Harry: Welcome back to the uncomfortable triathlon podcast with myself, Harry Palmer and my co-host, Andy Horsfall-Turner. How are you, mate? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, very well mate, very well. On this lovely Sunday evening, it's been a long training and activity day with the family, so yeah, it's a bit of a late recording this one. Harry: in a little bit. You've actually had a long ass day. We'll dive into that a little bit. In this episode, we'll probably chat a little bit about what we're up to at the minute. bit of an update from both of us. We'll talk about the Geelong 70.3, which was awesome to watch. We'll probably touch a little bit on the Oceanside predictions for this coming weekend. First off, you want to Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Harry: take us away with your update. How's your training going? You obviously got South Africa coming up in the near future. How's training? How is family life? Fitting it all in around having the kids and yeah, how's things going? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Things going, yeah mate, not too bad actually. ⁓ It's been a pretty hectic, really while, it's been a pretty hectic few weeks and obviously we've chatted about being like ill and coming back from that sort of stuff so ⁓ I'm currently in that position where I'm trying to bank some really good weeks of training. ⁓ Not get sick because my kids keep getting sick and just like trying to like basically just be like yeah do the best executed training I can do. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: but also not do anything stupid and like get like another really bad illness that puts me out for like a week or whatever because I feel like, yeah, I'm in that kind of period where like I'm super fit and I'm kind of like relatively ready to race, but like also I don't want to like, yeah, I do want to do a bit more training before we get on that start line. So yeah, just got to be careful. But I actually did, I did the impossible this week. Harry: Yeah. Yeah. gone. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: So my coach sent me my training So my coach sent my training and he bases his like weekly loads all around TSS and like the amount of TSS he wants me to hit in the week Mate I nailed it. I hit the exact TSS ⁓ Bang on literally to the to every every number. It was like I think it was like Harry: You have my attention. Yeah. Was it bang on? ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: 1463 and I was bang on I'm a I was I've sent it to too many people. I'm way too proud of this And anyone who doesn't know what TSS I Yeah, I mean it's turned what has been like yeah an okay week into what I'd say is a pretty good week Harry: Stop turning me on. That is what dreams are made of. That's incredible. you May, that's really good. And like 1400 and whatever it was TSS, that's pretty large. Like what kind of volume are you doing? Like hours wise, what does that equate to? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I think it was, I can tell you actually, was 27 hours, which is pretty decent for me. I don't really tend to like, most of my weeks are normally hovering a bit below, a bit above sort of 20, especially with like the busy lifestyle I have. So I'm definitely on a slightly higher volume kind of block into this race. But it's basically like, I think I cycled Harry: Cool. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: 17 ish hours ran maybe like 70 odd K 75 K and then yeah the rest would be yeah be in the pool I can't really think about the pool I just turn up and do it so but yes Harry: That's pretty big. Nice. Yeah, I mean you're good enough to not have to worry about it too much. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Well, yeah, you can't get too complacent because that's when you get exposed, isn't it? ⁓ Harry: complacent yeah that is true that is true Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But I had a very similar kind of, what we kind of chatted about a couple of weeks ago where I did like that like loaded day into like, um, well I did an even harder one actually. the kind of backend of this week, I went, um, where do go? I went a long ride on the Wednesday. Yeah. So long ride on the Wednesday into like a durability ride on the Thursday, which was like four by 20 minutes. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: and I did that outside actually which was really nice. I dropped my car at an MOT which is like on the outskirts of Swansea and then I took the longest road home. Well, I did 150k but I basically did this massive loop and ended up back home. Harry: did a ride and then came back. Mate, you... I was gonna say, you pretty much live in fucking Swansea. How's it 150k back home? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mate, I took a wrong turn in the Breckenbeekens and... ⁓ But actually, it was a really good ride. So I went 4x20 minutes. I was a little bit naughty. I went over power a little bit. So I did them at like 340ish watts. But I felt really good. It was sunny as well. I was in shorts. Yeah, TT bike. TT bike, short jersey, short bibs. ⁓ Harry: Nice. TT or roadie? Nice. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, just had a really good ride and then I followed that up with like a bit of like Ironman kind of tempo run in the evening ⁓ and then into like one of those build runs again on the Friday that was. And that was, my legs were pretty shot on that. I was, yeah, struggling. But we, yeah, we got through it and then since Friday my quads have just been absolutely smashed, mate. We're two days, two days after. Harry: Yeah, but... Yeah. short. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And my quads are still feeling a little bit... Not good. Harry: What was the total distance of that run on Friday? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Uh, like 34 kilometers. So, um, what's that like 20, 21, 21 a half miles. Um, and it was basically like, um, it was a basically extended version of the one I'd done before, but instead of doing like 30 minutes at like four minute K's it did, I did like 60 minutes at four minute K's before then ramping up. So yeah, my, yeah. I'll tell you what, was actually. Harry: Yeah, that's big. Yeah. Yeah, it's pretty naughty. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: So coming to the end of that first, so I warmed up, did 60 minutes, like four minute case, I think 401 maybe I think it was. And I was getting to like 55, 56 minutes into that run and I was about to then ramp up and I started getting like a little bit of cramp in my quad and I was like, oh no, I still. Harry: ⁓ I thought you were gonna say, I started needing a poo. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, no, no. So I started getting cramp in my quad and I was like, um, thinking to myself, I was like, I've got, I've got another like hour and 10 minutes of this run to go. Um, but luckily I'd like pre-planned and I'd put like, have you used the precision sodium pills before? They're like, I think they're 250 milligrams. Harry: That's not brilliant. Yeah. I've actually not, I've never used one. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: have you not used it? So I bought them because I thought they might be good for late in an Ironman marathon where you don't really want to necessarily drink lots of fluid but if you can just pop a pill and swallow a little gulp of water it might be good. So I literally put two in my mouth and I had a Precision 90 gel and I literally put two in my mouth. I squeezed loads of gel in my mouth. Harry: No. Yeah. Yeah. He tried to swallow it with gel. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And I like just yeah, because I didn't have a drink on me. So I just like, just like squeeze this gel, swallowed it. Tell you what mate, five minutes later my quads were happy as happy as anything. The little energy kick as well. Harry: Ugh. I bet they were bloody brilliant. That's impressive. So you did the whole run with no fluid or anything. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, I did stop briefly a little bit after that just to like, so I'm self-supported on those runs because ⁓ yeah, the only person I can ever get to come and give me a hand is Will Monday. So, and he was busy apparently. So if anyone in Swansea ever wants to help me on a long run, just yeah, slide into my DMs. Harry: Will Monday, Do you have, do you not have one of those, ⁓ one of those little nerd belts or something? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I did, yeah, I had like a fake version one. ⁓ But it was a bit crap. And yeah, so I've kind of gone off it. what I tended, what I've, they do, and like we're fortunate because it hasn't been super hot recently. I tend to just down like a lot of fluid before I start the run, try and stop midway through at some point. Again, I'd probably just like down 500 mil. Harry: Yeah, they look a bit weird. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: and then I finished the run and I wasn't too dehydrated at all. But as we get into spring, summer time, I probably do need to be bit more on it with that, even running an hour when it's middle of the summer here in the UK, you can get so dehydrated so quickly. Harry: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. ⁓ It's just because it's like it's the humidity as well. Like you end up just sweating so much. It's ridiculous Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, it's... Yeah, not fun. Well, not fun for us Brits who are just not used to heat. Harry: No, not even a little bit. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But yeah, other than that mate, I've had a pretty standard week, I think. I'm trying to work out what else I've done this week. ⁓ Yeah, just a bit of time with the family. ⁓ I had a bit of a nightmare this morning because I thought the clocks were changing today, but it's actually next week I think it is. But also, I thought it was the nice one where we gain an hour. Harry: It's next week, yeah, yeah. I think we lose one, don't we? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I think we lose an hour, yeah. So this morning my toddler woke me up at 6am. But I thought it was the one where we gain an hour so I was like, oh it's actually 7am if that makes sense. So I was like, oh that's really good sleep. I got like 8 hours of sleep or whatever. I'm like, oh that's buzzing, that's class. And then I came downstairs and I was like, I feel really tired. And then it suddenly clicked, I was like, I've completely effed this up. It's like, it is 6am. It is 6am. Harry: The worst. Yeah, yeah. You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And I do feel tired. And actually I am fucked. Harry: Yeah, I'm now going to go to the coffee machine. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ yeah, yeah, two coffees before I got out the door this morning, that's for sure. ⁓ But yeah, enough about me mate, how is... Harry: not surprised mate when you're deep in that Ironman block Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's yeah, yeah, it's, it's, it's brutal. ⁓ but yeah, mate, tell me, tell me about how you've been getting on obviously return to re running building back into training, I guess. And also, ⁓ you told me this afternoon, you're trying your hand at professional golf. Is that right? Harry: Yeah, I don't think I'm going to get very far with that. Holy shit, my putting is atrocious. But it's funny because I like to think I go and play golf for a bit of stress relief, but the reality is I go and I get more stressed from playing golf because I'm so shit. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: How many balls did you lose? Harry: ⁓ Well, okay, so I lost one, but I found one. So basically I'm even, which is all good. am like a little, mate, I'm like a little truffle pig for the golf balls around the golf course. I will hunt them out. I sometimes, God. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay. Even. No, I was just going to ask if you've got to the point where you know what a good golf ball and a bad one is. Because I wouldn't have a clue, but there definitely is good ones and bad ones. Harry: Yeah, 100%. So I actually, it's funny because the rest of my family play golf as well. And so we occasionally, when we're all around, we'll go and we'll play golf in the evening or whatever, or away for a weekend. And I'll be the person who like provides the golf balls for the family because I find so many. I literally, I could go around. I love this in the summer. I will book the last tea time available and... I will go round in the summer evening and I'll take one of those Ironman transition bags and I'll just fill it up with golf balls from... It's ridiculous. There are a few holes at Cumberwell where you could find like 40 golf balls on one of the holes. It's incredible. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: just fill it. That mate, I tell you what, you've started to create your little job post-triathlon. Leon's gonna be cutting wood, but you're gonna be selling golf balls on the side. ⁓ Harry: Yeah. Mate, I love it. It's like a little treasure hunt. It's so good. I don't think that's going to make my millions. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Next thing you know mate, you'll be down at the beach soon with one of those metal detectors and stuff like that. Harry: No, if life ever gets to that point, I want someone to put a bullet in my head. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You You Harry: But yeah, whenever we play golf as a family, I always say to them, for every good golf ball you take, you have to take a shit one. So for every Pro V you get, you have to have a Slazinger. ⁓ Yes, exactly. But yeah, so playing a little bit of golf this week has been nice because the weather's been good, but I've also had more time on my hands because I am Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Hahaha And you must play with the crap one. Harry: currently fighting this injury, which I will be completely honest has dragged on a little bit longer than I would. Well, obviously I didn't want to get injured, but ⁓ yeah, I know it's not like I wanted this, yeah, it's definitely dragged on. That's for sure. So it's been ⁓ just over four weeks since I kind of initially had this injury. So four weeks have pretty much... Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You didn't want it in the first place, You Harry: not much running. I'm doing a little bit. This week I managed four runs that were about 30 minutes each. Today was a little bit longer and it's just a bit shit to be honest. Swimming is absolutely fine. The physio told me the other day, was like, yeah, just swim as much as you want. I was like, that's the problem. I don't bloody want to. Yeah, swimming's the worst bit. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I don't want this. I'm Harry: ⁓ So yeah, but swimming's actually feeling pretty good. The cycling is good apart from I found that my ITB flares up if I push into like kind of VO2 type efforts. So I do need to keep it a bit more tempo-y sweet spot kind of stuff. I found anything like 360 watts and under is okay, but anything higher than that, I'm like, does start to be a little bit painful. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Harry: And then running has just been pretty chilled. But I do have an appointment with a sports doctor on this coming Thursday. He's the guy that I used for the health checks I had to get for like the T100. They had like a world triathlon kind of rule that you had to get some heart scan or something. And yeah, yeah. So used him for that also. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, you gotta get your heart, your heart check and stuff, Harry: used him for post South Africa two years ago with all the stomach issues and stuff like that. he's a really sound guy, understands the sport and professional sport. hopefully he'll be able to do, whether it's some sort of like scan on the knee to see where the inflammation is or what he recommends. I don't really know, but it's definitely got to a point now where it's frustrating for sure. And I kind of want someone to actually look at it and be like, Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Harry: this is what you need to do. Because I've seen physios, I've seen, you know, yeah, I've done massage, I've the strength work, I've, yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You ca- I think- You can never get too many opinions, I think, as well. And I always think from a medical standpoint, if you have more than one person look at it and give you a similar diagnostics, you kind of know that, OK, this is what I'm actually dealing with. Whereas until you kind of get to that point, sometimes, yeah, there's no harm in someone from a slightly different... Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: career or like profession kind of giving a you know hopefully a slightly different approach and look at it that a physio potentially wouldn't look at it in that way. Harry: Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely that. And it's, yeah, it's hopefully one of those things where I can figure out pretty soon. But when it comes to racing, yeah, I'm not too sure. I don't really want to think too much about it. ⁓ So yeah, we'll see how it goes. But this, it's been a slow week. Yeah, yeah, exactly, exactly. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha! Mate, there's a long year ahead. Long year ahead. Are you trying to, are you doing, I guess two questions, are you doing any structure or are you kind of just doing the best you can in terms of like trying to like maintain a good level of fitness? Harry: Yes, good question. I would say the swim and the bike program is actually the same as it would be. I don't think it's changed at all, especially the swim. The bike program, I've asked Rob, my coach, to not include any VO2 work. There's a bit more tempo-y kind of stuff included and some easy mileage. Yes, swim and bike is very much a standard structure of what it would be this time of year. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Harry: which is good because it allows me to actually stay focused and maintain good fitness. I would say that I'm maintaining fitness across the board. I wouldn't say I feel like I'm getting fitter just because, yeah, I probably am, but you know when you're just not doing one of the sports, it just feels like you're being a bit of a potato. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. How have you felt like, as well, when I've had niggles and stuff in the past and injuries in the past, ⁓ do you feel that motivation for the other two disciplines slipping as well a little bit? Because it is difficult, if you haven't got a race coming, you know? Harry: Yeah. Yes, it's really hard, isn't it? Because when you're firing on all cylinders and you've got a race coming and everything, it's like motivation is easy. When something slipped, and there's no reason for me to not want to swim or bike. Even today, for example, I did my run, finished at Rob's house, we had a chat, we had a coffee, whatever. The rest of the day I was doing stuff in the garden, which was nice because it was good weather. So I was like building a shed and doing the gardening and stuff like that. But I should have then done like a 90 minute spin, but I decided to go play golf because I was like, I need to take my mind off it and I want to, yeah. Like I didn't miss a session, but like I missed a spin. I should have done it. So it's like, yeah, the motivation definitely does fade a little bit, which is tough for sure. It is tough. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Yeah I guess like you're doing the best you can with the situation you've got and you kind of need the ITB to be in a position where you're ready to kind of take the fitness on. until then you're just like in that kind of position where you're like just stacking as much as you can, stacking fitness that yeah, it doesn't maybe doesn't feel like you're getting fitter, but you're still like, you're still banging weeks back to back and you know, that compounding effect of training definitely helps. Harry: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, like, I mean, this week, I think I ended up doing 22, 22 and a half hours and just over 1000 TSS. So it's not like it's nothing, but it's also like, it's not, it's nothing to be impressed with. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, no, yeah, it's good. yeah, I think for a lot of people listening, probably still eye-watering that you do like over a thousand of TSS in a week and you're not really, and you're not thinking your fitness is getting better. Harry: Yeah, yeah, I mean that is true. Yeah, yeah. But yeah, I mean, I'll tell you what, with the more time off I've got, I've just managed to like spend so much more time on doing bits to the house, doing bits to the garden. But I'm looking forward to barbecue season. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You are so ready. Right, mate. Right, mate. So there was a bit of racing over the weekend. Shall we have a little bit of a deep dive into it? Harry: I can't wait. It's to be so good. Yeah, speaking of barbecues, let's talk about Geelong. Don't Australians, they love a barbecue? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's called a isn't it a brew a brew not a brew us South Africa a bri a bri a bri Yeah, brew I think is South African I Think I think it's a bri is Australian Harry: Is that what they call it? A brie. I have no, is that actually a thing? Are you sure? Bloody, a bloody bribe, mate. Fucking put another shrimp on the barbie. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I tell you what, do have like 4 % of our listeners from Australia, someone hopefully calls us out on this. But mate, yeah. ⁓ Harry: Righto. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Geelong happened over the weekend. ⁓ Did you watch it? Harry: Mate, that was wild. So I'm actually gutted that I didn't stay up for the whole thing because it just started getting interesting. And I was so tired. I went to bed and then I woke up. was like, what the hell? ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I, ⁓ yeah, I guess the thing that, you know, I guess we'll talk about the men's races straight off the bat, but I think the, the kind of headline of the race was having Christian, Jela and Hayden all going head to head. I think that was like a big draw. And then obviously it kind of looked like at the end of the bike that that wasn't going to kind of be the battle we wanted. And then it just delivered so much more. ⁓ Harry: Yeah. Yeah, it just was. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: The highlight still for me was when Christian had now got himself to, sorry, anyone who hasn't watched it, Christian won the race. Yellow was second and Hayden was third. ⁓ But as Christian came past Hayden, Hayden managed to kind of hug him, like hug his shoulder for like maybe like three, four minutes. ⁓ And then there's a section where Christian had his cap forwards and he turned his cap backwards and then... Harry: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: literally like three seconds later just like starts moving away and I'm like that's so badass ⁓ I wish I had that Harry: It was the coolest thing I think I've ever seen in triathlon. So cool. Yeah. Some of the comments on the livestream were hilarious. They were like, I don't know, one of my favorite ones was like, someone said, are Christians running after Hayden? Like he's stolen his wallet. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's like, I am fucking leaving. Here we go. Go on shoot. ⁓ it was... Did you hear what he'd done between ⁓ racing Ironman New Zealand two weeks ago and then this week at this racing Geelong? Did he hear- Harry: You Did he say he did like 2400s on the track, like three of those sessions? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: three sessions on the track, yeah. Harry: It's wild! It's actually wild! Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But also like I think I think it was pro try news posted up a picture. I might be in triathlon now I'm not sure But it had the splits of his like 400s and they weren't they weren't messing around he was running like 66s 65s Harry: that's seriously impressive. Watching him on that race, it's just wild. He sprinted. It looked like he was sprinting the whole thing. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I was, ⁓ I I was disap- like, I'm not gonna lie, when I was, when I was watching the bike, I was a little bit disappointed when he was like hanging off the back, he was like a minute down, and I kinda was like, I'm, I'm watching it, I'm like, ugh, dammit, like, cause I, everyone, like, doesn't matter if you race the guy, doesn't matter if you don't really watch the sport, everyone loves Christian, yeah, yeah. And, ⁓ yeah, just- Harry: Yes. Yeah. You can't help but love him. Yeah. Yeah. And I also... I think, ⁓ I know Hayden ended up coming third, but I love the way he races. It's just hilarious on the bike. People come past him and then he's like, no, you fucking don't. 30 seconds later, he just gets back in the lead. Another one. He just loves being at the front. It's just wild. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, keep going, keep going. Yeah. Nope. Nope. And he was pedaling so hard he snapped his cleat, didn't he? Did you see that? He snapped his cleat off. ⁓ Harry: Yeah, I just love it. Watching him race is just like, you know he's just going balls to the wall. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's ⁓ yeah mate, it's, it's motive, like watching like things like that, it's just motivating. Cause like literally he's just like, doesn't matter. I'm 90 seconds down, like starting the run. I'm just going to absolutely send it and see what happens. Harry: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It was so cool. That was actually the really tough thing about, I went to sleep maybe a few minutes after the little cat turn and I was so hyped. I was so hyped up I couldn't actually sleep. I was like, I was ready to bloody fight a bear. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ no. You are disappointed you're not gonna get your chance to run side by side with him this weekend in Oceanside. Harry: ⁓ mate, there would be no chance of that. It's so cool to see. I remember ⁓ hearing Marinda Carfrae. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: the, ⁓ What did you think of Sokkan? Harry: I remember just hearing Mirinda Carfrae on the live feed saying, this is when Christian was dangling off the back on the bike. He wasn't dangling too far, but he was definitely dangling. She was saying something along the lines of, the last few years have probably taken their toll on Christian and racing multiple distances, how much he races. There is a point maybe that an athlete's body just starts to really slow down and not be able to keep up with the demands of the sport. And I was like, yeah, you know, that makes a lot of sense. And then he just rips out of nowhere. And I was like, fuck yeah. I like, ⁓ I was absolutely loving it. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ was, yeah. Yeah, what a race, what a race. What did you think of the coverage? Did you find that the second loop on the bike, for me, looked a bit chaotic? I know, obviously, we're highlighting the men's race here, but we'll talk about the female race in a second. Harry: So go. There were also, I mean, there was a photo put up on, I can't remember if it was on your left or Iron Man memes or something, but the two-way traffic and Hayden nearly hitting a motor, I mean, he wasn't that close, but he definitely like, yeah, it did look a little bit sketch. Yes, yeah. So that didn't look too much fun. I know that's like the special part of Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. closer than Harry: racing is you get to share the same course as the pros, the age groupers and with the two lap courses, there's not really much you can do about it. definitely, I mean, I don't know if there were any accidents or not, but it did look, I mean, you just on those sections when you're overtaking, you need to have your eyes in the back of your head and just your head on a swivel basically, don't you? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, yeah, no completely. I think it's difficult because every race that's gonna have two loops is gonna have a similar issue, but I think when you've got the out and back sections, you know, even like when we raced 70.3 Swansea as a good example on like our second loop, you are passing people and we do have the media motos being a pro series race. So it's like, we've just got to like everyone, and I guess it's a rule for kind of every race is like, don't. Harry: Nah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Don't ride the race like you own the road and always have that air of like, a bit like you would when you're riding your bike on an open road with cars, always have that little bit of like awareness about, you know, you can't predict what other people are gonna do and that's, know, other riders in this case, but when we're riding day to day, it's what like a car's pulling out of a drive or you always gotta have that awareness of what's going on. Harry: Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, Yeah, yeah, no, absolutely, absolutely. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ but yeah. What did you think of the ⁓ women's race? Harry: I was actually really, really impressed with, is it Sophie Green or is it Steph Green? Sophie Green. Is it Cam Mane's fiance? Yes. I was super impressed with her on the bike, riding with Kat and pulling turns. I thought she had a phenomenal race. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Sophie Green, yeah yeah, Cam Henspartner, She did have, I think, four liters of fluid. Did you notice that? Harry: I did see her struggling with the rear bottle when Kat overtook her. was like, ⁓ just throw it. I don't think she was actually in a litter zone, definitely shouldn't have thrown anything. But I could see she was struggling a little bit with that. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No. I don't actually think she had four liters of fluid on her I think she had four bottles because she was using the Easy Gains like rear mount and stuff But it was just like I was like it just looks like way too much bottles to have on a bike for a 70.3 Harry: Yeah. For a 17.3 it's quite excessive. I guess, I mean, yeah, the aero benefit and everything, but yeah, I hope they weren't all full. Otherwise, that's a lot of extra weight to carry around, isn't it? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But yeah. No, yeah, for sure, for sure. you know, unsurprisingly, in terms of like the the race result, think Kat again just showed how, again, we use the word consistent. I'm not sure she likes that term, but like she just kind of is like she. Harry: Do you not reckon, as she said, she doesn't like the term consistent. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: feel like I've heard the term of like, I think I heard her say about like, you know, obviously being consistent and, but not winning a world championship kind of thing. I think that was like the end of last year. She made a comment being like, I'd rather be less consistent and win a world sort of thing. of something somewhere along those lines. Harry: means. Yeah, fair enough. yeah, each their own. I think she's doing pretty well. I don't think her bank account's empty. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah! But yeah, I think she... Yeah. What did you, um, sorry I was just waiting for Harry to talk but didn't talk. Harry: We're basically just staring at each other. There's a bit of a lag on the feed. There's been a few times when we're just staring at each other like, who's asking the next question? Let's keep talking about the women's field because it was interesting. had obviously Ironman New Zealand pretty recent, what, two weeks ago. mean, it's really impressive that Kat managed to... Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. You Yeah, yeah, two weeks. Harry: managed to back that. I know Christian as well, but you know, had other athletes that did it like Pierre Lecour, had to pull out, which understandably, Ironman New Zealand was his first Ironman. So I can imagine that's affected him a lot more than your seasoned Ironman athletes. But ⁓ Tamara Jewett as well. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: He wasn't doing 20x400 like five days later. Harry: No, no, there's, I mean, I don't know many people that would want to do that. But where did actually, that's a good point, Tamra Jewett, where did she finish? know? She came third. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Third. Yeah, third place. Yeah, she ran away. She was... You missed that. No, she was kind of out of the race a little bit. And then I think it was Penny Slater and another lady were kind of having a good battle. And then, yeah, Tamra just flew past him in the last couple of K to kind of steal that last podium slot. But also what was really cool was... Harry: Shit me, I didn't see that. I missed that. See, that's like super impressive, isn't it? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I Two weeks after an Iron Man, yeah, yeah, very much. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But then you also had Grace Thetk who I think she'd podiumed at this race like 11 times over the last like 11 years and then she came second to Kat and was actually running Kat down which is yeah super impressive to run Kat down. Yeah so. Harry: Wow. Wow. Mate, it's just like, it's actually wild because I remember doing Ironman Leeds last year and then two weeks later I got a chance to do T100 London and I was probably 40 watts off where I should have been. My body just couldn't produce any power and on the run I was running like four minute K's. I felt like I was running through bloody treacle and it... It was horrible. I don't understand how these guys and girls are two weeks later able to bounce back and produce these incredible times. It's insane. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, ludicrous. don't think I'd like that. The other way around is alright. Like I've done like a 70.3 and then like an Iron Man like a week later. And actually that felt quite, that felt quite good. But the other way around, yeah. I don't understand how you can get that leg speed and maybe Christian has mastered it. I don't know. Harry: Yeah. I'm still just blown away by his race. It was so cool to see, but I just don't... I was chatting to Flory, Leon's wife, earlier because I think I'm going to have to look after their bloody dog when they're in America. She was saying that Leon was watching the race and... Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha Hahaha Harry: He, you know, Leon's obviously an incredible athlete, but he was watching what Christian was doing and he was like, I don't see myself ever being able to do something like that. And I don't think he says that about anyone. Like he looks at like Hayden or other guys, other world-class athletes. And, you know, he thinks, ⁓ yeah, I could do that. And I think you kind of have to, if you want to be at the top, you have to have that like self-belief that's almost like delusional. But he even said he watched Christian, he was like, I don't ever see myself being able to do something like that. Like the way he's just sprinting the whole thing is unbelievable. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Do you not remember, I think it was 2018 when there was that epic run battle at 70.3 Worlds and I Jan ran a 106 or a 107 and I think I remember, yeah, South Africa, And I remember Lionel Sanders basically put a YouTube video out the week later being like he woke up in the middle of the night to look at the results. Harry: Is this South Africa? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: and he saw that Jan had run a 106 and then Lionel was like, I can never beat him. How can I beat him? can never beat- I can't run it. I can't run a 106. So, yeah, there's something about that. It's like a big warning shot, isn't it, to everyone being like, don't mess with me kind of thing. Harry: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, like as soon as you see Christian put his cat backwards, we're basically f**ked. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You far as he'd not just knock it off his head push it off Harry: Yeah, yeah. Thing is, it would be so funny if one of us tries this in our next races. You just put the cat backwards and then you just get dropped. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You start with it backwards. Nightmare, nightmare. Harry: Just like, dispatched. ⁓ yeah, yeah that's true. Don't try that on the bike. Don't put your helmet on backwards. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Do a... Malachi. Right. Harry: Yeah, yeah, yeah. So yeah, that was pretty cool to watch. So what do you think? Going into this weekend, obviously we got Oceanside, few athletes that have raced, namely Christian Blumenfeld. ⁓ What are your predictions for Oceanside? Obviously we've got the start list that's come out, the men's field. I mean, obviously the women's field looks very stacked, but the men's field has got a ridiculous number. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah Harry: of people on the start line. what do you make of that? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah, I think it's a super exciting race. ⁓ I think it's one that like, it's normally the season opener in North America. So it's interesting because they had that Dallas race a couple of weeks ago. ⁓ But this is kind of the real big hitting one in North America. And obviously you've got Christian flying over from Australia, but he's being joined by Gustav ⁓ Casper. And basically... Harry: Yeah. Mm. Peace. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I'd say the majority of people, and especially in the men's side, who are really targeting the pro series this year, because you've got people like Jonas Strongberg, Appleton, Leon's Racing, Ben Canute, Hogan Hart, the list is cam worth, the list is ridiculous. And then obviously on the women's side of the field, you've got Taylor Lipp flying over from Australia from doing T100 last weekend. Harry: Yes. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ Solveig, Paula Finley, Jackie Haring. So again, like some really big hitters. I think what might, like guess we could, we could probably talk for ages about like how we think dynamics are gonna work and stuff like that. But I thought what might be more fun is if we kind of just like maybe pick a podium, male and female, and maybe like a wild card in both and then Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: maybe talk about why we think they're gonna be on the podium ⁓ and then also why we've selected our wild card. It might just be that we wanna shout someone out. It might be that we actually think they can podium ⁓ or win the race. ⁓ I've really put you on the spot here. Are you ready to go? ⁓ Harry: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, nice. Well, so you can probably see that I've got my phone out. I'm looking at the start list now because I want to make sure I don't miss anyone. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Ugh. Harry: So I've just got on the Tri Pole Athlete Instagram because their stuff is decent. So, okay, so I need to pick a podium for men and women and I need to pick a wild card for both, yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yep, that's the way I am as well. Let's go the women first. So do a podium and a wildcard. Harry: Okay, da da da da da. Okay, okay, okay, okay. Fuck, this is actually really quite difficult. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's pretty hard, isn't it? Harry: This is really difficult because there's some really incredible names on here. Okay, so I'm going to say third place, Paula Finlay. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Nice, okay. Harry: I'm going to say second place. ⁓ Solvig and first place I feel like Taylor Nibb could have that. ⁓ And then Wildcard is an interesting one. I'm gonna say... This is so random. I'm gonna say Marta Sanchez ⁓ because I... Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay, wild card. Harry: met her in ⁓ Friseuse at T100 and she was really nice and so shout out to Martha Sanchez. That's the only reason we need. Go on, what do you reckon? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: because you're best mates. No, that works, that works, that works. Nice, ⁓ right, I think third place, Siv Bendix Madsen. I think she's gonna absolutely send it on the bike and she might be being ran down by multiple people but I think she's gonna hold on to that podium. Second place, think Paula Finley. And then I can't see past Taylor, Taylor Nibb for the win. Like I think something would have to... Not something would have to happen, but I think she would have to be on a slightly off day and someone else would have to have like their best day sort of thing. In terms of wild cards, Korykown. Harry: Yep. ⁓ no. Yes, because it is still a strong bikers course, so she will have the benefit there. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, and then yeah, well Harry: I was just saying, yeah, the battle, yeah. Go on, go on, what's your wild card? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Wild card I think Christian Casper, I think she was a short course. I think she went to the last Olympics for the USA and I just Yeah, I just think that I haven't seen a do load of long course race I think she has actually won a 70.3 before But I think she's relatively new to the game and she could be one of those people that Harry: Okay. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Maybe not necessarily finished on the podium, but we see her in the top five or six ⁓ come the end of the race maybe. Harry: Yeah. Yeah, I like that. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Right mate, men. Harry: This is really hard because there's so many names. Isn't there like, there's 80 bloody guys and all of them are really good. Okay, so I'm gonna take, all right, this is gonna be crazy, but I'm gonna take Christian out of the equation because I feel like backing up what he did is gonna be nearly impossible. I hope that he proves me wrong. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: There's 80 odd people. Yes. Okay. Harry: I really do, but I'm going to say he doesn't get on the podium. I hope that I'm wrong, but I'm just going to say it now. So let's go third place. think, okay, I think I want to say Jonas Schomburg, third place. I'm going to say second. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay, a fat... Yeah, yeah, fat. That's a good pic. Harry: Yeah, I mean, he could probably do better than that. But second place, I want to say. ⁓ God, I've just seen Benito Lopez. I'm going to go third place, Benito Lopez, second place, Jonas Schomburg and first place, Gustav Eden. And I'm going to say my wild card is going to be. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ mate, that's a big pick. Harry: I'm gonna say my wild card is gonna be big up Josh Lewis. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Nice. Yes. Like it. I'm a fan. Harry: Go on, what do you reckon? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ Cool, I'm gonna completely disagree with your picks then. Because I think Christian is gonna feature heavily. ⁓ Right, third place. Third place is the one I'm hot. I think third place Sam Long. Because he's Sam Long. And I think... Harry: How dare you? He probably will. Whoa okay yeah Sam Long is Sam Long Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And also with the 20 meter draft, think he'll have more of an opportunity just to kind of tear through the field a little bit more. Whereas I think with the 12 meter he was always battling groups, whereas I think he won't have to battle the groups as much. Second place, I'm going Casper Storms. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And then first place, KB. So, Norwegian 1-2. I think Gustav's gonna miss the podium. I think he's gonna be about fourth or fifth, I think. But, yeah, I think he's... He's not my wild card. My wild card is someone we both know. And someone who, if he plays his cards right all day, I think can finish top... eight in this race. It is... Harry: Okay. Go on. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Matthew Collins. Harry: See, you know what? He could do very well. If he plays his cards right, if he's sensible, he avoids making bad decisions. He could actually, because he's a hell of a runner and he could, yeah, he could do really well. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ he can fly mate, he can fly air. Yeah, so think for me he's a wild card because he had that epic race last year at, oh can't remember, the 70.3 in North America but he basically was running sort of 45 seconds back from Sam Long and Trevor Foley and was pretty much matching them, like pace-wise. I think he ran like a 110, 111 that day. So yeah, I think if he looks after himself all day... Harry: Hmm Yeah. Yeah. He's quick, yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: and he can get to the run in a competitive position and then unleash a good run. think, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. Top eight, yeah. Harry: Yeah. Yes. Also, there are so many good guys on the start line. You've got that, what's his name? Marius, I'm going to butcher his surname, but the guy who's the Norwegian lad who was out in Lanza with the other Norwegians. Uber, Uber biker. mean, unbelievably good and a great runner as well. ⁓ I think he swims like a bit of a potato, but he could be great. You've got Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Yeah. Harry: Jan Stratman who's obviously bloody incredible all round, like Jason West phenomenal runner, Ari Clow great runner, although he might get some blisters and have to Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I was literally, mate, was literally, I was just gonna ask you that. I was like, do you think our ex podcast host on the Triathlon Hour, do you think Ari Clow has sorted out his blisters for this weekend? Harry: You might still have some poorly feet. So Ari, if you're listening to this, put some plasters on and suck it up. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Go get yourself a pedicure. Harry: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, man. So yeah, mean, that's going to be an incredible race to watch. I'm still looking at the start list. Yeah, it's going to be hectic though. So what do you think is going to happen on the bike course? Because, Geelong had some fantastic athletes there. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: you There's just names on names, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. Harry: but it's still compared to this was quite a small field. It'll be interesting to see what the 20-meter giraffe rule is like at Oceanside in a race where you've got so many people. I think the assumption is from people having watched the last two races that have had the 20-meter rule, that the swim doesn't really matter anymore. It's a bike runner race now, but I feel like- in a race where you've got this many people, actually if you don't have a very good swim, it's going to be very hard to funnel your way through that many people. But what are your thoughts on something like that? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, I think we haven't really seen it in this size of film and that's the biggest issue, but I kind of think that if you have big watts and you're kind of confident in your ability to kind of put your head down in time trial, I think like someone like a, I'm thinking like a someone like a Sam Long, for example, if he sees a group of 10 guys in front of him, Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: because they're 20 meters space now, it's less surgy, it's less dynamic, people aren't passing all the time. So I'm thinking maybe he just pulls out into the middle of the road, not literally in the middle of the road, but like into the side of the lane, you know, starts drilling 380 watts and just like doesn't have to like sprint past anyone, just literally just like, yeah, just kind of glide through over a period of like five to 10 minutes and kind of... Harry: Yes. take all of them. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You know, because you've got, think it's like 45 seconds per person, isn't it? Or something like that. Harry: Yeah, exactly. if you time it well, that's the thing, you don't necessarily have to rush. You can take the full 45 seconds, so just do as much as you need to get past them within 45 seconds, basically. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mmm. And just be super, if he's super smooth about it, I think maybe it makes it easier. It's going to be interesting to watch though. Harry: Maybe. Yes. I think it'll be really interesting because it will slowly then get a picture of how this 20-meter draft rule does affect different races because I can't really say from the last two races that it's made much for difference in my opinion. don't know, you might think differently. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, I think people are having to ride their bikes pretty honestly. But also I think like, you you and I have been involved in these races for the last few years and everywhere, not everyone, but like the 99 % of people are all pushing good power. They're all pretty aero. Like I think for the most part it is just like, it's making potentially the races a little bit cleaner. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Or like, yeah, like you kind of have to do your own thing a little bit more. ⁓ but I don't think I ultimately, think the majority of people who were winning races in 2025, just cause they've now changed this draft room. don't think it negates their ability to win again. think that, you know, people, you know, it might give slightly different opportunities for slightly different dynamics and whatever. But I think, you know, the, the cream of the Harry: Yeah. Yes. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Was it that the cream always rises to the top? I dunno what the signal was. Yeah, something like that. But yeah, like, your Christian Blumfelds are still gonna... Something about cream. Harry: think that's the saying, but we'll just go with it. It's the Rebut Cream. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And on that note... Harry: Yeah Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But yeah, I think it's gonna be a good watch. It's gonna be a good watch But yeah, just curious it's getting late for both of us now a cream joke Harry: Why am I still laughing at that? thinking of so many inappropriate things to say right now, but I will, I will hold myself back. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Right mate, we're gonna get a guest on next week, I don't know who's gonna be on, but we're gonna get a guest on and ⁓ yeah, we look forward to it. Harry: Okay, so... Yeah, yeah, we'll get someone exciting on. If anyone wants to listen to someone ⁓ particular, then shoot me or Andy a message and we can try and butter up some people. Maybe we'll get on ⁓ Joe Skipper and talk about the fact that he... Do you want to release this information? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Well, he said to me he's not going, but I don't know if that's fact or if it's just, you know, the day of the week. But yes, anyway, drop that news and ⁓ thanks Harry, I'll see you next week. Harry: Okay, cool. I don't know if that's public. You heard it here first guys. I'll see you in a bit. Bye bye. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Right, I've stopped I think.
