Ed: No man, you're doing the intro. Go. Yeah. Chaz: am I? we're on. Welcome back, you loyal listeners. Thanks for tuning in. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: You're back on the airwaves with the E Double D I E, Mr Edward Masters, and the C H A Double Z Chaz to the Maz. Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen. Eddie, how are ya? Ed: Yeah, it's our first time with a live live audience today. Unfortunately no one showed up, so but there was meant to be a live audience. Chaz: I'd I would have put my n Ed: I'm all good, yeah. Chaz: my Sunday best on if I'd known that was happening. Ed: Yeah. yeah, I've actually day two as a working class man on the tools. so I had to rush home and peak traffic whilst hitting the steering wheel 'cause I was on a r running late to get a roast on. So I got my roast in at four fifty five and it's now five fifteen. So making getting shit done, bro. Chaz: I know. I was in the shower at five o'clock and I was thinking I I Ed: Yeah. Chaz: was thinking I hope Eddie's a little bit late. So what's what Ed: How's how's your week been? Chaz: it's been pretty hectic actually. Well it's only what's a day? Tuesday. We've been filming I've been Ed: Yeah. I mean you're like the week that was Chaz: Yeah, we're true. no I've been filming with Mikhail today. We're filming some e-bike videos. Two meter peter. Ed: Two meter pita. Yeah. Chaz: and he's great. We got some funny stuff. just went out. He just mic'ed me up and I just went and messed around on my e-bike, fell over a bunch of times, mostly going uphill. e-biking uphill is so hard. Like when it's techy, because you're kind of it's easy, but then if you just hit a little rock or something, w and the power will like lurch on and you just get thrown off into the tussocks. So he was laughing at me. That was nice. I took my skis to get repair because I've blown out every edge on my skis. Ed: There's sharks. Chaz: Yeah. Well, it's kind of my own fault. I like I skied into a rock bank. 'Cause I thought it was snow, but it was about Ed: Mm. Chaz: five centimetres of snow on rock and I just destroyed my skis. So Ed: no. Chaz: yeah, just bit of abon today, Eddie. Ed: I just lost you then for a sec. did you just Chaz: is that am I can you hear me all good? Okay. Ed: Yeah, I can hear you all good. Can you repeat the question, please? we just had a bit of a technical difficulty. Chaz: no, was just going on and on about myself. But How how Ed: Internal monologue. Chaz: how was your weekend? Ed: my weekend was all good, I s Saturday had did the Avalanche course so that I can release Chaz: Mm. Ed: so that I can get these skis off you as part of my as part of the end of the deal, you know? So I learnt Chaz: Yeah. So do you have a transceiver? Ed: Yeah. Trancever. Chaz: Went out and dropped a dropped a grand or two probably. Ed: No, I haven't actually dropped it yet, but I've got a transceiver, but I'm gonna Aaron from Ulta, a shop in town, is gonna suss me out with Chaz: yeah. I'm just gonna sort yeah. Ed: the probe transceiver and shovel. Yeah, the the bet Yeah, that's Chaz: Shovel, that's what you name, mate, for building your big kickers. Big backcountry booters. Ed: no, I found it real interesting though. I c I've I enjoyed the process of like learning how to use all the equipment. and learning how avalanches work. I mean a lot of a lot of the safety Chaz: Yeah, they're way more they're way more Ed: stuff sorry, a lot of the safety stuff is like you would say common sense, but I think it the course is more it's like important like teaching you to apply it. Apply common sense rather Chaz: Yeah. Ed: than 'cause I can see like on a Pow Day, everyone's revving to ski, you know? Chaz: The powder hounds. That's what we call them. Ed: Yeah, and you could easily bypass all the safety things because you're like so excited to go skiing. Or you you could like it's probably all good. But yeah. Chaz: I think you're right, it's like common sense but it's actually stopping to think. That's what people don't do. Even if they stop to Ed: And talk. Chaz: think about it, yeah, t the talking helps. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: Yeah. If you don't stop to think about it, you can make some stupid decisions even when you're really good. And on honestly, sometimes the most experienced people end up getting killed in avalanches, so it's Ed: Yeah. Have you have you had any like have you been in one or have you had any close calls? Chaz: Fee and I were up yesterday up Mount Temple above Temple Basin and we had a skier. One of our friends below us, he was traversing the slope that hadn't been skied, and pretty much the whole thing slid off below him. and it was like over a few rocks and stuff, so it wouldn't have been good if you got taken down there. so that was interesting. There's always stuff like that, like a few times a season you have stuff like that, but I haven't been caught I've been caught in little ones, but just enough that I can ski out of them or I can sort of stop and they'll keep going or whatever. I've never been basically I've never been Ed: Yeah. Chaz: taken for a ride, but Wheezy has. Wheezy got partially buried. Jamesa was involved in a d in a avalanche. Well he he was involved in the rescue actually, not in the avalanche at all, but in the rescue and actually one of people who was buried didn't make it. Ed: Really like. Chaz: so that's like pretty intense when you're Involved in a situation