Kailey Waskall: Beauty was never designed with disabled people in mind, but we're here anyways. Ashton McGrady: I'm Ashton, disabled beauty creator. Kailey Waskall: and I'm Kaylee, an occupational therapist. Ashton McGrady: And this is Accessibly Ever After, where we talk all things accessible beauty, inclusive design, and what it really means to make beauty work for real people. Kailey Waskall: Every week we start with our crown and curse of the week, also known as something good that happened to us this week and something bad that happened to us this week. Ashton, I'm gonna throw it to you and I'm gonna say I'm gonna start with your curse because I think we need to expel the negative energy. Ashton McGrady: fine. I was gonna just like switch it up on you and throw it right back to you because I feel like I always get thrown to first No, it's fine I feel like it's and I like maybe it's something our listeners need hear think sometimes also we think that Other people don't deal with these same things like these feelings because we don't talk about them a lot Kailey Waskall: Okay, I can do that. Ashton McGrady: I, really got caught in game of comparison. ⁓ know as a creator that so common, it's really hard not to feel competitive in this space. watching people our niche, outside of our niche, receiving all these brand deals or like... You know, they're receiving a lot of engagement from folks or following is growing so quickly or all these things. And it's really easy to fall into those pits of not me? What am I not doing enough? And am not immune to that either. been creating now for like seven years. And I feel like for a while I felt very firm in my position and I felt very comfortable almost. then this week that kind of just came crumbling under me ⁓ I felt very, very vulnerable ⁓ kind caught stuck in this cycle I don't if can relate. Kailey Waskall: ⁓ yes. My entire social media career has been basically one big therapeutic event I always wanted be an influencer, I've always wanted to share content online, grow community. Ashton McGrady: Maddie knew who she was from young age. Kailey Waskall: I literally have always wanted it and I was really embarrassed by it for the longest time. Like I locked that stuff away in a box. I was like, nope, this is This silly. Obviously it's not. That was me hating on myself. And ⁓ then I an OT, was ⁓ I have to be really professional. They like hammer that into your head that like your patients are gonna look you up and you have to be professional and blah, blah, blah, blah, old school. And then I was so afraid to like show as someone who has a lot of knowledge because I was like, no, like I ⁓ can't, I don't know anything. And mean, truth, like you're always learning right? But I do have a lot of expertise that I can share Ashton McGrady: Great. Kailey Waskall: I've kind of gone up and down and you've been here through a lot of it at this point. Ashton McGrady: It's just a regular Tuesday. Kailey Waskall: but how I really want to show up online. And I think a lot of that is linked watching other blow up and wanting to find that like magic sauce, right? being like, there's one specific thing that I'm out on, That I'm obviously doing I think some of that too comes ⁓ from Ashton McGrady: Great. Kailey Waskall: fear of scarcity, this isn't my full time job, but I do want it to be my full time job, eventually. and I really have had to work through therapy through just a lot of self reflection ⁓ on still worthwhile. And it's still something I really want to do, even if it's not like monetarily always fruitful. I I was focused so much on survival that I stopped focusing on all the positives of the community that I already have and love. And like, any time I get a comment or I'm able to connect with people, it like truly fills my cup in a way that other careers haven't. And so I think really focusing on all the other pieces, Like all the other stuff that is just so good and juicy and feels fabulous and is why, juicy, ⁓ and why I started doing this has really helped me like shape ⁓ who am a creator and understand how I'm positioning myself and how I'm showing up. And I think once I started reframing scarcity mindset, I really to feel Confident and comfortable in like coming online and being like I'm so excited to be here and to share with you guys this stuff Ashton McGrady: I love that. And also welcome to therapy hour, everyone. No, I mean, again, I feel like this is a conversation that everyone needs to hear this doesn't even just apply to creators, though I do think If you work in a creative field, feel like that definitely is amplified. ⁓ it is a lot of you're saying. It a lot of scarcity mindset, especially Kailey Waskall: Yeah, sorry guys. Mm-hmm. Ashton McGrady: If you fall into any minority category we're seeing a lot less of emphasis across marketing regarding diversity, equity, Is it surprising because of where we are in our political landscape? No. think that has really felt amplified for a while I know I'm not alone in feeling it. Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. Ashton McGrady: ⁓ really hard. allowed to feel the feelings. ⁓ I allowed myself like sit in that sit in the discomfort figure out what do I have over in this situation what can I do to basically get myself back on the right path. I think that's a lesson in boundaries. think, you know, Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm, as you should. Ashton McGrady: People are making you feel uncomfortable online if you find yourself comparing to a person over and over and over again, mute them, block them. It ⁓ sometimes have to do that for your own mental health. I think very healthy, but the same thing applies in real life. If there are people in your life that don't make you feel good, maybe it's time to off communication for a while and that's okay. You are allowed to do that. Boundaries are healthy and one day you can unblock them or talk to them again. But sometimes we just to do that Kailey Waskall: I something that has really helped me also on kind of the same train of thought of the internet and like how you connect with others and you social media, right? I think we always frame it as you can mute and block people and it feels like, you're muting or blocking a friend, but have started viewing the social media landscape as like, a public place, So if I'm just like in ⁓ a mall food court, The chicken. That was so good. ⁓ I mean, I'm vegetarian now, so will not eat it, but it was good in high school. but if you think about it as like Ashton McGrady: Yeah. me some bourbon chicken, please. ⁓ It slabs. Real. Kailey Waskall: mall food court, some people that you connect with and you chat with and like, it's really fun and it's good. And I like thing of those people as like your followers, Or your community. It's the people who come in and you're like, ⁓ yeah, I like connecting with you. This has been such a fun conversation about like our favorite store. And then you go on your own merry way because