Welcome to Speak the Language Podcast, presented by Ag Up Equipment. I'm Lake Pickle, and in this show, my trusty co-hosts Jordan Blissett and myself are going to do our very best to entertain you a lot and educate you a little. I think that's the right balance anyway. Look, if you like the outdoors, conservation, hunting, wildlife, anything and everything revolving land and the natural world, along with a good hunting story every now and then, well, you're in the right place. Now, time for today's show. ⁓ October. I was about to say September. October the sixth. It's October the fifth. It's gonna be ⁓ the sixth when this comes out. Yeah. One week in October already. Isn't that wild? That's w really wild. Really, really really Guess what has I I don't know about you, but like a month from today Okay. I'll be in the Midwest. Me too. ⁓ a little bit after you a hundred and ten percent. I mean it's gonna be variable. few days 'cause I'm gonna be watching the weather. But yeah. Got a little bit of information this weekend about Kansas. That that picture you sent? Yeah. Mm, pretty strong. I hope I can find that dear. Yeah, I got a farmer buddy out there sent me a picture. There is a chance. There is a chance it may be a fake. ⁓ yeah, I guess suppose with that crew it's I wouldn't put it past. I got sent a picture of like a two hundred and twenty inch deer probably. That's a bit ⁓ yeah. When you sent it, even with I mean it still had velvet on it. The little picture you sent, but I'm like, you take the velvet off of that, he's still over two hundred. I think conservatively he's like two two twenty. That's a l that's a a it's a lot of bone. It is a giant deer. So who knows? Lifetime deer. He may not speak. Deer. Don't bring up lifetime deer. We've had a lot of a lot of action. ⁓ for it. Just to be October the fifth, there has been some stuff going down. There has been, man, we are back in the throes of being big time deer hunters here. We got one man that needs a a shirt tail cut off and another man has already been to the hospital. I've been d yeah, the the deer have just taken it hard on us right out of the gate. So we got any ⁓ housekeeping matters to take care of first or ⁓ I I think we can get straight into today. I I mean th the only thing that I can think of is because between the the moose story that Mr. Thrash told, which he did a excellent job on. He did a did a good job, surprise to solve. I very surprised. He did a good job. And then last week you and I did one one thing we have not done is formerly which is I mean it's seems like it's been a while ago now, but we've not on here we have not talked about ⁓ the deer season kickoff event yeah since it happened. Yeah. ⁓ and that did happen. When that was September the fifteenth fifteenth. Almost a month ago now. Or three w three weeks ago. Yeah. ⁓ that was a heck of a time. ⁓ thanks to everybody that came out and and hung out. It was a just a good time. Yeah. Good music, good folks. Got to see some buddies and make some new friends and just socialize everybody and get talking about deer hunting. The only thing bad about it. It was super hot, but you can't It was very I what are you gonna do? You can't control that. Yeah. The ⁓ so I do that reminds me we did have there's some folks that man, really it I mean, how I was looking back at like dates and we started this show in September. Mm-hmm 2017. We are we are on our way. We are officially a nine year old show now. That's crazy, isn't it? That's wild. September of twenty seventeen is when it started. ⁓ and so there's some folks that came and talked to us at that event that just that never gets old, you know, folks that ⁓ have just stuck with us for a time. And so ⁓ that made me think about talking about that. ⁓ fella by the name Mr. Randy who came and spoke to us at that show sent us ⁓ sent us this email. I'm gonna read it real quick. ⁓ says Lakin Jordan, enjoyed meeting and talking with you in Canton ⁓ at the kickoff event. We were discussing trad bows and I told you about my son who builds bows. A week ago Saturday he had his first trad deer, a two by two Muley in Nebraska. He and his wife were driving and looking. They spotted some about two hundred yards out. He snuck up a draw to them. ⁓ this bunk this buck jumped up at twelve yards and he gave him a twenty three yard shot. That's a poke with a trad bow. Yeah. ⁓ Lake commented that the deer up there can be a little dumb sometimes and I have to agree. I can't imagine one of our whitetails stopping and giving a shot opportunity like this one did, Randy. Yeah, he Torched him. Torched him, yeah. And he built he built that bow. That's what's cool is he built that bow himself. That's a good looking bow. I know. If he wouldn't have told me that he built it, it looked like, you know, like a professional, you know, company that builds bows. That's that's pretty sharp right there. Absolutely. But yeah, no, ⁓ Mr. Randy came by and spoke and a couple of other folks did, and that just that means a lot. So but yeah, that's the only housekeeping item I can think of of today ⁓ was mentioning that and then reading that email. Other than that, you and I have nothing to do but to get into the action. You and I have ⁓ do you want to go first or do you want me to go first? ⁓ mine's sh mine is shorter. You can go first. Mine is shorter. So on this show I said that October the first, the day that deer season opened up, I would be deer hunting that