like that, you know, whether you know the person or not, if you're helping in a rescue, that's something that sticks with you for life. Like James talks about it quite often and he is still pretty you can tell it still weighs on him a little bit from time to time, even though he didn't know the guy, but they basically you know, dug this person out and he hadn't made it. so it's pretty it's pretty common. Ed: Yeah, 'cause when we when we were when we were doing the like simulated dig out or like, you know, she basically said like you've got ten minutes, ten minutes is the sweet spot for like someone staying alive. Any time after that the probability starts dropping off pretty quick. And we had to dig out a probe that was like Well, you know, find the bottom of the probe at like one point five meters. Which you're the tail of your Chaz: Takes ages, Ed: h the tail of your hole is you know, it's almost like depending on the 'cause I guess an avalanche stops Chaz: Twin on the slope. Ed: I guess a s an avalanche generally stops when it's like pretty mellow gradient. So the tail the tail of our hole was like it's almost like a three to one ratio. Chaz: Yeah, I was gonna say about it'll be about three or four metres long. And you also have to Ed: Yeah, so we had three Chaz: think about if someone's lying acrossways at that probe depth, you've gotta make the hole also two meters wide. Ed: Yeah, yeah. yeah, w on our f on our the one we did we definitely didn't make it wide enough. Like you would have had to keep digging and then we yeah. It was but it would be so hectic doing it in the moment. Chaz: I know, imagine it's and it's your best mate or your partner or you know, one of your kids. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: Like imagine it's someone you care about and you you know personally under there. It would just be so terrifying. Ed: And then she was saying, which something that something else that stuck with me was if you had multiple a multiple burial situation, like two Chaz: Yeah. Ed: she's like it you might have to triage the two people buried and just dig first dig the person who's the shallowest. Chaz: Yeah, that's how you do it, 'cause they have the highest chances of survival. So if you're the deepest, you're buggered. Ed: And to to make that d but to make that decision, you know, like you've found both people, it'll be so hard not to start digging when you find the first one, I reckon. Chaz: Yeah, and there's things that get real intricate when you get multiple burials, 'cause like when you dig for someone, if it i it changes. Like in a multiple burial situation, you would just dig for one spot and then you would just figure out if that's their middle, their legs, or their head. And if it wasn't the head, you'd work towards the head, clear that, and then you just stop digging. You might have one person just making sure they're alright and you'd go and st quickly start on the other people. It's like you'd have to make pretty gnarly Like on the fly decisions. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: Yeah. Ed: Yeah, it would be I don't know, th it would be pretty loose thing to be involved in, but I I guess it's that's why you go and do the course. Chaz: Yeah. But actually that's a real good thing to remember is that yeah, if you find the body, you just gotta get the he get to the head as quickly as possible, clear the airway, and then you can Ed: Yeah. Chaz: dig the rest of the body out. Like you don't have to make a perfect square two metre hole every time, you know? Like speed is is the main thing there. But yeah, it's fuck it's crazy. Well I'm glad you did it, you need now you've you've unlocked your your new sticks. Ed: And yeah, level one. yeah. I'd like Chaz: Shout out shout out to Noah and Richard for putting them together. And Noel's E You probably met him. He comes to Leo Gang and watches the races. Ed: Yeah, shout out no nose at Nolsey. Really? Chaz: Yeah. Ed: Well, if I've met you Noah, thanks bro. Much appreciated. Chaz: And Matt Mansa. Ed: Yep, and Matt, and and Richard, all the crew. Chaz: I'll I'll link you in with a few other mini 'cause next time you're in Leo game you should get a bear with Noah and Matt, they're cracker. Ed: Yeah, yeah, sorry. Chaz: So if can get your boots custom moulded with a with the Swiss race team, that's always good fun. Ed: Yeah. and then what else did I do? pretty chill Sunday. Yeah, just hold some stuff. 'Cause we've started our house build, so yeah, that's gonna be Chaz: Yeah, well that's exciting. Ed: gonna be chewing up a lot of my time. But it's been mean. on site just swing swing swinging off the sledgehammer and banging Waratars in. Chaz: Are you setting up the profiles and the boxing and all that sort of stuff? Nice. The grunt work. Ed: Yeah. I'm just doing the doing the easy stuff so that the builders can do their proper stuff. And then the plumbers in there putting in all their drains and then it's all go. Yeah. Chaz: shouts, Eddie, pig, in the ground, now! Ed: No, it's not even Connor Connor's Connor's on another job. It's me and Jake Robinson and then this other guy, Chris. So we've got Chaz: nice. Ed: the we've got the we're the A team is on the on the job. Yeah. So exciting Chaz: Love it. I'll have to come down and give you a hand at some point. Ed: exciting stuff. Yeah, we'll get a working bee for sure. Yeah. Even Chaz: of course. Ed: if there's no work to do, it'll be a working bee. Beers, beers, Chaz: Yeah. We can just go check out the site and have some beers. Ed: cigarettes, everything. Yeah, high beers Chaz: It's still half a Ed: beers, cigarettes, high vers. Yeah. Chaz: There's still half a pack of cigarettes from all those dodgy tradies that showed up at my working bank. Ed: Yeah. Well, most tradies are dodgy and smokers. Chaz: Yeah. And they don't run Stanley multi pack drill kits, do they? Ed: Yeah, no, Jake Jake's asked that I bring my tools to site tomorrow. Yeah. Chaz: You're gonna blow you're gonna blow him out of the water, You better watch out. Ed: Two amp hour batteries, look out. Chaz: And he's gonna come and swing in his tools around. Ed: Yeah, with no multi charger either. So and with a two ampere battery you do actually need to be charging quite a lot. So Yeah. If anyone if Chaz: You're pretty much always on, Always on charge. And hopefully Ed: anyone's listening, Makeda, DeWalt, Milwaukee, any of these branded tool companies, if they Chaz: Mm-hmm. Ed: want a influencer ambassador, you're probably not gonna get anything for it. If anything your sales are gonna go down. Chaz: No, you no, you you'd actually be quite good at each just some real life content on the building site. Ed: Yeah. But yeah, hit me up, Makita New Zealand, I'm Kane. Chaz: I reckon how how use how much of a mess you can leave your tools in and they still work. That'd be Eddie's like sa sale tactic. Ed: I actually need a tool belt too. yeah, Jake's given me a bunnings basket, so I carry that around. Yeah. Chaz: Nice. I I was often dropping my drills like off a two meter block wall or like into water, into mud, and they're actually incredible. Yeah, they keep working. I'm running the DeWalt DeWalt kit. Yep. Ed: Mm. Well you do. Yeah. but yeah, that's Chaz: Well Ed: what I've been up to. And then so what topics of discussion have we got on the agenda today, mate? Chaz: Wow. Ed: 'Cause I've got a few I put out a few questions today. Chaz: Yeah, well that's good. I haven't actually checked my Insta, but I will pull it up when you get into it. But firstly, I litch I just got home from this filming. Cold, muddy, it's pretty it's pretty wet at the moment. Crush it. So everything was a big mess. Came in, thought I'd jump in the shower and I just completely unrelated But I just was wondering Actually no, I saw some sheep in a paddock and just thought you know DAGs does everyone get them and and is it like is it only just re Ed: Capital of Israel. Chaz: Yeah, basically. You like DAGs? Ed: Yeah. Chaz: you know, it's only really hairy people. Like if you see someone who's got a gorilla chest, it's pretty likely they might have Dags. but then like girls, I d I've allegedly, like Ryder X has prob has told me there's not much hair down there, so like probably not an issue, you know? Ed: Yeah. Chaz: What does Ryder w have you talked to Ryder Zed about it? What does he reckon? Ed: well Chaz: Ha ha. Ed: Rider Z. just trying to think if I'll I mean I get a few Dags every now and then. Chaz: I reckon Yeah, there's like a sweet spot, 'Cause if you're if you're not getting any dags, you're probably wiping so hard that you're you know, you're getting a bit raw down there. Ed: I've been told I use way too much toilet paper. constantly, yeah. Kara says Chaz: You're burning Ed: that yeah, that I'm burning through she's like, What are you doing? I'm like I'm like nothing I'm like nothing Chaz: You're like a kid. You know Ed: out of the ordinary. I'm just running a normal I I kinda like I'm sitting on the toilet and I s I just give it a good pull, it just sort of goes and then Chaz: You give it's like a what do you call those wheels? The wheel of fortune that spins and it goes tick tik tik tick tick tick tick. You give it a real Ed: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then Chaz: hard yank and then it spins for ages. Yeah. Ed: Yeah. And I'm a scruncher but sometimes I I wrap it round my hand. Chaz: Yeah, right. Do you wrap your fingers individually? Ed: No. Chaz: No I I'm a folder, I reckon the scrunch is why you're using so much because it scrunches down to nothing. It's just like fluff. It's just air. So I reckon you if you fold Ed: Yeah, but like like when you say fold, are you like folding it like an envelop? Like Chaz: Like a paper dart and then you use the pointy end. Nah, nah, I Ed: Yeah. I don't know. Chaz: just will get usually three squares and then fold it in half so the join's not in the halfway point, you know, so it's folding on a strong piece. And then you end up with sort of something that's one and a half squares long and double double thick. So if you're running four ply, you end up with eight pliers. Ed: Yeah, but w you could say four ply, but like I pff I don't know about this I think the scrunch is w nah, no, I'm not no, no I'm not keen. Chaz: Also do you do you end up with dags? Do you like dags? Ed: not really. I mean Yeah. Chaz: 'Cause then w this well then the scrunch must be working. Ed: Yeah, surely like the scrunch surely there's more texture to grab grab more material. Yeah, like the Chaz: To yeah. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong. no, I'm I'm sweet actually. Maybe Ryder Ryder Ryder X is going wrong. I'll tell I'll report back. Ed: Yeah. That was actually one of the questions on my one of the responses was scrunch or fold. So with Chaz: we've solved two bears with one stone. but in terms of I reckon the best the best Ed: man, someone's listening. Someone said, We love the writer X stories, but surely Ch Chaz has some writer Y stories. Chaz: my god. This is a bit creepy at this point. but I reckon the old the old B day is W we can f we can move on from this conversation, but the B day is the duck's nuts. So good. Yeah. It's coming up. Ed: I love my birthday, yeah. It's the best day of the year. no, I don't know. I've Chaz: All right. Ed: I've never really got around the B day. But I I can imagine Chaz: I'm a huge fan Ed: it's pretty mad. Chaz: Marshi, I went to Marshi's house. no, sorry. Rider Y. I went to I was saw Rider Y once, went and stayed at night at his place and I went to take a deuce. and I get halfway through I'm like thinking, Bach, there's no toilet paper in here. Start looking all the cupboards, whatever. But you kinda it's kinda awkward, you're like sort of waddling around not really wanting to leave the vicinity of the toilet in case you drop anything on the floor. But then you don't and you can't really put your pants on because you've haven't found the toilet paper yet. So you're sort of like shuffling around the bathroom with your bum in the general vicinity of the toilet. Anyway, no toilet paper to be found, so I sh start shouting, Jason, write a write a why, write a why, where are you? And he just comes in, he says, Mate, have you heard of a shower? Just get in the shower And then I quizzed him on it and that's what he d he runs. He doesn't run toilet paper, he just has a shower after every shit. Ed: Close. Chaz: And I kind of write it. Ed: Yeah, that's it is nice. Chaz: Yeah. So writer writer why if you're listening, we do love your work. And let's get Ed: Hmm. Chaz: on w let's finish let's move on from this topic. Ed: Yeah, yeah, yeah. are we going through questions? Or pit peeves. Did you get any pit peeves? 'Cause I've got one. Chaz: I've actually got an up I'll do one more update and then you can run into a couple of your questions or peeps. so this shirt, this this fame infamous Ed: yeah, tell us about the shoe. Chaz: the infamous shirt that mum shrank in the hot wash. Ed: We've moved on from the convers that Chaz: So then it got stretched out again I by Fiona or Mum. And then when I went to send it to this guy, 'cause I made sure that he was a small or a medium, 'cause I knew it was w it it wasn't an XL anymore. And I posted it to him, 'cause he's a one of our first loyal listeners. And he and then my after our last conversation I thought, fuck, I better follow up and actually check that he's okay and he's not wearing this thing like a dress. So I'll read you out the conversation I had with him. He said He said, sorry mate, I've been meaning to to message and say a massive thank you for the shirt. Really appreciate it. but yeah, as per the pod, I'm not gonna lie, when I tried it on, I was pretty confused and wondered just how many Richie Root Richie Root gym sessions you've been hitting to find that shirt too small. Hahaha. I've now done the the hot wash to shrink it a bit. Beauty of a shirt. Ed: Mm. Chaz: So this poor shirt is Not sure what it identifies as, Somewhere between small and extra large. Ed: It'll be an extra medium. Chaz: Yeah, extra normal. But shout out to to Shazza. Shaza Shaza C. we appreciate you writing in to the pod. Ed: And he's ripping the shirt. Chaz: Yeah, next time should I ask for a photo? Ed: Yeah, ask for a photo. I wanna say yeah, yeah. Chaz: I asked for a photo in the in the most unsuspecting situation. Ed: Mm. Chaz: that's enough of my voice, Eddie. Can you can you hit us with something? Ed: yeah, I'm just trying to get onto my so it's quick pet peeve, but my pet peeve for this week was people who use Apple Weather and it's just fuck, it just pisses me off. It's not a reputable weather source. Chaz: this is really controversial Eddie because I actually I actually go off Apple weather every now and again I Ed: Well Chaz: I think it depends where you are. If you're in a main center and you wanna know if at what time it's gonna rain, I've actually found it kinda helpful if you put the pre sip tab on and it's relatively accurate. In Christchurch. Ed: I don't even know where to find Apple Weather. no, I found it. Chaz: It's just called Wither. Ed: Top top corner. Chaz: Top yeah, but you're it's not always the top corner. Ed: Top corner on my phone. I don't know man. I don't actually know why I'm attacking Apple Weather because I never use it, but I just I just feel like it's doesn't have any credibility with me. Based on based on nothing. So I'm kind of being a bit of a hypocrite here. but my go to is Y R dot N O. That's my Yep, I Chaz: Yeah. Reputable source. Ed: yeah, I froth that. So let us know what you use as your weather sources. and that's my pet peeve of the week. Glad to Glad to get that off my chest. Chaz: I've got a good one here at eat When Brad S no Yeah yeah we can we can name him. Brad Sloan has ridden in and he says his biggest his biggest Ed: Well, Brid Solana. Chaz: beat beam is when Ed locks his keys in his when Ed locks the keys in his apartment Ed: There's actually a great story about this. I didn't lock the keys in the apartment. This is this is fucking brilliant though. Fuck this is a good little he's really teed us up for a good story here. So I was visiting Bradley Sloane, the flying Fijian in Freshwater, the Prince of Freshwater, and he lives in a third floor apartment. So we went and played golf, and he'd left the apartment unlocked so I could come and go throughout the