Jason: Welcome collectors to another episode of Boomin' Sports Cards, the podcast where the hobby stays hot and the cards stays boomin'. I'm one of your hosts, Jason.

chat: And I'm my like so we're talking about the biggest drivers in the hobby, FOMO. Whether it's a new product release, a breakout rookie, or latest hobby trend, fear of missing out impacts almost every collector at some point.

Jason: we'll discuss how FOMO affects buying decisions, the good and bad side of it, and some ways collectors can avoid it. So what is FOMO? FOMO is the fear of missing out. yeah, so impacts investors, breakers, dealers. It's a big driving force in the card collecting industry. And maybe hidden and maybe a psychological factor in sports cards, but it's very apparent in any part you see of sports cards.

chat: Yeah, it's ⁓ everywhere you see it. New products, new ⁓ recently ⁓ Jen Brunson winning the finals MVP. you saw how much of his cards sold the day of one the his his base cards sold for like two hundred dollars. And yeah, that's crazy. ⁓ 'cause people are like th people don't really believe ⁓ intern if they're not like that. I think he's talented. Most people didn't really think he's talented, but everybody thought the Spurs are gonna win, but yeah.

Jason: Yeah, FOMO c yeah, it can be players, like like we said, it it can be like new releases if there's like a new NBA product, new NFL product, is like I need that now. I need to go to the store right now 'cause people are pulling these massive cards and I got the chance to pull this massive card. So people are afraid of missing out and the one in one thousand chance getting a good card. so let's start with our first thing, ⁓ first FOMO. Point. So it's product releases. Like we mentioned, ⁓ Topps NBA, that was a big FOMO for a lot of people when it first came out. Cause it was like, ⁓ it's teased for the last couple of months. It's the first product where Topps has the rights back of the NBA. So we were buying that product like crazy.

chat: Yeah, and then people were selling the product, we're selling we're selling it for so much. A hanger was going for 70 bucks. I it's still going for 70 bucks. I think it would be more now if you look on.

Jason: Yeah, so so why it happens. So like fear of missing that massive poll, like we said, people wanna get that next, like I don't know, LeBron James, so the the next Drake May and the fear like the prices may go up even more and and or or some for like some singles not being affordable at that time. So like it it's a there's a lot of factors behind like product releases where people wanna open the products. And not miss out.

chat: One of the biggest things just came out this week is the top series two hobby boxes, ⁓ just like the whole site just came out. looking online, everything's expensive. So I won't for personally I won't buy anything online for a little bit because everything's gonna be expensive and I'm gonna have to wait till maybe th maybe next month 'cause everything's expensive. Somebody's gonna buy those cards regardless because they feel that They have a better chance of buying the car instead of buying it from a hobby box or getting from a hobby box. So yeah, people people are scared of missing out right now.

Jason: Yeah, and the reality, Chuck, is that like many of these wax products go down a lot within like the next couple of weeks when after the release. Up to like twenty to fifty percent off after release. Like Murakami's cards were going insane when he was finally in what in Bowman?

chat: Yeah. Stuin insane. Like one of his ⁓ you know the red rookie ones with the red ⁓ rookie sign? That that was at like two hundred dollars, now it's like sixty bucks. Now it's maybe a month. So if you want a card and it you know it's like two hundred bucks, not just wait maybe a week, month, it's gonna go half price. So

Jason: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, definitely. Like like yeah, like Chrome also is like a big factor. Like NFL Chrome, they're that was going for so much 'cause like the boxes were so much. And now you can get a base for like two, three bucks. You can get a nice looking car for like another twenty. So when they were usually like a hundred bucks, a hundred, four hundred dollars on the day of the release. So yeah, release product release in FOMO is very true. ⁓ let's mi probably a big reason why ⁓ wouldn't and streams like that are a big thing 'cause people can access those products and but they want the real the hits, you know.

chat: Yeah. All week I've been seeing like hobby boxes of the two new top series two. TikTok freaking people are selling hobby packs for like over a hundred bucks and I'm like I I could I could just wait or just go to the store and go get a pack real right now. I'm not willing to pay these prices just f just to get a chance of getting something good.