you don't live together, it's fun. And then there's other people where you just see them and you're like, don't vibe with your energy. And that's... perfectly fine because there's other people who don't vibe with my energy I'm sure much as that pains to say and this is recovering people pleaser I think in a place like a mall you wouldn't have to actively be like ⁓ don't want to see that person anymore you would just turn around or move away and so online if you think of the muting and blocking or unfollowing as you just being like you know what I don't need you in my orbit Ashton McGrady: That's so valid. Right. Kailey Waskall: doesn't feel as intense because it truly shouldn't like it's creating this whole new era of surveillance and of constantly being on and of constantly seen And so I think if we almost put social media into real life, like real pieces. ⁓ Ashton McGrady: into the mall food court. Kailey Waskall: social media is a mall food court and you decide who you want to chat with and have those little conversations in line with people or whatever. And then you also get to decide who you're just like, know what? I don't need to interact with you and there's no reason for me to. So I'm going to go the other way. ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Yeah, sometimes okay to remove access to yourself other people if that doesn't feel good for you. ⁓ And fully, believe my list runs heavy ⁓ after, again, having done this seven years. But I feel a lot better. Yesterday really was able to like that to someone like semi-involved in situation and just like talking it through with said person made me a lot better. I was able to really like sit down and think about what I was feeling and like put that into words. just I think getting that out on, I'm not gonna say because I was typing. getting that out into the air really did with my energy some and it's going to make the rest of the week and the weekend lot better. But yeah, I think we all feel this sometimes and don't think we talk about it a lot, Because we're like scared of being vulnerable because ultimately it's like this inferiority that we're feeling and that feels very vulnerable to like express and share with other people. I ⁓ a lot better now my carried me Do you want to your curse or crown first? Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. I'll keep on the curse. it's kind of, it's, basically started Wellbutrin, we're trying non-stimulant for ADHD first ⁓ and we decided on Wellbutrin my psychiatrist and I had a discussion. She was like, think for X, Y, and Z reasons. And I said, I trust you and I like Ashton McGrady: Okay, Get into it. You Kailey Waskall: And yesterday was so wrong. Ashton McGrady: You were going through Kailey Waskall: was I really speed ran entirety of all the side effects. For those of you don't know, my current day job is at a public school and we had like an 8 a.m. meeting. So I showed up and I was like, oh. I'm jittery. I'm like borderline manic and I have to like professional in this meeting right now and like talk about IEPs and stuff. And so I was like, this is gonna be fine lock in. And I did and it was great. And I was like, ⁓ I'm starting to feel sad and tired. so I like saw all my kids, which was great. And then have to go into work later today for a meeting. So they told me I could leave a few hours early if I could like make it work basically. So moved on. ⁓ honestly, universe was looking out because I drove home and fell asleep for like an hour. then I woke up and I was like, okay, what is the vibe now? Ashton McGrady: Maybe that was best case scenario. Kailey Waskall: and the vibe now was really sad and like, not full tears. I have a really hard time starting crying. Like it takes a lot for me to start to cry when I'm just like feeling things. If I'm watching someone else, like I'm very much like a social crier, parallel play crier, if will, if someone else is crying, I'm like, you. ⁓ I'm just so empathetic. Ashton McGrady: I gotta join in. Kailey Waskall: I was just like having like tears now and then husband because he sometimes has to stay late at work I was like, hey, like, do you know what time you're coming home? And he was like, hoping soon. I just gave it a thumbs up and I was like, I don't even know what that means. And he goes, are you OK? And I was like, honestly, no, I really need you. my best moment. But he obviously cued into that and like, huh? And so then he came and I gave him a hug and I just cuddled for a little and I was like, wow, this was really healing. The power of co-regulation, baby. And then I had dinner and I started to feel less sad, but then I started to feel nauseous and I was like, what is happening today? ⁓ Yeah, I know. And then... ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Real. You were really going through it. Kailey Waskall: After the nausea passed, actually felt like back to my baseline, which could because it's like the extended release. And so it was finally starting to wear out of my system because it had been over 12 at that point. But yeah, so then I was like, all right, here we go tomorrow. I'm doing the same thing. I woke up this morning and I took the meds like an hour ago and I still feel ⁓ Ashton McGrady: rate. took the meds and the meds are working. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. I feel like fine, which is good. but the exciting which I don't know if this is placebo or not, because it was literally the first day of medication. I started it purely I've been really struggling to initiate tasks. Like a lot of the executive functioning piece of like starting tasks and when things feel really big, I still have a hard time breaking them down. It's the craziest thing where I know all the strategies, but I think I need someone else to OT me. Ashton McGrady: That's good. Yeah. Kailey Waskall: And like help me work through it, you know, so I started The medication for that and last night when I was finally like through this entire gambit I was able to like start on something that I had really wanted to do for a few weeks and like hadn't And so I finally started it and now I have this like energy Yeah, so it was crazy ⁓ Let's bring up though, what's your what's your crown? Ashton McGrady: That's so exciting. We both had some interesting energy this week. ⁓ my crown is that at midnight last night we got new Harry Styles. It's been years. Listen, and this gave me the will to live, the album title is Kiss All Time Disco Occasionally I think we're crying because... Kailey Waskall: No, I like disco occasionally, that's so fun. Ashton McGrady: I thought we were gonna be disco-ing the whole album because a lot of the press he did, he's like, yeah, everybody's gonna be dancing. And I listened to it and I was like, actually I'm crying, but okay. that should tell you how much I love you. I am like three quarters of the way done with the album and I am here right now. I'm gonna finish the listen after get off of here. So you guys have caught me