and she's like, I was just telling them about how my dear friend Laura was brutally murdered. It's just like the dump, you know. speaker-1: And I he's got his I wrote down this is one of my l like lines that I liked a lot. He said, If you ever call another stunt like that, you're gonna be scrapping bidets in a Bulgarian convent. speaker-0: I'm Daddy, I'm so good. speaker-1: Now there there's like another this is another like I guess film y thing that they do. So there's this Angelo Battolamente does the score for the show. Yeah. And then we cut to the scene and we see Audrey dancing to this music that like seriously like this is this is the score that we're listening to, but then you're like is she it's like she's dancing to the score, and then her dad walks in and he turns off the music. And so it wasn't score, it was music that was playing. And I just like that sh that like like kind of ⁓ messing around with your expectations of like what you're hearing. speaker-0: Consistent with the video, right? The picnic video. It's consistent with that. speaker-1: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, like the ⁓ 'cause like if it's do you know the phrase that the diegetic music and non diegetic music? The diegetic it's what you diegetic music is what you call if if the music is in the world of the movie or the show. It's also called source music. So it's like if if someone's listening to music or playing music, if a character is, then that me that's diegetic music. But if it's speaker-0: I don't. So And then non is like the score. speaker-1: Yeah, or yeah, the score or if it's like a song that you that the f like like it's needle drop music like like like Scorsese and Tarantino and Paul Thomas Anderson had they like have so many songs that they use and that that's non diegetic 'cause the characters can't hear it. So it when you wat when you when you play around with the thing where you think that it's music that's that the characters can't hear and then you reveal like, ⁓ no, that's actually music they're listening to, it's kind of a fun little the kind of like Yeah, it's like throws you off off off a little bit, which I kind of enjoy. Well speaker-0: Who I particularly enjoy is the log lady. But before we get to our interaction with her, I have to just you know, give a a shout out to the Briggs family. Agent Briggs is trying to comfort Bobby about Laura's death. He Bobby's being a total dick, puts a cigarette in his mouth and just like is gonna light up at the table and and Agent Briggs just smacks him. Smacks it out of his mouth. And it goes flying into his mother's meatloaf, which I might add does not look nearly as good as the meat how. meatloaf at the roadhouse tasted. Yeah. And that was quite good. The meatloaf does not look as as up to snuff. But what do you what are you thinking in that sort of family scene? I guess maybe they're just meant to show that Agent Briggs is like a good, impatient man, but also like has his limits just speaker-1: Yeah, and that he's he's I mean he's a very wordy, talky, talking guy, but like but in a flowery kind of way. That scene is one of those ones where I while while I watch it, I remember identifying with Bobby when I was younger and being like the kid who's like annoyed with the parents and he just sits there and doesn't speak the whole scene and he just Yeah, puts a cigarette in his mouth, which is total like F you. And now I watch it and I and I also my like speaker-0: Like talking at the table. speaker-1: identify with the parent side and I and I admire the the mom and how sh like she's like silently there but then like she's kind of the button at the end b like to to be supportive of of the son too to like kinda wrap it all in love, I guess. There's there's a there's like a lot of those little dynamics going on. speaker-0: And they're they're a family I do like every time that I see that them or you know, a permutation of two of them that you know, I do like the Briggs family. Yeah. But they really are a little bit of an a amuse bouche before we get to the log lady who is such an evocative character and who in the as we, you know, know, but not every listening name, in the network TV version, there was like a log lady intro each week that she she would do this taped intro that the version I'm re watching doesn't have them. I don't know about you. speaker-1: Well the also the that was not a part of the original thing. They did it later. I've been I've been watching the Log Lady 'cause it's on I have the I'm watching like the Blu ray, yeah, whatever whichever edition they and I have the vlog lady intros included. And they're they're short but and fun to hear and they're and they're little like clues. Like you listen to it and you're like, I don't really know maybe what they're talk what she's talking about, but but while you're watching the show you'll you'll be like, ⁓ okay, that's what that was that was a reference to. speaker-0: Right. speaker-1: It's this little little fun things. And you you it's also this it's it's a she's not a huge character on the show, but she's a important one. And and by having those log lady introductions, every time you see her, you've got a little bit more of a connection to her 'cause she's like talking to you at the beginning of every episode. speaker-0: Yeah, she's just connecting with you. And it's even the things she says are just so important. Like where, you know, she says to Dale, you know, are you talking about Laura Balma's murder? My log saw something that night. And then we see, you know, she she kind of taunts Coop to ask the log and he can't bring himself to do it. She's sort of like, ⁓ I thought so. And she goes then again, tying in with Firewalk with me, there's a scene that like always really hits me over Laura