Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Hi guys and welcome back to the Uncomfortable Triathlon podcast. I am one of your hosts, Andrew Horsfield Turner, ⁓ and I am joined today not only by my normal co-host, but also we have a special guest. ⁓ I'm not gonna give too much away, but these two guys I'm chatting to right now are pretty big deals. I think they finished ninth and thirteenth place at Challenge Saloo, which is pretty big deal in the triathlon world. ⁓ Now... Harry: Thank Hahaha Malachi: Watch out. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But no jokes side, obviously joined here by Harry Palmer as normal. How you doing Harry? Harry: Yeah good mate, I mean well as you've alluded to they're not such a good result at SLOVE but it was a funny day, it was a fun experience and I didn't get beaten by a man in a bikini trisoo so it actually was a success. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And then that leaves us on really well. Harry, do you want to introduce our guest? Harry: Yeah, well, I mean, I can't imagine he needs much introduction because I think all of our listeners will know exactly who he is. And if you don't, then educate yourself because he's probably about to get cancelled very soon on social media. Of course, we're talking about Malachy Cashmore. So, yeah, cheers for joining us, mate. How are you feeling? How are sensations? Malachi: I'm actually pretty good. I had a bit of a sprint finish with thin, thin errands, but thankfully I was limited by cramps. So my actual body is all right, but like my cramping muscles are pretty sore, like down the insides of my legs. But in my actual self, I feel like pretty fresh, ready to go again. Gonna try and beat Harry next weekend for the second time, cause I failed last week. Harry: Hehehehehe Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Good man. Right, so obviously the main theme of this episode, our previous episode was about just the challenge to kind of Harry's perspective of how the race might go. ⁓ Let's quickly touch on you, Harry, and your race before we then, the main theme of the show is gonna be Malachy, ⁓ learning a little bit more about him as an athlete, but also his perspectives of the race. But Harry, talk to me how Salou went. Malachi: nice that's my best theme let's just talk about me to start with we don't need to hear about Harry really do we Harry: Yeah, why are we talking about me? gives a shit? ⁓ Yeah, there's gonna be a YouTube video as well so you can you can listen to it again. Fucking brilliant. Yeah, okay, let's- Malachi: I want to hear it again for the millionth time please. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Go on Harry, blow by blow, what happened? Malachi: can't wait. Harry: Let's make this like 30 seconds. I run into the water with Jack Hutchins, beat him into the water, because I'm an absolute bloody legend. I then... I beat Malachy into T1, which is fantastic, but then he beats me out of T1 because I'm a potato. I then ride past Malachy at 800 watts thinking that I'm Tede Pagaccia, but then I blow up after 20 minutes because I realize I'm a fucking pussy. I then get overtaken by Will Draper. who gives me a little wave and then fucks off into the distance. I then cramp up 20 minutes from coming into T2, coming into T2, running like a bag of dicks and have the worst run of my life. And in the last lap, I'm just shitting myself that a man in a bikini tri suit is gonna overtake me, but luckily he doesn't. I'm sure at some point this year, maybe I will see the back end of his tri suit, but fingers crossed I don't. And that's my race report done and dusted. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I do have a couple of questions. obviously the expectation was a little bit, you know, obviously you were in it to try and win it. I know we obviously on this podcast have documented quite a lot. the injury early in this kind of year, 2026, do you feel that... Malachi: That was actually pretty good. Harry: Fuck! No questions! Yep. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: the fitness is in a good position? you think that tactically you made mistakes? Yeah, talk to me. Harry: Yeah, I think the swim was good, but so the swim feels like in a great place the bike I think I rode I rode to a fitness level that I'm not quite at yet. So I think I just I over biked ⁓ early on and I was like I was kind of hoping there'll be more motos at the front of the race to be honest, then I could just get pulled away from people and and there wasn't like, ⁓ this is shit. So I definitely over biked. And it's unfortunate because my running's been going quite well, but maybe I just felt the lack of consistent, you know, week in, week out training. ⁓ I've had a bit of, yeah, up and I feel like one step forward, two steps back this season. So I need to kind of turn that around and just get some consider consistent mileage under my belt. But yeah, I mean, that run was horrific. but yeah, I mean, it is what it is. I race for the win. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Malachi: It's quite a tough course though. It's a tough course to get right because you never really get into a rhythm because there's so many like little dips down like where the water drainage ditches are on the seafront and there's like a thin layer of sand on the whole course so you never really get traction. if you're gonna have a bad run you think ⁓ it's just flat like momentum run but actually it's kind of tricky to get something out. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Just, just, just... Harry: Yeah, it is tough. Yeah. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Just slipping everywhere. Harry: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I just... Every time I pass Belinda I just wanted to stop for little hug and then keep going. was ready for Malachi at the finish line, that's for sure. ⁓ Got a little peck out of it. ⁓ Malachi: But then we all... Andrew Horsfall-Turner: She probably had her arms wide open ready for it as well. Malachi: Thank You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ Did you? Fair play. Right, ⁓ Let's ⁓ Let's move away from Harry now and Harry can kind of join me in a little bit. I think we want to chat a bit more about Malachi as a person in a bit. Malachi: ⁓ yeah, I got a little kiss. much to my girlfriend's disliking Harry: Fuck the prize money! ⁓ Malachi: I had my eyes on the price, don't worry. Harry: Okay. Good. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But Malekali, let's go straight into the race. What kind of motivated this bikini outfit, try suit, and then also what happened in the race and how was your race? Harry: You Malachi: Well, the bikini trisuit so about six months ago I was in the wind tunnel doing some testing for like a Other bike company. It was like a prototype thing. But as the last run I just had my speedos in my bag So I thought I'd be pretty funny to see if they're more error I thought they might be because it's like, you know, just pure skin. It might be faster and it wasn't it was like four watts slower than like cycling kit and then Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mm. Malachi: I thought again on top of that it would be kind of cool to do a race in the Speedos like they used to do in like the 90s with the crop top and the Speedos but you're not allowed to do that anymore because you've got to cover yourself up. And then that kind of just sat in the back of my mind for a couple of months and then just at the start of this year I signed with TriFit so they make TriSuits, custom TriSuits and as part of the deal I said that I wanted a bikini print TriSuit making for this race. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha ha. Malachi: so that I could still race in a bikini but be just as aero. So that was a thought behind the bikini. It was a lot in the making. The skin tone on the screen matched my skin quite nicely, but obviously in person it was quite the way off. And I think I've got a bit of tan since being in Spain. So maybe there's a version two coming, but I think it looking more stupid got more attention than it looked like. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, yeah. Harry: It's so bad. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. I was gonna say the fact that the skin didn't match almost made it look better because it was like, was really obvious, it was like, it's a tri suit still. Malachi: actually good. Harry: It was so shit. Malachi: So when we were filming, so when I got it out of the bag, I was down on the beach front and in Saloo it's just full of like, you know, larger British tourists. They've all got their bellies out and they're massive fat British tourists. I put this bikini on and we're filming me in slow motion running out of the water and there's literally like a crowd of people watching and like there's a group of us all there filming it and no one will stand anywhere near me. Harry: You're allowed to call them fat. Yeah. Malachi: I'm sorry. It's like, felt embarrassed to be there. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: That's so funny. Malachi: ⁓ Sorry, my app was just started. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No worries. ⁓ you still there? Harry: ⁓ we've lost him. He's still here. Perfect. Malachi: Sorry. Well that still worked. Sorry if you're listening to this. You can crop that out can't you? ⁓ is it? Okay. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: That's actually better. The audio, your audio is actually improved. Harry: No, let's leave it in. Fuck it. Malachi: My air pods died. If anyone wants to sponsor me some air pods, they run out after an hour, which is like right when you're getting into the hardest bit of your interval workouts on the turbo and then the music stops, you're like, ⁓ right, where was I? Yeah, so we got the, we got the bikini suit and then the race. I was also thinking, ⁓ I could probably get top six, maybe not win, but I came sixth last year and I thought I'm in like significantly better shape than I was. Harry: fuck's sake! Malachi: So I thought, well, Harry's going to beat me, Will Draper's going to beat me, Jack Hutchers is going to beat me. And then after that, was kind of like, could maybe have a go, but it turns out I could not have a go. I had my heart set on like the front pack and I think I killed myself a bit too much to try and stay there hanging on the back. Like in my mind, I was... Harry: again. Mm. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mm. Malachi: I was in the pool with Harry days before and I was dropping that guy. ⁓ Harry: Mate, your pool swimming is unbelievable. I was saying to Fred at the pool today, I was like, fuck me, Malachi swims like an absolute fish in the pool. I did say to Fred, was like, in the pool he swims like Tarzan, in open water he swims like Jane. Malachi: Yeah, it's actually not fair. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Hahaha Malachi: Yeah, I don't know. I'm not sure what it is. I don't know if it's my sighting or I think it's mostly my placement of where I am on people because I think if you if you set me out on that same swim course with no one else in the race straight time trial I think I'd probably go to same speed or maybe quicker But I just start off so hard and then I never recover and I just think I'm rubbish at drafting So even though it was Harry: Yeah. Yeah, it'd be good. Yeah. I do think the beach start as well like gases you, doesn't it? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, I hate them, yeah. Malachi: It does kill you and the Aussie exit. I don't know. I'm sure it's the same for everyone, but I feel like I'm particularly because in the swim I don't kick at all. Like my kicks a little crossover one beat per stroke. So there's no blood in my legs whatsoever. So I don't think that helps as a blood shunting point of view when you go to run out the seam max effort. Harry: Yeah. ⁓ Yeah No. You got no blood in your legs, you're like, brilliant. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. I think there's a conversion as well, isn't there? Sorry, Karen. I think trying to convert your pool into open water, I think it's not as easy as just the swimming. I'm assuming as well, you probably train most of the time in short course meters. So there's a consistency element. Oh, okay, fair enough. Okay. Malachi: But even saying that, I s- How'd you mean? Probably mostly 50 at the moment. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: So I was going say there's a consistency of like... Malachi: Yeah, and I'm even better at the 50. Harry: with bike helmets on as well. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But yeah, do think there's something in it to convert your to open water and I think as you both kind of alluded to, faster pool swimming doesn't always translate to faster open water swimming. Malachi: Yeah, in error helmets. No, ice cream? Yeah. It's really frustrating, like I was gonna go on to say I was still like second out of transition so it's not a bad swim but Harry: Your T1 was bloody rapid, mate. Malachi: Yeah, I don't know what you were all doing with your bags and all that, cause I didn't even think it was that quick. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: hehe Harry: I dunno, just... yeah. I mean, I was just... I thought I was moving quite quickly, but then I fucking turn around and there's some guy in a bloody bikini in front of me. like, ah, for fuck's sake! No. Wasn't even a thong bikini as well, mate. At least tease me a little bit. Malachi: Nothing worse than that, is there? Yeah, you know, but it didn't take long for you to come flying past me though. As soon as we went up the first hill. I thought, I'm sat comfy here. Yeah, I thought I was in, I thought I had the win. I thought I was going to win that thing. Second place coming out of transition over the top of the hill, still in second, then you come past me like, like a commuter. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Hahaha Harry: That was quite... Okay, I regret that. You Malachi: You know, like when you overtake them guys on the bike path and they're on a line bike. That's what it felt like when Harry overtook me. Harry: You I was bluffing so hard. Yeah, yeah. Just said too bad, brother. Oh, man. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Malachi: And then just went backwards from there. You're just pulling straight face, nose breathing. But yeah, then so the group rode away from me on the bike and I think I did like 325 watts for the first hour and they put like a minute into me. So I don't know what they were doing at the front or if I was just sat bolt upright with my head in the air. But whatever I was doing, it didn't work. And then kind of chilled out for the second half because I realized I wasn't going to make it. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay. Harry: You Malachi: Probably to the top six or anything. So I thought I'll just save some energy and have a good run And the run was all right. I think I had too many gels. I don't know what calculation I did But I worked it out the night before I was like 300 grams on the bike I did it next to Harry and he was like nodding away But that wasn't the correct calculation Because I put ten gels in my bottle, so that's 400 grams Harry: You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, yeah. Harry: That is a lot. Malachi: ⁓ and I felt pretty bloated. I got it off by a hundred grams. I had a bit of cramp on the run, but it wasn't the worst run I've ever did. Yeah. But yeah, I'm not sure what calculation I did, some kind of autism calculation. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: felt pretty but yeah. Harry: You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: miles off. Harry: Yeah, I'm not gonna say anything about Malachi being autistic because we'll get cancelled again and we'll get called out by stupid people. No naming names, but Malachi is not autistic by the way. Well, undiagnosed but something's wrong with him. Malachi: Not knowing any names. you Well, we're not sure, are we? We need to get a test done. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: So. Malachi: Definitely dropped as a baby. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: So talk to me, talk to Malachi about obviously aspirations of trying to get this like top six. In terms of that first hour, I thought you were 13th. Harry: Yeah. Malachi: and then doubling it and coming 12. Harry: Double it and give it to the next person. Malachi: ⁓ was I? ⁓ even worse? ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You obviously, you think that the first hour was pretty decent on the bike. ⁓ I guess, because we've got someone who was at the front of the race for a little bit longer, Harriet, how far off was he power wise? Like what was the watts? Malachi: Yeah. Harry: Not much longer mate. Well I can tell you I can go on my training peaks now but I mean so I feel like for the first half an hour I was probably at 3.45 ish, 3.50 maybe ⁓ and then and then it definitely dropped off massively after that so let me just give you I mean sort of yeah Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay. Malachi: But you still stayed with the front group though, didn't you? So it dropped off collectively. It wasn't like you just got spat out the back. Harry: So, yeah. So for the first half an hour, my normalised power was 345. And then after that, so from the first half an hour, so the next half an hour, it was 330. And then after that, it probably tailed off again to like 320. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay. Harry: 313. Ouch. Goddamn! That is not how to approach race people! Fuck me, man, that guy can ride a bike. Yeah, I don't like WipDraper anymore. Malachi: voice. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Nice, ⁓ How much harder was World Raper going then do you think? ⁓ To obviously like, well you put like four minutes into everyone didn't you? Malachi: was insane. I was so, cause he caught me before he caught Harry. I was on like halfway through the first lap and I was like, well, he's won that because if he's already caught me halfway through one lap, then he's going to win. Cause he just, it was insane. I tried to stay on his wheel for like three minutes and I was doing like 400 watts and I was like, well, there's no point even trying yet. And we were going downhill. Yeah. Harry: Hmm. Yeah. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's gonna catch everyone. Harry: Mmm... Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Really? Oh wow. Harry: It was... it's so funny, like, he comes past me, gives me a like, token wave, and I was like, oh for fuck's sake, here we go. And I think I... Malachi: Thank Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Was it a wave like, Harry come with me or Harry like, see you later mate. Harry: No, I think it was a wave of, know you're not gonna be able to hold my wheel, so go fuck yourself. So yeah, I tried to stay with him as well and I was like, wow, this guy, he looks so good on a bike as well. It's like, oh man, he's just, yeah. I fancy him, I do fancy him. Yeah, it's got a bit of a man crush going on. So yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Hahaha Malachi: It looks even better off the bike. ⁓ That guy. No, he does look good on a bike though. Even on a coup. Nothing down to coup, but he makes them cool. Harry: Even on a coup, which is pretty ugly, but yeah, he does make them cool. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, he rides it fast. Yeah, for sure. For sure. Harry: Yeah, fair play to him. that was, yeah. So what was, okay, so getting off the bike Malachy, what was your head space like? Were you like, ⁓ I can run a decent half marathon and still be in the game? Or was it, I've just smashed 400 grams of carbs and I might shit myself? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: haha Malachi: I'd say it definitely some of that. Although I don't... Because I had so much carbs it didn't even like start processing so I basically felt like a fat British tourist has just been given insane fitness. Like imagine like the football shirt wearing pumped up belly dad has now got the ability to run a 110 half off the bike. That's how I felt. I was like here we go. None of it's digested but I'm ready for a quick one. Harry: You Yeah. You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha ha. Harry: you Malachi: But yeah, think because I had so all of that sat there, I was talking to Finn about it as well. And he was like, for every gram of carb, you need like three grams of water. I don't know if that's right or if I'm just making that up or maybe it's salt. Anyway, my legs were just like every dead turn. I was like super careful because I could feel if I went around the corner a bit too hard, I was going to cramp. But when I was like away on the flat, I was actually running pretty good, but I was like balancing out. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Mmm. Harry: Yeah. Malachi: how fast I can run without cramping. think I just need to do my calculations a bit better. But it's still, it wasn't a bad run. I think it's like a 1.13, which is what I've only done pro racing one year, but it's one of my better runs. So I can't be too disappointed, but I can because I came 13th or 12th whatever it was. That's nothing to, I've actually set my lock screen. So when was it? Two weeks ago I did Valencia. Harry: Mmm. Malachi: and had the best performance like I've ever done and I came 18th. So I've set my lock screen as 18th out of 59 and then with a caption above it, you happy with that? And it's actually got, it's got me super motivated. I've been adding on training to every workout I've done since, which is maybe why I race so bad, but you know, it'll all pay off in the end hopefully. Yeah, exactly. You're in a Schomburg style. Harry: You More is more, mate. More is more. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: More is more to this knot. Harry: Yeah, exactly. Yeah. ⁓ mate, that is funny. Malachi: But yeah, think overall it's not like, it's not a bad race, but I just think it didn't represent my fitness as I'd like it to. But you always say that because type A personality, just... Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, I was surprised as well with the depth of like, I know me and Harry kind of spoke about it obviously like a bit of like a battle of the Brits with the amount of Brits out there. ⁓ But I was quite surprised with like how close the like density of like the top, even like the top 20 were because like you boys were still like what Harry you were like what six, seven minutes off the win and like that's like still like top 10. Harry: Exactly, yeah. Malachi: Yeah, Brits do Yeah. Harry: Yeah, I don't know. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: But in some races they blow out massively and it just really didn't insolute. Time wise. Harry: Yeah, it was pretty dense. Malachi: think compared to previous years, this is definitely the most competitive year, I think. Because last year, think Tom Davis, he only beat me by like four minutes and I came sixth. Harry: Mmm. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay. Fair. Malachi: So compared to that, it's definitely a higher level than last year. Harry: It does kind of go to show like you'd think of Challenge Salute as a bit of a, not like a weaker race, but just like a race that you go and you could get a decent result and not think that some of the best guys are there. But you show up and there's maybe like three or four guys that are ranked in the top 30 in the world. And it's like, there's actually no such thing as like a soft race now really is there? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, never. Malachi: I mean, yeah, challenge saloon. You don't really expect that, you? I don't think that people watch... Like, you've got all these tourists lining the course, and they don't even know who's running past them. Harry: No. No, exactly. Malachi: Like they don't even realise some of the best people in the world are just like running down, they're sat on their sun lounger, drunk out of their minds. Like, go on, go on. They don't even know. Harry: What a life! They have no idea! Alright so, Salou was an interesting experience I'd say for both of us. You're obviously pretty new to pro racing, obviously not new to the sport. Talk us through what your approach is for this year. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha Malachi: as part of the fun of the race, would recommend. Harry: in pro racing? What's your ideas of what you want to achieve? Have you got overarching goals or is it just go to some races and just try and slap it and have a good time and wear a bikini? Malachi: ⁓ It's a mixture of both because yeah, it's my second year as a pro. The first one, like I had no expectations at all. I was like, I'm probably just going to come at the back in all of these. Well, I didn't. was like mid pack, got some prize money. It was all right, better than I expected. But this year, yeah, I think it's just the same as I did last year because I'm thinking it's more four years ahead is when I'm actually going to be any good. which is kind of depressing, like four years until, yeah, like, might start winning something. So I'm basically just going around racing whatever I like whilst trying to not become bankrupt and keep it going for as long as you can. I think that's part of the thing as a pro, you've got to, yeah, literally paycheck to paycheck. But yeah, you've got to like, I'm 23 and most of the best people are like, what, 26. Harry: Mm. Mm. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mm. Harry: Living the dream. Ha Malachi: Allegra. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I think we might have lost him there. Malachi: So I've got a bit of time yet. ⁓ Harry: He's gone. It's his day to route. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: He did say to everyone listening, he did say that he is on internet and he said that at some point the internet might give up on him. ⁓ he's back, are you back? Harry: Boat, is he back? Malachi: ⁓ dear. Yeah, I think I'm back. I don't know where I cut off. just... Harry: Hahaha Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You said you were 23 years old and then you just went. Malachi: I think my data ran out. Yeah, that's the end. See you guys. That's enough for today. Harry: Yeah, yeah, cheers and bye. Yeah, yeah, just keep talking mate. Malachi: ⁓ should I just carry on? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah yeah, crack on mate, crack on. Malachi: Yeah, like I'm 23 and like most of the Your prime is like 26 to what 35 maybe even higher than that like how long how old's Pat Lang? like low 40 yeah, and he's oh Sorry, I mean 45 Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: 39, 40? Maybe. Fuck off mate. By the way, I'm not nearly 40, it's fine. Harry: Andy's nearly 40 mate. I'm just kidding. Malachi: But yeah. ⁓ So yeah, for like this year, I'm like, yeah, just more experience, try to stay at the front. I'm lucky because I'm already at the front of the races. I've just got to work out how to stay there. think if I was like, it's easier to see how I could stay at the front of a race compared to someone who's coming out three or four minutes back and you're like, how am I even going to get ever get there? So that's quite motivating, even if it does cost me a lot of effort. I know I can do it. Harry: Mmm. Yeah. Yeah. Mm. Malachi: in the swim I made. So now I just need to, yeah, more experience riding in the pack, get the runtime down. Yeah, just keep going, I guess. I think my ⁓ end goal is to get to Kona and just, you know, be in the mix. Be in the mix of the women's field. Harry: Yeah, mate. win it yeah yeah yeah yeah that's probably quite difficult Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, be competitive. In your bikini. Malachi: I want to win Kona as a woman. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's not easy. Malachi: Um, but yeah, that's more like, yeah, that probably still wouldn't be able to do that. Um, I don't think I could beat Taylor Nibb. Oh yeah. So I can, what's the word for it? Extra talk about this. don't know what the natural word is. So in 2022 at the Utah world champs, I finished within three seconds of Taylor Nibb. That was as an age group, but in that year I was the fastest woman in the world. Harry: Yeah No. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Oof. Harry: Nice! Malachi: So it would be cool to like revisit that at Kona and see if I could beat the fastest woman in the world, whoever that might be on the day. But I've already made it. It was a few months ago, but that's why I already had it in my head. I was just regurgitating the script. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Hehehehe Harry: There's a video in that somewhere, mate. Okay. So good. Well, that's a good transition, actually. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, I really like what you said though. No, carry on mate. I was just going to talk a little bit about what Malachi said about just like his age and the experience he's getting before we, know where we're going to get ahead soon, but yeah, I think it's pretty fun, I guess, when you make the step up to racing pro with a good swim background, ⁓ like instantly kind of like in Harry: ⁓ go on. Yeah, yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: the race, like regardless of the race you go to. think sometimes you see a lot of pros who kind of get their pro license and they step up and the swim say their weakness. And as Malachi kind of alluded to, you're kind of trying to work out how to even get yourself into the race to start with. Whereas, you know, if you have a bit of a swim background, you're there and you can actually experience it. And yeah, I guess like from my perspective over last few years racing pro, I've been in the race on the swim. Malachi: . Andrew Horsfall-Turner: and the bike and I'm still trying to work out the run. But Malachi obviously is kind of working that out for himself and yeah, got a long term plan which sounds pretty exciting I think as well. Malachi: It's actually quite nice. So I came from like the outlaw racing in the UK and you know, one athlete every six seconds. So for quite a good swimmer and Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Malachi: Well, maybe 18 year old Malachi wasn't the most powerful on a bike at whatever kilograms he was, not very many. But you're like, you're straight away out on the swim and you're in a lead by like a minute or two out the water. But then you move up to the pro level and it's like, ⁓ finally there's some people to actually race against. Because before you just get smashed, overtaken by these big, insanely strong age group men on the bike. And you're just sat there, similar to how I felt with Harry coming past me at the weekend. Harry: Hmm. Mmm. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You ⁓ Harry: You Malachi: But by like, you know, bricklayer Dave on his nice canyon, I'm just like, man, this is so depressing. But you move up to the... Yeah, it's not fair. But obviously I've got a bit more bike power than I did. So now I've got some people to swim with, some people to have a bit of fun with on the bike. I think that is one of the problems with the pro license criteria in the UK. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Smashing out 400 watts. Malachi: because it's such like a solo effort compared to what pro racing is. Say you get your pro license at Outlaw and you might not see anyone all day. So you're like super strong athlete, like well rounded obviously, but you might have come out the swim like five minutes back and then a pro race. good luck to you unless you will Draper, I guess. Harry: Hmm. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, ⁓ yeah, you just gotta be an absolute mentalist on the bike and run, haven't you, to kind of fight your way back in. Malachi: Yeah, literally. Yeah. But that's not my problem anymore, is it? Harry: Hmm. Yeah. Fun and games. Exactly. Exactly. You're not a bloody age group, mate. All right. Let's, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's, you and me both. Let's, ⁓ move on to the obviously social media side of things, right? So you're obviously racing as a professional, but most people listening to this will know you as Malachi: I'm not far off. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mmm. Malachi: It's Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I mean Harry: someone on social media who is absolutely smashing it at the minute and doing, well, would you say controversial or just like, just in videos that other people probably wouldn't have the balls to do, you know? Like, it's just stuff that's a bit weird. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Sometimes. Malachi: I'm not sure if it's... some of them are definitely controversial but I'd like to say outside of the box. I'm not like ruining anyone's day saying like... maybe I am. Yeah, because you're just like, oh wish I'd have bought that. Harry: Yeah, yeah, okay, let's go with that. Yeah. No, well, I mean, I don't know, it ruins my day every time I see you on social media, but... No, exactly. I'm like, fuck, why didn't I think of that? Talk us through your... imagine that at Bath Uni, we've got British women next to us and I turn up in a fucking aero helmet. ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Well, sometimes. Hehehehe. Hehehehe. Malachi: it's in the swimming pool. Hahaha Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Hahaha Malachi: well if you put a casque mistral on it's actually faster like surprisingly like actually surprisingly nice to swim in i'm gonna do a 400 all ltt in it because it's actually it's bits so yeah i did a tumble turn so it is a little bit floaty but i think it's fine if you do it in a 50 that's only like four tumble no i can't do maths but not many tumble turns Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha Harry: Really? How was- did you do any turns in it? Yeah. It's only a few turns. Seven, it's seven, yeah! ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Seven, seven, I think. Malachi: song, yeah, that'll maybe, that'll be out. Seven, okay. As I said, maps isn't my strong point. Harry: Someone get this man a calculator! Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mr. 400 grams of carbs. Malachi: Yeah, what? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: haha Malachi: Who builds a wonder and why I'm getting through so many gels. I've just been doubling the recommended intake. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: too. He's peppering himself up here for a good calculator sponsorship. What's the old school ones? Casio or something like that? Casio, that's the one. Hit them up. Hit them up for sponsorship, Malachi: Casio. Harry: ⁓ Casio, yeah, get on the game. Malachi: sponsor me so I can get my car of intake correct. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Harry: ⁓ man. So yeah, with the social media side of things, how do you feel like that works really well with being a professional athlete? Do you focus more on the social media side of things or do you see yourself as an athlete first, content creator second or vice versa? And yeah, like what are like the benefits and the challenges of that? Because surely I mean, it's crazy. The amount of ideas you have is actually wild. Like it's super, super impressive. Do you ever stress that you're just gonna run out of random ideas? Malachi: Thanks. Um, it's actually I'll start with that one first. It's actually not the ideas Running out that's the hard bit. It's getting permission to do them for example the helmets in the pool like I I didn't ask because I feel like it's like they're gonna say no aren't they but I've got like a list of maybe 60 ideas, but I'd say 50 of them you just need the right environment and the scenario to do it in because Harry: Yeah Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mm. Harry: Yeah. Yeah. Malachi: Yeah, no one's gonna let you do them and then getting people to film it as well is quite tricky. Like I do most of it myself just on my phone, know, edit it on my phone or sometimes my girlfriend helps, quite often she helps. So that's quite nice having her around. But yeah, it's not like I'm never worried I'm gonna run out of ideas. It's just how could I possibly film that by myself without getting kicked out or banned from the pool? Because I do need to go back and trade that every day of the week. Harry: Mm. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mm. Harry: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Malachi: Yeah, like walking back there this morning and the same lifeguard sat on the chair and I'm like, oh are they gonna say something? Like it's been Yeah, it's been like two days and like 350,000 people have watched that reel so I'm sure at least one person that goes to a swimming pool has surely seen that but Yeah, anyway, um athlete versus Harry: You're like, ⁓ god, what's he gonna say? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: not gonna do anything stupid today, I promise. Harry: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Surely, yeah. Malachi: influencer. I'd say last year I thought of myself as an athlete first and I wasn't really doing Instagram at all. It was kind of like something to keep me occupied on off-season and then I got a bit too carried away and I did too well and now I can't really stop because people are just expecting it. Like I feel like it would be a bit of a waste and I'm definitely like I was doing okay out of sponsorship before because I had like a bit of Harry: Mmm. Yeah. Yeah Yeah. Malachi: purple on my kit and a cool pink bike. ⁓ I don't know, I guess I was known in my local area. So I had a bit of help like paying for races and stuff. But now, yeah, it's, it's a, I'm like looking for a manager because it's getting a bit overwhelming. And I've, as you can tell from my math skills, I'm not really sure anything business. Like I'm, I don't know what I'm doing. yeah. Harry: Mmm. I'm sure. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Give me ten pounds, I'll do it. Harry: Yeah. You Malachi: No, literally, like, I'm taking like £50 to post and I've got people telling me like, no, you should be charging like 10 times that. Or like, like I did an advert for some toothpaste. They just sent me a box of toothpaste. That was, that was all I got. And I was like, yeah, yeah, free toothpaste. I walked into my mum in the living room and I was like, look, I got this for free. She was like, wow. Yeah. Harry: You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Way more, yeah. Harry: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Harry: ⁓ my god, you legend! Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Wow! Malachi: Yeah, she was like we're never gonna pay for toothpaste again. I was like yeah, we're sorting for life. Don't worry about it mom. got you Harry: Yeah, don't worry mum, it's my turn. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I'll teeth us a ridge Malachi: Yeah, yeah, I'll look after you when you're older. Don't worry. So yeah, I'd say now, I'd say I'm 40 % athlete, no, 60 % athlete, 40 % influencer. The only reason I'd say it's that way around is because if I've got my training to do and I've got a reel to make, I'll do the training first. And if the reel doesn't happen, all the posts. Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Good, yeah. Harry: Yeah. Malachi: Well, that'll get skipped, like it's not the end of the world. Like I get it in my head, like, oh, I need to post something every day thinking that people actually care, but no one's really going to notice. I don't think. so I'm, yeah, it's very- Harry: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: If you miss a day, 100%. Harry: Yeah, as long as you're pretty consistent with it, then it's fine, isn't it? Malachi: Yeah, so I do, like I say Monday, like at the end of the week and I've had like long ride, long run gym and I'm just completely dead. Like Monday, I just feel like I can't be bothered today. And that will get me back on it for the rest of the week. So it's definitely the experience. Harry: Hmm. Yeah. Yeah. I do think though, it's you're in like a exciting place though. It's like at the end of this year or towards the end of this year where, you know, like the sponsorship window is, you know, whether it's from like September to November time or whatever, like you, should be in a position where you can actually like get some decent deals from, you know, building up the social media. So it then makes it more of a, a viable. Malachi: Yeah. Harry: job doesn't it it's like it's not just thinking ⁓ i need to go to races and get prize money it's like the prize money is probably just like a little bonus whereas if you can sign like good deals with people because of your social media then it's like you're actually you're actually like a full-on professional athlete if that makes sense yeah Malachi: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: That's the actual income, yeah. Malachi: Well, professional athlete, I'd still say if you get... I don't think anyone's truly a professional athlete anymore. Because like say... What's his name? Blumenfeld wins Texas. What does he get for winning that? Like 50,000? Maybe not even that. But it's like his bonus... 28. But his race bonuses from the sponsors so far... Well, you probably know more than me. Harry: Something like that, Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Less I think, 2028 maybe. Yeah. Harry: Mm. Massive, yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: exceed that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, 100%. Malachi: There'll be way more than that. ⁓ So yeah, I'd say a professional athlete is getting all their money from race winnings. And I don't think anyone does that anymore. It's mostly coming from sponsorship. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: thing. What's been super interesting from, I guess, an outsider looking in at like what you've been doing compared to like, guess, like Harry and I kind of started racing pro ⁓ at a similar time in like 21. And I guess kind of the bunch of guys that we all started racing pro at the same time. I guess Harry is a slight outsider with his YouTube, but we kind of did it more like the conventional way of just like, yeah, training, racing. understanding that social media was like a growing thing but never really fully kind of capitalizing, I guess, on that. ⁓ So I think from an outsider looking in, it's been really interesting because as you said, last year you were potentially not thinking more social media, it was more like athlete-focused but I guess from my perspective of seeing you through social media, ⁓ Malachi: Thank you. Harry: Hmm. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It seemingly like you almost like reverse engineered a little bit of like, yeah, as you said, you might not be a professional athlete earning all your income through racing, but you've started to cultivate the ability to be a legitimate professional in terms of income. ⁓ You know, potentially before you get like your first big like race podium or whatever that is. Malachi: Yeah, think if we'd have been having the same, well, we wouldn't be having this conversation. last year because it would just be you and harry and harry would be the influencer in the conversation he's been doing it like i've watched i've probably watched 90 of his videos and and now i'm on a podcaster of harry interviewing me about influencing because i've done it for six months so maybe he should answer that question because i'd say i'd say that he's probably done quite well out of that kind of thing i don't i don't know if he wants to disclose Andrew Horsfall-Turner: True, true. Harry: You You No, no, no. Malachi: how the YouTube earnings work, but I bet you've made a fair chunk on some of the videos that have kept your race fund going. Harry: No comment. It was so funny the other day when Malachi was asking me and Finn about how to submit a tax return. I was like, mate, don't ask me, ask the accountant. Yeah, yeah. Malachi: He definitely has. It was funnier because then he asked me how much because like the YouTube balance was on the screen I was trying to work out how to get that money out and he was like ⁓ how much have you how much have you got is it like a lot and I was like yeah 120 pounds Andrew Horsfall-Turner: That's when you know you've started to make a bit of money. Malachi: I was like, yeah, really need disability. He was like, oh, don't worry about it. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I need to pay the tax on that. Harry: I was expecting you to say like, yeah, I got like 20 grand locked up in here. I need this money. You're like, yeah, 120 quid. Yeah, just fucking leave it. Malachi: What? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Mate, don't waste your effort, just leave it there. Malachi: Yeah, that's what we said. I was really proud of that. I was like, making the video I was already going to make. It's freaky. Harry: You They unbelievable. You're flying. Oh man. Also, I've got the most ridiculous story as well. This is not related to anything we're talking about, you know, do you remember when we were, we were all over at yours talking about Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Eheh Mm. Malachi: It's up to 160 though. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Nice. Nice. Malachi: I forgot what it was. Thank Harry: shaving before the race, you know, because Finn, like Finn shaves his arms, he shaves his chest, he shaves everything. I want to ask Andy, how much do you shave before a race? Like, do you just do your legs or is it everything? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Really? Malachi: Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Alright, I do my face. Well, normally I like a bit of stubble, so I like, I just trim my beard. That's the essential one. Gotta look good for the photos. And then, ⁓ legs. And then I've, but I also am really lazy. I use a beard trimmer to do my legs. I can't be arsed to wet shave. Malachi: Okay. Harry: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Malachi: Yeah, I use that as well. But then do you use the B-extremer? Harry: Okay. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: So your beard trim man, because if you're gonna wear like cut... Carry on. Malachi: You use the beard trimmer and then you know the foil shaver like you do on your face or you just go to like a zero. You don't finish it off. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I just go like the zero, so like if you like were to feel it, it would have a tiniest like prickle to it. But then I'm also like for most races I wear ⁓ like calf guards anyway. So like most of the leg is got a calf guard on. So and I have, I'm on and off about shaving my arms. I only shave my arms if it's a wetsuit swim because if it's a non wetsuit swim then shaved arms just feels wrong. Malachi: Okay, right. Harry: Yeah. Malachi: Yeah. Harry: Yeah. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Like swimming just feels like weird. Yeah. What about you guys? Harry: Okay. Malachi: I agree, does feel wrong. I actually- Harry: And you, so you just use the razor on your arm as well. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I just use, yeah, beard trimmer, beard trimmer everywhere. I leave a nice hairy chest though, because again, I think it looks good for the foes. Harry: Okay. Yeah Malachi: I don't know if it does. Harry: Malachi gone gone and Malachi. What about armpits? Do you guys shave your armpits as well? Malachi shaved his armpits the other day Andrew Horsfall-Turner: No, fuck that! Malachi: you That was not that was unrelated to the race so when I'm at home I've got like you know like a manscaping You know you've got the like the zero which is what you use on your beard And then you've got the clip on so you got like 0.5 to 1 to 2 usually I do my armpits and other areas so a 0.5 But but I left it I left it home, so I haven't got that here Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ man. Harry: You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, yeah. Harry: Yep. Yeah. Yeah Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Okay? Malachi: So all I've got is the zero. So I was just like, well, I'm at like a 13 length right now. So took it down to zero all over, everywhere. Obviously didn't help, it? But, same, same. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: haha Harry: You Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Man, I could just fit chafing everywhere. Malachi: Nah, it was okay because I did it like a few days in advance. But I was thinking if you crash your bike and like stuff's hanging out, at least it's gonna be aero. Harry: Yeah, that's true. So I cocked up the other day. I... So I was... This was literally like two days ago. I was in Tesco and I let my intrusive thoughts win. I saw some hair removal cream and I was like, oh, fuck it. don't want to... It is bad. I... Malachi: So you're laughing at me now, but... Thank ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ no. Harry: I was like, I don't want to try this for the first time before a race. So I was like, I'll try it tonight and I'll see if it works. so I didn't do my arms, but I did, I did my chest and I did my armpits and I didn't read, mate, I didn't read the instructions as well. I just did it. ⁓ and then I get in the shower and I'm like, ⁓ man, this is burning. This is so good. Malachi: Thank Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Aw man. Malachi: Thank Harry: Everything's gone and then I read the instruction it goes don't cover your nipples with anti like hair removal cream I was like fuck my nipples have been burning for like two days now I got like a rash under my armpit and I'm like Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ man. Malachi: You But Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Ha ha ha. Harry: I'm dating this girl at the minute and I had to say I said dating this girl at the minute that sounds that sounds bad but I'm dating this girl she's an absolute stunner the girl I'm dating at the moment that's what I should have said she um I had to say to her the other day I was like just so you're aware I've made a bit of a mistake and she just absolutely pissed herself at me so that's your funny story for the week Andrew Horsfall-Turner: The girl I'm dating at the moment. Malachi: Thank Andrew Horsfall-Turner: And you're also saying to her, please, please don't touch my nipples. Harry: I was like, please don't touch my nipples and please don't break up with me. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Malachi: Did you ever watch that, you know that in between his episode where he does the hair removal cream in the care home with that girl? Before I elaborate, did you know the one I'm talking about? And he's like, puts hair removal cream on his down there area, but then he doesn't wash it off. And the girl goes and puts her hand down there. And then she's like, she's like, why is all your hair falling out? Harry: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. you Mate, I'm so glad that I didn't put it down there because if it was feeling like my nipples are feeling, I would rather... Mate, I'm never using anti- like hair removal cream again. I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than ever use that again. Malachi: of birds. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah Malachi: You need to get a... You need to get a beard shaver. They are good. Yeah. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Beard trimmer, beard trimmer is the only way. Harry: Yeah, yeah, so anyway Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah. Malachi: And you don't cut yourself. You know when you shave up your shin and it just like digs in and like Jackers all the way up and then you just bleed in for like three hours You don't don't get that problem anymore Harry: Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Okay, I need to end my game. So I'm hoping the hair grows back. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Good shout, it is a shout. Malachi: Thank you. Thank Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Well, you don't want it to because you've got a race in like a week, haven't you? So just hope it doesn't grow back for like a week. Harry: No I do. Yeah. ⁓ man. But yeah, that took a weird turn. So for anyone listening, I apologise. But I hope you enjoyed that story. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I'm going to do ⁓ the job of bringing it back to summarise this episode a little bit. ⁓ I know right? I have to be the sensible one. Right lads, we've been going for almost 50 minutes now so what is next? I know Harry is racing the Challenge Champs. Malachy, what's up next for you? Malachi: sure they loved it. Harry: Yeah. Malachi: Boring. Harry: Challenge champs! Malachi: Yeah, one. Yeah, I'm just gonna follow Harry around all year until I beat him at something. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: challenge jumps, rematch and then. So I'm guessing you'll be at, I'm guessing it's challenge champs then like 70.3 Swansea for both of you as well. Harry: Yeah, probably. Malachi: Yeah, yeah, I think I'm gonna race an outlaw before that Just to show my face I'm doing like a gravel triathlon on Saturday Then also on Saturday a 10k and then a 70.3 or they call it half distance on Sunday And they said if I win all three, they'll refund my family's entries to the other events That's my goal Yeah, there's also course record running Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Nice. Okay. Harry: What pressure! I'm sweet as! Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Nice. No pressure yet. Yeah, good shout, yeah. Malachi: that yeah James Teagle's got it from the PTO race that was there a few years ago so it's like it's 1500 split between if the woman gets it as well so hopefully no fast women turn up and I'll get 1500 pound yeah I hope so yeah not bad Harry: How much you got? Okay. fingers crossed. Yeah that's not bad. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Happy days. Harry: Sweet as, mate, that sounds good. Nice. Malachi: But yeah, then Swansea. Are you doing that as well, Andy? Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Yeah, yeah, I'm gonna be, I'm gonna race challenge, good thanks, and then yeah Swansea, so a couple of middle distances coming up. Harry: Yeah, British champs at Swansea. Gonna be good. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: It's gonna be what it always is. It always is. Malachi: Yeah, I'm gonna not come last this time. Harry: Yeah, and then and then I think all three of us are gonna do 10b as well Andrew Horsfall-Turner: ⁓ Malachi: ⁓ that- I was not saying anything about that yet. Because I didn't want to commit. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: We got. Cannot confirm or deny. Harry: Come on, come on, come on. Malachi: Yeah, I'm thinking about it, but I've never done a fall before, so I'm a bit nervous to do that as my first go. Harry: I think Yeah Easy. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: I was in Tempe this morning having a coffee, so yeah, I recommend the coffee there. Harry: Just not the Iron Man. ⁓ What useless information. Andy said the coffee's good so I'm gonna do an Iron Man. ⁓ Andrew Horsfall-Turner: The course though, fucking that was hard. Malachi: ⁓ I'll do it then. you Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You Malachi: Like someone asked me why are you doing STEMB? ⁓ it's got really good coffee. Never mind the triathlon. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: You I'm not even gonna tell you which coffee shop to go to, you just have to find the right coffee shop. Malachi: hahaha Harry: You're gonna go to a coffee shop be like this is shit, and I'm still gonna do an Iron Man Malachi: Yeah. Harry: Cheers for that mate, TripAdvisorAndy over here. Andrew Horsfall-Turner: Alright, yeah you're welcome guys. Cheers. Right, cheers lads. I will end it there and yeah, big thanks Malachi for popping in and ⁓ yeah, any tourism advice you need, slide into my DMs. Harry: Thank Malachi: It's alright, enjoyed it. Harry: yeah cheers boys appreciate that Andrew Horsfall-Turner: See you later. Malachi: Bye.