day 'cause he was at work being a corporate Sparky guy. he's off the tools, he wears RMs, he doesn't wear work boots anymore. Chaz: nice. Ed: and then when he came home we went and pla we went out to play golf, but he'd like he locked the door thinking he had his keys. But he had left his keys inside, not me. I don't even have the keys. He just blames it on me. And so we were like, shit, this is gonna be a bit of a problem. So but we'll figure it out later. So we went and played our round of golf and then he rang his workmate, 'cause he's being a Sparky, they have these he had a ten meter ladder. So we we went and got we went and got his Yeah, we went and Chaz: A ten meter letter that is so high. Ed: we went and got this massive ladder. like huge and put it up to the Chaz: How many segments does it fold into? A ten meter ladder? Is it like ten one meters Ed: It's like a slider, but Chaz: or Ed: I guess it's like two sixes with an overlap. And Chaz: my god. Ed: And then so we we get this ten meter ladder and it's on dusk. and we rig it up to the building so that we can climb up to his third floor third floor third floor balcony and it's so sketchy, but like he I was like, I'm holding I'm holding down the bottom and he climbs up, manages to get the keys. So that side of the that side of everything's all done. But we were gonna cook dinner at home. And then it would we'd chewed up so much time on this that we decided to go to the pub. And I was at Chaz: and here w this is where every good story starts. Ed: Yeah, yeah, and I was in I was in Aussie for a wedding and I'd been telling Braddon Bradd found this his newfound fashion fashionable looks and stuff and he's got his RM Williams boots and I was saying how I wanted some RMs because I go to I've been going to a few weddings and I always just buy a set of shoes and then kind of write them off and it's like Chaz: Just yeah. It's not sustainable. Ed: I may as well buy a nice I may as well buy a nice set, and just keep them. And but then I looked up I wanted to get some boats and then I realised the RMs actually cost like eight hundred seven hundred bucks and I was like, I'm not gonna I wasn't keen to pay seven hundred bucks for these RMs. So we were trying to find Brad was like he was just chirping me saying, you should get some RMs so we were like trying to find some more marketplace and stuff and then it just didn't work out. But we go to the we go to the freshwater pub and have a couple of beers and get dinner and then there's a few of the the those pianos that pay out cash in the room in that room. Chaz: Yeah. Ed: Yeah, the the adult games room. So I Chaz: Yeah. Ed: was like, I'll get fifty bucks out and go in. chucked fifty bucks through the pokies and I hit a feature and got like twenty. So I was up twenty bucks. But there was this group of dudes in there who were kind of on a hell bender and they were and they were just having they were like pretty they were pretty funny guys. On a Wednesday night. So me and Brad just sat in Chaz: Ha ha. Ed: there with sat in there with them and we're just kind of like chatting to them and having a few beers. And this one guy had been having some pretty good luck and he was he was pretty cooked as well. He was like j Brad was calling him the ghost of freshwater because he was And Chaz: Mm-hmm. Ed: the guy comes up and he's like, Yeah, bruh, I'll give you a hundred bucks if you Yeah, Chaz: It sounds like an issue. Ed: yeah, he got he pretty much was. He's he's the highest paid tradey in Sydney. He installs curtains and he said it's the it's the most lucrative trade but no one really knows it. That it's like a secret within the trade that they get paid so much. Chaz: Nice. Ed: And Chaz: So money obviously wasn't an issue. Ed: No, no, money definitely wasn't an issue. So he said he came to me he came up to me and he's like, I'll give you a hundred bucks. if you do max bets, anything you win over fifteen hundred will split it. And I was a little bit apprehensive. You know, I don't want to like I was like, like, I don't already know how this works. Like I don't really want to gamble with your money and then you and then well, I lose it and now you're pissed off or something like that. Chaz: Yeah. Ed: But he just feeds it into my machine, sets it up and then I hit the spin button and hit a feature first spin like school bell go Chaz: No way. Ed: the school bell goes off yeah and then we're going through this feature and there's heaps of little like I don't know features inside the features that you have to get right and I'm just na Yeah Chaz: Yeah it like doubles up or something, does it? Ed: and I'm just nailing it and then by the end of the feature I've gotten fifteen hundred bucks. So the guy just And the guys already that got the Prince of I mean the Ghost of Freshwater had been winning that night. So he had a like a pocket full of cash. So he just hands me f seven hundred and fifty bucks on the spot in cash. Yeah. And then Chaz: No. Ed: he just disappeared. Like in true ghost like fashion. He just like he's just like, yeah, later, boys, and just rolls out. And me and Brad are just sat there. I've got seven hundred and fifty bucks in my hand. Well, I've got eight twenty because I won seventy. And we're just like, What Chaz: Mm. Ed: the fuck just happened? And then Brad's like, Bro, you've got to go buy the RM boots. So Chaz: Yeah, Hundy. Ed: yeah, so the next day he took a half day. I bought the other boys a round