Jason: Mm-hmm. Yeah, like one spot it can be ⁓ just a hul a hobby box or it c it can be the price of a of a box. it's insane. so Alex, so how often is buying on release date actually the best move in your opinion?

chat: ⁓ I don't think it's good at all in my opinion. I think it's a good for me. save you for me, I had bought a bunch of Jacob ⁓ Ms. cards, but not from his top series collection, from the Heritage collection. ⁓ after his recent ⁓ fifteen K strikeout the other day, his card shot up, especially his top series two. people are more on certain products. So no one's really when the series two dropped, everybody was focused on series two, series one, trying to get more of his cards. And I I the best part was that for me was like nobody was paying attention to the heritage cards, which ⁓ easy to get because the were decent enough to get. So I think it's like one of the best things about release days that people lose focus on certain products and they just focus on the like the big ones that just move on that just come along.

Jason: Yeah, I would stay away from release days. ⁓ definitely wait a couple of months, a couple of weeks and they're bound to go down. Like I got a bunch of Cooper flags and that are already like a month out and their prices are like probably like more than half what they were on release day. so now let's move on to the player hype FOMO. So like y like Alex said, like Jalen Brunson a a big example that happened

chat: Yeah.

Jason: Like the last couple last week where he won a championship. Everyone runs to eBay. It wants that base card, that Prism card. And that player's card just explodes. That whole Mario just explodes. sometimes even influencers play a play a big factor in that. If someone says, ⁓ this guy's gonna be the next Bobby Witt, ⁓ this guy's gonna be the next Shohi Otani, and then that causes a player to go up. Yeah, so it's a it's a constant trend in the sports market. An NFL rookie has a huge preseason, people want his card. NBA player goes on a playoff run, they want his card. Prospect gets called up. So it's a constant like rotating ⁓ after player where people want are FOMO about it. Like, I need that card. who's one player that you you had that FOMO experience with?

chat: it's Merikami. when the real estate popped out, I really wanted his ⁓ the pack ones. But they're g they're too expensive and seventy five dollars for a like a silver pack isn't even like a different color, a different number. And especially somebody they ⁓ was selling his base card for fourteen dollars. Like that's crazy. Bro I know bro's good, but like he hasn't won ⁓ V P rookie of the year. Let's chill People are just trying to Get that FOMO off, but that's one of the big fumbles for me right now.

Jason: Yeah. I would say one of mine is probably like Roman Anthony, 'cause he was like the big name and he was doing good in the world baseball classic. We heard like the myth where like he can launch a ball, that he's gonna be the next feature of the of the league. so like I was really hyped about his cards. I had I bought some on the day of release, unfortunately. but b ⁓ opened a lot of packs 'cause I wanted his cards. So I was hyped around him. But yeah, it's kind of a mistake and not really I didn't pay like I didn't buy like one of his high end cards. Obviously they're not probably worth what they were at that time when I bought it. so it's yeah, it's it's it's interesting how player FOMO happens.

chat: Yeah, like and then when things happen, like you freaking he got hurt w throughout the season and all his cars just dropped. So Kinda suck.

Jason: Yeah. So what's the next one, Alex? What what's what what other FOMO was are there?

chat: the next thing we got is trend FOMO. Collectors off the chase, whatever the hobby's obsessed with. At the moment, sometimes cards matter less at than the trend. so something pops off like a couple weeks before the NBA finals, people were buying Victor WBM. I did the mistake of buying Victor ⁓ a base card for like fifty nine dollars. Now it's like a it's a little more s of the price, but that's one of the big twenty two year old going to the finals for the first time. And in it was his first playoff on two. That's one of the big trends the time.

Jason: Yeah, and then there's also like people who like hype up a specific card in a set and then next thing you know it they're called short super short prints or short prints, but they're really just cool looking cards and people hype these cards up. obviously there's so like a hype around downtowns and kaboom since now like Panini's gone out of that that licensing agreement. ⁓ but yeah, there's there's a lot of trends that happen like pretty much every month.

chat: Just regular.