afternoon. Mm-hmm. Well, Lo and You're a liar. I'm a liar. I'm coming out with it, I lied. I lied. I didn't mean to lie, but I lied. Whether you're ready for it or not, hunting season is pretty much here. I mean, think about it. We've got some early goose and teal seasons right around the corner. If you live or have any travel plans up for the prairie states, those duck seasons aren't far away. Heck, Louisiana is shooting blackbelly whistling ducks in October this year. The point I am trying to make is that we're all about to be out hunting. And I can tell you what I'm gonna have in my shell bag, whether I'm dove hunting, goose hunting, or duck hunting, and that is rogue ammunition. Rogue manufactures quality controlled ammunition that you can trust. Each shell is hand loaded in their shop to ensure only the highest standards in performance and consistency. Let me tell you, this is what Jordan and I both shoot now, and the results speak for themselves. I promise you, this is not just an ad. This stuff flat out works. I would stake my reputation on it. Try it out for yourself by going to rogueammunition.com or you can find a dealer near you. Rogue Ammunition, shot count that matters. And by the time I drove out there and then I I know myself, this this plays into the crescendo of the story, if you will. ⁓ some might say that it's a good idea to, you know, leave and get your equipment out and you know re refamiliarize yourself with your climbing stand or your saddle or whatever. I never do. I I just I just always know the first hunt of the year I'm gonna get to the tree and be like, let's see if I can remember how to do this, you know what I Yeah, see see how much stuff I've forgotten. And so I was like, dude, it's five o'clock. It take me a half hour to get there by the time I walk in and I know I'm gonna be forgetting something, s you know, so I was just like, I won't go. So I ended up not going until Saturday afternoon. And I really didn't have that high of hopes. It was kind of crummy weather, it was warm. ⁓ it was like a east southeast wind, which like east winds just I I don't know So that's always been having something out of the east. Yeah. And so I was just like, but I'll go. I was like, you know what, I'll get this ⁓ I'll get this knock the rust off hunt out of the way. And I'd even go to my own place. I went to the national forest. ⁓ really? Yeah. And went fa went in there to a spot where I found some deer early last year. I got in there and ⁓ Got to the tree and start climbing and it takes me a while 'cause I'm like, ⁓ anyway, get up there, start hunting. I'm sweating, but I'm like, hey, we're hunting. And as far as I can tell, other than it like I was definitely rusty throwing up sticks and getting my saddle platform on, but it wasn't terrible. I was like, Man, this is actually going pretty good. We didn't s wasn't seeing nothing. Getting the last hour of light and I'm just kinda like, cool. cool thinking about what I'm do when I get home and where am I gonna come in here again and by that time I catch movement and I saw two doughs, one of which ⁓ came in and got to about forty three yards. She was eating ⁓ white oak acorns. It was just like a little drain where there's a bunch of them. That's what I was hunting. And ⁓ she got to about forty three yards. And I thought about it. I got my bow off the hook and she it was starting to get dim And there was I mean, it wasn't like some serious need needle threading, but my arrow was gonna have to get through some stuff. And I was like, Man, let's just see if she gets any closer. Yeah. Forty three, I know my limitations and a forty three yard shot through the woods, I just was like, I don't think it's a good idea. And ⁓ she started acting like she was gonna feed a little bit closer and then windswirled or or s I'm assuming the wind swirled. I never felt it or anything, but I she just kinda picked up and trotted back up out of the drain to the other side. Never blew, never nothing. I'm just assuming it was just such a still day, maybe that's what happened. But so I'm like, well, you know, saw some deer, knocked the rust off. I realized everything that I've forgotten and I now I remember how to, you know, put my climbing sticks up and my get in my saddle in a relatively fluid order. Let's climb down, get out of here and go back to the house, eat supper. Well, I get down and then I also remember that I am also rusty at putting the stuff back on my pack. 'Cause you know when you like you gotta put the platform on, you gotta stack the sticks a certain way. A certain way you gotta do it. Otherwise 'cause there's nothing that drives me insane if I'm walking and I'm clanking. Yeah. You know. So I'm figuring that out. By the time I get to walking back, and I've got about a f I don't know, not crazy yard long, maybe about a four or four hundred and fifty yard long walk back to the truck. Well, I get to walking And ⁓ some thick woods. ⁓ I'm not like on a i it's a very when I say an old road of an old two track of some sort, when I say that, I mean you can't see it from the road. I found the two track on ⁓ LIDAR, you know, but it's still it's grown up, it's thick in there. And I'm walking and I'm walking and all of a sudden I take a step and ⁓ when I set my foot down there was no ground there. I just went. What what had happened was there was some kind of hole in the ground that went about up to my knee that it was one dark, two completely covered with pine