of bears and we rolled out of there seven hundred and fifty bucks up and I went and bought some R boots the next day and now I've got a set of RMs. And it all Chaz: That is awesome. Ed: and it all came from Brad locking his Chaz: Keys in the apartment. See? Ed: Okay, there's keys in the apartment. Sorry. Chaz: Everything has a silver lining and sometimes it's not even a silver lining, sometimes it's just way better than if you'd done things right the first time. So you kinda want to fuck up a bit. That's great. Ed: Yeah, exactly. So Chaz: Well, I actually had some really good luck the last two days, Eddie. You sound like you've been smoking a few of those tradey darts on site. Ed: I smoked whatever illness they were feeding on the seven triple seven to Auckland. Really got me good. Chaz: Yeah. yeah, so like we were up at Ar Arthur's Pass in the weekend and on the way up there Fee's like, couple of weeks ago I drove past him and I saw this crashed hi Ace. It had been flipped off the side of the road down to a paddock. And she's like, I've got my drill and a whole bunch of screwdriver bits, so I'm gonna undo the screws and you know, take a few of the whatever is in there. Obviously borrow if they ever want it back. If you're listening Ed: Long term idea. Chaz: and you flipped your hi Ace, message me. I've got your we'll we'll get to this later, but I've got your your portable toilet and I will happily return it once I've passed my passed my self contained certification. But anyway, so we found this crash van. Been there for a few weeks, so we thought I would just you know, it's just getting thrashed by the weather and people are just ripping shit out of it without any care. So we shot there and someone had like ripped the diesel eater out and snapped it, not even unscrewed it, which is a bit of real shame, because now it can't mount anywhere. And then they w they'd ripped the hose, so there was just diesel leaking out of the diesel tank just all around this vehicle. but found this toilet which is perfect for my van to get self contained sticker. and then we found this little yogurt bottle full of like nuts and bolts and screws and things. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: So, that'd be handy. So we just took that and then borrowed it. Went to Went to Arthur's Pass and the couch had like it was one of those beds that folds into a couch or a thing. or a bed. And it was missing like a whole lot of pieces, and these the cross pieces that braced that and made it strong had all fallen off and all the bolts were snapped. So I thought, I'll just try. See if any of those bolts fit. Like there's no way they will. But we'll just see. And it was perfect. The first one I picked up perfectly fit. And we had like ten of them. So I just redid the whole thing and it was like just meant to be. So now we have this perfect sofa bed. Ed: Right. Chaz: You're welcome to come and stay on it. And then for the rest of the day, we went up scanning. I lost my sunglasses. spent like an hour looking for them and then pretty much gave up. And then they magically appeared in this like side of this backpack that they'd fallen down this table thing and then bounced and got caught with one arm hanging off the edge of this backpack. So found the glasses and was stoked. Like I was like this day cannot get any better. I mean it would have been better if I hadn't lost them, but the feeling you get when you find them is way better than never losing them. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: So I was like already on cloud nine and then we were walking down the track and I went to fill up Fee's like big Yeti jug. It's like a five litre cooler jug thing. And I like reached into the stream to do it and went to unscrew the cap to like give it a rinse and it just unscrewed way quicker than I was expecting and I dropped it into the rapids of the river and I was like, bugger, this bottle's pretty much useless without its lid. so I was gutted and I started like jumping into the river with my puffer jacket on, like reaching down into these into the rapids to try and feel if it was the cap. And then we tried for like five minutes, couldn't see it, and we're like, we'd have to give up. And then as I was walking up like the bank of the river, I just looked down and I see this little black rock in this pool. And I'm like, I'll just reach down and just see what that is. And reach down, sure enough, it's the lid of the of the bottle. Ed: Ha ha ha. Chaz: So then we were like running around the car park, like Cheering, go yeah, fuck yeah, we found it and just Ed: Yeah. Chaz: frothing up. If there was a pub close by it would have been dangerous, but not quite as good as winning s eight hundred and ten dollars, but a close second I reckon. Ed: I don't know if I've told this story on have we told maybe, but Chaz: Which one? Ed: twenty fifteen when we were running Bergamont and it was getting towards the end of the season and our van had got serious overheating issues. Like you couldn't go up any you could go on the flats all good, but anytime you're going up a hill, the fan wasn't working and it was just Like you'd drive a K, sit for half an hour, let it cool down. We took like the whole grill off and to it looked like a full drift car. We were calling it drift piggy. and we were trying to get Chaz: Would you be running the hot the hot air all the time? Ed: Yeah. Like everything. We're trying every trick in the book just to get through and we had to tow a trailer and obviously it's so heavy. Like Chaz: Ha ha ha. Ed: and it was the last like two weeks of the season. We're just trying to like the we're not even planning on selling the van. We just want to finish the season and Chaz: And then live. Ed: be done with it, yeah. We just needed to get back to the UK. Keeping the trailer but getting rid like I d I couldn't c have cared. actually I'll start with how we got the van. That's even better. It's it's a story of don't if it's too good to be true, it is it's too good to be true. 