Jason: And people are like, ⁓ this is a cool card and then they start promoting on their social media or we see it more in shows. So there's always trends and people want to follow those trends because they think that's what's hot and that's where they put their money into. ⁓ let's see. Do you think these cards are popular because everyone says they're popular or do you actually think they're like just cool looking cards? I don't know.

chat: downtown's yeah, I I wan well, ⁓ you're only person that's ever gotten a downtown, by the way. it's up you. Like for you, how how did you feel about getting a downtown besides like it being Matthew Golden?

Jason: I was psyched 'cause I was like, that's my biggest hit I've ever done at that time. And now I was like, Holy shit, I don't care about the player. I f I've got this really cool card. It's shiny. Obviously I feel like Kaloons are kinda cooler. Because like it's more colorful than that. But like downtown at that moment I was like, Holy shit. I'm I've never pulled this and although I'm I'm not a Packers fan, this is pretty cool.

chat: Car's still the same price, by the way. We even we we checked. kabooms. I've did I've pulled a kaboom, but it was the Jaden Daniels ⁓ kaboom. ⁓ it's my dad's he traded it like a while ago. He got it, he traded for a Caleb Kaboom. good trade, by the way. pulling it ⁓ because the we it is my dad bought like a case. of ⁓ twenty boxes from Hobby ⁓ not Hobby Lobby, ⁓ freaking Ace Hardware. So we went through all those boxes. We did get like a bunch of variation inserts like ⁓ explosion, another ca another version of Kaboom. So yeah, it is cool to pull them for a bit, but kabooms for me I feel like it's like it's a one time feeling. Like alright, cool, I got this and I think I don't I don't I don't find like with findings like a big thing anymore for me.

Jason: Yeah, I mean I feel like like I feel like it's the younger kids or in like the younger people who like wanna chase these cards who think they have that that ⁓ that luck of like one in whatever thousand packs they're in. but yeah, I feel like it's a trend people want to get kabooms, wanna get downtowns, mangas. They're dope cards, but like some of them just they just follow it, follow other people's lead. So what are the repercussions of FOMO? So obviously we're we're overpaying. ⁓ I I feel like we both have overpaid in some cards and we're like their values is nowhere near what we bought for.

chat: Orphan, yeah. Yes, especially buying those ⁓ Roman Anthony Rainbow and like hollows. I looked at the price the other day, they're not the same price anymore. And they kinda Yes. ⁓ you they are really bad and you will cry a little bit and you're like great.

Jason: Yeah. I do not want to look at those prices. They are really bad. Yeah. 'Cause they're each were like going like twenty bucks and now I I don't want to snow how much. Please don't tell me. ⁓ but ⁓ buying outside your collection goals that can be out of FOMO. You can just buy just random sports or like yeah, or like buy a player you don't like but you like the art or something.

chat: No.

Jason: impulse purchasing. I've done this once or twice where it's like, ⁓ shit, this is at the store. Let me buy it two pack two boxes and yeah, ⁓ get jack shit. wax edition addiction, just keep buying more wax because you want to get that big hit. chasing losses. just wanting to buy more. So yeah, locking a lot of things can happen from FOMO. So, Alex, how do we fight FOMO?

chat: creating a plan, know where you collect before entering a show or opening an app. ⁓ me, I'm gonna wait on Jane Brunson cards. I'm not gonna buy them right now. might wait till like beginning of what do you call it the season. Same thing with Victor Rambiyama. Just gotta wait for those drop prices that drop.