is walking into you know Spoiler pre but going into the roadhouse and she just has an interaction with the long reading. We'll talk more about it when we get to firewall. That's one scene that always really hits me from that movie that the two of them have. It's just really the line she says is super memorable and and meaningful and in that just that compassion that comes through is is when Laura needed it was nice. So I like the long reading. Yeah. Yeah. speaker-1: That the actress, Katherine Colson, she was married to Jack Nance. Did you know that? But they I think they were divorced already by the time Twin Peaks was happening, but they were married at some point earlier on. And I and the I heard some story about how like I think Lynch had come up with the character years earlier, but it was c he called her the log girl. And then he eventually wanted to put it put that character into the show. speaker-0: Not there. speaker-1: And I think it was Katherine Colson who was saying it I'm well you should need to change it to log lady at this point 'cause I'm I'm not I'm a little bit older now. speaker-0: Well, that's funny. And I mean But look, he she was his his log muse and ageless ageless. She she translated perfectly and thankfully, you know, she also is no longer with us, but she was able to be in the third season, which was just great. 'Cause it's hard to imagine ⁓ a Twin Peaks world that she's not part of in some way. Yeah. Well ⁓ now this is what I couple things that I thought I really you know, we see Leo figure out that they He he can't find the shirt and then we see what's been alluded to is that, you know, he he thankfully they cut away but he he beats Shelly, right? And and yeah, it looks like it's going to to be pretty violent. So far. So vanilla. Yeah, it's just ugly. speaker-1: That makes me think have you seen Full Metal Jacket? speaker-0: Not in years, I can't remember it. speaker-1: There's a sequence in that where all of the guys are Vincent Ginofrio is in that. Yep. And he and he's not during the boot camp, he's d not doing very well and all the other guys are being punished because he's not doing well. And then to get back at him, they they put bars of soap into their socks and they all like wail on him. speaker-0: ⁓ is that from the it that was from the eighties, right? That was before this. It's sort of like almost like a military punishment being inflicted on this on this poor waitress. You know what I mean? speaker-1: And then when when it happens in this though, she do we see the like the part of the house that's under construction. But and there's but there's the plastic sheeting everywhere and she winds up like cowering in a pile of plastic sheeting that's re like all around her and it's very reminiscent of seeing Laura wrapped in the plastic too, to kind of just keep nailing. speaker-0: I think that too. I think it too when I see the plastic sheeting and that we're constantly, you know, being ⁓ feeling ourselves pointed towards Leo and his sort of significance of this crime. And there are so many things. Like I thought of it even when we were saying when I was like, Yeah, and you know, the house is plastic wrap. And I'm like, and it is plastic wrap. And who ended up in plastic wrap and who has an abundance of it? You know, you just open up your shade and there's a ⁓ It's you know, it certainly is pointing us in his direction. Definitely. As ugly as that scene is, this is where we pivot to the Hayward house and Ma and Pa Hayward here are have invited James over and they're having a dinner, like with, you know, Donna bringing a date home. And this actually I thought was where I realized that I I like this coupling. Together it was such a sweet scene and sequence to me and it added Something so nice in a show that's so bleak and we just keep learning more and more about Laura and her troubled relationships and everyone seems to have troubled relationships. And this was just really landed with me as being like something nice and genuine of like nice when you're excited to bring like someone you like home for dinner. I thought it was really sweet and added something nice to the episode. What did you think? speaker-1: Yeah, you definitely feel that these are two kids that are like falling for each other and but the one he one thing that I thought was so we already talked about Doc Hayward was he delivered Laura and then he like does all these different like doctor jobs throughout the town. But he but we see here that he apparently ha he hasn't met he doesn't know James. And he doesn't mean speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Yeah, and doesn't he's like the the and is the wife is the lady with the past. No, I mean how does how does he not know them? speaker-0: I mean that felt in Congress, but don't you know there was also I mean, even when we enter Twin Peaks, right? It's like a population of fifty thousand people, but it feels more like it's a population of like a thousand people, right? So it's like I guess maybe they're trying to agree. speaker-1: Maybe it was I was like, I feel like you're trying to sort of catch the audience up on who everyone is and make sure the audience is aware of people rather than being realistic to the character with the docwood thing. But another another wholesome thing was the the drinks that he's offered to punch and ⁓ sparkling centers. Not even w I thought I was like, You're gonna mention water as an option? speaker-0: Exposition. And like, who just had sparkling cider at the ready? I mean it's like for your kid I mean, that's really nice, but for sure my parents were never like, Your friends are coming over, we've got sparkling cider. They're Your friends are coming over. ⁓ speaker-1: Maybe she just knew what was popular for the kids that