straw and leaves. I couldn't s it just look like the ground. And I took a step and I just went Did you hit the ground? No, I caught myself. ⁓ that's where that came from. Ooh. I caught it was when you me at least, I I did this before quail hunting with Gary one time too, and you go to fallen, you go to Either catch yourself or just trying to grab something and like I grabbed a devil's walking stick plant. I did that one time. So it's thickened there, so a a thorns just went up my arm right there. ⁓ and I've done that before. Like ⁓ stomp hole. Yeah. I I I've stepped in holes before that I didn't see and you kinda fall and you're like, ooh, you know, it just doesn't feel great. But when I landed on that one, I'm like, Yeah, that hurt. I I landed my foot like if this is my foot, th the way the hole was shaped or whatever I l I my foot was bent forward and I like landed like that. It was like pretty toes in the ground. A pretty violent a ankle roll is what it was. And I was like, and I just kinda stood there for a second. I was like, Mmm, that hurts. Had to gather myself for a second. And I still had at this point, cause at at the ⁓ my ankle it you know when when something happens, sometimes it'll hurt really, really bad and you give a few seconds and the pain kind of subsides. Yeah. So I was trying, I was like, ooh, this hurts. And I it it the pain was lingering and I was like, How far am I from the truck? And I was still three hundred yards. But I sat there a little bit longer, and the pain went down. I was like, I may be all right. So I get up out of there and I I limped a little bit, but I walked pretty okay back to the truck, drove home. Didn't think a whole lot about it. I mean I taught when I got home I was I was limping a little bit, so I told Lacey, Hey, I stepped in a stump hole and Will you massage my foot? Anyway, I I didn't think much about it. I woke up the next morning, that thing was swole up. I was like, ⁓ no. ⁓ my god. Man down. First week of season. Long story short, let's see if I can get this in the camera or not. Man is wearing for y'all that's not watching this, he is wearing a boot. Yeah. A hard plastic. That's a pretty nice boot. You must have bought that new. I got it this morning. ⁓ man. Went to the ouch. Can I sign it? No. STL for life. ⁓ though I went to I was gonna be I I was gonna be like every other man in America, I feel like, and be like, I don't need no doctor. but yesterday I pretty much sat with it propped up all day and then we'd ice it and Lacey was doing some occupational therapy things to it and it still just was swole up real bad. And ⁓ I'm supposed to go to North Dakota on Saturday. be duck hunting for a week on like freelance and public stuff where there's a lot of walking. Mm. I like, I probably should get this scene about. Mm-hmm. And so yeah, went to the ⁓ Hey, one thing, if you show up there and go to the D and R office mm and show ⁓ your boot, they may give you like rights to drive. Hey man. Y'all got any handicapped hunting areas? Yeah, I don't know how that would go down, but yeah, that's a fair point. It's worth a shot. Y'all know by now that we love our friends at Ag of Equipment, and I want to tell y'all about an incredible deal that they have going on right now. You can get zero percent financing for 84 months. 84 months, that's crazy, on John Deere 3E and 4M series compact tractors. From the 3025E to the four ⁓ four four ⁓ There's a John Deere compact tractor ready for your property, your farm, your hunting land. There's a whole lot of them scattered throughout around here or visit agUp dot com today. Yeah. ⁓ but ⁓ the doctor said this morning before she put me in this big old boot. I got the boot. I got x rays. didn't break anything. I had some sort of like small tears in the ligaments in your ankle. I think them hurt worse than breaking some. Dude, it it I I've like I said, I've fallen before in the woods. I mean it just happens. Especially I've stepped in stump holes before. When I did that, I was like, Mm I mean it hurt. Something happened. Yeah. felt real smart. Felt real, real smart. I was thankful that I wasn't doing anything like super dumb. No it happened. Just walking. Yeah, it just happens. Just trying to walk back to the truck, stepped on what looked like ground, there wasn't no ground there. Well bam. So I've been we'll get to my deer hunting story in a second, but relatable to you, not in there as bad. But I've been in the process of draining some water out of our new pond because I'm gonna redo a few little structural structure things out in it. But ⁓ other day I was I made a homemade siphon pipe. Okay. And you had to prime a siphon pipe. You gotta stop both ends of it up, fill it with water so you can get a f a flow going. Anyway, that clay dam, it done got wet from the water I poured in. ⁓ no. And I slipped and a stick shoved up in my big toe underneath underneath the nail. And the stick was like almost as big as my pinky. So my nail is just hanging on by a thread at the moment. Yeah. That hurts. No, if you've never had something forced up under your fingernail, that is a that is pain is what that is. That is some serious, serious pain. But ⁓ stuff happens when you're out there in the woods. ⁓ it's dangerous folks, it's dangerous activities. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. ⁓ it definitely does. I that's the I mean the the point the moral I like the only crescendo to my story is I did tell one thing I said is I was like, Man, imagine if I would have shot that doe and killed her. And then I'd a had a deer. ⁓ gosh. And have that happen, I would have had a gong show. Yeah. And then I Lacey goes, Well you could have called Jordan. I said, I could have. He would have never let me hear the end of that. I'd have been there. I know you would have been there. He wasn't there with my side by side. I know you would have been there. I just w I I would never hear the end of it. There's certain there's certain group text messages that you don't want to end up in the wrong side on and I and I would have. That's why you have not said anything about this, I'm ⁓ assuming. No, I really th why I didn't say I didn't think much about it. ⁓ until like the night that it happened, I was just like ⁓ tweaked my ankle. You know, I thought by Sunday morning I'd be like good to go. No swole up, so ⁓ no. You you hitting that middle age. Hitting the middle aged. Yeah. Don't happen like it used to. Does not happen. Anyway. All right, you have a deer hunting story. I've got a couple of deer hunting stories. ⁓ so I think I mentioned on here a few weeks ago I had gotten sick and tired of the cameras I was running and I ordered a whole bunch more of ⁓ Moultries now. I'm a Moultrie man now. They're good. I've been very impressed. So I got all those in ⁓ last week and last Monday I think I went and started putting cameras out, seeing what was around. And By Tuesday morning I was like, My goodness, where have all these bucks came from? Like it was like a shooter bucket every camera. But one in particular is like a hundred and what would you think of that deer score? The ten point. I have tendency to exaggerate so conservatively I think he's a hundred and sixty inch deer. I thought he one sixty, one sixty five. Yeah. I'm saying conservatively one six zero. Conserv I don't I don't believe he's in the fifties. I believe he's in those one six something. A hammer. Yeah, he's big deer. Giant. He's a very big deer, yeah. ⁓ anyway, and the Joker's showing up in daylight like every single day between Monday and opening a season. Which is crazy. Yeah. You don't I mean I'm not saying you don't sit I shouldn't say it's crazy. Not just him. It's like four or five shooter bucks, like five plus year old deer. That's what's crazy is you'll you hear people getting patterns on these big deer, but it's just not like run of the mill. You know what I mean? Like you don't always have a deer like that that early in the season. You might have ⁓ on the same trail camera, you might have ⁓ somewhat consistent. Sometimes they're like they're nocturnal, they're this, like that deer was being there every day. I was like, that's wild. And his slew of other friends. Yeah. There were also nice deer. Yeah. I didn't get I don't un I didn't understand. Like by by Tuesday night after the cameras are running for like two afternoons. Mm I'm like, I have got a chance to kill this deer Thursday. And I'm I mean, I'm getting pumped. Mm-hmm. Like and also I'm like, what am I gonna do? 'Cause the other Two of the other bucks coming in there are hundred and thirty plus inch deer. I'm like, I've never been in this position before where I I if if I wanna kill the one 'cause the w the one sixty's coming in after the other bucks like five to ten minutes later. Like that's after day three of watching this happen. Like, that's the deal. He's not running with this group, but he's right behind ⁓ seems like. I'm like, I've never I don't think I've ever intentionally passed a poping young deer with my bow that's old. You did something I couldn't do. And ⁓ when I say couldn't do I mean I really could not do it. Unless I was on a property and the landowner said, Don't shoot that deer, that's the only way I could Yeah, but I mean this place is just like I've I mean there's no rules really. Yeah. But anyway, ⁓ course get the wind and The wind's supposed to be east, southeast that afternoon. South east predomin predominantly, however you say that word. Predominantly. Predominantly. Yeah. And ⁓ like the spot you actually hunted this spot sir a few years ago. Shot doe then shot a doe. I know exactly where you were. There was a certain video that you sent and when I saw it I was like, I know where he is. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But anyway, I get up in there like early that afternoon. Like way earlier 'cause I'm for one, I'm amped up. Two, I'm like, I don't wanna screw anything up 'cause typically you get one chance mm at this type deal. In my my past it's been like a one and done deal. Like after they realize you're hunting ⁓ they're going nighttime. Mm-hmm. And ⁓ anyway, like I don't see anything for the first hour or so and about four thirty, ⁓ I see a doe coming. Another doe behind her, another doe behind her, just a family group of does. And then they're up there feeding around, millin around, doing all the deal and ⁓ I see some more legs coming back there behind them and I try to pull them with binoculars but I got deer within thirty yards of me so I'm trying to be cautious too and not blow everything out. Mm-hmm. If I give binoculars up, see it's a buck and I can't really tell what it is until he takes a step. His head comes from behind a tree and it's like a twenty inch wide eight point, one of the big shooters. This is at like five forty five in the afternoon. hour and a half left of dark till dark. I'm like, Okay, I gotta make a decision here. Am I