Jason: Yeah, that's that's how I felt Drake May. The hype was so big around him. I was like, I'll just buy in the off season. I know I if he won the serial, that would that would have been impossible. But right now his prices are pretty pretty legit and not overpaying like it was like during the regular season.

chat: the second step is the the f the setup budget, avoid emotional purchases. How do you how do you do that, Jason? ⁓

Jason: That's a hard qu that's a hard that's a hard one. ⁓ that's very hard. Yeah, I mean just staying within your means. I mean, don't get loaned, don't be buying on credit cards or like yeah, just just go with a budget. When you go to a cart show, stay within a budget. Don't go to the ATM, even though they're there. yeah, buy within the money you have and you'll be good.

chat: Yeah. ⁓ wait twenty four hours and see if you want it tomorrow. Consider buying it. That is true. Wait. Yeah, sleep on it. If you dream about it, buy it. Like you don't just think about it first. Cause if a card if it's not like a significant card and it's like a base or like something that's not really valuable and it's a high overprice because it just recently came out, don't buy it. Just wait a week, maybe a month. It's gonna be there. There's another version of that same card somewhere else. Just wait for it.

Jason: Sleep on it. Uh-huh. Yeah, what I've been doing is like ⁓ on eBay I just saved that card's listed and then whenever it drops to that price zone that I wanna buy it, I buy eventually it's gonna go cheaper, eventually it's gonna get to that price zone that I want.

chat: You'll get that notification saying this card dropped by ten percent, twenty five percent, fifty percent.

Jason: Yeah. Facts. Or like, ⁓ you got you got you got new cards that were listed under this name and under this title. So yeah.

chat: ⁓ remember there's always another card. Very few cards are truly once in a lifetime opportunities. Back to the Saint There's always gonna be the same card somewhere else. Don't feel like ⁓ if that card disappears, you're not gonna find it. You're gonna find it again. It's gonna take a minute or it's gonna be somewhere else. You just gotta wait for it. I think ⁓ you'll be grateful or ⁓ happier when you have that chance to buy the card and something at a lower price. And you're like, Okay, cool, I didn't spend a hundred dollars, spent like twenty five bucks on this card. Cool.

Jason: Yeah, definitely just wait it out. I mean, there's so many prints you find it like the least where you least expect it. Like Tom Brady cards you think they're gonna be rare. You can only have that one time and buy it. Next thing you know you go to a sh show in a couple of months and it's right there. So yeah, just wait it out.

chat: Wait it out. buy what you like now what social media tells you to like like ⁓ so whatever you see online, if somebody tells you this isn't like the big next next player or buy this player now, just think about before you do it because sometimes guys are trying to push their own cards out, they'd be bought. So So like if say if they have Roman Anthony Jacob or ⁓ Mur Murakami card they're trying to sell and they make a video saying this, this and this and this guy, this guy's the next big thing, the next show hey, the next MVP the the the let's to be honest, they're probably trying to sell a car they have on

Jason: Facts. No, you can go on my whatnot now and I have all these cards. Yeah, d don't don't fall for that. Buy what you like, stick what you like, you know. Don't listen to other people. Don't let people dictate your collection. And you'll be you'll be having lots of fun if you don't do that.

chat: By you like. Buy more freak me cards. Come on. Or not.

Jason: Yeah, or don't. I want all the Drake Money cards. all right. So yeah, that's what FOMO is, how we fight it, all the different ways that FOMO affects different parts of the card market. so now let's move on to Collector's Corner. So Alex, it's been a while. ⁓ So are what cards are you looking for right now? What's on the radar of Alex?

chat: So the thing I've been telling you like the other day I should show you my ex spreadsheet for what cards they get. So ⁓ I'm gonna be the X Fractor guy. I'm just gonna be collect the be the the guy who collects X Fractors of each player right now. maybe the I wanna be that guy who has a big collection of it. I wanna be that the not unique but that niche guy, but right now I'm working my way through ⁓ rookie of the year ⁓ players who in the past ⁓ looking for their X Fractors, see how much costs. Cy Young Award, winners, MVPs, any anybody that has a title in baseball right now. I'm trying to see if you can get the rookie card for a certain price. ⁓ not to lie, a lot of rookie of the year guys are gone. Like Lewis Gill, he no longer plays in baseball. He's in the he w they got sent back to the Triple A's, ⁓ minors, ⁓ and some other guy, I forgot his name. He got a guy rookie of the year twenty twenty three. towards ACL and no longer plays and his cards are super cheap now. Which is kinda nice. Because I received like a twelve dollar PSA ten of h his X Rector and I was like, that's not bad at all. Just add it to the collection. I don't have to grade this ever.