'Cause I just Chaz: It's too good to be true. Ed: got this dare I'd like we did the first year of Bergamont on thirty grand for the whole year and then the next year they like, We'll give you nine Chaz: That's incredible, Ed: we'll give you ninety five and I was like, dude, I am rich. Like we are So we are gonna be living luxurious this year. And I so I was like I'm gonna buy a mint van, you know, do this all right, and then so I'm going. Facebook marketplace wasn't a thing, so you're like on Gumtree in the UK trying to buy a van before we get there and I'm like I was keen on like a th a sprinter, you can get these like turbo ones, three one three. That's the van I wanted. And I'm messaging all these people trying to and then this one popped up, it's like a twenty twelve for six thousand pounds. And like given it's twenty fifteen at the time, so this van's pretty new. Chaz: That's pretty new. Ed: Yeah. And I'm like, man, this is such a good deal. Like, I can't believe they only want six grand for it. That's sick. Chaz: Yeah. Ed: And I'm messaging the guy and he's like, Look, I've had heaps of interest, can't hold it for you but if if you want to pay now we can pay through this sick through if you play pay through PayPal you can put your you can put your money basically in like escrow I think it's called where it's like held and then it's held it yeah it's kind Chaz: It's like third party or something. Ed: of held in limbo and then when When you get the van and you're happy with it, you release the money and I we both say that we've u upheld the end of the deal and then the money gets released into you know. And I was like I I did a little bit of research into it. Yep, that that sounds all good. And this guy's like sent so I set up a PayPal, the guy sets sends me this like link which takes you to PayPal, you log in, you put your money in and I was like sick. bought this van, this is so mean. And then a week later, like me and Rupert Chapman are like flying to flying to the UK. And the comms after putting the money into the account had been very intermittent at best. And, you know, benefit of the doubt, I was like, this should Chaz: Could you still see the money if you logged in at this point? Ed: Yeah, clicking on the link, yeah. Chaz: Yeah. It was like this money's being held or something. Ed: Yeah. Well it just shows you like a balance. but yeah, to like get to the UK, ring in this number, like can't get hold of the guy, and then you it's just like after a couple hours of being like 'cause we were like, where are we gonna go? We were meant to just go and pick the van up and then s like drive yeah, well, we were meant to Chaz: Sleep in it. Ed: drive to to Germany to pick up our trailer 'cause it had been wrapped in stuff and it was at Bergamot. Chaz: Yeah. Ed: And Chaz: So what you just land in London in Heathrow? With what? With your bikes? What do you get bikes over there? Okay. So you just land there and you Ed: Yeah. Nah, no bikes. We've got bikes over there. So we're just crew we just yeah. And we're like meant to pick up a van, but it quickly dawns Chaz: But the guy's not replying. Ed: quickly dawns on us that the van is a scam. And then so we we get to the bottom of it that this the guy has sent me like a fake it's like a mirror imaged PayPal thing. So Chaz: So he's made his own website that's basically looks like PayPal. Ed: Yeah, that s and then when I log in, I like send him the money to this account which shows up on like he's like put it it looks everything looks exactly how it would, but I've sent Chaz: No shit. Ed: them I've sent the money to him and it's gone. And I'm I never like got it back. So it's like down heaps of the money that we thought were I was that was like fuck. And then I ha Chaz: my god. Ed: and then this is like this first It's like the start of the season and we've got no operating cash. It's all gone because we had to buy another van and then this so this Chaz: Yeah. So you're Ed: shitty Peugeot van, it wasn't shitty, it was actually pretty good, but like it was all we could get at short notice. It wasn't Chaz: Yeah. Ed: like ideal for the job, but it did the trick. Chaz: So what are you you're in London, you're still in London, the scams happened and what, you just start going on marketplace or whatever ebay or whatever. Ed: Yeah, just going on gum just going on Gumtree and eBay and just like me and Rupert are just sitting there just like messaging and we walk we're like tubing and walking around like just like Chaz: my god. Ed: trying to trying to buy a vehicle. 'Cause we needed we had we had to be places. So we were like Chaz: that sounds horrible. Yeah. Ed: we had we had about twenty four hours. Chaz: Yeah. I always had the same thing with my van at the start of last year, Just like you have Ed: yeah. Chaz: to you have to get it 'cause the right the first race is next weekend. And it's it's a world cup. Ed: Yeah. Chaz: You can't explain to your sponsors, nah, the price wasn't right for the van, so I'm not gonna be at the first World Cup. It's not really how it works, Ed: And it was super it was pretty like they must have been like, fuh, like why are we dealing with this this guy again? 