gonna 'cause I mean this is a big deer. He's five and a five and a half, six and a half year old deer, I mean just a swab, big old bodied deer, two hundred and thirty pound deer probably. I would have shot him. Any other circumstances I would had too. And I probably should have now looking back at it. anyway. We would have had a very different episode today. Yeah. Check out this skull plate of this buck I killed. Yeah. So he comes up there, he's, you know, mealing around and staying there like for forty five minutes, him and three other bucks. Mm-hmm Other two th or other two or three of ⁓ weren't I mean they're small dude. ⁓ and it starts getting dark, I'm like, Where's the big where's big boy at? And I'm starting to look at and th at this point the twenty inch wide eight point has walked off. He had moved on about his business heading out to these big fields for the evening. And ⁓ I'm like, Golly, I d I regret my decision. Mm. You know, immediately regret when he starts walking off. I'm like Yeah. They always look bigger when they're walking away too. He looked big coming at you as we were getting I I was getting videos from cell phone videos that Jordan's sending us from the trees hunting into this deer in bow range. And I'm like, what are you doing? Anyway. Anyway, ⁓ getting dark about six fifty ish so or so. I mean it's like pitch black dark like ten after seven. and I I look down this road, I'm looking kinda hunting on the edge of and I see a deer coming, but at this point it's got dark enough where I can't tell anything other than it's a deer coming. You know, you can see a a kind of a dark spot. Pull up binoculars, all I see is tines. I'm like, that's what there is. And immediately, I mean I used to do this extremely bad when I was younger. And I've kind of gotten over it since I've had more experience, but it hit me like a ton of bricks. Buck fever. I mean, I go to shaking. As soon as I see it, my legs start shaking. You you've seen me do this after I shoot something. I've seen it happen to pe I've seen it happen to people and I know I know exactly what you're talking about. I don't know what there needs to be a name for it because there it's y you're everyone knows what buck fever is, but also people know people know the gratification when it feels like you've kind of conquered it. Yeah. And my version of conquered it is probably similar to yours. That is you keep your cool until the arrow is released or the trigger is pulled and then the d the adrenaline just comes out. That is my version of conquering buck fever. And I've seen people bit do that and then all of a sudden it just sneaks back in and gets ⁓ And you don't know when it's gonna happen, but exactly like you said, it starts the moment starts coming and you're just like And I think too, I had been s I've been amped up. I mean, literally had big mature buck within bow range for forty five minutes. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Like I was already keyed up. And then when he see ⁓ like, here it is I go to shaking and then he stops in the road like at thirty five yards and he's facing like facing angling at me 'cause he the way I'm set up, they're coming down this road, going out to a big field at night and they're stopping there and eating. Mm. And ⁓ anyway, it's getting to the point where I'm like If he doesn't hurry up and get here, it's gonna get dark and I ain't gonna be able to shoot. How much time do you got? ⁓ like five minutes. ⁓ Like it's it's Yeah. I mean, it's almost on the verge of being too dark. But I'm like I I've talked about this before on my bow setup. I shoot a bigger peep, I got a bigger housing on the site, just so I can see it dark better. Yeah. And ⁓ he gets t he comes forward, he's looking out towards that field. I guess he's just standing there kind of observing this stuff old bucks do. Yeah. Yeah, I've seen you've seen it too. It's like the young ones will sometimes just Here they come. And you're immediately freaking out. It's like w is he fitting the bus? What's yeah, you know. The old ones it's like old gobbler. They'll do the same thing, they'll just be like Just k he probably doesn't have a worry in the world. He's just looking. This is what they do. But me, my mind's like He's freaked out. He knows something. He he's finna get out of here. He's finna get out of here. But anyway, he takes a few more steps forward and gets to about twenty five ish yards, maybe twenty. ⁓ he's angling at me. Mhm. But I also have fixed blades on my arrow, so I'm like I'm gonna jab him facing me if I have to. I ain't worried about that. That's the one good thing I learned last year switching in fixed blades, like the angle side of things, I ain't worried about it no more. Just put it where it needs to go. Just throw it in there. Yeah. Okay. And I draw back and my peep is twisted. ⁓ no. Yeah. Had you drawn back since you've been up there? Okay. I had. I had test drawn and kind of saw where all my shooting s holes were. So we have no idea how this occurred. I have no idea unless it like rubbed on my shirt while I was sitting there 'cause I had my bow, you know, holding it while he was walking down the road and unless I twisted it on my bino harness or something. I don't know. That's some poor luck. But I reach up there with my nose and I'm trying to twist the thing with my nose. I finally get my tongue up there and get it twisted somewhat where I can see through it. And I put it on a deer. I'm