Jason: W. Yeah. That's awesome. Yeah, it's gonna look nice when you get of all those. separating them by teams, right? Or like how are you doing it?

chat: So ⁓ I go ⁓ through the MLB website and like look up ⁓ t last ten year last ten years of whoever won the NLAL rookie of the year and I I ⁓ the ten players, put ⁓ on the spreadsheet and look at ⁓ PSA ⁓ raw, PSA eight, nine, ten, and then look at the like are like all right, cool. And so when you see which one is cheaper, would I rather buy this raw or rather buy this like a nine or ten and see what's cheaper because I front a Randy ⁓ What is his last name? Starts with A. Randy something. There we go. His p his X Fractor is th three dollars or like ten or like ten bucks and his PSA ten is thirty bucks. I might as well buy the PSA ten.

Jason: Rosarina? Might as well, yeah. Yeah, he's not a big player. He's a cool player, I like him though.

chat: Yeah, might as well sign. That's what I'm doing right now. He's a cool player. Yeah ⁓ And then versus like ⁓ what's his name? Jordan Alvarez. His P his ⁓ raw card is thirty bucks and his PSA ten is one twenty. So I'm doing like the math on everything. Like if I ever do want to get these cards graded, like which one then seems like a better option? Like getting a nine doesn't seem that bad right now.

Jason: Yeah. That's legit. ⁓ anything else? Any other players?

chat: Not really, just I'm not really look I was gonna buy more for Jalen Brunson cards, but everything's expensive. But the what did I ⁓ yeah, Jake Marzarovsky cards. I'm buying him because he's killing it this week. Or last week. finally got my Murakami card from freaking that little now stuff that people finally sent me it. That took forever and then I'm getting my rookie of the year ⁓ Cooper Flag week too.

chat: What about you, Jason? What what have you been up to?

Jason: not much to be honest. I'm just collecting more World Cup stickers. That's all I've been ⁓ been focused on. Yeah, not not much. I mean, yeah, just looking at I was I was buying a lot of bunch of of Wembees. not all obviously not the overpriced ones, but like more budget friendly ones. but yeah, right now nothing nothing too crazy. Just anything that catches my eye, to be honest. When I go to ⁓

chat: Well ⁓ maybe

Jason: local card shop if I see a cool like rookie card of like a like the other day I bought an Adrian Peterson card and I like, ⁓ this is pretty cool. ⁓ it's not worth much, but like it's a dub card. ⁓ yeah, it was a rookie card. I can't I can't tell you. It's somewhere in there. like I bought a random Antonio Brown Dragon Scale

chat: Yeah. ⁓ Is it a rookie card or What's the what's the brand?

Jason: When he was on the bucks, I was like super random. I was fuck it. Tony Brown, I like him. Yeah, it was like ten bucks. I was like, this is pr it was numbered out of eighty nine, so I was like, that's a pretty cool card. So I've just been buying a bunch of random stuff. I have no players that I really want to buy. Maybe like Cam Moard is one of the guys, maybe get his X Factor eventually, 'cause I got Artie Jackson Dards. So yeah. Nothing crazy.

chat: What is like ten dollars? It's not bad. Say football right now. Football X Factors are expensive right now 'cause they just came out and they're licensed and might I don't really like this draft class here. I just hope the next draft class looks much better, but I gotta work on getting the rest of the Caleb X Factors. Yellow, regul the regular one and the the pink one. That to continue the X Factor ⁓ collection for him.