'Cause Chaz: Ha ha. Ed: 'cause I had to like ring ring up the marketing lady and be like, Hey, like, can you for can you front us like next month's payment now? 'Cause 'cause like we like I didn't have enough cash to like roll it over till we got that payment. And then luckily Chaz: Yeah. Ed: they were super understanding and but they were they were like you've been scammed like it's it's you look so stupid and you feel so stupid. Yeah. So Chaz: I know. But at the time you even do you always do your research too. And the thing is ninety nine percent of the time it works out fine. So then you get complacent, you're like, yeah, do like some real high level research, looks all good, and you just send it. Otherwise you get nothing done. Ed: Yeah. And you're just like, I was just excited. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But Chaz: Yeah. Ed: to finish that story, so we've got this van and it's like on its last legs and it's overheating and we've got to go to Andorra. That's when we met up with Kip and stuff. But we had to get up that last mountain. We had to get up that last mountain pass 'cause driving from I can't remember where the I can't remember where the Yeah, like Yeah. Chaz: from Toulouse. If you go on Toulouse there's that huge mountain and then the tunnel. Ed: But like getting Chaz: Is that the way? Ed: down to Toulouse is all flat. So we were cruising on the flat. Chaz: Yeah. Yeah. Ed: you know, like the air from the air we took the grill off and stuff, so it was just like straight to radiator and it was all good. Chaz: Was it May was Mailink Motors there as well? Ed: Nah. Chaz: Nah. Ed: but Tom Lois and Kurt were and Chaz: yeah. Ed: but so we're driving up with we've we're starting our li it's like a stage. Every K we have to pull over and Chaz: Ha ha ha. Ed: wait and we're just like, Fuck, this is taking so long. And then as we we get about like two or three K's up that mountain climb or like up Chaz: Yeah. Ed: that climb from Toulouse and there's a car there's like a car that's been crashed and so we like pull over and I think wax is with us as well. And we we're like, fuck it, we'll try and get the fan out of this crashed car and and wire it into our van. Yeah. Chaz: And wire it in. No way. Ed: So we we the boys I've actually I've got no mechanical know how to be doing any of this, but the boys are in there like under the car and they're like wax is like everyone's getting so dirty. And so we get this Get this fan out and we end up like I think we put their radiator in as well. and it's like a full roadside job, but then miraculously it works and we the fan starts working and it starts cooling the engine and then we like fill up the radiator out of this stream which we're parked up next to as well, and we're just like Driving up the hill, just floor Chaz: Ha ha ha. Ed: flooring it and the needle on the thing is just going it's just dead s dead center and we're just like the like screaming like this is the sickest shit ever. Like we couldn't we couldn't believe it. yeah. Chaz: my god. That is that is incredible. That would have been the best feeling ever, Ed: And a week later it blew up. It was. And a week later it blew up. It wasn't actually working as well as we thought it was, but yeah. Chaz: well if it's probably if it was overhanding that much there was probably something fundamentally wrong with the engine. Ed: Yeah. And then so when it blew up in Andorra, we just left it in Andorra and a year later it was still there, just parked in the same car park. Chaz: What? Done the whole winter. Ed: It stayed there for the whole winter 'cause Walker went back for a team camp and it was still there. Chaz: And then when the World Cup Ed: Yeah. Chaz: came the next year they had to move it to get the trucks in probably and that was the end of it. Ed: No, it was like right after passport control. It was just parked up. Hmm. But yeah. you need to get somewhere, Chaz: I know where you are. Yeah, yeah. that's gold. Yes, it sacks I gotta go. yeah. Yep. no, we're gonna Ed: Five fifty nine. yeah, so that's that's what's been going on. Chaz: That was great. That was great. I think we we pretty much nailed it, Eddie. I don't think I Ed: Yeah, forty five minutes. Chaz: think that we can finish on that. That's quite a h a good note to finish on. I think we need to do a bit of brainstorming of some of Yeah, we need to keep these the stories coming. Ed: Yeah. We'll get it we'll try get it let's try get a guess for the next one. Chaz: Yeah. Ed: We need to get George Brannigan on, I reckon. He's got some good stories. Chaz: Yeah. And actually Joe Nation, I'd love to hear a bit more about the Mowgli the Mowgli bush camp. Ed: bro, let's do it. And Fear Brother. We need to get Fear Brother. Chaz: And it would be good to get, yeah, February has some yarns. And Wheezy. Wheezy and I have Ed: Yeah. Chaz: some good yarns from from our first season skiing in Europe. Freeloading, Ed: I bet. Chaz: that was pretty good. alright. I'll do some homework. You can do some homework. Ed: Cool. All right. Chaz: Have a good night. Enjoy the roast. Yep. Peace. Ed: Yeah dude. See you next time. Chaz: See ya. Ed: See ya.