doing all this when a deer standing there at twenty yards. Sitting there the buck of a lifetime on the opening day of Mississippi season and Jordan's up there at full dragon. Got my got my tongue out, trying to twist heapside. Okay. Sorry, continue. He's he's standing there like quarter and two me at twenty yards. And I look through the peep, I'm like, I can't see the deer. ⁓ I can see with my eyes, but I can't see him through the peep. Instinctive. And I finally get the thing twisted and I'm like, Okay, I can see his the line of his back 'cause it's somewhat pretty dark at this point. Mm-hmm. But also it all these thoughts are going through my head, like If I don't shoot him now, I'm probably never gonna get another opportunity. But those deer deer like that, you typically don't get another opportunity. I pull back and I'm looking looking but once I get my peep turn around where I can it's not fully straight, but I can see through it good enough to shoot. And ⁓ I found his back line and I see my twenty yard pin on top of his back and I pull it down and I shoot. And a deer hits the ground and takes off. I'm like, I think I got him. Mm or I think I hit him. Yeah. And anyway I texted y'all, I was like, I shot him. I don't know how good it is. I mean it didn't sound like a you know, a thump thump, but I also hadn't shot that many deer within fixed blade broadheads and they the ones I have shot last year zip through ⁓ fast I definitely don't I've heard it. They don't make as loud of a crack like a just a Yeah, you don't hear them. blades opening on the rage and stuff, they make a slapping noise when you hit something. Yeah. So I'm I'm still I like I everything's going through my head, you know, dummy blah blah blah. I don't know where you were you shaking he ended up there? ⁓ gosh. Yeah. Like it I just stood there for about five minutes trying to kick you know, figure out what ⁓ what happened and all that. As one does. But at this point I think I've hit the deer. And ⁓ I get Text y'all and wait five, ten minutes and I ease out of the stand and I walk down there to where my area is and I had alumino knock on so I can see my arrow from the stand and ⁓ pick up my arrow. I'm like ⁓ no. There's no blood on here at all. Then I get to looking at my arrow, like at the Fletchens, and there's a little bit of blood on there. I'm like, okay, did I hit him or not? 'Cause there's nothing on the arrow. Just on a little little bitty like faint speck on the on the Yeah, you sent a picture. And then I go to try to wipe it off and it won't wipe off the fletching. So I'm like, Is this blood from last year? I didn't know that part of the story. Yeah, and ⁓ I think that's what it ended up being. So I I think I'm a hundred percent sure I completely missed deer 'cause he's been back on camera. Insult to injury. Yeah, like he was I wouldn't like I was so confused 'cause I found you know, there's a little bit of blood on the fledgling of the air, then there's nothing on the air of the broadhead, there's nothing on the ground. I get back to the truck, you know, I'm like I don't know what to do. Mm-hmm. Like just completely distraught. And ⁓ didn't even register in my head, you know, that may be blood from the last deer I shot in the of Well no, you wouldn't be thinking about that at that time. You're thinking fresh blood or something. course I'm like either way if I did hit him or didn't hit him I don't need to be in there messing around no more tonight. Yeah. So I get in the truck, start driving to the house and the dang tear shows right back up on camera. Like forty five minutes later. By the time I get in the truck, get on the interstate, like there he is again. I'm like, okay, well I didn't kill him but I probably screwed this up for the rest of the year until the rut gets here. Yeah. So it's gonna be a tough one. Yeah. First day of the season, boys, missed a one hundred and sixty to a hundred and sixty five inch ten point. I fell in a hole in in central Mississippi. Yeah. Yeah. You missed a deer and I fell in a hole and tore my ligaments up. Yep. And so I went back the next day. ⁓ yeah, the story's not over. My bad. My bad. Went back the next day 'cause I was like, Man, if he showed up that fast at the camera again. Maybe he may come back in here tomorrow afternoon. Maybe he don't know. Maybe he don't know. I mean deer get spooked all the time. I was very, very quiet when I was looking around, like I didn't make any noise, I didn't take anything out of the tree, like everything was sitting there quiet and then he shows up that fast I'm like Maybe by some happenchance there's a chance he shows right back up tomorrow. Mm-hmm. I mean same crazier stuff. Yeah. Yeah. But so I go back the next day And I get in the tree and I mean deer start moving f quick. Early. I mean I hadn't been in a tree ten minutes and does start showing up. And ⁓ I started seeing deer, started seeing deer. And nothing super early far as buck decent buck goes, but about fifteen minutes for dark, here comes the twenty inch wide eight point. Mm. And there's a hundred and forty inch eight point behind him. And then there's a hundred and twenty something inch nine point behind them. I'm like, Okay. This is buckhive. What do I do? What do you do? What did you do? I didn't shoot ⁓ 'cause I was waiting on the tin to show back up. And the tin has not been back in the daylight since. Do you regret your decision? ⁓ by not shooting other deer. Either of ⁓ And