mid-listen, which ⁓ I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing. Kailey Waskall: Wow, you like us, Ashton McGrady: I know, I'm committed. I'm committed it did breathe life into me, especially because then I was like, yeah, and seeing him in August. So I'm so excited. You know, if you were a passionate fangirl, and I used let people shame me out of that feeling ⁓ of being able to fangirl proudly and loudly, but now at age 30, three, almost four, I don't give a I don't care anymore. And I'm gonna let my freak flag fly. Wow, I didn't get tongue tied over that. That was impressive. And I'm really just excited about this new era of Harry Styles. So if you're out there listening Harry's, just know in this one together. enough of me. I'm gonna pass this to you. What is your crown of the week? Kailey Waskall: Well first off, know Harry Styles is definitely listening to this right now, so we should speak directly to him because... Ashton McGrady: Listen, you cannot tell me that. will be delusional. Do not tell me that. ⁓ Kailey Waskall: We'll just DM him a link. Be like, we talked about you. He'll definitely see it too, obviously. Yep. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. So my crown is I last week, think it was last week, officially announced my occupational therapy business. bow bow. Again, I've been going on a journey of realizing that I'm actually really good at my job. And being like proud and okay with saying that out loud has been... Ashton McGrady: Sure, yeah, out of nowhere. I agree. So exciting! Yeah. Kailey Waskall: journey I have worked on knowing that I really do love being an OT. I just really hate the systems we have to work in. Like I don't love insur- insurance as a bait in my existence. I don't love medical model of needing to fix people, right? I find myself more of a top-down therapist I want to look at the whole Ashton McGrady: you Kailey Waskall: Which means that you're more using strategies and tools versus trying to remediate and fix the underlying processes. That would be a bottom-up approach. And a lot of what we're seeing on the internet is a lot of bottom-up approaches, especially if you're in the pediatric sphere with reflex integration and sensory integration, which don't necessarily not believe them. I just naturally am more pulled towards Ashton McGrady: Right. Kailey Waskall: these top-down environmental supporting, like the person in advocating for themselves and recognizing their own needs and creating systems that work for them versus like trying to fix all these tiny little foundational pieces because truly think it's more empowering and helpful if you're able to go where you are right now and find ways to make the environment work for you. And I've also... Ashton McGrady: I would agree with that. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. I think there's that like, this is something that I could talk about for hours with, right? Like the different types of strategies and evidence-based and sorry guys, this is a really long intro. but I finally was like, I'm going to start my own OT business because I'm so, I for the longest time was like, I hate being an OT. I don't like being an OT. I want to be something else. I want to blah, blah. Ashton McGrady: You can't. You Kailey Waskall: That was all a lie I told myself. The reason was I don't like working in systems, so I have to make my own. therefore I am. So I now am offering adult occupational therapy in Maryland. I'm really focused on like grooming hygiene routines for disabled and neurodivergent adults. And then also am still offering some pediatric services because I really do. Ashton McGrady: love that. Kailey Waskall: like working with kids and I really find that like a lot of the families I worked with just were struggling to play with their neurodivergent kids, especially those more high support needs autistic kids who were really little ⁓ just like super dysregulated all over the place. And I really want to help these families like understand ⁓ how can connect and engage with these kids in a way that is strengths based and just really all about connection and fun because that's really how I do my therapy and it's a skill that anyone learn. So I'm really excited about It's called Everyday Ease OT. And so if you're in Maryland and you feel like it, I accepting clients now. And I also do coaching across the US. So if you just want versus true occupational therapy, ⁓ those services are also available. But that was really exciting. Ashton McGrady: That is so exciting and I was, I was literally, beat me too, but I was like, where can they find you? Kailey Waskall: worry, I'll promote myself ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Always, always. We'll leave some links in the description of this episode to make sure you guys can find her, but that is so exciting. I'm so excited for this new chapter and for you to really lean into the things that you kept telling me you were so scared of doing that you didn't want to do, and now you're here doing it. So I'm proud of you. So should we get into our new beauty? Hear ye, hear ye, new beauty drops are on the way. Okay, so first up, I have been so excited to talk about this one. been watching all the marketing around it, ⁓ Amika body care line that just came out. Kailey Waskall: almost call it a masterclass in like staying true to your branding while making ⁓ more accessible packaging. For everyone listening, it like really bright pink, different pieces. There's like body wash, body butter, body oil, but the exciting part are the caps. So the caps are, Ashton McGrady: Agreed. Kailey Waskall: Curved almost like they're gonna look like little flowers if you were looking from a bird's-eye view But this is gonna make it so much easier to get these products open especially in the shower Which is where at least for like the body wash you're going to be using them now. It's not a pump which is like Come on bestie. Come on bestie We're almost there. Is it not a pump? I'm trying to see the top. Sorry guys Ashton McGrady: Like a flower? Yeah. Agreed. Okay. We were almost there. I know the body oil is a pump. I don't know about the wash, the body wash. Let's see. ⁓ Kailey Waskall: This why marketing is also important because I want to find a picture of the top and all I can find are people like touching their body with soap on it while holding the product and I'm like that's- Ashton McGrady: Yeah, like if we have to go looking hard. Yeah, don't make me marketing always include least a photo with the top off of your product. Kailey Waskall: Or even just like how you like, is it a twist open squeeze? in the shower, I don't know that you like fully take it off, which could be annoying, but the other pieces of the collection also have that same floral top, which is just going to make it easier to open. Ashton McGrady: Yeah, and like I said, the body oil is a pump. I would assume that this is, well, I know it is. It's very strongly fragrance. They have their like Aura