Jason: Yeah, that'd be dope. Yeah, I got old Drake Mays. So I need to get his like rookie season couple of them. some of his like tops finest that came out. So to get some of those. so now what are some experiences that have happened throughout the like last two weeks?

chat: ⁓ so I've been selling more on ⁓ eBay. I sold a couple cards this week. Man, you USPS sucks, I'm not gonna lie. And one of the big things this week was like they grab like I put the card in the mailbox, they grab it and then it takes forever to get an update like when it's been scanned. And the last week I sent out a Bonex PSA eight rookie card. I don't really like him as much. But it's still Bonex and somebody bought it like Seventeen bucks and it's going for twenty. a UPS. I had the request like the fine it, they found it. The guy gave me if they got delivered today, guy gave me my money back. That yeah, that's an experience. Selling on eBay has his moments where it's super hard, so

Jason: Yeah, th that's what I've been avoiding. I don't wanna sell a bunch of bums or like autographs where I can get like a couple of bucks out of it. But I'm like, do I really wanna deal with that headache of people and mail and shit? So I've been waiting on that.

chat: It's like a like a side gig, but sometimes it has this moments where like things fail and you're like, Great, I'm ⁓ I'm gonna have to figure out how to help ⁓ like the other day ⁓ I sent out a Will Smith ⁓ patch and it that UPS ⁓ ⁓ screwed me on it because they bent it and the guy had wanted his money back. So I gave it the money back and I thought he was never gonna send it. He he sent me back and it's like, Bro, you really mad for a five dollar card and it has like a little ⁓ mark on it? It's whatever. But

Jason: Yeah, you told me that.

chat: I got the card back, I gave it to my dad 'cause he likes patches and I was you know what, screw it. It's only five bucks. I'll dispute this with UPS one eventually. Or USPS. But yeah, that's the experiences. we we're gonna have next episodes we're gonna have us talking about the Nationals. Nationals are coming up them soon, Jason.

Jason: Yeah, no, no. Yeah, so no won't be able to make it. Gonna go to Minnesota for SummerSlam. Had that planned and then they're like, ⁓ shit, it's that weekend. I was like, Fuck. So that fucked up. ⁓ Yeah, I mean I guess I don't go out of the state that much and it's gets me away from Illinois for a bit. ⁓

chat: think that's a better experience in my opinion. Well Well yeah, that's true. And I'll just scout out some cards for Jason. If Jason wants some cards, he'll let me know.

Jason: Yeah, I'll let you know. But yeah, my experiences ⁓ open series it's it's series two or is it updated? I can't what's the thing? Yeah, series two got a bunch of shitty cards, got a Murakami base card, was happy because of that. Got some random pitchers auto. So ⁓ shitty experience. Yeah, shitty experience with that. I scammed a local card shop. Not really. It was their fault.

chat: Series two. It's ⁓ twenty twenty two. Bro had a terrible stance. Don't say it like that.

Jason: It was their fault. I mean, I just found a good price and I bought it. ⁓ it was a Drake May PSA 10 card. It was 50 bucks. I saw PSA 10. I saw Drake May and I was like, ⁓ shit, what is that? 50 bucks? I quick I like briefly ⁓ Googled it and I was like, I'm just gonna look for this up. I'm like, I don't think any Drake May cards are fifty bucks in a PSA 10.

chat: Jason is a

Jason: ⁓ so I was like, I'm just gonna buy it and I'll look in the car if if it's actually a good deal or not. And next thing you know it, the card was like two eighty, two fifty. And I was like, fuck yeah, I got that deal.

chat: It would've been ballsy move if you would have asked for forty five dollars. I was thinking like like can I get this for forty five instead of fifty? And the guy checks and he's like, ⁓ this is supposed to be two eighty That's one of the moments you're like, I'm gonna just take just take it. Like here's fifty bucks, give me my card. And try to like have a ballsy move like two

Jason: Yeah, right. I'll be so devastated. Get my fucking card, run away. Yeah, yeah, I got this store f r really fast 'cause I was like, this dude's gonna find out eventually. This card is not worth fifty bucks.

chat: Jason picture's gonna be on the store. Like never buy never sell the cards to this guy.

Jason: Yeah, facts. ⁓ but yeah, that's my experience. Nothing crazy. still collecting stickers. Hit me up if you've you have World Cup stickers. Needs lots of trades. I am I'm eighty four percent done.