yeah. speaker-0: Yeah. Proof kind. Yeah. speaker-1: But we and the and Bobby and Mike pulling up outside. speaker-0: Of course. speaker-1: But I do love the what the when they s when Mike's like first joker they're talking about James being first your girlfriend in that line and then one friend says too too bad we can only kill ⁓ once. speaker-0: It's true. It's true, but it is. It's like that that typical. It's like that James is a heartbreaker, man. And then we hear it out loud, really on the nose, what we're kind of told throughout in so many words, is we we hear we kind of close out with Jacoby listening to a day before I meet him. And we hear her sailing, James is sweet, but he's so dumb. And it's like I feel like that's a rallying cry of this series, right? Like that is definitely a prevalent plot point. Like ladies love cool James, but he is dumb. Yeah. The speaker-1: it up. This is all yeah, we get to it's nice we get to hear L Laura's voice again in the scene because we're just another thing where you we talk about her so much and hear about her, but hearing her voice on the cassette tape. Another it's also like an old form of technology that we don't get anymore with the audio cassettes. But the one thing that I was I'm talking about the the sound so much in this episode. The the audio here so at first we hear her voice playing over his speakers. speaker-0: Yeah. speaker-1: Doctor, and then he he plugs the headphones in. So also we're hearing it over the headphones. And there's a and it shifts, like the quality of the sound shifts. And then it eventually gets to the point where he when he puts the headphones on, we can't we don't get to hear her at all. It's just this yes, this funny thing about the way the way that they keep like adjusting the way that we we're hearing her and to and then to the point that you don't get to you don't get to hear what she's saying when she's saying that there's a the mystery She's she's remembered me telling about that mystery man and that's just when he puts the headphones on and we don't get to hear whatever it is that he's listening to her final response or her final like comment about. speaker-0: ⁓ and that's tying into a spoiler for her. Well, we can say it even for next week, but it's just a of a scene where we see Laura in a dream sequence and but we can't hear what she said. You know what I mean? Like at one point we can hear her, but so then at the end that we can't. There's this right, you know, there's always this feeling of being like she's got one more secret or one more thing to say that like somehow's just out of reach. Yeah. speaker-1: It's it it's like a funny thing to like why does he put the headphones on to because it's he's in his home. He doesn't have to worry about neighbors or I mean maybe he maybe he does maybe I guess it's an apartment we find out it's an apartment later on, so maybe he did have neighbors that he didn't want them to hear. speaker-0: Also maybe he just wanted to he was in a little bit of like a Laura Reverie, you know. speaker-1: He wanted to feel her as if she was talking in his ears. Yeah. speaker-0: And we we see that sort of the big reveal that closes out the episode is we see he was the one who was stalking Donna and James and he has the other half of the gold necklace. Yeah, and I mean either he's gonna resell it on eBay at O'Clear's special, or he's gonna you know keep it keep it close to his heart as a member. Okay, so that I mean look. speaker-1: He took that close, yeah. speaker-0: In an eventful sort of episode one, we see some slight hairstyle changes given the gap from back series pickup. But no, great, great kind of entry back into the series. What do you think in terms of so log off now and see us next week if you don't want spoilers, but let's talk about spoilers. What are some spoilers that kind of one thing I wanted to tell you is that in terms of I just feel like there were aspects of you know, Shirley and her performance that were just kind of like a news to Lynch because he's I read an interview with him that said he had a story he wanted to tell about Carrie Page, which obviously is the Laura Palmer character when she gets sort of taken in another timeline. So she goes missing rather than dead. And and then he has this you know, he had even just from creating that that was in, you know, an out ⁓ you know forty minutes of a of a fifteen hour series, right? Right. He he thought of a whole spin off around it, right? That he would you know, that like he was toying with the idea of a season four and we'll never see it and it I don't think it there was any pen to paper, but something speaker-1: Was there is that there are scrips there's a script for or scripts for do you know do you remember hearing about that? speaker-0: For t for season four. speaker-1: I don't ⁓ it's I don't remember it w I don't remember what if it was I know it was it's Lynch. He speaker-0: He has a couple unfit he has a couple that never were made that were ⁓ that actually went at the auction of his property. I saw them like ones that were never made that, you know, people could in theory, you know, now now they are out there as a state sovereign, people could try to do them. But obviously he wouldn't be directing, but it would still be cool, right? speaker-1: Okay. There's I just Googled this. There's a there's this thing called Mysterio. ⁓ this yeah, he was doing a Netflix show that he was working on that that wound up not I I think they I think it was already not gonna happen before he died, maybe. But but there was I think someone I mean I don't know if it there was a family member of his said that they were gonna maybe try to release the scripts. speaker-0: Maybe. ⁓ that'd be cool. Well, speaker-1: This is David Lynch's this is the