scent. They released the body wash, or not the body wash, the body mist in it earlier year. No, last year. ⁓ Anyways, so that like scent that you from products, it's the same here from their haircare. So. ⁓ Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Ashton McGrady: If you are averse to fragrance, don't know that I would seek this one out because it is usually pretty strong. Kailey Waskall: ⁓ yeah, Amiga really loves their scents. So definitely, definitely a skip. But if you are someone who is looking for a new body oil and you need a pump and you need the cap to be somewhat easy to open, this is going to be fabulous. I'm so mad about the shower wash. Like I, can't tell what the top is. Ashton McGrady: can't find out if... I get frustrated when marketing. Like, give me bare minimum, okay? Kailey Waskall: just let me see what it looks like. And again, this is just why you should have or accessibility consultants or people who can look at your marketing and be like, as a consumer, like I'd wanna know this and I don't know this. So can you fix that? Ashton McGrady: In regards to our next launch, I'm in a bit of a pickle, if you will. Kailey Waskall: You're so funny! because elf dropped their glow reviver melting lip balm in big dill and it's pickle Ashton McGrady: I'm still laughing over this because I had not seen this drop, if I had not known what date it was, I would have thought this was in April Fools. I thought it was in April Fools when I saw it and I was like, Ashen, it's like February. Kailey Waskall: you They're just doing it early? No, you can- ⁓ it's out of stock! It's sold out! Ashton McGrady: Shut your mouth. Okay, which one of y'all freaks and cleared elf of Big Dill lip balm? Firstly, we're have a talk and I think you need therapy. Kailey Waskall: okay, I do like pickles. do like Ashton McGrady: I also love pickles, but what? Kailey Waskall: I don't think I wanna smell them on my lips. Ashton McGrady: same. Like, I don't even like the, the, like, after I grab a pickle out of the jar and my hands kind of smell like that from, holding my pickle. I don't even like that. Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. Ashton McGrady: Which one of y'all freaks real bought ⁓ up all the Big Del balm? That's crazy. I mean, I'm not gonna yuck your yum, I guess. I also, it's disturbingly green. Kailey Waskall: They said some people wanted So I just not cool? ⁓ That's okay. A sheer green also. But it's sheer, like it barely looks green on the lips. It basically looks clear on the lips. Ashton McGrady: Okay, fine. never really like these the packaging ⁓ Traditional lip balms. I there's got to be a better solution out there know you can like roll it up with something like you can use like a squeezer to get that out if it's really difficult, but Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. Yeah, but. The squeezer is also hard for lip balms because lip balms like in your routine are something that you normally throw into your bag. So it's not necessarily like what are you gonna you're gonna whip out this big plastic thing with your lip balm and like push it like you can I guess but that just feels. Ashton McGrady: Right. You know, for me too, it's usually like the end of my skincare routine, so my hands are like all kind of slick and covered in skincare. That's like finishing touch. So yeah, I know. hope one day have some better packaging for lip balms, but is basic. This is pretty typical. I just needed to talk about the pickle lip balm flavor, because I was both disturbed and Kailey Waskall: Right. Yeah, I mean, heck yeah. I love brands trying new things and obviously people wanted it because it sold out. I do wonder how many they made. made like five? ⁓ Ashton McGrady: do they make twinny and it's sold out? That would be diabolical. Kailey Waskall: No, no, that's so fun. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Ashton McGrady: You're so welcome. when I saw the marketing, I was like, I actually do need to talk about this. ⁓ Kailey Waskall: Cause I do, a pickle back shot. Like when you do whiskey and then there used to be, when I lived in Florida, there used to be a bar in Orlando where they would hollow out like big dill pickles and they would pour the whiskey into the hollowed out pickle. So you'd, you'd take the shot and then you'd eat the pickle. It was so good. I had it like. Ashton McGrady: Same. Shut your mouth. That would change my life. Listen, if I've had a bad day, a pickle. I can't tell you how many pickles I ate this week, like an ungodly amount of pickles, okay? I opened a fresh jar this week and I think I've eaten like three quarters of it I am a pickle girl turn through. I just don't think I want a pickle lip balm and that's okay if you do, I respect it. Kailey Waskall: I will never yuck your yum, but it's so funny. It's silly. It is silly. Ashton McGrady: It is funny. It's so unserious. honestly, I do love when the industry gets unserious like this there's something for everyone, okay? Kailey Waskall: It's so fun. we need to move on though to something else. The air, acid acne spray. ⁓ Ashton McGrady: I saw this and I was so excited because I know so many folks who are like, I need X in my routine, but I need it to be in a spray form. So this is exciting. Kailey Waskall: Exactly. This is so cool. So it is an aerosol of the acid acne body spray. So it's going to help clear breakouts and prevent new ones. It's just, it's such a good option usually your salicylic acid in like a serum or like a gel. So is so cool. honestly, the Salterre, I really like their packaging. I feel like it's relatively easy to open because they have little grooves. Their Rolon deodorant fabulous. ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Also, it's fragrance free, which I love. It's also, know if you noticed, it's that continuous fine mist spray. So love that. Truly, feel one piece packaging cannot meet everybody's individual needs because that's just the nuance of disability and chronic illness and our varying individual needs. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, yeah. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm, mm-hmm, Ashton McGrady: But I will say I love when we have options. like a win for me. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, such a win. Like, this is so freaking cool. I'm... ⁓ Ashton McGrady: not as literally about to jump into talking about what I feel is a competitor of theirs. I did not clock that when I was putting this together. Okay, well, I don't know, I feel like Salter and Notarium are kind of competitors, Kailey Waskall: That's okay. Ashton McGrady: They kind of give similar vibes to me. But I want to talk about the multi-peptide advanced body I don't know if you've tried their multi-peptide advanced serum, which I do love. also I don't know if you've tried their body washes. ⁓ I love the packaging of their body washes. Kailey Waskall: ⁓ I love the packaging of their body. have one and actually I just emptied it. like silky, soft bot, I don't remember the specific. silky is not the right word The get glowing, the glow, the glow one. Ashton McGrady: Ooh, I don't think I've tried that one. The Glowgitter, that is my favorite one. So the Glowgitter body wash ⁓ is good. the of it is very unique, ⁓ love the packaging. I used to fight with the packaging a little they have fixed it but notoriously my products would like fall ⁓ off. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. Ashton McGrady: ⁓ a surface and the because the top so tall which in some ways can be good because you might be able to like use adaptive tools more easily but for me clumsy me i would or a product would fall and the pump would break off so supposedly that's better now i love like the surface area on this pump is insane Kailey Waskall: Mmm. Do you want to also know something wild? They also have a salicylic acid body spray. Ashton McGrady: Shut your mouth. Kailey Waskall: looking at it right now. They have a salicylic acid body bundle, which has the salicylic acid body wash and body spray. Ashton McGrady: Guys, the girlies Guys, ⁓ did say? There's a lot of overlap here. the multi-peptide advance is geared towards more mature skin. Obviously it's got those peptides. It's supposed to have a rice amino acid complex, E, antioxidants, and it's supposed to help with roughness of the skin. So. it does also say can be used as a facial cleanser. That's in the description. We love like a multi-use product. Kailey Waskall: Ooh, I like that. I know, it makes it so much easier when you just have like one product that you can just like put everywhere. Ashton McGrady: here this. ⁓ I truly stand by their body washes. I do think that they are incredible. I love the way that they've kind of like shaped their pump where, you you can use like a full palm. You're not just having to press down with a finger, which for some can be painful. So I'm here for this. It's of line they already Again, we love options, but yeah, I feel like the girlies are fighting a little bit. I feel like Sultarin, Noturium ⁓ up against each other. I feel like they also feel like they're competitors, you know? Kailey Waskall: Yeah, they definitely, mean, again, I would recommend if you are in the need for getting new things, I like supporting both brands. I like Notarium's. have the lip balms, but it's the doe foot applicator, those twist off love those. And then the Salterre, I literally... So I have both of these brands in my skincare cabinet right now. they're fabulous. truly... ⁓ Ashton McGrady: same. I also love the Salterre. There is a hyaluronic acid body serum ⁓ I use from them that I really, really like. So feel like they are killing the game in body care. They're one of my favorite, both of them are one of my favorite like go-to brands. So there's room for both at the table. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. Ashton McGrady: Rare Beauty just dropped an entire eye collection that I am so excited about. Kailey Waskall: Tell me why. Ashton McGrady: Okay, we get it. Firstly, I do love their mascara. And so the fact that they dropped it in a brown is so fun. Same for their Perfect Strokes Liner. I'm loving seeing it in a ⁓ I personally, as a blonde with skin, I tend to gravitate towards brown mascaras, brown liners, because don't know, looks less bold and harsh on my skin. But the thing I'm most excited about is the eyeshadow palette because I'm 99.999 % sure that they leaned into the magnet with this one. Kailey Waskall: yeah, they had to have or else it would just like flop open based the packaging design. Ashton McGrady: And I do love that. Also, think it really, everybody knows like Selena's iconic like smokey eye look. I feel like this palette is very much giving that. And I think it's also just a great travel palette. Like it's not too big, it's eight shades. I think is something you could easily take with you and create a lot of looks with. So I was very excited to see it in the rotation. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, no, it looks absolutely fabulous. Rare Beauty, again, we know a lot of times are building with accessibility in mind. this palette looks absolutely very much natural. So if you're looking for an everyday naturals palette, it's got a good mix of mattes and shimmers. It's got that magnet closure, I am interested to see how easy it is to open with the magnet, because it is like flush against each other when it's closed, but hopefully it looks like it's like got some surface area to put your fingers on. So fingers crossed, it's not too bad. Their mascara is so good. It's like. Ashton McGrady: It is really good. I think it's underrated, personally. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, I agree. So the brown is really exciting. The liquid liner, this all it all kind of looks like it's somewhat their soft matte design, not fully. It's almost like a demi matte. I feel like when they have these. So it's still a little slippery. For liner, if you are really struggling with like the control of it, I know sometimes even just like putting your elbow on a desk or like having it tucked in close to your body. Ashton McGrady: Right. Kailey Waskall: can give you a little bit more control Ashton McGrady: I did that naturally too, because I realized it was a struggle for me and I started doing it to accommodate myself. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, so we there's like a saying that it's like proximal stability for distal mobility and what that basically means is like the more stable your center is like the core the closer you are to like the big parts of your body the more control you're gonna have in your hands because you're giving yourself that like stability. So if you ⁓ doing makeup and you're like why is this so hard for me and your elbow is like flying up in the air like a bird Try bringing it in closer. Try putting it on a table ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Also, I was just thinking about like, if you need to build it up, like putting something like a hair tie or a rubber band or something around it, because sometimes it can be really hard to like grip those. And then like you're doing something that requires so much precision. a reminder that, you know what? It kind of doesn't require that much precision because girl, that up with a makeup wipe, okay? Touch it with some, ⁓ if you up there and your wing is busted, go back and fix it later. Nothing is permanent. Kailey Waskall: Or like put tape that's s- you can have a guide. There's no reason not to have a guide, honestly. Like why are we trying to be perfect with it? Ashton McGrady: That too. You can have a guide. Liquid Eyeliner, I from so many people, is so intimidating, and I that, but there are so many things that we can do to make it less scary. And remember that makeup is meant to be fun, it's not meant to be that serious. you know, you find whatever way adapt that works for you. Obviously, I do wish, in a perfect you know, every piece of makeup, every... beauty