and ⁓ honest answers only. Do you re do you regret your decision on the first evening to not shoot that one deer or you and do you regret your decision to not shoot any of those other shooters on the second day? ⁓ I regret my decision for missing the deer. That's what I regret. But you were talking about getting all the cobwebs out. I I should have all my cob all of them out. I should have all my cobwebs cleaned out. So y'all have got first hand ex ⁓ telling of I hadn't told many people about this 'cause I'm kinda embarrassed. I mean anyone would be, but everyone's done it. What I've learned is that is this is this is gonna be a like just a providential truth. Everyone misses an archery hunting. Yeah. I don't know if you knew that. ⁓ yeah. They do. It's just kind of part of it. It sucks. And the ones that ⁓ the the one the from what I can tell from my just anecdotal research mostly The folks that talk a big game like they never miss, ⁓ they do. They just don't tell anyone about it. They they just kick it off and left field. That didn't happen. That never happened. Yeah, that never happened. Yeah. So yeah. I ⁓ I also thought about this. Sorry to interrupt you. No, no, no, go ahead. So, you know, my dad passed away in February. Mm-hmm. I I you know, I think Jesus has a sense of humor, I really do. But I used to give my dad so much crap about missing deer. And like when I put those cameras out and this big bucks just start showing up left and right, I'm like, cool. And then that big joker come walking up in there and I get buck fever and missing them. I was like, Thank you, Daddy. Can you imagine if he was here? What Bo would say. ⁓ gosh. We would this would be one of those instances where we would call him and I'd be like, What do you think about Jordan missing that big deer at at twenty yard too? Well, well, we we'll have boy. You've talked talking all that mess. Talking all that mess, man. I could hear it. That's a good point. I didn't think about that. Like karma. You know what you should do? Cause you didn't have your Z seven, did you? No. You should switch right now. Switch right now. Shoot your Z seven. The switchback. This yeah, the switchback. Sw ⁓ switch to the switchback. Hunt with that the rest of the season. ⁓ I can't I don't know. Hmm. Ain't got that thing dialed in just right. ⁓ Good stories. Some better than others. Both of ours are kind of painful. Mine physically painful, yours mentally and emotionally. Yeah. ⁓ you y any more to add? You ready to hop to hop to a different topic? No, that kind of wraps it up. I'm I'm a dummy. Me too, man. We can just somebody send me an award. Yeah. At least you didn't step in a hole and, you know, tear up your ankle. True. ⁓ so two was it la ⁓ a couple of weeks ago. It was either last week or the week before. I can't remember exactly which, but I went to Memphis to the Ducks Unlimited. I'm going somewhere with this by the way. I went from Memphis to the Ducks Unlimited headquarters and we recorded ⁓ some Halloween edition special podcast episodes that's gonna come out on the Ducks Unlimited podcast. Okay. Okay. And there's this sticker on my right there. Expanded Perspectives. I met these two guys that ⁓ have this podcast called Expanded Perspectives. And look, like we were saying, I have now been ⁓ you and I have been podcasting since twenty seventeen, so nine years. That was probably one of the most fun times I've ever had doing a podcast. Really? Okay. So Kyle and Cam, who run this expanded perspectives TV show, great guys, hunters, ⁓ and their show Is unlike anything I've ever listened to, much less been a part of. But what they talk about, and I'd I'd encourage everybody to go listen. What they talk about is they'll talk about hunting and all this kind of stuff, but they talk about like they they their whole podcast is sharing listener submitted stories from the craziest things that have happened to them in the woods. Okay. For example, they'll have folks send them. Bigfoot encounters. They'll have folks that are claiming they've seen UFOs. They've had folks saying they've found these small little human type people called ⁓ dwendies or something that they've seen while out hunting. And it's like I told them I didn't really know what to expect until we got in there and started recording. They start sharing all these wild stories. And I said, Maybe it's because all the podcasts I've ever been part of, like we're talking about It's stuff that I love and enjoy, but we're talking about for the most part very explainable things. Mm-hmm. You know, we're talking about hunting and fishing and on the meat eater stuff. I'm talking about biology. Like they're talk they're they're telling some wild stories. And some of ⁓ like I said, some of ⁓ are like I saw UFO while I was deer hunting. And then some of ⁓ are verifiable. Like they have one story of a dude that was ⁓ bow hunting in Texas and says he's sitting there and all of a sudden he sees a tiger. It like walking real close to him and he like called his friends and like I'm not getting out of this tree so you can come get me. Like a bingle tiger. Like a bingo tiger. Turns out there was like a sanctuary not too far away and one guy loose. ⁓ god. So stories like it's dude, it's pure entertainment. It is pure like it the the stories they got are so dad gum entertaining. Huh. What's the name of this? The the podcast is called Expanded Perspectives. Expanded Expanded Perspectives. And some of the