AI overview that I'm getting. ⁓ David Lynch's fan plans to publish the 550-page script for his unrealized Netflix mystery series Unrecorded Night, also known as Wisteria. So that might be put out. A massive 13-episode thing. Says it serves as the fourth entry in his Los Angeles cycle following Lost Highway, Mulholland Drive, and Inland Empire. speaker-0: No, yeah, well I'll take it. speaker-1: So I I I couldn't remember if it was I guess it's not from Peaks related. It hasn't not been released yet. speaker-0: It hasn't been really but no, the part of the LA cycle. I mean, look, I'm I would gladly see the fourth piece in that sort of trilogy, that yeah quadrilogy. That just got weirder and weirder, right? Going from Los Highway to Mulholland Drive to Inland Empire. Just I can only imagine what wisteria where where that would have taken us. speaker-1: Some fly. I would have so so for for so for the sh the show, they they filmed the pilot of Twin Twin Peaks, and then it was yeah, there was a chunk of time passed before they started filming episode this the what what we just watched. And so Audrey that's why like Audrey's hair is longer, for example. But they in in that in between time, there had to have been at some point like this r a writer's room of ⁓ people coming up with the stories and like figuring out like all the connections. And I I whenever I watch especially with the these first the first season, I mo my I merely admire how many threads they've got going of so many characters and little pieces that are being like seated in and little even where we see like Leo with the football that he's cutting open that and then just all these little speaker-0: Or when he says Leo needs a new pair of shoes. Yeah. Well, you know what it is though, which is so masterful. And I what else has Warren like what else is Warren Frost known for? Because obviously we instantly, sometimes I instantly just go to Lynch, but it's like so much of the the soap opera the narrative part of it was put together by by Mark Frost. And even when I told you that that hidden hit hidden history of Twin Peaks, where I told you could they kind of give like Donna a nice ending. Yeah, he wrote it. speaker-1: Down and quick. speaker-0: Right. He really tie up all the kind of narrative plots because I think that, you know, that's what him and Lynch complement each other so well. Maybe L Lynch was the more esoteric, visual, visually arresting guy. And then like the some of the storytelling got kind of keeping it tight and almost, you know, soap opera ish, I think maybe was some of what Mark Ross doing. Yeah. speaker-1: His I think the thing that was like his big thing before Twig Beast was that he wrote on the show Hill Street Blues. Like he was and he's he's he let's see what other I think that's like the he's done on other T V stuff, but that was like I think the big thing. And he's but he has written a lot of books. I think he just had a new one new one just come out. I feel like I saw him Audible through something. speaker-0: ⁓ yeah, okay. Ap show. Yeah. speaker-1: But he but he ⁓ he has those Twin Peaks books like The Secret History of Twin Peaks and the Final Dossier and Yeah. So he defin yeah, like I I imagine I imagine he was getting the stuff that Lynch was throwing out there and finding ways to so speaker-0: Yeah. loop it together. And that's what he does a lot with the secret history and the final dossier is that he loops together because even some of the stuff from the return, Lynch doesn't fill in the blanks, like a path of sort of like, you know, how the the horn grandson came to be. Like you can kind of figure out what happened, but like he tells the story. You know what I mean? Of like how so yeah, that it's worth the read. But certainly I I but speaker-1: Gotcha. Okay, cool. speaker-0: To your point about the different threads, they're almost winking at it next week when they introduce Invitation to Love, which I love, the soap opera within the soap opera. That kind of only made it for the first season, but I always loved that that little video. speaker-1: Right. I've been trying to find like a t shirt for that or something like that. speaker-0: Emerald and speaker-1: So ⁓ one one's spoiler thing that I mean we we touched on it a little bit with Josie. We find out so many things about like I guess it's she's one character when you w when you find out mostly what you find out about her in season two about what's going on what's going on with her, with her where she came from and what happened to what actually happened to her husband and speaker-0: So that's smart about the fish. What you had like she was trying to throw off the meeting. That's interesting. speaker-1: 'Cause then 'cause is and then spoiler, we sh sh the season one ends with Cooper getting shot and then you eventually find out that she's the one speaker-0: They fakuna co, which like shown her in that big coat, and then we see it come back from the dry cleaners. Yeah, it's like it that's the fish theory does fit in with the idea of and she even said when he was like, Why did you shoot him? And she's like, Because I knew you would come and that we would end up here. You know, like when you came to town, I knew it would end like this. You know, you were gonna solve everything. speaker-1: Yeah, so that yeah, I guess that it's like it's such a s wild thing with the fish in the bird later. That like winds up becoming great delivery. Yeah. Shall we shall we? speaker-0: Yeah, the burglar. Shall we wrap up? All right, friends, for those listening, even if it's just our our family and friends, but a broader Twin Peaks audience finds us. We will pick back up next week. Xan or the art to catch a killer. speaker-1: Forward to it. speaker-0: All right. Night Prince. speaker-1: Right.