product, every hygiene product that we interact with would be accessible, but that's not the case. adapt in one way, adapt in several ways, find a way to make it work because Kailey Waskall: You deserve to do the makeup you wanna do. Ashton McGrady: yes, yes, yes, snap, snap, snaps over here. ⁓ Kailey Waskall: Wow, we're knowledge today. Ashton McGrady: really feel like this episode has been therapy hour. Kailey Waskall: Apparently we needed ⁓ Ashton McGrady: I think we did, but that's just kind of like where we both were at. So this next one ⁓ from Tear Tear, which you guys know we have been in, K-Beauty has had us in a choke hold. So Tear Tear is no exception to that. And they've just recently dropped a Mood Glider lip and blush stick. I love when a product... It can be like, I love when I can create a monochrome look. I love when a product can be used in multiple places, just like we were talking about with the body wash that can also be used as a face wash. you have something that, you know, can be used across the board, it just makes it easier. Less products to open and interact with, it's so nice. ⁓ I feel like, and I get your vibe on this. I feel like they were kind of aiming for, and I've some comparisons. I feel like they were kind of coming at House Labs neck this one. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, I could totally see that with a similar packaging. So basically the packaging is like a small silver cylinder that you pull off the top and it's got the curved packaging. I don't if we can fully call it the same thing because the house labs to me looks longer and bigger, which going to give you more surface area to hold onto it. they're both like a similar packaging, right? Cause they're both the shimmer, shimmer is the wrong word. They're both the mirrored kind of slippery packaging. But the tier tier definitely looks more like short and squat versus the house labs looks a little bit more like longer, but still both cylindrical. So I think that's going to inform which one would work better for you. If you need like a shorter one that might be a little bit wider. but requires you to hold kind of with those three fingers like in all of the marketing for the tier tier, they're holding in like three fingers and it looks somewhat small versus the house labs. You can probably get your entire fist around there and it's gonna give you a little bit more grip. Yeah, so it's It's not like a standout product to me. I get worried when. Ashton McGrady: Right. I would agree. Kailey Waskall: products are like really short and squat because again I find there's a there's a very thin line between too big too small too tall like Goldilocks ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Same. The story of life. I will say I did notice that the shade Rose Drizzle is very similar to my favorite shade from House Lab Stick and that is Glassy Ginger. They very, ⁓ very and not in a bad way, but like again, if you're looking for a different option if one versus the other works for you, I can also, correct me if wrong, but I could also almost make the argument that Short and Stubby might you a little more Kailey Waskall: Hmm. Ashton McGrady: Control? Kailey Waskall: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it for sure would. Again, this is where it goes back to that nuance of it depends on what you need. So if you need more control, but you have the ability to grasp with kind of like a smaller of fingers, then the tier tier might be good because you're shorter, you're closer to the face, you get more control of where you're gonna put the product versus the house labs is longer. But house labs is Ashton McGrady: Right. Kailey Waskall: longer so that if you need, if you have less like strength almost, or if you have less dexterity and you need kind of more of what we call like a gross grasp, so you're using your entire hand versus those small fingers, then the house labs might be better for you. Ashton McGrady: And again, I will harp it all day every day. Options are great when we have similar things or things in the same category that have some varying packaging. One might work for you versus the other. I'm here for it. It's fine. you know, again, I love my house labs one, but I would consider trying it in the future if I was like out of that I won't rule it out. I don't hate it. I will say that I hate the mirrored packaging like across the board. Every brand that uses that, I hate it. Kailey Waskall: ⁓ yeah. I don't even it because a lot of times brands also will like send things for PR and like this type of packaging is, ⁓ it's gonna photograph of yucky. Ashton McGrady: It's not cute. like, it reminds me of stainless steel. Like you get the fridge home and then all your fingerprints are all over it and it's just kind of a pain. I don't know. I don't think it's cute. And it's also obviously very slippery. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. Yeah, no, it's something you can always add co-band to the self-adhesive wrap. find those work really well on that kind of cylindrical packaging because again, it Ashton McGrady: ⁓ that's smart. Even like the, did it to my about face bronzer because same thing. you wrapped the, you wrapped like texture sticker around it. Yeah. Cause it is, it's like way too slippery to hold on to, especially again, if you've already done like skincare, you have stuff on your hands. Kailey Waskall: I did. Did it help? Yeah, yeah, was it? Ashton McGrady: like putting sensory sticker or some sort of texture grip on the base of the product. You could also put it, I remember if you also put it on the top, but anyways, like you could put it on multiple places on there. Or did you put co-band? Either way, you put something on there it was helpful. Kailey Waskall: so I like the co-band for like when you're using it to hold on to longer periods of time because it gives you a little bit more cushion. So it's just more comfortable versus I like using the texture stickers more as a grip aid to get products open. So I probably ⁓ wrapped where would it in co-band and then if it wasn't Ashton McGrady: there. Kailey Waskall: If it was gonna be like too much to put both in co-band, I probably did the texture stickers on where you would pull off. So you're getting that grip on one side and then on the other side, you're able to hold on, but in a more like comfortable way. Ashton McGrady: So guys, rest assured, she therapizes me too. ⁓ Okay, it's not therapy, excuse me. She's just a good ally, okay? Kaylee fixed my products that are a hot mess express because again, like the whole point of occupational therapy, not that this is medical advice and not that you're actively practicing on this podcast. Kailey Waskall: No, it's not therapy. I just adapt. Ashton McGrady: But the whole point, right, is being able to do the things that you love and use the things that you already use. And I think that that's, you know, we talk about all this new beauty, but there are probably things in your collection that you would love to use, but maybe you purchase them at the height of the hype and you, you know, realize after opening the packaging, because a lot of times we can't test in stores to see if something is accessible for us ⁓ or like... Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. Ashton McGrady: going to a storefront is not accessible. So sometimes you get a product and you're like, ⁓ my God, I don't even know if I can use this. And been me too. And ⁓ Kaylee really come with some ⁓ great solutions me. So that's definitely also something you guys could, our listeners could write in about. ⁓ We can through and troubleshoot a product. If you have something you love, but it's just not accessible to you, we can always troubleshoot. Kailey Waskall: Ciao. Yeah, that's like one of my favorite things to do is problem solve. It's so fun to chat through and like go and really dive into the nuance, which is so hard to do on the internet. So I'd like love when I'm able to be like, okay, but this and what do you think about this and what about this angle? And like, it's just so fun to be able to find like successes and find things that are gonna work for every individual. just so fun. It's so fun. Ashton McGrady: It's so fun. Okay, the next thing that we are gonna talk about the Bloom FX launch at Ulta. I don't know if you've seen this happening. Kailey Waskall: have actually never heard of this brand. Ashton McGrady: Shut your mouth. Okay, okay, I have, sent over some products, I wanna say last year. is a very, like it was a small brand and they've been building for a while. be one of my special interests as an actually human being is skincare, so this tracks. their skincare is powered by I think is so fun and almost feels like whimsical to me. So you will find that in all of their products, but they literally launched at Ulta, I believe like end of February, February 22nd in 750 Ulta stores. ⁓ But I wanted to about it because I, you know, they have a lot of great products. I really like their Lip oil, it's SPF 40. I think it's great. They have some like natural color options. I really like their sort of like hydrating toner, which is bi-phase. So I say that this can be difficult because you do have to like shake it up. We've talked about this before. But most notably their serum packaging. Kailey Waskall: Talk to me. Ashton McGrady: There's serum packaging and we have kind of talked about this before because I've had a couple products in the past that are similar. If you've used the K18 hair oil, it's like this. If you've used, trying to think, which one was it? Kailey Waskall: it's the flat top, right? instead of having, yeah, so instead of having the kind of squish piece, you just push down. So it's almost like a button versus a tiny squeeze. Ashton McGrady: It's the button top. And you asked me before, I do prefer this personally just because I feel like doesn't as much ⁓ fine motor for me, I think personally, because I can use like, I can use a large surface. I can use my thumb, can use my palm to like pull, you the and it pulls it up into the dropper, which I think is so cool. I hate the little like squeeze droppers. I think that... Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Ashton McGrady: Firstly, that's just kind of painful for me personally as someone with arthritis and of hypermobility in my hands. I don't like that. I like the button option. Again, we talk about options. Like this just something different. And they have that across a couple of their serums, the vitamin C oil and regenerative serum. I haven't tried every product in their line, But I will say I have tried, I like, I think they're one of those brands that's pretty thoughtful with their launches. So they're not launching a product like every other week. And I do appreciate that. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, no, I mean, I think again, like you said, the dropper, find those little, they're not plastic. What is the texture of those droppers? The squishy ones. ⁓ excuse me. Yeah, it's rubber, the squishy ones with the rubber. Ashton McGrady: Almost like rubber. Is it rubber? Kailey Waskall: so the like rubberized tips, I find also you have to pinch in a very specific pattern to get a full like load of the product into the pipette, the little tube. Ashton McGrady: I'm talking about that. get so mad. My Vegasmore serum like one of ones that I think about with this and you have to this super full like dropper for it to have its full intended effect. I'm like sitting there squeezing then I'm like, ⁓ I didn't get the right amount. Squeeze it out. Try again. And that's so annoying. Kailey Waskall: It's so annoying. that also is another like energy saving tip because it really is just like a one-push, well, a two-push, right? Because you push down once to load and then push down to release. But you're not like fighting like, which way do I squeeze and how do I tilt the bottle and blah, blah, blah. ⁓ Ashton McGrady: write and then to release it. No, they make me so mad. Truly, that's one way to rage bait me. Honestly, when I have to use those droppers and I can't get the full load up to the mark it says I'm supposed to, oh no. that's actually diabolical. Kailey Waskall: Mm-hmm. because you love following the rules. Ashton McGrady: Hey. Kailey Waskall: No, so do I. I really, can't. Ashton McGrady: And I also feel like it's gotta be for a reason, right? Like has to be, I'm sure that there is a certain amount of product to be effective. I don't know, maybe that's just me, but yes, I want, if it tells me I'm supposed to have X of product, I want to have X amount of product when I apply it. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, and I think they also a lot of times use the law of like averages people's faces are all different sizes. So what is a perfect dosage for you might not be a perfect dosage for me. So as someone is ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Yeah, different sizes. Right. And thinking about my vagabond, I'm like, girl, I got a big head. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. She's like, I need two full syringes. Ashton McGrady: This is sending me, okay. think it's time to go in to ask the collective. And I'm actually excited to talk about this this week. Kailey Waskall: Yeah, I agree. Every week we answer one question from our listeners in Ask the Collective so you can DM us, you can email us, you can leave us comments. ⁓ get those questions to us so that we're able to kind of chat with you guys and answer any of questions you might have. This week's comes from Sprinkles and Coconut and they asked, you recommend a setting spray that has a fatter nozzle? It's hard to press small ones, especially those mini perfumes. And you are so right. Ashton McGrady: Is she talking about this perfume samples? Cause those really are diabolical. Kailey Waskall: Those are so bad. Ashton McGrady: They're so bad. was actually, I was really excited about this question. One, because I knew we could both from like lived experience and like your professional expertise, I felt like we would have some good recommendations. I'm very proud of what we came up with. Kailey Waskall: you want to take it away with like the actual products and then I can talk about ⁓ Ashton McGrady: Yes, so we recommended to her L'Oreal Infallible, which if you used one size, I hate to say it, they're pretty similar. Some people even say they prefer the Infallible. So off the D'Nessa Myricks Beauty Blurring Balm Mattifying Setting Spray. is such a mouthful. But this one, if you have dry I don't know that this one is necessarily for you unless maybe it's summer and you're ⁓ maybe sweaty. it truly is, it does what it says it does. It is mattifying, but I love the area on top of it is wonderful. The Pixi Fixing Mist, which I know there's a little bit of a difference between a fixing mist and a setting spray, do not come from my neck. I know, but I'm trying to give options, which is similar packaging to the Danessa Myricks one, but it's not got that same like mattifying effect. So maybe that's an option. and the Morphe Life Proof Continuous Setting Mist, which I would again kind of categorize, it's aerosol, so I would kind of categorize it with the one size, the Infallible. Kailey Waskall: both options that are good. The L'Oreal Infallible is that continuous mist, so it's that more aerosol. and then the Dinesse Myrix is like wider nozzle, so you can push down with a few more fingers or like parts your body. Ashton McGrady: Hey, Danessa, if you're listening to this, I would love that, but in a glowy version. It would be so good. want to glow the summer. Kailey Waskall: Ooh. So we know. Yeah, our listeners, Harry Styles and Dinesh Amai. Ashton McGrady: Listen, can't tell me nothing. Miss Danessa, I would love that for summer. don't know if ⁓ we're your radar or if that's anything you would consider, but I I love a glowy skin moment, especially in the summer. And I really love the packaging of that though. So I want it in other formulas. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. So if you also like, again, going to the adaptation piece of it, because I really love my one size, like you said, the L'Oreal Enfileable is a larger continuous miss cap where the one size is that kind of small nozzle, There an adaptation that's a paint ⁓ spray basically like, addition that gives you, turns it into a whole like hand pump versus the finger. And so I obviously had to this on Amazon. I bought two versions and I found the one version that works and then the other version it's not good. But I put on the one size aerosol can and it, God, it made it so easy. you do have to pinch and like position it in. Ashton McGrady: which is so cool. Kailey Waskall: So that part was a little tricky and like might need some help. Yeah, the loading the product into it definitely requires some strength because you have to like pinch open to like fit the product. Ashton McGrady: like the loading the product into it. Yeah, and I feel like that's something that maybe like you could get some assistance with like before and just like maybe keep it on the product if it's one that you reach for daily. Kailey Waskall: Yeah. I still have it on my one size. Like I have not taken it off yet and it's been fine. No. Ashton McGrady: That makes sense. You're like, it's not worth it to me. also seen like some companies that make adaptive tools making similar things, but then, you know, ⁓ love supporting small businesses, but then we talk about like the disability tax once it's made as adaptive tool versus something you just find out in the world for some other purpose, you're usually more for it. And that is unfortunate, but that is the world we live in, guys. ⁓ Kailey Waskall: Yeah, and I do wonder, there's gotta be also if like anyone 3D prints, there's gotta be a way to 3D print this. Like is not my expertise, but I am sure. Ashton McGrady: ⁓ I'm sure. I actually would love to have a printer ⁓ for the sake of making, like, a bajillion adaptive tools. That would be so fun. Kailey Waskall: I know, my problem would be I'd like get the printer and I'd be like, well, how do I design this on the internet? What do I do? And like, I would. Ashton McGrady: I'm scared it would turn into a hyperfixation and I... Kailey Waskall: That might be a good thing though. Like that's like a... Okay. Ashton McGrady: Maybe it is. I don't know. You never know what we can accomplish. I am so, did we answer our question? I think so, but. Kailey Waskall: We answered the question, that would be so funny if we were like, answer to your question is buy a 3D printer and make your own. Ashton McGrady: Stop. I'm dead. Kailey Waskall: Before we move on to our next segment, because yes, there is a new next segment this time, please do, like I said, send us questions, email us, DM us. email is contact at wishingwellco.com. DM at Accessibly Ever on Instagram, respond to our stories. Like we really love answering any questions you have. now... ⁓ Ashton McGrady: And all of this, including our recommendations, are going to be in the show notes of this episode. So that out there. That's where you can find us. ⁓ ⁓ we're gonna move on to our next new segment, I'm so excited to introduce the godmother fix. No wands or pumpkin carriages needed, just practical magic. This is where we leave you with something to think about, try or carry with you into the week. Kailey Waskall: Wow, what an introduction. So our fairy godmother fix for this week is we want you to audit one product you already own. You don't have to cancel the brand. We're not telling you to throw the product away. We just want you to start kind of noticing in your own routine what products are easy for you, what products are hard for you, also come up with ways of like, how could I adapt this? Or like, what's going on here? Because when you to really look into your own products, you start to see what's more accessible and what's more inaccessible. also can kind of audit products when you're looking for new things to buy and really decide what products do you want to buy that are going to work great for you. Ashton McGrady: Here are some questions we are going to encourage you to ask yourself, you open a product independently? ⁓ you use it one-handed? Does it require grip strength, twisting or pinching? Would you recommend it maybe? know you guys are, ⁓ don't have to be a professional to answer this, but would you recommend it to someone with tremors or chronic pain or low vision? It is exactly what Kayleigh said. Accessibility starts with noticing and the more we train ourselves, to see the harder they are to ignore and the easier it is to advocate ask for better design, which is exactly what we do here on this podcast. If this episode felt helpful, consider subscribing, sharing it with your bestie, or leaving a review we can keep the dream alive. Kailey Waskall: And the lights on. love you, love you so much and we'll see you next week. Ashton McGrady: Bye.