dude, some of the stories that they get sent in They're not their own stories. They're all like f folks send them in to ⁓ And they're so some of ⁓ are so off the wall. They're folks writing ⁓ in saying they think they've been abducted by aliens. You know, I mean they're all ⁓ they're across the board. But I'm going somewhere with this. Where I'm going with is is I'm like, man, we've got a lot of folks that listen to this show, and that's a ⁓ that's a question we've never asked. And so I I'm teeing this up. We've got today is ⁓ Tuesday ⁓ October the fifth. We've got three more Mondays until Halloween week. What I'm asking for is folks to send in some of the ⁓ it ain't gotta be I mean, if you think you saw a UFO, send it in. But it ain't gotta be stuff like that. If you've got something crazy off the wall like a I don't know if we've got anybody that's seen a tiger, but you you kind of get the genre I'm going with. I want folks to email us in the craziest things that they've encountered in the woods while out hunting, fishing, camping, whatever. And to get it even better, whoever went who we're gonna pick the best story. We're gonna g we're gonna r share a bunch of ⁓ but whoever gets the best story, we're gonna send a pair of muck boots. This is ⁓ this is part of the new muck boot outmax collection. I see that. They like them ankle boots that you've been wearing that I got you? Yeah. Yeah. Now Nice pair of boots here. Pretty light too. Way lighter than mucks I remember being. Yeah. And now if someone, you know, whoever wins we'll make sure they get the right size and everything, but that's what we're gonna do. If you have a off the wall encounter of a story in the woods, if it's if you think you saw Bigfoot and you are embarrassed by that and you don't want everyone to think you're crazy, we'll keep it anonymous. But if you think you saw Bigfoot, tell us about it. Yeah. But and but I say all that to say I was inspired to do that little deal just because of ⁓ the time with Kyle and Cam. ⁓ expanded perspective. That is a I'm telling you, it's a if you listen to mostly hunting content shows, which is a lot of what I listen to, it's so like I didn't I'm I was surprised at how much I will have been entertained by that show. Okay. I'll have to start listening to it too. Yeah, it's off the wall. But anyway, yeah. So you're going to North Dakota next week duck hunting. Yep. Yep, yep, yep. Rider hunt or what are you doing there? No, we're filming a show. Okay. Me and ⁓ a friend of mine named Alex Robinson, he works for Outdoor Life. Him and I are we're slumming it, man. We're freelancing well the that's the term freelancing. All that means is is you're hunting public, is all that means. Okay. But ⁓ yeah, we're going to try to find ducks on ⁓ yeah, the welfare woods and hopefully we have us a good heck of a time. I've heard good reports from up that way. Mm. I've hunted North Dakota for ducks for the first time last year, had a great time. But I did it in November. This is even earlier than that. Yeah, this is I mean, I guess season when's it open? I think it opens like n like like first October or something. Yeah, I wanna say this is the first week. Okay. Yeah. I'm pretty fired up about it. I had all these hopes and dreams of getting a deer shot and I'm not like you. I'm not Trying to shoot a one sixty like a doe would be fine. I'm not either anymore. I screwed that up. But now I don't I don't like my chances as much given my current ankle situation, but ⁓ Hey, I've got a crossbow at the house. Nah. I can't do it. Come on, man. I can't do it. You got excuse. Yeah. ⁓ but yeah. I I ⁓ The the doctor told me if I am not an idiot, she didn't use those words, but that's what I interpreted as. If I'm not an idiot and take it easy, ⁓ my ankle will be in good enough shape for North Dakota next week. So I'm I'm taking it easy. We got a lot of season ahead of us, so you better get it taken care of. I know, I can't be dumb. We got Midwest rut hunts coming up. Mhm. I got Iowa, you got Kansas. You and I have got to go to our lease in Oklahoma at some point. We do. I'm pretty fired up about that. And that wouldn't ⁓ may need to be sooner than later. Yeah. I mean. We need to least go get eyeballs on this place. You get ey there's quail up there too. ⁓ yeah. Duck and deer season here in Mississippi. Mm-hmm. Duck season coming in about a month and a half. ⁓ so a lot of hunting. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ that's all I got for this week. Yeah. Y'all pray for me. Pray that I won't miss any more deer this year. Pray that my peepa stay tearing straight. I won't have to get my tongue up there and straighten it out. And everybody be safe. Yeah. Yeah. ⁓ we appreciate y'all. Pray for me and my ankle and then I'll be more observant in the woods, I guess. I'm telling you, man, that hole, the way it was covered by l you couldn't tell. If someone was trying to booby trap me, they couldn't have done a better job. ⁓ but yeah. The the email address is the STL pod. The word the STL pod at gmail dot com. Email us about anything you want to email us about. Is it the or the? The the depends on where you went to school. The has two E's to me. ⁓ The The STL Pod. The in the Bible has two E's. I don't know. The But yeah, win you a pair of ⁓ muck out max boots ⁓ if your story gets picked. But yeah, send us your off the wall stories from the woods. We want to hear about ⁓ See y'all next week. Thank y'all for listening.
